I've been taking turns with Sinsiang to do fatigue at the Nee Soon 500m range this week. It is really quite good to be attached there - you get stayout the night before, it's brainless, easy and not too tiring work, you can spend the time reading, they buy Roti Prata for us sometimes, every weekend is a long weekend, you may get off days here and there and barring any unforseen circumstances, you can fall out before 5 pm. However, you have to report at 7:30am (at least on paper), and it is a good 20 min walk in from the bus stop, it is boring, dreary work and worst of all, you only get the wretched Malay food, which has copious amounts of chili in it and which is similar everyday. I've always maintained that chili is used to disguise food that is bad - in both senses of the word: un-fresh and un-palatable - by overwhelming and destroying your tastebuds.

I was asked by the range RSM to hop on to his 1 1/2 tonner while he was ferrying supplies. Heh, I must hitch a ride from passing Army vehicles in the future to save time.

Andrew, Mark, Frank and I were outside McDonalds, and Frank was sitting on the seat of one of the Kiddie Ride Machines - those that start moving and playing a song when you insert some coins. While he was busy chattering away, I took out 2 20 cent coins and inserted them into the slot... whereupon the machine came to life, blaring - horror - English versions of Chinese New Year songs, and Frank jumped out of the seat. Despite the cajoling of Andrew and I, he refused to sit on the seat. Luckily, Mark rose to the challenge, but when he sat on the seat, the seat refused to continue in its circular motion.

Incidentally, McDonalds' breakfast sucks. It's overpriced, tastes underwhelming, is not filling and has very little variety.

I've got some camp mates hooked on Pringles Salt And Vinegar crisps. Heh heh. In other news, my department just noticed that I roll my socks down, and someone claimed that only Primary School and RJC girls did that, whereupon I corrected him - RJ girls wear Hot Socks!

As everyone knows, entrance to the Island of Doom is procured by letting the barrier machines at the ferry terminal scan the barcode on your Identity Card. However, these machines apparently are too stupid to distinguish between a proper IC number and a normal barcode - I hear someone scanned a Snickers bar, and the gate opened!

My electric toothbrush ran out of juice because the power switch had accidentally been switched on due to a bump, and I hadn't noticed in time, so I was reduced to using my backup manual toothbrush for one night. It's been so long since I last used a manual toothbrush!

Dead Poets' Society was screened at the last Movie Night :) Though I wasn't there to view it, I applaud the change from the usual War Movies (bleah).

I met Kai Leung at the 172 bus stop one night. He's at Lim Chu Kang camp 1. Yet another soul lost in the wilderness :)

My 855 was passing by MacRitchie, and there was a Cross-Country event going on. A few were running, but most were walking lazily :) Some boys were in their school uniform, and one had the front of his unbuttoned :0

Later, while I was taking the lift back to my unit, there was a boy of about Upper Primary level asking his maid what the outfit I was wearing was called. His maid suggested that he ask me, and ask me he did, and I replied that it was an Army Uniform. After exiting the lift, he was querying his maid further on details about the Army, no doubt having been well indoctrinated during Moral Education classes about "dulce et decorum est pro patria mori" [Ed: Yes, this phrase is grossly over-used. So sue me.], and I was inclined to tell him, mournfully, that his turn would come in 10 years or so when he would be enslaved for the putative Greater Good of the Fatherland [Ed: There is a reason why I didn't use "Motherland". Ahem], but I decided to be nice and let him enjoy his childhood without being tormented in his restless sleep by nightmares ending in his waking up with a jolt in cold sweat, screaming his lungs out for fear for his life, his freedom, his dignity and his sanity.

Thoughts on Books:

A Life Worth Reliving by Victor Seah Tiong Hin

Like most writers reminiscing nostalgically, the author falls into the trap of romanticising Old Singapore and some of the time, especially in recounting his childhood, he presents a sanitised image of the Old Singapore. As I always maintain, it's all very well and good to have a bowl of noodles costing a cent, but not when you earn 10 cents a month and the noodles have cockroaches floating around in them.

More pedantically, the language used is rather stilted and halting. Sentence connectors aren't used very much, with the result being that sentences are very short and end abruptly. Also, the amount of errors in the manuscript seems to be above the average for published books, perhaps a sign of inadequate editing. In various places, the author inserts odd interjections - praise for the PAP Government's various social engineering projects, tiresome and puzzling moralising and choice National Education ideas and concepts.

Nevertheless, I learnt quite a few things. Like why Jesudason was the Headmaster of Raffles Institution for such a short time - something Wijeysingha doesn't write about in The Eagle Breeds A Gryphon. Or maybe I missed that part because the book was too boring. (Aside: I wonder if they're still making hapless Sec 1 students buy it, and how much in royalties he's earnt so far)

Ray Bradbury - The Illustrated Man

This book was first published in 1952, and it shows. Most of the short stories in the book are rather pessimistic, and their themes and content are very much a reflection of that era - censorship, space, faith, nuclear holocaust, extra-terrestrial life, technology, its running amok, over-reliance on it, its unintended consequences and the like.

I'm rather upset with the whole premise of the "Illustrated Man". It's all nothing more than a cheapskate framework for Bradbury to tell his short stories. Hell - he could do away with the whole Illustrated Man jazz and do an equally good, if not better job. If he'd developed the whole idea of the Illustrated Man further, there would've been a lot of potential, but as it is it is an unresolved element in the book.

Excerpt from the blurb on the back of the Heinemann New Mindmills edition: "But the illustrated man would like to burn off his illustrations. For in the dark each illustration quivers and comes to life. And each illustration gives us a chilling picture of the future and a disturbing glimpse into the minds of those who live there..."

I actually got pissed off enough by the incessantly annoying announcements at MRT stations that I sketched a draft of a letter to be submitted to the Straits Times Forum, which actively encourages a Civil Society by publishing mostly letters "dedicated to trivial chicken shit issues", rejecting potentially contentious ones of more import (See Example) and censoring and editing some letters that do get through (Example from Streats). However, with the passage of time, my apathy has overcome me, and so I shall withold sending in the letter, which would (rightly) make me look like one of those idiots who complain about relatively inconsequential things with an unearthly fervour. At least until I am unfortunate to face the barrage of announcements at Boon Lay MRT Station that prompted my original decision.

For my easy reference (and possibly, the amusement of some of you), here are some of the points of my putative letter:

- I was subjected to the message, "May we have your attention please. The train that is approaching Platform A is not for passenger service. Please do not board it. Thank you" 6 times, and as if that wasn't enough, I had to endure the message, "May we have your attention please. The train that is approaching Platform A is not for passenger service. Please do not board it. Please wait for the next available train. Thank you" 4 times. By the time the last message played, I was contemplating the relative merits of hurling myself onto the track to be electrocuted to a crisp or jumping in front of the train to be smashed to a pulp
- The woman featured in the recorded announcements manages to find a most ingratiating and unctous tone of voice to make them in
- Even with the wealth of LCD displays, SMRT feels compelled to play a message telling us which station the trains at Platform A on the East-West line are heading to. Other countries get by with massively more complex train systems and noticeably fewer announcements
- Sometimes, less is more. Fewer announcements = happier passengers. If, after the announcement is played 2-3 times, the person still boards the wrong train, he deserves it and playing the announcements isn't likely to make a difference
- Some platitudes and praise to make my letter fairer, and to soften its impact

I was also thinking of complaining about the "Circle" line's name and the confusion of the Red line going both North and South, but I think that would be too tiresome and would make the letter unfocused.

To He Who Must Not Be Named:

I think almost all sane people (I don't know about you) would consider North Korea to be a country with more paradoxes and contradictions than, say, the USA. North Korea is supposed to be a Communist state, where there is the dictatorship of the proletariat. However, individual people have almost NO say over the running of the country, and the proletariat is oppressed and is reduced to scavenging for bark to boil into bitter and possibly poisonous soups while soldiers and The Dear Leader (did I get his title correct?) eat Premium Buckwheat Noodles.

However, across the Pacific Ocean, we find a country which espouses free trade, but has an elaborate and Byzantine system of anti-dumping and "fair trade" laws, coupled with the practice of generously doling out lots of pork for constituents. Incumbents stay in office, by and large, thanks to bizzare gerrymandering. And so on.

With apologies to you, I can say that, "In each state, we can find numerous, shitloads of inconsistencie and absurdities and cruelties. To the point where it's impossible to quantify which has 'more'."

I trust that this example will be enough for you to comprehend my point. So, I ask, wherefore argue anything if nothing can be quantified? Most people can be said to refuse even to debate on "obvious" issues because they (to paraphrase), "feel that, intuitively, (let's face it, it's pure intuition, that their way of life, their way of doing things, their beliefs al, are superior to others'."

halal meat unethical - My sister showed me an extreme right wing publication that accused the Blair government of being hypocritical for trying to ban fox hunting because animals slaughtered the Halal way aren't stunned before having their throats cut, being hung upside down and bleeding to death. To put it another, way, "A chap says some kind prayer and then the cow's throat is slit, while fully conscious, and it bleeds to death. It may be a full three minutes before the heart pumps its last." Some research is actually rather enlightening:

http://www.warmwell.com/dec23bryn.html

"In a 22-page booklet on farm animal welfare, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals described shechitah, the kosher method of slaughter -- as well as halal, the Islamic code of animal slaughter -- as painful and distressing to animals. "It is a fundamental right of religious groups to practice their beliefs without hindrance," the booklet stated. "But where those beliefs are directly responsible for animal suffering, that right has to be challenged." "Surely it is not unreasonable to suggest that, in the light of new scientific knowledge and society's more caring attitudes to animals, religious traditions might be changed," it added. "

On the other hand, Muslim sources claim that the Halal butchers slit the veins in a way such that they bleed to death quickly. They don't say anything about stunning the animal, though. I'm not an authority on this issue, but I still think it would be more humane to stun the animal first or even just behead it. And the reason why Sikhs don't eat Halal meat: "Mind you some cultures/ religion do not eat meat that is halal e.g. Sikhism they believe in "Jhatka" cut meat, i.e. straight cut with minimal torture to the animal e.g. not slow release bleeding to death and some Sikhs I have seen refuse halal meat even in Malaysia.". Yet another reason to try to eat non-Halal meat, then.

To end off, a thought offered by someone: "Arguing over which methods of killing are more humane seems a bit pointless since the only ones who could tell you are dead." Heh.

The Problem With Paypal

On racial profiling:

Security researcher Robert Ferrell:

"Applying the most stringent security measures without regard to the likelihood of criminal intent is both ludicrous and monstrously inefficient. 80-year-old women from Dubuque do not hijack aircraft. 20-year-old Pakistani males with questionable passports do hijack aircraft. It's really not a complex equation to factor."

Lifted from the Melody for Tomorrow:

Just got this email from an acquaintance at church.

A prominent American's daughter was interviewed on the Early Show and Jane Clayson asked her "How could God let something like this happen?"
(Regarding the attacks on September 11)

Anne Graham gave an extremely profound and insightful response. She said, "I believe God is deeply saddened by this, just as we are, but for years we've been telling God to get out of our schools, to get out of our government and to get out of our lives. And being the gentleman He is,I believe He has calmly backed out. How can we expect God to give us His blessing and His protection if we demand He leave us alone?"

In light of recent events...terrorists attack, school shootings, etc, I think it started when Madeleine Murray O'Hare (she was murdered, her body found recently) complained she didn't want prayer in our schools, and we said OK. Then someone said you better not read the Bible in school...the Bible says thou shalt not kill, thou shalt not steal, and love your neighbor as yourself.
And we said OK.

Then Dr. Benjamin Spock said we shouldn't spank our children when they misbehave because their little personalities would be warped and we might damage their self-esteem (Dr. Spock's son committed suicide). We said an expert should know what he's talking about.
And we said OK.

Then someone said teachers and principals better not discipline our children when they misbehave. The school administrators said no faculty member in this school better touch a student when they misbehave because we don't want any bad publicity, and we surely don't want to be sued (there's a big difference between disciplining, touching, beating, smacking, humiliating, kicking, etc.)
And we said OK.

Then someone said, let's let our daughters have abortions if they want, and they won't even have to tell their parents. And we said OK.

Then some wise school board member said, since boys will be boys and they're going to do it anyway, let's give our sons all the condoms they want so they can have all the fun they desire, and we won't have to tell their parents they got them at school.
And we said OK.

Then some of our top elected officials said it doesn't matter what we do in private as long as we do our jobs. Agreeing with them, we said it doesn't matter to me what anyone, including the President, does in private as long as I have a job and the economy is good.

Then someone said let's print magazines with pictures of nude women and call it wholesome, down-to-earth appreciation for the beauty of the female body.
And we said OK.

And then someone else took that appreciation a step further and published pictures of nude children and then further again by making them available on the Internet.
And we said OK, they're entitled to free speech.

Then the entertainment industry said, let's make TV shows and movies that promote profanity, violence, and illicit sex. Let's record music that encourages rape, drugs, murder, suicide, and satanic themes. And we said it's just entertainment, it has no adverse effect, nobody takes it seriously anyway, so go right ahead.

Now we're asking ourselves why our children have no conscience, why they don't know right from wrong, and why it doesn't bother them to kill strangers, their classmates, and themselves.

yaddah yaddah yaddah why is discussion of God suppressed in the workplace, but crude jokes pass through so freely etcetcetc...are you thinking? [end of email]

Yes, that got me thinking. The first thing that popped into my mind was "What does this have to do with September 11? America didn't bomb herself...[relevance: 0 marks]". Sorry about the cynical attitude, but it happened, and I couldn't do anything about it.

And then I asked, "what does God have to do with all of this? Terrorists bombed the US, the epitome of democracy, and Jane Clayson blames it on God? The non-Christians out there would probably laugh this off." But the email is right. If you removed all the religious undertones America probably doesn't deserve the September 11 event, but it certainly deserves the moral degradation it is facing today.

Though the way Anne Graham describes it is totally out of whack. She makes it sound like we're all rejecting God. In fact American democracy is just trying to ensure that the non-Christians don't get their right to freedom from preaching trampled upon. And also a rather lame attempt to impose religious equality - i.e. to show that they're not favouring any one religion.

And the part about spanking just made me laugh really really hard. People don't spank their kids not because this Dr. Spock (get Star Trek out of your mind please) said it's not good, they don't do it because it is now possible for one to be sued for child abuse. Dr. Spock probably had nuts to play in such a development.

I could go on, but I think I'd better just summarise the rest of what I'd say. America's moral values are degenerating, not because they rejected God (is Anne Graham claiming that the Muslims and other religions/cultures are inferior because they reject God too?), but because this new craze about democracy has made people uphold their newfound rights to do everything imaginable (and unimaginable) under the sun, just be cause they can. And in the process, trample all over the values their ancestors worked so hard to build up.

The Christian point of view would be so much more credible if they wouldn't use that "God stepped aside because we asked him to so it's our fault" line to justify everything they preach or to explain all the disasters that happen. Because in doing so they are in fact blaming these disasters on God - September 11 happened because God didn't prevent it from happening. Oh pul-leez. God doesn't kill people, terrorists kill people.

Don't get me wrong. I do believe in the existence of a God. It's just that at a certain phase on my life something happened that made me wake up and realise that linking everything to God is just plain stupid, because there is stuff that is a direct consequence of our own actions.

How would you feel if someone claimed you caused the death of your 2 fighting fish because they were in the same water tank and you did nothing to prevent them from fighting? And thus witness the logically flawed reasoning of the Christian faith. (yes, yes, the "your ways/thoughts are not those of God, but those of Man" argument. I know that too) If they'll actually bother to inject some form of logic into their preaching I think they'll be more successful in their evangelising.

I see the flaws in the logic too. Following this logic, before the Americans "asked him... to get out of [their] lives", they had his blessing and protection. Anne Graham hearkens back to the halcyon days of the 50s, I assume. However, even in those times, America wasn't spared the depredations of world and domestic events.

I admit some people are over-zealous in separating Church from State in the USA, but equally, many are keen to integrate the two. Freedom of Religion also means Freedom -from- Religion. I just read a story in This Is True (Premium) that really pissed me off. A student in Union, Tennessee, India Tracy, has just filed a lawsuit against her school because, among other things:

- She was repeatedly called "Satan worshipper," "witch" and other derogatory names. She was accused of eating babies and of being a lesbian because she wasn't a Christian
- She was forced to attend regular Bible study classes during the school day, and urged to lead the school and her class in prayer.
- Derogatory names were written on her locker in permanent ink and the school refused to paint over the graffiti or move her locker.
- She was repeatedly attacked as she knelt in front of her bottom-row locker. Her head was bashed at least 10 times, cutting her lip, above her eyes and bloodying her nose.
- A teacher told her to "keep quiet because you'll get in trouble" after she wrote a paper about religious freedom.

Like Kureshi, I don't see what Dr Spock, parenting and a lot of other things Anne Graham mentioned have to do with God too. I don't agree with many of her points too, but that's another story for another day.

Up to 10 million people around the world marched in protest of a war against Iraq today.

Meanwhile, in Singapore, 6 people protested in front of the American Embassy in Napier Road but were stopped by the police before they could even wave their placards, and taken to Tanglin Police Station for questioning.

Evidently they had no permit. Maybe they'll be charged for Unlawful Assembly. Whee.

'I feel embarrassed that while people around the world are making a statement about peace, Singaporeans are sitting back and munching peanuts in front of their TV sets.' - Mr Latiff, an Engineer, 33

Maybe it's because protests (without a permit, of course) are illegal here, no?

The whole thing about the war on Saddam is that while it is good in principle, realpolitik butts in (as always), to complicate matters.

I think most people would agree that Saddam is bad. Most Iraqis hate him, and definitely all Kurds. Hell, even his fellow Arabs dislike him. Maybe only Osama gives him moral support (thus providing solid 'evidence' of a link between Saddam and Al-Qaeda).

Saddam is evil. He's the bully of Baghdad. - Yortsin.

But then, where do you draw the line? Let's invade Ma-laysia because PAS will one day invade Singapore! Oh gee.

This issue has been discussed endless to death. Isn't everyone sick and tired of hearing the same old points dragged out again and again? Neither faction is going to convince the other side, now that both sides have become so polarised.

I left my computer on overnight to let Spinrite work its magic on one of my hard disks, and put a Channel NewsAsia Post-it note on the main power switch reminding my mother not to turn it off, and she did so anyway. I hope no damage was done. Maybe I should plaster notes all over the room next time. After so long, she still can't get it into her head that whenever I leave it on, it's on for a purpose.

On a larger scale, it's just part of her compulsive obsessive disorder, which also involves her turning off all heaters when she sees them (even if they've only been on for 2 minutes), and yelling that the water is boiling when it's not even tepid, opening all doors when there's a reason why they are shut, and then securing them open with bicycle hooks or reused underwear bands and sweeping/mopping floors 5 times a day, locking the main door with 2 separate locks and many more which my sister could probably expound on at length much more fluently than I could.
Being attached to Nee Soon range to do fatigue for SAFISAM (Singapore Armed Forces Individual
Small Arms Meet) was fun. For one, it was stayout. Also, taking the 855 in the morning with all the schoolgoers was refreshing - something I haven't done since the first half of 2000. In addition, doing saikang once in a while - carpentry, hammering nails, doing decor and the like - breaks the monotony of my routine. Though I'm not very good at it.

One OOC from Guards was complaining to me and the other 42SAR attached personnel that he had been there for a week and was bored already, but was attached till November. :0 Good luck to him.

I saw a picture of one of those classes conducted by the Thais to help women enhance their busts naturally. In it, the women are, erm, squeezing their breasts. It looks damn funny.

Thai push to beat breast jobs

BANGKOK - Thai public health officials are pushing bust exercises as an alternative to silicone implants and cosmetic surgery for women.

The Health Ministry is training a team to perform the workouts - a combination of aerobic moves and traditional Thai exercise - which will be taught to the public, the Bangkok Post reported.

During the two-day course, the women practise the moves, have a traditional Thai massage and end with a bracing splash of cold water on their chests.

Dr Pennapha Subcharoen, Deputy Director General of the Institute for Development of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine, which is conducting the training, said the women also learn how to detect signs of breast cancer.

'We're trying to promote this exercise so that Thai women who have small and floppy breasts do not have to undergo unnecessary treatment,' he said.

Here's to edging all those bust enhancement companies out of business!

93.3 FM keeps playing a desecrated Chinese version of "On My Own". Ack. At least it's not as bad as the Chinese version of the Ketchup Song...

Learning from the Europeans, the folks at Channel 5 have started their version of Interactive TV. During American Idol, there was this service by which you could SMS them messages about the show and it'd appear at the bottom of the screen... Except that most people were sending Valentine's Day greetings. I was reading them rather indulgently on TV Mobile on the 65, and would've sent something about Wo-Hen Nankan, like "Tuan Anh rulez!!!" but by the time I composed a message, I'd reached my stop.

I had the misfortune of standing behind 3 SRJC girls on the MRT today. They smelt worse than the PJ girls of yesteryear, and to make matters worse, their inane and senseless giggling and nothing in particular (a gender defect, I maintain) would've put Zixuan to shame.

Melvin somehow got Dengue Fever - must be an allergic reaction to 1SIR - so some of us went to visit him. He was a little weak, but still robust enough to unleash his usual double entendres. Meanwhile 'Chew' was feeling touchy, exploding at the mention of the word "Valentine's" or the sight of flowers and chocolates. Well, Andrew and I don't have dates either, so. :)

Re: Class of 1999 GEPpers Gathering centred around Rosie Smith - Why is it when people who, at a point in the past shared some denominator meet up, they tend to spend most of their time reminiscing about the past? Most of the time was spent talking about adventures in the Age of Innocence. Right.

The Other News

It seems someone has been cataloguing and posting all the weird stories that come out in the Straits Times and the New Paper which relate to sex (well, most of them) and Singapore. How cute. We can rival Ma-laysia now!

Among them:

- the 15 year old boy who, in 2000, died from auto-erotic asphyxiation while clad in shorts and his sister's sports bra (a search for that, after discussing with someone the possibility of accidentally commiting suicide by playing with a gun) was what led me to find the page in the first place)
- the police finding 1,200 blue tapes... in the police quarters at Pearl's Hill Terrace
- A US doctor advocating male genital mutilation for all male babies
- Parents sending Private Investigators to spy on their children

A poem a senior of mine wrote:

"The second poem is the distillation of my love of my national service experience."

Soldier

And if I ever go to war
I'll kill my bloody enemies
My bloody fucking enemies
Are those that try to get me killed

And first and foremost in their rank
Are those that send me out to die
And first and foremost of that scum are those above me high in rank

The men of bars, the men of stars
The old men ruling by the vote
For love of country scream for death
My death my death my death my death

I'll rend their guts and flay their bones
No matter which side they are on
My bloody fucking enemies
Are those that try to get me killed
Word of the day: "voluptuary" (see also: sybarite)

It's been a while, but I got stomach cramps again - this time from doing 150 crunches after a morning run (well, it was a walk for me). And they lasted 3 days. Ouch. I think even Mr Poon isn't quite so brutal!

Sometimes, I wonder what went wrong between me and one of my colleagues. I'm sure he's a nice person in his own way, but what event(s) caused him to dislike me so much? Maybe he doesn't like to see people "slacking" when he sees himself working so hard. Well, I am not as slack as I appear, though I *do* admit my job is rather easier than some's *g* It's probably a summation of many small things. The straw that breaks the camel's back. As always. Now, where have we heard that before? :) I also wonder occasionally who else dislikes me but is less open about their loathing. Hmm.

I finally went to confront the barber, and he wasn't happy. He admitted, in a roundabout way, that we didn't have to pay him another $2 when we actually got out hair cut, but dismissed his ongoing con job with the words (in chinese), "Some people who want to give me more, so I let them. Sit down!" and proceeded to cut my hair extremely quickly and shoddily, taking 1/3 the time he took on the person before me (though oddly it was, actually, better than the second time I'd gone to him and had paid him $2, when Jason remarked that I looked like a Dragonball Z character.)

As he predicted, Qingru has been posted to my unit. And he's been forced to cut his hair to a ridiculous length. Heh heh heh. Apparently he also hasn't applied overseas, though he intends to. At my rate, I think in the end I just won't bother.

There was a stray dog running around when we were running at East Coast (I love my battalion - we rarely stay in camp on Saturdays. I can probably count on 4 fingers the number of Saturdays I've spent in camp since late June) - well, it wasn't really a stray dog. It was tame, well groomed, didn't bite and had a collar. Anyway, a "captain" security guard was trying to slip a noose around its neck (too lowly a job for the "generals" I suppose) but it kept eluding him, even up till the time I left. I wonder why stray dogs are frowned upon, but people let stray cats wander with abandon? :(

I'm at the History section of Fast Food Nation at this point in time. I finally get to find out about the stupid "Colonel" Harland Sanders! Alas, he *was* a real person, though somewhat of a kook.

"This kind of reminds me of the time back in Primary 6, when we looked at the black gunk and pus oozing out of our newly-formed BCG scar, and we offered some of it to Peggy and made her cry. Sometimes I don't see how I've changed at all in the last 8 years."

John Philip Thompson, former chairman and CEO of The Southland Corporation, now 7-Eleven, Inc., died Jan. 28, 2003, at age 77 of brain cancer... During his tenure, the company introduced the Slurpee, launching the frozen carbonated beverage (FCB) category in 1967. Fresh-brewed coffee-to-go was first offered in 1964, and the Big Gulp soft drink was launched in 1980.

7-Eleven was originally named for its operating hours: 7:00 am to 11:00 pm.

Short notes before nipping off to meet The Great One at Westmall:

Just finished The Shadow of a Shadow of a Dream by Catherine Lim today. Interestingly, it was first published in 1987, and republished in 1999 - the same year after she won the "1999 South East Asia Write (sic) Award".

Catherine Lim is perhaps the most touted of local writers, but "Local Flavour" isn't really much of a draw for me and I am not all that fond of her style. It is rather readable, but not overly exciting ; I did not get the "one more page syndrome" while reading this book. Perhaps that is the point, though - to convey images in an understated way. Many of the stories don't end satisfactorily or conclusively, and there is something missing ; the reader is left hanging. Perhaps that, again, is the point.

There are subtle anti-government jibes here and there, and the SDU and the "problem" of graduate women not marrying is mocked. The sardonic way government officials spokesmen are quoted and what they say is really amusing. Heh heh.

Also read: Iron Man, by Neivelle Tan. A rather typical story of redemption.

It seems I've a fanclub, of sorts:

"hey. i. went. to. your. homepage. and. i. love. it. so. much. i. have. shivers. brr. rrr. rrh. But after 1/2 hour in there (WHAT?! I only have 6 days of freedom!!) i suddenly panicked and left. What's going on?! Are you Tim AND Gabriel? Why do you share the same blog? If Agagooga is Gabriel and the Associate is Tim, doesn't that make me a confused reader? (yes it does) So is Balderdash a joint effort by Tim and Gabriel to overrun the internet? Or is it a covert operation by the AlQaeda to discredit all the English speaking peoples of the world? One suggestion: display a website directory tree that will help your readers orientate themselves so they won't fall off their chairs and sanities. OR just take the damned site down (no chance of that i bet). It distresses average denizens of the web like me.

Anyway, from what I gathered during my random lunges and gropes during the 1/2 hour i spent *there* we have a lot in common. Tim (perhaps just one of the many mainfestations of deity agagooga, or the Associate. or Osama) likes gamebooks, is catholic, and came from tc(cat)hs. JUST LIKE ME! Gabriel... well he thinks the world of himself. and I think a world of gabriels would be a mighty fine thing indeed. for dying painfully in.

Amazing how much effort it took to write that last paragraph. I had a few ideas going on in my head but it came out like burning demon from a human cervix. IE it hurt. Writing is an awfully painful thing if people are watching. Watching to see if you fall down painfully on your face with a grammatical error or a word speld incorekly. Anyway. I think that anyway is a good word for pulling yourself out from an embarassing loss of focus in a conversation. So... ANY-WAY.

I'm sure I had something worthy to write about but I lost it. Perhaps I just wanted to convey excitement about finding personalities that were cloned from mine on the web. Yes. Tim and Gabriel were cloned from my genes. They are also a year older than me. PS I love Lonewolf. but I only have 5 books. I like the whole Stornlands idea, a fertile plain torn apart by relentless civil wars and petty ambition and crawling with humanoids and talking rats. In fact, I think that the whole Stornlands thing is very similar to "the Empire" in Gamesworkshop's own universe. I think they just copied each other back in the 70s and 80s. If you understood what I was talking about then we must be soul mates. Or twins separated at birth. Stab yourself now and I'll post if i feel pain.

Anyway.

why was I even typing this. anyway.

*hello whats your name I actually have to time to talk gtg.*

Oh yeah. I'm sorry to hear you went to RJC. The whole Raffles thing sucks doesn't it. The name of the school itself inspires images of girlie guides selling ticket-things. Me? I'm from High Class JC, just like the owner of this board, so don't try to retaliate with a post with more wit and subtle malice aimed at my school and discreetly glorifying yours. I HATE RJ. DIE!!!!"

And someone else:

"Cuz seriously, everybody knows that the JC to be in is ACJC. Naha.

And agagooga's obsession with RGS scares me quite a bit. That girl's picture with the eyes blanked out with the black rectangle? I knew her. We were in the same CCA.

And frankly, someone who has that much time to actually scan in the whole damn RGS yearbook has got to have quite a sad life.

That being said, the rest of the site is actually rather entertaining."

1. Why do you blog?
I try to record the ephemeral threads of my life (those not too private for my diary), some to share with friends who visit and some just for fun, so I can look back years later and laugh (or grimace). Mostly, it's because I'm bored lah.

2. What do you blog about? Why?
Anything and everything. Life, the Universe and Everything (the third best of the quintet, really). Cliched, but true. Anything that catches my fancy or piques my interest.

3. Who is your primary blogging audience? Why?
Friends. And people who search for "zaogeng" or "nude mgs girls" :P

4. What is your blogging philosophy? Why?
Anything goes. Let loose. Join in the fun or be dazed by the inanity of it all. I'm already in enough trouble, so this makes little difference :)

5. Have you ever stopped blogging or considered ending your blog? Why? What happened?
Oh lotsa times. Things I write were misinterpreted or used against me, contrary to the spirit in which they were written *shrug* Been there, done that. I will survive. Tralala.

"rgs yearbook 2002" - Don't have it, never seen it, not going to scan it. Too bad.
http://www3.sympatico.ca/ross.fraser/islam.htm - Interesting, if long. Few would have the stamina and interest to finish it. Even I have taken a few sessions to get to where am I, around 80% down the page.

Interesting material on surrogacy, male dominance and the ramifications of Allah being a male.

"The more a society divests women of social power, the more a surrogate submission seems to transform a potentially powerful man into a powerless virtual woman. Since God is conceived in such societies as male and powerful, and as identifying with men and their power, such a crushing of a man's masculinity seems virtually to be an attack on God. Hence reactions like the hadith "whenever a male mounts another male, the throne of God trembles.""
Now on my cupboard: Printouts of the demotivational posters for Stupidity, Mistakes, Defeat and Procrastination. Yeh!

I put my Pokka Mango Tea in the freezer and after a while it began to taste of Mutton. Argh.

"Chew Huijun. Ontario, Canada" wrote in to the forum on being retained in JC. Apparently she got lots of notice from this, her second letter. It was rather well written, really.

I wonder why, since the RI days, people have liked to touch my stomach. I asked a few of them and some of them claim that it's for "good luck". Bah. Furthermore, from my observations and enquiries, I've found that other fat people don't get their stomachs fondled as much as mine is - indeed, their tums are not molested at all. I wonder if I should be flattered by the attention. In a semi-related issue, it seems much of my company thinks that I am... cute, especially some clerks and drivers. I am rather incredulous at the attention.

The sadistic SMRT people have outdone themselves! This time they played, "The train at Platform A is not for passenger service. Please do not board it. Thank You" (all said in an insincere voice) 4 times, 3 of them without pause. I wouldn't be surprised to hear of cases of "train rage" sometime soon.

The horror that is Chingay is here! In recent years, it has mutated horribly until most parts of it would be unrecognisable to its original organisers. Supposedly, it's meant to be just a street parade, but some of the items included in it are very odd. I still remember 1998, when the Chingay Parade featured Santa Claus on his float, as well as the Disneyfest team.

Bust enhancement ads, promising increased self-confidence and affection from your spouse, continue to crowd the pages of the Straits Times. I wonder if penile enhancement ads are illegal - I never see any!

There was this really freaky trailer which featured a row of old women (at least in their 50s) prancing about in CHIJ uniforms. AHHHH!

Seen on Ripley's Believe It Or Not:
- A couple which keeps 9 pigs at home. I'd like to keep one pig, but nine?
- A guy who can throw playing cards a distance of 210 feet, and threw one into a watermelon, where it was embedded. So Cool's flying cards in A Conman In Tokyo aren't entirely a flight of fancy!

Amusing news:
- Apparently Tung Chee Hwa was told to play Simcity4 to learn how to manage an economy.

After duty, I went back to RJ to have a look.

Very few J4s were there - I saw Paradox and Christopher Lim and one or two others, but that was about all. There were more J3s of course. The baseball caps some of the guys wore look really daft - it draws more attention to their baldness.

The theory of RJ people still holds true. Especially for Raffles Guys. The yearly trend is not being reversed. I shudder to think of the situation in 10 years time.

My RJ bears, courtesy of Screwed Up Girl, are quite nice. They're slightly different from the prototypes that I saw last year, but overall the reproduction of the uniforms is quite faithful. Even the purple colour, though it's been toned down a little.

Probably to "promote racial harmony", there were Indian and Malay dance items too this year. Intriguing, if irrelevant. The Japanese club made an appearance, of course. They finally have a male member!

Crystal informed me that the ban on Hot Socks has been lifted. Hoorah for Ankle Socks. Everyone must be very happy now (including her). And perhaps taking after Killer, she had a band (friendship band?) on one of her ankles. I *must* get down to finding out what those bands are for.

I saw more tudungs. I don't recall seeing any last year.

I don't celebrate people's birthdays unless they're in August. I make an exception for my girlfriend.
More disturbing books: Planet Earth 2000 AD by Hal Lindsey.

This book is one in a long line of publications authored by a Right Wing Christian Fundamentalist. It is very biased and one sided, and reads like a bible of the Militant Right. Even a cursory browse through the pages would make the browser think that the author was deluded, had a persecution complex, and was an avid conspiracy theorist, justifying his far out predictions with selective and creative interpretation of Biblical text. Several blurbs on the back cover of the book praise the book, but they are not accredited to anyone. Perhaps they are quotes from Hal Linsey himself, praising his book.

The author deals with many issues. Among them is the state of Israel. He views it as the centre of the world and asks how Israel could survive the relentless barrage of Arab attacks besides divine intervention. He neglects to mention that Israel receives a large share of America's foreign aid, indeed it is the largest single recipient, thanks to the efforts of the Jewish lobby, and the disunity among the Arab nations that prevents them from forming a united and cohesive front against Israel.

The book laments the secularisation of the USA when in fact there is much evidence that the reverse is happening. The spirit of the 60s is attributed to demonic inspiration. The campaign against nuclear weapons is alleged to be bankrolled by communists. The Second Coming is proclaimed to be at nigh. I don't know about that, but such has been trumpeted many times before, all to no end.

Demonised are many groups. Among them, Communists, Muslims, Humanists, European integrationists, Liberals, non-fundamentalist Christians, and the left in general. Perhaps the only group free of sin are the Right Wing Fundamentalist Christians. What a coincidence. Satanism is equated with the rise in secularism, relativism, humanism and New Age Philosophies, so maybe in the future all of us will become satanists. With selective examples, the author makes his case that Christians are being persecuted, but he says nothing about how radical Christians are persecuting Muslims, supporters of abortion, multilateralists and more.

People trying to make the world a better place by raising the public's self-esteem and its ability to solve conflict (now how is that an unworthy cause?) are criticised, as are shows of religious tolerance, consisting merely of representatives of different religions gathering peaceably. Somehow, the United Nations is transformed into a World Government, promoting New Age religions. Boutros Boutros-Ghali is proclaimed to be the most powerful man on the planet (in 1996), and the US is 'pliant' to the UN. I believe any casual observer would be able to see that the UN Secretary-General has little power compared to the President of the United States, and if anything, it is the US that bullies the UN by refusing to pay its dues, imposing all sorts of conditions on it, stomping out of UN bodies like a petulant child, manipulating the Security Council and more. Hal Lindsey is upset that US soldiers are placed under foreign commanders in UN operations, but he conveniently neglects to mention how soldiers from other countries were under US command in Korea and the first Gulf War.

Many of Hal Lindsey's far out conspiracy theories are putatively proven and corroborated, not only with selective and creative interpretation of Scripture, but by way of his unnamed "primary intelligence sources", which are constantly referred to but never described in any but the vaguest of terms, and which know of some very unbelievable things, like Rafsanjani's proclaiming that Muslims want to take over the world.

Other conspiracy or far fetched theories:
- The world is moving towards a global government
- The EU is going to become a super-state and the Anti-Christ will head it
- The World Bank forces sterilisation and abortion
- UFOs are demons
- Holding land privately (as opposed to publicly) is good for the environment because it lowers the occurence of deforestation. The effects of logging and clearing the forests for agricultural or industrial use are conveniently ignored. He claims that the Bald Eagle is endangered because it lives on lands protected by the government. I can't believe even he can believe that this argument holds any water.

There are many more lies, half-truths, misleading arguments and distortions in his book, but to tackle all of them would take the whole day. He seems to be turning a religion of Love into one of Hate.

I wonder if he's been eating Magic Mushrooms.
Before I myself get down to slamming his right wing, Christian fundamentalist lies myself:

Hal Lindsey (b. 1929) The Father of Apocalyptic Christian Zionism

"His popularity may also in part, however, have to do with his tendency to revise those predictions in the light of changing world events. So for example The Final Battle (1994) is essentially an unacknowledged rewrite of the 'Late Great Planet Earth' (1970); 'Apocalypse Code' (1997) is a rewrite of 'There's a New World Coming' (1973); and 'Planet Earth 2000 A.D.' (1994, & 1996) are both revisions of 'The 1980's Countdown to Armageddon' (1980). Planet Earth: The Final Chapter (1998) is, the latest version in the 'Planet Earth' series.

A good example of Lindsey's prophetic revisions concerns the future of the United States. In Planet Earth 2000 A.D. Lindsey specifically draws attention to a prophecy made in The Late Great Planet Earth as evidence of his prophetic accuracy. A comparison, however, shows that he has edited out the prediction of communist subversion which did not occur.

Without access to all Lindsey's books one would not necessarily be aware that he has adapted his material to fit the changing world since he rarely acknowledges his sources or uses footnotes. The Introduction to two of his books serves as a good example. Reading Planet Earth 2000 A.D. (1994), one is led to believe this, and not 1980's Countdown to Armageddon (1981), was the long awaited sequel to The Late Great Planet Earth (1970).

Lindsey also makes use of previously published material in his later books. Unattributed paragraphs and sentences from earlier works reappear with regularity. So for example, in two unrelated books, published just a year apart, the same sentences are repeated.

Like a sinking ship, Lindsey portrays a world in which there is no hope or purpose, other than trying to get off as quickly as possible. There is therefore no point in trying to care for the world or getting involved in charitable or humanitarian work. Every human tragedy, be it earthquake, hurricane or war merely adds to the mounting evidence and proves his contention that the end of the world is nigh.

Throughout his books, but increasingly in the latter editions, Lindsey denigrates Arabs generally and Palestinians, in particular. He appears to show little understanding or compassion for their plight. Instead he offers a novel reinterpretation of the events of 1948.

... for thirty years, making detailed predictions about this 'someone', supposedly alive today, Lindsey is still unable to identify the anti-Christ.

Lindsey's particular kind of reading of history, coloured by a literal exegesis of highly selective biblical scriptures, is essentially polarised, dualistic, racist and confrontational. He justifies the continued demonisation of Russia, China, Islam and the Arab nations; he encourages the continued military and economic funding of Israel by the United States; he urges Israelis to resist negotiating land for peace and instead, maintain their apartheid policies, settling and incorporating the Occupied Territories within the State of Israel; and he incites fundamentalist groups committed to destroying the Dome of the Rock and rebuilding the Jewish Temple. In so doing Lindsey identifies unconditionally with the political as well as religious far right both in the United States as well as in Israel. Ironically, as the 'father' of 'armageddon theology' his attempts to defend Israel and to refute anti-Semitism may actually be leading to the very holocaust he abhors but repeatedly predicts."

Hal Lindsey’s Prophetic Jigsaw Puzzle: Five Predictions that Failed!

Hal Lindsey’s books on end-time prophecies are selling by the millions at a rate usually associated with hamburgers. His jigsaw puzzle approach turns Biblical prophecies into a crystal ball through which he predicts with astonishing boldness the precise pattern of events which were supposed to occur by the end of the 1980s - the time when the present history of this world was supposed to end.

Maybe I'll move on to Hindu fundamentalists next!

Hmm http://www.pyxz.com/ seems to be the only non-severely-crippled free image hosting site left.

The interface is irritating, though possibly powerful and they rename my files with weird numbers. Its 25 files limit is not bad though.

Haha Tim is so amusing. Since he's learning Malay, he decided to show me these sites:

Drill commands:

ACS page

Bedok Town Secondary School page

Samples:

Sizing command:

"Yang tigi kekanan renda kekiri dalam satu barisan paras

nombor genap satu langka keblakan, gerak

orang yang di sembilang kekenan diam
nombor gangil pu seng kanan
nombor genap pu seng kiri
squad kekanan dan kekiri pu seng

jedikan tiga barisan cepat jalan"

And I finally know how to spell: Untop Di-perrksa Tatang Senjata. And "Lepaskan Sepering" (So that's how Malays spell "spring".

This is so dumb. Why can't we use English?

Too bad there's nothing about masek masek.

Oh, and there's an exam for this kind of stuff. Sample question:

"I'll also like to point out a factual inaccuracy on your site. Chong Yechao did take part in the 8 mile rap battle, and was one of the finalists. However, none of the other finalists were malay. One was Canadia, another chinese and the last guy, indian. Yechao also made a fool of himself (his rap blows / he should have stayed at home yo) but mad props for having the balls to do so infront of a gangster crowd (well uh not really but the ppl up front weren't too happy with his clowning around)."

Apparently Mr Ong was at the Commissioning Parade. Ooh!

Because of the Nike ad (yeah, it's always an ad), the song "Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life" (from Monty Python's Life of Brian) has become quite popular recently, but I wonder if most people know the story behind, and the context in which this song was sung.

Quite amusing, really :)

Review of "Life of Brian":

"Review by Andrew Hicks
2 stars out of 4

I've heard this movie condemned as one of the most blasphemous pieces of Satanic filth ever put on celluloid. I'd say it's just not that funny. When you're taking on the dominant religion of your culture, you'd better have some pretty dynamite material, but that can't be said when the funniest part of the movie has your "chosen one" singing "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life" while being crucified."

Pretty morbid stuff!

Jonathan Land,

If you disturb me again i will use african vodoo agaainst you. You will loose your manhood and may die infact i am looking at you now from a calabash of water and wondering if i should strike you dead but i see a girl an innocent girl, her spirit is strong i will let you pass this time.

Hamza.

Hamza,

You're the funniest fucker in the world. I'd like to see your African Voodoo against my American Technology. I'm a top muckity-muck in the Department Of Defense. I'll have a Smart Bomb in your lap faster than you can play Hot Potato with it. They'll be picking those voodoo pins out of the remnants of your ass right up until the funeral.

So seriously, I'm not a cop or anything:

a) Are you even remotely near Nigeria?
b) How many people do you send emails like this out to, and how many actually fall for it?
c) Why did you keep writing back to me when I was obviously yanking you harder than a wood chipper? I could imagine that you deal with a lot of humorless folks in this line of work, and I might be a breath of fresh air.

Essentially, I'm really curious... how well has this racket worked for you?

According to this site: http://home.rica.net/alphae/419coal/ the scam you're running is actually a major industry in Nigeria, so I guess it's going well.

Girls without panties slip into the groove

By Cheryl Chow
Contributing Writer

January 10, 2003

Take a look around you. Do you see (or not see) how the young women have taken to prancing around the streets of Tokyo braless and pantiless --- and in the privacy of their own homes, buck naked. Or at least according to Spa! (1/14) which can be counted on to maintain the highest journalistic standards of objectivity by accosting nubile maidens and asking them point blank, "Are you wearing any undies?" According to a fashion writer, last summer, three out of ten replied in the negative.

And what's with these dames? Don't they feel any shame? Spa! ferrets out their reasons, however lame. All sorts of benefits were claimed, ranging from boosting creativity to busting the blues.

Take 25-year-old cartoonist Tomoko who wears neither bra nor panty, and regularly spends time naked at home. Ever cool and professional, she'll make statements like, "Yes, the composition here needs to be simplified." But she'll secretly add a tag line, "Yeah, but I ain't wearing panties today." And it gives her an odd sense of pleasure. When she's at a loss for ideas, she knows it's time for her to strip. She swears that it vastly increases her work output. Doesn't it also give her a sense of sexual excitement? asks Spa! Absolutely not, Tomoko scoffs.

But others beg to differ. A 24-year-old likens it to masturbation. "It's thrilling," she titters. "When I go to the convenience store without wearing panties, I get a charge by repeating to myself, 'I'm not wearing panties now, I'm flipping through mags and I'm not wearing panties, I'm getting out change and I'm not wearing panties.'"

Keiko, a 29-year-old, also enjoys the mild sexual titillation. She's been at this for 16 years since high school. Her only regret is that she didn't start -- or rather, stop -- sooner. Today, she goes pantiless to the office twice a week. If she drops something on the floor, she teases the men by bending down so that she almost -- but not quite -- exposes her secret. "It's exciting, my body gets so hot," she trills. She also enjoys taking pictures of herself in the buff. Once she had to report to the office on a Saturday when no one else was there, so she stripped and snapped pictures of herself nude.

She's married today, but the so-called expose continues. Matter of fact, she and hubby like to be naked at home. Sanae, another believer in less is more, recommends going naked for couples who want to experience feelings of security, devotion and happiness. For her, removing her undergarments has been absolutely "healing."

Healing? My ass! chortles gynecologist Dr. Ikuko Ikeshita. She eloquently speaks out against the dangers of getting a chill from over-exposure. She warns that it can lead to stiff shoulders, bloating, disturbance of the parasympathetic nervous system, menstrual irregularity, cramps, fatigue, listlessness -- and should these symptoms continue, they can lead to major depression. Not to mention that it's uncouth from a hygienic point of view. As she explains to Spa!, vaginal discharge functions as a barrier against bacteria. Thus, if a woman leaves her genitals exposed, she'll experience an increase in discharge.

So, are these maidens masochists, narcissists or exhibitionists? None of the above, concludes Spa! They're just girls yearning to be the heroine of their own stories, a drama that doesn't require talent, hard work, or even good looks. What a seductive, utterly under-rated, undie-less pleasure.

Slamming of Slander: Liberal Lies About the American Right by Ann H. Coulter (one of the top items in Amazon.com's most popular wishlist items):

"Liberals have been wrong about everything in the last half century," writes conservative pundit Ann Coulter, author of the bestselling anti-Clinton tome High Crimes and Misdemeanors. They've been especially wrong about Republicans, she writes. The bulk of Slander, in fact, is a well-documented brief dedicated to the proposition that most of the media despises anybody whose political opinions lie an inch to the right of the New York Times editorial page. This is hardly an original observation, though few have presented it with such verve. Coulter is the shock-jock of right-wing political commentary, able to dash off page after page of over-the-top but hilarious one-liners: "Liberals dispute slight reductions in the marginal tax rates as if they are trying to prevent Charles Manson from slaughtering baby seals." There's a certain amount of irony about an author who says "liberals prefer invective to engagement" also declaring, "The good part of being a Democrat is that you can commit crimes, sell out your base, bomb foreigners, and rape women, and the Democratic faithful will still think you're the greatest." But then carefully measured criticism never has been Coulter's shtick--or her appeal. Fans of Rush Limbaugh and admirers of Bernard Goldberg's Bias won't want to miss Slander. --John Miller

For those who don't know Ann Coulter, she is one of those blond, right-wing, talking heads who pop up on cable--the most outspoken one. "We should invade their countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity," she remarked after the terrorist attacks. She is no easier on liberals, on whom she blames, well, just about everything: "The liberal catechism includes a hatred of Christians, guns, the profit motive and political speech." Page after page of invective follows: "In radical Islam liberals finally found a religion they could respect." The diatribe (complete with footnotes when she's quoting liberals) continues through discussions of the liberal press, the "apocryphal" religious right, and liberals' inability to engage in ideas, only name-calling(!). Sometimes she makes a valid point. She's exactly right about the way the media criticizes women because of their looks. She neglects to mention, though, that this criticism is not restricted to Republican women such as Linda Tripp. Just ask Hillary Clinton. Coulter tries very hard to be incendiary, but she comes across as merely tedious. Although she claims liberals run the press, she'll no doubt turn up on many right-wing call-in shows, among other venues, so a buy a copy. Ilene Cooper
Hahaha:

"oh saw the faculty cheerleading during dance today. it's like..i dunno.. amateur cheerleading..and ultra bimbotic. only saw the cps pple though..damn a lot of screams and shrieks *rolls eyes* and i can't stand that look on their faces when they dance..they gave me the impression that they think they're blardee chio or sth. give me a break. there are only two dancers from arts fac in the j1 batch. like wth. so i don't expect arts fac cheerleading to be good...

as much as i love rj..there are some things about rjc which i find particularly annoying.

1. too many poseurs. i dunno why..but pple seem to hang out at the canteen..just to be watched. haha. and i find the 'rugby table' especially distasteful. baaah.

2. too windy. ok firstly...wind is contact lens' biggest enemy. i gotta keep blinking to keep my contacts in place. difficult to describe the level of discomfort..you'll understand if you wear contacts. and i look retarded if i keep blinking. yea. and the other problem about rj being too windy is that it's hard to keep your pinafore tamed. haha. i saw david while walking towards the canteen today. i was sort of holding on to my pinafore at first. but i waved. and my pinafore flew up in a *whoosh* i was like oops and tried to hold it down. dUh. hope i reacted fast enough. nothing exposed?"

Blog surfing is so amusing when you've nothing to do :) The dynamic youth are getting up to so much fun. No one wants to read about guard duty, otoh. Not that anyone seems to write about it.

This morning we had a run at East Coast. Qingru was there. He's being attached to my unit for 2 weeks for the last part of his course (and Melvin to 1SIR - haha!). I hope he goes to a better unit in the end (stayout!), though there *are* many worse places to be. Oh well, maybe I will be able to look forward to seeing more one face from old times in the future :)

I'm on excuse, so I was looking after the bags while most others went for a short but invigorating run.

I felt like a change, so I wore my JC shorts, only to get scolded by Patrick for being 'hao lian'. Bah. Anyway there was one other person I saw wearing RJ shorts, so I wasn't alone.

There was this VJ girl cycling, presumably to school. In her school uniform. It was quite an eye opener (and rather amusing too), seeing someone cycle in an A-line skirt. I never thought it possible. Later, there was this quite handsome guy rollerblading while topless and looking very happy. Except that he was balding, so.

Across the path from where me and some people were taking care of the bags, there was this circle of senior citizens engaging in some odd activities. They laughed while gesticulating every now and then, and then started clapping a rhythm regularly. The games reminded me of those that babies play. Me and those people with me were quite freaked out, really.

I was invited to today's commissioning, so I got to see the hundreds of officer cadets displaying their drill skills and listening to the MC, some lian woman who didn't speak very well and had an irritating voice, while enjoying the company of 2 of Yucheng's JC classmates, including "King" Zhuobin.

My favourite pioneer left even before the President had arrived. Gah.

Some girl behind us asked why the drill commands were in Malay when most Singaporeans didn't understand Malay. Her companion said it was corruption. Huh?

I found out what "Munnoru Valliea" (or however you spell it) means - it's about brave young men. I should've guessed. Surprisingly, the Officer Cadets in Training pronounced the words very accurately - they sounded like real Indians singing. However, musically, they still fall short - they kept rushing the National Anthem and mispronounced some parts.

It was amusing, and somewhat comforting, to see that even Officer Cadets don't have perfect drill :)

The contingent commander of one Navy contingent didn't buckle his scabbard on properly, and partway through the parade, we could see it dangling and dragging on the floor as he marched along. Oh, the horror. But it wasn't as funny as the navy cadets in white pants and white shoes, which has always made them look goofy.

The way they arranged the female cadets was rather funny. The backline of one contingent was arranged such: tall, short, tall, short, tall, short, tall, not-so-short (male and female alternately)

For some reason, the Armour Officers were special - instead of wearing the funny Number 1 Uniform's Hat, they wore their black berets. Meh.

At one point, they got the leaders of "the eight major religious faiths" to bless the Officer Cadets. I thought this was supposed to be a secular society. I wonder what the atheists think about this travesty. Also, the 8 "major" faiths included Zoroastrianism and Baha'i, but not the Jewish faith. Bah.

Eugene Ng got the Sword of Honour for his Weapons System Officer course - yeh.

Kadir thought that Auld Lang Syne was the National Anthem. Doh! The song Auld Lang Syne, oddly enough, was listed as "OCS Farewell - L. Laini/Beethoven" on the program.

Yucheng gave the three of us red packets, and admonished us not to open them till we had reached the bus stop. My red packet felt very substantial, so I was suspicious. When we'd opened and compared our hong baos, we found that all of us got FHM cutouts. Gah. I didn't expect any less from him, really.

Some newly commissioned cadets eating at the post-parade Indian buffet dinner, together with the 2nd class guests. Maybe they were blacklisted, or they didn't have any dates for the ball and that was their punishment.

There was this feature on News Radio 93.8 about Islam's adapting to modernity and they interviewed several prominent academics and their views. All of them opined that the current interpretation as practiced by many Muslims is mired in the 7th Century and doesn't take into context the era's socio-political-cultural context. It was all very interesting, but don't people get sick of this sort of thing? It's been more than a year since 9/11 and the "let's understand Muslims" drives began. I'd think that every Tom, Dick and Harry would be an expert by now. If even *I* am tiring of this issue, I don't see why others aren't :)

Yaodong told me that he reads Balderdash. Hello Yaodong! Shawn writes about you too. You can go and read his "beautiful thoughts" too. His latest entry features you! There's also the ICQ log you forgot about, the time they wanted to dedicate a song to you, tales about your SIT test exploits, and more besides.

Everyone loves talking and writing about you.
More thoughts on "Why Do People Hate America?", after finishing it:

The book makes the point that ordinary Americans have little influence on American domestic and foreign policy and decries this. However, what isn't said is that this is the case in I daresay all countries. With the advent of Indirect Representation, the electorate no longer has the influence on the polity's behavior as it did under Direct Representation, as practiced in Classical Athens. Having ordinary people debate and vote on policy regularly is simply not feasible anymore - people have neither the time nor the interest (witness the <50% turnout in American elections and the low turnouts elsewhere) to do so, which is why we have systems of indirect representation. Besides, opinion polls do have some effect on governmental decision making - it would be suicidal to defy the will of the people all the time.

Some of the ideas advanced in the book seem rather far fetched and take some degree of imagination to conceive of. In addition, it intimates that the USA and the US people are simplistic and shallow. I know that there are many dumb Americans, but it isn't really fair to condemn an entire country and people just like that.

The central assumption that the book makes - that people *do* hate America, does seem rather extreme and unsubstantiated. Indeed, the book concludes that EVERYONE hates America, which is an unfair and untrue assertion.

The USA is not unique in thinking that it is a paragon. All powers, when they were pre-eminent (and many when they weren't, or never were), though themselves special, paramount or chosen in some way, though that doesn't exonerate America. Paradoxes and contradictions exist in all societies, and not just in the USA.

To be fair, the book does make many good points. For example, that of Americans treating violence as a form of communication - Timothy McVeigh bombed the Oklahoma City federal building to send a message, and people who passionately defend the right of the foetus to live can bomb abortion clinics and assassinate doctors who perform abortions in cold blood. However, I *am* critical by nature, and critics are supposed to criticise, so.
