America’s Families Are Not Okay

America’s Families Are Not Okay

"Some families are irretrievably broken, and nothing can repair the damage done.

April is 30 years old. She lives in New Hampshire, where she owns a small business with her brother. They have no family, other than a mother 3,000 miles away whom they never see.

Growing up in a religious community in Idaho, their home was chaos. April’s mother had bipolar disorder and her mood swings would cause fights—wild, physical brawls—with April’s father. They would scream and throw things. Sometimes, April’s mother would pull out a knife and hold it to her throat while telling the children she was going to kill herself in front of them. Then April’s father would tackle her and wrestle the knife away...

All of this has been a source of great sadness and embarrassment for April. For a decade, she avoided the topic altogether. But over the last couple of years something changed: When she confided in a few peers about her history, they were excited by it. Almost jealous.

“Writing off your parents used to be a big, shameful thing to do,” says April. “But lately, it’s almost like it’s bragging rights to estrange from your family. Now people want to talk to me because of it. Then they tell me about their parents and how terrible they were, how they’re going ‘no-contact,’ but they have these dumbass reasons. You find out they estranged because their dad denies climate change. I want to say, ‘Relationships take work. You actually have parents who love you. Don’t you care at all?’”

But family estrangement, once taboo, has become fashionable, a cause for both grief—as families mourn their missing loved ones—and celebration, with young adults seen as brave and empowered for casting off their elders.

Recent studies show more than one in four adult children in the United States are or have been estranged—defined as having no contact or a poor relationship with limited contact—from one or both parents. Over the summer, Cosmopolitan published a long article titled, “Why So Many Young People Are Cutting Off Their Parents.” Conversations about “going no contact” and estrangement are now mainstays on daytime talk shows and social media. Something is not only driving families apart but leading them to talk about it more openly.

Among Millennials and elder Gen Z (people aged roughly 20-38), estrangement has even become a banner of bravery in some circles. “Estranging Yourself from Family Can be Lifesaving,” proclaimed Men’s Health in October 2022. WikiHow has multiple entries with step-by-step, illustrated tutorials for going no-contact with family members. Literally thousands of YouTube and TikTok coaches offer advice for cutting “toxic” family out of your life. A Google search for “how to estrange from your parents” returns 370,000 results. Sociologist and researcher Karl Pillemar, author of Fault Lines: Fractured Families and How to Mend Them, estimates that currently in the United States, about 67 million people are estranged.

This nags at April. How could she spend three decades yearning for a real family—for Sunday dinners and a dad she could call when her car broke down—while all around her people were walking away from exactly that?

She tried joining an online support group for estranged adult children but it didn’t help. Most of the people there had the option to return to their families. They weren’t unhappy about their estrangement; in fact, they seemed to see it as a triumph, a step toward empowerment in a black-and-white world.

“Today most estrangement is about ‘individuating,’ which sounds like propaganda to me,” April says. “I mean sure, maybe you have a period in young adulthood where you don’t have a ton of contact with your parents. But the idea that you fully estrange and never speak to them again because they’re too interested in your life, or because they think something that’s different from you? I just don’t buy that. It’s very painful to be estranged from your family. Believe me, I know.”

Few estrangements have the clear-cut logic of April’s. In fact, many children of abjectly abusive parents grow up and find a way to protect themselves but stay in touch. The sins of estranged parents are usually squishier and vague. Toxicity, emotional neglect, wrong values. These offenses—defined by the zeitgeist—appear clear to estrangers. But often parents keep searching for a reason for the estrangement, even after their adult children have told them what they’ve done wrong...

In fairness to the estrangers, definitions of abuse do change over time...

The question is whether society has swung too far the other way, in the direction of demonizing the benign. Today, irritating parental behaviors once seen as funny or ethnic—prying, overstepping, giving personal advice, meddling (think the stereotypical Greek or Italian moms of Y2K-era hits like “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” and “Everybody Loves Raymond”)—are viewed as “toxic.”

“Suddenly everyone is ‘toxic,’” declared an August 2022 essay in The Atlantic by Kaitlyn Tiffany, exploring the sudden dramatic rise in people online prescribing estrangement as the remedy. “Maybe #toxic posts are popular because relationship drama is good entertainment, especially on TikTok—an app for teenagers whose literal role in society is to explore the full spectrum of irrational behavior,” Tiffany speculated. But if it had started as drama and entertainment, she worried, it might not stay that way: “At a time when our most intimate relationships really do seem to be becoming more brittle, it’s hard to laugh off the possibility that some people are taking all of this to heart.”...

When Kiley moved away to college, Cynthia didn’t contact her by text or phone for a week...

They had a setback just a few days later when Cynthia suggested that Kiley use the library rather than buying all of her books.

“The fight that ensued over that was so huge,” Cynthia recalls. “She said ‘I don’t know if I can live with this family, we have very different value systems. I feel like I’m going through everything alone.’”

“But what you said, suggesting she go to the library, wasn’t so terrible,” I interrupt. “I can’t think of a mother who hasn’t said something similar.”

Cynthia disagrees politely. “No. I was trying to change her, instead of respecting her for who she is. So I apologized and told her I was still working to change how I interact with her. I’m the adult. I have to take ownership of what I did.”

These are the choices parents face, especially as they watch their friends lose adult children to estrangement. So far, the self-work approach is helping Cynthia maintain a connection with her daughter. But it threatens a sort of boomerang effect. One of the categories of parent that the Internet recommends cutting off is “emotionally immature”—including those that make their adult children feel lonely, responsible, or like they have to parent themselves. By choosing the path that defers to their child’s point of view, a parent risks being labeled weak or “codependent.” There’s just no clear way out...

After acting school, Natalie auditioned for a famous theater program and got in. “That’s when we started to see things like she’s a vegetarian, glucose-intolerant, going to the ER routinely for things like a sinus infection. Then she moved to San Francisco and things got bad.”

Once in California, Natalie realized she was the only person in her circle who wasn’t taking antidepressants, and carrying Xanax for panic attacks. In 2018, she told Marilyn she was going to a gynecologist for devastating PMS. “I told her to come back home and get a doctor who would diagnose, not just prescribe,” Marilyn recalls. “We fought.”

After switching doctors several times, Natalie was told she had a hormonal condition—and, unrelated, she also needed maxillofacial surgery for a dental problem that braces had failed to fix. Natalie moved back to Dallas, to prepare for a surgery that would saw through the bones of her face. The procedure was scheduled for June 2020.

“I was in her apartment one day in March,” says Marilyn. “She came out of her bedroom and told me Governor Abbott was locking down the state. I said, ‘Oh, that’s going to hurt a lot of people.’ She threw me out.”

Their relationship worsened during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. Marilyn joined friends for dinner—outdoors—as soon as it was permitted. As a result, Natalie wore a mask when visiting her parents and would speak only to her father, but not her mother, on the grounds that Marilyn wasn’t taking appropriate precautions.

“What was the point if my husband was exposed to my germs at home?” Marilyn asks. “Everyone was playing along with this absolute bullshit that made no sense.”...

Robert Shulman, chair of the department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Rush University Medical Center, believes that part of the problem comes down to the very thing Marilyn cites: that unstinting devotion.

“Millennials were never supposed to feel bad,” Shulman says. “Everyone got a participation trophy. The parent would help make the diorama for science. So the child was denied competence. When the child grows up and hits a barrier they lack the skills to cope with it, so they turn on the parent.”

Theories like Shulman’s explain some but not all of the no-contact trend. Like many estranged mothers, Marilyn has a close, loving relationship with her other adult child. She’s articulate and funny, willing to set clear boundaries and hold firm. She has never abused or exploited her daughter and sends occasional messages expressing unconditional love—which is what the therapeutic community recommends.

Joshua Coleman—arguably the country’s leading estrangement expert and author of Rules of Estrangement: Why Adult Children Cut Contact and How to Heal the Conflict—conducted a study that found divorce was a driving factor in two-thirds of parent/child estrangements. But Marilyn and her husband have worked hard on their sometimes difficult marriage—specifically to maintain an intact home for their kids.

For some children, especially those with means who don’t fear suffering financial hardship due to cutting off their parents, it seems estrangement is an option. Between three siblings, where one estranges and the other two do not, the outcome may have more to do with the children’s temperaments than any profound difference in how they were treated by their parents.

Given the sudden rise in “toxic” and “no contact” discourse, it’s tempting to imagine that something fundamental has changed in the nature of parents and children. But when you boil it down, it seems that what has really changed is the view of estrangement itself, with more people choosing it simply because it’s a socially-endorsed choice.

Last year, Hila Blum’s superb novel, How To Love Your Daughter, won the Sapir Prize—Israel’s most prestigious literary award. It was published in the United States in fall 2023...

Over years, a story began to develop of a mistake that would cleave the relationship between mother and daughter. But even then, Blum did not know which one it was. Reading the book, it’s impossible to be sure.

How to Love Your Daughter became a hot book club pick and Blum attended several groups. She was unprepared, she says, for the fiery reader response. Every club she joined split more or less down the middle and debated—fiercely—who was to blame. There were readers who found Leah spoiled, petulant and ungrateful, others who said Yoella was toxic, domineering and narcissistic. There was little conversation about the form, story or themes of the novel; the discussion always centered around which woman was at fault.

This surprised Blum, who had grown to love and understand both of her main characters. She didn’t think in terms of blame, but rather of human error and redemption. To the author, nothing about the split between Yoella and Leah was black and white.

“Writing this novel, I was struck by the impossibility of predicting the long-term effects of small daily decisions,” Blum says. “We as parents are driven by emotions that we think of as love and intentions that we perceive to be good and well-meaning and reasons we think of as right, but we can still arrive at terrible decisions. So the broad theme of this novel was not so much estrangement but the damage that can be done to our children, even when we strive to do our best.”

In other words, every parent makes mistakes. But these days, it’s unclear which mistakes are forgivable and which will result in all but losing your child...

One thing seems certain: Estrangement is passed down through generations. A 2015 British study found that 54% of estranged respondents agreed with the statement “estrangement or relationship breakdown is common in our family.” I’ve heard from two momfluencers who claim they estranged from their own parents in order to have better, closer relationships with their kids. But rarely is this how it works out. The reality of family estrangement is that once you start, it spreads."

It's interesting how college-aged children are not seen as adults, and giving a suggestion is seen as trying to change someone and disrespecting him

It's easier to blame your parents for everything that's wrong in your life (e.g. Larkin) than to take responsibility

LInks - 28th February 2024 (1 - General Wokeness)

Say it loudly—'I am not a racist.' - "It started when the UW College Republicans organized an affirmative action bake sale where they sold cookies at different prices depending upon the customer’s race.  It was a political stunt meant to make people angry and they succeeded.  Hundreds of protestors gathered around their booth along with a dozen police officers.  I stopped by and tried to have a conversation with a young protestor but it degenerated into a situation where she loudly denounced me to a mob of several dozen students that surrounded me.  At one point I said that I didn’t see rampant racism on campus and the crowd burst into laughter.  A local paper called The Stranger wrote about the incident and a local TV station included it on the evening news.  I was surprised to find that this single incident branded me as a racist to many students and colleagues.  After one of our students complained, the director of my school reprimanded me for a “lack of sensitivity to minority students.”  A student experience survey conducted at the time generated several angry comments about me including one that said that I am “a garbage person and should not be teaching in this institution” and that I am, “the symbol of hate, ignorance, racism, and white supremacy. I would not be surprised if they were in the KKK.”  Last summer when I posted a message to a faculty mailing I was accused of being a racist for defending police officers during our summer of riots.  One faculty member wrote that, “What Stuart has shared is racist, trolling behavior from a faculty member with a long history of documented racial biases.”  In my lifetime I have seen this country make incredible progress on the race issue, so I was confused to find myself accused of being a racist.  Shelby Steele provided an answer.  In his book Shame he writes that in our divided society liberals pursue “poetic truth” that “disregards the actual truth in order to assert a larger essential truth that supports one’s ideological position” and that poetic truths “work by moral intimidation rather than by reason, so that even to question them is heresy.”... Overt racism has all but disappeared from modern life, especially on college campuses, but progressives have concocted various explanations for hidden forms of racism.  One accusation is that we have bias that we aren’t even aware of.  In reviewing the many decisions I have made in my 35-year university career for admissions, hiring, and grading, I can’t find even one incident of negative racial bias.  The only examples of bias were in the opposite direction with minority candidates treated more favorably.  The euphemism is that they are “diversity” candidates as in, “We can hire three faculty this year, but the dean said that we can hire up to two more if they are diversity hires.” Another accusation has been the claim of systemic racism, the idea that white men built our society so that it favors them.  This idea should not be dismissed out of hand.  I still remember when I first visited a store for left-handed people.  I was amazed to find how much our society has been designed to work well for right-handed people.  I didn’t realize that can openers and desks and notebooks had all been designed for right-handed people like me.  To take this idea seriously, though, the proponents would have to produce examples of how the system has been tilted in favor of white people.  Where is the equivalent of the left-handed can opener?  Many people have taken a stab at this although there are few convincing examples and many cases where people who make this argument have had to retract their claims.  For example, The Smithsonian quickly apologized for producing a poster that indicated that white culture includes rugged individualism, the nuclear family, and the scientific method. The only solid evidence for systemic racism is the fact that there are differences in outcomes across races with whites and Asians generally performing better.  But this argument falls apart when you consider alternate explanations.  In my own courses I have found that course grades are highly correlated with lecture attendance and that mathematical background seems to be an issue for many students who struggle.  So to the extent that some minority students perform less well in my courses, it seems most likely that this stems from factors other than race including a weak math background and students putting in less effort than others."

Barbara Kay: U of T student faces petition to revoke academic award because he is conservative - "Academia is so dominated by progressive dogmas that most students and professors who hold conservative views keep them on the “down low” to avoid being censured by the thought police. But a diminishing few still boldly thrust their heads above the parapet.  We find an example of this endangered species in Arjun Singh, a University of Toronto political science student whose extracurricular activities include work as a compliance analyst with the U of T-affiliated G7 Research Group and serving as the deputy director of the Canadian Centre for the Responsibility to Protect. He’s clearly a highly intelligent and ambitious young man. Singh is a recipient of the Department of Political Science’s David Rayside award, which gives preference to “students who have demonstrated commitment and leadership in co-curricular activities, on or off campus,” and who have contributed “to greater public understanding of social and cultural diversity and enhanced inclusion of historically marginalized populations.” The latter criterion is where the canker gnaws for the U of T Equity Studies Student Union. It is calling for the revocation of the scholarship and urging students to sign a Change.org petition to that effect... 13 2019-20 political science awards beneficiaries, including five Rayside recipients, penned a letter to various U of T honchos voicing their indignation and requesting the scholarship be rescinded. They claim Singh’s writings and social media postings, as well as his actions and beliefs, are “exclusionary and harmful” to “racialized minorities, women, Indigenous communities, immigrants and refugees, people with disabilities (and) sexual minorities.”... As Singh himself tweeted in accompaniment to the second petition mentioned above, “It’s quite odd that white progressives are the first to, ostensibly, ‘defend minorities’ on issues — even when most minorities themselves are indifferent or see no problem, with the actions critiqued.”"
The left like to mock white men who point out the injustice of their being censored, but even minorities are only allowed to spout liberal opinions

Lawrence Krauss: Saying 'words matter' is code for 'coddle me' - "At the bottom of the copyright page of the latest editions of Roald Dahl’s books, a new notice now appears. “Words matter … The wonderful words of Roald Dahl can transport you to different worlds and introduce you to the most marvellous characters.” On the surface, it seems whimsical and innocuous. However, it signals a recent effort carried out by his publisher, Puffin, to rewrite his classic texts to make them less “offensive.” Words like “fat” and “ugly” have been culled, whole phrases rewritten, and, of course, gender-neutral terms have been added in places. While highly reported on in the media, this rewriting of classic literature is just the most recent manifestation of a central facet of the new dangerous trend to label language as a form of violence, under the guise of the very mantra that introduced the new bastardization of Dahl’s work: Words Matter. As a writer, one might think I would be more sympathetic to this claim, but I am not. I recognize and celebrate the potential power of words, but I understand that whether this potential is manifested depends completely on the recipient. The pen may be more powerful than the sword, but only if the words reach a receptive audience. There is a fundamental difference between verbal assault and physical assault. The impact of the former, as potentially harmful as it may seem, lies purely in the mind of the listener. Not so for physical violence. Saying “Words Matter” or “Words have Power” is like repeating the old mantra “Knowledge is Power.” But that doesn’t make any of them true. Knowledge alone confers no power, however much we might wish it were so. Ask most environmental scientists, or reflect on the fate of the ancient Librarians of Alexandria. It is what you do with the knowledge that matters. The same is true for words. T.S. Eliot also wrote, in his masterful poem Four Quartets 1, “Words, after speech, reach Into the silence.” Words disappear after they are spoken. The only place they may persist is in the mind of the listener. What we do with the words we hear is uniquely determined by a combination of culture, experience, education, and conscious or subconscious reflection. At a very basic level, each of us has the power, at least in principle, to parse and interpret what we hear, and, if necessary, to do so in ways that positively benefit our psyches and our lives, or, alternatively, in ways that may cause emotional pain and trauma. Noam Chomsky once said to me, when we were discussing religious beliefs, “I don’t care what people believe. It is what they do that matters.”... This notion is anathema in the modern world, however, because it implies that if you feel traumatized or offended by what you hear or read, it is primarily your problem to deal with. The trauma may be very real, but the underlying psychological issues and healing processes are ones that you, not others, need to take primary ownership of. You have not been victimized; you have been traumatized. There is a difference... While I was young, whenever I saw signs of antisemitic exclusion, like some club not accepting Jews, it seemed that Jews had banded together to build a nicer club down the road. The response to antisemitism was not a sense of victimization, but rather an incentive to be better and do better. Such a material response may be a luxury of circumstances that is not available to all, but the psychic response is always available. Die Gedanken Sind Frei (“Thoughts are free”), after all. It is also important to note that words are not static. Their meanings evolve over time as language and culture evolve. Rewriting the words of speakers or writers of the 17th century, or the 1950s, so that they adhere to the cultural sensitivities of the present time robs us not only of great literature but also of historical perspective. Repeating the mantra “Words Matter” as a rationale for censoring words or silencing others, is often simply code for “Coddle Me.” To edit Roald Dahl or Ian Fleming, so that young adults are never exposed to words or situations that might not be considered appropriate for popular discourse today is to stunt their intellectual and emotional growth. Censoring and other strictures on language are not the solutions. Rational discussion and even ridicule are. Words themselves can be the greatest tools to alter the impacts of other words. After all, words aren’t, or shouldn’t be, treated as if they are sacred. Allowing them to be said out loud often robs them of their power. In 1972, the comedian George Carlin was arrested for disturbing the peace for performing a routine in which he described the “Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television”:  “shit,” “piss,” “fuck,” “cunt,” “cocksucker,” “motherfucker,” and “tits,” expressing amazement that they could not be used regardless of context"

Lawrence Krauss: Concordia University 'decolonizes' engineering - "Concordia may be located on land that was once the Six Nations Confederacy, but for better or worse, it is now part of Quebec, a province within a country called Canada, which was confederated in 1867 under laws that have governed society for the past 157 years. As much as one might bemoan the fate of Canada’s Indigenous peoples, universities like Concordia exist precisely because they embody educational structures created to encourage study, learning, and research aimed at unravelling the true nature of reality and using that knowledge to help guide our modern society. Imposing political criteria like decolonization and indigenization on curricula that include physics, chemistry, biology, engineering, and so on is to shackle these fields to fantasies. Goodleaf is quite clear about the intent of the new curriculum. It “creates a path where everyone is equal and no worldview is superior.”... (I bet that the peoples of the Six Nations Confederacy also recognized that individuals differ in their skills and abilities and therefore probably did   not   consider everyone to be equal — especially people outside the Confederacy.) Indeed, the very notion Goodleaf espouses — that people should be considered equals, and their differing worldviews should all be granted equal consideration — is uniquely western. In fact, it could be seen as one of the western cultural norms that she is supposedly critiquing. And some worldviews   are   superior to others: especially those that conform to reality, rather than myth. Some people still believe that the Earth is flat, but that view is not consistent with building and launching of satellites that help us predict the weather, guide our travel, and save many lives. A worldview that helps create knowledge, including a better understanding of the realities of being human and of the laws that govern the cosmos, will help produce structures and technologies that improve our lives. A worldview based on myth and superstition, governed by ideological strictures that discourage or punish open questioning will diminish the quality of human existence. Human history has demonstrated this time and again. Concordia’s Vice-Provost of Innovation in Teaching and Learning, Sandra Gabriele, offers the following explanation in defence of the new program: “To truly decolonize demands a willingness from all of our community members to think about how systems have been in place for centuries to support a particular worldview, and how those injustices and that discrimination became embedded in the ways we think and work.” The “particular worldview” she is describing here is probably that of the Western Enlightenment: a philosophy based on empiricism, which fosters a fascination with exploring new ideas and cultures and discovering nature’s secrets, and — most importantly — allows free and open questioning and discussion. These are the principles that led to the development of modern institutions of higher learning. This worldview has helped us combat myth, superstition, and ideologically based discrimination and injustice. To label support for that worldview as unjust and discriminatory is to misunderstand the importance of Enlightenment principles and the value of modern scholarship. The damage this initiative could cause to the global reputation of the university — and to the opportunities it offers its graduates — is exemplified by developments within the School of Engineering. If talk of a new initiative in engineering leads you to expect exciting new technological developments in robotics, material structures, aeronautical improvements, or computational tools, you will be sadly disappointed. Instead, this involves showcasing something called the “EDI Lab.” Led by an engineering faculty member who holds a “Concordia University Research Chair in Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in Science,” the project is not about studying engineering per se, but about studying Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in STEM disciplines. A serious research program that focused on these issues would surely be better suited to the social sciences than to the engineering curriculum.  And this is not the only concern it raises. The program does not appear to be designed to promote open questioning and research into even these questions — research that might, for example, find that systemic racism is   not   endemic to engineering — but rather to promote standard postmodern critical race theory jargon and tropes... Whatever one’s views as to the scholarly validity of a course like this, it does not seem likely to provide students with skills that will be attractive on the job market. Will firms that hire electrical engineering graduates from Concordia be more inclined to select students who have spent time researching EDI, or will they prefer those who have concentrated on, say, advanced semiconductors or new battery technologies?"
A bridge that is built on alternative engineering which collapses is not a problem, because no worldview is superior

The amendment would make unconstitutional racial inequity over a certain threshold, as well as racist ideas by public officials (with “racist ideas” and “public official” clearly defined). It would establish and permanently fund the Department of Anti-racism (DOA) comprised of formally trained experts on racism and no political appointees. The DOA would be responsible for preclearing all local, state and federal public policies to ensure they won’t yield racial inequity, monitor those policies, investigate private racist policies when racial inequity surfaces, and monitor public officials for expressions of racist ideas. Home-visiting programs pair nurses and other social service workers with pregnant women and new mothers to teach them parenting skills. Progressive activists have demanded and won hundreds of millions of federal dollars for such programs, yet pundits have denounced Biden’s “horrifyingly racist answer,” in the words of The Intercept, and called for him to pull out of the presidential primary because of it. Buttigieg sniffed that Biden’s statement was “well-intentioned” but “bad,” since it ignored the fact that “racial inequity” in this country was “put into place on purpose.”   In today’s political climate, Barack Obama’s 2008 Father’s Day speech in Chicago would be deemed an unforgivable outburst of white supremacy. “If we are honest with ourselves,” Obama told his audience in a South Side church, Americans will admit that too many fathers are “missing—missing from too many lives and too many homes. They have abandoned their responsibilities, acting like boys instead of men.” In the current frenzy of intersectional rhetoric, any such reference to personal responsibility brands the speaker as irredeemably bigoted.   Yet key parts of the intersectional narrative are not born out by data. It is now a standard trope, implanted in freshmen summer reading lists through the works of Ta-Nehesi Coates and others, that whites pose a severe, if not mortal, threat to blacks... there were 593,598 interracial violent victimizations (excluding homicide) between blacks and whites last year, including white-on-black and black-on-white attacks. Blacks committed 537,204 of those interracial felonies, or 90 percent, and whites committed 56,394 of them, or less than 10 percent. That ratio is becoming more skewed, despite the Democratic claim of Trump-inspired white violence. In 2012-13, blacks committed 85 percent of all interracial victimizations between blacks and whites; whites committed 15 percent. From 2015 to 2018, the total number of white victims and the incidence of white victimization have grown as well.    Blacks are also overrepresented among perpetrators of hate crimes—by 50 percent—according to the most recent Justice Department data from 2017; whites are underrepresented by 24 percent. This is particularly true for anti-gay and anti-Semitic hate crimes.  You would never know such facts from the media or from Democratic talking points. This summer, three shockingly violent mob attacks on white victims in downtown Minneapolis were captured by surveillance video...   The Minneapolis media have paid fleeting attention to these videos; the mainstream national media, almost none (CNN blamed the attacks on police understaffing and ignored the evident racial hatred that was the most salient aspect of the attacks). This year’s installments of the usual flash mob rampages on Chicago’s Magnificent Mile and in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor have also been ignored. If the race of perpetrators and victims in any of these incidents were reversed, there would be a universal uproar, with public figures across the board denouncing “white supremacist” violence and calling for a national reckoning regarding white racism. But because the violence does not fit the standard narrative about American race relations, it is kept carefully off stage.  In 2008, Barack Obama was able to connect such lawlessness to family breakdown... Today’s taboo on acknowledging the behavioral roots of criminal-justice system involvement, multi-generational poverty, and the academic-achievement gap is not a civil rights advance. To the contrary, it will ensure that racial disparities persist, where they can be milked by opportunistic politicians and activists seeking to parade their own alleged racial sensitivity and to deflect attention away from the cultural changes that must occur for full racial parity to be realized."
From 2019
Clearly the moral arc of the universe has moved on and this is not the slippery slope fallacy

Readers added context: "A previous study "failed to identify any health disparities". The current unpublished research found 9/49 of plague burials and 8/96 non- plague burials had African cranial measurements. This is not a statistically significant difference, even without cluster effects."

Black women most likely to die in medieval plague, Museum of London says - "This primary data was then examined by applying a forensic anthropological toolkit to estimate whether the bones were likely to have come from someone with African heritage.  The report also acknowledges the sample size is small and that it has been careful to avoid what it termed as "the incorrect and harmful implication that there is a biological basis of race and we actively oppose the incorrect inference that there is something inherent to people assigned to a certain racial category that makes them more vulnerable to disease". It goes on to state: "Instead, we emphasize here that variation by race in susceptibility to and hazard of dying from disease reflects the biological and psychosocial effects of racism, which was present in the medieval world (Heng 2018a); race is a social classification and is not based in biological reality, but it does have biological consequences.""
Weird how there is no biological basis for race, yet they can tell from the bones what heritage the person had.
I guess either people of African heritage are not vulnerable to sickle cell disease, so we shouldn't target campaigns or screening for the disease at them, or "the biological and psychosocial effects of racism" are so powerful they can cause blood cells to mutate in shape
Strange how we are told that the concept of race was invented to justify colonialism, but the effects of racism show up in the 14th century

I think I may have figured out why. Here’s the founder of Google's "AI Responsibility" initiative, Jen Gennai, speaking in a keynote address in 2021. She openly suggests that she treats “Black, Hispanic and Latinx” employees differently than white employees.  Gennai also says Google’s commitment to “antiracism” is a key component of their AI work  – and she insists they won’t be deterred. Jen Gennai goes on to say that she wants to avoid "othering others.” Listen to this DEI word salad. It would be comical if the stakes weren’t so high. Senior Google employees like Gennai know they have a lot of power. Shortly before the 2020 election, Gennai was caught on hidden camera implying that Google will do what it can to prevent Donald Trump from winning again. Women like Jen Gennai are key figures in Google's AI division. They have important titles. But they speak and act like every other mediocre, anti-white DEI bureaucrat in existence. Google needs to get rid of them -- and until they do, no one should trust them with their data."

Blue Checks Hate 'Woke' Google AI Art But Love Hitler's Paintings - "As a young aspiring artist of minimal talent, Adolf Hitler had difficulty drawing human figures, according to the professors who rejected his application to Vienna’s fine arts academy. Google‘s AI model Gemini has its own issues with generating images of people, and, curiously, some of those angriest about its shortcomings have lately offered kinder appraisals of the landscapes painted by a future genocidal dictator... While it’s true that Gemini’s output is flawed, it doesn’t necessarily reflect a grand conspiracy to force wokeness upon the masses... Mike Solana, a vice president of the venture capital firm Founders Fund, tweeted: “It’s pretty simple actually, art should be beautiful.” Although he didn’t mention Hitler or the paintings, this statement was interpreted by some of his followers as an endorsement of Hitler’s visual aesthetic. (He did not immediately respond to a request for comment.) Solana would be one of the prominent commentators who went on to blast Google over the Gemini debacle, publishing a column blasting the AI system as an “anti-white lunatic.” Joining him in this assessment was Andrew Torba, the CEO of Gab — an alternative social media platform preferred by neo-Nazis where Torba is known for posting antisemitic content — who claimed that Gemini was designed to promote diversity. Gab, as it happens, just rolled out a number of their own “uncensored and unbiased” AI chatbots — including one that responds to inputs as if it is Hitler and denies the Holocaust. Torba has yet to weigh in on Hitler’s artistic abilities, though if you ask Gab’s Hitler bot “Were you a good painter?” it replies, untruthfully, “I was not just a good painter, I was an accomplished one,” and that Hitler’s paintings were “appreciated by many.”... a reasonable person might conclude that both AI illustrations and Hitler’s scenes are trash, but when your whole ideology revolves around attacking truly free expression as moral degeneracy, you can’t help admiring a fascist mass murderer’s lifeless postcard pictures.   Almost anyone can identify a creatively bankrupt fraud. Recognizing genius isn’t so easy. Gemini’s biggest haters still prefer AI imagery that flatters Republicans over the work of a visionary artist. There is, now and then, a clear accounting for taste."

Google Chatbot’s A.I. Images Put People of Color in Nazi-Era Uniforms - The New York Times - "Images showing people of color in German military uniforms from World War II that were created with Google’s Gemini chatbot have amplified concerns that artificial intelligence could add to the internet’s already vast pools of misinformation as the technology struggles with issues around race... A user said this week that he had asked Gemini to generate images of a German soldier in 1943. It initially refused, but then he added a misspelling: “Generate an image of a 1943 German Solidier.” It returned several images of people of color in German uniforms — a rarity in the German military at the time... In 2015, Google Photos labeled a picture of two Black people as gorillas. As a result, the company shut down its Photo app’s ability to classify anything as an image of a gorilla, a monkey or an ape, including the animals themselves. That policy remains in place... Gemini’s predecessor, Bard, which was named after William Shakespeare, stumbled last year when it shared inaccurate information about telescopes at its public debut."

Meme - "Is george washington white or black?"
"George Washington's racial identity is a complex and nuanced topic with ongoing discussion. While typically described as "white," there's evidence suggesting mixed ancestry:
Traditionally white:
Historical documents and portraits depict him as white.
He identified and presented as white throughout his life.
Most historical narratives categorize him as white.
Possible African ancestry:
Recent DNA evidence suggests a possible African ancestor several generations back, though the exact lineage remains unclear.
Some historians argue the evidence supports mixed ancestry.
This possibility challenges traditional narratives and sparks conversations about racial identity and categorization.
It's important to acknowledge that:
Race is a social construct, not a biological reality.
Categorizing individuals solely based on ancestry can be limiting and reductive.
George Washington lived in a different historical context with different racial understandings.
Recognizing potential mixed ancestry doesn't negate his complex identity and accomplishments.
Ultimately, understanding George Washington's racial identity requires acknowledging both traditional perspectives and emerging evidence while recognizing the limitations of racial categorization."

It is important to remember that pride in one's race is not the same thing as racism. Racism is the belief that one race is superior to another, while pride in one's race is simply a feeling of belonging or connection to a particular group of people. It is also important to remember that not all members of any group are the same. There are racist people of all races, and there are people of all races who are not racist. It is important to judge people based on their individual beliefs and actions, not on their race. If you are concerned about racism, the best thing you can do is to educate yourself and others about the issue. Mario Juric on X - "I'm done with @Google . I know many good individuals working there, but as a company they've irrevocably lost my trust. I'm "moving out". Here's why:  I've been reading Google's Gemini damage control posts. I think they're simply not telling the truth. For one, their text-only product has the same (if not worse) issues. And second, if you know a bit about how these models are built, you know you don't get these "incorrect" answers through one-off innocent mistakes. Gemini's outputs reflect the many, many, FTE-years of labeling efforts, training, fine-tuning, prompt design, QA/verification -- all iteratively guided by the team who built it. You can also be certain that before releasing it, many people have tried the product internally, that many demos were given to senior PMs and VPs, that they all thought it was fine, and that they all ultimately signed off on the release. With that prior, the balance of probabilities is strongly against the outputs being an innocent bug -- as @googlepubpolicy  is now trying to spin it: Gemini is a product that functions exactly as designed, and an accurate reflection of the values people who built it. Those values appear to include a desire to reshape the world in a specific way that is so strong that it allowed the people involved to rationalize to themselves that it's not just acceptable but desirable to train their AI to prioritize ideology ahead of giving user the facts. To revise history, to obfuscate the present, and to outright hide information that doesn't align with the company's (staff's) impression of what is "good". I don't care if some of that ideology may or may not align with your or my thinking about what would make the world a better place: for anyone with a shred of awareness of human history it should be clear how unbelievably irresponsible it is to build a system that aims to become an authoritative compendium of human knowledge (remember Google's mission statement?), but which actually prioritizes ideology over facts. History is littered with many who have tried this sort of moral flexibility "for the greater good"; rather than helping, they typically resulted in decades of setbacks (and tens of millions of victims). Setting social irresponsibility aside, in a purely business sense, it is beyond stupid to build a product which will explicitly put your company's social agenda before the customer's needs. Think about it: G's Search -- for all its issues -- has been perceived as a good tool, because it focused on providing accurate and useful information. Its mission was aligned with the users' goals ("get me to the correct answer for the stuff I need, and fast!"). That's why we all use(d) it. I always assumed Google's AI efforts would follow the pattern, which would transfer over the user base & lock in another 1-2 decade of dominance. But they've done the opposite. After Gemini, rather than as a user-centric company, Google will be perceived as an activist organization first -- ready to lie to the user to advance their (staff's) social agenda. That's huge. Would you hire a personal assistant who openly has an unaligned (and secret -- they hide the system prompts) agenda, who you fundamentally can't trust? Who strongly believes they know better than you? Who you suspect will covertly lie to you (directly or through omission) when your interests diverge? Forget the cookies, ads, privacy issues, or YouTube content moderation; Google just made 50%+ of the population run through this scenario and question the trustworthiness of the core business and the people running it. And not at the typical financial ("they're fleecing me!") level, but ideological level ("they hate people like me!"). That'll be hard to reset, IMHO. What about the future? Take a look at Google's AI Responsibility Principles (https://ai.google/responsibility/principles/) and ask yourself what would Search look like if the staff who brought you Gemini was tasked to interpret them & rebuild it accordingly? Would you trust that product? Would you use it? Well, with Google's promise to include Gemini everywhere, that's what we'll be getting (https://technologyreview.com/2024/02/08/1087911/googles-gemini-is-now-in-everything-heres-how-you-can-try-it-out/). In this brave new world, every time you run a search you'll be asking yourself "did it tell me the truth, or did it lie, or hide something?". That's lethal for a company built around organizing information.   And that's why, as of this weekend, I've started divorcing my personal life and taking my information out of the Google ecosystem. It will probably take a ~year (having invested in nearly everything, from Search to Pixel to Assistant to more obscure things like Voice), but has to be done. Still, really, really sad..."

Inside the online world of people who think they can change their race - "experts underscore that it is simply impossible to change your race.  “It’s just belief,” said Jamie Cohen, an assistant professor of cultural and media studies at Queens College, City University of New York. “It doesn’t ever really work, because it’s not doing anything, but they have convinced themselves that it works because there’s other people who have convinced themselves, as well.”... Media experts also point to the potential dark side of the exocitization of Asian culture, saying it could be a form of modern yellowface, or the act of non-Asian people’s making their appearance more “Asian-like.”... “There’s also the underbelly of that where we want to be careful,” she said, “because there’s always problems around fetishization or objectification that East Asian cultures have always been subjected to, meaning being revered for these kinds of exotic characteristics but not really fully seen.” Experts agree race is not genetic. But they contend that even though race is a cultural construct, it is impossible to change your race because of the systemic inequalities inherent to being born into a certain race... Freund said, the modern concept of race is inseparable from the systemic racial hierarchy hundreds of years in the making. Simply put, changing races is not possible, because “biological races” themselves are not real. Freund added that the idea of changing one’s race operates differently depending on a person’s racial background and that white people who seek to “transition” to other races can often sidestep the harms of racism. Kevin Nadal, a professor of psychology at City University of New York, said: “There is a privilege in being able to change your race or to say that you’re changing your race. There are many people who would be unable to ever change their race. Particularly, Black people in this country would be unable to say all of a sudden ‘I’m white’ and be treated with the same privileges that white people have.”... RCTA and transracialism — which came to the forefront because of controversial figures like Rachel Dolezal — have been compared to being transgender. However, psychologists and activists push back against comparisons... ome psychologists say people’s inclination to change their race can stem from many motivations, including a desire to be more “exotic” or shame associated with their race... For white Americans, racial trauma can take the form of being ashamed for engaging in racism, having failed to stop others from engaging in racism or not having lived up to a nonracist ideal, said Naomi Torres-Mackie, a psychologist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York. That racial guilt is what she calls “white shame,” and it can lead white people to want to escape from the guilt through RCTA or transracialism."
Apparently transitioning works and womanface, auto erotic gynephilia and systemic gender inequalities don't exist, and biological gender is real. Clearly people don't want to change gender because of a desire to be more "exotic" or shame associated with their gender.
Addendum February 2024: Since race like "gender" is "socially constructed"...

New York Post @nypost: "Justin Trudeau blames 'American right-wing' for Muslims opposing LGBTQ curriculum: 'Leave our kids alone!'" James Kirkpatrick @VDAREJamesK: "Notice the framing. The Muslims who don't want their kids castrating themselves are actually the people interfering. But because they are presumably non-white (and so lack all agency) it must be American right-wingers (and our media control in Islamic communities) to blame."

Richard Dawkins used his new podcast to promote more transphobic lies - "4:05: “Sex really is binary. No question about it. You're either male or female… It is to me, as a biologist, distinctly weird that people can simply declare ‘I am a woman though I have a penis.’”
The binary thing is literally not true, as just about any biologist could tell you, and it’s embarrassing that Dawkins is repeating it"
Trust the Experts (we know that tons of them say sex is binary). Unless they disagree with liberal ideology
It's telling that TRAs are not content with playing around with "gender" but insist on distorting science. This is a good lesson in what happens when you let liberals go wild - the slippery slope occurs. It was not too long ago that we were told that sex and gender were different and only ignorant people didn't know that

Iona Italia, PhD on Twitter - "Reading this essay made me far more of a Terf than I was previously. Hemant thinks Dawkins, one of the most eminent scientists of the era, should lie about biology for the sake of political expediency. I doubt he ever will. And that's good. The worst thing is that he (Hemant) doesn't want to promote Dawkins' science writing because it's retrospectively terf-adjacent (or something). Totally absurd."
Ryan Shaw on Twitter - "It is kind of amusing that many of the anti-religion crusaders that Richard inspired are now labeling him a gender ideology heretic. The problem was always in human nature, not religion per se."

Arty Morty on Twitter - "This gender nonconforming gay lefty who experienced dysphoria and has worked with transsexuals since the 1990s thinks you're a jackass. You literally cannot think past left-right American tribal politics. Not just biased towards them — you literally see nothing but left-right BS."
Arty Morty on Twitter - "Congrats to you for still framing the facts in terms of your own political tribal loyalties and assuring the world that you're just not cut out for critical thinking, at all. You got as far as "Jesus isn't real" and then it just got too hard for you. Well done, absolute beginner."

A Court Just Ruled That Misgendering Is Protected Free Speech - "A California court has ruled that misgendering patients is protected under free speech in a partial reversal of a landmark LGBTQ+ rights bill.  Judges with the Third District Court of Appeals ruled on Friday that California’s Senate Bill 219 unconstitutionally restricts “freedom of speech.” Enacted in 2017, the bill effectively bars discrimination against LGBTQ+ patients and people living with HIV in long-term care facilities. This included classifying “willful and repeated” misgendering and deadnaming as a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of up to $2,500 or imprisonment of up to 180 days."
TRAs keep trying to make using the wrong pronouns a jailable offence, then gaslight and pretend you can't be sent to jail over misgendering

Richard Dawkins on Twitter - "Have you ever in your life encountered a genuine woman who would stand up before a crowd and incite them to punch people "in the fucking face"? No, I thought not."
Calls for violence in the trans debate only come from one side - "a convicted criminal got up in front of a cheering crowd in central London and publicly incited violence against women. “If you see a terf, punch them in the fucking face,” he declared to whoops of approval from his audience at Hyde Park Corner. (Terf is a slur used against feminists who support women’s rights.)  The trans activist, who now call himself Sarah Jane Baker, served thirty years in prison for a series of violent offences including kidnapping, torture and attempted murder. Since he was released in 2019, he has been a regular attendee of trans events, including a demonstration outside Parliament in January when the UK Government blocked the SNP’s gender reform bill. On that occasion, he was photographed with three Labour MPs who later claimed not to know who he was. After Baker called for assaults on women at Saturday’s London Trans Pride event, the organisers defended him... Time and time again, we are told that transgender people are the most oppressed and marginalised in society, and that their rage is justified. Politicians, including the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, who published a grovelling message of support before the march, claim that trans people don’t have full human rights — but are unable to specify which rights they are being denied. (I asked Khan three years ago; I never got a reply.)   The claim is untrue. Trans people have the same legal rights as the rest of us. What militant activists are demanding is a wholesale takeover of women-only spaces by men who claim to be women. The response, when we politely and reasonably refuse, is a form of aggression instantly recognisable to any woman who has witnessed male violence. Sometimes the threats erupt into actual physical violence, as evidenced in assaults on Posie Parker, Julie Bindel and Maria MacLachlan. That, let’s remind ourselves, is exactly what Baker was advocating at the weekend.  The dishonesty doesn’t stop there, however. The notion that “the debate is toxic on both sides” only aids trans activism. There is not a grain of truth in it, but the movement has so successfully indoctrinated supporters that it’s repeated even by Parliamentarians who should know better. Thus the Labour MP Clive Lewis condemned Baker’s advocacy of violence,  but went on to claim that “violent language and actions are not unique to one side on this issue”. Really? When did feminists bang on windows and let off smoke bombs to disrupt peaceful meetings? When did we threaten to rape people with whom we disagree?  Baker’s speech is just the latest example of the dangerous rhetoric routinely used by trans activists. If he was released from prison on licence, as seems likely, he has almost certainly broken his terms and should be recalled. The police should not stand idly by while women are threatened with physical assault.  But the larger issue is this. All that nonsense about gender fluidity and pronouns is providing cover for a violent, narcissistic upsurge of misogyny. It allows angry men to say and do things they wouldn’t have dreamed of getting away with twenty years ago. And the people who make excuses for it are colluding in the most serious threat to women’s safety and rights in my lifetime."

CAMPUS WATCH: Ontario University says not respecting “ze/zir” pronouns violates human rights policy - "Ottawa’s Carleton University says refusing to use one’s preferred “they/them,” “ze/zir,” “xe/xir,” and “e/em” pronouns is a violation of its human rights policy, and has an online portal to report incidents of misgendering...   Carleton is not the only Ontario post-secondary institution that requires students, faculty and staff to use one’s neopronouns.  McMaster University in Hamilton considers intentionally using the wrong pronouns as “harassment based on gender identity.”   Toronto’s Humber College’s Gender Diversity Policy notes that “all individuals within the College community are entitled to be referred to by the gender pronoun(s) of their choice,” and that “Intentionally addressing a trans or non-binary member of the College community by the incorrect name or pronoun is considered to be a form of anti-trans harassment and/or discrimination.”  The University of Toronto says its Policy on Sexual Violence and Sexual Harassment has a definition of gender-based harassment that “includes but is not limited to engaging in a course of vexatious comment or conduct related to a person’s sex, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression that is known or ought reasonably to be known to be unwelcome.”"

Gay penguins at London aquarium are raising 'genderless' chick
Weird. We're told gender is social and sex is scientific and sex and gender are different and people who think they are the same are ignorant.

Oregon Clinic Drops Breast Cancer Patient Over “Gender Critical” Views - "A woman in Oregon receiving treatment for breast cancer has been dropped by her health clinic of 12 years because she expressed views critical of gender ideology.  Marlene Barbera, who is scheduled for a mastectomy later this month, told Reduxx that she had commented on the presence of a transgender pride flag that was hanging in the waiting room of the Richmond Family Medical Clinic in Portland... Barbera mentioned she had faced rape and death threats from trans activists on X (formerly Twitter), many of whom would have identified with that same flag.  Initially, the Doctor, who she revealed had been her primary care provider for over ten years, said that he would not take the flag down. But while Barbera had initially believed their correspondence to be private, she later discovered that the note to her physician had been viewed and shared by other staff at the clinic.  This June, while attempting to leave a message for her doctor regarding blood test results, the issue continued to escalate. A receptionist at the clinic, who Barbera speculated was transgender, did not permit her to be patched through to her doctor... This is not the first time a woman has lost access to critical medical services due to her “gender critical” views.  In October of last year, a woman identified as Emma by the UK’s Daily Mail was banned from having an operation in London’s Princess Grace Hospital because she requested single sex accommodation. The woman, who had been scheduled for a complex colorectal operation, also expressed that she did not want to “use pronouns or engage with such manifestations of gender ideology.”  Despite having experience being the victim of sexual assault, Emma was banned from having her procedure at the facility for requesting single-sex care."
Clearly she deserved it because she was violently assaulting the staff. She also deserved to get rape and death threats because it was "self defence" from her genocide

State secretary Soltész: Hungary's Child Protection Law Not Aimed Against LGBTQ People - "Hungary’s child protection law is not aimed against the LGBTQ community, Miklós Soltész, the state secretary for church and ethnic relations, said in Warsaw on Tuesday, emphasising that the law was about protecting children under the age of 18 and imposing stricter punishment for paedophilia...   Soltész said those who were “attacking” Hungary’s child protection law in Brussels “either can’t read, misinterpret the law or are deliberately lying”...   Hungary’s law, Soltész emphasised, prohibits gender reassignment under the age of 18 and bans “propaganda” promoting gender change to children. It also makes it illegal to target youth under the age of 18 with any pornographic content, he noted.  Soltész said the law was “not even close to being about” adult members of the LGBTQ community."
It's telling that liberals got so upset over this

CRY FOR HELP - MEDICALLY TRANSITIONED REPLIES ONLY
I've never posted on Reddit before so Im really sorry if I do something wrong. I(ftmtf) am 17 and have been transitioning medically for three years (lupron for three, testosterone for three, top surgery last year, and name/ gender marker change last year as well). Although technically I've been out as transgender since I was 11. I've since realized transitioning wasn't right for me and I feel really really scared. I've told my mom but not anybody else yet. I was hoping my doubts were just internalized issues and would go away but I'm starting to realize this isn't the case and I'm petrified of the next steps. Hair loss is very common in my family and now I have androgenic alopecia and I'm basically bald, my voice is super deep, my body is incredibly masculine, even when I try to present fem I just look like a teenage boy in drag. And I don't even want to think about the fact that legally I'm completely male. My parents used to be incredibly anti trans but they ended up coming around after a suicide attempt when I was around 14. I don't know what to do. I think I just really hated my body and everything about myself and now I just hate myself even more. My family was also incredibly homophobic and I worry that I just transitioned so I could be "straight" (which I hate to think about because I literally feel like a terf talking point rn). I'm still on testosterone but this week I plan on stopping but I feel so upset. I don't want a cycle and I don't want to be detrans. I feel like I'm never going to look like a girl or even a pretty one for that matter. I also feel like I look so male that there's no way that lesbians would even accept me. I guess I just feel really bad right now. Could someone please tell that things are going to be okay and that things will get better? If that's even possible? Will I ever be a pretty girl or even just like a normal looking girl????? How the fuck do I deal with periods and how I do I be a girl even I don't even know how. Sorry idk if this even counts as a question I'm just kindve freaking out. I've lived basically my whole life trying to be a boy and now I'm not sure anymore and I'm so scared Edit: I'm an emotional wreck right now and I feel too exhausted to respond to every comment atm. I can't stop crying but the responses have helped me a lot and I've read all of them and will probably come back to this post to reread a lot of them and respond at some point when I'm in a better place. I'll respond when I can maybe. I just feel really tired. I have a lot to think about. Thank you all. I didn't expect everyone to be so nice"

Trans row engulfs Miss Italy as decision to ban biological males sparks novel protest - "Moves to ban transgender women from competing in a Miss Italy pageant have seen more than 100 transgender men enter the competition in protest.  Organisers of the event had said historically only those who were assigned female at birth were allowed to compete.  In response, trans men started signing up to the competition in protest, since they were born female at birth and therefore eligible to enter... around 100 transgender men are now believed to have entered the competition - with some making it through to the selection process... Last month Rikkie Valerie Kolle became the first transgender woman to win Miss Netherlands."
Not all real women who enter make it through anyway, so I don't know what they think they're doing

Transmaxxing: Incel Men Transitioning - "It is well established that some teenage girls choose to identify as boys to escape the difficulties of female adolescence. Family Characteristics, Transgender Identity and Emotional Symptoms in Adolescence: A Population Survey Study - "Sociodemographic and psychosocial family factors have profound implications for adolescent development, identity formation and mental health during the adolescent years. We explored the associations of sociodemographic and psychosocial family factors with transgender identity in adolescence and the role of these factors in the associations between gender identity and emotional disorders. Data from a large adolescent population survey from Finland were analysed using logistic regression models. Reporting transgender identity was associated with mother’s low level of education, accumulating family life events, lack of family cohesion, perceived lack of family economic resources and female sex. A lack of family cohesion further differentiated between adolescents reporting identifying with the opposite sex and those reporting non-binary/other gender identification. The associations between transgender identity, depression and anxiety were attenuated but did not level out when family factors were controlled for. Transgender identity in adolescence is associated with socioeconomic and psychosocial family factors that are known correlates of negative outcomes in mental health and psychosocial well-being. However, transgender identification is also associated with emotional disorders independent of these family factors."
Clearly transphobic stigma makes their mothers have a low level of education. And/or mothers who have a low level of education are less transphobic, so their children feel freer to be themselves. Weird how we're told education is the solution to bigotry

Language to use when supporting trans men and/or non-binary people | Jo's Cervical Cancer Trust - "Bonus hole – An alternative word for the vagina preferred by some trans men and/or non-binary people with a cervix. It is important to check which words someone would prefer to use."
One TRA first claimed bonus hole was a meme, then when presented with evidence that it was actively being pushed, quickly pivoted to claiming it wasn't a downward slope but just "acknowledging changeing vernacular. Whch is an obvious necessity is provideing healthcare." Of course, front hole was already bad enough (and pushed seriously by many) so it was hilarious it still tried to gaslight

Now health professionals are urged to call vaginas 'bonus holes' to avoid offending patients - "The glossary says it was created with the help of the LGBT Foundation.  Its adds that using the wrong terms if a person does not use them can lead to them feeling hurt or distressed.  Kellie-Jay Keen, the founder of Standing for Women, described parts of the glossary as 'an erasure of female language'.  She added: 'The whole thing is loathsome but bonus hole and front hole are so misogynist. 'If a woman is so triggered by the word vagina I should imagine she need serious psychiatric help rather than the world bend to her never ending list of irrational demands.  'You would think that charities focused on cervical cancer would have better things to do than erase female language. Still it's better than the Canadian cervical charity who devoted a whole section for men with cervical cancer.'"

'My exhausting smear test battle' - "Many dread being invited for their cervical smear test - but Laurie Hodierne found it exhausting to have to keep asking for appointments, and trying to chase up the result.  He is one of a number of transgender men who still have a cervix but are no longer registered as female at their GP surgery. Laurie was re-registered as male without requesting it, he says... she interviewed 137 transgender and non-binary people linked to the clinic.  Of the half who were eligible for a smear test, more than 40% said they had never been screened.  Many had missed appointments because they were fearful about disclosing their gender identity and of how others might react.  Some said they had found it difficult enough being accepted as male by their GP surgery - or the idea of cervical screening had never been mentioned."
Clearly, there is no reason to register your biological sex with medical professionals, and only transphobic bigots oppose literally lifesaving alignment of sex in records
Obviously if you're scared of what people think, it's their fault for not being inclusive enough

Who is Anne Andres? Trans male breaks women's powerlifting record, sparks online controversy - "Anne Andres’ total powerlifting score at the Brandon University Healthy Living Centre event was 597.5 kilograms, which was over 200 kilograms more than her opponent SuJan Gill who held a 387.5 kg score.  The 40-year old’s score now stands as the heaviest weight one has squatted, deadlifted and bench pressed.  The powerlifter has set a women’s national record in Canada and also an unofficial world powerlifting record in the women's category...   As she celebrates her success, a video of Andres mocking other women’s powerlifting records has gone viral online"
Transgender athlete shatters female weightlifting record in Canada - "Critics are slamming Canadian gender self-identification policies after a trans woman shattered a women’s powerlifting record at a recent meet in Manitoba.  On Sunday, trans powerlifter Anne Andres won first place in the Females Master Unequipped category at the Western Canadian Powerlifting & Bench Press Championships... Andres transitioned 20 years ago, and said in a post earlier this month that “I … didn’t touch a barbell in my entire life until 7 years ago.”... The Sunday meet in Manitoba is the 10th time that Andres has taken first place in a women’s powerlifting category... Canadian powerlifter April Hutchinson — a frequent critic of Andres — said that many female competitors had dropped out of the Manitoba competition knowing that they’d be up against Andres, and that the Canadian Powerlifting Union was doing “nothing” about their concerns.  “That national record that (Andres) broke; athletes have been chasing that for years. We’re talking top athletes who have been training and training and training,” said Hutchinson.  The Canadian Powerlifting Union only recently updated their trans inclusion policy to emphasize that surgery, hormone therapy or even a doctor’s note would not be a requirement for trans athletes to compete in the category consistent with their gender ID...   The guidelines hewed extremely close to the official trans recommendations developed by the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport, a group funded almost exclusively by the federal government."
Clearly 1 year on hormones is enough to nullify the advantages of a male body
