Melvin introduced me to Soulseek as an alternative to Kazaa, where it is hard to find non-mainstream stuff, you always get porn when you don't want it, and people are being scared away by the RIAA. Indeed, though the download speeds on Soulseek are slow, you can find many things. For example I found many people with the full version of Handel's Messiah, and 3-4 versions of Banchieri's Contrapunto bestiale alla mente. For some reason too, it reminds me of Napster.

Why is it so hard to find non-guitar versions of Albeniz's Asturias? Grr.

Virus Origin - A Manmade Retribution - A weird commentary piece on how our pollution of the environment and playing God led to SARS, by someone who probably believes in the Gaia theory.

Heil Dubya!

Was inspired to make this after seeing a "No God, No Peace. Know God, Know Peace" bookmark:

The commentator for NDP this year claims some of the soldiers from 1st Guards voluntarily extended their ORD dates by 2 months just to take part in NDP.

wth?!

Someone: "the NDP caused my browser to crash"

I'm so happy I'm not at the rubbish point at this year's NDP :)

Someone else:

"CDF [Ed" Chief of Defence Force] looks like Kim Jong Il ahahah

cannot make it lah
doesn't look garang at all
got no badges also"

Apparently Mr Sentient is still getting enquiries on Hunter-Seeker, his little Neopets program.

The Copyright Cage - Bars can't have TVs bigger than 55 inches. Teddy bears can't include tape decks. Girl Scouts who sing "Puff, the Magic Dragon" owe royalties. Copyright law needs to change. By Jonathan Zittrain

Conceptual Guerilla's Strategy and Tactics - Defeat The Right In Three Minutes - Sounds alarmist, but strangely, almost all of it strikes a chord with me. Which just shows you left wing I am *g*

Veil go a long way - Burqa covered band in Afghanistan with songs like "He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Burka" by "The Hollies" (wth?!)

Three Hundred Proofs of God's Existence

Some of the funniest ones (do read the rest, as there are many other great "proofs")

8. ARGUMENT FROM MIRACLES
(1) My aunt had cancer.
(2) The doctors gave her all these horrible treatments.
(3) My aunt prayed to God and now she doesn't have cancer.
(4) Therefore, God exists.

34. ARGUMENT FROM MANIFESTATIONS
(1) If you turn your head sideways and squint a little, you can see an image of a bearded face in that tortilla.
(2) Therefore, God exists.

36. ARGUMENT FROM INCOMPLETE DEVASTATION
(1) A plane crashed killing 143 passengers and crew.
(2) But one child survived with only third-degree burns.
(3) Therefore, God exists.

42. ARGUMENT FROM INCOHERENT BABBLE
(1) See that person spazzing on the church floor babbling incoherently?
(2) That's how infinite wisdom reveals itself.
(3) Therefore, God exists.

77. ARGUMENT FROM PERSONAL SANITY
(1) I've had religious experiences that can't be explained unless I'm insane or God exists.
(2) Therefore, God exists.

93. ARGUMENT FROM SPEAKING IN TOUNGES
(1) My friend here, once started spontaneously speaking some jibberish that sounded to me kind of like Russian.
(2) But neither he nor I know anything about Russian.
(3) The only explanation is God.
(4) Therefore, God exists.

103. ARGUMENT FROM EXODUS
(1) If the Exodus story has any basis in historical fact, then God exists.
(2) Some guy found some chariot wheels at the bottom of the Red Sea.
(3) There is absolutely no other way that chariots could get to the bottom of the Red Sea.
(4) This means the Exodus story is true.
(5) Therefore, God exists.

104. ARGUMENT FROM MARTYRDOM
(1) The apostles would not have died for something they knew wasn't true.
(2) Atheist gives examples of martyrs outside Christendom.
(3) Obviously those examples were fooled by Satan.
(4) Therefore, God exists.

106. ARGUMENT FROM LACK OF DISPROOF
(1) You can't prove God doesn't exist!
(2) Therefore, God exists.

107. ARGUMENT FROM ANECDOTAL EXPERIENCE (I)
(1) I once experienced something I can't explain.
(2) Atheists offer several possible, natural explanations.
(3) You're just guessing! I was there.
(4) Therefore, God exists.

138. ARGUMENT FROM TERRORISM (I)
(1) Terrorists destroyed the WTC, killing thousands.
(2) One piece of the rubble sort of looks like a cross.
(3) Therefore, God exists.

143. ARGUMENT FROM SPAGHETTI
(1) A few people saw something weird in a bowl of spaghetti.
(2) Some Catholics believe that it is the Virgin Mary.
(3) Therefore, God exists.

169. ARGUMENT FROM A BAD TRIP
(1) I went to a party and took LSD.
(2) I saw demons attacking me.
(3) Then Jesus came and drove the demons away.
(4) So I joined the Assemblies of God.
(5) Therefore, God exists.

172. ARGUMENT FROM PRAYER
(1) When I pray, either it comes true or God has a better plan.
(2) Therefore, God exists.

182. ARGUMENT FROM RAIN (aka PERCHANCE'S SISTER'S ARGUMENT III)
(1) I wanted it to be a sunny day.
(2) I prayed it wouldn't rain.
(3) We had two thunderstorms.
(4) Obviously, God didn't want to answer my prayer.
(5) Of course not! What a selfish thing to pray for! How dare I try to compel God to my selfish desires!
(6) The rain was God's punishment for my selfish desires.
(7) Therefore, God exists.

218. ARGUMENT FROM ABUSING THE BODY
(1) One time, I fasted for three days straight, prayed on my knees for hours, and didn't sleep, either.
(2) At the end of that time, God answered me.
(3) You see, you just have to mortify the flesh and accept the things of the spirit in order to meet God.
(4) No, there is no possibility that it was a hallucination!
(5) Therefore, God exists.

219. ARGUMENT FROM ECSTASY (used by a number of saints)
(1) I woke up last night with a feeling of indescribable pleasure and joy.
(2) It couldn't have been sexual; I'm holy and never have thoughts like those.
(3) So the ecstasy must have come from God.
(4) Therefore, God exists.

254. ARGUMENT FROM MUSHROOMS
(1) This pizza tastes funny.
(2) That purple llama on the ceiling is juggling chainsaws.
(3) Purple llamas can't juggle chainsaws.
(4) It must be a miracle!
(5) Therefore, God exists.

257. ARGUMENT FROM NOT-BELIEVING
(1) The New Testament says people like you would question us.
(2) You question us.
(3) Therefore the bible is true.
(4) Therefore, God exists.

259. ARGUMENT FROM METEORS (FALWELL'S ARGUMENT)
(1) God hates gay people.
(2) God is merciful.
(3) Disney World held a Gay Day parade.
(4) God could punish Disney World by sending hurricanes, earthquakes, and possibly a meteor to Florida.
(5) God didn't, thus proving both postulate 1 and 2.
(6) Therefore, God exists.

263. ARGUMENT FROM PERSONAL ABILITY
(1) I prayed to God, and then lifted a car off my trapped puppy.
(2) I couldn't have done that without God.
(3) Therefore, God exists.

275. ARGUMENT FROM GOOD AND BAD BEHAVIOR
(1) Sometimes I do good things and sometimes I do bad things.
(2) When I do something good this PROVES that God, my Guardian Angel etc are helping me to be good.
(3) Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord! Oh God help me to be strong and steadfast against temptation till I die so that You God will not in Your infinite mercy, send me to Hell.
(4) When I do something bad this PROVES that the Devil has tempted me to do EVIL.
(5) Whatever I do it proves that either God or the Devil is real.
(6) Therefore, God exists.

294. "TRUE BECAUSE IT IS INCONSISTENT" ARGUMENT
(1) If the Bible were cooked up by some smooth-talking manipulative authors, it would have been perfect and seamless and without any apparent inconsistencies.
(2) But the Bible IS inconsistent, erroneous, and plain goofy at many places
(3) So the Bible is NOT a product of some smooth-talking manipulative authors.
(4) Hence the Bible is the word of God.
(5) Therefore, God exists.

323. ARGUMENT FROM A VIDEO I WATCHED WITH MY DAD
(1) Me and my dad watched this video where the Virgin Mary appeared on a building in Egypt. No, it was kinda blurry... lots of people saw it though and they were pointing at it.
(2) Therefore, God exists.

329. ARGUMENT FROM WHAT MAKES SENSE
(1) Doesn't it just make more sense that an all-knowing, all-powerful, all-good deity created the world out of nothingness, from magic, essentially, and then punished us for eating a piece of fruit, and then incarnated himself in human flesh and came down to shed his own blood so he could break his own rules, and then went through hell on a temporary basis and then went back into the sky and promised to come back and take everyone who believed in him to this heaven no one has ever seen?
(2) Well, doesn't it?
(3) Therefore, God exists.

335. ARGUMENT FROM AGNOSTICISM IN INDIA
(1) [non-believer asks if the theist would still call his religious experiences Christian if he had been raised in another country]
(2) Would you call your agnostic experiences agnostic if you had been raised in India?
(3) Therefore, God exists.

337. MODIFIED TRILEMMA ARGUMENT
(1) Jesus was either lord, liar, or lunatic.
(2) Can you PROVE He was a liar or lunatic?
(3) Therefore, God exists.
Questions and Answers about Foreign Policy (and the U.S. Invasion of Iraq) (c) 2003 anarchie bunker

Q: Daddy, why did we have to attack Iraq?

A: Because they had weapons of mass destruction.

Q: But the inspectors didn't find any weapons of mass destruction.

A: That's because the Iraqis were hiding them.

Q: And that's why we invaded Iraq?

A: Yep. Invasions always work better than inspections.

Q: But after we invaded them, we STILL didn't find any weapons of mass destruction, did we?

A: That's because the weapons are so well hidden. Don't worry, we'll find something, probably right before the 2004 election.

Q: Why did Iraq want all those weapons of mass destruction?

A: To use them in a war, silly.

Q: I'm confused. If they had all those weapons that they planned to use in a war, then why didn't they use any of those weapons when we went to war with them?

A: Well, obviously they didn't want anyone to know they had those weapons, so they chose to die by the thousands rather than defend themselves.

Q: That doesn't make sense. Why would they choose to die if they had all those big weapons with which they could have fought back?

A: It's a different culture. It's not supposed to make sense.

Q: I don't know about you, but I don't think they had any of those weapons our government said they did.

A: Well, you know, it doesn't matter whether or not they had those weapons. We had another good reason to invade them anyway.

Q: And what was that?

A: Even if Iraq didn't have weapons of mass destruction, Saddam Hussein was a cruel dictator, which is another good reason to invade another country.

Q: Why? What does a cruel dictator do that makes it OK to invade his country?

A: Well, for one thing, he tortured his own people.

Q: Kind of like what they do in China?

A: Don't go comparing China to Iraq. China is a good economic competitor, where millions of people work for slave wages in sweatshops to make U.S. corporations richer.

Q: So if a country lets its people be exploited for American corporate gain, it's a good country, even if that country tortures people?

A: Right.

Q: Why were people in Iraq being tortured?

A: For political crimes, mostly, like criticizing the government.
People who criticized the government in Iraq were sent to prison and tortured.

Q: Isn't that exactly what happens in China?

A: I told you, China is different.

Q: What's the difference between China and Iraq?

A: Well, for one thing, Iraq was ruled by the Ba'ath party, while China is Communist.

Q: Didn't you once tell me Communists were bad?

A: No, just Cuban Communists are bad.

Q: How are the Cuban Communists bad?

A: Well, for one thing, people who criticize the government in Cuba are sent to prison and tortured.

Q: Like in Iraq?

A: Exactly.

Q: And like in China, too?

A: I told you, China's a good economic competitor. Cuba, on the other hand, is not.

Q: How come Cuba isn't a good economic competitor?

A: Well, you see, back in the early 1960s, our government passed some laws that made it illegal for Americans to trade or do any business with Cuba until they stopped being Communists and started being capitalists like us.

Q: But if we got rid of those laws, opened up trade with Cuba, and started doing business with them, wouldn't that help the Cubans become capitalists?

A: Don't be a smart-ass.

Q: I didn't think I was being one.

A: Well, anyway, they also don't have freedom of religion in Cuba.

Q: Kind of like China and the Falun Gong movement?

A: I told you, stop saying bad things about China. Anyway, Saddam Hussein came to power through a military coup, so he's not really a legitimate leader anyway.

Q: What's a military coup?

A: That's when a military general takes over the government of a country by force, instead of holding free elections like we do in the United States.

Q: Didn't the ruler of Pakistan come to power by a military coup?

A: You mean General Pervez Musharraf? Uh, yeah, he did, but Pakistan is our friend.

Q: Why is Pakistan our friend if their leader is illegitimate?

A: I never said Pervez Musharraf was illegitimate.

Q: Didn't you just say a military general who comes to power by forcibly overthrowing the legitimate government of a nation is an illegitimate leader?

A: Only Saddam Hussein. Pervez Musharraf is our friend, because he helped us invade Afghanistan.

Q: Why did we invade Afghanistan?

A: Because of what they did to us on September 11th.

Q: What did Afghanistan do to us on September 11th?

A: Well, on September 11th, nineteen men - fifteen of them Saudi Arabians - hijacked four airplanes and flew three of them into buildings, killing over 3,000 Americans.

Q: So how did Afghanistan figure into all that?

A: Afghanistan was where those bad men trained, under the oppressive rule of the Taliban.

Q: Aren't the Taliban those bad radical Islamics who chopped off people's heads and hands?

A: Yes, that's exactly who they were. Not only did they chop off people's heads and hands, but they oppressed women, too.

Q: Didn't the Bush administration give the Taliban 43 million dollars back in May of 2001?

A: Yes, but that money was a reward because they did such a good job fighting drugs.

Q: Fighting drugs?

A: Yes, the Taliban were very helpful in stopping people from growing opium poppies.

Q: How did they do such a good job?

A: Simple. If people were caught growing opium poppies, the Taliban would have their hands and heads cut off.

Q: So, when the Taliban cut off people's heads and hands for growing flowers, that was OK, but not if they cut people's heads and hands off for other reasons?

A: Yes. It's OK with us if radical Islamic fundamentalists cut off people's hands for growing flowers, but it's cruel if they cut off people's hands for stealing bread.

Q: Don't they also cut off people's hands and heads in Saudi Arabia?

A: That's different. Afghanistan was ruled by a tyrannical patriarchy that oppressed women and forced them to wear burqas whenever they were in public, with death by stoning as the penalty for women who did not comply.

Q: Don't Saudi women have to wear burqas in public, too?

A: No, Saudi women merely wear a traditional Islamic body covering.

Q: What's the difference?

A: The traditional Islamic covering worn by Saudi women is a modest yet fashionable garment that covers all of a woman's body except for her eyes and fingers. The burqa, on the other hand, is an evil tool of patriarchal oppression that covers all of a woman's body except for her eyes and fingers.

Q: It sounds like the same thing with a different name.

A: Now, don't go comparing Afghanistan and Saudi Arabia. The Saudis are our friends.

Q: But I thought you said 15 of the 19 hijackers on September 11th were from Saudi Arabia.

A: Yes, but they trained in Afghanistan.

Q: Who trained them?

A: A very bad man named Osama bin Laden.

Q: Was he from Afghanistan?

A: Uh, no, he was from Saudi Arabia too. But he was a bad man, a very bad man.

Q: I seem to recall he was our friend once.

A: Only when we helped him and the mujahadeen repel the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan back in the 1980s.

Q: Who are the Soviets? Was that the Evil Communist Empire Ronald Reagan talked about?

A: There are no more Soviets. The Soviet Union broke up in 1990 or thereabouts, and now they have elections and capitalism like us. We call them Russians now.

Q: So the Soviets - I mean, the Russians - are now our friends?

A: Well, not really. You see, they were our friends for many years after they stopped being Soviets, but then they decided not to support our invasion of Iraq, so we're mad at them now. We're also mad at the French and the Germans because they didn't help us invade Iraq either.

Q: So the French and Germans are evil, too?

A: Not exactly evil, but just bad enough that we had to rename French fries and French toast to Freedom Fries and Freedom Toast.

Q: Do we always rename foods whenever another country doesn't do what we want them to do?

A: No, we just do that to our friends. Our enemies, we invade.

Q: But wasn't Iraq one of our friends back in the 1980s?

A: Well, yeah. For a while.

Q: Was Saddam Hussein ruler of Iraq back then?

A: Yes, but at the time he was fighting against Iran, which made him our friend, temporarily.

Q: Why did that make him our friend?

A: Because at that time, Iran was our enemy.

Q: Isn't that when he gassed the Kurds?

A: Yeah, but since he was fighting against Iran at the time, we looked the other way, to show him we were his friend.

Q: So anyone who fights against one of our enemies automatically becomes our friend?

A: Most of the time, yes.

Q: And anyone who fights against one of our friends is automatically an enemy?

A: Sometimes that's true, too. However, if American corporations can profit by selling weapons to both sides at the same time, all the better.

Q: Why?

A: Because war is good for the economy, which means war is good for America. Also, since God is on America's side, anyone who opposes war is a godless unAmerican Communist. Do you understand now why we attacked Iraq?

Q: I think so. We attacked them because God wanted us to, right?

A: Yes.

Q: But how did we know God wanted us to attack Iraq?

A: Well, you see, God personally speaks to George W. Bush and tells him what to do.

Q: So basically, what you're saying is that we attacked Iraq because George W. Bush hears voices in his head?

A. Yes! You finally understand how the world works. Now close your eyes, make yourself comfortable, and go to sleep. Good night.

Q: Good night, Daddy.

I suppose when it comes to Shawn Ban, people are divided into one of two categories - one group thinks he rocks, and another thinks he sucks. I am pretty thick skinned, so I daresay I am able to enjoy his flair (sans any sports commentary) most of the time, even when I am the target of his acerbic pen (or keyboard).

Now, in his latest entertaining stunt, he has been telling the whole world that Melvin Tay is going with Suzanne Wong. This has prompted a letter of protest from the aforementioned, who has requested that it be sent to "many many people", which is why I will reproduce it below:

"Dear Friend,

My Name is Melvin Tay. I Know you may have heard some Nasty rumours about me perpetuated by a Boy named Shawn Ban, like I Love Soozie, but it isn't true. The rumours all started here http://www.eatmejusteatme.50g.com/131.htm - Last Paragraph
The next time somebody tells u something silly, go and find out the truth for yourself. Please send this message to many many people. May peace be with you."

I am just felled with laughter.

On a more serious note he, who scolded me for my interest in a certain unfortunate tragedy, has written many paragraphs coldly analysing it. How ironic.

Boy am I lucky I signed up for Pyxz when it was still free. It's gone from being free to costing $5 for a lifetime subscription to - now - $5 a month and $45 yearly.

Wah.

Sent to me by mail:

Dear [name of a boy],

It has come to my attention that you have been selected as a potential student of ACS(I). We are indeed pleased to welcome you to our big
family. However, there are a few improvements that have to be made for you to be qualified to be one of us.

Firstly, your physical appearance needs alteration. According to our school's tradition, our attire includes:

1. spiked hair
2. pants worn on the hips
3. almost completely hidden socks
4. shirts not tucked in properly etc.

Furthermore, you must have bushy eyebrows and tan skin to be eligible. Thus, we would appeal that you make this changes ASAP.

Secondly, other than outward appearance, what goes on inside is crucial as well. We adhere struictly to our 3 acts: Act Cool, Act Attitude
and Act Poser, stressing on poser-ism as the basis of our image.

Act cool: All ACSI students are required to be adept in pretending to be cool in the way bimbos will fall for the trick, even though it is obviously not the proper definition of "cool". We do not want our students to be cool but to ACT cool. This will include mannerisms like acting nonchalant and pompous that will create the false impression that ACSI guys are indeed very desirable and good looking.

Act attitude: Due to the fact that bimbos absolutely love attitudal guys, we emphasise strongly on pretending to have attitude in our boys. You
will hence have to act like a very bad person when you are in fact an insecure and deprived person.

Act poser: AS this is the trademark of our school, it will require no further explanation.

To adhere to our school's motto "The best is yet to be", we require you to stop getting good results in school especially in the area of literature, as this opposes our motto. You will hence need to go out more with bimbos, have fun, screw around and be less concerned with your studies.

Your Chinese grades need to be extremely poor and you will have to hate it a lot. In other words, you must forget all your roots and be a perfect banana. You are also required to be rich to avoid being ostracised and looked down upon in our school. More emphasis will also be put on sports to create the false impression that ACSI guys are all rounders.

We look forward to your joining our huge ACS family and we certainly do believe you have the potential, judging by your bimbo attracting
qualities prevalent in all our students. We believe that with more posing, despising Chinese and acting, you can definitely be an outstanding representation of ACSI.

yours sincerely,
Ong Teck Chin
Principal

Last week's weekly post will be merged with next week's due to scarcity of material.
After listening to Trevor Pinnock and his English Concert and Chorus Oratorio quick and upbeat interpretation of Handel's Messiah for so long, it's odd to be forced to listen to something else, namely the slower and more ponderous version by the St. Petersburg State Academic Symphony Orchestra (since I do not feel like listening to my sister's CD version with a Boys' Choir singing the Sop part and Male Solos for Alto-Bass, and she probably has the CDs with her anyway). There seems to be life lacking in this version, the words roll awkwardly off their tongues while their accents are quite distinctive, I can pick out individual voices, the choir strains very often, I can't hear much joy or awe in parts like "And The Glory of The Lord", the Tenors sounded like they were yawning when singing "And He Shall Reign Forever And Ever" and in "For Unto Us A Child Is Born" and I *swear* they sung, "The Prince Of Piss". All in all, it sounds like a Senior Citizens' choir.

Okay, so I'm picky. Maybe it's something to do with the fact that they're Russians.

Haha my "how not to sing the song" mp3 (TBS's horribly done version of John Rutter's "The Music's Always There With You") is available for download on Kazaa from someone, even though it was wiped from my own system. It will live on forever!

I feel drained. A sad life can be tiring.

It's strange when, sometimes, when I'm in camp I want to get out, yet when I'm out I want to go back in.

Wow. People on Kazaa actually have Forever Red!

Just watched it. Reunion episodes are so fun.

You know Matrix-esque special effects are overused when even Power Rangers uses them. I don't like the techno edge to the effects (and indeed other parts of the show as well) though - it reminds me of why I didn't like Transformers: Beast Wars. Even Serpenterra looks very artificial now, not as attractive as when they spliced Kakuranger footage. Is this what we'll be seeing on Channel i next season? Erk.

In case anyone wants it, music from:

Planescape: Torment

5 pages of music for:
Phantasy Star, ICO and "SAMPAGUITA"
Baldur's Gate II, Diablo II and (some foreign character 2140)
Metal Gear 2 The Other Side and 2 other games the titles of which I can't read
Icewind Dale, Warcraft III Reign of Chaos, ??? 4 and Baldur's Gate
Street Fighter III_ New Generation Arrange (sic) Album and "KOUDELKA"

With my collection eradicated, I fear I will be reduced to listening to semi-popular music due to lack of availability, time constraints and choice. I don't think I will be so bored as to click on random interesting sounding tracks on MP3.com, especially since there are much fewer tracks available for download there than before. Rarer tracks (eg a non-single artiste version, or an acapella version of "True Colors", like the ones I had by a Kokopelli Youth Choir and the Tufts Amalgamates) will also be hard to get since there's no automatic downloading nowadays like Audiogalaxy had.

[Update: I managed to get the Tufts' version. It's sleazy, but not as spine-chillingly intolerable as the original (?) pop version by Cindy Lauper. I compared the two, and in the pop version the woman sounds like, at different parts of the piece, like a whiny 5 year old kid, a gawkish 14 year old, a blasting 25 year old diva, a menopausal 55 year old and a throaty 80 year old grandma. What's more, she slides so effortlessly between voices. It's so creepy, it makes me wonder if they cranked it through a voice processor.]

H.M.S. Pinafore
Song No. 9 -- Act I
When I was a lad

SIR JOSEPH.
When I was a lad I served a term
As office boy to an Attorney's firm.
I cleaned the windows and I swept the floor,
And I polished up the handle of the big front door.

CHORUS.
He polished up the handle of the big front door.

SIR JOSEPH.
I polished up that handle so carefullee
That now I am the Ruler of the Queen's Navee!

CHORUS.
He polished up that handle so carefullee,
That now he is the ruler of the Queen's Navee.

SIR JOSEPH.
As office boy I made such a mark
That they gave me the post of a junior clerk.
I served the writs with a smile so bland,
And I copied all the letters in a big round hand.

CHORUS.
He copied all the letters in a big round hand.

SIR JOSEPH.
I copied all the letters in a hand so free,
That now I am the Ruler of the Queen's Navee!

CHORUS.
He copied all the letters in a hand so free,
That now he is the Ruler of the Queen's Navee!

SIR JOSEPH.
In serving writs I made such a name
That an articled clerk I soon became;
I wore clean collars and a brand-new suit
For the pass examination at the Institute.

CHORUS.
For the pass examination at the Institute.

SIR JOSEPH.
That pass examination did so well for me,
That now I am the Ruler of the Queen's Navee!

CHORUS.
That pass examination did so well for he,
That now he is the Ruler of the Queen's Navee!

SIR JOSEPH.
Of legal knowledge I acquired such a grip
That they took me into the partnership.
And that junior partnership, I ween,
Was the only ship that I ever had seen.

CHORUS.
Was the only ship that he ever had seen.

SIR JOSEPH.
But that kind of ship so suited me,
That now I am the ruler of the Queen's Navee!

CHORUS.
But that kind of ship so suited he,
That now he is the ruler of the Queen's Navee!

SIR JOSEPH.
I grew so rich that I was sent
By a pocket borough into Parliament.
I always voted at my party's call,
And I never thought of thinking for myself at all.

CHORUS.
He never thought of thinking for himself at all.

SIR JOSEPH.
I thought so little, they rewarded me
By making me the Ruler of the Queen's Navee!

CHORUS.
He thought so little, they rewarded he
By making him the Ruler of the Queen's Navee!

SIR JOSEPH.
Now landsmen all, whoever you may be,
If you want to rise to the top of the tree,
If your soul isn't fettered to an office stool,
Be careful to be guided by this golden rule.

CHORUS.
Be careful to be guided by this golden rule.

SIR JOSEPH.
Stick close to your desks and never go to sea,
And you all may be rulers of the Queen's Navee!

CHORUS.
Stick close to your desks and never go to sea,
And you all may be rulers of the Queen's Navee!
I was asked to accompany Mr Kairen to the "International Youth Conference For Democracy", organised by the SDP. Unfortunately, a barrage of tragedies hit him at the last moment, and he informed me that he was broke at the last minute, and so couldn't dine with me. Later, he had to visit the doctor, so in the end I had to wait at Carlton Hotel for almost 2 1/2 hours (including their lunch break) listening to the panel, chaired by Chee Soon Juan, talk about Asian Values and Asian Democracy without even getting to witness the spectacle of Kairen lampooning Chee Soon Juan.

That said, many panelists and members of the floor seemed overly pessimistic, and held extreme views against the PAP, and this was to the detriment of the credibility of the conference, the SDP and Chee Soon Juan. One panelist even claimed that we have *no* freedom of speech and freedom of assembly. If that were the case, how come they were able to organise and hold this conference without any interference by the police? The same also claimed that the repression here was equal to that in Burma, except that here it was more sophisticated. Perhaps, but I prefer the view that it is just less severe and extreme here. Also hurting the credibility of the whole conference was how the discussion seemed to be steered sometimes by the chairman in certain directions not all at all related to the topic of discussion, but instead more to do with his personal goals. More flagrantly, there was one member of the audience - an SDP member, I suspect - who hijacked the discussion totally and started pouring out the usual litany of grouses against the government.

They also screened a home video of Mr Chee getting bundled into a van the time he got apprehended for speaking at the Istana without a permit. His characteristic flourishes of melodrama were evident in the video as he kept protesting his innocence and peaceful intentions loudly, and there was even this woman heard shouting in the background, "Free him! Free him! He hasn't done anything wrong!" just as he was bundled into the van. I wonder if they realise that such dramatic touches redolent of Channel 8 dramas only serve to discredit them in the eyes of most Singaporeans.

Regardless, they did bring up some good points. The reason why Singapore, Malaysia and other states do not want to "interfere" in other countries' "internal affairs" is that they fear - know - that their own houses are hardly in good order, and that reciprocal concern about their own "internal affairs" would raise many difficult and embarassing questions. Also, restricting the rights of the majority because of the harm a small minority might do (Read: the blanket suppression of all "sensitive" issues like race and religion in the name of racial harmony) is unjust, and can be compared to banning football matches due to the possibility of thugs starting a riot, or even suspending Parliament because of the possibility of fist fights (ala Taiwan).

I wonder how many people care about politics here. Most are probably jaded after witnessing the string of lawsuits brought against members of Opposition Parties, and crass materialism has replaced any nobler ideals that might have once burned in their souls.
A fortnight's assortment of detritus. Even more messy than usual:

Quote of the Fortnight: "When the going gets tough, the tough may get going, but the smart cut corners"

With all the recruits swarming us at odd hours, I think I now know why Tekong medics are so surly and unfriendly. The recruits keep taking MCs - in 14 days, I got 79 (IIRC) MCs, almost all of them from the recruits. That's like 19% of them seeing a non-SAF doctor once in 2 weeks. And poor me has to write the details of the MCs in the MC book, with help from my trust elves, and after that Frederick has to key the MCs into the computer. I think we should get a tip of $1 per MC - $0.70 for me and $0.30 for him (since writing it manually is more difficult).

Our sickbay has been renovated, so all the holes that the rats chewed in the walls have been patched up. Originally, I'd heard that the new walls were going to be made of metal, but in the end they used normal wall material for them. I'm wondering how long the rats will take to chew through the thing they used to seal the holes in the ceiling they normally run down from, as well as the walls.

I think that, except for the loss of recreation time, I prefer to do overtime than work in the day - it's much less crowded and noisy, I can wear more comfortable clothing, the radio is not tuned to 93.3FM so I can hijack it, and anyway they're just watching Chinese TV shows (often the inane Taiwanese ones) in bunk.

There was this guy going to DB, and he looked quite sad, so I offered him my nightsnack - a pineapple mooncake confection. At the sight of it, he visibly brightened. Twas the least I could do.

Our MO gets to rest whenever we have company runs of SOC RT, then he takes us running the next day, by which time he has recovered from the previous run, while we have not. Argh.

Some regulars like to run after they go to work, and before they go home. Not only is this running on company time allowed by their employer, it is tacitly encouraged. Not a bad deal, if you're the type who likes to run.

I think running in cadence (everyone running together), always a popular aim of runs, is silly. If everyone runs at a fast pace, slow people like me will drop dead. On the other hand, if everyone runs at a slow pace, most people will get bored.

While I was covering company games (their idea of games is to run before and after the games, incidentally), I got accosted by my CO who said I was the "famous Gabriel". My S3 was also there. Gee.

A recruit reported sick for week-long shin pain, had tender shins and got an X-Ray. I, on the other hand, have had tender and painful shins for 5 months now, and have reported sick for them 2-3 times, yet I've no X-Ray referrals. Why, why, why?!

RT personnel are not allowed to apply for days off on RT days. Gee, this means I have a choice of taking long weekends, or taking off on Monday, Wednesday or Friday and booking in at 10:30pm, or taking half days off on weekday mornings. I sure hope BMT ends soon. In other news, the CSM said it isn't her who made the book in timing earlier, so our misery is caused by other higher-ups!

Apparently Ban Xiong did not learn his lesson from the last time, and offered his services for unworthy causes again. When it came back to haunt him, I reminded him of his thoughts the first time he had been finagled, a true gem of wisdom equally applicable in this instance: "It kills to be altruistic. Little wonder why such pple die off. The more i brood on it, the more i hate myself. Dann (sic) the ***** bastards. I'll never help them again". My condolences go out to all who have been similarly affected by the machinations of ***** (what the asterisks mean, I am not at liberty to say).

My old problem is back! My CSM commented that I bounce and jiggle when I march.

Sleeping on 3 mattresses is more comfortable than 2, which in turn beats lying on 1. With 3 mattresses stacked on top of each other, the foam almost approximates King Koil!

Yaodong has been posted to 1PDF to run for them, escaping the tender mercies of his unit! We in Sungei Gedong are happy and he is happy. I'm not so sure about the people in Maju Camp, who will get to have "fun" with him like we did over the last year. Hopefully he will continue to be able to continue training for the SEA Games - all while being excused running in camp.

Apparently if I call the SAF Hotline, I could be talking to someone I know, who mans it. :0 Better make sure of who I'm talking to if I ever do...

One morning we had "Instant Bee Hoon" for breakfast. Didn't know they were so proud of serving up instant noodles instead of preparing it themselves. In these 2 weeks, I've also had 2 of the most atrocious meals I've ever had - one day it was Pseudo-Western food, but what they gave us was tasteless grilled/boiled chicken, sausage quarters in baked bean and frozen mixed vegetable sauce and sausage slices tossed with cabbage. The only redeeming part of the meal was the wedges - a most generous serving (though I think that if I had eaten at the 42SAR cookhouse, the server would have given us 2-3 wedges each only, and done whatever they do with the rest - maybe keep them for themselves), and crispy too. The other bad meal was when they had Nasi Briyani one day, but the dishes were: kang kong, prawns (SAF prawns are always bad), mutton cubes with mold growing on them, and a piece of limp, insipid looking chicken. Everyone, after seeing the food, rushed to the canteen.

The ATC canteen has played me out! Their curry puffs used to be nice and un-hot, making them the only ones I could tolerate, but one day I bit into one merrily, blissfully unaware, and after a few bites my mouth was aflame. Gah.

CD-Rs, CD-RWs and floppy disks are prohibited in SAF camps, mostly because of "security" reasons. Of course, since there are no floppy or CD-RW drives in SAF camps, the reality is exposed - they don't want people to bring in games to play, or pictures to look at. As for the fear of viruses - what self respecting virus would infect Microsoft Mail (1993)? Besides which, there are no points of entry into the Intranet in most terminals, anyway. Meanwhile, they use the same key for all of some types of vehicles, so anyone can steal them. But then again, who'd want muddy 30 year old vehicles which break down often?

Pioneer Magazine claims that the new Army Songs (eg 'Knock It Down') are being sung with gusto at BMTC. Somehow I doubt that some recruit out there is leading his platoon mates in singing, "Knock it down! Knock it down! So take it like a man and knock it down...).

For AHM this year, Vincent donated a princely $2, topped only by my contribution of $0.30. What can I say - no one wants to donate. Besides, all my friends are in the army. At least I wasn't forced to give $5 like last year, and I have Colonel Bernard Toh, Director of Public Affairs at Mindef, on my side. The pandemonium that Junxiong predicted with Wang and me being Docu ICs has yet to ensue!

Bob does not like to be called "Bob". As such, with a Herculean burst of effort, I shall attempt refer to him in other ways.

Junxiong's Armour slogans: Armour - Slow And Indecisive. Once Armour, Always Suffer

http://www.arousal-agency.isfabulous.com/ is a site that someone discovered when I told him to try searching "uniform" on Yahoo Auctions. I knew people were selling them, but I didn't expect them to go to the extent of hiring a "lovely in-house model" to model the uniforms. Interestingly, the description for RJC, ACJC, HCJC and SAJC says that they are each "one of Singapore's sexiest junior college uniforms". However, NYJC and NJC uniforms aren't so praised.

Chinese Pop is, if anything, even more brainless and repetitive than English Pop. 93.3 keeps playing songs of the moment, which are repeated daily, and you have songs like one, "Ai Yau Tan Dang Dang ", by this Taiwanese/Hong Kong/whatever young girl called "Xiao Xiao" which goes, at some parts, "dum da dum da dum dum da da da da da da da da da da dum da dum da dum da da da da" - I suspect that the song writer ran out of ideas for lyrics, so he decided to fill the space with meaningless syllables.

I've expressed my feelings about Taiwanese TV before, but I seem to witness greater and greater depravity on it. On one day, they had this train carriage choke full of men, and they had to carry a woman over their heads from one entrance of the carriage to another while she was squealing, taking the opportunity, of course, to grope her along the way. I was also informed that before that activity, they had the same carriage full of girls in bikinis, and guys took turns to squeeze past the girls from one entrance to another. I know people like to indulge themselves - but on television? And I wonder why the girls keep coming back to this sort of shows. It must be great fun.

The news report I read on Uday and Qusay's deaths was disappointingly misleading. It claimed that "countries across the world expressed joy and relief", but to substantiate that point, only Bush administration officials were quoted. The report also said that many world leaders approved of this development, and quoted... Tony Blair. Outstanding.

Someone brought FHM into camp, and before Wee spirited it away (and claimed he lost it later), I managed to read an intriguing interview with males who had undergone sex change operations. Apparently, they are able to lubricate, and the constructed clitoris works like a real one. The wonders of surgery nowadays! You learn something new everyday. Suspiciously, the next month's issue of Newman had an in-depth feature on transsexuals, with a detailed account of the sex-change process.

Chemistry's sudden trip into post-modernism is disturbing. Not only did it confuse viewers, scaring people like Ban Xiong away, it was poorly done. The show was going along quite fine, until they decided to pull the "show within a show" stunt. I think they just ran out of ideas.

Apparently after returning from his degree course and having a daughter, the Evil One is much less evil. Good for him!

Apparently there is someone called 'Sunshine', whom someone is gushing over (she was from SCGS, so that explains it). Names are getting weirder and weirder these days. Is there any "Moonlight"s and "Stardust"s around?

The views of some illiberals on the gay issue so irked me that I wrote my 4th letter to the ST Forum. Needless to say, it was rejected, as it had to compete with 144 other letters on the same issue, and they still have to allocate space for the publication of trivial questions that people should direct to the relevant companies, statutory boards or government agencies. Suffice to say that it is heartening that most people were in support of equal rights for all, though it is saddening to see that there are people who will not grant to others the indulgences and privileges that have been granted to them.

The Christian backlash seems overly reactionary, though. Some of them think that there is a "homosexual agenda" (no more sinister, of course, than the Christian agenda). One calls the homosexual movement a lot more "rampant, militant and organised" than before. Funny, somehow those seem the perfect terms to describe the evangelistic movement. Most disturbing of all was the person who said that "the battle lines are now drawn". It's probably this sort of people who want to bring on a Clash of Civilisations.

I find it odd that both my hard disks failed at the same time. Also, my father keeps commenting on how it would be cheaper to get a new computer than keep repairing the current one, and advised that we shouldn't pay for any new hardware this time around, yet accepted the offer of a new 40GB HDD ($230, bargained down to $220 including labour) from the shop.

I wonder how much data recovery would cost (not the ridiculous quote I got below).

The Fable Of The Keys - debunking the bit about Dvorak keyboards being more effective than QWERTY ones, and that QWERTY ones supposedly cause slower typing.

Skirt Trouble - A member of an Illinois school board was forced to apologize after commenting during a meeting on the length of women’s skirts. Timothy Knudsen was accused of telling speakers during a meeting of the Niles Township school board’s Finance Committee, "to keep your comments like a woman's skirt: long enough to cover the subject, but brief enough to keep me interested."

Oh gee. Someone thinks so highly of me.

"you're just gonna be one of those weird loser people whose greatest achievement was coming from rj"

Actually I think that all sorts of news gets my attention - the tudung in primary schools affair, or the car crashing into the MRT tracks would have/did get my attention too, so.

Flying off sunday afternoon ... bye bye till december!

Saturday, July 19, 2003

Gee.

D: has just gone missing.

Lucky I backed it up not long ago (on 6th July), so at most I lose my 400+ hours of mp3s (sob!), some pictures I've collected over the years, a journal entry, some movies I don't mind losing and some games you can't download anymore, but which I'll never play anyway. Nothing I can't afford to lose, or which is worth US$200-300 (?) recovering.

Ironically, this is the newer HDD which has spoilt after 3 years. The 5 year old one is still going strong.

A helpful source opines that "tho usually even when ur hd dies the bios will at least indicate it's there. so i guess u gotta check ur connections and tweak". Unfortunately, when I try to enter my BIOS, green lines appear on my screen.

gynaecomastia is where men grow boobs and other things (female hair pattern, female distribution of body fats etc) in response to hormone imbalances commonly caused by alcohol consumption causing liver cirrhosis interfering with steroid hormone metabolism (oestrogen etc). So drinking isn't so manly after all.

Brother in law on watching the HPF video:

"and how come rjc girls now saunter into class wearing untucked shirts and folded sleeves?"

So behind the times :)
Word of the day: "gynaecomastia"

Apparently word of my distress reached higher echelons of our command structure, as I found myself being talked to by my CSM. I was assured that RT is meant to train me, not to torture ("tekan") me. That may be true, but some people make it appear more of a torture than others, and in the heat of the moment, amidst the shouting and screwing, it is hard to remember the putative aim of RT. It's nice to be reminded of the present kinder, gentler, more caring (relatively, anyway) army. From next week, I will supposedly be moved to progressive training, so it won't be so much of a torture, and will actually be *realistic*, and thus more likely to produce results.

My CSM has made it her mission to help me and Christopher pass IPPT, and me to pass SOC - an admirable aim, but, I fear, doomed to failure. So on Tuesday she was running beside me, sans helmet, webbing, rifle, dummy magazines, waterbottles and toggle rope (yes I'm being pedantic here). She is a better motivator than my Ops Sergeant, but I could sense the disappointment in my "lack of effort", and see it in her eyes. I don't know how people judge effort, but to me, not collapsing or stopping totally already shows some modicum of effort. I could always push myself further, but I don't know where injury lies - the fastest 2.4km run I ever ran (15:16), I got injured.

I am supposed to feel a sense of accomplishment after running or RT, but instead I just feel drained, used and empty. Worse, it drains whatever reserves of determination and strenght (both physical and mental) that I have, and a night's rest - or indeed, a weekend's - rarely is enough to recharge me. The end result is that the constant runs are having a debilitating effect. I feel like Prometheus, chained to my rock by my PES Status, and having my liver pecked out by the eagle of RT/runs daily (or almost daily), only for it to regenerate the next day (since I don't get injured permanently). Pain is supposed to be in the mind, and thinking positive thoughts and psyching myself is supposed to help me make it. This is just self-deception. I suppose, if my family were gunned down bloodily (ala my Chinese essays), I could think positive thoughts and make myself believe that it was a good thing. Why can't I be like the people who fake slipped discs, who who take entrenching tools and maim themselves?

RT is evil. It made me so tired on Tuesday that I didn't book out :( I also realise that running more or less ruins the rest of my day, and the thought of a run later throws a dark cloud over the earlier part of my day. Some people don't feel right if they don't run. I don't feel right if I do. So running 4/6 times this last week was really depressing.

Word spreads. A friend told me that one day when he was the guard 3i/c, the guard commander told him about this "Corporal Gabriel" who had a page about army life. How, erm, cool is that? A regular specialist who reads my blog? I am amused. The same friend also supported me in "telling the truth about the SAF". I better watch out for the Men In Black now.

I am proud of the elves. They have initiative, and helped me process 397 recruits' dockets, even when I was not around to ask,

The planets were in an evil alignment on Monday. We had to send 8 people to Tengah to report sick, and of those, 2-3 were sent to NUH A&E. I only slept at 1:30am. But Benjamin only slept at 3:30am, so I got the better straw.

Our book in timing on Monday, Wednesday and Friday has been changed to an unearthly 10:30pm, with no compensation on other days. That will surely shock my brother in law - "We never had any of this '2330' nonsense. Always '2359'". Makes no sense to apply for off on any of those 3 days now.

The cookhouses no longer each cook the food campwide for an entire week. Now they take turns for each meal. I think someone realised that when 42SAR was providing the food, the number of chips dropped into the boxes was abysmally low, so they want to keep us guessing :)

To "improve [our] general knowledge", newspaper articles and pages torn out from "Shoulder To Shoulder - Our National Service Journal" (how that is supposed to help anyone, I don't know) have been placed beneath telk (is that how the plastic wrap is spelled?) at cookhouse tables. Admirable sentiments, but I wonder how often they'll update the quickly-stale news.

I hate my cookhouse's "lor-style" meat. The taste isn't so bad, but they always dump liberal quantities of Star Anise into the food, and I invariably bite on one, to my great discomfort :( Other than that particular gripe, contrary to what one might expect, I am actually a great deal less fussy about cookhouse food than many.

My Secret Garden is not so secret anymore - one day I walked in during lunchtime to find 5 people slouched on 2 of the 3 mattresses, listening to polyphonic ringtones (ugh). And at night, Bob likes to come down and sleep with me.

I wonder when we will be able to stop our SARS measures. The Powers That Be may be slow to move, but they are paranoid to the point of ridiculousness, and slow to end redundant and useless precautionary measures. If you have SARS, you will know - you won't have to wait until a temperature check weeds you out. Perhaps the only good this does is to weed out irresponsible people.

Bob went outfield and got so many bunk breaks that he didn't manage to finish the food he brought. And he still complained about going outfield. Bah.

I read an email saying that with immediate effect, PDAs are now legal in SAF camps if you don't put too-confidential information on it. Curiously, this was not published in the Routine Orders. I sense a conspiracy! Maybe I should call MSD to confirm.

For BMT in 42 SAR, they don't check all the recruits' field packs. They only spot check a few. Wah, so slack. :)

Ban Xiong's fake vegetarianism has been exposed and he now has to eat Meat. Aww.

A reservist told me that in his day (4 years ago), you got a day off for catching a rat. Wah (both for how long the rats have been there and for the incentive). In related news, I entered the pantry one night and one rat climbed up the water cooler pipe, and 3 scurried away from the fridge and into the cupboard. Only they were medium sized, and moved quite slowly. There are going to be more old, big rats soon. Shit.

Bob is more annoyed at my (and others) calling him that than I am at his calling me "Jiabao". Hee hee. It's quite a catchy name, really: "Bob". Bob also cannot figure out how to leave comments on Balderdash. Gah. Do I have to put: "Click here to leave a comment?".

Apparently the maximum punishment for going AWOL is 2 years of DB. So if you escape them for >2 years it might be worth it :)

Apparently Zaixiang told his trainees that he was from Poly. No one believes him. Haha.

My intense disgust with the SAR-vivor rap is such that I now have the perverse fantasy of transcribing it. That's if I can stop the urge to run away screaming when it appears on TV. "And I'm once again impressed by your general do-nothing/do-everything skills." - Tym. Apparently though, a CD featuring it will be on sale soon.

Apparently the reason CISCO is always seen with the Singapore Police is that they are the "National Auxiliary Police Force". Hrmph. Sometimes you see them more often than the real police. Maybe it's because out-sourcing is more efficient. They've already out-sourced so many things (eg SAF cookhouses to SFI, much transport to private bus operators) for greater efficiency - I reckon out-sourcing the whole SAF and the whole police force might bring surprising results! :)

Amidst the hand wringing, condolences and tributes to Laleh and Ladan Bijani, I must note that, oddly, the arguments for their undergoing the operation were very similar to those used by Euthanasia enthusiasts. So why the disparate responses to the two? The twins showed courage to undergo the operation, but does living a harder life not require greater courage? They wanted to live in dignity - terminally ill patients in pain want to *die* with dignity.

It is sad that Malaysia is trying to kill off dialects too now, by dubbing serials in Mandarin. Killing off dialects will kill a part of the Chinese culture, and reduce cultural richness and diversity, all in the name of crass economic considerations of doubtful efficacy.

Perhaps the most side-splitting scene seen in Chemistry so far: Rachel's mother's line dancing pals dancing as a "get well" gesture. My shrieks of combined outrage and delight must have been audible from the next building.

Nok2Phone never imports MIDIs perfectly, and I always have to tweak the result. Grr.

Some people insist on taking the moral high ground, and are "appalled that there is going to be a gay event, the Nation.03 party, on National Day at Sentosa, modelled after the gay Mardi Gras parade of Sydney". They argue that "Singapore society [does not condone] public display of homosexuality at a venue associated with family entertainment", that "Holding such a party on National Day is also an insult to Singapore's independence anniversary", and that "the Nation.03 party glamorises the homosexual lifestyle, something which runs counter to the moral values of most Singaporeans". If people want to be so conservative, they can contemplate the revulsion that many would feel if we were just to substitute the words "malay", "buddhist", "female", "brunette" or even "anorexic" or "short" for "gay". Giving females the vote is immoral! Jews are inhuman!

At the same time, it is sad that everything - Remaking Singapore, the new tolerance for gays - is painted as an economic measure. Perhaps this is a sop to conservatives who will not otherwise be dissuaded, but it is still lamentable that they have to resort to such measures.

Inspiration that came to mind while watching Andrew clothes-shop for 2 hours:

Ban Xiong is incredibly enamored of his $50 Nike Lycra shirt and keeps wearing it. Or maybe it's *because* it was $50 that he is so incredibly taken with it.

Command and Conquer: Tiberian Sun was selling at $64 in Courts Suntec City. Considering it's been 4 years since its release in the later half of 1999, that is such a ripoff.

I tried I Can't Believe It's Yogurt's Non-fat Cheesecake Soft-serve today. Very rich and realistic taste, but I don't want to know what sort of chemicals go into it.

I only saw one person - an upper primary boy - wearing a shirt from Giordano's "Me" line today. I swear, there was a time when you couldn't go out without seeing at least 5 people wearing shirts from that line. So much for the celebration of individualism and uniqueness.

I actually bought clothing for myself today. Wah. And it wasn't my normal type of shoddy, kiam sap clothing. Still being boring though, and not liking funky clothes like Andrew, I settled for a plain cyan shirt from Export Fashion. Its defect was worse than what you usually get, but it was a good price ($17.50), was my size and was soft. My mother was shocked when I pointed out the small hole at the back - apparently she doesn't understand the concept behind how they can let you buy brand-name quality apparel, albeit with the labels ripped out or defaced, at low prices.

The people who sell pirated VCDs at Tiong Bahru Plaza were back there again today. Uncharacteristically, the table was almost totally filled with tasteless XXX (not they produce any other sort, knowing their audience) VCDs today. I wonder what happens if you shoplift from shops selling pirated VCDs / software / pornographic VCDs. They surely can't call the cops on you. Maybe they are in cahoots with the Ah Longs (loansharks).

Student's ticking-off goes from RJC to Net

'Counselling' for teacher whose tirade in class is recorded secretly and posted online; college investigating incident

By Sandra Davie

WHEN a Raffles Junior College teacher hauled up a student and gave him a thorough ticking-off, she did not know that another student was recording it all on video.

(picture) The teacher tears the student's homework, as seen in this video-grab sequence.

He then posted the three-minute video clip on the Internet.

It shows the General Paper teacher telling a male student his homework was 'outdated and irrelevant' and calling him a 'sly, crafty, old rat'.

When he tries to respond, she tells him: 'You are trying to cover up your insolence, your defiance, your laziness, your apathy, your lethargy and your bad attitude.'

She then tears his homework in two.

The boy who captured it all used a personal digital assistant with a built-in-camera. Calling himself 'bw', he put the videoclip on one website, but over the past month, it has been copied onto several others frequented by students.

After The Straits Times called the school, principal Winston Hodge showed the teacher the videoclip. She is not being named here at the school's request.

Mr Hodge said he spoke to the boy with the camera and his parents yesterday. The boy was 'apologetic' and said he regretted his action.

The school was still investigating, Mr Hodge said.

The Internet posting attracted 12 pages of comments on just one website [Ed: Read the SPUG forums for more views on this issue], including some from students criticising the RJC student for recording the incident secretly.

Responding online, he said the teacher should not have 'crucified' the student in front of the class. He said that the boy being scolded was from China and Chinese nationals tended to be weak in General Paper.

He claimed that he went public with his recording to find out what other students thought, not to entertain people or humiliate the teacher.

His principal yesterday appeared to agree with him that the teacher might have gone overboard and said that she had been 'counselled'.

'In the course of a teacher's work, there are times when there is a need to chastise students for tardy work and attitude,' Mr Hodge said.

'I believe this is what happened here, although based on the video, the teacher did lose her temper and went beyond what was necessary.'

RJC students are allowed to use cellphones and palmtops in school, but not in the library, classrooms, laboratories or lecture theatres.

'Responsible use also means requesting permission of the people being photographed or videotaped rather than to do it without them being aware,' said Mr Hodge.

An Education Ministry spokesman confirmed that schools are free to set the rules on the use of cellphones and palmtops by students.

But teachers who were told about the RJC incident told The Straits Times it was time the ministry imposed a ban.

Said an RJC teacher who declined to be named: 'The policy needed a rethink now that electronic devices have advanced to the point that students can intrude into your privacy.

Defending her colleague, she added: 'A teacher has every right to scold a student if he is handing in copied work or sub-standard work.'

Another junior college teacher said: 'Teachers are already under a lot of stress. And now we have students with snooping devices trying to catch them off-guard.'

I suppose it was inevitable, in this age of fast internet transmission, that the press would get wind of this. I didn't expect it to be blown up so greatly, and to make Page 3 news, though. I suppose the New Paper will be doing a story in greater depth soon.

With my shocking, immoral, hippy-libertarian credentials, it will come as no surprise to many that I largely condone, or at least am ambivalent, about this whole matter. If you want to look at it from the "mature" point of view that people love to take, one has to take responsibility for one's actions. If you dare to call a student a "sly, crafty old rat" and tear up his homework in front of a class, you should dare to call him one in front of the whole world. Oddly enough, this taking of responsibility does not seem to apply often when the Powers That Be are concerned.

Granted, teachers do not like scolding students, but sometimes they go overboard. Perhaps this incident might act as a sort of check. Granted, too, that teachers are due their share of privacy. While the video wasn't of her at her cubicle, hard at work over her next nature poem, relaxing at home or even showering (eeks!), this does constitute an invasion of her privacy. At the same time, though, students also have their dignity. Is it not hurtful to be told that you are "trying to cover up your insolence, your defiance, your laziness, your apathy, your lethargy and your bad attitude"? Not knowing the details of the situation, though knowing something of the teacher, I cannot comment, but this is a rebuke of a great magnitude, and is not very professional of an experienced teacher. Further, I am given to believe that this was most assuredly -not- an isolated incident. Also, a classroom is already a semi-private setting. As a poster on the SPUG forum put it:

"if what teachers do in the classroom is "private"... then why bother to come to class at all? the teacher would probably be better off at her grandfather's house, where he/she can do whatever he/she wants in total "privacy". similarly, teachers should not correct students if they see them doing something wrong, as they would be invading the student's "privacy". isn't that lovely."

People are bound to see the posting of this video as a form of revenge taken upon a disliked teacher by a vengeful student. While I have never been under Ho Poh Fun, I get the impression that she is insufferable, and a quick search will reveal that non-professional/academic references to her are invariably distasteful. At least we can take comfort in the fact that there is a tacit admission that Ms Ho might have gone overboard.

As someone else has put it so eloquently in the aforementioned forum, so sparing me the effort of composing a similar paragraph: "having read the article in today's papers about the incident, i can only say that i'm quite disgusted by the slant towards protecting the teacher as i feel that moe and the government should be open, honest and transparent (just like they say in the social studies textbook) about the incident... instead of trying to cover up and throw their weight around trying to cover up things when their dirty laundry gets discovered. i think singaporeans would have a bit more respect for the education system if they at least knew what was really going on behind it (especially with regard to the dirty laundry bit), rather than having all this lovely, utopic information fed to them from little leaflets with the MOE logo. i'm sure that with so many intelligent and mature people in the society, such frank and possibly stark information should not hurt.

the most ridiculous part was the one where a "fellow jc teacher said" that teachers were already under a lot of stress so students should stop secretly recording all these "off-guard" moments to add to their stress. goodness, imagine what school would be like if teachers simply took out their own "stress" (which i can assure you is exponentially less than the stress placed on today's students) on students and simply dismiss these as "off-guard". of course there will be "off-guard" moments; i'm simply saying that we should not close an eye to it and let it pass. if we do, it conversely would mean that students are entitled to rage, storm, tear up their teachers' and classmates' work and probably stomp on their desks while they were at it, just because they were "off-guard" and "under stress" (since teachers are allowed to rage, storm and tear up students' homework when they are "off-guard" and "under stress"). how lovely. i wish the teacher in question a ball of a time "de-stressing" together with her students and i sincerely hopes she is teaching in a jc where the students are all the "ah-beng" kind and will teach a good sharp lesson in professional ethics 101. if we can't weed out this sort of "i'll scratch your back if you scratch mine" kind of thing, students will have to bear the brunt of all this unprofessionalism. and i'm sure that no 17 or 18 year old wants that."

I think PDAs are going to be banned soon. Looks like they didn't learn their lessons from me and my quotes (though a piece of paper would have been just as, if not more effective, though having admittedly less panache) :)

Meanwhile, Mr Qingru had the impression that it was a video of a RJC teacher screwing a girl that was making the rounds. I suppose when he heard me say "RJC teacher" and "screwing a student", he immediately assumed that I was referring to the carnal type of screwing. *sputter* And I was wondering why he was so interested.

Someone asked why it wasn't Yaodong? :) Other comments (highlight to read - if you are easily offended, as I know many of you are, you should skip this portion): "but she's a kind old lady . ive never never seen her this mad", "i hope u had nothing to do with it.." (am I that notorious?), "the teacher deserved it.", "from a relief teacher's point of view...i can see how some teachers can really lose it at times...", "ouch. i think she was very cruel", "man! she did [deserve it]... what a bitch.... now everyone's gonna think rj students are terrorised by teachers like those. she could eat a few for bfast!", "[Me: she has a long track record] maybe that's why she was targeted..hiayh". Others feel she deserved it.

its precisely cos u "know", or rather, think/believe u know... abt the person and circumstances... that you're biased =P u lack distance from the event and the personalities...

he got to play the "heroic vigilant", and is probly piss-proud of his little self now. not to mention blowing it up on the net. if he were a little older n wiser, he could have lodged a private complaint with Mr. Hodge. but no no no, he has to go and make a scene like some toddler in a supermarket on the other hand Ms Ho shouldnt have gotten so full of herself either

Me: if you just complain, maybe they talk to her. or observe her and she puts on an act but they don't know what she does. no proof

well now uy got proof. the real challenge is showing enough maturity to know what to do with the proof and there the student is at fault. cos he went and did something rash that he's now regretting

Me : so he should have showed the proof to the principal?

yup that's what i meant by "launch a complaint" at least try the official channels before acting smart and shaming everybody including himself remotely connected to RJ... many tragedies happen because one "just wants to show off to friends"...

Me: I don't think it was a "show off" kind of thing

hmm... then, a "righteous exposure" kind of thingy?

Me: possibly. more of a "see what ms ho has done now!"

sounds like the pharisees who caught the woman in adultery and brought her to Jesus... i'm not greatly impressed

Me: *shrug* ahh, people have advanced in their stunts since my day *wistful*

ah well but JC students... arent very mature. oh yeah i'm sure they have... the wonders of technology =P in any case, what's doen cannot be undone...

Hi im back in singapore!

On the hoo-hah surrounding the HPF video:

"You are all playing too much at Deep Throat scenarios."
SOC Remedial Training (RT) has started, and it is weighing heavily on me. The rundown, the terrifying obstacles, the exhaustion, the shouting and more are all getting to me. People keep saying that it's all in the mind, that SOC is all mental, and that one can do anything if one puts one's mind to it. If that is the case, then I think I had better try flying by jumping off the 4th floor, and ascribing my failure to soar aloft to a lack of willpower. People also say that once you have done something, you will be able to do it again. But then, things can never be used indefinitely, as wear and tear will result in them, ultimately giving way one day. The Final Solution is attractive, but why let the slave drivers take from you more than they have to? What's the point of injuring yourself for the SAF, and especially to boost some unimportant numbers which will be reset the next year?

Adding to my worries has been work. Now is a bad time to be the Docu I/C - the recruits report sick in swarms, and further, I have a lot of referrals to book everyday. I've been doing overtime everyday the past week (and on Friday the previous week too), just to keep my backlog of work still-manageable - a task made ever more onerous by the time and energy taken up by concurrent training and remedial training. What's more, I have the feeling that I am less than competent. I think I'm going mad. Maybe I should have been like Johann and gone mad right at the start - during BMT.

With the combination of these 2 major headaches (RT and work), a whole host of problems-normally-minor-but-suddenly-major-due-to-stress and the cancellation of our company's nights off for the week due to dirty weapons, I just broke down. 3 times in the course of the week, I was reduced to a quivering, quavering, whimpering blob, the worst episode being after the SOC RT where I went to hide in a laundrette, and the recruits probably thought that the cries coming from inside were from the ghosts that haunt the place. I don't think I've collapsed so completely in these 19 months, not even in the first days of BMT (where I cried often, but softly and discretely), nor on the day I booked in after Chinese New Year last year, when a certain unfortunate thing happened to me.

I feel slightly better after seeing my MO and Senior Medic, but I don't know if I will fall apart during the next SOC RT. If worse comes to worst, I can always call the much-talked-about-but-never-used SAF hotline, or declare myself psychiatric. Luckily, I will be getting a Little Elf or two (to my Santa) to help me with work (yeh!), so I can concentrate on running and RT (...). Incidentally, Lenny kindly offered to help me do some of my work on one day, seeing how stressed I was. He also commented that I'd become a great deal less cheery this week, so I guess the stress was really taking its toll on me.

In their latest act of gross, flagrant and baffling stupidity, the Powers That Be have confiscated our extra pillows. That would not be so bad, except that they also took my clearly marked non-SAF pillow, which I had brought from home. What happened next defies belief - they threw the extra pillows away. I am really at a loss for words at the sheer mindlessness of it all. Could it be that, in a vindictive rage, they are just trying to spite us all? But then, making our lives more miserable *is* part of their job description.

This week, we marked SAF day with an observance parade. Meanwhile, I was also commemorating this special day, by re-dedicating myself against the SAF and most of what it stands for - slavery, sadism, disregard for the individual, bullying, anger, stupidity, lust, acting, mindlessness and much more. "Give me liberty or give me death" - Patrick Henry, March 23, 1775. Unfortunately, there are fates worse than death for 2 1/2 year soldiers, and I, being the craven that I am, have not courage such as the Jehovah's Witnesses possess to face them. If only I had been born female, I would not have had to betray my principles by accepting my conscription. Some people like to dress National Slavery in the clothes of honour, duty and patriotism ("Doing NS is a duty and an honour"), but just like the Emperor's New Clothes, these are all illusory. If it is really such an honour, why is the alternative prison, and why do so many loathe it? If there is any honour in it at all, it is the honour accorded to the sacrificial victim, who is feted by all, while everyone secretly rejoices that they were not the one chosen to be sacrificed to the god of the volcano.

We now have our very own Medical Centre puppy, adopted by Max from some litter. Maybe it can help us catch the rats :)

It's not fair. Someone is as fat as I, yet he can wear one set of uniform for the entire week, and though there are white streaks of dried sweat on the back by week's end, it does not stink!

The regimentation we are facing is going up by the day, in tandem with that faced by the recruits. I wonder how much more we can take.

It's really quite a pain to book medical appointments for people at Alexandra Hospital. For some reason, AH wants to know the patients' dates of birth and addresses - maybe they send out birthday cards to their patients every year or something.. The other hospitals don't seem to ask for such silly details, only for contact numbers. Or maybe the other hospitals have linked networks to pool patient information.

The HDB has cancelled its annual cleanest estate competition as it realised that residents were not enthusiastic about it, and the competition was really between the cleaners of the estates. This decision is most wise, and I applaud it. By the same token, the SAF's Best Unit Competition should be scrapped too, as its results just depend on how hard each unit's commanders (and S3 department, especially) manage to push their men, and to play with the system (see: 1st Commandos Battalion). If you ask the NSFs, I'm sure that you'll find that more then 95% do not care whether they are the top combat unit or the last combat unit.

[continued below]
[continued from above]

In the midst of my troubles, some people were still trying to convert me:

- "Why don't you pray - you've nothing to lose". Maybe I (and they) should try praying to Amon-Ra instead - the currently worshipped gods are obviously ineffective : just look at what happened to the dreams and prayers for world peace, so we've nothing to lose by praying to Amon-Ra too!
- "You deserve it." I was perplexed by this. Presumably this is what a "loving" god does to people.
- "Who knows, it may turn out to be good.". I should try getting knocked down by a car. In a way, that would turn out to be good as well.

So my conclusion, in the end, was that when people start talking about their gods, it's time to stop listening, for they have run out of ideas on how to help you with your problem.

It seems that whenever Christians are stressed, it is because their god is "testing" them, or "strengthening" them, and it is all part of the "plan". Conveniently, though, when non-believers are similarly stressed, it is because they have "turned away from god" and have "no peace" because they don't "know god". What dishonest logic.

Religious people always complain when their religious beliefs are offended, but how come no one bothers about the religious beliefs (or lack thereof) or non-theists? Bah. Somehow all this brings to mind Chinx's account of how some well-meaning but still evil people gave this guy a christian burial when he died - something tantamount to sacrilege of the dead. Since he doesn't have permalinks, I'll just reproduce most of the post below (^__^ - normal smilies don't fit well in circular brackets):

"My neighbour died recently.

No, this is *not* going to be a depressing piece. Don't run away yet, y'all. However. What follows is also perhaps the most honest and blunt piece I've written for a while. Sensitive folks will want to avoid this.

Yes, my neighbour died recently. How recently? I don't know. I only knew he died when I saw the wake, and his huge photo staring out at me.

Yes yes, we're horrible neighbours. Yes, yes, we're not close to our neighbours at all, unless you count physical distances. Yes yes. That's not the point of this rant. Shush.

So, as I'm writing this, our neighbours have just finished singing a joyous hymn of praise to our dear lored gawd. Now, this is what really gets me going. See, I may not have known my neighbours very well, but I knew one thing for sure about him- he was not a Christian.

This isn't the 1st time I've seen it happen either. About 2 years ago, an uncle of mine died, well before his time. Our family (with the notable exception of cold-hearted bastard Stranger) reeled from the impact, and was sent into deep mourning. He was well-liked by all, and his death certainly came as a shock to us all. He was, however also not a Christian, but his siblings saw fit to bury him with a Christian ceremony.

This isn't something I take lightly. A funeral is a chance to honour the deceased, to remember the great things that he did, to weep at his passing, and to bid him goodbye. It is NOT an occassion to force your religious beliefs upon him.

I mean, my gawd, he had his entire life to decide if he believed in your gawd or not. If he didn't, why make it as though he accepted it with his last passing breath? Why force YOUR beliefs on him now when he can't fight back? You think you're doing him a favour? You think you're helping him see the light as the darkness claims claims his mortal spark? You think you're saving his bloody soul by singing a few paltry songs while his corpse lays stiff and frozen?

Screw you. Screw you for clothing him upon his death in robes he refused to wear in life. Screw you for turning his death into a vehicle for your preaching. Screw you - you don't say goodbye to someone by corrupting his image. You don't force an 80 year olde grandmother who's just outlived her eldest son to wonder why there's a man from the church to speak at his funeral. You don't make her wonder, as she's sitting there wiping her tears, her heart about to give way, what exactly they're saying about her son when she doesn't speak a word of the language you're praising your gawd with.

Screw you."

"We are born this way and they are born that way, but they are like you and me" - PM Goh on gays. I'm quite impressed.

Coca-Cola Light with Lemon is interesting. I think they're trying to beat Pepsi at their own game.
