The Travel Expert: Airport liquid rules were ‘security theatre’ all along - "Air travel liquid restrictions are little more than “theatre”, according to a renowned security expert. Bruce Schneier, a security technologist and fellow at Harvard University, told The Travel Expert podcast that curbs on flying with liquids in excess of 100ml, introduced exactly 20 years ago and still widespread, are “absurd”. “It’s 100 per cent security theatre,” he said. “They’re not doing it based on security, they are doing it based on a compromise, which would make no sense if it was a security problem. “If I walk through airport security with a gun and they find it… they ruin my day. If I walk through security with a bottle of liquid and they find it, they throw it in the trash and let me through. “Because there’s no penalty for failure, there’s no reason not to try multiple times. Here’s something so dangerous that you can’t take it on an aeroplane, yet so safe that [security officers] will throw it in a bin next to them.”... “The problems with these things is that they defend against the tactics that were used last time, and not the tactics that might be used next time,” Schneier said. “Did it ever stop anything?
