Poverty Not Causing Crime

Since this is at least the second time this week I've gotten this kind of cope from left wingers:

A: "Believing that "people wouldn't do crimes if their basic needs were met" while also believing that "greedy rich people are stealing from everyone" never registers to the people who say this *** as inherently contradictory."

B: When you say “believing that people wouldn’t do crimes if their basic needs were met” you make it sound like it’s an opinion. It’s not. It’s a statistical truth. Of course there will always be people born greedy and willing to do crime. Sometimes they’re born in poverty. Sometimes they’re born into wealth. It’s really not that hard to understand.

Me: Too bad the evidence tells us poverty doesn't cause crime. Left wingers just keep lying

B: what evidence?

Me: The Impacts of Guaranteed Basic Income on Crime Perpetration and Victimization

"This paper provides the first experimental evidence on the impact of providing a guaranteed basic income on criminal perpetration and victimization. We analyze a nationwide randomized controlled trial that provided 2,000 unemployed individuals in Finland with an unconditional monthly payment of 560 Euros for two years (2017-2018), while 173,222 comparable individuals remained under the existing social safety net. Using comprehensive administrative data on police reports and district court trials, we estimate precise zero effects on criminal perpetration and victimization. Point estimates are small and statistically insignificant across all crime categories. Our confidence intervals rule out reductions in perpetration of 5 percent or more for crime reports and 10 percent or more for criminal charges."

Does Wealth Inhibit Criminal Behavior? Evidence from Swedish Lottery Winners and Their Children

"There is a well-established negative gradient between economic status and crime, but its underlying causal mechanisms are not well understood. We use data on four Swedish lotteries matched to data on criminal convictions to gauge the causal effect of financial windfalls on player’s own crime and their children’s delinquency. We estimate a positive but statistically insignificant effect of lottery wealth on players’ own conviction risk. Our estimates allow us to rule out effects one fifth as large as the cross-sectional gradient between income and crime. We also estimate a less precise null effect of parental lottery wealth on child delinquency."

Childhood family income, adolescent violent criminality and substance misuse: quasi-experimental total population study

"There were no associations between childhood family income and subsequent violent criminality and substance misuse once we had adjusted for unobserved familial risk factors."

B: I’m going to give you a free piece of advice. When you’re trying to argue with someone and use Google, cross check your sources. I’m not gonna do it for you, because I want you to learn from this.

If you have a strong opinion about something, research the opposition of that opinion so you are informed about what you are arguing against. Don’t just ask Google to reinforce what you already believe.

If you do that, we can have a logical discussion. Don’t just throw out bullshit studies that can be easily dismissed. It’s a waste of everybody’s time.

Me: Yes, left wingers love to dismiss peer reviewed research that they disagree with. Cope

B: …really?

Me: Yes you so eloquently laid out an argument for why the multiple studies I presented refute your claim that I am unable to respond to your multiple points engaging with the argument

Lol

B: is it worth my time to look up the multiple studies and real life examples that prove you wrong? Or are you just going to shrug it off as fake.

Because you had Google at the ready to reinform your position. You don’t even care how incredulous those sources are. I don’t think there’s any facts I can throw at you to change your mind. Unfortunately the best I can do is bully you and pray it sinks in that you need to be better informed. You need to learn how to research before you shoot your mouth off about things you know nothing about.

Me: The irony is off the scales here

B: I can tell you know you’re in the wrong here. Do I really need to point out why? You can tap out now.
