LInks - 26th February 2024 (2 - Schools in the US)

Becky Pringle on X - "Our current standardized testing system is inaccurate, inequitable, and just plain broken. Our students deserve better."
Wesley Yang on X - "It's our schools' capacity to teach reading and math that is broken. Standardized testing is how we know this. The president of the NEA wants to hide the evidence."
Bryan Beal 🎧 on X - "Yup. Teachers Unions hate standardized testing because it’s the only tool we have to see if teachers and schools are actually doing their jobs."

Confession: teaching at a Title I school with a progressive admin has made me less liberal… : Teachers - "…and it’s making me sad how callous I’ve become. At the beginning of my career I swallowed all the social justice, restorative discipline, no grade below a 50, build relationships stuff hook line and sinker. Now in year 10, I feel like a bitter shell of myself who no longer believes in any of it. The main drivers of this:
1. Horrendous student behavior, directly proportionate to bad parenting, that admin excuses as “it’s just trauma, we can’t discipline for that” while students run into zero consequences until they get arrested at age 17 for felonies.
2. Continued lowering of the bar of rigor until it’s basically in the toilet, all in the name of equity, while kids who are trying to go to college can’t find rigorous courses to take (and in the few that exist, everyone is allowed in because of equity, so tons of kids just fuck around).
3. Prioritizing the needs of 3-4 disruptive students over the needs of the other 30 trying to learn, until even those 30 give up.
4. This one is tricky but: browbeating some teachers into accepting unprofessional, uncollegial behavior from other teachers because admin is afraid of being called racist.
5. Seeing the long term effects of lowered expectations, “grace”, and accepting the bare minimum from students and families, and the culture that fosters of entitlement/customer service rather than a true relationship between parents and teachers
6. Being held hostage emotionally by kids who say “that’s racist” any time they are asked to do something other than sit on TikTok and admin forced to take it seriously because they’re scared not to
It’s truly unreal to experience all of this and then hear white SJWs scream about how unfair the world is for kids of color and it’s all the fault of whiteness…I’m sorry, fucking WHAT? I get shit on by kids all day, and it’s my fault? I hate what this has done to me. I feel like a Fox News asshole."
It's interesting that recognising reality means you're "a Fox News asshole". That has interesting implications for what Fox News reports.
Surprisingly, all the comments I saw supported OP

Baltimore City Student misses first 140 school days, marked as present and passes classes - "“I’m excited for him,” said Latasha Phillips, as her son prepared for his first day of eleventh grade on the 141st day of the school year. “I’m just glad he’s not sitting here all day, not being productive.”  Her son, Qwantay Spearman, has physical disabilities. He attends ConneXions, a charter school in West Baltimore, where he’s thrived, earning a 3.7 grade point average, until this year. Qwantay missed the first 140 days of school because Baltimore City Schools could not provide him with a nurse, which is required under his federally mandated IEP or Individualized Education Program... This is Qwantay’s report card through March 1, 2022. In the first semester of this school year, according to his report card, Qwantay passed five classes, including Modern World History and Spanish. In Physics, he somehow earned a B-. When asked if he remembered taking Physics, Qwantay replied, “No.”  When asked if he knew a teacher named S. Brooks, who was listed on the report card for one of his courses, Qwantay replied, “Nope.”  The report card says he passed Algebra II with a D. His teacher even wrote Qwantay is a “pleasure to teach” with his “quality of work improving.”  “He shouldn't have any grades on there, because he has not been to school,” Phillips told Project Baltimore.  But according to Qwantay’s report card, he has been in school. He was marked present 33.5 days in the first quarter, even though he was not in class a single day. His family says those attendance numbers were falsified... The day after Project Baltimore spoke with the family, Qwantay’s mother received a call that a nurse was now available. After 140 days, her son could go to school... we went to a recent public event that Santelises was scheduled to attend. She never arrived, but two school board members did.  After the event was over, Project Baltimore’s Chris Papst approached the board members, who refused to answer his questions.  “This is harassment,” said Baltimore City School Board Member Michelle Bondima, who walked away as Papst introduced himself. As Papst followed, attempting to ask her a question, Bondima turned and replied, “I said you are harassing me.”  Project Baltimore also approached Baltimore City School Board Member Shantell L. Roberts.  “There is a young man, Qwantay Spearman, who has been greatly impacted by what happened at his school,” Papst explained to Roberts. “I’m sorry, you’re being disruptive to this event,” Roberts replied, even though the event had concluded.  Papst proceeded to ask Roberts, “As a school board member why won’t you speak with the media? Why won’t you grant interviews, isn’t that part of your job?”
When liberals complain about "harassment", they usually define it to mean disagreement with them or attempts to hold them accountable

To Shrink Learning Gap, This District Offers Classes Separated by Race - WSJ - "School leaders in this college town just north of Chicago have been battling a sizable academic achievement gap between Black, Latino and white students for decades. So a few years ago, the school district decided to try something new at the high school: classrooms voluntarily separated by race. Nearly 200 Black and Latino students at Evanston Township High School signed up this year for math classes and a writing seminar intended for students of the same race, taught by a teacher of color. These optional so-called affinity classes are designed to address the achievement gap by making students feel more comfortable in class, district leaders have said, particularly in Advanced Placement courses that historically have enrolled few Black and Latino students... Researchers have found some small improvements in grades and retention from such programs. Other studies have shown some improved educational outcomes, such as graduation rates, for Black and Latino students taught by teachers of the same race.  Public schools have also dabbled with separating students by gender, with successful programs that, for instance, encourage girls to become engineers... “A lot of times within our education system, Black students are expected to conform to a white standard,” said Dena Luna, who leads Black student-achievement initiatives in Minneapolis Public Schools... Leaders in Evanston’s high-school district, board members and teachers declined or ignored repeated requests to comment on the courses over several months. When a Wall Street Journal reporter arrived at a public meeting for parents of Black students, a district spokeswoman said she would cancel the meeting if the reporter didn’t leave... Equity guides many of the district’s decisions, embodied in a stated board goal: “Recognizing that racism is the most devastating factor contributing to the diminished achievement of students, ETHS will strive to eliminate the predictability of academic achievement based upon race.”...  The district hasn’t presented any analyses on whether the affinity courses have improved student outcomes."
When liberals support racial segregation
Apparently there're different standards for white and black students. Weird. I thought this is a far right conspiracy theory
I wonder why they're scared of the media. Surely it can't be because they have something to hide?

Teacher Credentials Don't Matter for Student Achievement - "Many American school districts pay teachers with master's degrees substantially more, even though a number of studies - including this one -- suggest that having a master's degree has little if any effect on student achievement... Teachers who entered teaching with a master's degree, or who earned it within five years of beginning to teach, were as effective as teachers without a master's degree. Teachers who earned a master's degree more than five years after they started teaching were less effective than those without master's degrees.  As in previous studies, the authors find here that teachers with more experience are better teachers. This is the case even after accounting for the fact that the teachers who remain teachers may, on average, be less effective than those who leave. The benefit of experience peaks at 21-27 years of teaching and adds 0.092 to 0.119 standard deviations to student achievement scores. More than half of that gain occurs during the first years of teaching. Teachers who come from competitive undergraduate institutions are somewhat more effective than those who come from uncompetitive colleges or universities, the researchers find.  By comparison, increasing class size by five students reduces math achievement by 0.015 to 0.025 standard deviations, and reading achievement by 0.010 to 0.020 standard deviations. Having a parent with only a high school degree decreases math scores by about 0.11 standard deviations relative to having a parent who has a college degree. Having a parent who is a high school dropout reduces achievement by another 0.11 standard deviations. The effects for reading are slightly larger than for math...   Previous work suggests that teachers with stronger credentials tend to end up teaching students who perform better academically. This rich dataset allows the authors to correct for the possibility that, while teachers with better credentials can command better students and thus are associated with high student achievement, the better results may not stem from better teaching."
Clearly teachers need even more training, and standardised tests are stupid because they are the best way to hold teachers accountable

New Central Bucks Board Democrat president sworn in with hand on sexually explicit book - "A new Pennsylvania school board president was sworn into her position on Monday with her hand on a stack of controversial books, one of which included sexually explicit content.  Karen Smith, a Democrat who was re-elected to the school board on Nov. 7, was sworn in on Dec. 4 as the new Central Bucks school board president... One of the books Smith placed her hand on is "Flamer," written by award-winning author and artist Mike Curato. Released in 2020, Curato's work is a semi-autobiographical graphic novel set in 1995. It tells the story of a character who is bullied at a Boy Scouts summer camp for "acting in a manner considered stereotypical of gay men." The graphic novel includes characters discussing pornography, erections, masturbation, penis size, and an illustration that depicts naked teenage boys. The book courted controversy across the country, making the American Library Association's list as one of the most "banned books" of 2022. The book has reportedly been challenged in at least 62 schools for its LGBTQ content and sexually explicit material."
On Facebook, liberals were cheering her fight for "banned books" and condemning Fox News for lying, without ever pointing out how Fox was wrong. As usual, "this is not happening, and it's good that it is". Why do liberals want to sexualise kids so much?

Portland Public Schools to factor in gender identity, race into school discipline: 'Completely backwards' - "School staff at Oregon-based Portland Public Schools (PPS) will now be required to consider a disruptive student's race, gender identity and sexual orientation before disciplining them.   A new collective bargaining agreement between Portland Public Schools and its teachers includes a change in policy regarding disciplinary actions...  the support plan "must take into consideration the impact of issues related to the student's trauma, race, gender identity/presentation, sexual orientation, disability, social-emotional learning, and restorative justice as appropriate for the student."  The agreement also says that the district utilizes a research-based "Racial Equity and Social Justice, Restorative Justice, and Trauma Informed" program to reduce exclusionary discipline practices... Kevin O’Leary, a famed investor and entrepreneur, said he realized the union structure was broken after spending half of his career in the educational software business trying to advance reading and math scores in the United States. "We're talking about punishing students, when really parents –  who pay the taxes to support this and pay teachers – have never been answered this question: Why does a union not reward good teachers that advance in terms of metrics that they have to advance in to get into college, which is reading math scores? And punish the ones that are no good at it," O'Leary said. "It’s a cancer in our educational system." Host Harris Faulkner added that paying teachers based on their performance was common sense.   "It's actually practical. It makes sense. But unfortunately, these teachers unions and these kinds of policies are just rooted in a virtue signaling," Faulkner said."

Lavern Spicer 🇺🇸 on X - "As of yesterday, Oregon high school students won't have to know how to read, write or do math to graduate from high school.  For at least the NEXT FIVE YEARS.  DEMOCRAT SCHOOL BOARD voted for this.  In other words, Democrats don’t think Black kids are smart enough to learn.  They call it EQUITY.  I call it BULLSHIT.  How they gonna compete with better-educated kids for good-paying jobs?  Oh right, they won’t.  They black, so they can just be maids and trash collectors and janitors AS USUAL.  This right here is why I stopped being a Democrat.  They all smoke and mirrors!  They never got over losing the slaves, so they make up for it by using education to keep us down.  Next they gonna report they got the highest scores for graduation because everybody passed.  Fuck these Democrats."

Oregon again says students don’t need to prove mastery of reading, writing or math to graduate, citing harm to students of color
Thomas Sowell Quote - "One of the painful signs of years of dumbed-down education is how many people are unable to make a coherent argument. They can vent their emotions, question other people’s motives, make bold assertions, repeat slogans – anything except reason"

Of course, liberal teachers couldn't possibly be indoctrinating their students

TFA Alumnus Describes Barriers to Student Achievement - "A large number of this country’s schools are failing its students—but not in the way that many columnists, education reformers, or school experts would have you believe...  When people ask me what I believe was the number one barrier to student achievement at my school, I always offer the same answer: the failure of the school and district to address chronically disruptive students. It was a problem created by negligent leaders who willingly allowed a free-for-all environment that was conducive to chaos instead of learning.                I’ll never forget the first day of staff development my second year. During the “welcome back” talk, my principal handed out a sheet which detailed the number of discipline referrals submitted by each teacher the previous year. We were informed that it is wrong to submit a lot of them because discipline is a classroom-management issue and therefore must be addressed within the classroom. Sending students to the office, she said, is simply not acceptable or allowed... It’s one thing when a student throws a paper ball at his friend, or when someone utters a rude comment. It’s quite another thing when a student tells you that she’ll “crack” your “bitch ass” or demands that you “get the fuck out of [her] face”. Unfortunately, as the students soon discovered, our principal offered no support whatsoever. Nearly ever discipline referral sent to the office was returned with a polite reminder to please contact the students’ parents. Clear and consistent consequences simply did not exist—even though they were mandated by the district’s code of conduct.  Once that realization spread, the school effectively went from quality to chaos overnight... By “students”, I’m of course referring to the 15-25% that were chronically disruptive. The truth is that the overwhelming majority in each class were great kids who came every day ready to learn...  This wasn’t just a problem at my school. When I spoke with other teachers throughout the district, they told me that the situation at their school was nearly identical to mine. Some of their stories are just as outrageous.  When students are subjected to a toxic environment that prevents learning, all other education concerns—curriculum, standards, integrating technology, etc—become totally irrelevant. Unfortunately, this is something rarely ever addressed in both local and national media. And education reformers—whether from watching Freedom Writers one too many times or just understanding that blaming teachers is politically expedient right now—repeat until they’re red in the face the idea that a teacher with leadership skills and high expectations can fix everything short of the conflict in the Middle East...  I should be surprised that the toxic atmosphere wasn’t addressed, but I’m not. I came to realize a certain truth about this country’s urban schools: their leaders—especially those at the district level—rarely have any stake in whether or not the schools are successes or failures. They’re not a part of those communities, they don’t send their children to the schools they oversee (except, sometimes, the selective admissions-based ones), and at the end of the day, whatever happens doesn’t really affect them. They’re working with other peoples’ children. The only thing they have to lose is their jobs—and that’s easy to protect if they cover their rear, furnish the necessary documentation, and blame those below them...  Were there other problems? Of course there were, but the chronically disruptive atmosphere was by far the most significant and destructive. It’s a problem that’s conspicuously absent from successful suburban schools—which don’t tolerate outrageous misbehavior—and is usually never mentioned by education reformers, policy experts, consultants, and the other people who pretend to know what’s best for our schools.  Perhaps my expectations are too high. After all, how can I expect them to understand the seriousness of this problem if they’ve spent little or no time working in the very schools they pretend to be experts about?"
Discipline is racist, so
Liberal pedagogy at work again. Of course it's self-perpetuating since even more liberal dogma (and money) is called for when results worsen, so it serves its purpose

The Fight Over What Children Learn - "For the first time, Zoom gave parents a window into public school classrooms and many of them didn’t like what they saw. From poor lessons to inappropriate reading material to troubling racial essentialism, parents were roused from their usual passivity to push back against the educational monoculture that dominates school boards, unions, and academic schools of education... Parents want schools open, and they want to know what their kids are being taught.  A key moment in this parental awakening came in early October when Democrat Terry McAuliffe insisted that he didn’t “think parents should be telling schools what they should teach.” This was widely seen as a major turning point during the 2021 race for governor in the very blue state of Virginia. McAuliffe had been leading in the polls, but K–12 parents, in particular, abandoned him en masse, and he ultimately lost to Republican newcomer Glenn Youngkin. This electoral upset exposed—at a national level—the massive gap that had grown between parents on the one hand and pundits, politicians, and teachers’ unions on the other. Parents do want a say in what their children are taught. But not everyone agrees. In December, a New York Times writer stated on Meet the Press, “I don't really understand this idea that parents should decide what's being taught. I'm not a professional educator. I don't have a degree in social studies.”  Well, I am a professional educator. I am a professor of education who teaches teachers, and I can say unequivocally that the belief that one needs to be a professional educator to have meaningful insights as to what ought to be taught reflects a fundamental philosophical and cultural misunderstanding of what education actually is. People who work in the media or in politics tend to assume that their experiences are unquestionably normative. They are almost exclusively college-educated city-dwellers who were good at navigating a system of schooling that is as much networking and conformity as it is algebra and biology. For them, education is and was a predominantly social and cultural reality, the substance of which happens to be made up of academic content. Successfully achieving careers in high-prestige fields, they excelled at what education researchers have termed the “hidden curriculum”—the underlying norms and values that form the backbone of socialization into particular worldviews and practices. And because they (perhaps subconsciously) equate the business of education with this socialization, they tend to see the social values of education as the legitimate enterprise of education professionals, not parents. But there’s something deeply mistaken about this view. “Education”—a noun standing on its own—doesn’t exist. There is no set of concepts, ideas, facts, or skills that are intrinsically necessary for individual human beings to possess. The breakdown of school subjects into math, science, English language arts, and social studies is an accident of history... education is about values, but no educator or education researcher can tell us which values are worthwhile. Indeed, the most significant instance in which educators did impose their values with the force of law resulted in one of the most horrific cultural genocides in US history, as Native Americans were forcibly stripped of their language and culture in “Indian schools” designed to Westernize them. Of course, there are some things that we need from our education system in order to function as a society. We need an education system that will encourage students to grow into law-abiding citizens; we need a system that allows people to flourish and to live happy lives; and we need education that will encourage people to engage in honest work and support their families productively... Pundits and politicians who don’t think parents should have a say in what children are taught are actually attempting to prescribe, in a homogenized, top-down way, a model of life that worked for them... Their appeal to the authority of education researchers is simply a mechanism to entrench a system that validates their life choices and values, but those with other values, interests, and intellectual inclinations will be ill-served by the very same system. This is not specifically an anti-CRT argument. CRT happens to represent the present values of a small segment of mostly upper-class urban elites, but any set of values, when uniformly imposed top-down, will harm children and communities who see the world very differently. The trick these policymakers play is to pretend that their conception of education is not just one choice among many, but is the default baseline, from which anything else is a deviation. The model of life they imagine is based on the myth of an all-purpose education designed by experts to allow every child to choose any future they like. But this has produced an educational system that has left many students with no future; it’s been a failure for all but a select few, precisely because it doesn’t prepare students for all possibilities (an impossibility), but actually reflects the concerns and interests of a small minority of education experts. The idea that those experts, and only those experts, can opine on what to teach and how to teach it is self-serving. Parents sense this and respond accordingly."
The left hate the law (ACAB), happiness (since you're blind to "structures of oppression") and honest work (they think no one should have to work to survive), so what they're doing to education makes sense

Richard Hanania on X - "They gave Chicago public school students free laptops and iPads during the 2021-22 year. 77K were “lost” or stolen for a total value of $23 million. There are 330K public school students in Chicago. That’s about 1 lost device for every 4 students."
Obviously the problem is underfunding, and they need even more money

End Wokeness on X - "EXCLUSIVE: This was an internal memo sent to staff and teachers at Denver Public Schools: "Black Excellence Pledge" Included in this pledge: "Understand the prevalence & deep harm whiteness brings to students" "Equity-based revisions to curriculum" "Work to dismantle the system that allows certain students to excel, others to perish"  It also states that all whites are racist and perpetuate racist ideologies, policies, & practices."

Asian parents claim NY STEM program discriminates against their kids in favor of black, Hispanic students: suit - "while black, Hispanic and Native American students can apply regardless of family wealth — Asian and white schoolkids need to meet certain low-income criteria...   “In other words, the Hispanic child of a multi-millionaire is eligible to apply to STEP, while an Asian American child whose family earns just above the state’s low- income threshold is not, solely because of her race or ethnicity,” the filing states. The allegedly biased admissions criteria have been in place for nearly four decades, the suit claims, adding: “Thirty-nine years of discrimination is enough.”...   “STEP’s expressly race-conscious application process blatantly violates the Constitution’s equal protection guarantee.”"

J.B. Pritzker vs. Catholic Schools - WSJ - "Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker and Democrats in the Legislature killed the Invest in Kids scholarship program last year, blocking money for more than 9,000 low-income students to escape failing public schools. Now comes the second wave of destruction as the schools that welcomed the scholarship students are beginning to close... The point to understand is that this is exactly what the Chicago Teachers Union and their Democratic front men intended in killing the Invest in Kids program. They want private schools to fail so that parents have no choice other than sending their children to union-run schools. It’s a moral and political disgrace."

CBC CEO Catherine Tait shows lack of leadership on question of bonuses - "“The viewership of the CBC is cut in half since you took leadership in 2018. It’s come down by half. So it’s interesting to me that you’re giving bonuses or performance awards, when in fact the CBC is performing the poorest it’s ever performed”... “My question for you, for 2023, will you be given a bonus?” Thomas asked. “It’s not my decision whether I get a get a bonus or not,” Tait finally blurted out after being forced to answer the question. MPs from the Liberals, NDP and Bloc all tried to get Tait to answer questions about bonuses and every time, she claimed she couldn’t answer because it’s not the end of the fiscal year yet. More than once, Tait attempted to say that she has no say over the issue of bonuses despite being the CEO and holding a seat on the board. Let’s be clear, given CBC’s financial situation, given the job cuts that have been announced, given their dismal ratings for a flagship show like CBC’s The National, bonuses are not warranted at this time. How can CBC justify paying $16 million, or even “just” $14.9 million in bonuses when jobs are being cut and Tait is complaining about the state of the company’s finances?"

When Poilievre met Murphy, and the Liberals lost their minds - The Globe and Mail - "About a minute and a half in, before the journalists even got to their excellent “What on earth are you talking about?” questions, you could see the light leave Mr. Gerretsen’s eyes. It was like Wile E. Coyote in a navy suit, racing out beyond the edge of a cliff, then looking down and realizing what he’d done to himself. Gatineau, Que., MP Steven MacKinnon had been standing just off Mr. Gerretsen’s left shoulder, staring at the air a few feet in front of him, as though he already regretted what had not yet happened. Now he joined his colleague at the microphone, listing off policies Poilievre had not announced, and complaining that nobody had asked him questions about these non-things... “What does it say, the fact that you’re holding a press conference to respond to his year-end interviews?” my Globe colleague Marieke Walsh asked, in a delightfully and deservedly impertinent tone. “I mean, how far back on your heels are you that you feel the need to do that?” “What’s your issue here, that he did some friendly interviews?” Stephanie Taylor of The Canadian Press asked, in a similarly are-you-kidding-me voice. “I’m just confused as to why we’re here, and why we’re listening and doing this.” It went on like this for a while. The reporters kept asking the Liberals several different ways if they’d lost their minds. The MPs kept offering, with decreasing enthusiasm and certainty that was both heartbreaking and hilarious, arguments that Mr. Poilievre and the Tories were not to be trusted."

Free parking for teachers: Unfair hidden subsidy, or well-deserved perk? - "The public outcry may have been surprising to some observers. The economic and moral case for charging for parking might have seemed clear cut. There had been little or no public reaction to the AGO’s July 2015 pronouncement that ITE and the two polytechnics should charge users, including their own staff, for parking. Government policies to control the car population have put owning a car out of reach of most Singaporeans, and even those who do drive are likely accustomed to paying for parking, even at their own place of work. Little sympathy for the driving teachers might thus have been expected. And yet, if netizens’ comments were representative, not only teachers but members of the public with no vested interest in the decision were strongly against a change... any do think that teachers are special and more deserving than other civil servants. Furthermore, this argument could equally be an argument for providing free parking to all civil servants, if indeed all were as hardworking or self-sacrificial as teachers. More fundamentally, the civil service does not pay civil servants based on how hardworking or otherwise morally-deserving they are. Instead, it pays civil servants “a salary comparable with that of the private sector for an employee with similar abilities and responsibilities.”... the beneficiaries of this failure to charge market rates already earn more than the average Singaporean, and they have a car, something that most Singaporeans are unable to afford. It seems unfair to help this privileged group at the expense of worse-off Singaporeans... Not all teachers drive to school, whereas all teachers use classrooms and the toilets in school. Hence driving is clearly not necessary for the job, at least not in the sense that classrooms or toilets are. Because classrooms and toilets are truly necessary for the job, nothing could be achieved by charging teachers for their use, whereas there are reasons, to be discussed shortly, for wanting to charge teachers for parking in school... many of those who do not drive to work may be unable to afford a car, perhaps because they are more junior staff, or in less well-remunerated schemes of service. Even among employees who do the same job and earn the same amount, those who do not own a car may be those who have a lower family income, or more dependants. If these reasonable assumptions hold, free parking would be a regressive benefit because only the more well-off members of the staff can benefit from it, not unlike a staff subsidy for luxury watches or expensive vacations. Even among employees who have a car and are equally well-off, some may not drive to work, for reasons unrelated to their value as an employee; for example, another household member may need the car more, or the employee may find taking public transport less stressful. Even if not outright unfair, it seems at least arbitrary to give a driving employee a parking subsidy without giving a non-driving employee an equivalent amount in public transport subsidies"
From 2016. What they should've done was give all teachers a raise equivalent to the cost of parking

Carolina Shiino's Miss Japan win sparks debate on Japanese identity - "A model who was born in Ukraine has been crowned Miss Japan, sparking controversy and reigniting a debate over Japanese identity. Carolina Shiino, 26, won the 2024 Miss Nippon Grand Prix pageant on Monday. The model moved to Japan when she was five and has lived there since, becoming a naturalized citizen in 2022. Shiino said she has as strong a sense of Japanese identity as anyone else, despite not having Japanese heritage... Shiino's crowning triggered a debate over whether she should represent Japan, with some on social media contending that she should not have been selected when she isn't ethnically Japanese, even if she grew up in Japan. Others disagreed, arguing her Japanese citizenship makes her Japanese. Growing up, Shiino said she had difficulty because of the gap between how she is treated because of her foreign appearance and her self-identity as Japanese. But she said working as a model has given her confidence. “I may look different, but I have unwavering confidence that I am Japanese,” she said... In 2015, Ariana Miyamoto became the first biracial person to represent Japan in the Miss Universe contest, leading critics to question whether someone with a mixed racial background should represent Japan."
A lot of people (Americans who don't understand the difference between race and nationality) were upset over this, but these people didn't seem upset when Miss Zimbabwe was white

Ukrainian-born Miss Japan relinquishes crown following alleged affair - "Karolina Shiino, the first person of predominantly European heritage ever to win the Miss Nippon contest (which takes its title from the country’s Japanese name), announced her decision to step down on Monday following local newspaper allegations of an affair with a married man... “If the Miss Nippon contest is based on the concept of beauty, I personally wish that it would be based on standards of Japanese beauty,” historian Hiroe Yamashita wrote on X following Shiino’s victory. “But With Karolina Shiino’s appearance, an (ethnically) Japanese girl has no chance of winning under the modern values of beauty.”"
The left wing anti-Semites keep claiming that Jews are European (i.e. white), and the right wing anti-Semites keeps insisting that they're not
If Japanese beauty standards are unique to Japan, Miss Japan will never win a worldwide competition

The Puzzle of Identifying as Chinese - The New York Times - "Much has changed since China began opening up to the world following the death of Mao Zedong in 1976. But deeply held cultural beliefs predating that isolationist era persist. These include that laowai, or “old outsiders,” as non-Chinese are often called, are fundamentally different and can therefore never become Chinese, no matter how long their residency, recent books and interviews with writers specializing in cross-cultural issues suggest... “I think the difference is related to this: Can you even accept a foreigner as quite Chinese?” she continued, speaking by telephone from Cambridge, Massachusetts. “To some Chinese people who are quite modern, the answer is yes. But to many, they feel you have to be culturally Chinese, and that’s much deeper than anything you can acquire by yourself.” “As soon as you adopt something for yourself, you’re not Chinese,” she said. “Chineseness does not involve choice.” Many Chinese have become American but few Americans have become Chinese. Of course, unlike the United States, China is not an immigrant nation... Even serious accounts of the lives of foreigners in China, who number probably in the hundreds of thousands, express doubt about assimilation. Take “Their China,” a book published in Chinese by Joy Yue Xi, born in China of Manchurian descent, now living in Canada with her husband and two young children. Out in August, it contains interviews with 18 non-Chinese living here. (Disclosure: I am one of the subjects.) On the cover it says: “They are spectators. And are players. But in the end, they are still spectators.”... “Those words were my publisher’s. I feel it shows a judgment in China about foreigners, but I wouldn’t myself generalize like that. There is some truth to it, but it doesn’t represent all people. But I think it does represent what most Chinese people think.”... If non-Chinese — or not fully Chinese, like Ms. Ma — are not truly accepted, there’s a seemingly contradictory, flip side to the mind-set: Even part-Chinese are not allowed to stop being Chinese... Being a member of the Chinese nation revolves around an idea of a “shared fate,” she said, something the state and many Chinese see as rooted in race and birth. For Ms. Jen, it’s all about identity, whether inherited or invented. In China, she said, it’s mostly inherited, putting foreigners largely beyond the pale. “Even in the U.S.A., there’s a tension between the self that is invented and the self that is inherited,” she said. “But in China, it’s 20 percent of one and 80 percent of another,” whereas in America, “it’s the opposite!”"

That time an actor didn't break character whilst being stabbed - "While the 2004 Punisher movie isn’t exactly a classic, it’s not without its charm and an admirable amount of effort was made to remain as faithful to the source material as possible. A fact that resulted in the casting of Kevin Nash, a wrestler turned actor who was literally stabbed during a fight scene and walked it off like it was nothing... there’s a moment in the fight scene where the Punisher ineffectually stabs the Russian and he just, laughs it off like a badass. A shot that was supposed to be realised with a fake knife that a stagehand forgot to swap out for the real one they were using for closeup shots. Reportedly because they were too busy hitting on a girl off camera, which Nash, amazingly, found quite funny instead of being annoyed about. More important though is that Nash stayed in character while being stabbed and he didn’t even realise that it happened until he glanced down and saw the blood. Here’s the thing though because the story somehow gets more badass because whilst the knife was real, it was altered to make it slightly safer to handle. Which you’d assume would make being stabbed hurt less until you realise that it means Nash stabbed with a blunt knife and didn’t even give a shit. A wound it’s worth noting Nash didn’t have treated at a hospital, instead opting to superglue it shut and finish the scene. As you might expect, Jane was quietly shitting himself about accidentally stabbing a near 7 foot tall man being paid money to manhandle him for a week straight and for the most part, these fears were unfounded and Nash didn’t do anything to get the actor. Well except for knocking him the fuck out by throwing him through a brick wall. Then again, we’ve all been there."

Staples ServiceOntario: Locations to open Feb. - "The new centres are part of a three-year pilot program launched by Ontario Premier Doug Ford's government with the aim of bettering customer service and increasing convenience... “Not everyone can make it into one of the outlets from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.,” he said. “It’s pretty simple. It comes down to customer service.” According to the sample hours of the new centres provided by the government, the new locations will open at 9 a.m. and close between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. on weekdays. On Saturdays they will be open between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m... The government has said that putting ServiceOntario kiosks inside Staples retail stores will save taxpayers about $900,000 over three years... the cost differences are primarily from the leases, they say are covered through a funding arrangement with the province. Officials said they were able to negotiate with Staples Canada to get the leasing costs down to a level that enables savings."
Of course, political partisans don't care and just want to hate on Doug Ford, even if he's saving taxpayers money. They also hate the private sector, so this must be bad

Canada's quiet descent into neofeudalism - "Canada’s real GDP per capita, a measure of economic activity per individual, has barely budged—and may be lower at the end of 2024 than in 2015. It means Canada has the poorest performance in the G7 and the second lowest among 35 OECD “wealthy” countries. Grimly, in 2022 the OECD predicted a generation-long stagnation, estimating this country would have the slowest per capita growth rate of members through 2060. It should be unsurprising that Canada’s housing crisis and economic stagnation have occurred at the same time. The escalating cost of housing takes disposable income from the economy and stifles entrepreneurial activity by reducing risk-taking. No wonder Canadians are starting businesses at the lowest rate in decades... The outcome is a regulatory system developed in collaboration with existing economic winners that justify new rules as “in the public interest” but instead create barriers to entry for competition. This process, called “regulatory capture,” has far-reaching effects on the Canadian economy. It has led to an environment that is counterproductive to innovation, equitable growth, investment, and our long-term prosperity. Canada’s innovation and productivity hurdles, often attributed to a “conservative business culture,” are more accurately the result of decisions by rational actors in sectors insulated from competition. This “risk-averse” attitude and reluctance to invest are not inherent but stem from a lack of competitive necessity. There’s little incentive for businesses to undertake risky capital-intensive investments when their peers are equally reliably cautious and the threat from new entrants is low. This also explains the hesitancy of large Canadian firms to partner with domestic startups, unlike their American counterparts who actively engage with new ideas to stay ahead competitively. Furthermore, the excuse of Canada’s “small domestic market” is similarly misleading. As the world’s 9th largest economy by nominal GDP with extensive trade agreements, Canada’s “small market” is instead a by-product of self-imposed constraints and regulatory barriers that protect domestic industries. For instance, inter-provincial trade barriers that exist due largely to the influence of special interest groups are estimated to raise the cost of goods by seven percent, impeding our economy’s full potential. Thus, Canada’s challenges in productivity and investment are not a result of a “conservative business mindset,” but rather a consequence of rational choices in private industry dominated by economic fiefdoms awarded by the government... One study by the University of California, Berkeley, found that restrictive housing policies in just New York City and the San Francisco Bay Area, home to a mere 9 percent of the American population, slashed national income by 36 percent over 45 years. Translated to Canada, it amounts to a staggering annual loss of over $19,000 for the average Canadian worker. Given that the Greater Toronto and Vancouver areas account for over 30 percent of Canada’s population, coupled with the accelerating exodus of top talent to the United States, the economic toll on the country could be more severe."

Joss Whedon and writing what you know - "Back when "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" was on TV, I couldn't help but notice that none of the relationships in the series went well. It didn't matter what the context, they all went south. Okay, it was a show about angsty teenagers, but the spin-off went the same way. So did "Firefly," both on the show and in the subsequent movie. Now I get the value of having drama and working long-term relationships can be awfully dull, but there is some use in having a stable romantic relationship as a baseline which can operate in contrast to the other tormented ones. Whedon never did this, and I always wondered why. Subsequently we learned that his relationship with his wife was rather difficult. Not only that, but apparently he had a casting couch and used it frequently. Setting aside his blatant hypocrisy in claiming to be a feminist while exploiting his talent for sexual gain and degrading his long-suffering wife, I think this is the key to understanding why the relationships in his work ended up the way they did. Put simply, he didn't know what a good relationship looked like and apparently couldn't imagine one, either. When he did have one (in "Firefly") he killed off one of the characters. Even happiness became unhappy."

Vavilovian mimicry - Wikipedia - "a weed evolves to share one or more characteristics with a domesticated plant through generations of artificial selection... Rye was originally just a weed growing with wheat and barley, but came under similar selective pressures to the crops. Like wheat, it came to have larger seeds and more rigid spindles to which the seeds are attached... This fate is shared by oats (Avena sativa and Avena byzantina), which also tolerate poorer conditions, and like rye, grow as a weed alongside wheat and barley. Derived from a wild species (Avena sterilis), it has thus come to be a crop in its own right."

‘Hostility against Sharia is hostility against Islam," says Turkey’s Erdoğan - "“If you look at history books, you will see that Turk equals Muslim,” Erdoğan asserted and criticized any notion that sought to build “artificial walls” between the two. He continued, “A definition of Turkishness without the inclusion of Islam’s holy war spirit is merely an attempt to turn the Turkish nation into a folklore tale.” Erdoğan suggested the unidentified enemy’s goal was to “disrupt the fabric of society, and occupy the castle they have surrounded.” "Shariaphobia" was yet another step in this scheme, the President opined. “Sharia represents the entirety of Islam’s rules on life,” Erdoğan said and warned against who “dared to criticize” it. Ignorance was at the root of the fearlessness against Sharia, according to Erdoğan, who felt sorrow to see a section of society drowning in this “darkness of ignorance.”"

Japanese Man, 35, Has 4 Wives And 2 Girlfriends, Hasn’t Worked In 10 Years As He Lives Off Them - "People, mostly men, generally get offended when they are accused of living off their spouses. That’s not the case for 35-year-old Watanabe Ryuta, a self-professed expert when it comes to mooching off his four wives and two girlfriends... Ryuta basically plays the role of a househusband. He is in charge of preparing everyone's meals, doing household chores, and looking after his kids... Ryuta said he “simply likes women”. “When I realised that, we were already living in such an arrangement. As long as we all love each other equally, there wouldn't be an issue,” he said. The wives who live with him have their own rooms, and he takes turns to sleep with a different wife every night. His goal is to break the record for having the most kids in Japan. Japanese Shogun Tokugawa Ienari, who lived in the late 1700s to early 1800s, is the record to beat. He is said to have a 53 children. Ryuta said: “I want to overtake him. As such, I want to have 54 children, so my name can go down in history. I am still searching for a new wife.”... Despite Ryuta’s plans for a massive family, there are legal limitations he has to deal with. Japan’s marriage laws do not allow for polygamy, and Ryuta cannot be legally married to more than one woman at a time. He marries whomever is next in line to become his wife, then divorces her so he is legally able to wed the next woman again. Ryuta, his wife, and his “ex-wives” then live together, following the rules of “an actual marriage”."

Meme - Palestinian Youth Movement (PYM): "OTTAWA: ALL OUT FOR PALESTINE. Last night, the resistance in Gaza led a heroic attack against the occupation and has taken occupation soldiers hostages including Brigadier General Nimrom Aloni. Their march toward liberation is as monumental as their rockets - the resistance will free the prisoners who have been facing a fascist attack by the occupation and liberate our land from the fangs of the enemy. The resistance has set a new precedent for the Palestinian struggle - our right to resist the occupation, to defend the land, and to free our prisoners are the utmost priorities. We call on our people in Ottawa and in the far diaspora to celebrate the resistance's success, to uplift their calls, and to march this Sunday Oct 8 at at the Human Rights Monument (220 Elgin St). Victory is ours."
Why do the "Pro-Palestinian" crowd so often turn out to be terrorist supporters?
Nothing says "human rights" like attacking civilians and holding them hostage

Al Jazeera journalist outed as Hamas commander by IDF - ""In the morning, he’s a journalist on the   Al Jazeera   channel, and in the evening, a terrorist in Hamas!” Lt. Col. Avichay Adraee, the IDF’s Arabic-language spokesman, tweeted on Sunday. According to Adraee, troops operating in northern Gaza several weeks ago found a laptop at a Hamas base that belonged to Mohamed Washah, who has appeared in   Al Jazeera   broadcasts since the Oct. 7 massacre... the IDF presented evidence that two   Palestinian journalists   killed in Gaza in an Israeli airstrike were terrorist operatives, and said that they were operating drones that put soldiers at risk... a document that the IDF posted to social media appears to prove that Thuria was a Hamas operative. The document lists him as a deputy squad commander in a battalion of the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades, the terror group’s “military wing.” Other documents found by the IDF indicate that Dadough was a Palestinian Islamic Jihad operative whose specialty is electronic engineering and who previously served as a deputy commander of a platoon in the Zaytoun Battalion. Before his death, he was in charge of a section of PIJ’s rocket unit. Additionally, Israel said that Dadough had carried out terrorist attacks against Israel."

Australia to ban doxxing after pro-Palestinian activists publish information about hundreds of Jews - "Pro-Palestinian activists distributed a nearly-900 page transcript that leaked from a private WhatsApp formed last year by Jewish writers, artists, musicians and academics, Nine newspapers reported last week. The transcript was accompanied by a spreadsheet that contained the names and other personal details of almost 600 people, purportedly the group's membership. Author Clementine Ford, who was one of several activists who posted links to the leaked information, said that it shouldn't be considered doxxing... The Australian government’s online safety watchdog defines doxxing, which is also known as “dropping dox” or documents, as the “intentional online exposure of an individual’s identity, private information or personal details without their consent.”"
It's only doxxing when it hurts the left. If you leak the details of terrorism supporters, they will be very upset

Egypt on edge as Israel’s war presses more than a million Palestinians up against its border - "Egypt has already condemned Israel’s move to push Palestinians southward in the enclave, suggesting it is part of a plan to expel Gazans and that it would spell the end of the Palestinian cause... For Egypt, the prospect of millions of Palestinians pouring into the country brings memories of the 2008 border crisis, when hundreds of Gazans stormed into Egypt after the border wall was blown out and torn down. The Palestinians had been running out of fuel, food and other supplies after Israel closed Gaza’s border crossings. Egypt has said that since the war began, the Rafah crossing was bombed at least four times on the Palestinian side. In October, Egypt blocked the gates of the crossing with concrete slabs."
Clearly, Egypt isn't letting them in to prevent "ethnic cleansing", which is why Western countries need to let in the entire population of Gaza, or they're monsters

Toronto police increase presence along hospital row after pro-Palestinian protest - "Toronto police say they are increasing their presence along hospital row after a pro-Palestinian protest downtown on Monday night, including outside Mount Sinai Hospital... Jesse Kline: Amira Elghawaby defends antisemitic protest in front of Toronto hospital - "Amira Elghawaby, Canada’s Islamophobia czar, who used the opportunity to excuse the protesters’ reprehensible actions and opine on geopolitical issues...  Like the weeks-long protest at the Avenue Road overpass , in the heart of one of the country’s largest Jewish neighbourhoods, the targeting of Mount Sinai was clearly intended to send the message that these demonstrators are not merely voicing their opposition to a foreign government, but to Jews in general.  Not that the protesters themselves would ever admit this, as doing so would expose them to hate crime charges. The group Toronto4Palestine said that Mount Sinai “just happens to be along our regular rally route.” How were they supposed to know it’s the one hospital in that area with strong ties to the Jewish community?   It’s not hard to see through their thinly veiled excuses, but that hasn’t stopped their fellow travellers from putting on blinders and coming to their defence — including Elghawaby, Canada’s “special representative on combating Islamophobia.” Taking to the social media platform formerly known as Twitter on Tuesday, Elghawaby noted that blocking the entrance to a public hospital was “troubling,” but also criticized “the rush to label protesters as antisemitic and/or terrorist sympathizers.”   Never mind that they deliberately targeted an institution with Jewish roots. Never mind that signs could clearly be seen portraying terrorists as freedom fighters. And never mind that they were loudly chanting , “Long live the intefadeh,” a reference to the two Palestinian uprisings, in which hundreds of Israeli civilians were killed in suicide bombings and other terrorist attacks, many of which were committed by Hamas, the perpetrator of the Oct. 7 massacre.  You’d think that someone whose job is to combat hatred would be the first to denounce a hate-filled rally such as this, even if it was antisemitism being espoused, rather than Islamophobia. But according to Elghawaby, such displays should only be condemned “if police determine any action was motivated by hate.” (Which is a little hard to do since we can’t read minds, and highlights the folly of creating a separate class of crimes that are dependant on the thought processes of the perpetrators.)   What Elghawaby claims the “demonstrators were actually protesting” was the “indiscriminate killing of any and all innocent men, women and children.” Which is an interesting way to phrase it. Yes, the number of Palestinians who have been killed in Gaza is far too high. But no, Israel is not indiscriminately killing innocent civilians. It is deliberately targeting Hamas terrorists, who are putting innocents at risk by embedding themselves in civilian areas and using civilian infrastructure for military purposes.  According to our Islamophobia czar, “Anyone who condemns one but not the other” — i.e., condemns antisemitic protests here at home but not Israel’s actions overseas — “is demonstrating to all of us how Islamophobia and anti-Palestinian racism operate to devalue the lives of those deemed less than human and unworthy of protections, including those afforded by international humanitarian law.”  The implication is that Israel is violating international law (which no one has been able to prove, because it’s not), and that anyone who supports the Jewish state in its war against Hamas — the terrorist group that indiscriminately slaughtered civilians and weaponized sexual violence on a mass scale on Oct. 7 and is still holding around 100 hostages who are being subjected to torture and rape — is somehow guilty of being a racist...   Part of Elghawaby’s mandate is to promote “public awareness and understanding about Muslim communities in Canada by reframing narratives.” It would seem as though she’s taken that directive to heart, reframing hate rallies as peaceful demonstrations and advocates of violence as victims of oppression.  It wasn’t until the end of her lengthy Twitter rant that the special representative actually discussed hate crimes perpetrated against Muslim-Canadians. Citing instances of anti-Muslim graffiti and a woman who was assaulted, Elghawaby suggested that the focus on antisemitism is evidence of a doubled standard, and asks, “Where are the condemnations of these acts?”   It’s not true that Islamophobic acts aren’t being condemned — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau seems wholly incapable of denouncing acts of anti-Jewish hate without mentioning those targeting Muslims. Accusations of a “double standard” are also disingenuous since far more hate is being directed toward Jews. But Elghawaby is right that hatred perpetrated against Muslims should be condemned in equally strong terms. So let me do so now:  Hate-filled messages, acts of vandalism and physical violence perpetrated against Muslim-Canadians is abhorrent and completely unacceptable. What is happening in Israel and Gaza is troubling to both Jews and Muslims. Rather than importing hatreds from overseas, we must find ways to support our fellow Canadians and live together in peace.  It wouldn’t have been hard for Elghawaby to issue a statement like that, but she has never been much of a bridge-builder. Days after her appointment to the newly created position in January 2023, Elghawaby came under fire in Quebec for having said that “a majority of Quebecers” were motivated by “anti-Muslim sentiment.”  When Trudeau appointed her, he said she would help fight “hatred in all its forms” and build “a country where everyone feels safe and respected.” Instead, she is excusing the actions of those who are espousing hatred and making Jews feel unsafe.  Perhaps her title should be changed to “special representative on promoting balkanization.” Or better yet, maybe we should get rid of a political position that was only ever intended to help Trudeau court a specific subset of voters."
If combating "Islamophobia" means being anti-Semitic...

Trudeau's failure of moral leadership on violence against Jews - "Trudeau seems unable to help himself. He continued: “We have to remember who we are. I know emotions are running high — that people are fearful, they’re in mourning. But to attack one another as Canadians, it’s not what we do.”  Is he suggesting that being “in mourning” is a possible justification for what happened?... And this was not the first time Trudeau has watered down his comments about violence against Canadian Jews. It wasn’t even the first time he did it this week... Trudeau can’t just denounce antisemitism on its own. In his very next breath, he condemned the “rise of Islamophobia we’re seeing across this country.”... We have not seen any protests taking place outside of mosques or Palestinian-owned shawarma restaurants. That would be unthinkable to most Canadian Jews. Normally, I would refrain from reading too much into a politician’s off-the-cuff comments. Indeed, I gave Trudeau the benefit of the doubt when he said that the Al-Ahli hospital bombing was “absolutely unacceptable” immediately after it occurred.  Because bombing a hospital is unacceptable and I get that might be the first thing that pops into your head when a reporter sticks a microphone in your face on your way to work and asks what you think of a hospital bombing.  But it quickly became clear that senior government ministers were intent on blaming the Jewish state. They didn’t call Israel out by name, but it was clear enough from their frequent references to “international humanitarian law,” which Hamas obviously has no intention of abiding by. And even after it was definitively proven that Israel was not at fault, Trudeau stayed quiet. For most of the past month, Trudeau has seemed unable to discuss the Oct. 7 attack without suggesting that Israel’s campaign in Gaza is somehow equivalent... For a leader who has spent much of his tenure denouncing racism and obsessed with identity politics, it may seem somewhat paradoxical that Trudeau is unable to take a clear stand now. Until you realize that Israel’s enemies hold much more sway at the ballot box"

NYU is split: A campus divided over Israel's war in Gaza - "Parker found herself marching in a protest where she saw friends on both sides of the conflict yelling and screaming at each other. For Parker, the middle ground has been lost. “I am not radically pro-Palestine enough because I think that Israel should exist, and I am not radically Zionist enough because I think that Gaza and its people shouldn’t be obliterated,” she said. At the same protest, a non-NYU associated anti-Israel protester held up a sign depicting the Star of David in a trash can which went viral in NYU social media circles. Parker said that anti-Jewish sentiment, along with the spread of extremist ideology and chants, have been common at these protests... In some cases, Jewish students said they didn’t feel safe on campus. “Students were told to leave through back entrances and exits from buildings and to avoid certain parts of campus on certain days,” Aiello said... The NYU Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP), a significant pro-Palestinian group on campus, has been highly engaged in hosting seminars, protests, and sit-ins. Their key demand revolves around advocating for a complete severance of ties between NYU-New York and NYU Tel Aviv. This stance extends to supporting suspended students, such as Hafiza Khalique, notably involved in removing Israeli hostage posters on campus... They say that Palestinians whose families have been expelled from Israel in 1948 or 1967 would not be able to obtain Israeli visas to study in Tel Aviv. That would violate the university’s Code of Ethical Conduct. NYU Tel Aviv Director Benjamin Hary said that these claims are false. “NYU Tel Aviv has not had one visa refusal in its 13 years of existence,” he said, and that includes students that were Palestinian and had Lebanese and Syrian passports."
It's no surprise that terrorism supporters support Israeli hostages being taken and lie about the visa situation
Left wingers mock those who oppose and protest against the left wing agenda for not focusing on bread and butter issues like the cost of living (weird how those pushing the left wing agenda aren't criticised for that). But they are silent when it comes to protests supporting terrorists in other countries

Court of Injustice: How Israel gets victim blamed at the ICJ - "Why is South Africa leading the charge against Israel? Politics, of course. In 1994, in South Africa’s first post-apartheid election, the African National Congress (ANC) under Nelson Mandela was elected. It has ruled ever since, for almost 30 years, today holding 230 seats out of 400 in its parliament – and lately, ruled very badly. In South Africa, there are frequent power outages, shortages of water, over 40% unemployment, rampant crime, and widespread corruption. South Africa ranks 72nd in the world in Transparency International’s “freedom from corruption” index. A parliamentary report stated that President Cyril Ramaphosa “illegally hid a large sum of money in undeclared foreign currency at his farm in 2020” (a sofa stuffed with cash). South Africa’s 60 million people are poor, with per capita GDP of $7,000, down sharply from $9,000 in 2010, despite its rich natural resources. National elections will be held this year. The ANC is in trouble. Polls show the ANC getting below 50%. What to do? Divert attention from the mess ANC created, with some ICJ theater. Why does South Africa trumpet the case for Hamas? Nelson Mandela supported the Palestinian cause. But he also evenhandedly supported Israel’s right to exist. South African Blacks have embraced the narrative that Israel imposes apartheid on Palestinians. It goes back over 60 years, when the architect of South African apartheid, prime minister Hendrik Verwoerd, attacked Israel’s vote against apartheid in the UN... South Africa has lined up solidly with the Russia-China-Iran axis, which actively supports Hamas. And Russia has, in turn, invested heavily in South Africa... the ICJ judges are each sent by their country and, as such, are expected to reflect the policies and values of their respective nations. Based on politics, expect Somalia, China, Morocco, Russia, and Lebanon to vote for South Africa. Four of these five are blatant genocide perpetrators. Russia forcibly transferred Ukrainian children to Russia, hundreds of them. Lebanon hosts Hezbollah, declaredly out to destroy Israel. China is systematically persecuting the Muslim Uighurs. And Somalia hosts the murderous Al-Shabab, an affiliate of al-Qaeda, perpetrators of 9/11. Russia wins the gold medal for chutzpah. In September, Russia alleged at the ICJ, where its representative is deputy president, that Ukraine “engaged in genocide in Eastern Ukraine” to justify its murderous attack... South Africa’s 84-page indictment included quotes from far-Right Israeli Knesset members. Shaw asserted that “choosing random quotes not in conformity with government policy is misleading” and does not reflect the war cabinet’s decisions and actions. Shaw and Noam both stressed that Israel has a robust legal system, able to investigate on its own whether individual crimes were committed and the laws of war violated... Staker asked what would have happened had the Allies been accused of genocide committed in World War II? (On February 13-15 of 1945, hundreds of US and British bombers fire-bombed the city of Dresden, 100 miles south of Berlin, killing 25,000. The US military estimated that in Japan, 70,000 people were killed in Hiroshima, and 40,000 in Nagasaki after atom bombs were dropped on them on August 6 and 9, 1945; those numbers are underestimates.) Every day, Israel provides and facilitates food, water, fuel, electricity, and other necessities to the Gaza population. I wonder, in which war in history did the nation that was attacked and massacred face demands to feed the people that assaulted it while it defended itself? Name one... In 17 years, the UNHRC has condemned Israel 103 times – and zero for China, Saudi Arabia or Venezuela. In 2022, the UN General Assembly passed 15 resolutions condemning Israel, but not a single one on human rights violations in Venezuela, China, Saudi Arabia, Cuba, Turkey, Egypt, Zimbabwe, Pakistan, Qatar, Vietnam or Algeria. Iran? Once... Why is this a blatant case of blaming the victim? US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that the South African charge that Israeli committed genocide “is particularly galling, given that those attacking Israel – Hamas, Hezbollah, the Houthis – as well as their supporter Iran, continue to openly call for the annihilation of Israel and the mass murder of Jews.”"

Meme - Kirk Lubimov @KirkLubimov: "Toronto Police's media relationship officer has deleted her post and her account after being ratioed into oblivion trying to rationalize Toronto Police officers delivering coffee and food to Hamas sympathizers who been blocking roads illegally for weeks and intimidating the Jewish community there. "Performing a helpful act"."
Laura Brabant: "Our officers are managing a dynamic situation. In performing a helpful act today, our officer's motivation was to help keep lensions low and should not be interpreted as showing support for any cause or group. Our officers continue to work to de-escalate these demonstrations"

Toronto's overpass of antisemitic depravity - "Liberal MP Marco Mendicino tweeted that such actions “will just embolden more deliberate obstruction of traffic.… Laws exist to prevent this. They need to be enforced!”  Which is a little rich coming from a man who, as public safety minister, oversaw the first-ever invocation of the Emergencies Act to crack down on the Freedom Convoy protests in Ottawa — demonstrations that also could have been contained by … enforcing existing traffic laws. Perhaps we should give Mendicino the benefit of the doubt and assume he learned a lesson from the Liberals’ heavy-handed approach to that situation — a decision that continues to haunt them politically.  More likely is that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is inclined to pussyfoot around demonstrations by politically favoured groups — such as the Indigenous-led protests in early 2020 that shut down many of the country’s railways and today’s pro-Palestinian rallies — and crack down hard on those that vehemently oppose his government.  As disruptive as the anti-Israel demonstrations across the country have been, they have not reached the level of the Freedom Convoy, which blocked border crossings and brought downtown Ottawa to a standstill for weeks.  Yet for all of Trudeau’s remarks about the convoy being a “fringe minority” with “unacceptable views,” and its use of “Nazi symbolism” and “racist imagery,” the pro-Palestinian protests, which have now morphed into anti-Jewish demonstrations, have been far more vile.  A video circulating on social media shows an Avenue Road demonstrator telling someone, identified by a fellow protester as a “Zionist” (i.e., Jewish), to “go back to Poland, go back to Russia, go back to Ukraine.” Another features a Palestinian activist telling pro-Israel counter-protesters to, “Go back to your f–king countries where you came from.” A sign was also seen on the Avenue Road overpass equating Zionism to Nazism — a ridiculous comparison given that the Jews were the victims of the Nazi genocide and Hamas’s Oct. 7 massacre, and are now being targeted by protesters who have set up camp in one of the city’s largest Jewish neighbourhoods.  This is the most reprehensible aspect of this demonstration. The site is about 10 kilometres away from the provincial legislature and almost equally as far from the Israeli consulate. But it right in the heart of one of Canada’s largest Jewish communities, within walking distance of numerous synagogues, kosher restaurants, Jewish community centres and other institutions.  No one should be under any illusions: this is a demonstration, not against the actions of a foreign government, but against the Canadian Jewish community. And it is part of a broader pattern that has seen patrons of Jewish-owned businesses harassed and intimidated, shots fired at two Montreal Jewish schools, the firebombing of two Montreal-area community institutions, including a synagogue, and, most recently, the vandalization and arson of International Delicatessen Foods, a Jewish-owned grocery store in north Toronto... If Marco Mendicino is really interested in dealing with this situation in any sort of coherent manner, his government would be well advised to do what it should have done after the railway blockades of 2020 and start working with municipal and provincial governments and law enforcement agencies to come up with a standard set of protocols for dealing with protesters intent on blocking transportation infrastructure that doesn’t impede on the Charter rights of Canadians."

Suddenly Toronto resembles Germany in 1938 - "I was contacted recently by the parent of young, Jewish children who have been bullied in school by Muslim kids. These children have told their Jewish peers that they will do to them what Hamas did to Jews in Israel. The school and police recommended a chat with the bullies’ parents.  Right.  “Don’t look me in the eye,” said another young Muslim schoolchild to a Jewish student. “You are not a Muslim. You must look down at the ground when speaking with me.”  These are school age children... When we see tens of thousands of people “protest” publicly and call for the annihilation of the State of Israel and the killing of Jews; when we see Jewish-owned businesses targeted, threatened and vandalized, and there are no consequences, well, this permissiveness empowers the antisemites. Their hatred of Jews is validated. There is no social, political or legal censure.  There are, in fact, legal limits to free expression and many of these “protesters” have breached them. But no one seems to care. Same with threatening Jewish business owners and patrons and vandalizing said establishments. Still. Silence... Around Toronto in recent days I have seen more than a few scrawled warnings about Kristallnacht coming. Here. Similar comments are all over social media."

Women live in a neurotic hell - on Female Neuroticism

Not everything in here is accurate, but this has a lot of insights:

Women live in a neurotic hell : sincereseduction

Men often cannot understand why womens’ sexual attraction is linked to a desire for emotional experiences. Why does a woman need a man to have fun? Why can a woman not make fun emotional experiences on her own? And what do emotional experiences have to do with women getting horny? Obviously, men also like women who are fun, interesting, and adventurous, but most men would still be sexually attracted to a beautiful woman if she was boring, anxious, and dumb as a bag of rocks. Women are different. A woman can have no desire to have sex with a man, but then spend an afternoon walking around a museum watching him confidently make fun of the paintings and then want to fuck his brains out afterwards. Why?

I was personally perplexed by womens’ need for fun emotional experiences because I did not understand why I always needed to make things “fun” for women. I noticed my approaches were much more effective when I was fun, high-energy, and positive, but the moment an interaction started to get boring or stale, I could feel the woman emotionally checking out and her attention slowly drifting away. I was confused. If a woman “liked” me, why did I need to create emotional fireworks? When I was around my guy friends, I could just drink a bunch of beers and watch the game saying nothing at all. Why couldn’t I do that with women? Why did I need “game” or to “hold frame” or any of the bullshit this place is about? Also, why could I not tell her about my problems and fears like guys in the movies do? These questions perplexed me because, like most men, I expected womens’ sexual attraction to be like mens’ sexual attraction, which it is not.

I soon learned that emotional experiences drive womens’ sexual attraction because women are much, much, much, more neurotic than men and evolved to rely on the alpha male for positive emotion. In fact, whether a man can alleviate a woman’s neuroticism is the primary way she evolved to recognize the alpha male. If a woman feels bored, unsafe, or other negative emotions around a man, or worse – if she senses that the man himself feels negative emotion – evolution is telling her to get away from him and find the real alpha male. Women can obviously feel positive emotion without men, but the alpha male provides women feelings of power, confidence, fun, status, and freedom from anxiety that women cannot generate on their own. In fact, I would say that the core of the masculine-feminine polarity is the attraction between the negative, insecure, cautious woman and the confident, positive alpha male.

The word “neurotic” simply means “sensitive to negative emotion.” According to the psychologist Edmund Thompson, “individuals with high scores for neuroticism are more likely than average to be moody and to experience such feelings as anxiety, worry, fear, anger, frustration, envy, jealousy, guilt, depressed mood, and loneliness.” Studies show that women consistently score higher than men on neuroticism tests and suffer from anxiety and depression at more than twice the rate of men. Feminists and other social constructionists often claim that women score higher on neuroticism tests because life in the modern world is worse for women, and they may be correct to some degree, but it seems clear that at least part of womens’ neuroticism is inherent in their biology.

Aside from science, you can tell women are neurotic by just observing them. Women freak out about small things and remote threats, they are terrified of transgressing boundaries and making people upset, they cry at work, they are disproportionately affected about innocuous comments and minor insults, and they often obsessively focus on the worst possible thing that can happen in every situation. Not all women are neurotic in the same way or degree, but overall, the average woman is much more neurotic than the average man.

Women are neurotic because the two strongest positive emotions to human beings are 1) the feeling of venturing into the unknown, defeating challenges, and getting the things you want (adventure), and 2) the feeling of being accepted by the tribe (acceptance). Women are unable to generate these emotions on their own, which is why they are dependent on the alpha male for these core elements of their happiness. Women are physically weaker than men and responsible for taking care of babies, so they evolved to be afraid of the unknown, averse to any kind of confrontation (especially physical combat), hyper-sensitive to threats, and terrified of being rejected by the tribe. Of course, if there is no alpha male around and women were absolutely forced to take the lead and fight the bad guys, they can do so, they will just feel a lot more negative emotion doing it.

From an evolutionary standpoint, womens’ neuroticism is a feature, not a bug. The last thing evolution wants is for women to wander the jungle alone or directly confront bad guys, so it instilled a powerful compulsion in them to stay in the territory of the tribe and venture into the unknown only under the protection of the alpha male. Women can contribute to the tribe in many ways so long as they do not take the lead because leading requires the emotional fortitude to confront challenges head-on. Leadership also requires one to take responsibility for the tribe’s success or failure, and women do not want that responsibility because they cannot take the risk that the tribe will turn on them and reject them for failing.

Negative emotions are basically alarm systems designed to alert us when there is a threat or when it thinks we are going to do something that would cause the tribe to reject us. In women, this alarm system is constantly going off, whether or not there is a real problem. Womens’ neuroticism is like lightning; it often strikes out of nowhere (influenced by hormones or other triggers) and sometimes goes away just as quickly when somebody convinces her that everything will be ok. I actually spoke to a woman today who told me that she stayed in all weekend because she was on her period and knew she would, in her own words, “be a fucking c**t to everybody.”

To make matters worse, womens’ neuroticism causes their subconscious mind to confabulate insanely weird and irrational negative thoughts. Confabulation (also called “hamstering”) is when a person’s subconscious brain hijacks their conscious brain and creates thoughts to justify whatever it is feeling. An example of confabulation is a crackhead convincing themselves it is ok to just smoke crack one more time. If you have ever tried to argue with a woman in the grip of neuroticism, you will notice that much of the justifications she makes for her negative emotions make no sense whatsoever and arguing with them is like playing a wack-a-mole with insane arguments.

As a man, it is almost impossible for you to understand or appreciate the depths of women’s neuroticism, so you should just assume it is infinite and reaches all the way down to hell. I have lots of experience with crazy women, but I still regularly find myself shocked at the weird, crazy, evil, devious things women do. You should NEVER underestimate a woman’s insecurity and neuroticism, which means you must be all the more indestructibly, irrationally positive no matter what the situation is. As we will learn, men have mechanisms to alleviate their neuroticism that women do not, and womens’ helplessness in the face of negative emotion means there is almost nothing crazy they will not do.

Here is an example: an attractive and successful woman I know recently went to the hospital for burning her hand with soup. The next day, she posted a video on social media of herself crying and saying “I am in so much pain … if I die, then I want everybody to remember me.” Obviously, she was being irrational if she really thought she might die of a burnt hand. But even if she knew she would not die and just posted that video for attention, that would also be a manifestation of her neuroticism because she need attention and acceptance so badly that she posted a video of herself saying something extremely fucking stupid on the internet. (In case you were worried, she survived and went to Cancun the week after the accident.)

Womens' neuroticism is important and recurring theme in this book because it is the primary driver of womens’ sexual attraction and motivates much of what they do. Most of womens’ flakiness, bitchiness, moodiness, clinginess, over-sensitivity, nagging, and crazy and bizarre behavior, are caused by their neuroticism. Most importantly, womens’ shit tests are simply neurotic projections – they want to see if the alpha male is also perturbed by the negative feelings that haunt her, or if he can just brush them off.

Once you realize most of women’s craziness is an irrational manifestation of their neuroticism, you will be able to brush off their shit tests and not take their weird and shitty behavior personally. People are wired to be friendly and cooperative by default - when people feel accepted, safe, and like they have a high, safe status in the tribe, they happily emotionally connect with other members of their tribe. People only act shitty and defensive when they feel like the tribe has rejected them and they are vulnerable and weak. Therefore, when a woman acts shitty or flaky, even if she is extremely hot or high status, she is crying for help that she is insecure and needs a powerful alpha male to make her feel better. Instead of taking womens’ shit tests personally or getting upset, therefore, you should just laugh it off and feel bad for her.

Because women live in a neurotic hell, they are like crack addicts for positive emotion. Womens’ baseline emotional state is boredom and anxiety, so they have an almost irresistible urge to impulsively go on dangerous, transgressive, crazy, wild, adventures with dominant, confident, fun men. This urge exists because it is only through men with fun emotional experiences that women can experience novelty, conquer enemies, enjoy pleasures they cannot otherwise access, and feel victorious, powerful, loved, accepted, and high-status. In many ways, an attractive man who is unflinchingly confident and positive is like an emotional drug dealer for women, and women are the fiends, which is why women often compare relationships to alpha males to religious experiences.

Most women are self-aware enough to know they have a powerful urge to follow attractive guys on random adventures, so they take great pains to be safe and make sure the wrong people do not find out what they are doing. This is why women are wildest on vacation and only around certain friends. This is also why women enjoy being approached by attractive men – they are dying to leave their boring bubble and experience something transgressive and fun. I have said to women “I am impressed you would decide to spontaneously go on an adventure with a random guy you just met” and almost every time the woman responded by saying “I knew what I was doing.”

The deepest, darkest secret about game, and something most men do not understand, is that women often reject men not because of a lack of attraction, but because of their neuroticism. In other words, women often do not reject you because they do not like you, but because they are afraid you will reject them. Women are extremely insecure (insecure just means the fear of being rejected by the tribe), so women assume they are rejected by default constantly interpret little things men do as rejection or signs of impending rejection.

As we will learn, it is counterintuitive, but showing women no emotion whatsoever is often the easiest way to get them to emotionally invest in you, because womens’ neuroticism will cause them to interpret any emotion you show towards them in a negative way. For example, if you tell a woman you “like” her, she will subconsciously assume you are a loser with no options who only likes her because you cannot do better, or she may assume that you are a lying, manipulative fuckboy who just wants to fuck her and break her heart, or she may assume you are her dream man and you will get married and have a beautiful life and then three years from now you will die in a car accident and she will be heartbroken so it would have been better if she never met you at all. That may sound insane to you, but that is because you do not understand the depth of womens’ neuroticism.

For this reason, you should not take rejection personally. Women often reject men for tons of reasons that have nothing to do with the man – they might have misinterpreted your actions in that moment in the wrong way, they may interpret some small thing you do as evidence of some huge problem, or they may just feel shitty for unrelated reasons and project those feelings on you. Unless a woman actually did something wrong to you (like broke a promise or actively tried to hurt you), you should just ignore every rejection and act like it did not happen so you can live to fight another day. After the neurotic storm passes, women often later think back at their behavior and realize they were being crazy, and then give the guy another shot. I have personally reconnected with many women who “rejected” me when I encountered in them in a different setting or emotional state. But if you freak out and get butthurt, like most men do when they get rejected, you will just make her feel like her neurotic thoughts were correct.

So how does one alleviate womens’ neuroticism?

One of the biggest mistakes men make is trying to “fix” womens’ neuroticism with rational arguments. Rational arguments do not work because womens’ neuroticism is a deep, subconscious product of their ancient lizard brain, so words have no effect on it. It would be great if you could just say to a woman “I promise I like you, your fears are stupid, everything will be ok, now let’s fuck.” But unfortunately, that is not how it works. Even if you can somehow convince a woman one of her negative thoughts is irrational, her subconscious brain will just confabulate a new one. In fact, rational arguments often make the woman’s neuroticism worse because negative emotions feed on thoughts, so the more words and ideas you put in her brain, the more fuel you give to justify her negative emotions.

The other big mistake men make is catering to women because of their neuroticism. Men try to make women feel better by listening to her problems and doing favors for her even when she does not deserve them, wrongly thinking that the woman will feel better and start to like them. Unfortunately, not only does being a woman’s servant not alleviate her neuroticism, it usually makes it worse, because it causes her to feel like you are a beta male.

The only thing that can defeat an emotion is a stronger emotion, and the only thing that can defeat a woman’s neuroticism is the alpha male. You cannot fix a woman’s neuroticism by solving her problems: all you can do is generate a positive emotional experience for yourself and let her experience that emotional experience vicariously through you so she forgets and escape her own neuroticism. A woman’s subconscious brain looks at a man who fixes her problems as a dog-catcher that can solve individual problems but is worthless because her subconscious brain will generate a new problem in like 5 seconds. But a woman’s subconscious brain looks at an alpha male as a strong leader that can fix ALL her problems, which is why women feel much better around the alpha male.

It seems counterintuitive, but you are actually more likely to alleviate her neuroticism if you put yourself first, say “no” to her, brush off her concerns if they are irrational, and make her feel a little anxiety because you are being challenging. In other words, to cure her neuroticism, you must make her feel like you are the alpha male, and to make her feel like you are the alpha male, you must ensure your own emotional experience is awesome and not let her ruin it. A woman feels courageous, powerful, and positive around an alpha male because the alpha male feels that way. But if the alpha is freaking out too, or if he is even taking her neuroticism seriously, she remains in her neurotic hell.

All that said, you are not a woman’s therapist and it is not your responsibility to “fix” her neuroticism if she has not done anything to deserve your time and attention. It should not matter to you why she is neurotic, or whether she is rejecting you or being shitty because she is neurotic or because she actually does not like you. All you should do is focus on your mission and only pay her attention if and when she works for it. If her neuroticism causes her to ignore you or treat you like shit, you should move on. Being a woman’s emotional tampon or accepting shitty behavior because “she is going through something” will not fix her neuroticism or make her like you more; it will just make you look like a beta male, which paradoxically makes her feel MORE neurotic around you. The alpha male does not put up with bullshit, and the best thing you can do to cure her neuroticism is to not put up with her bullshit.

And finally, some womens’ neuroticism is so extreme, often because of trauma or abuse, that they need years of serious therapy before they can have a healthy relationship or even act normal around a man. Sometimes women get “triggered” when a man tries to act like an alpha male or hold his boundaries because they associate the man’s “mean” behavior with their previous abuser. While it is hypothetically possible that the alpha male could “cure” one of these damaged women if he acted with rock solid frame over a long enough period of time, as a practical matter, it is usually not worth your time and energy.

Humans evolved to naturally want to help people in distress, and women will often pretend like they need help to get your attention. But you must resist trying to “help” women who have done nothing to deserve it from you. Many, many beautiful women end up dying alone and miserable because they are so damaged that they are unable to maintain a healthy relationship with a man they find attractive. Oftentimes these women become damaged due to the actions of shitty men, but it is not your responsibility to atone for the sins of other men. All you can do is act like an alpha male and hope she gets herself together enough to deserve your time and attention.

My point in writing this section is not to say that women are weaker than men or inferior to men. Obviously, neuroticism is not limited to women and most of what I have written here also applies to many men. In fact, the only person with zero neuroticism is the archetypal alpha male, an idealized character that does not exist. I also know lots of courageous, badass, tough women that are much more “alpha” than the weak, insecure guys I know. But generally speaking, men evolved to have more of an ability to control their neuroticism and inch closer to the ideal of the archetypal alpha, so if you can make progress on this road, you will be much more attractive to women.
