Must watch: Better ‘a beggar here than an emperor there’ — life after Hong Kong, and the struggle to resettle - "“A lot of things are not up to you. Everyone wants to marry actor Daniel Wu, but most of us don’t get to.”...   A viewer also offered some context for the “candid discussion” of dying and divorce. “(It’s) a very typical scene of Hong Kong married life,” wrote YouTube user, eggsplash."

Singapore, Britain must not appear imperialist to China - "With a large British naval force scheduled to pass through Singapore to enter the South China Sea in May, the British must deploy their naval force in a way that will not appear as imperialist posturing against China. If the Chinese leaders perceive this British naval group, which includes the aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth, as reviving gunboat diplomacy in the tradition of the bygone British empire, Singapore risks suffering collateral damage for hosting this British force. If the British fleet provokes China, the Chinese government may possibly find ways to punish Singapore"
To China shills, anyone who doesn't roll over is provoking China. The South China Sea belongs to China and anyway who sails past the nine-dash line is an imperialist!

REVEALED: China's Plan to Censor The Whole Internet. - "Chinese state-owned technology firm Huawei recently unveiled their own proposal to replace TCP/IP. Called New IP, this standard is designed to make communication more efficient, allowing for faster internet connections for smartphones and web-connected devices such as light bulbs and self-driving cars.  But the new proposal has a darker side.  The first red flag in the New IP proposal is a built-in kill switch that can be used to cut off websites or users that are engaging in bad behavior."

The faces China never intended us to see. by Best of Today | Podchaser - "‘We found multiple instances where the data or the photos in the hacked files could be shown to match with real people. Also contained in the spreadsheets are lists of phone numbers for police officers, who work in the camps, or in legal offices and police stations.’

‘Many of them didn't pick up when our team called… but some did’

‘In addition to those sent to the camps thousands more have been given long prison terms for ordinary everyday expressions of Islamic faith. Thread by @ZhugeEX on Thread Reader App – Thread Reader App - "Let's talk about a controversial topic in the world of video games.  Chinese games dev Paper Games just shut down its game, Shining Nikki, in Korea after controversy erupted between Chinese and Korean players... It's no secret that China has a strict regulatory environment for games. There are restrictions that developers have to impose on their own games in order to release them in China... This is a top down approach to game censorship, but it's worth noting that there is also a bottom up approach too  Which is to say Chinese game companies also self censor themselves + Chinese players may demand changes... the game is a simulation RPG with dressing up elements, which is to say a key part of the game is customising your character with outfits and such.  A Hanbok, Korean traditional clothing pack was released in the game.  Some gamers in China took offense to the DLC as they complained that some of the traditional clothes were in fact Chinese (Ming Dynasty era) and not Korean as claimed  This infuriated some gamers in Korea who claimed China was trying to steal Korean traditional culture This controversy was already going on outside of the game, due to a different comic book controversy, and the release of this DLC only exacerbated the situation.  Ultimately this led to boycotts from both sides, with review bombing of the game and insults to the devs / players This controversy got so big that even the Chinese Academy of History issued a notice saying that the clothing should be considered traditionally Chinese, which only led to further boycotts and complaints.  Paper Games did address this by saying it would respect Chinese culture.  However, many in China found this response to be lacking and claimed the devs were afraid to anger Korean players.  Ultimately the devs pulled the DLC and refunded users. They also went one step further and censored / banned players in Korea who insulted them / China. In Korea this caused further outcry. In China people were still complaining about the issue and that the devs had not addressed the core issue of the clothing being traditionally Chinese. This spawned multiple media articles.  Yes, it turns out people care about this a lot...  It is a shame that it got to this point, but the outcome is indicative of the approach Chinese game companies take to satisfy their home market  This wasn't a top down order, it was a driven from the bottom up and led to a tangible outcome, with the game being shut down in Korea Of course these controversies are nothing new for people who are aware of the Blitzchung incident, the Devotion incident and the recent hololive incidents.  But it shows the disconnect between how Chinese regulators and players view games, and how those outside China view games."

China’s Missing Million - "Over the winter of 2022-23, one million Chinese people died from Covid-19—or so estimates now suggest. This figure would indicate that China experienced as many deaths from the virus in two months as the United States did in three years... Grappling with China’s “missing million” involves, above all, contending with the realization that President Xi Jinping’s iron implementation of Zero-Covid was a failure of colossal proportions. Civil liberties were severely curtailed in unending lockdowns, and China’s economy harmed to the tune of billions of dollars, in the name of a “people’s war” against a “devil virus,” as per the president’s repeated exhortations. This war was to be furious and unrelenting. Then suddenly it was abandoned, after November’s popular protests (dubbed the White Paper Revolution) gave Xi bad dreams of insurrection. Those people whose lives had supposedly been spared by the lockdowns lost their lives anyway, in accelerated fashion... Xi’s beloved lockdown policy had helped create a nation largely unprotected by natural immunity: “more vulnerable,” writes academic Yanzhong Huang, “than almost any other population on Earth.” Poor natural immunity, low vaccination rates, the mid-winter cold—these were the ripe circumstances into which SARS-CoV-2 was suddenly released. Faced with none of the usual obstacles, the virus was able to tear through China. On the ground, reporters found chaotic scenes. No surge capacity measures had been implemented at hospitals, because no warnings had been given. Emergency rooms were overwhelmed, patients sprawled on floors, ambulances were turned away.  The unchecked spread of Covid augured a hotbed of new strains. Sure enough, Xu Wenbo—head of the virus control institute at the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CCDC)—soon admitted that a worrying number of new Omicron sublineages had been detected. Xi Jinping’s policies had, effectively, created a genuine threat to the rest of the world. Happily, no extra-lethal strain has so far emerged from China’s enormous experimental cauldron. But within China, many were still dying. So how many? Is the million-strong estimate reliable?... China’s hospitals swelled with the dying, but only in-patients who had taken a test and gained a positive result were registered as Covid-19 deaths. Deaths outside hospital did not count; in the early stages of reopening, hospital deaths involving no respiratory failure did not count either.  These were the means by which the Party would avoid the embarrassment of a truly astronomical fatality figure. And so we have no hope of a reliable statistic for the nation... No one wants to know. The entire three-year nightmare is being assigned to history: Covid-19, Zero-Covid, the chaos of reopening—all of it. Incredible as it may seem, my contacts in China tell me that people have already begun to forget. In the face of this series of catastrophes—a years-long clampdown on civil liberties on a national scale, followed by a blistering Covid wave—the CCP has responded by… declaring victory... In terms of opacity, the CCP’s scope really is sweeping. There is, for instance, no nationwide figure for average home prices (a ploy by the CCP to avert a bubble) and no reliable estimate as to China’s true population (in 2017, for instance, a fresh 14 million citizens abruptly materialized in the official count). The net result of the data-juking is that the average Chinese citizen is grossly misinformed about events in China. This is true in the best of times, let alone during a crisis.   This chronic opacity presents problems for all of us. China is no longer a distant concern. In a globalized world, we’re all jostling together in a crowded room; it is almost as if we could reach out and touch people who live on the other side of the planet. And so mistakes that occur in China quickly become everyone else’s business. We learned this, very dramatically, in 2020—or should have.   Three years on, the CCP is the same catastrophic mix of secrecy, paranoia, huge power, and huge incompetence. There were many lessons that could have been learned from Covid—the need for transparency predominant among them. The CCP took in none of those. Instead, China is back to where it started with the first Covid wave: obfuscation and a death toll that we can only guess at."

China imposes de facto ban on Japanese seafood imports amid anger over Fukushima water release plan - "the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) approved Japan’s plan to release the water, saying it met international standards and that the radiation impact on people and the environment could be considered negligible"

Chinese N-plants Releasing Water Containing Tritium at Levels 6.5 Times Higher than Planned Fukushima Discharge - "Chinese nuclear power plants have been releasing into the ocean water containing tritium at levels up to 6.5 times higher than the annual amount scheduled to be released from Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings, Inc.’s Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant, according to a document the Japanese government compiled for other countries ahead of TEPCO’s discharge.  TEPCO plans to start discharging treated water as early as this summer.  Beijing has strongly opposed the plan, waging a campaign via state media, even though some Chinese nuclear power plants are discharging levels of tritium higher than the amount TEPCO plans to release."
There's a good comparison of Hongyanhe, Qinshan, Ningde, Yangjiang and Fukushima's radiation levels

Ambassadors, opposition denounce 'shameful' Liberal posture toward China following Taiwan report - "Former ambassadors and opposition members of Parliament called the Liberal government’s posture toward China a “disgrace” and “shameful” following a media report that said government officials had sought to block the president of Taiwan from receiving an award in Canada. According to a report by Politico, federal government officials had threatened to pull funding to the Halifax International Security Forum if it awarded its John McCain Prize for Leadership in Public Service to Tsai Ing-wen, the president of Taiwan. The report attributed the Liberal decision to a fear of offending the Communist Party of China, which has for decades sought to reclaim Taiwanese territory as its own...   David Mulroney, another former Canadian ambassador to China, called the report a “national disgrace” on Twitter Monday. “Canada’s Feminist Foreign Policy has no room for one of the most courageous, principled, and seriously threatened women on the planet,” he said."
Clearly nothing to do with why they refuse to publicly investigate Chinese election interference

Analysis: Xi Jinping's path to greater power goes through Taiwan - Nikkei Asia - "Xi did not clinch his ultimate goal of staying leader for life -- despite stacking the top leadership with his allies and acquiring ultimate power. Foreign companies must now worry if an armed unification of Taiwan will become an option to realize that final goal... Xi has shown that he is perfectly fine with ignoring economic rationality in pursuing "common prosperity." The leader seems unfazed by the economic slump his policies have brought about. His thick-skin approach has people wondering if he will be just as irrational in security policy and reach for the Taiwan option... In a report to last month's national congress on Oct. 16, Xi declared that China "will never promise to renounce the use of force" against Taiwan. It was the first time he had referred to the use of force in a report to a party congress... Xi changed direction in April when he proposed a Global Security Initiative during a keynote speech delivered via video to the opening ceremony of the annual conference of the Boao Forum for Asia in Hainan Province. The grandiose proposal, encompassing the entire world, is reminiscent of ancient Chinese empires that stretched out over the eastern half of Eurasia, with tributary states reaching into present-day Thailand and India. Xi's so-called security initiative is also closely related to a strategy of gradually spreading Chinese-style modernization -- which was emphasized at the party congress -- as a development model for the rest of the world."

Taiwan should destroy chip infrastructure if China invades: paper - Nikkei Asia - "Samsung, based in U.S. ally South Korea, would be the only alternative for cutting-edge designs. If TSMC went offline, "China's high-tech industries would be immobilized at precisely the same time the nation was embroiled in a massive war effort," the authors note. "Even when the formal war ended, the economic costs would persist for years," the paper suggests, adding that such a scenario could hurt the legitimacy of the Chinese Communist Party... The People's Liberation Army's goal for a successful invasion is 14 hours, a Chinese analyst with connections in the PLA Navy told the authors, while the PLA projects the U.S. and Japan to need 24 hours to respond."

Why Wagner revolt is such a nightmare to Xi Jinping - Nikkei Asia - "There is no doubt that Beijing was shaken by the uprising, at least initially. The Chinese government kept mum about the mutiny, launched on June 23 by mercenary chief Yevgeny Prigozhin, until the night of June 25, when it became clear that Prigozhin had stopped his advance toward Moscow. China's foreign ministry then issued a statement supporting stability in Russia. It seems that Chinese leaders continued to discuss how to engage with Russia following the rebellion. Eventually, Beijing decided to maintain and deepen the country's military cooperation with Russia... One lesson Xi may have gleaned from Russia's aggression is that an invasion of Taiwan would be disastrous unless it can secure an overwhelming victory in a very short time. It is, of course, hard to imagine an armed insurrection like Wagner's in China, which is tightly controlled by the Communist Party with extensive use of surveillance networks. But the fact that Russia came close to civil war must be very unnerving to Xi.

Hong Kong braces for a court ruling that could spell the beginning of the end of its open internet - "The city government applied in June for a court order to prohibit people from broadcasting or distributing Glory to Hong Kong, arguing that the song contains a slogan that amounts to a call for secession—one of four offenses outlawed under the sweeping National Security Law imposed by Beijing in 2020... For Hong Kong residents, a larger concern is that the city’s censorship efforts will not end with the song. “It is not the first time and it won't be the last,” says Kwong Chung Ching, a digital rights activist and Hong Kong campaigns coordinator at the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China, an international legislative coalition aimed at countering China's influence. According to Google’s latest transparency report, it received requests from the Hong Kong government to remove 183 items—mostly from YouTube—in the second half of 2022, including 55 related to national security. It did not take action on nearly half of the takedown requests, including links to children’s books that a court has deemed seditious. A court-ordered injunction could embolden the government to expand its effort to censor comments and speech deemed a threat to national security. “This is ringing an alarm bell for a lot of the online service providers in Hong Kong. They might be subjected to content moderation coming directly from the government,” Kwong says. There are already signs that Hong Kong authorities are stepping up their control over information flow both online and offline. A small but growing list of websites, including an online museum commemorating the Tiananmen Square crackdown, has been blocked by local telecom networks in recent years. Authorities have charged ordinary social media users—from a 23-year-old student studying in Japan to a 48-year-old housewife—with sedition over their online comments. Books by prominent democracy advocates disappeared from public libraries and a new channel was recently established for residents to report titles that could endanger national security. A new threat to Hong Kong’s internet freedom looms on the horizon: the upcoming enactment of Article 23 of the Basic Law, the city’s own security law. The city’s security chief pledged to “plug loopholes” in the internet and establish online patrols to identify messages and acts of “soft resistance” under the new legislation."

China Will Miss American Reporters When They’re Gone | Foreign Affairs - "American reporters have played a key role in telling China’s story and encouraging it to modernize, not just over the past 50 years but over the past 150... over the past few decades in particular, China has thrived when it has proved responsive to stories that policymakers might otherwise have ignored, and suffered, often catastrophically, when those developments have been suppressed. Given the tight constraints on Chinese reporters, the foreign press corps has been integral to bringing stories to light. Think of the reporting that has been done by the Times and the Journal on China’s environmental problems. That has been to the clear benefit of the Chinese people. It has also, in a way, been to the benefit of China’s leaders, since their success has depended on their ability to be responsive to national needs and popular demands—needs and demands that they often would have missed without the efforts of American reporters. The novel coronavirus outbreak, like the 2003 SARS outbreak before it, provides an especially stark example of how foreign reporting spurs needed government action... American reporters have been pesky, but the service they provided, especially to Chinese people, has been invaluable. Think back over the last several decades about key stories involving China, and practically each time there was an American reporter if not at the center, at least close by. The Tiananmen Square crackdown of 1989? Jeff Widener, an Associated Press photojournalist from Long Beach, California, took the iconic picture of “the tank man,” a lone protester who, following the June 4 crackdown, stopped a line of People’s Liberation Army tanks. The CCP may not have liked the picture, but no image from the calamity better captured its pathos than the futile standoff between man and war machine. Widener’s picture was the starting point of thousands of conversations with Chinese students who came to the United States, often to study science but ultimately learning much, much more.  Then there’s the CCP’s much-vaunted crackdown on corruption under President and Chinese Communist Party General Secretary Xi Jinping. Groundbreaking work by the American New York Times journalists Michael Forsythe and David Barboza on the fortunes of the families of China’s high and mighty set a new standard for financial forensic journalism. No doubt the details of their reports mortified the CCP writ large, but every individual Chinese official with whom I have spoken has privately acknowledged that these reports constituted a necessary, bracing tonic to a sclerotic political system. That would never have come about had these reporters not been in China... Each day, the Communist Party publishes a compendium of reports about China in foreign publications. This compendium is classified, and it is also treasured by those high ranking enough to gain access to it. A declassified version of this compendium, Cankao Xiaoxi, has the largest circulation of any newspaper in China.  In a closed system such as China’s, these reports constitute a key source of news and perspective. In an environment where all the news must fit into a narrative set by the Ministry of Propaganda, alternative facts are in scant supply and thus uniquely valuable. That’s what foreign reporters provide the Chinese government; this service will suffer when Beijing nixes the American contribution to that effort. Under Xi, the Chinese political system is becoming ever more closed—making the service provided by the foreign press corps even more valuable... he New York Times published a series of stories based on leaked CCP documents concerning the mass incarceration of more than one million Uighurs in northwestern China. The source of the leak is almost as fascinating as the content: “a member of the Chinese political establishment.” That suggests greater discontent inside the party apparatus over the crackdown than was previously known. Wouldn’t China’s leadership want to know that?"

Evergrande: Crisis-hit Chinese property giant reveals $81bn loss - "Crisis-hit Chinese property giant Evergrande has revealed that in 2021 and 2022 it lost a combined 581.9bn yuan ($81.1bn; £62bn).  The firm, which defaulted on its debts in late-2021, reported its long overdue earnings to investors in Hong Kong."

China’s Abandoned Electric Cars Pile Up After EV Boom Fueled by Subsidies - "On the outskirts of the Chinese city of Hangzhou, a small dilapidated temple overlooks a graveyard of sorts: a series of fields where hundreds upon hundreds of electric cars have been abandoned among weeds and garbage. Similar pools of unwanted battery-powered vehicles have sprouted up in at least half a dozen cities across China, though a few have been cleaned up. In Hangzhou, some cars have been left for so long that plants are sprouting from their trunks. Others were discarded in such a hurry that fluffy toys still sit on their dashboards.  The scenes recall the aftermath of the nation’s bike-sharing crash in 2018, when tens of millions of bicycles ended up in rivers, ditches and disused parking lots after the rise and fall of startups backed by big tech such as Ofo and Mobike... About a decade ago, encouraged by government subsidies, hundreds of automakers across China, both established players and startups, waded into electric-car manufacturing. They churned out huge numbers of early-stage EVs — relatively no-frills cars whose batteries in some instances could only run for around 100 kilometers (62 miles) on a charge.  Those vehicles were mostly bought by ride-hailing companies that leased them to drivers... Many of the ride-hailing companies that were early adopters of EVs have gone out of business. There are now around 100 Chinese electric-car makers, down from roughly 500 in 2019. The graveyards are a troubling consequence of that consolidation. Not only are the sites an eyesore, getting rid of EVs so quickly reduces their climate benefit considering they’re more emissions-intensive to build and only produce an advantage over combustion cars after a few years. Each of the vehicles’ spent batteries also contain precious ingredients like nickel, lithium and cobalt — metals that could be recycled to make China’s EV industry more environmentally friendly.  According to local media reports, the government of Hangzhou has vowed to dispose of the cars, which started to accumulate in 2019. But when Bloomberg News visited late last month, reporters uncovered several sites filled with abandoned EVs in the city’s Yuhang and West Lake districts after scouring satellite images and hacking through overgrown dirt paths... In the mid-2010s, China ramped up its push for EV adoption with a credit system that rewarded automakers for producing EVs and penalized the manufacturing of high fuel-consumption cars. A 2021 Fitch Ratings Inc. report raised the possibility that some companies started ride-hailing companies as an easy way to absorb their growing inventories of EVs that weren’t being bought by the public.  Some companies also began cheating the subsidy program by falsifying records for non-existent EVs. For example, they could produce an empty chassis that didn’t contain a battery, or make cars with batteries that didn’t meet the correct specifications. The official People’s Daily in 2016 cited estimates that dozens of companies had fraudulently claimed more than 9.3 billion yuan ($1.3 billion) in subsidies. Beijing began slashing national subsidies for all electric car purchases in 2019. Many ride-hailing companies were unprepared for the policy change, which severely affected their cash flow. “Those players couldn’t survive”... “The shared bikes and EV graveyards are a result of unconstrained capitalism,” Wu said. “The waste of resources, the damage to the environment, the vanishing wealth, it’s a natural consequence.”"
Apparently government subsidies and regulation are the fault of capitalism

Uproar Over New Citizen's "Heart Always Belongs to China" Little Red Book Post - "A post on China’s “Instagram”, Little Red Book, has gotten many Singaporeans rankled.  The post, made by a user known as “Singapore – Little Dragon Brother”, shows him holding up a Singapore passport.  “Singapore – Little Dragon Brother” captions the post in Chinese, saying:      “A villager from the farm! Successfully received Singapore citizenship after 4 years!”  Ending the post nationalistically with a China flag, he added:      “Heart always belongs to China.”...       “If the reverse happened, this would be seen as treason by China people. Maybe they (the Chinese government) might even catch him and shoot him.”"

Evergrande bankruptcy: Chinese property developer files for Chapter 15 protection in the US - "China’s Evergrande Group — once the country’s second-largest property developer — filed for bankruptcy...   The beleaguered firm borrowed heavily and defaulted on its debt in 2021, sparking a massive property crisis in China’s economy, which continues to feel the effects...   The industry’s problems have been amplified by an overall economic slowdown in the country."

China's youth unemployment rate just hit a new high and its GDP growth missed analysts' expectations - "China on Monday said its economy grew 6.3% in the second quarter of 2023 from a year ago, badly missing analysts' expectations.  The country's youth unemployment hit a new record high of 21.3% in the second quarter. This means more than one in five of those between 16 to 24 years old are unemployed... The country's second-quarter GDP data could be masking troubles in its economy because the of the low base last year when the country was still mired in on-off COVID-19 lockdowns... Recent economic data printout of China has also been poor — on Thursday, China's economy flashed a red flag.  The country's exports tanked 12.4% in June from a year ago, while imports fell 6.8% in the same period — missing expectations majorly, official data showed.  After an initial spurt, China's economy has struggled to recover from three years of on-off COVID-19 lockdowns, pointing to a disappointing showing for the world's second-largest economy this year."

China Threatens ‘Consequences’ Over Inquiry on Canada Meddling - Bloomberg - "The embassy spokesman, however, said China has always adhered to the principle of non-interference in other countries’ internal affairs."

Marked for Mayhem

Marked for Mayhem

"The researchers realized the criminals were assessing the ease with which they could overpower the targets based on several nonverbal signals—posture, body language, pace of walking, length of stride, and awareness of environment. Neither criminals nor victims were consciously aware of these cues. They are what psychologists call "precipitators," personal attributes that increase a person's likelihood of being criminally victimized.

The researchers analyzed the body language of the people on the tape, and identified several aspects of demeanor that marked potential victims as good targets. One of the main precipitators is a walking style that lacks "interactional synchrony" and "wholeness." Perpetrators notice a person whose walk lacks organized movement and flowing motion. Criminals view such people as less self-confident—perhaps because their walk suggests they are less athletic and fit—and are much more likely to exploit them.

Just like predators in the wild, armed robbers often attack the slowest in the herd. People who drag their feet, shuffle along, or exhibit other unusual gaits are targeted more often than people who walk fast and fluidly.

That criminals are attuned to cues of vulnerability makes sense given that most criminals, especially murderers, are looking for people who will be easy to control. Even rape is motivated less by sex and more by the desire for control and power.

Sexual predators in particular look for people they can easily overpower. "The rapist is going to go after somebody who's not paying attention, who looks like they're not going to put up a fight, who's in a location that's going to make this more convenient," says Tod Burke, a criminologist at Radford University in Virginia...

"Like, if they had a dog, then forget it. Even a small one makes too much noise. If I saw a pair of construction boots, for example, out on the porch or on the landing, I walked right on by. In fact, I think if women who live alone would put a pair of old construction boots—or something that makes it look like a physically fit manly-type of guy lives with them—out in front of their door, most rapists or even burglars wouldn't even think about trying to get into their home."

Distraction is another cue criminals look for. Some people think talking on a cell phone enhances their safety because the other person can always summon help if there's trouble—but experts disagree...

James Giannini of Ohio State University discovered something shocking: Women who are the victims of rape tend to be less able than average to interpret nonverbal facial cues—which may render them oblivious to the warning signs of hostile intent and more likely to enter or stay in dangerous situations.

The same team also found that rapists tend to be more able than average to interpret facial cues, such as a downward gaze or a fearful expression. It's possible this skill makes rapists especially able to spot passive, submissive women. One study even showed that rapists are more empathetic toward women than other criminals—although they have a distinct empathy gap when it comes to their own victims. A highly attuned rapist and a woman who's oblivious to hostile body language make a dangerous combination.

Even personality plays a role. Conventional wisdom holds that women who dress provocatively draw attention and put themselves at risk of sexual assault. But studies show that it is women with passive, submissive personalities who are most likely to be raped—and that they tend to wear body-concealing clothing, such as high necklines, long pants and sleeves, and multiple layers. Predatory men can accurately identify submissive women just by their style of dress and other aspects of appearance. The hallmarks of submissive body language, such as downward gaze and slumped posture, may even be misinterpreted by rapists as flirtation.

Drinking and drug use, not surprisingly, also mark a person as a potential victim. "It's a robber's dream to knock a drunk down and take what they've got," says former Ohio detective Stacy Dittrich.

That goes double for sexual assault. Drunken people not only appear more vulnerable, they're also especially likely to place themselves in dangerous situations. Alcohol decreases people's ability to evaluate the consequences of their actions and distorts their ability to predict how others perceive them. And women who are intoxicated, studies show, tend to be animated, giving off signals sexual offenders may misinterpret as sexual interest...

Many armed robbers have a chip on their shoulders and view life as inherently unfair, says criminologist Richard Wright, a professor at the University of Missouri at St. Louis and co-author of Armed Robbers in Action: Stickups and Street Culture. As a result, they often see someone else's success as a reminder of their own failure and inferiority. Worse still, they interpret outward signs of another's prosperity as a personal affront. "When they see people flaunting their wealth or driving fancy cars, they see that as an attempt to put them down," Wright says.

For this reason, robbers are especially apt to target people who are flaunting material possessions or even just displaying a cocky, superior attitude. Street predators have their own word for such behavior—"flossing"—and it infuriates them...

In the inverted universe that resentment builds in the brain, many armed robbers view themselves as the real victims in the world, a world in which the rich take their wealth from the poor...

Avoid placing yourself in dangerous situations and stay aware of your surroundings at all times. Location is a key factor in street crime, particularly in cases of sexual assault. Criminals prefer sites that are likely to serve up few witnesses and little chance of being caught. Plan routes that avoid such locations.

And while you're at it, don't even talk to strangers on the street in isolated locations. One warning sign that you may be about to be robbed or attacked is the approach of a stranger on the street. The person may try to engage you in conversation. He may ask for the time, directions, bus fare, or try to tell you about a nice club or restaurant just around the corner.

Calvin Donaldson, who's been in prison in Louisiana for the last 28 years after robbing a couple in the French Quarter who asked him for directions, offers some advice: "Once you stop and let this guy engage you in conversation, you're opening yourself up," he says. "Some people you don't talk to. You just keep going."

How do you survive unharmed if you find yourself targeted? Cooperate. "They're not going to hurt you unless they need to," says New Orleans Police Department psychologist James Arey. Convicted armed robber Darryl Falls, who admits to committing more than 100 robberies, agrees. "The quicker you comply and give them your goods," he says, "the quicker they're out of your face.""

Damn victim blaming!

Looks like victim culture and left wing grievance mongering may increase criminality

The ADL has created a cottage industry claiming hate and anti-Semitism everywhere it doesn't exist, but it has yet to denounce Canada's Parliament giving an ACTUAL NAZI a standing ovation. The ADL is run by frauds and con men."

ADL condemned by 1500 rabbis over latest effort to fire Tucker Carlson - "The latest attempt and subsequent failure to fire and "cancel" Tucker Carlson has created backlash within the international Jewish community. This as one group of rabbis has sent a response to ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt, accusing him of massive hypocrisy.  The letter (obtained by The Jerusalem Post)  put forward by the Coalition for Jewish Values accused Greenblatt of becoming a flagrant partisan.  “Alas, the ADL has become markedly partisan under your leadership. Your organization published the guide, Naming the Hate, which features obscure neo-Nazis of the “alt-right,” yet says nothing regarding far more dangerous, leftist adherents of radical Islam. Similarly, the ADL denounced Brett Kavanaugh, but not Linda Sarsour.”  A comparison between the ADL’s statements about Brett Kavanaugh and Linda Sarsour indicate the organization was more brutal towards the Supreme Court Justice. With Sarsour, the ADL defended her freedom of speech in light of controversial remarks.  The CJV then goes on to say ADL inflated numbers when they said 163 bomb threats were sent to Jewish organizations in a “widely-circulated report.” Apparently 150 of those were made by one lone Jewish person. A review of ADL’s website shows that this exaggeration on their part indeed happened. The media uncritically ran with it. They closed their response to the ADL by shaming Greenblatt for “lending credibility” to MSNBC’s Al Sharpton. Who, as the letter says, “unapologetically led a three-day pogrom in Crown Heights” against what Sharpton called “the diamond merchants.”"

ADL Spews Anti-Gamer Hate, Says Steam and Valve Provide Platform For 'White Supremacists' - "The Anti-Defamation League has set its sights on the PC video game digital distribution company Steam and parent company Valve, accusing the latter of “harboring extremists.”  Putting aside the fact that in a strict one on one comparison the ADL is much closer to meeting the definition of a racial extremist organization than Steam is, the left-wing juggernaut’s attack on Steam last week was riddled with factual errors...   The ADL also attacked Valve for having a bold, ethical approach – by modern standards at least – to free speech and content moderation on the Steam store.   Users who had Pepe the Frog as their avatars on Steam were also singled out in the piece: “A significant number of Steam profiles feature Pepe the Frog, a popular Internet meme that was hijacked by the alt right, in clearly white supremacist contexts.”  The ADL also tried to compare the 2019 Christchurch shooting to first-person shooter games, stating that the usage of a GoPro camera “mimics first-person shooter games that simulate real-world weapons-based combat scenes.”  The fact that the Christchurch shooter had a Steam profile was also of note to the ADL. .  At the end of the article, the ADL laid out a long-winded list of demands for Valve to follow, including the ludicrous cry for “transparency reports.”"
Captain-Dork 🌺 on X - "I love how their advice is for valve to work with civil rights groups while describing themselves as a civil rights group. It almost like the ADL is a scam"

Charles Barkley Is a Great Example of a Black White Supremacist - "I’m sure some educated, right-leaning Negro conservative has already jumped in the comment section typing in all italics (because a black Republican would never use all caps, like a savage) about how “black people are not a monolith” and something about questioning people’s blackness. But let’s be honest—we all have a friend, co-worker or cousin who believes that the white man’s ice is a few degrees colder, and no one exemplifies the black man’s subconscious acceptance of white superiority more than Barkley... You’ve heard white-people solutions before. “White-people solutions” are the Caucasian answers to all black problems: “White people circulate their dollar 120,333 times in the white community before it leaves their neighborhood.” “White people start reading to their kids when they are still a sperm.” “White people invest their money in stocks, pork futures and private prisons.”  To be clear, these aren’t solutions for or by white people. Instead, they are the imaginings of black people who are white supremacists. Black white supremacists believe that the only correct way to do things is how they envision the white man would do it. A black white supremacist could never find anything wrong with a white man’s methodology, so he or she continually contorts him- or herself to end up on the Caucasian side of the argument.  And this is the difference between independent thinkers and black white supremacists. Most independent thinkers sometimes have legitimate disagreements with the accepted opinions of black America, but black white supremacists never find fault with white America, which means that everything ailing black people is black people’s fault. For them, nothing—not even the monuments of white supremacy—is the fault of racism. We’re just doing it wrong."
Somehow, taking the liberal view is being an "independent thinker"
Somehow harmful language is good when used to slime black people who don't follow liberal gospel

Why The Democrats Have Shifted Left Over The Last 30 Years - "The 2020 Democratic primary field has been touted as far more liberal than that of previous years. Candidates have proposed a number of progressive policies that were not even under consideration in the last presidential election, such as decriminalizing border crossings, levying higher taxes on the wealthy and offering reparations to descendants of enslaved men and women. What’s more, two of the field’s most liberal candidates, Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders, still sit atop the national polls. Is this apparent leftward shift in the Democratic Party real? And if so, what’s driving it?... the data shows that Democrats have indeed become more liberal over time, particularly on questions related to race and immigration... the recent uptick in the share of voters holding liberal beliefs is driven not just by the departure of conservative voters, but also by Democrats themselves becoming more liberal. It is, of course, hard to identify just one reason the Democratic Party has shifted leftward in recent years, but in my conversations with experts, they all pointed to party elites (both politicians and influential liberal voices online). Now, some research has found that cues from the parties and party elites are even shaping voters’ personal beliefs, particularly on issues of race and immigration.  But why have so many Democrats moved to the left on these issues? On the one hand, the fact that race and immigration played such a central role in the 2016 election was certainly a contributing factor. A 2018 study by Peter Enns at Cornell University found that rather than voters choosing a candidate who matched their views on controversies like the Black Lives Matter movement, they actually changed their own views to match those of their preferred candidates. And there is evidence that Trump is continuing to drive some of this — although, perhaps not in the way one might expect. There isn’t evidence, for instance, that his rhetoric has contributed to an uptick in racist and sexist attitudes among white voters; instead, as FiveThirtyEight contributor Matt Grossmann has written, “the evidence shows that liberal-leaning voters moved away from [Trump’s] views faster than conservatives moved toward them.”"
Liberals still claim the US has no left wing and that the left has not become more radical, as if open borders, abolishing the police and discriminating against white people are far right positions

In defence of ‘Brown Sugar’ - "the [Rolling] Stones have announced they will no longer perform the song ‘Brown Sugar’ due to, as far as I can gather, a few fannies complaining about the lyrics... apparently the song, in touching on as many taboo topics as possible in a somewhat lurid scattergun approach, has caused offence. Especially in its references to slavery. These were obviously not on the pro-slavery side, but such things need to be spelled out for today’s young audiences, who are more sensitive, and are also objectively bad people with no clue about art.  Oddly, Neil Young once got into trouble for the vehemently anti-slavery song, ‘Southern Man’, so perhaps it is simply a topic not best suited to rich, white musicians.    But should we really be censoring – or in this case, self-censoring – rock music for being controversial? I seem to recall that was kind of the whole point of it.    Ironically, it used to be the sexual content of rock’n’roll that caused a stir, with Elvis famously being filmed from the waist up on The Ed Sullivan Show due to his dangerously subversive pelvis.  Today, Cardi B is celebrated for her ‘WAP’ as the culture slides into porn-addled sexual degeneracy, while anything actually provocative in a social or political sense gets swiftly cancelled.  The Rolling Stones were of course formed in the wild era of the Sixties. But even since I grew up in the Nineties, the attitude towards edgy or challenging music has changed massively.    I recently revisited Eminem’s The Marshall Mathers LP, which I used to enjoy as a teenager, lifting weights in my room after yet another harrowing school day, like a perfect cliché of Mr Mathers’s angry, young, white, male demographic.  There is zero chance this album could get made now, due to basically all of the content. Perhaps that is why Eminem has now opened a spaghetti restaurant. Hopefully he won’t get in trouble for cultural appropriation.  And can you even imagine something like Morrissey’s ‘The National Front Disco’ being released now? Twitter would crash for about six days. To his credit, Morrissey would probably still release it. He has been perpetually cancelled for about 30 years anyway.   The Rolling Stones, now a mega-corporate, stadium-touring juggernaut, have been somewhat less brave.  Bands used to be so instinctively anti-corporation that the singers sometimes literally killed themselves if they sold too many records...   In hindsight, this art seemed to depend on a certain level of economic prosperity and general confidence about shared cultural values. You could attack the existing order from the privileged position of knowing deep down that it would remain intact.  But it didn’t remain intact.  For one, the rise to cultural dominance of the left – or at least a certain offshoot of left-wing thinking – has meant that, while the image of ‘the man’ was once a fusty conservative who deserved shaking up, you are now far more likely to be censored by someone who still owns a Che Guevara t-shirt.   As Ben Folds once sang: ‘Once you wanted revolution, now you’re the institution.’  And beyond this lies the problem that we are now so divided and suffering from the relentless politicisation of absolutely everything – turbocharged by social media and exacerbated by the inherent tensions of globalism – that the notion of provocative, interesting art and popular culture has become a decadent luxury we can no longer afford, or just an obscure relic we cannot even decipher."

Disturbing rise in countries coercing women into having more children, report finds - "A GROWING number of countries are adopting coercive pronatal policies in a bid to make women have more children, a report has found today.    Almost 30 percent of countries globally now have pronatalist policies – up from 10 percent in the 1970s.    The Welcome to Gilead report raises serious concerns about the abuse of reproductive rights by nationalistic governments, echoing the pronatal dystopia of Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale.   The report was produced by UK charity Population Matters backed by the Central and Eastern European Network for Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights. It details how right-wing, populist and nationalist administrations are stigmatising women who choose to have smaller families as unpatriotic    The report describes how policies intended to limit women’s reproductive choices are linked to population goals"
Weird. We were told with covid that no one was coerced into taking the vaccines, since no one was being tied down and injected, or forced to take a vaccine on pain of prison. But it seems having incentives to and encouraging people to have children is "coercion" (of course, encouraging anything liberals hate is coercion)

House arrest for impregnating daughter a race-based sentence - "In the summer of 2019, a baby was born in Nova Scotia with “serious medical complications and significant developmental delays.” Concerns by a medical geneticist led to police becoming involved. When the mother, 23, was discovered sexting her father during a visit to the neonatal intensive care unit, it all made sense.  The parents were a father-daughter pair with a 31-year age gap between them. Both were intellectually disabled. Their child, also disabled, has since been placed in foster care... Applying progressive sentencing principles, a majority of the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal decided late August that the father should only have to serve two years of house arrest (more reasonably, the dissenting judge believed that four years in jail was apt)...  The trial court, and a majority of the appeal court, didn’t buy the Crown’s argument. Why? Because the offender was remorseful and was determined unlikely to re-offend.  Another reason was that he is Black.  While the Crown established, using past cases, that a jail sentence of four to six years was normal for this kind of crime, the appeal court dismissed this as merely a guideline. The court also noted that the offenders, in previous cases, were not African Nova Scotians. When deciding whether offenders of such heritage should serve house arrest or jail, the court wrote that “a more nuanced approach” was required. In short, a racial discount was to be applied...   The uptake of race-based criminal procedure in Canada has been a concerning trend, and this is only the latest example. Race-based sentencing discounts began being used for Indigenous people in 1999 after a decision called R v. Gladue; this practice was expanded for Black offenders in Nova Scotia in 2019 and in Ontario in 2021. The Supreme Court of Canada has also said that Charter rights are also to be interpreted with a racial lens. In Ontario last year, the Ontario Court of Appeal ruled that the race of an accused person should be factored into the decision to allow a jury to know their criminal record. It’s hard to say how much the father’s community appreciates the court’s leniency, but what is clear from the court record is that he is not welcome. His crime put a rift between him and his seven other children, some of whom have barred him from seeing his grandchildren. His eighth child will be raised in foster care. He has been denounced within the broader African Nova Scotian community, and has consequently experienced social isolation.   The dissenting appeal judge, who also applied racial sentencing considerations but concluded that the father should serve jail time, pointed out that the crime had “a negative impact on the African Nova Scotian community.” There’s no doubt of that; incest harms the people at the heart of a small community the most. The theory behind lenient race-based sentencing is that it benefits a community, but in practice it deprives them of justice — while undermining the fairness of the system for everyone."
Structural racism is good when liberals approve of it

Australian prosecutors drop attempted murder charges after Muslim father allegedly stabbed daughter during 'attempted honor killing' - "Family members of a 21-year-old Muslim woman in Australia had attempted murder charges dropped this week after they pleaded guilty to lesser charges for an incident in 2021, where they held her down and stabbed her repeatedly.   According to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, prosecutors in the case alleged that the family members were attempting to punish the young woman for bringing shame onto their family after she started dating a Christian man she met at university."
Time to retire the term "honour killing" and replace it with "honour beating"

Year Zero - "revolution is in the air. Only in America would it look like this: an elite-sponsored Maoist revolt, couched as a Black liberation movement whose canonical texts are a corporate consultant’s white guilt self-help manual, and a New York Times series rewriting history to explain an election they called wrong.  Much of America has watched in quizzical silence in recent weeks as crowds declared war on an increasingly incoherent succession of historical symbols. Maybe you nodded as Confederate general Albert Pike was toppled or even when Christopher Columbus was beheaded, but it got a little weird when George Washington was emblazoned with “Fuck Cops” and set on fire, or when they went after Ulysses S. Grant, abolitionist Colonel Hans Christian Heg, “Forward,” (a seven-foot-tall female figure meant to symbolize progress), the Portland, Oregon “Elk statue,” or my personal favorite, the former slave Miguel de Cervantes, whose cheerful creations Don Quixote and Sancho Panza were apparently mistaken for reals and had their eyes lashed red in San Francisco... the fear of being shamed as a deviationist so high, that most of the weirder incidents went uncovered. Leading press organs engaged in real-time Soviet-style airbrushing... The New York Times, once the dictionary definition of “unprovocative,” suddenly reads like Pol Pot’s Sayings of Angkar. Heading into the Fourth of July weekend, the morning read for upscale white Manhattanites was denouncing Mount Rushmore, urging Black America to arm itself, and re-positioning America alongside more deserving historical parallels in a feature about caste systems... The people who run this country have run out of workable myths with which to distract the public, and in a moment of extreme crisis have chosen to stoke civil war and defame the rest of us – black and white – rather than admit to a generation of corruption, betrayal, and mismanagement... It became taboo even to say something as tame as, “Trump sold fake solutions to real problems.” Even that was too near the truth... It was one thing when Donald Trump’s campaign was denounced as racist. But as far back as the 2016 primaries, when the Clinton campaign began adopting the language of critical theory to denounce Sanders and “Bernie Bros,” we started to hear that protests coming from the left were also a white grievance campaign... By the accident of a leak, we know exactly how the New York Times perceived its mission during the Trump years. When Slate published a taped transcript of a Times town hall captained by editor Dean Baquet, we learned the paper in the early Trump years “built their newsroom to cover one story,” i.e. the Trump-Russia scandal... As journalism, 1619 read almost exactly like the paper’s post-mortems on the 2016 election – probably not an accident, since Baquet told us it was conceived identically as an effort to “understand the forces that led to the election of Donald Trump.” In both cases history was reduced to a simplistic showdown between evil racists and oppressed peoples.  The best explanation for these sudden reversals in rhetoric is that Trump broke the brains of America’s educated classes. Like Russian aristocrats who spent the last days of the Tsarist empire flocking to fortune-tellers and mystics, upscale blue-staters have lost themselves lately in quasi-religious tracts like White Fragility, and are lining up to flog themselves for personal and historical sins... The same pols and pundits who not long ago were waving the flag for wars and insisting that American-style democracy was so perfectly realized that it made sense to bring it to all the peoples of the world, by force if needed (think Friedman’s hypothesis of a borderless utopia of forced wealth creation called the Golden Straitjacket), have now reversed course to tell us our entire history needs to be wiped clean.  Everything is a lie now. CNN even put “Independence” in quotes when describing the holiday today (i.e. “Reexamining ‘Independence’ Day”). This revolution will end with Wolf Blitzer pulling a switch to dynamite the Statue of Liberty. Even if America is an idea whose time is past, I doubt it deserves an ending this ridiculous."

Re-educate yourself! - "‘OK Boomer’ is so last year. The new put-down of choice is ‘Educate Yourself!’...   Sometimes ‘Educate yourself!’ is accompanied by a handy reading list. Or a compilation of podcasts and films for those not quite ready for books yet. Or a list of Twitter accounts to follow for those lacking the attention span necessary for an entire newspaper article. Because people who are not woke are clearly thick, right? In the eyes of activists, people dumb enough to ask whether it’s right to pull down statues, to graffiti war memorials, or to erase the word woman, are very obviously in need of all the instruction they can get.  But beyond prescribing reading material, what does the command, ‘Educate yourself!’, actually mean? One answer is silence. ‘Educate yourself!’ closes down discussion. It means the end of any further dialogue. Along with ‘I’m so tired of all this’, and ‘I’m exhausted’, it allows the speaker to simultaneously take the moral high-ground and avoid any further interaction. In her bestseller Why I’m No Longer Talking to White People About Race, Reni Eddo-Lodge provides a detailed exposition of the impossibility of conversation between people with different skin colours, and the exhaustion of having to explain her lived experience to white people who refuse to accept her truth about the existence of structural racism. Rather than dialogue, it seems today’s anti-racists would have us all segregated in a hierarchy of different truths...   Of course, those barking ‘Educate yourself!’ do still talk to other people – they just don’t want the inconvenience of being challenged by those who might question their worldview. ‘Educate yourself!’ means ‘Come back when you agree that I’m right’. Ordering others to go away and do their homework allows activists to make as many assertions as they like, to proclaim their truth and talk of their lived experiences without having to provide evidence for their claims or be held accountable for their arguments.  Afua Hirsch embodies this anti-dialogue movement. In response to a psychotherapist who contacted her with criticisms of her work, Hirsch informed the world: ‘A white lady just emailed me scolding me for A) “turning her off” and B) not serving her adequately with practical advice. So A) I am not your minstrel, it’s not my job to make you feel good B) my advice is very practical EDUCATE. YOURSELF. You’re welcome.’   In between being an award-winning author, Guardian columnist and broadcaster, the Oxford-educated Hirsch is also the Wallis Annenberg Chair at the University of Southern California. She teaches on the university’s summer immersion programme for new journalism master’s students. Yet Hirsch’s tweeted message reveals a peculiarly narrow view of education. By her own account, education means: do not ask me questions and do not think critically.   ‘Educate yourself!’, as those yelling at JK Rowling on social media also demonstrate, means subject yourself to re-education until you come to understand the world in the way decreed correct by your woke betters. It doesn’t mean read widely — it means read the books we tell you to. It doesn’t mean think critically — it means think like us. This is the very opposite of what education should be about."

The ugly rise of left-wing racism - "In a remarkable exchange in the House of Commons recently, Labour backbencher Florence Eshalomi questioned whether home secretary Priti Patel truly understood racism in the UK. Essentially being hectored into doing so by Eshalomi, Patel discussed her personal experiences of racism in front of her parliamentary colleagues... Labour MPs sent Patel a letter, accusing her of ‘gaslighting other ethnic-minority communities’ – essentially of using her own heritage and experiences to downplay other forms of racism. As well as striking an unsavoury tone, the letter itself was authored by Bradford West MP Naz Shah – who is hardly the strongest authority on race relations.   Then there was the backlash to the announcement that Munira Mirza, head of No10’s policy unit, would be heading up a new commission on racial inequalities. Since the announcement she has been subjected to the most appalling forms of racism from the bigoted left. Mirza has previously criticised the politics of grievance, which she says acts as a barrier to meaningful policy change on issues of racial inequality. Leftist figures, in predictable fashion, have wasted little time in directing racially charged slurs towards her. Novara Media’s Ash Sarkar has labelled Mirza a ‘racial gatekeeper’ – a term used for non-white people who supposedly provide political cover for perceived injustices based on race. Dr Shola Mos-Shogbamimu, arguably one of the most poisonous voices in Britain’s race-relations debate, labelled Mirza a ‘brown executioner’ of ‘white supremacy’. University of Cambridge academic Priyamvada Gopal conducted a class-based analysis on the background of South Asian surnames, in a desperate attempt to tie Mirza with a position of natural privilege. This was strange, not least because Mirza is the daughter of a factory worker and Gopal is the daughter of a diplomat... she will not shy away from delving into politically sensitive territory. This would include, for instance, exploring how problematic internal cultural norms and social behaviours feed into economic disparities between British ethnic groups. This is deeply unsettling for the feelings-over-facts critical-race theorists, who refuse to acknowledge the possibility that family dynamics, lack of female empowerment, and a general failure to cultivate aspirational attitudes may be stalling the progress of certain non-white communities in the UK.    This reflects the hypocrisy and contradictions contained within Britain’s anti-racist movement. A growing number on the left are not welcoming of ethnic-minority advancement, unless the successful individuals fall neatly into their own political agenda on a range of matters – particularly ‘cultural’ issues such as immigration, multiculturalism and social cohesion.    Nor are they willing to discuss admittedly sensitive factors that are holding back the social progress of certain non-white ethnic groups in the UK. It is critically important that debates on race relations and ethnic inequalities are not hijacked by these ideologues. They label themselves as progressive anti-racists but are uninterested in truly getting to grips with and tackling what is driving inequality.  Worse still, they are guilty of indulging in one of the most dehumanising forms of racism: insisting individuals must think a certain way, purely on the basis of their racial identity. This ultimately strips non-white people of agency, and rejects the idea that they can think for themselves"

Council accused of ‘mansplaining’ menstruation after appointing man as ‘period dignity officer’ - "A Scottish council has been accused of  “mansplaining menstruation” after appointing a man as its first-ever “period dignity officer”.  SNP-led Dundee City Council was criticised by party leader Ian Blackford, who said it would be “far better” if women occupied such roles, while Baroness Fox also accused the Scottish Government of “peak gender idiocy”.  Former world number one tennis player Martina Navratilova hit out at the “ridiculous” appointment, with others describing it as “institutionalised mansplaining”.  The backlash came on the same day the country’s flagship law offering free period products was launched.  The newly appointed period dignity officer, Jason Grant, said he was eager to make sure people “of any gender” were aware of the availability of period products... Since Monday, when the Period Products Act came into force, councils and education providers in Scotland will be legally required to ensure free sanitary products are available to anyone who needs them."

Gender Equality as a Development Goal - "The best way to reduce violence against women, lift them out of poverty, and empower them to be full and equal members of society is to break the cycle of early marriage and childbirth... spending one dollar on improving women's access to economic opportunities yields about $7 in health, education, and poverty-alleviation benefits. Other studies show that spending a dollar on improving girls' education is also a sound investment, producing $5 of benefits for each dollar spent."

To Catch a Cheater sees woman hire porn star to see if boyfriend would cheat... and it ended pretty badly - "The suspicious girlfriend sent stunning Valerie White to chat up her boyfriend of a year, and the honey-trap backfired in the worst way... She finally decided: "OK, OK. I'm not going to break up with him but I don't like that he got her number and said he would hang out."  But the video shows her confessing her trap to her man – and that’s when it all goes horribly wrong.  Furious at her for testing him publicly, he dumped her immediately, telling her: “I'm done.” As she begs him to be understanding, and tells him “I did this for us”, he hangs up."

I Date Men I'll Never See Again When I Travel — And It's My Secret To A Great Trip - "Unlike dating at home in Los Angeles, dating on vacation lacks the promise of longevity. Which raises the question — why do I do it? Yes, it adds a certain flavor to my solo trips, and I get to meet the locals in a much more intimate way. But, beyond that, when I meet someone knowing our time together is limited, I am choosing to live in and enjoy the current moment.  On vacation, I don’t ask, Do we have a future? Will he text me? Do I call? Are we going on a second date? Is he “the one”? Our time together is brilliant and short, like a shooting star. And with all the traditional rules thrown out the window, I am able to focus on the most beautiful part of spending time with another human — the connection we form with one another."
Short term dating isn't exactly a new thing. But neither are holiday romances or long distance relationships

In Search of Romance? Try Moving Abroad. - The New York Times - "Ms. Margo is living a dream of many American women who are seeking relationships abroad, some of whom cite the toxic dating scene in the United States. Tinder Passport, a subscription service that allows users to match with people in a destination of their choice, is one of the app’s most popular features, with a majority of members using it up to nine times a month... “Paris is, for a lot of people, the epitome of romance,” said Susan House, the executive producer of the show. “American women love Paris.” Romanticized images of an American woman in a beret roaming through the streets of Paris, kissing a French partner by the Eiffel Tower — they are enchanting for many. (Think: “Emily in Paris.”)... “They felt like by going to a different country, suitors are more serious, or there’s more intention behind their actions,” Ms. House said. It’s a sentiment that is shared by many American women who have had disappointing dating experiences in the states and feel that moving to a different country might help them open up to the idea of love again. Alexis Brown, for example, noticed a lack of “effort and intention” from the men she was dating in Atlanta, where she attended Spelman College.  “The dating culture in the U.S. is that it’s cool and normalized to be indifferent to someone and not really express how you genuinely feel,” Ms. Brown, 23, said.  When she traveled across Europe for vacation from October 2022 to January 2023, however, the people she dated made it clear that they wanted to spend time with her."

The True Origins of Woke

The True Origins of Woke - The Atlantic

Summary (from writer's Twitter):

"Much of my academic training is in intellectual history.

So to understand the ideas about group identity that have become powerful so quickly, I did a TON of reading.

Here's the true story of the origins of "woke"—and how it explains many themes of today's left.

The new ideas about race, gender, and sexual orientation constitute a novel ideology, which radically departs from the traditional left.

They are inspired by three main traditions: postmodernism, postcolonialism, and critical race theory. And they focus on the role that groups do—and should—play in society.

That's why I call them the "identity synthesis."...

while I do believe that this novel ideology is a trap, its main themes are rooted in the work of serious thinkers whose ideas are worth taking seriously. They are:

* A deep skepticism about objective truth taken from Michel Foucault.
* The use of “discourse analysis” for explicitly political ends inspired by Edward Said.
* A doubling-down on identity rooted in the concept of “strategic essentialism” coined by Gayatri Spivak.
* A preference for public policies that explicitly tie the treatment a person receives to their group identity, as advocated by Derrick Bell.
* And a profound skepticism about the idea that you and I will be able to understand each other if we stand at different intersections of identities, loosely based on the work of Kimberlé Crenshaw...

Many of these scholars were very subtle and interesting. I enjoyed reading them!

And many would have been horrified by what became of their ideas—or explicitly said so.

Foucault... would have abhorred the ways in which big social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook have transformed public debate into a modern-day panopticon, with every misstep subject to draconian punishment and all users trying to follow an amorphous set of rules about what they can or cannot say in an act of anticipatory obedience."

Quotes from article:

"Many people in media and politics claim that wokeness is simply a matter of justice and decency: a willingness to acknowledge the cruelties of America’s past and a recognition of the ways they still shape the country. “Being woke,” Joe Walsh, a former Republican congressman who became a vocal critic of Donald Trump, has said, “just means being empathetic.”...

It now constitutes a genuinely novel ideology, which has radically transformed what it means to be left-wing...

Foucault soon chafed at the Marxist orthodoxy demanded by his comrades, leaving the party by 1953. “Over anyone who pretended to be on the left,” he would later complain, the party “laid down the law. One was either for or against; an ally or an adversary.” He became an adversary.

This combination of a commitment to left-wing ideals and a mistrust of grand narratives that justify coercion, including Marxism, constitutes the core of Foucault’s published work...

Power, he argued, is much more indirect than the top-down model traditionally taught in civics classes. Because real power lies in the normative assumptions embedded in the discourses that structure our society and the identity labels we use to make sense of the world, it is “produced from one moment to the next, at every point.”

This belief made Foucault deeply skeptical about the perfectibility of our social world. People would always chafe against the form that power takes at any given moment in history: “Where there is power, there is resistance,” he wrote. But this resistance, if successful, would itself come to exercise a power of its own. Even the most noble struggle, Foucault warned his readers, would contain within itself the seed of new forms of oppression.

Foucault left his devotees with a complicated legacy. On the one hand, they recognized that his philosophy allowed them to question the prevailing assumptions and institutions of their age, including claims to objective truth or universal validity. On the other hand, Foucault’s pessimism about the possibility of creating a less oppressive world disappointed them. As Noam Chomsky told me 50 years after a famous encounter with Foucault for a televised debate at a Dutch university, he had “never seen such an amoral—not immoral, amoral—person in my life.”

In the late 1970s and ’80s, a series of postcolonial thinkers, such as Edward Said and Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, set out to resolve this tension. Simultaneously influenced by Foucault and uncomfortable with his fatalistic conclusions, their ambition was to infuse the prospect for political agency back into his ideas...

For many of Orientalism’s readers, it seemed clear that the goal of cultural analysis should be to help those who have the least power. They sought to change the dominant discourse to help the oppressed resist the oppressor.

Postcolonial scholars took Said’s work as a model for how to apply discourse analysis to explicitly political ends. A new wave of researchers concerned with such topics as gender, the media, and the experiences of migrants and ethnic minorities quickly embraced their toolkit. In time, the idea that a lot of political activism might revolve around critiquing dominant discourses or labeling certain cultural artifacts as “problematic” went mainstream, finding currency on social-media platforms and in traditional newspapers.

Foucault’s legacy left postcolonial scholars with a second obstacle. In rejecting grand narratives, he had not only turned against the idea of universal values or objective truth; he was also arguing that identity labels such as “women,” “proletarians,” and the “masses of the Third World” were reductive. Such generalizations, he claimed, create the illusion that a hugely varied group of people share some essential set of characteristics; this misperception could even help perpetuate injustices. The oppressed, Foucault observed, do not need intellectuals to speak on their behalf.

Spivak, an Indian literary scholar, strongly disagreed. Parisian philosophes, she argued, could take their social standing for granted. But the people with whom she was most concerned had none of their resources and enjoyed no such recognition. In countries such as India, she concluded in her most celebrated article, the “subaltern” cannot speak.

This presented Spivak, who had made her name as an interpreter of postmodernist philosophers, with a dilemma. How could she stay true to her distrust of dominant discourses, including identity categories, while speaking on behalf of the marginalized groups for which she felt a deep kinship? The key to doing better, she argued, was to embrace identity markers that could prove useful in practice even if they might be suspect in theory. “I think we have to choose again strategically,” she suggested, “not universal discourse but essentialist discourse … I must say I am an essentialist from time to time.”

These cryptic remarks took on a life of their own. Faced with the problem of how to speak for the oppressed, scholars from numerous disciplines followed Spivak’s example. They continued in the spirit of postmodernism to cast doubt on claims of scientific objectivity or universal principles. At the same time, they insisted on using broad identity categories and speaking for the downtrodden by embracing what they came to call “strategic essentialism.”

Over time, Spivak’s paradoxical compromise became a political rallying cry. Today, activists who carefully acknowledge that race or gender or ability status “is a social construct” nevertheless go on to make surprisingly essentializing claims about what, say, brown people or women or the disabled believe and demand.

The embrace of strategic essentialism also helps explain the logic behind the rise of new social customs, such as the establishment of racially separate “affinity groups” in many progressive spaces. Spivak came to believe that a commitment to identity categories such as race was strategically useful. Many progressives took this to mean that activists—and even grade-school students—should be encouraged to conceive of themselves first and foremost in racial terms...

Bell’s skepticism about the civil-rights movement also made him distrust the idea that the racial attitudes of most Americans were improving...

According to Bell, the legal remedies implemented during the civil-rights era, such as school desegregation, would never suffice to overcome the legacy of slavery. It was high time, he wrote in a 1992 paper, for a “review and replacement of the now defunct racial equality ideology.” To win lasting progress, Bell proposed, would require more than nominal equality; it would take explicit group rights that compensated the marginalized. He and his followers called for policies that openly distinguished among citizens on the basis of skin color, so that those who had historically been oppressed would henceforth receive preferential treatment.

Bell died in 2011. A decade later, his ideas are enjoying a second life as an avowedly anti-racist left is embracing his call for race-sensitive public policy. The determination to put “racial equity” before old-fashioned forms of “racial equality” is evident today in many public policies, such as when, in the early days of the coronavirus pandemic, the Small Business Administration prioritized nonwhite restaurant owners for emergency relief funds.

Much of today’s progressive politics is a popularized version of what I call the “identity synthesis.” To a remarkable extent, the ideas, norms, and practices that have become so prevalent on social media and in corporate diversity trainings owe a debt to these four thinkers in particular. They are rooted in a deep skepticism about objective truth inspired by Foucault, the use of discourse analysis for explicitly political ends taken from Said, an embrace of essentialist categories of identity derived from Spivak, and a preference for public policies that explicitly tie the treatment a person receives to their group identity, as advocated by Bell. (Kimberlé Crenshaw, the Black feminist legal scholar who coined the idea of “intersectionality,” which has since taken on a life of its own, might be considered another key member of this progressive pantheon.)

The mainstream influence of these ideas makes all the more interesting the fact that several of these thinkers came to have misgivings about the uses to which they were put. Foucault, who died in 1984, would, I suspect, have been quick to remind his devotees that the impulse to reshape discourses for political ends can, despite the liberatory aim, readily morph into new forms of repression.

Said, who died in 2003, addressed the problem explicitly. “Identity,” he wrote shortly before his death, is “as boring a subject as one can imagine.” For that reason, he admonished, “marginality and homelessness are not, in my opinion, to be gloried in; they are to be brought to an end, so that more, and not fewer, people can enjoy the benefits of what has for centuries been denied the victims of race, class, or gender.”

Spivak, too, was forthright about her dismay at how the idea of strategic essentialism had helped forge a new ideology. Praising the “political use of humor” by African Americans, she lamented its absence among today’s “university identity wallahs.”...

For all their good intentions, they undermine progress toward genuine equality among members of different groups. Despite its allure, the identity synthesis turns out to be a trap.

As the identity synthesis has gained in influence, its flaws have become harder to ignore. A striking number of progressive advocacy groups, for example, have been consumed by internal meltdowns in recent years. “We used to want to make the world a better place,” a leader of one progressive organization complained recently. “Now we just make our organizations more miserable to work at.” As institutions such as the Sierra Club and the ACLU have implemented the norms inspired by the identity synthesis, they have had more difficulty serving their primary missions.

The identity synthesis is also starting to remake public policy in ways that are more likely to create a society of warring tribes. In the early months of the pandemic, for example, a key advisory committee to the CDC recommended that states prioritize essential workers in the rollout of scarce vaccines rather than the elderly, in part because “racial and ethnic minorities are underrepresented” among seniors. Not only did this policy, according to the CDC’s own models, have the probable outcome of increasing the overall number of Americans who would perish in the pandemic; it also placed different ethnic groups in competition with one another for lifesaving medications.

When decision makers appear out of touch with the values and priorities of most citizens, demagogues thrive. The well-founded fears roused by the election of Trump accelerated the ascendancy of the identity synthesis in many elite institutions. Conversely, the newfound hold that these ideas now have over such institutions makes it more likely that he might win back the White House in 2024. The identity synthesis and far-right populism may at first glance appear to be polar opposites; in political practice, one is the yin to the other’s yang...

It’s imperative to recognize that its founders explicitly saw themselves as rejecting widely held values, such as the core tenets of the civil-rights movement.

The lure of the identity synthesis to so many people is a desire to overcome persistent injustices and create a society of genuine equals. But the likely outcome of uncritically accepting this ideology is a society that places an unremitting emphasis on our differences. The effect is to pit rigidly defined identity groups against one another in a zero-sum battle for resources and recognition.

Critics of the identity trap commonly claim that progressive activists are “going too far.” But what is at issue is not having too much of a good thing. The real problem is that, even at its best, this ideology violates the ardent aspirations for a better future to which all of us should remain committed."

The woke have no empathy for "majorities", so wokeness is definitely not about empathy.

This is another explanation of how postmodernism works within wokeness/post-Marxism despite the seeming contradiction.
