Our gep batch was apparently practically the last one to have the same final-year exam papers across the gep schools. Remember the teachers mentioned something abt dunman setting their own paper one year? That's because the teachers there had trouble using the same standards as the other schools to test their kids... they couldn't complete the syllabus or something on time. At the focus grp discussion, the gep teachers (from rgps, ri, ...) said that now, with so many schools having the gep programme, they never co-ordinate mass things, e.g get-togethers like those maths trails, MEGA, chinese camp, etc. There's now also a policy that each gep school sets its own papers unless the teachers decide to combine with other schools. Results in different standards but it's very difficult to co-ordinate the examinations for 400+ students per batch (anyway the gep teaching in each school is starting to develop distinct sub-cultures).
(One example was a final year exam, same paper given to RI/RGS/ACS/Dunman. There was a predictable normal distribution of distinctions/passes/failures in the 1st three schools, but most of the dunman kids taking it flunked or did pretty badly. Since it was pointless letting kids sit for an exam which most of them would fail, the teachers decided to set their own paper aimed at the student's ability level)
I suspect dunman also sets some of its own papers.
I found more screwed up scented pens today! Green (Apple) and Light BLue (Off-apple? Couldn't identify the scent)
Elf Gone Wrong tied her hair in 2 pigtail braids today. Eee!
And Michelle was startled when, when showing me the Art projects and interpreting them for me, I told her what "Number 3, Number 5" et al have in common.

Anyone want to design the page while I slave away at the scanner?

do you wank over the books or something? there's got to be an ulterior motive for the shit you're doing.
And if anyone knows where to get Rubber Chickens, do tell me so I can buy Andrew (Gan) one for his birthday to hang outside his house.
I was at Ikea today and I saw 100 Tea Lights for $5.90. If I buy them, I can give 1 each to 100 people with the blessing of "this is to light up your life"

I thought only celebrities have strangers recognise them from photos
RGS girls in general aren't "little" in any sense of the word. I wouldn't presume anything about the latter.
Hi everyone, I'm assuming all of you reading this know who I am. My birthday's coming up on 19 October, and due festive gifts such as
a) Skate scooter
b) Crate of "Jolly Shandy"
c) A stable email address that doesn't start charging users/ go down all the time
d) Handphone (monthly subscription being part of the gift, of course)
e) All back episodes of "Babylon 5", "Frasier", "Will and Grace" on VCD/DVD
f) a good idea what to get for my class come grad nite. Better yet, 23 things to give my classmates.
g) The latest Dune prequel novel- "Dune: House Corrino"
h) The chance to eat some sinful food without the calories.
i) Meal at "Original sin", holland V.
j) Lesson on tying friendship bands
will be appreciated, and acknowledged some time in the future.
(=
btw, I came across the word "preppy", and asked my brother what it meant. He tried to explain it in terms of American high school-culture, and I suggested the AC family being the equivalent in Singapore. He started laughing , and was very amused how i put it in "andrew-speak".
are those guys?
The response:
yeah, Raffles Guys :)
And he asked for the whole 2 pages of 402'99, and wants the GEP classes too. Ooo. What evil deeds has he in mind?
I once asked someone why RGS yearbooks were so popular
he said
"either they're looking for people they know, or they're looking for little lolitas to f*ck"
Andrew Tan disagrees:
but RGS girls are too smart to get tricked into that sort of thing, and not particularly good looking. (or so ppl say. I beg to differ lah.)
And HJ/M is scathing:
is that all these guys ever think about? f**k? desperate, horny bunch of codgers...
bah....
And someone who would kill me if I put her name here said:
hmmph toodledoos, little lolita has to call a friend for the answer key
I wonder how much I can scan in sub-half-an-hour a day. Maybe I should outsource. I just did 6 in, 20? 25? minutes.

oh and i was just peering through my brother's ri yearbooks today for inspiration on how-to-draw-house-pages, spotted some really incriminating pictures. ;)

PSC probably didn't "just assign" him Supreme court law- he must have impressed the pants off the Cambridge interviewers And the PSC interviewers to be on such a hot career track.
For all yr reading/blackmailing pleasure,
Taken off an oooold RJC debates page:
1. At the Individuals Speaking Round (part of the World Debating Championships) in Israel:
Debating the motion, "This House welcomes the next millenium", Michelle, on being asked in a POI what she would do in a next millenium with no men:
"What do you think fingers and vegetables are for?" (in front of an international community no less)
2. On watching the JC 1 tryouts, over the motion "This House fears China", and being told that Tibetan nuns were forced to erm, mate, Senthil noted:
"Copulation equals population.", to explain the large population in China
3. On debating a serious motion, over "This House believes that the legal system has betrayed us", Ashraf gives us a serious and current example:
"The jury system today is corrupt and easily manipulated: the MAFIA wins them over easily - look at Al Capone for example." (Too many Godfather movies, too little reading!)
4. Lim Jianyi, trying to prove to us that "The ideals of Sports" are not dead:
"Even in the villages, African women run around bouncing pumpkins."
5. Ashraf, trying to justify in the same debate the huge sums of money that
athletes get:
"Athletes need a lot of money to buy their expensive sports shoes. This is very important because without the proper sport shoes, they will get foot fungi and blisters..." (proceeds into an intimate examination of foot fungi and blisters)
Webkeeper's Note: Some quotes have been withheld from publication due to obscene content
RGS yearbooks are the most popular ones in RI (definitely) and ACS (apparently). All the hotbloods borrow RGS yearbooks and trade them like hot commodities, and the books are lost. Or, the students forget who they lent them too.
I got 1995 and 1996 from Huijun today, but I'm too tired from my frolick with my class (Pork knuckle at Marche! then "America's Sweethearts" at Cineleisure) that I don't think I'll get any scanning done today.
diabolical teachers. "it's really demoralising to see fluffy sheep drawn all over your examination essay script, but at least i'm not so mean as to write FLUFF on it." - blin, snickering.
They played "You're the Inspiration" during Farewell Assembly. I thought that that song was appropriate only in VJC, where half the school's attached to the other half.
Agagooga's daughter was sitting 2 rows in front of me - her pimples have cleared!
There was an unhealthy fascination with the World Trade Center attack - it was mentioned both by the Principal and the Guest Of Honour.
The story Mr Kwek Mean Luck (erm, what a name!) told us about an old woman asking him, when he was 18, what he wanted to do - be a Lawyer, Doctor or Banker, sounds horribly engineered. His claim that he "didn't know" also sounds suspect as PSC probably would have asked him that question when they gave him his interview. Julian suggested that PSC assigned him to their choice of department if this was really the case.
Why did everyone laugh at the pronunciation of "Chua Huiyi Jay"?
I didn't know Puppy was in Air Rifle!
I didn't know #3 was in Hockey. Up till last week, I didn't know #5 was in Softball - I thought all Councillors have to quit their ECAs.
The ORA plug was quite shameless and no attempt was made to conceal it. It's quite sad that they only have about 3000 members. RGS and RI have 400 over students graduating each year, and RJC has ~340 non-RI/RGS pupils graduating each year. Although it's not quite as I suggested in Sec 1 that there were as many members in the ORA as the years that RI was old (for which I was scolded by Ms Santha).
It seems everyone was taking pictures, and I was nearly blinded by the flashes.
Katie told Puppy that I think she looks like a Puppy!
Staff Room 2 smelled of Pork Floss (apparently it was Coffee. I wonder what goes in their Coffee)
David Lin took a picture in front of the vending machine with the guy who looks like him (and in the same pose too - throwing a frisbee)

Tan lines? Why would there be tan lines, except for lines running down their back? :) And those who don't have tan lines running down their back probably don't have to worry about any sort of tan lines.
RGS merchandise is adolescent-neuroses? I thought just bad style. Nanyang's beat Hualalalala :0 Maybe they'll break RI and Raffles Guys' near-monopoly of the top two.
Anyway, there's a chem teacher who comes to school once a fortnight in a practically-see-through blouse (not that it accentuates her appearance very much). Avert my eyes every time it occurs. At first thought she wore a petticoat underneath, but apparently it's very thin/translucent too.
Wonder how many scgs girls wear jackets in school... wonder if there Are any.
Sleeveless scgs blouses also means those who have tans better make sure they don't have visible tan lines... which would mean much more of them should be rolling up their t-shirt sleeves. Nanyang-ers generally aren't that tanned... except for the basketballers of legend, and they're a different breed.
Ms. Selfridge: American high school-sassiness meets british chic.
RGS merchandise~ loyalist endorsements meets adolescent-neuroses. Been wearing badly-designed t-shirts in RI (think: uuugly student-designed House t-shirts; eca t-shirts with slogans like "just sing it"; mandatory wearing) too long already. 20th anniversary one was pretty bad.
Nanyang girls' high has been going up up up the last few years. Some of their prelims are tougher than supposedly top schools, they even pushed out chinese high. Their seniors are very proud of them. A relative of mine said a contingent of educationists from chinese high/nanyang GH went over to malaysia and impressed the pants off the chinese schools there.
Been falling for Shostakovich's music. Marvellous. His stuff is the key to the 20th century.
By the way, my offer for monkey island still stands.
Tidbit: Mr. Nah goes to St. Andrew's Cathedral.
And dr. chan was sniggering thru chem s session today because he set the question that, like, almost nobody passed. So many got 0 /20 for his question that he started drawing funny shapes with the zeros- I got a bean-like thing.
The RGS line of merchandise has grown to encompass a ridiculous range of items. Is it trying to establish itself as the brand for the New Age RGS girl?
What do they sell?
Speculation/listing:
Jackets, shirts, towels, mugs, pads, tissue paper, pens, screwed up pens, socks, sling/duffel bags, diskettes.
the rafflesian jacket ins't just ugly, crys; it warrants an 'obscenely butthideous' tag. oh and interesting fact: my rgs socks (given during orientation!) have shrunk in the wash, emerging as rgs Hot Socks. which means, paradoxically, that i can't even wear them to school;)
Ed: [Posted in Reblogger by Crystal: wear lah, watch them try to book you *gleefully.]

And Huijun wore her Raffles Guys jacket today after some remarks by me yesterday on how they two never wore the trademark jackets anymore, sparked off by seeing some J1 in the aforementioned jacket.
[Posted in Reblogger by Crystal: those jackets are ugly! :(]

1. hahah
hmm i'm not really sure
scgs? nygh? mgs when it's raining?
hmm i'd agree but i haven't really seen any good looking scgs girls
and their head prefect from our year agrees with me
maybe the uniform is some devious plan to get guys gawking at their bare flesh :P
2. cool wad
sleeveless
sexy cool rite
3. Their school uniform isn't that indecent, though.. given what some people wear on weekends . (Ed: If it's not, then why do you always see them in jackets or PE T-Shirts?
There are 2 main reasons for this. One is modesty. Another is that being indecent because you are compelled to is unethical for those who like to be indecent, and so they have to wear more on the top)
4. well....bad design...
5. woah... i learnt something new today. :)
haha, what do i think about it? i mean, considering i had to wear it for what, 10 years...?
let's just say that i couldn't wait to change into my jc uniform even though it's really quite ugly.
well, it was just a few aspects i guess, u know the fact that it's really sheltered and some people could really be uppity, attribute it to my inferiority complex if u will, but for what it's worth, i did have some fun while i was there and i made a coupla really gd friends too.
yes, that's one thing, everyone comes out alike. esp the ones in RJ. sigh, u better not let this get out because someone'll prolly send a hired killer to kill me or something for saying something like that. lol.
it's only exposed cuz there are quite a number of u know... snotty and bitchy people there.
6. i think the school is catty but the individuals from there tend to be really nice but a bit gu1 niang. [sc i mean]
i don't know many. seem to be two factions, the nice ones and the pretetious-arty-farty wannabes
7. what, river valley? haha
sc girls generally speak well but they're all very ditsy why
sc girls yah lah speak well but they're all sluts really
oh okay... so they can take it off when they want
so they have a choice of indecency
brilliant
slutty aren't they
some are a lot worse than others
8. hmm.... i don't really know... i think the scgs uniform is pretty okay...
9. oh. haiyah whack them all or something
dunno. kan bu shuang
10. oh...well...
i think it's quite practical wat....very cooling =)
er...besides that...me thinks it's indecent too...
at least it's not white...=)
11. i like it. used to like it. before... never mind.
SCGS girls have the feminine thing going on for them. The "sit-properly" etiquette allure that the savages from RGS can only dream to emulate. They rate the highest in the bitch factor though - if there's a rumour going around about how some girl/guy/goat broke your heart/condom/wallet, it probably originated from Sincerity Courage Generiosity Service.
as for looks, are you fuggin kidding? there are *way* many sc lookers. that's why they all "act cute", it's innate in their culture because a large proportion of them look so good. ever saw a plump sc girl? nada. ever saw a slim nanyang girl? nay.
there. fodder for quoting. mmm. ;)
i was fond of scgs. generally i'm still fond of it.
12. during my time, they were the swankiest girls around
13. i think flabby arms shouldn't be seen. and girls should shave.
14. oh i think the uniform's nice
i told u it makes them skinny right?
coz fat girls look mutherfuckingly ugly in the sc uniform so they're more or less forced to make themselves thin!
15. heh... some girls from there quite pretty... heh.
harr... i think most girls from there are highly extroverted... seems like..
16. sc girls are the biggest source of jc culture shock for any rgs girl because they're so completely different from each other
Why on earth do they need to know whether I was converted or born into my religion, and what year I was converted if it was the former?
The degree of myopia question is suspect too. I wonder what difference someone's eyesight makes to PSC. And the height and weight. Sheesh, maybe they're trying to weed out anorexic girls for fear of them dying while they are on a crash diet?
My parents are practically forcing me to apply. "Look at Kheng Hwa... he has a personal assistant".
Oh no, I'm becoming angsty.

My sister claims its racist, but then she's the one who claimed my Sec One Chinese Teacher was racist because he thought that Non-Halal food tastes better than Halal food as the blood is drained off.
The weirdest thing was the part where one (Bangkok) prostitute was jiggling her breasts for more than a minute while the American tourists threw paper balls at them. Huh?

"Geocities is doing it to practically everybody, as far as I've heard. Even the really small, mostly text fanfiction site belonging to a friend got hit. Maybe you should move."
And move I shall. I think. The prices are ridiculous for just a bit more bandwith - $8.95/month for 10GB/month? If 3GB/month goes so quickly, 10GB/month won't last much more.
They're gonna drive us away like this.

Consumption of pork is prohibited by Islam, and considered a sin.
Tinawat Marukpitak, a lawmaker from the ruling Thai Rak Thai party, was grilled for three hours by his party colleagues who blasted him for making insensitive remarks and humiliating the nation, party spokesman Suranand Vejjajiva told reporters.
"I didn't think what I did would turn out to be a big problem. My comments were personal, not of Thai Rak Thai," Tinawat told reporters after announcing his resignation from Parliament.
Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra welcomed Tinawat's decision. Tinawat will remain party member.
Tinawat triggered a massive uproar Monday by writing an open letter to U.S. President George W. Bush, in which he said Thailand was horrified by the terrorist attacks on the U.S. last Tuesday.
He wrote that the best way to strike back at Islamic countries who harbor the terrorists would be "to bomb them with pork fat bombs that are launched on cruise missiles."
On Tuesday, Tinawat said he didn't intend to humiliate Muslims. "I just want to reduce the boiling temperature of the world situation," he said.
While there, I also saw this lady with a veil. However, the upper part of her chest was visible. Makes you wonder what's the point.
"Those are AC girls, mind you" - Melvin on Tuesday explaining the results of his survey - only 1-2 of 10-12 of his female friends do not engage in the works.
I realised today that Intellectual Property fits the definition of "Public Good". Tis non-excludable (with the efforts of crack rings and the proliferation of mp3s) and non-rivalrous.
There's a German Supermarket along Bukit Timah near Coronation Plaza (imaginatively named 'German Marketplace') where my sister gets Quark and other stuff. I was browsing and they sell the weirdest stuff. German Nutella (I wonder if it's different from that made in Australia), German detergent, German Nivea shampoo (which looks like the sort sold here), German window spray, German tampons (OB and Spar) and German kinder eggs (which also look like those sold here). They had this interesting looking sparkling water maker - add water and out comes your soda water. Didn't have time to see it in operation, though.
And apparently Nanyang Primary is relaxing its hair standards. I saw many of them today with unbelievably long hair (not tie-able length, though). My sister alleges that in NYPS, those with curly hair must straighten.

What was Ms. Gong wearing??
It's true that pork is in theory more susceptible to toxins/bacteria/other icky stuff. The pig's snout (and the wet nose of the dog) is widely acknowledged as one of the sites for ram-pant bacterial infestation- e.g. many influenza bacteria thrive in that region, and exchange plasmids~ that's one of the sources for people getting "bird flu"- the exchange of genetic material between bacteria facilitated there.
Cooking doesn't necessarily "kill off all the germs"- the slightest contamination, e.g. using the same spoon for raw/cooked meat, can affect it. And high temperature will not necessarily denature all bacteria- bacterial toxins may linger on in food even if the bacteria have been killed.

One day, she came to school and her boyfriend did not arrive for a long time. She looked quite distraught. In a fit of inspiration, Kairen suggested that both of us go stare at her from across the table, and freak her out such that she'd flee the canteen. When her boyfriend came, we would do the same to him, and both of them would be quite perturbed on discussing their mornings later.
Today, she was again alone for a while, and he suggested we put the dewious (sic) plan into action - after all, we have but a few weeks left. Too bad the guy came.
A few hours later, after Mat(h)s Paper 2, I was coming down the circular staircase near the canteen and saw Andrew Gan gesturing rather frentically. I didn't know what he was trying to say, but when I reached him, he told me about a curiosity that he had just sighted - a girl (presumably a J1) walking up the staircase had had a blouse... with a pocket! He was quite sure that it was a blouse, not a shirt (but then, I don't trust his skills in these matters). If it was a blouse, it seems that another Cult has arisen in RJC and is jockeying with Girls In Shirts for the hearts and souls of vulnerable innocents. Alternatively, it could be another of their chapters (Girls in Shirts with Pockets?), or a splinter group.

Pork: The Other White Meat?
In folkloric terms, eating the meat of the pig is said to contribute to lack of morality and shame, plus greed for wealth, laziness, indulgence, dirtiness and gluttony (Ed: ??? Some weird folk tales they read). We insult a person by calling him or her a "Pig" when they demonstrate these characteristics (Ed: and we call people "chicken" when they are cowardly, "fox" when they are sly and cunning, "worm" when they are cravenly, "bitches" when they are bitchy and "Horse" when they look like a Horse and so on). Muslims are forbidden by God to eat the meat of the pig (pork). This is detailed in verses 2:173, 5:3, 6:145, and 16:115 of the Qur'an. An exemplary verse is quoted here:
"He has only forbidden you dead meat (Ed: So no more frozen beef for them to eat, and isn't eating animals killed for non-immediate consumption eating dead meat?), and blood (Ed: but killing animals the Halal way necessitates leaving prodigious quantities of blood in the animal! Aren't Muslims in a quandary, then?), and the flesh of swine, and any (food) over which the name of other than Allah has been invoked (Ed: They pray over our food? That's why it's important to say Grace...). But if one is forced by necessity, without wilful disobedience, nor transgressing due limits, then Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful."
Is Pork Forbidden to Muslims Only?
The Jews and Christians are also forbidden from eating pork. Here is a quote from the Old Testament to that effect: "And the swine, because it divideth the hoof, yet cheweth not the cud (Ed: Isn't chewing the cud disgusting and shouldn't that make Cows Haram?), it is unclean unto you: ye shall not eat of their flesh, nor touch their dead carcase." Deuteronomy 14:8 Many Christians believe that this verse was directed only at the Jews (Ed: Most. And how many Christians do not eat pork?).
But Jesus himself says during the Sermon on the Mount; "Think not that I am come to destroy the Law, or the Prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill." Some Christians say that, after a vision by St. Peter, God cleansed all animals and made them fit and lawful for human consumption. If ALL animals are cleansed by Peter's vision, this includes dogs, cats, vultures, and rats: but you just don't see people getting excited about a cat-meat sandwich like they do over barbecued pork or bacon (Ed: Just because you don't like something doesn't mean that it is forbidden to eat). Others say that it was Paul who rescinded the law forbidding pork to humans, in order to appease the Romans, who enjoyed the taste of pig-meat. Many excuses have been given, but none are very sound.
Many Far Eastern traditions also discourage the eating of pork. The 3,000 year old Confucian Book of Rites says, "A gentleman does not eat the flesh of pigs and dogs." (Ed: Much Chinese cooking is done with lard, and the Chinese love their pork) Although many Chinese are avid eaters of pork today, physicians of ancient China recognized pork-eating as the root of many human ailments (Ed: ???. And they recognised mercury consumption as the way to a long life!). Buddhists, Jains and Hindus usually avoid eating any kind of meat (Ed: So why not make everything Haram?).
Bad effects of pork consumption
Pig's bodies contain many toxins, worms and latent diseases (Ed: That's what cooking is for. And other animals have diseases like BSE, Salmonella et al). Although some of these infestations are harbored in other animals, modern veterinarians say that pigs are far more predisposed to these illnesses than other animals (Ed: Where do these people get their scientific information?). This could be because pigs like to scavenge and will eat any kind of food, including dead insects, worms (Ed: Chickens eat worms), rotting carcasses, excreta (including their own), garbage, and other pigs (Ed: Rabbits are like this too, eating their own excrement and other unsavoury 'foods').
Influenza (flu) is one of the most famous illnesses which pigs share with humans. This illness is harbored in the lungs of pigs during the summer months and tends to affect pigs and humans in the cooler months. Sausage contains bits of pigs' lungs, so those who eat pork sausage tend to suffer more during epidemics of influenza (Ed: That's what cooking is for. And sausages contain many things. Beef sausages contain spinal cord, brain tissue etc. And let's not even talk about Hamburgers). Pig meat contains excessive quantities of histamine and imidazole compounds, which can lead to itching and inflammation; growth hormone, which promotes inflammation and growth; sulphur-containing mesenchymal mucus, which leads to swelling and deposits of mucus in tendons and cartilage, resulting in arthritis, rheumatism, etc (Ed: ???). Sulphur helps cause firm human tendons and ligaments to be replaced by the pig's soft mesenchymal tissues, and degeneration of human cartilage. Eating pork can also lead to gallstones and obesity, probably due to its high cholesterol and saturated fat content (Ed: Consuming palm oil leads to Coronary Heart Disease). The pig is the main carrier of the taenia solium worm, which is found it its flesh. These tapeworms are found in human intestines with greater frequency in nations where pigs are eaten. This type of tapeworm can pass through the intestines and affect many other organs, and is incurable once it reaches beyond a certain stage. One in six people in the US and Canada has trichinosis from eating trichina worms which are found in pork. Many people have no symptoms to warn them of this, and when they do, they resemble symptoms of many other illnesses. These worms are not noticed during meat inspections, nor are they killed by salting or smoking. Few people cook the meat long enough to kill the trichinae. The rat (another scavenger) also harbors this disease. There are dozens of other worms, germs, diseases and bacteria which are commonly found in pigs, many of which are specific to the pig, or found in greater frequency in pigs.
Pigs are biologically similar to humans, and their meat is said to taste similar to human flesh (Ed: By who?). Pigs have been used for dissection in biology labs due to the similarity between their organs and human organs (Ed: So have frogs and rabbits). People with insulin-dependent diabetes usually inject themselves with pig insulin (Ed: I sympathise with Muslim diabetics. Actually, porcine insulin isn't used anymore!). If you pour Coke (yes, the soda) on a slab of pork, and wait a little while, you will see worms crawl out of it (Ed: ???. This is really astoundingly grossly wrong).
Kindness to animals
Every creature was created by Allah for a purpose. The Prophet always encouraged being kind to animals. Although we should not eat the meat of the pig, it doesn't mean that we should hate pigs. We should show them the same kindness as any other animal, and not abuse or torture them. Pigs score high on tests devised to determine animal intelligence; in other words, they are very smart. It used to be that Europe people believed that pork would taste better if the pigs were kept in a state of filth, but this is not the natural inclination of the pig. When left to their own devices, it is said that pigs do not like to soil their sleeping quarters. As for their tendency to wallow in mud, that is done mainly to keep cool.

"You are what you eat" ------ American proverb
by Alyssa Samadi tzhre@tzhre.seanet.com
What a wonderfully fallacious article. Much of it was applicable in ancient times. Tim The Great says that is why many ancient cultures forbade eating pork. But with modern standards?
On further inspection, I saw:

Super Bowl
Stewed pork Chop Noodles

The first Haram instant noodles in Singapore! Pork lovers of the world, rejoice! Too bad it contains palm oil. Hrm, actually it may not contain any pork at all. Heck.
Now to find a Pizza delivery that is not Halal or Pseudo-Halal ("No pork, no lard"). Nothing beats real bacon.
(NB: No offence to those who don't eat Pork)
At the recent Durban conference against racism, some African governments were demanding reparations for the slave trade. One is led to think that much of the reparations, if paid, would not actually be used to compensate the victims, but just the 'victim' country. In fact, there was a significant amount of intra-Africa slave trading. Additionally, it would be impossible to track down all who 'suffered' from the slave trade.
This writer makes a very good point:

Slavery Reparations
[T] o the Editor:
It seems to me that Prof. Martin Kilson (letter, Sept. 6) compares apples and oranges in his contention about the similarities of reparations by the Germans to Jews and our government to African-Americans. It has been my understanding, as a Holocaust survivor (Auschwitz-Birkenau, prisoner No. 172099), that the German reparations were to those Jews who suffered directly, not to the descendants.
A logical extension of Mr. Kilson's comparison might be payments by the Egyptian government to the Jews who were descendants of the slaves who helped build pyramids and other structures during the times of the pharaohs.

Thought there was something deeper about angst (not just the general term used to describe teens wallowing in self-pity):
Angst:
German word for the anxiety or anguish produced by an acute awareness of the implications of human freedom. An important notion for existentialist philosophers, including especially Kierkegaard and Heidegger.
anxiety {Ger. Angst} :
According to many existentialist philosophers, the normal emotional response to the overwhelming responsibility entailed by human freedom.

Is this considered angsty? (angst - A feeling of anxiety or apprehension often accompanied by depression.
) If it is, I'm not unhappy to say that it is a much lower degree of angst than most drab colour scheme sites in which the text has to be highlighted to be read.
Oh damn. By the definition I just searched, many "angsty" sites aren't actually angsty. Just social / personal commentary. Ah well.
Anyway, my main complaint with envy.nu is the technical issues - slow speed, mistaken 'offsite linking' et al
In any case, my main page's name is patently un-pretentious, so maybe a little weird stuff here balances it out. I suppose it's a matter of degree. In view of the critique, I will strive to be un-angsty! Though I'm sure everyone's criterion / criteria differ(s) greatly.

It's slow, tis always down, it detects "offsite linking of hosted files" even when the page is hosted on their servers and it has a pretentious domain name.
And it's host to a whole host of angsty pages with journals in forboding colour schemes and irritating navigation and rants about life and headache inducing stuff.
Bah.

Lockergnomaniac Steven Neil Groginsky has submitted more tips to Lockergnome than any other person on the planet. Or universe, for that matter. This time around, he's playing with WinAmp. By default, the media player loads every plugin in the Plugin folder (even though all of them are not needed). Each (obviously) consumes system resources. "I created a sub-folder named 'Not in Use' and moved the plugins that I'm not currently using into it. WARNING: you have to make sure you know which filenames go with which plugins. Luckily, most of them install a text file with the same name. WinAmp may still load slowly, but at least I know I've done the most I can do -- and saved some memory and resources in the process." Along those WinAmp tweaking lines, how many skins do you have? Instead of keeping each in a separate sub-folder, ZIP them up to save disk space. Don't worry; WinAmp will unzip them automatically when you want to use them. But that's not all! Change the extension from ZIP to WSZ and you'll be able to apply the skin automatically by double-clicking it!
Lockergnome is a very interesting and useful computer newsletter.

It's a hodge-podge of the work of 4 years (from 1997 to the present) and it's not very coherent (the present webmaster didn't check the whole page for consistency)
For some reason, I found it quite funny. Among other things, you learn that the Council was the one which suggested the
Return of Associate Flesh Parade in 1999.
The Associate Flesh Paraders look so old:

X habits of highly slack people
1. Procrastination
Why do today what you can put off till tomorrow?
If anything was worth doing, it'd have been done already
2. Cutting Corners
What they don't know won't hurt them.
Why do anything that doesn't actually need doing?
If it really needed to be done, then you must have done it already.
3. Get others to do the work
Why work when others can do the work for you?
The delegation of responsibility is an important skill.
4. Wait until other people do the work
Patience is a virtue.
If a job is worth doing, then get someone in to do it properly.
5. Pass off other people's work as your own
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
If someone has taken the trouble to do something well, why waste the effort?

It was probably worth going to school yesterday (not that I wouldn't have, me being very guai about stuff like this) to hear the MCs at the Teachers Day Concert say that.
Already tickled by Flesh Parade's previous item and laughing out loud, this line caused me to throw my head back, smashing it into the floor of the Hall, whereupon I promptly left to compose myself.
Now everyone thinks (knows) I'm crazy.
That item of fashion desired by many. Those extremely short socks, so short that they reveal the ankle. They disappear into your shoes, such that you need to observe carefully to see that they are wearing socks in the first place. They often come in odd colours.
My sister used to wear Hot Socks when she was in RJC. She claims that they are comfortable.
In ACJC, just down the road, Hot Socks are a school culture. About a week ago (around Tuesday), I stopped a count that has been on for a few months - a count of how many ACJC girls *do not* wear Hot Socks.
Last Tuesday, I happened to be at Buona Vista MRT station just after one of ACJC's Prelim papers had ended and saw hordes of ACJC people.
Hot Socks seem to be a culture in ACJC. Due to the problems of the length of pants, it was not feasible for me to count the guys who didn't wear Hot Socks (or otherwise).
After an estimated 5 months (I didn't keep track of when I started) of counting, I have tallied the results and the grand total of the number of ACJC girls I've seen *not* wearing Hot Socks is... 35. (Conservatively) Correcting for double counting, the number would be 26. Conservatively estimating that I've seen 1/2 the ACJC population in the length of time since I started counting, I come to the (not so) startling conclusion that in the whole of ACJC, only 50 girls of 800 do not wear Hot Socks.
According to Melvin Tay Poh Huat (whose words must oft be taken with a shaker of salt), Hot Socks are worn by them as they:
"makes their legs look longer, more slender and hotter"
And to think that Hot Socks are banned in Hualalalala JC (aka HCJC) and TJC.

Apparently, the Council may not be right in their claim that all posters need to be approved by them. She said if they didn't approve, I could go to her or the Principal. Not likely that I'll be doing any more of this sort of thing, though, it being so late in the year.
In other news, the suspected female member of the Vegetarian Support group was seen with a bone (probably chicken) on her plate.

This whole week, the Council has been putting up all these posters with inspiring quotes for teachers like, "Teaching is the profession that teaches all other professions", which I am rather incensed by, for some reason. The Council likes to give us a sweetened version of reality with all their weird activities (eg: "Footprints in the sand, will you be my friend" - according to Kairen)
Close to 10AM this morning, "He who can, does. He who cannot, teaches. - George Bernard Shaw" starts appearing on the posters with the Council's Quotes. Apparently Mr Purvis likes to use this one a lot.
By 2, many of them have been appended with the new quote. Good arguments always have 2 sides, no?
I came out of History lecture at 5:20 or so and I found that Council had torn down many of their Teachers' Day posters, the ones with quotes. So, well, they're tearing down their own posters. I helped them dispose of a few.
And at ~5:40, the J1 Councillor Anamika (?) comes to me and asks, "Are you responsible for these", brandishing the torn down sheets of paper with the Shaw quote.
"Actually, yes"
"Do you know someone spent a lot of time making these"
I thought of saying, "Do you know I spent a lot of time writing the quotes on?" but didn't, because it is mean.
So I have a hastily thrown together line of argument that goes something like, Quotes can be used for many purposes. You shouldn't lie with quotes. If you quote famous people supporting Teachers' Day, I give a quote supporting the opposite side - the most famous anti-teacher Quote that I know of.
Giving up, she says, "but it's Teachers' Day", and I smile sweetly at her
"All your campaigns have failed." - Grace referring to the anti-Purple Uniform one(s)

0th Stage - You forward all sorts of rubbish - 'you will be deleted if you do not forward this to everyone', 'forward this to donate $2 to some child dying of cancer' and 'forward to everyone to see a penguin jumping about'
1st Stage - You don't greet people when they come online anymore.
2nd stage - You stay invisible all the time
3rd stage - You ignore people when they message you.
4th stage - You stop using ICQ.

At various points in the day, one will see a gathering of between two and four teachers talking (expatriate ones, but for one). These people have never been seen eating non-vegetarian food. They mostly sit and sip the poisoned coffee that the RJ school canteen offers, and talk.
I know for sure that two of the teachers are vegetarian, and since the rest have never been seen consuming meat, it is safe to assume that they don't.
So, Vegetarians of the world, rejoice! If you come to RJ, you can join the support group for vegetarians.
(Ugh, I'm sick.)
Council seems to be acting very vehemently about their ideals.
I'm only on stage 1 of the "disease" then. Did u hear abt the new chinese movie about a Taiwanese romance over ICQ?
There's also another critically acclaimed film, yun2 tun1 xiao3 jie3, produced by a singapore producer on self-exile in US (he doesn't like the censorship here). It's only shown in a small number of cinema theatres but is supposed to be excellent work.

I've been working on one for the last 2 days. It is being honed and will be submitted to the people there when it is ready.
Wednesday, August 22, 2001
Firstly, Council is having "Welfare Week". They always pretend to be very nice, but they have their own Agenda and workings.
Free Expressions was revealed to be 'Council Censored Free Expressions' when they tore down my anti-Purple poster earlier in the year becuase 'it has to be stamped'.
Tag Shoppe is ridiculous. If something was worth less than $50, I doubt anyone would care to steal it. A 'why you should not use Tag Shoppe' thing that I pinned to the notice board in the Concourse was also removed.
And they are very free with their digital camera. The issue of returning cutlery and crockery was made to be such a big affair, about "defending RJ from an invasion of crows and mynahs", when crows don't come here (maybe the Singapore Gun Club's efforts are succeeding). I pasted an addendum which said something about throwing ice and chasing the birds being more efficacious on Monday, and it was torn down by Tuesday morning.
The last isn't really a problem, but I thought it was quite interesting. The poster outside LT 1 saying, "Now you see it, now you don't... Take care of your stuff" and showing 2 photos where there was a wallet in one and no wallet in the other, magically appeared in my home room TS20 saying, "Now you see it outside LT 1, now you don't... Take care of your posters". Well. This was on Tuesday afternoon. Today, I walk past LT 1 and the poster has reappeared. Council is even sadder than me :) That's where their time goes to. This is possibly worse than the time they had to send a team to scour the Spectator's Gallery for my anti-Purple Posters earlier in the year.
Secondly, all the Named people were around. On the other side of the canteen, African was cavorting with her friends. At another area, Red Jacket was prancing around in his customary attire. A few tables away, Jiggle was sitting with her friends. But the worst was a table behind, where Elf Gone Wrong and Ugly Girls #1 to #7 were sitting with their class (I finally sighted #7 and took her off probation).
I did calm down, in the end, but I hope this sort of thing doesn't happen too often :)
Quote of the post (not yet on Improve Your English):
Has anyone ever told you you're crazy? - Changge on my "Now you see it, now you don't" act.
The dreaded ICQ disease.
When one first gets ICQ, one is very happy. However, after one to two years, this feeling of Euphoria wears out and one gets, slowly but surely, infected with ICQ disease.
1st Stage - You don't greet people when they come online anymore.
2nd stage - You stay invisible all the time
3rd stage - You ignore people when they message you.
To date, no cure has been found for this contagious disease.

Out of curiosity... I searched for "Raufie" on Google, and found Agagooga's page linked to on the 3 page. Guess which quote Google used to reference the word "Raufie"?

Fellow PSO players: Use my Section ID calculator *grin* at
Sectcalc
Its going to get an update when Version 2 releases for the US to commemorate the release. Meanwhile, try either flavour. Sectcalc standard doesn't look too pretty now (wait for the update) but contains some information on all the Section ID, and Sectcalc lite works really well and is pretty small and clean.
Welcome aboard, poster #3. Muhahahha. And no, I don't think that I'm taught by Aaron Loh, why? Who's Aaron Loh?
I agree with the jumble sale being unethical though. Its kinda crummy to lose something only to see it being sold by the councillors one year later. Still... can we say "Good Bargains"?
:: random musings
Just thought that since I was on audio, I'd keep on track. Heres a link to one of the best mp3 encoders out there:
LAME - Lame Ain't An Mp3 Encoder
It can be a little hard to use, especially if you don't like the command line, but its by far one of the fastest and most accurate encoders out there. The command line problem can be fixed by downloading a front-end for LAME, such as Razorlame, or by using a cd-ripping software such as EAC that supports LAME as an external compressor.
On a side note... does anyone else play Phantasy Star Online besides me and another friend I know? Well... version 2 is going to be released on September 11th. Its probably old news to any PSO player, but Yay! I can't wait... if only our prelims are not around that time... but one can't have everything.
:: suggestions
I vote we keep posts short, and if its really long, link to the "article" on another web page... kinda like those "news" sites where longer articles are given their own page. So readers need not scroll through chat logs to read other articles. Oh yeah, and keep the logs to 1 log page per week? Something like that, so it doesn't take too long to load.
Monday, August 20, 2001
Gabriel you're like posting 90% of the stuff here. That should tell you something- *censored*
btw I approached a councillor running the "jumble sale" to register my complaint that it was unethical. Even more so when she (identity kept confidential) admitted that there were students who had lost their stuff for a whole year and had to pay to collect them back.
Are any of you taught by Aaron loh?

How to Use Safety Pins and String to hold up a tucked out blouse, while maintaining the illusion that it is tucked in unless one has a more than cursory look:
1. Tuck out your blouse
2. Fold it to desired length
3. Pin Safety Pins in 2-4 strategic locations ("safety pins at the ends... (at the waist and at the hem of the erm.. blouse)")
4. Thread string/thread through to hold the folds up
This does seem like a lot of trouble to go to. And it's still detectable, albeit much less. Anyhow, if you get careless and the metal of the safety pin can be seen from the outside (as did the J1 girl I saw that day and the former CHIJ girl who got busted by David Liew for wearing her CHIJ blouse instead of the purple uniform) (it's supposed to pin through the fold, not out of it), you will face doom!
In my 14/8 rant, I talked about the art of spotting the use of Safety Pins. Apparently I have not been dilligent enough in my efforts. Today, Grace informed me about the existence of a variant of the Art of Safety Pins. Safety Pins with Strings.
It all started when I sent her my blog. A condensed account of the dialogue follows.
Her:
*reads page and snickers*
do you mean safetypins or safetypinswithstrings?
Me:
strings? what strings?
Her:
ahahahahahahahaha. *manic laughter*
Me:
what's so funny?
Her:
there are things you know naught of yet.
Me:
ooo
tell me
initiate me into the mysteries of safety pins and safety pins with strings, oh great one
Her:
*snigger* not going to. figure it out yourself. safetypins with strings are eminently less detectable than plainoldsafetypins.
Me:
oei
Her:
you have to give me a complete glossary of which nicknames belong to whom because i totally can't tell cos i don't know anyone cos i'm oblivious.
Me:
you want to know?
or you don't?
Her:
i do want to know.
Me:
ok :)
tell me about strings first
Her:
no.
Me:
why not.
Her:
because some things are beyond your comprehension
Me:
why don't you want to tell me?
I'm intrigued
Me:precisely to intrigue you
*wicked grin*
someday my emotional manipulation will get me killed
With my curiosity piqued, I have no choice but to continue my research into the realm of Safety Pins. If anyone out there can aid me in my noble goal, I will be eternally grateful.
I prefer to think of the cheer as one "unique" to TCHS. Here is the complete cheer:
"Shan Ge" (Mountain Song, in Chinese)
Ei...
Shan shang liu shui xi li li ei, hei a a yo.
Shan shang liu shui hua la la ei, hei a a yo.
Xi li li eh Hua la la eh, Hua Zhong Hua Zhong ding gua gua eh...
*repeat as necessary*
[ English Translation ]
Hey....
"Xi Li Li", when water flows down the mountains, hey yo!
"Hua La La", when water flows down the mountains, hey yo!
"Xi Li Li" hey! "Hua La La" hey! The Chinese High is the best, yay!
*repeat as necessary*
:: Comments.
It seriously isn't that weird. Now, the 'give me an oei' one is weird. Shan Ge is a traditional chinese tune.
