Following up on the tip, we visited numerous publicly funded shelters in San Francisco, and spoke to employees and residents about their policies, sometimes through a translator. We discovered not only that the shelters were housing illegal immigrants but also that they were apparently housing a population of male-to-female “transgender” illegal aliens, who had hoped to obtain “gender-affirming care.” And, to our shock, state and local governments apparently are providing it... For background: in LA, thieves have been stripping streetlights of their electrical wiring and selling it for scrap. It is amazingly destructive: for every $1 of wire they sell, the city has to spend $100-$1000 on repairs. Literally, the thief might make a couple hundred bucks, and the city has to spend six figures. (Oh and the streetlights are out, which may lead to traffic accidents or other problems.) It’s an extremely antisocial crime. Astoundingly, the city seems unwilling to do something about this. A guy invented a better way to lock down streetlights — they didn’t want it. The idea of “look for the thieves and put them in jail” has been unpopular for reasons unclear to me. Proposed solutions, like making scrap yards record who sold them copper wiring, seem ineffective. The most cynical explanation for this is that the incentives lead to crime: the money spent on repairs is primarily spent on local union labor. For them, this is great. There’s a whole industry for servicing these problems. And the city gets to say that it is working on fixing the issues. Up to some limit, the more of these issues, the better. I'd like to believe California can be saved from the Left. But it may be too late - "California’s demographic profile is increasingly bad for Republicans. The state has been consistently losing its Anglo population, as well as the middle class, particularly families of all ethnicities, to Texas, Arizona, and Nevada. Those most likely to stay, notes the Public Policy Institute, tend to be young and often underpaid professionals, the very class that elected New York mayor Mamdani, public workers and their wards. Long gone are the days when California was a job-producing machine in everything from manufacturing to logistics as well as tech. These constituencies were the ones who cared most about brutal income taxes, the nation’s highest unemployment (as well as youth unemployment), unaffordable housing, poor roads, mediocre schools and ever fewer good jobs. Increasingly, these constituencies and the companies they work for are just choosing to leave. In the governor’s race, Hilton will also be up against the full power of current governor Gavin Newsom’s political machine, largely financed by public unions and Left-leaning oligarchs. Shawn Steel, the state’s irrepressible GOP National Committeeman, told me that Hilton’s financial resources are paltry compared to what his thoroughly mediocre opponent, former Biden cabinet member Xavier Becerra, will be able to draw on... There is a widespread sense of decline. The Quality of Life Index, a metric compiled by UCLA’s Luskin School of Public Affairs, has hit the lowest point in a decade. The reasons are numerous: an economy that ranks among the worst in urban America, with the highest level of poverty among the biggest American cities. And this in a city that suffers America’s highest housing costs... In the future, the state’s Department of Finance predicts no population growth in sight, with a reduction of 1.7 million people by 2060... The last Republican mayor of LA, the highly effective Richard Riordan, elected in 1993 and re-elected by a wide margin four years later, was backed by a still effective civic and business establishment. That establishment has largely disintegrated. “We have no business leaders anymore, just special interests,” suggests Nick Patsaouras, a long-time architect of infrastructure improvements made in the 1980s and 1990s. “Our city is in a coma.”"
