Europe CNY 2012
Day 4 - 22nd January - Cambridge
I'm not sure why the "missing cat" sign mentions "complete confidence" for providing information. Are there cat hunters out there who might be witnessed?
Notice that the reward for information is underwritten by an insurance company, and the copyright notice
I started off the day with a supermarket run (mostly browsing).
Cheap cooked meat!
"Britannia. Finest Beef Dripping. A Great British Ingredient. Authentic Flavour for Roasting Frying & Baking"
No Ais Krim here, no
"Price Drop". Instead of an increase!
I think duck fat is better for potatoes than beef
Not as much cheese as what I'm told a Chicago-style pizza has.
La vache qui rit is not called "La vache qui rit", but just "Laughing Cow". They'd probably charge more under the French name anyway.
Prodigious milk aisle
Lunch. Tesco curly fries suck. They are not salty/spicy enough.
I then went into town.
Really cheap alcohol
On St Andrew's Street.
Baptist Church on St Andrew's Street
Coat of Arms above Carpark Entrance
A REALLY cheap lunch, and from "the oldest restaurant in Cambridge" (i.e. not a Chinese place)
King's College building, with the King
I then attended Evensong at King's College Chapel.
People going in
Organ
Particularly spectacular vaulting. The angels on top of the organ were nice also.
Stained glass at side
Choir screen, organ, congregation
Coats of Arms at side
I'd come a bit late, so I was relegated to the second class area (not within the choir screen). Sadly the sound in the overflow area at the back of the chapel (behind the choir screen) wasn't very good so I couldn't hear very well, with distance, the echoey acoustics and the organ combining to muffle the sound.
There was a stand with "Kawai" and one speaker. Presumably they use it when the place is full.
Before the service the staff didn't make noise about a woman using her SLR. However later one guy behind me with a DSLR was told off for taking pictures. There're advantages to point and shoots.
For Unto Us A Child Is Born. The running notes were quite bad, perhaps because of the acoustics.
15 minutes in more than half of us in the overflow area had left. Maybe because the sound was bad.
"Keep off the grass" - in 6 languages. Though it doesn't stop PRCs.
King's College
The benefits of being a Senior Member of the College - walking on the grass (and getting people to walk with you)
People leaving service
No picnics on the grass
There was someone even more boliao than I - taking a picture with the doorman of King's College.
"Student Happy Hour. From 5:20 when the bells for evensong at King's start, to 7:29 when you should be in Hall already"
Strange contraption
Outside King's College
"The Eagle"
Pub where DNA was discovered (I'm sure the missing link came over a beer)
Feel sexy when pregnant
Another of the ubiquitous Pret-a-manger outlets
Harry (Black) and Boris (Ginger), the 2 nice cats
Apparently it is easy to find "Southern Fried Chicken" in the UK. This is from a Chinese takeout called Cherry House
I made General Tso's Chicken for Reunion Dinner but it didn't turn out very well. The sauce was too thin, for one.
