A bail document seen by The Telegraph refers to an allegation of possessing a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence and a further allegation of stalking related to a photograph of a house that appeared on his social media.  He said he was held overnight in a cell before being interviewed.  Mr Richelieu-Booth said he was initially released on bail until late October.  He alleges that police officers then visited his property on three further occasions before he was re-arrested in October for allegedly breaching his bail conditions. However, that charge was later dropped... Describing his ordeal as “massive overreach”, Mr Richelieu-Booth added: “Anybody should be allowed to say anything they wish, as long as it’s not hateful.  “When did we go from a society where you can have a discussion with somebody and go, ‘You know what? I don’t like your opinion. I’m going to disagree with you, but I’m not going to tell you why, I’m going to call the police’.  “When did we get so thin-skinned as a society?”  He said: “I’ve always believed in truth and justice and stood up for the police and believed they are doing an important job of keeping order. Two-tier policing of protests is REAL: Damning report into the Met calls for Labour mayor Sadiq Khan to be stripped of control - "Two-tier policing of protests is 'not merely a perception but a reality' in Britain's biggest force, a damning report has revealed.  Scotland Yard is prioritising the rights of demonstrators over the ordinary public, failing to make arrests and treating some protest groups more leniently, which may lead the public to believe 'the forces of law and order have lost control of the streets and yielded control to a mob,' according to a new assessment.  A report by the think tank Policy Exchange has called for the Metropolitan Police to be put back into 'special measures' due to its failure to handle protests properly and tackle runaway rates of mobile phone thefts, burglary and shoplifting.  In a stark assessment of the Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley's three years in office, the report points to public confidence in the force falling to an all-time low as many residents and visitors believe 'there is a culture of impunity to crime in London'.  It comes as the force is solving only a tiny fraction of thefts, identifying the culprit in merely 1 in 20 robberies and burglaries, 1 in 13 shoplifting offences and 1 in 179 street muggings.  Now the Policy Exchange wants London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan to be stripped of responsibility for the Met's oversight, saying the Home Secretary should be given the power to ensure the force's performance improves. Entitled 'A Long, Long Way To Go', the report criticises the force for choosing 'to prioritise the rights of protestors over the rights of the wider public' and accuses officers of doing more to protect Muslims over the Jewish community in various demonstrations. It says: 'With the apparently differential treatment of different groups based on either the cause of the protest or the identity of those protesting, it has become increasingly clear that "two-tier policing" is not merely a perception but a reality.  'This inconsistent application of police powers and the law is perhaps one of the most troubling aspects of modern policing – a factor which has seriously damaged policing's reputation for fairness in the eyes of many.'  In one example cited, the force applied for 'very stringent conditions' in a United Kingdom Independence Party protest in Tower Hamlets on October 25, on the grounds that the area had the largest percentage of Muslim residents in the UK and the protest caused 'significant concern locally'... 'If the rationale for the force's decision is because they feared public disorder from those resisting the protest it is tantamount to an admission that 'mob-rule' has taken priority over the rule of law – an unacceptable state of affairs.'  The report also found: 'Too often police choose to prioritise the rights and freedoms of protestors over the rights of ordinary people going about their daily lives', with officers failing to arrest those committing criminal damage or shouting 'jihad' at pro-Palestinian rallies.  It called for the Met to face an inspection on its approach to protests, saying there needs to be transparency about decision-making. Still, some credit must go to the police. Beyond a few scuffles, they managed to keep both sides apart and the night ended peacefully with no arrests... A few days after the vigil, police contacted the horse owner, not to investigate what happened – but because 'they were concerned' about his welfare.  Today, the horseman is keen to play down the incident: 'It looked more like a protest than a vigil. So I stopped by and saw some people and friends that I knew."

On page 16, he offers the classic extremist disclaimer: "...it is very important not to fall into the absurd delusion of thinking that all Jews globally are somehow the participants in the globalist/imperialist scheme..." It is a predictable pattern: first, he pushes the blood libel of "Zionist" control over the global order, then attempts a half-hearted qualification. The accusation remains exactly the same, only the packaging changes. He is not an outlier. Mainstream politicians and pundits in left-leaning circles have been peddling these exact narratives for over three years. That’s before we even get into the right wing "bro" podcasts and the algorithmically fueled echo chambers of TikTok, where this poison is repackaged and fed to a generation looking for someone to blame for their own stagnation. What is chilling is how much of this "manifesto" is a copy-paste of the narratives currently being normalized in activist spaces. While not every critic of Israel or capitalism is a terrorist, we have to stop pretending these ideas exist in a vacuum. We are seeing a synthesis of ideologies that creates a perfect storm for individuals who feel entitled to a world they haven't earned. This isn't a political philosophy; it is a manifesto of profound, pathetic bitterness. It is the cry of a pathetic man who resented women for rejecting him, resented the West for not validating his self-importance, and invented a Jewish “Zionist" boogeyman to explain away his own failures. It is a toxic, volatile mix of sexual frustration and political hatred. What is especially dishonest is the attempt by mainstream Canadian outlets to label this individual as "right-wing." It’s an intellectual fraud and complete lie. Under “high capitalism,” he argues, human relationships have been commodified, economic pressures have intensified sexual market inequalities and liberal consumer culture has eroded the conditions that once allowed average men to find mates... Envisioning himself as some sort of revolutionary thinker, Hatfield encourages the publication of his manifesto in Russian, Arabic, Farsi, Hindi, Spanish, Portuguese and Mandarin, suggesting it may be “even more well-received” in these countries than in “western nations.” His goal is to “elucidate the true nature of the West to the inhabitants of those places, so that they may be disillusioned of any residual notions of western advancement or ‘superiority’ that they might still hold.”... Hatfield certainly has complaints about what he sees as common relationship problems with women, but he actually doesn’t blame them directly — he blames capitalism for what he refers to as “gloomy and pervasive male loneliness.”... Hatfield suggests that the primary mode of intimacy in Canada and the United States is hypergamy. Once again, he blames capitalism for this state of affairs, leaning heavily on Karl Marx’s “Communist Manifesto” and using terms like “bourgeois,” “proletarians” and “lumpenproletariat” throughout. He complains about bankers, merchants and businessmen. He argues that monogamy simply proved to be less profitable for the bourgeois than hypergamy. In fact, he says the characteristic feature of the hypergamy state is “an intense and appallingly unequal distribution of intimacy within the human population,” which sounds like a bizarre reformulation of Marx’s critique of wealth distribution under capitalism, but applied to intimacy. And, of course, if you blame capitalism, you likely see communism as a cure for all your woes... The most shocking part of the document is when Hatfield muses over who is “most worthy of being liquidated,” after already deciding that terror is both “effective” and “moral.” He then moves on to his targets. In fact, the only mention of women as targets isn’t even specific (he lists “prominent individuals who are pornographic actors or actresses”). Surprisingly, Hatfield writes, “Women, though their behaviour can be very hurtful, are generally not at fault for things, nor are most of their male partners.” Instead, he insists, “It is the highly powerful and influential people — favoured males or otherwise — along with their most loyal, vile and crucial accomplices who are at fault for everything.” He then lists two classes of targets. Class A includes individuals like powerful CEOs, billionaires and elite bankers. Chillingly, it also includes places where they should be attacked, like conferences and corporate headquarters, echoing the alleged murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson by Luigi Mangione, who some on the left consider a hero. Class B includes individuals like drug dealers, pedophiles and creators of depraved content, like porn... Hatfield then writes about “permanent revolution” and the “preservation of the future order.” Again, he draws on Marx for his future vision of a world without hypergamy: the abolition of private property without compensation, the centralization of credit in a state bank, a planned economy and full state control over transportation and communications. Disturbingly, he ends by encouraging readers to use blades, bombs, guns or all of the above to attack the people and places on his list, advising them to: “Be unflinching, go forth, and KILL THEM ALL!” Is Hatfield an incel? In some respects, yes. But his violent, ideological bent is unarguably communist."

I’ve seen how civil servants work. The Home Office will never stop the grooming gangs - "Over half a decade of working with the Home Office on countering extremism, I saw it for myself, time and time again: a civil service culture that instinctively resists scrutiny of anything involving religion or ethnicity.  The moment you even suggest that the ethnicity or faith of perpetrators might be one factor among many worth examining, certain civil servants recoil.  They tell you that looking into it might “inflame community tensions”, or “increase hate crimes against Muslims” or “cause policing issues”.  These arguments become a convenient way to close down honest discussion. That’s the exact approach that now appears to be dominating the Government’s inquiry into the grooming gangs scandal, and I worry it means that the state will never truly tackle the underlying issues.  I’ve spent much of my working life engaging various government departments on issues of hate crime, community cohesion and extremism. In 2012 I set up Tell Mama, an organisation which monitors anti-Muslim hate and supports victims.  This meant countless meetings with the Home Office to highlight groups whose values and world view were at direct odds with the values of our nation; groups who were willing to inflame division and tensions through their actions. I would regularly write to Home Office and Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) officials to highlight report findings and the deeply divisive videos and content that Islamist groups were putting out into the public and social media space.  In particular back then – in the mid 2010s – I was alarmed to discover that Prevent coordinators, the people tasked with countering extremism, were regularly engaging with what I saw as extremist groups. On countless occasions I put it to the civil servants in charge of counter-extremism that it seemed deeply antithetical to the cause of counter-extremism to engage with groups who believed in Sharia marriage, polygamy and openly attacked Muslims who engaged with Jews. Some of these groups didn’t fully agree with the democratic structures of our country – this was serious stuff and especially when they were willing to use conflicts in the Middle East to inflame tensions in the UK.  When I raised it, though, the response was a wall of polite obstruction. Each local authority, I was told, makes its own decisions. There might be legal risks in naming these organisations. Some civil servants insisted these were simply “legitimate Muslim groups” who should be included in community engagement, as though their form of Islamic interpretations were “normative” Islam.  It was a masterclass in bureaucratic resistance. And behind every excuse was an ideology: a belief that acknowledging the problem might undermine social cohesion. A handful of civil servants understood the risks, but most preferred to look away. It taught me a lesson that feels painfully relevant to the current inquiry into grooming gangs. When civil servants are driven by ideology rather than evidence, difficult truths are buried, and real people pay the price.  Some of these people are still there, working in the Home Office and MHCLG today. The problem as I see it goes all the way back to Gordon Brown’s government. That period, post-Blair, was when the themes of social cohesion and community harmony became dominant within government. The old Department for Communities and Local Government (now MHCLG) grew out of that thinking, and over time it embedded a particular type of civil servant – people whose entire careers have been shaped by what I call “kumbaya politics”. By that I mean the kind of world view where everyone sits around holding hands, pretending that the world is fine and that we must never look too closely at uncomfortable realities for fear of upsetting someone.  Nowhere is that more entrenched than in the MHCLG. Within that department, there’s a powerful narrative that says: anything which risks making one community look bad must be resisted. And when that mindset filters down through advisers and policy officials, it becomes impossible to have a transparent, evidence-based conversation about complex social issues. In the Home Office there are some who will say that even using the term “Islamist extremism” is offensive or counterproductive – this, despite the fact that hundreds of British citizens have been killed by Islamist extremists on our own soil. If they can’t even bring themselves to say the words, how are they going to face the even more sensitive questions that arise around grooming gangs?  This is the machinery that survivors of grooming are up against. A civil service very sensitive to being labelled as racist and reluctant to “open up racial divides” by looking into the issue in detail. Sadly these themes emerged in the statements of the abuse survivors who resigned from their roles in the Government inquiry this week. When I saw that one of the women, “Elizabeth” from Rotherham, quit on the grounds that she felt “selective narratives [were] being promoted – ones that appear to serve particular agendas, especially around issues of race and the narrative of widening the scope”, I was completely unsurprised.  Survivors want results and openness, but what they’re meeting instead is a political and bureaucratic system that prizes optics over truth. The survivors are colliding head-on with a civil service that, for decades, has prioritised image-management and social cohesion above honesty.  And it’s not just ideology – it’s also groupthink. Over the years, a small circle of advisers from within Muslim communities have come to dominate this space. Many are closely aligned with the Labour Party, and they sing the same tune: that Islamophobia is the overriding issue facing Muslims, that Islamism should not be discussed, and that grooming has nothing whatsoever to do with culture or faith. I have worked for 25 years fighting anti-Muslim hatred and measuring its rise – I know the reality of that threat, but I also know that this narrow narrative has suffocated all other perspectives. Dissenters like me, people who have challenged both the far-Right and Islamist extremism, are no longer invited in. Those who are, remain locked in a self-reinforcing cycle, telling ministers exactly what they expect to hear. And so the same mistakes are repeated, again and again.  If this inquiry is to mean anything, it must shine a light not only on the perpetrators, but on the machinery of resistance that has allowed these failures to persist for so long. Until we confront the ideological filters within the civil service itself, we will never get to the truth which the British public deserve."

For as long as I can remember, even before “affordability” became a prominent theme in American public discourse, politicians and pundits have tracked the prices of homes, gasoline, milk, eggs, and other supermarket staples. Affordability, or the lack of it, has long been the explicit goal or chief complaint of policymakers debating housing, public finance, and economic regulation. In these debates, each side wants to show that its proposals will make constituents’ lives better—that is, more affordable. The focus typically falls on issues like housing supply, tax rates, and social-welfare spending.

Zohran Mamdani’s rise to the New York City mayoralty is a prime example. His campaign relentlessly emphasized affordability. From freezing rents and providing fare-free buses to building more public housing and launching nonprofit, government-run grocery stores, most Mamdani messages centered on lowering costs.

At the same time, Mamdani staked out troubling positions on public-safety issues—abolishing the NYPD’s gang database, refusing to hire more officers, and imposing a moratorium on clearing homeless encampments. Many predict that, if implemented, these initiatives will erode public safety and order. To the extent that proves correct, Mamdani’s public-safety agenda would also undercut his stated commitment to affordability.

Often missing from the affordability debate is an appreciation of how public safety and order shape economic well-being. Policymakers seldom draw the connection, yet affordability and safety are tightly intertwined. When leaders fail on public safety, their constituents’ economic prospects decline with it.

Controlling crime and disorder is often treated as a good unto itself, and rightly so. Crime affects a host of other areas: real-estate values, economic mobility, private investment, and, of course, the direct social costs of victimization. Failure to control it undermines the bottom lines of those living in the neighborhoods most affected. This point matters even more because many misguided criminal-justice reforms are justified in part on fiscal grounds. Incarceration is expensive, reformers say, so we should do less of it for taxpayers’ sake. But loosening the social controls exerted by police departments and prisons carries its own price: rising crime imposes massive economic costs.

Many Americans tend to view a crime’s costs as falling primarily on the victim. Few consider its broader effects on society. That’s a crucial error.

Think of a crime as a stone tossed into a lake. It breaks the surface at a single point, but the ripples extend far beyond. Some crimes are mere pebbles in this analogy; others land like cinder blocks, sending larger waves that radiate much farther. Once one understands this, it becomes clearer why Tom has an interest in preventing Dick from murdering Harry, even if Harry is a complete stranger to Tom. The negative effects associated with Harry’s murder extend to Tom, whether or not he realizes it. The societal impact of a single act of violent victimization may seem small; but in the aggregate, and over time, even those who are never personally victimized will find themselves paying a toll.

Though it’s not easy to capture all of crime’s ripple effects, a robust social-science literature offers well-informed estimates of the social costs of at least some offenses—and the figures are alarming. In a 2010 study published in Drug and Alcohol Dependence, an international scholarly journal, scholars from the University of Miami and University of Colorado–Denver provided updated, crime-specific estimates of the social costs associated with offenses ranging from murder to theft. The authors note that “more than 23 million criminal offenses were committed in 2007, resulting in approximately $15 billion in economic losses to the victims and $179 billion in government expenditures [all in 2008 dollars] on police protection, judicial and legal activities, and corrections.” In today’s dollars, that totals roughly $290 billion—more than the U.S. Department of Education spent in 2024. To contextualize those numbers further, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration estimated the total annual price tag of major weather and climate disasters (those exceeding $1 billion) between 2020 and 2024 at just under $150 billion.

In deriving their estimates, the authors of the 2010 study broke the social costs of crime into four categories:

Victim costs (property losses, medical bills, and lost earnings)

Criminal-justice system costs (policing, adjudication, and corrections)

Crime career costs (the lost productivity associated with the offender’s choice to offend rather than engage in legal work)

Intangible costs (indirect damages to victims like “pain and suffering, decreased quality of life, and psychological distress”)

They then provided estimates for 13 offense categories. For example, the direct or tangible costs of a single murder exceeded $1.2 million. The total cost of a murder to society—once intangible and crime career harms are included—came in just under $9 million. Murder, for obvious reasons, is an outlier. But other crimes are far from cheap and happen more often: the social cost of a rape exceeds $240,000; an aggravated assault, just over $107,000; and a robbery, just over $42,000.

And crime and disorder can impose other serious harms, especially in the most dangerous areas of American cities. An empirical literature on the relationship between crime and educational performance, for example, suggests that a lack of safety can meaningfully undermine academic success. In Urban Studies, a group of scholars found that repeated exposure to criminal violence on their blocks negatively affected New York City students’ standardized-test performance. Similar findings emerged in Chicago, where scholars linked students’ poorer performance on academic assessments to their exposure to a homicide within a week of the assessment.

A study published in 2018 showed how the “Beltway Sniper” attacks in 2002 “significantly reduced school-level proficiency rates in schools within five miles of an attack.” Yet another analysis of the link between gun violence and standardized test performance in Syracuse, New York, between 2009 and 2015 found that “[s]tate standardized test scores for ELA [English language arts] and math were found to be 50% lower in the elementary schools located within higher concentration gunshot areas, than in elementary schools in lower gunshot areas” and that “[h]igher levels of gun violence within school catchment areas were significantly associated with higher rates of ELA and math failure.” A 2019 study in The Russell Sage Foundation Journal of the Social Sciences documented: “Middle school students exposed to neighborhood violent crime before the ELA exam who attend schools perceived to be less safe or to have a weak sense of community score 0.06 and 0.03 standard deviations lower, respectively.”

Educational performance is a key predictor of, and perhaps even a prerequisite for, economic mobility—another outcome shaped by criminal violence. One oft-cited study found that “a one standard deviation decline in violent crime as experienced during late adolescence increases the expected income rank in adulthood by at least 2 points.” The study also found that “a one standard deviation decline in the murder rate increases the expected income rank by roughly 1.5 points.” This makes intuitive sense: If your adolescence is dominated by worries about personal safety, how much can you focus on meeting the requirements for economic success?

Though many American cities have seen crime declines recently, crime levels in those cities’ most troubled neighborhoods remain far above what can be considered tolerable. In a paper published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, Brown University’s Brandon del Pozo and coauthors found that, in some American neighborhoods, the risk of violent death for young men exceeded that faced by frontline U.S. combat troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Even in high-crime neighborhoods that fall below that benchmark, homicide rates are many times higher than the national average.

In neighborhoods with the biggest crime problems, staying safe requires real work and brain power. No wonder, then, that the available evidence seems to suggest that neighborhood violence is also associated with poorer mental health, including clinically significant anxiety and depression. That was the prevailing finding of a 2021 literature review appearing in Social Science & Medicine.

Crime can also have concrete effects on the asset that often accounts for most of the average American family’s wealth: their home. The homeownership rate in the U.S. was just under 66 percent in 2022. According to Pew Research, “Half of U.S. homeowners derived more than 45 percent of their wealth from home equity alone.” That share is even higher for black and Hispanic homeowners, for whom home values constitute between 63 percent and 66 percent of total wealth. I note this disparity because black and Hispanic Americans disproportionately bear the brunt of the nation’s violent-crime problem. In testimony before the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights in 2023, I laid out the relevant facts on that disparity.

Consider an illustrative excerpt: “In New York City, . . . a minimum of 95 percent of all shooting victims and 85 percent of all homicide victims have been black or Hispanic every year going back to 2008, despite those groups making up just 52 percent of the city’s population. . . . Relative to their share of the population, these groups are also consistently statistically overrepresented among victims of rape, robbery, and felonious assault.” Meanwhile, “in Chicago, where 57.9 percent of the population is black or Hispanic, those groups constituted 95 percent of homicide victims in 2019, 96 percent in 2020, 96 percent in 2021, and 95 percent in 2022. . . . Relative to their share of the city’s population, those groups are also consistently statistically overrepresented among victims of robbery, aggravated assault, criminal sexual assault, aggravated battery, and violent crime, generally.”

This should matter more to progressive policymakers, who largely attribute the racial wealth gap to disparities in homeownership. The National Community Reinvestment Coalition, for example, notes: “For most families, their home is the primary way they store and build wealth. The Black–White homeownership gap is therefore the primary driver of the Black–White racial wealth divide. . . . In fact, between 2013 and 2022, more than 90 percent of the wealth gains for Black Americans came from homeownership.” One would expect, then, that self-styled progressives would calibrate their public-safety policies to protect the home values of the very people whose interests they claim to represent.

Numerous studies have empirically linked crime and home values. A 2019 analysis based in Sweden found: “By moving a house 1 km further away from a crime hot spot, its value increases by more than SEK 30,000 (about EUR 2,797).” A 2012 study based on data from the United Kingdom found that “each additional case of anti-social behavior lowers house prices in the same street by approximately 1 percent and each additional case of violent crime by 2 percent.” In 2013, the Inter-American Development Bank analyzed how residential property values in Brazil were affected by perceptions about public safety, estimating that “increasing the sense of security in the home by one standard deviation would increase average home values by R$1,513 (US$757), or about US$13.6 billion, if applied to all 18.0 million households in the study area.” Note that some of these effects were driven by perceptions of safety—extensive evidence, informed by Broken Windows theory, shows that perception is influenced not only by crime but also by visible signs of disorder.

And it works the other way, too: declining crime boosts home values. A 2012 paper from the Center for American Progress studying eight U.S. cities found that “a 10 percent reduction in homicides would substantially expand revenues from property taxes in all eight cities.”

The effect isn’t confined to residential property values. In the Journal of Regional Science, a collaboration between the NYU Furman Center, UCLA’s Ziman Center, and the Federal Reserve found suggestive evidence that crime depresses commercial property values and that the negative impact was strongest “in neighborhoods with lower incomes and higher shares of minority residents.”

Many community advocates are understandably quick to call for more investment in underserved neighborhoods struggling with high crime. Yet we rarely hear them urging local leaders to crack down on that crime. Recent years have offered plenty of examples of how failure to control disorder makes investment less attractive—including the widely reported closures of pharmacies and big-box stores that were fighting high levels of retail theft. A 2022 Journal of Urban Economics study found that higher crime rates reduced consumers’ willingness to visit establishments in affected neighborhoods, particularly at night. Evidence suggests that crime not only keeps away customers from outside the community but also erodes the resident customer base. In an influential 1999 analysis published in The Review of Economics and Statistics, Julie Cullen and Steven Levitt found substantial crime-related population declines driven by out-migration.

Affordability isn’t self-creating—it’s a by-product of good policy. Delivering it requires more than subsidies for things that have grown more expensive. Nor is “affordable” synonymous with “good.” Letting crime and disorder spiral out of control might drive down home values, for example, but few would count that as a triumph of affordability. The goal should be to make good things more affordable, and that means creating conditions in which residents can acquire the skills and assets needed to sustain a higher quality of life. Safety and public order are prerequisites for that progress. Policymakers who promise “affordability” should remember a lesson most of us learned as kids: safety first.

So terrified was the criminal justice system by the threat of social unrest it was determined to clamp down on anyone who dared challenge it.

As most of you will know, on July 29 2024, on the evening of the Southport massacre of three little girls, Lucy was in quite a state. Diagnosed with PTSD after Harry’s death, she was easily triggered by any report of children suffering. The horrific incident, in which an unidentified male ran amok with a knife at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class on the first day of the summer holidays, had tipped her over the edge.

The fact that Axel Rudakubana was originally said by the media to be a Cardiff-born “quiet choir boy” angered Lucy, as did the insistence by police and MPs that the attack was not “terror related”, despite the targets being young Western girls enjoying moving their bodies to “decadent” pop music (not unlike the jihadist attack on the Ariana Grande concert at Manchester Arena which I have always attributed to Islamist misogyny), the discovery (we later learnt) of an al-Qaeda training manual on Rudakubana’s computer, and the presence of enough ricin under his bed to poison everyone in his street.

In the heat of the moment, Lucy put an angry and deeply unpleasant post on X – “Mass deportation now, set fire to all the f---ing hotels full of all the b-----ds for all I care, while you’re at it take the treacherous government and politicians with them. I feel physically sick knowing what these families will now have to endure. If that makes me racist, so be it.” She then took the dog for a walk, got home, thought better of what she’d said and took the tweet down within three hours of posting it.

Lucy was deeply ashamed of the tweet. “It doesn’t represent who I am”. That should have been the end of it, but somebody (believed by the Connolly family to be a Labour councillor) screenshotted it.

Lucy posted again, this time saying that “violence is not the answer”, but by then her original post had gone viral. The police came to arrest her at the start of a day when her living room was full of the small children she looked after. After an interview, it was reported by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) that Mrs Connolly had told police she “did not like immigrants and claimed that children were not safe from them”. She said nothing of the sort, but by the time the CPS admitted it the damage was done. Within hours, she was all over the media as “Tory councillor’s racist wife”.

Lucy was denied bail, although as a first-time offender with a blameless record she was the perfect candidate for it. With remarkable speed, her case was rushed through. Lucy was held on remand in prison and was persuaded by a duty solicitor that “going guilty” was her best option if she wanted to be home in time for Christmas with her 12-year-old daughter.

Such a case might be expected to be heard in a magistrates’ court – I was told by one horrified magistrate that she would be “looking for any reason not to jail someone like Lucy” – but a magistrate could not have given Lucy a long sentence, something we could speculate the state was rather keen on in the aftermath of the Southport “riots”.

The Connollys were shocked when the judge at Birmingham Crown Court delivered a lecture on what a diverse and tolerant nation the UK was and then, apparently ignoring all the mitigating factors and the powerful testimonials from ethnic-minority parents, sentenced Lucy to a shocking 31 months in jail.

I was deeply suspicious about Lucy Connolly’s case. Ray Connolly was almost as demonised as Lucy for insisting on Sky News “my wife is not a racist”. I believed him. After my own brush with police over a long-deleted tweet, I began to talk to Lucy in prison, and heard how she was being denied the normal leave granted even to hardcore offenders. I came to the chilling conclusion she was effectively a political prisoner.

After I wrote about Lucy, her story was picked up around the world, contributing to a growing alarm that Britain – ironically led by “human rights” lawyer Sir Keir Starmer – was exercising censorship of our ancient free-speech rights.

Much of this was surmise and not easy to prove. Questioned about the case, the Prime Minister said he had no knowledge of it. Lord Hermer, the Attorney General, was said not to have been involved in the sentencing of Mrs Connolly and others arrested in connection with the Southport riots. When Lucy applied to the CPS for her files, they said they didn’t have them.

Like many things Lucy was told, that wasn’t true. She put in a SAR (Subject Access Request) and this week was finally sent all the relevant documents. Some of what they contain is utterly damning – not of Lucy but of the criminal justice system that was clearly in a hurry to punish her as harshly as possible.

Lucy was charged on the night of August 9. By 9.45am the following day – a Saturday, when good lawyers are hard to find – the CPS had got confirmation that Lord Hermer had signed off the prosecution. Up early, was he? Emails said the case had gone through as an “emergency prosecution”, what one senior barrister described to me as “almost certainly unlawful”.

“They have to prove it’s an emergency – and it clearly isn’t,” he said. “What is it they’re trying to prevent? Mrs Connolly had already deleted her tweet. Saying it’s an emergency prosecution is clearly political.”

On email, the CPS continued: “There is evidence of other racist tweets sent on L.C’s account. Both before and after the particular tweet. This demonstrates that this was not a one-off regrettable tweet but part of her dislike for immigrants and a desire for…” [The final word of the sentence is redacted.]

Not true. “No further racist tweets were found on my phone or my Twitter account,” Lucy says. “This is confirmed by Northamptonshire Police in a reply to a complaint I made against them. There is one charge for one tweet on the indictment.” If the police or CPS claimed there were other racist tweets then they “misled the court,” says the barrister, “which is very serious.”

Astonishingly, district judges had been informed about “these cases” (linked to Southport presumably) and were told they must be put in “the next available slots”. Who was telling them that? Surely, it was the Ministry of Justice or even the Attorney General himself. “Unconstitutional” is what the barrister calls it.

Reasons cited for denying Lucy bail twice are “obviously unlawful”, he says. She didn’t need “protection” as she could be safe at home with her family. Also, there was no danger of a repeat offence, as the documents claim. “Police could have taken away her phone and her computer. Again, it looks like a political decision.”

The documents record that, on August 22, Lucy’s solicitor attended her second bail hearing (the first request had been refused). The hearing lasted two minutes. Just long enough to read out Lucy’s name, date of birth and address. “The decision had already been made,” Lucy tells me. “They clearly weren’t prepared to listen to any of my mitigating factors because how could they in such a short amount of time?” Either her solicitor didn’t offer a defence, or he wasn’t allowed to.

The courts were also told that charges and sentencing should reflect the “seriousness” with which Parliament “has approached the issue of racial hostility”. What has Parliament got to do with it? Isn’t the judiciary supposed to be independent?

As Lucy’s was a first offence she could have been fined and her case heard in a magistrates’ court. But, in the documents, the CPS reveals that they’ve been told that people (involved in Southport) are going to get custodial sentences of more than 12 months. Judges have been told that they will have to award a certain sentence. “They have a Sentencing Council which they claim is independent,” says the barrister. “Specifying what the sentence should be is definitely political interference.”

The documents also reference Frank Ferguson, head of the Crown Prosecution Service’s Special Crime and Counter Terrorism Division, who said in a statement issued after Lucy pleaded guilty on September 2: “During police interview, Lucy Connolly stated she had strong views on immigration, told officers she did not like immigrants and claimed that children were not safe from them.”

“This was not what was said,” according to Lucy. “Police interviews confirm I did not say I did not like immigrants. I said I was concerned about undocumented men arriving in the UK illegally and we don’t know what they’ve done or where they’re from. This was later corrected by the CPS to reflect what I’d actually said.”

None of the above is particularly surprising to be honest, although I still find it shocking. “It just confirms everything we suspected,” says Lucy. “I’m just surprised they were prepared to put it down in black and white.”

With Starmer and Hermer preparing to restrict trial by jury, there seems no let-up in the authoritarian crackdown on “hate speech” (very often just telling the truth) that saw Lucy Connolly cruelly and absurdly spend more than a year away from her child. The same criminal justice system which gives insanely lenient sentences to foreign rapists did, in effect, put on a show trial for a white, working-class mum of previously good character who called out an asylum system which poses a growing danger to women and girls.

Well, it backfired. Lucy’s case became notorious. Once her draconian release conditions are lifted in a year’s time, and she can travel abroad, she has an open invitation to go and speak at the White House about the way she was fitted up to act as a deterrent to others who feel inclined to criticise what Lucy rightly called “treacherous government and politicians” who have lost control of our borders.
