Is nutrition research a pseudoscience? - "Everyone agrees "eating right" is a good idea – what we can't agree on is what the hell it means. (Whole wheat is now a healthy diet option or "probably killing you," depending on who you ask.) What does science have to say about good dietary habits? According to University of South Carolina researcher Edward Archer, not nearly enough... 'the vast majority of nutrition's failures were engendered by a complete lack of familiarity with the scientific method. This deficit is most apparent in the field's reliance on self-reports of diet. Such information, to which nutrition researchers assign numeric caloric values, is rife with bias, and without the ability to corroborate or falsify the reports, the data should be considered pseudoscientific—outside the realm of scientific research'... Archer's central thesis – that "the field's leaders choose to train their mentees to serve only their own professional needs—namely, to obtain grant funding and publish their research" – is a criticism that's been leveled at scientific research in general for ages, though apparently Archer finds nutritional researchers particularly guilty of this sin"
The Insourcing Boom - "It was important to innovate, and to protect innovations, 10 or 15 years ago. It was important to have designers, engineers, and assembly-line workers talk to each other then, too. That companies spent the past two decades ignoring those things just shows the power of price, even for people who should be able to take a broader view... “about 60 percent of the companies that offshored manufacturing didn’t really do the math. They looked only at the labor rate—they didn’t look at the hidden costs.” Moser believes that about a quarter of what’s made outside the U.S. could be more profitably made at home. “There was a herd mentality to the offshoring,” says John Shook, a manufacturing expert and the CEO of the Lean Enterprise Institute, in Cambridge, Massachusetts. “And there was some bullshit. But it was also the inability to see the total costs—the engineers in the U.S. and factory managers in China who can’t talk to each other; the management hours and money flying to Asia to find out why the quality they wanted wasn’t being delivered. The cost of all that is huge.” But many of those hidden costs come later. In the first blush of cheap manufacturing, it’s easy to overlook the slow loss of your own skills, the gradual homogenization of your products, the corrosion of quality and decline of innovation. And it’s easy to assume that globally distributed production will hum along more smoothly than it often does in practice"
Goodbye Outsourcing, Hello Insourcing: A Trend Rises - "Among the reasons IT leaders cite for pulling the plug on outsourcing deals—or subsets of their contracts—are poor service quality, failure to meet business objectives, and the desired for more control over the future direction of the IT function"
The Offshore Outsourcing of American Jobs: A Greater Threat Than Terrorism - "The loss of these jobs “is fool’s gold for companies.” Corporate America’s short-term mentality, stemming from bonuses tied to quarterly results, is causing US companies to lose not only their best employees-their human capital-but also the consumers who buy their products. Employees displaced by foreigners and left unemployed or in lower paid work have a reduced presence in the consumer market. They provide fewer retirement savings for new investment. Nothink economists assume that new, better jobs are on the way for displaced Americans, but no economists can identify these jobs. The authors point out that “the track record for the re-employment of displaced US workers is abysmal: “The Department of Labor reports that more than one in three workers who are displaced remains unemployed, and many of those who are lucky enough to find jobs take major pay cuts. Many former manufacturing workers who were displaced a decade ago because of manufacturing that went offshore took training courses and found jobs in the information technology sector. They are now facing the unenviable situation of having their second career disappear overseas.”"
Miley Cyrus: I'm one of the world's biggest feminists
Comment: "With so many fat people in UK a burqa for many of the population, male or female, would be a good idea on a beach."
Single Female Seeking Same-Race Male - NYTimes.com - "Here are some of the estimates (there weren’t enough data to do all the interracial permutations) of how much each extra income a man would need to be equally appealing to a woman as would a man of her own
race:
For equal success with an African-American woman, a Hispanic man needs to earn an extra $184,000; a white man needs to earn an additional $220,000.
For equal success with a white woman, an African-American needs to earn an additional $154,000; a Hispanic man needs $77,000; an Asian needs $247,000.
For equal success with a Hispanic woman, an African-American man needs to earn an additional $30,000; a white man needs to earn an additional $59,000.
For equal success with an Asian woman, an African-American needs no additional income; a white man needs $24,000 less than average; a Hispanic man needs $28,000 more than average."
I don't know how they square this with the claim that "Asian women didn’t discriminate much by race (except for showing a very slight preference for Asian men over black or Hispanic men)."
The Tyranny of the Queen Bee - WSJ.com - "women who achieved success in male-dominated environments were at times likely to oppose the rise of other women. This occurred, they argued, largely because the patriarchal culture of work encouraged the few women who rose to the top to become obsessed with maintaining their authority... Four decades later, the syndrome still thrives, given new life by the mass ascent of women to management positions... Far from nurturing the growth of younger female talent, they push aside possible competitors by chipping away at their self-confidence or undermining their professional standing. It is a trend thick with irony: The very women who have complained for decades about unequal treatment now perpetuate many of the same problems by turning on their own... female bullies directed their hostilities toward other women 80% of the time—up 9% since 2007. Male bullies, by contrast, were generally equal-opportunity tormentors. A 2011 survey of 1,000 working women by the American Management Association found that 95% of them believed they were undermined by another woman at some point in their careers. According to a 2008 University of Toronto study of nearly 1,800 U.S. employees, women working under female supervisors reported more symptoms of physical and psychological stress than did those working under male supervisors... some women are finding their professional lives dominated by high school "mean girls" all grown up: women with something to prove and a precarious sense of security. What makes these queen bees so effective and aggravating is that they are able to exploit female vulnerabilities that men may not see, using tactics that their male counterparts might never even notice. Like Jane's gossiping about Erin's personal life. Or when Kelly's boss would comment on her outfit: "Who are you trying to impress today?" Or not-so-gently condescend: "Did you take your smart pill today, sweetie?" Their assaults harm careers and leave no fingerprints... It cuts both ways, though: Women aren't always the best employees to other women either. Female subordinates can show less respect and deference to female bosses than to their male bosses."
Again, blaming men while keeping quiet about women is not a viable way to change things - especially if women are the bigger problem.
If lots of women have ascended to management, is it still a male-dominated environment?
Sorry, but being a mother is not the most important job in the world - "Being a mother is not the most important job in the world. There, I said it. Nor is it the toughest job, despite what the 92% of people polled in Parents Magazine reckon. For any woman who uses that line, consider this: if this is meant to exalt motherhood, then why is the line always used to sell toilet cleaner? And if being a mother is that important, why aren’t all the highly paid men with stellar careers not devoting their lives to raising children? After all, I never hear "being a father is the most important job in the world". The deification of mothers not only delegitimises the relationship fathers, neighbours, friends, grandparents, teachers and carers have with children, it also diminishes the immense worth and value of these relationships... Even if it were a job, there is no way being a professional mother could be the hardest when compared to working 16 hours a day in a clothing factory in Bangladesh, making bricks in an Indian kiln, or being a Chinese miner. Nor could it ever be considered the most important job in comparison with a surgeon who saves lives, anyone running a nation, or a judge deciding on people’s destiny... The more you outsource domestic labour and childcare to participate in the workforce, the less of a mother you are."
Chinese site under fire for sale of child-like sex doll - "Child-like sex dolls are illegal in some nations, depending on how they’re used or presented. The creepy phenomenon seems to have started in – you’ve guessed it – Japan"
Physical attractiveness and careers: Don’t hate me because I’m beautiful | The Economist - "For men, the results were as expected. Hunks were more likely to be called for an interview if they included a photo. Ugly men were better off not including one. However, for women this was reversed. Attractive females were less likely to be offered an interview if they included a mugshot... Human resources departments tend to be staffed mostly by women. Indeed, in the Israeli study, 93% of those tasked with selecting whom to invite for an interview were female. The researchers' unavoidable—and unpalatable—conclusion is that old-fashioned jealousy led the women to discriminate against pretty candidates... Companies might even consider the anonymous model used in the Belgian public sector, where CVs do not even include the candidate's name"
This goes beyond the Queen Bee syndrome, since virtually all of the HR personnel who screen through CVs are presumably not senior
Addendum: Even if you blame this on 'patriarchy', the truth is that it's still women (and not men) discriminating against women
The Myth of the ‘Queen Bee’: Work and Sexism - "Women who had been primed to think about gender bias answered like queen bees—that they had a masculine leadership style, that they were very different from other women and gender bias wasn’t a problem—only if they had started out by saying they identified weakly with women at work. Those who identified strongly with their gender at work had the opposite response – when they thought about gender bias, they said afterwards that they were motivated to mentor other women."
Given that this was conducted with employees in the police force and there was "priming" involved, I find the interview experiment above more interesting and applicable

International Violence Against Women Survey: The Singapore Report
"The International Violence Against Women Survey (IVAWS) is an instrument developed by the European Institute for Crime Prevention and Control, United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Institute, and Statistics Canada. It aims to provide a more reliable assessment of the prevalence of violence against women and enable international comparisons of data. Eleven countries have conducted the IVAWS to date: Australia, Costa Rica, Czech Republic, Denmark, Greece, Hong Kong, Italy, Mozambique, Philippines, Poland and Switzerland.
Singapore became the most recent country to have conducted the IVAWS in 2009...
Singapore had the lowest rate of lifetime violence victimisation (9.2%) as compared to other participating countries
Singapore also had the lowest rate of lifetime physical violence victimisation (6.8%) and the lowest rate of lifetime
sexual violence victimisation (4.2%) as compared to other participating countries"
AWARE's report on this:
"Preliminary results of a survey of 2,006 women released in January 2010 by the International Violence against Women Survey (IVAWS) positioned Singapore as having the lowest (9.2 percent) rate of lifetime violence compared to other participating countries including Australia, Hong Kong, Italy, the Philippines and Switzerland. Singapore also had the lowest rates for lifetime physical violence victimization (6.8 percent) and sexual violence victimisation (4.2 percent). However, critical statistics included the fact that 42.4 percent of the women polled felt their lives were in danger during domestic conflicts with partners. A shocking 71.7 percent of women abused by partners were also not likely to make a police report. These statistics show that societal misconceptions around domestic violence still require much attention and focus. AWARE is also concerned at the depth of under-reporting which means that many women remain as silent sufferers of violence. One in 10 calls or 11 percent of AWARE’s helpline calls in 2010 were related to abuse and violence"

Man jailed for sex with underage prostitute and two other offences - "A man who had sex with a 17-year-old prostitute and ran away without paying was on Monday sentenced to seven months' jail. Khoo Wenbo, 28, had booked the girl for sexual services in December 2010. While the prostitute was in the shower, Khoo did a check and discovered she was under 18 years old at that time. So he decided to have her perform oral sex on him, thinking that would not be against the law. While the minor was in the shower after sex, Khoo fled the hotel room without paying."
Picking the Best Charity for Typhoon Haiyan Relief - "What we don't encourage is sending volunteers. There's been too many untrained, unorganized volunteers coming to disaster areas and that just adds a huge burden to the local relief workers and don't send goods and products, unless they've made some arrangement or determine that these are goods that are actually needed"... Give to proven, time-tested health activities instead of disaster relief. This contrarian recommendation comes from a very reputable source: the Disease Control Priorities Project (DCPP), which is jointly organized by several groups including the World Bank, World Health Organization and Gates Foundation. This advice takes courage, resisting the popular pressure to donate to disaster relief, and is based on a sound foundation of cost-benefit analysis: "The highly emotional and sensationalized climate of disaster response has long prevented the adoption of a cost effectiveness approach in decision making . . . perceptions and visibility tend to prevail over facts and analysis, resulting in a lack of evidence-based studies on costs and benefits. . . . Emergency health interventions are more costly and less effective than time-tested health activities. Improvisation and rush inevitably come with a high price." Two thumbs up for a remarkably frank assessment to help donors do as much good as possible in the long term... "Allow your funds to be used where most needed -- even if that means they're not used during this disaster. Disasters attract a great deal of media attention and money, yet in many cases the biggest challenge is logistics. The result can be that money isn't the limiting factor in the immediate relief effort. We found evidence of this both for the 2010 Haiti earthquake and the 2011 Japan tsunami""
CDC - Chemical Irritants (Chloramines) & Indoor Pool Air Quality - "Pool operators may receive complaints from swimmers and pool staff about stinging eyes, nasal irritation, or difficulty breathing after being in the water or breathing the air at swimming pools, particularly indoor pools. New research indicates that these symptoms may be an indication of poor water and indoor air quality at the pool caused by a build-up of irritants, known as chloramines, in the water and air. Irritants in the air at swimming pools are usually the combined chlorine by-products of disinfection. These by-products are the result of chlorine binding with sweat, urine, and other waste from swimmers... Getting swimmers to shower before getting in the pool and promoting regular bathroom use to reduce the amount of urine in the pool will decrease the formation of irritants"

Atheist marriages may last longer than Christian ones - "Conservative Christians think of themselves as the last line of defense for a time-honored and holy tradition, marriage. In the conservative Christian view, marriage is a sacred union ordained by God. It binds one man and woman together so that the “two become one flesh” until they are parted by death. This view of marriage is unbiblical, to be sure. See Captive Virgins, Polygamy, Sex Slaves: What Marriage Would Look Like If We Actually Followed The Bible. But hey, who actually reads the Bible? Surely, what God meant to say is that marriage should take the form that is most familiar and traditional to us: One male plus one female who is given to the male by her father–that part is biblical–for life. In this worldview, Christian marriage is under assault by an anti-trinity of powerful and dark forces: feminism, homosexuality and godlessness. Faith, on the other hand, saves both souls and marriages. When I was young, a slogan made its way around my church: The family that prays together stays together. Tom Ellis, former chairman of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Council on the Family boldly claimed that “born-again Christian couples who marry…in the church after having received premarital counseling…and attend church regularly and pray daily together… experience only 1 divorce out of nearly 39,000 marriages.” But then came data. According to research by the Barna Research Group over a decade ago, American divorce rates were highest among Baptists and nondenominational “Bible-believing” Christians and lower among more theologically liberal Christians like Methodists, with atheists at the bottom of the divorce pack... Churches do honor and support marriage. They also may inadvertently promote divorce, especially—ironically—those churches which most bill themselves as shining lights in a dark world. To prevent that greatest-of-all-evils, abortion, such communities teach even high school students to embrace surprise pregnancies as gifts from God. They encourage members to marry young so they won’t be tempted to fornicate. But women who give birth or marry young tend to end up less educated and less financially secure, both of which are correlated with higher divorce rates... Secular couples tend to see both marriage and divorce as personal choices. Overall, a lower percent get married, which means that those who do may be particularly committed or well-suited to partnership... A growing number say that marriage is obsolete. In one of those peculiar twists of fate, conservative Christian obsessions with abortion and sexual purity may be accelerating this trend. Naomi Cahn and June Carbone, authors of Red State, Blue State, propose that Bible-belt opposition to abortion has increased the non-marital birthrate and acceptance of single parent families:"

A Cold War Fought by Women - NYTimes.com - "this “mean girl” form of indirect aggression is used more by adolescents and young women than by older women, who have less incentive to handicap rivals once they marry. Other studies have shown that the more attractive an adolescent girl or woman is, the more likely she is to become a target for indirect aggression from her female peers. “Women are indeed very capable of aggressing against others, especially women they perceive as rivals,” said Dr. Vaillancourt, now a psychologist at the University of Ottawa. “The research also shows that suppression of female sexuality is by women, not necessarily by men.” Stigmatizing female promiscuity — a.k.a. slut-shaming — has often been blamed on men, who have a Darwinian incentive to discourage their spouses from straying. But they also have a Darwinian incentive to encourage other women to be promiscuous. Dr. Vaillancourt said the experiment and other research suggest the stigma is enforced mainly by women. “Sex is coveted by men,” she said. “Accordingly, women limit access as a way of maintaining advantage in the negotiation of this resource. Women who make sex too readily available compromise the power-holding position of the group, which is why many women are particularly intolerant of women who are, or seem to be, promiscuous”... Studies have shown that women’s ideal body shape is to be thinner than average — and thinner than what men consider the ideal shape to be. This pressure is frequently blamed on the ultrathin female role models featured in magazines and on television, but Christopher J. Ferguson and other researchers say that it’s mainly the result of competition with their peers, not media images. “To a large degree the media reflects trends that are going on in society, not creates them,” said Dr. Ferguson, a psychologist at Stetson University. He found that women’s dissatisfaction with their bodies did not correlate with what they watched on television at home. Nor were they influenced by TV programs... “Sexual competition among females seems to increase due to circumstances that tend to be particularly common in affluent societies,” Dr. Ferguson said. In traditional villages, people married at an early age to someone nearby, but young men and women in modern societies are free to postpone marriage as they search long and far for better options. The result is more competition because there are so many more rivals"

Cops Taser A Little Girl - "Three police officers in Pierre, S.D., responded to a report last week of a suicidal 8-year-old who had stabbed herself in the leg and was threatening to plunge a 4 ½ inch knife into her chest. An officer fired a Taser gun at the girl to subdue her, the Argus Leader reports. The Pierre police chief is reviewing the incident but said the Taser was the least forceful way for the officer, whose name was not released, to subdue the child for her own protection. “He quite possibly saved the juvenile’s life that night”"
Scott Adams Blog: What's the Difference Between a Sexist and a Regular Asshole? 11/21/2013 - "Help me understand the difference between a sexist and a run-of-the-mill asshole that happens to be male... If a man overlooks a female job candidate because of gender alone, isn't that more a case of stupidity than sexism? Clearly women are excelling at ever profession on earth, so what kind of hiring manager would fail to notice a worldwide trend so immensely obvious? Answer: a dumb one... If I am your boss's boss, and you tell me your direct boss is being a sexist, my skepticism alarm goes off because the label so often gets misused. But if you tell me your boss is being an asshole, complete with examples, or you say he's incompetent at his job because he ignores qualified job candidates, I start considering his replacement. Your choice of labels can make a big difference."

6 Buildings That Look Like Vaginas - "There are so many phallic buildings that, in 2003, Cabinet Magazine launched a Most Phallic Building Contest. After writer Jonathan Ames claimed that Brooklyn’s Williamsburg Bank Building was the world’s most phallic, defensive readers attacked him, claiming that their city’s dick-like building was the most dick-like in the land.

Scott's wish, which was granted by charity Make-A-Wish, received international coverage and even caught the attention of the White House"

Should we be outraged that Australia spied on Indonesia? No - "Do I feel more informed, knowing this was being done in my name? I’m not even surprised. Am I outraged that it was done? No. Here are some examples of how the media have treated allegations of Indonesian spying"

The score was settled by voting, and Michigan’s Ypsilanti Water Tower, AKA the Brick Dick, emerged as the proud winner.)

"All that talk - 'you get what you give' or it's 'all about your attitude' or anything along the lines of achieving a sense of fulfilment depending on your perspective - Bullshit.
Let me tell you how I know that - I am one of those guys. I went into the army raring to go. I was excited I got drafted into the Commandos. At the interview when they asked me if I wanted to be a Commando I said 'maybe' - I later found out the question was a test of how vigorously you could say no.
I enjoyed the pain. What didn't kill me made me stronger. I motivated myself to achieve everything that I could. I ran the fastest I've ever ran. I walked the furthest I've ever walked. I carried the heaviest load I've ever carried. I pushed my limits. I tore ligaments and muscles in ways that will never fully recover but would not handicap me.
I considered signing on to the army full time. I fired all kinds of cool weapons. Blew up explosives for fun. Jumped out of planes and helicopters. Repelled down cliffs. Learned unarmed combat. Marched as the guard of honour at national day parade. Relished the jungle warfare of various countries.
I busked in the honour and glory singalong pride the Commandos sold. I made the great friends you make from common suffering. I despised the people who went in and figured ways to slack off.
I'd say I made the most of it. I'd say I gave it my all. I'd say I had a pretty damned positive attitude.
It was the most miserable time of my life. Ever. Good times notwithstanding. I'd take it all back if I could. The subjugation, the mental torment, the sub-human treatment, the separation from loved ones, the taunting for wanting human wants, the shame for being too weak, the ridiculous incompetence and sadism of people with absolute power over you, the injustice you suffer, the complete lack of dignity or semblance of control of your life.
It sucked.
Well, surviving it helps you learn valuable life lessons?
Well, so does cancer."

Testosterone and the Gender Wage Gap - "Testosterone, which induces sexual differentiation of the male fetus, is believed to transfer from males to their littermates in placental mammals. Among humans, individuals with a male twin have been found to exhibit greater masculinization of sexually dimorphic attributes relative to those with a female twin. We therefore regard twinning as a plausible natural experiment to test the link between prenatal exposure to testosterone and labor market earnings. For men, the results suggest positive returns to testosterone exposure. For women, however, the results indicate that prenatal testosterone does not generate higher earnings and may even be associated with modest declines"

The perils of ignoring opportunity cost
"Compound interest is the most powerful force in the universe." - Albert Einstein (attr.)
***
2 3 weeks ago, My Paper The Business Times had a story about OCBC Bank's Mortgage Protector schemes which are unique among mortgage insurance plans in refunding buyers all the premiums they have paid at the end of the 20 year period (if they have made no claims).
AsMy Paper The Business Times notes, "These policies play right into the Singaporean psyche, which just hates giving or paying for something, for nothing in return".
Fortunately for OCBC, they also play right into economic illiteracy where people discount opportunity cost (in this case, forgetting that money should grow over time).
WhileMy Paper The Business Times observes that these plans cost more than three times as much as non-refund plans, this is not the main problem with this "form of 'forced' savings".
Original Table:
Assumptions: 40 years old, male, non-smoker, sum assured $1 million, 20-year policy term, 5% interest rate
Using the same assumption of a 5% interest rate, let us calculate the real value of the payments one makes to OCBC. Besides the $5,847 annual payment, we must each year multiply the value of all the premiums paid in previous years by the prevailing interest rate of 5%.
So we can see that at a 5% interest rate, you're actually paying $12,070 more than with a regular plan - even after a refund (which is by no means guaranteed, since you might need to file a claim for the policy).
From there it is a trivial exercise to calculate the interest rate at which one's 'losses' (in opportunity cost) are 0 - 3.653% (of course, a different interest rate would change the plan's numbers too, but for simplicity let's hold them constant and treat this as a simple exercise in opportunity cost).
Again, all this assumes that there is no claim - if you make a claim you don't even get anything back. So this is assuredly a bad plan, unless you think you are a terrible investor who will definitely never make a claim.

Original Table:
| Regular-premium mortgage insurance plan with no-refund feature | Mortgage Protector Advantage | |
| Premium amount per year | $1,760 | $5,847 |
| Total premiums paid over 15 years | $26,400 | $87,700 |
| Amount received at the end of policy term if no claim is made throughout the term | $0 (there is no refund) | $87,700 |
Using the same assumption of a 5% interest rate, let us calculate the real value of the payments one makes to OCBC. Besides the $5,847 annual payment, we must each year multiply the value of all the premiums paid in previous years by the prevailing interest rate of 5%.

How Many Scientists Fabricate and Falsify Research? A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Survey Data - "A pooled weighted average of 1.97% (N = 7, 95%CI: 0.86–4.45) of scientists admitted to have fabricated, falsified or modified data or results at least once –a serious form of misconduct by any standard– and up to 33.7% admitted other questionable research practices. In surveys asking about the behaviour of colleagues, admission rates were 14.12% (N = 12, 95% CI: 9.91–19.72) for falsification, and up to 72% for other questionable research practices... Considering that these surveys ask sensitive questions and have other limitations, it appears likely that this is a conservative estimate of the true prevalence of scientific misconduct."
Scientific dishonesty¿a nationwide survey of doctoral students in Norway - "About 11% of the respondents had experienced unethical pressure concerning the order of authors during the last 12 months. 10% did not find it inappropriate to report experimental data without having conducted the experiment and 38% did not find it inappropriate to try a variety of different methods of analysis to find a statistically significant result. 13% agreed that it is acceptable to selectively omit contradictory results to expedite publication and 10% found it acceptable to falsify or fabricate data to expedite publication, if they were confident of their findings... Although there is less scientific dishonesty reported in Norway than in other countries, dishonesty is not unknown to doctoral students. Some forms of scientific misconduct are considered to be acceptable by a significant minority."
Vibration Nation? Gender Differences in Sexual Behavior and Orgasmic Function - "Quackenbush, Strassberg, and Turner (1995) conducted a study of 164 college students to determine if manipulating the themes of explicit videos would have any effect on arousal for men and women. The researchers found that the romantically themed videos, those depicting love and affection, were significantly more arousing for both men and women than videos without romantic themes"
An economist's critique of The Omnivore's Dilemma. - "Pollan argues that the costs and benefits of a meal should be as transparent as possible so that eaters are aware of the impact of their food decisions on the environment; he claims that his pig hunt roughly approximates this standard... Pollan neglects another cost of his "perfect" meal: Our author's time is gone forever. There are plenty of "cheap" ways to procure food if we do not measure our time and trouble as relevant costs. The problems with Pollan's "self-financed" meal reflect the major shortcoming of the book: He focuses on what is before his eyes but neglects the macro perspective of the economist... Pollan also argues against free trade in agriculture, on the grounds that the economics will bankrupt family farms and destabilize the market; Pollan fears centralization and the industrial mode of production. He does not note, however, that New Zealand has moved to free agricultural markets—virtually no subsidies or tariffs—and its farms, including family farms, have flourished. Nor should we forget that farm protectionism, as practiced in the EU and elsewhere, costs billions and damages economic development in poorer countries that might otherwise ship foodstuffs to the wealthier West."
Is a man's bladder larger or smaller than that of a woman? - "A GOOD source of physiological data of this sort is the Report of the Task Group on Reference Man, Publication 23 of the International Commission on Radiological Protection (1975). This gives the physiological capacity of the adult male and female as 500 ml, and notes that there is probably no inherent difference between male and female... THE QUESTION may be prompted by women's apparent need to go to the WC more frequently than men do. Some have suggested this is due to the woman's bladder pushing against interior parts that cause discomfort, whereas the male bladder bumps up against less objecting parts, so that the discomfort is far less."
SAF stopping the singing of ‘misogynist’ lyrics from marching song: AWARE - "“We were troubled that NSmen were bonding over misogynist lyrics about committing sexual violence against women"... One Facebook user said, “…it’s a non-issue that’s just being dramatised by a group of women who have excellent legal protection, a strong and supportive government in a very good living environment where they have options and opportunities not that [sic] many other Asian women get.” Another user justified the lyrics, saying, “The lyrics refer to the way many Singaporean women ditch their boyfriends without a second’s thought when they enter NS. Nearly three-quarters of the attached men in my BMT [Basic Military Training] platoon were dumped during the confinement weeks of BMT, and the lyrics were made up to express their rage and frustration.”"
You know women have it good when feminists spend their time this way.
Next target: violent computer games with violent gameplay where people bond over about committing murder against other people (usually men). But then since men are the "victims", no one cares (notice how according to AWARE, it is okay to kill a man but not rape a woman)
Humans do NOT come from Earth - and sunburn, bad backs and pain during labour prove it, expert claims - "Dr Ellis said many people feel that they don’t belong and feel at home on Earth. ‘This suggests (to me at least) that mankind may have evolved on a different planet, and we may have been brought here as a highly developed species.’"

Gender Wage Gap May Be Much Smaller Than Most Think - "Some researchers believe that it is not enough to compare wages of similar men and women. They argue that total compensation (wages together with benefits) must be compared. Women of child-bearing age may prefer jobs with a lower wage but with employer-paid parental leave, sick leave and child care to jobs with a higher wage but without such benefits. A study that used National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1979 (NLSY79) found that female workers were indeed more likely to receive family-friendly fringe benefits. Some economists believe that female workers "pay" for the benefits they prefer by accepting a lower wage. If that is the case, excluding fringe benefits would exaggerate the actual gender wage disparity."
Bigotry Against Men In Childcare - "There’s been a bit of a fuss recently about seating of children on airplanes in New Zealand. A man who was seated next to a child travelling alone was asked to change his seat, because the airline has a policy against men sitting next to unaccompanied minors... 'When men choose child care, their motives for making such a choice are questioned. In child care settings, this questioning occurs most often on those occasions when men get judged negatively for engaging in the same behaviors as their caregiving counterparts whoa re women – when they are suspect just for doing their jobs.'"
Lily Allen does not represent all feminism – and nor should she - "one single music video containing some fairly cursory observations on sexism is able to stir up such a reaction in the feminist movement. One explanation lies in a comment made by the blogger Glosswitch recently (and I recommend you read her piece in full): "I'd say one objective of feminism should be to help women's decisions become less loaded. It's oppressive to have to represent a whole sex in everything you do." Unfortunately for Allen and everybody else, her music video seems unable to stand in and of itself, representing only her opinions, but is instead being seen as some kind of expression of all feminism – and by extension all women. This is part and parcel of being in an oppressed group: women are routinely dehumanised and homogenised, so that every act we undertake in public tends to reflect on all women, instead of our own individual character. It's a problem men just don't have"
The flip side of the personal being political is that you must scrutinise all your actions; meanwhile men have a different problem: every act they undertake in public can be interpreted as oppressive
False Consciousness Theory in Feminism and Anti-Speciesism | Feminist Law Professors - "The argument, in both feminism and anti-speciesism, is that when the chooser chooses a pre-chosen choice, that choice is less authentic, valid, worthy of respect than a choice that is not pre-chosen. But if we embrace the implications of the Marxist critique, then there shouldn’t be any intellectual room for an unchosen choice. In other words, the critique itself arises out of culturally constrained circumstances that shape the critique. The self-righteous tone of the false consciousness claim is especially problematic for feminists, for whom choice is a dominant value. Choice can double back. If I chose my choice, even if my choice was pre-chosen, the choosing is what matters, not the choice. Yikes."
Feminist Media Criticism Problems - "This scantilly clad female character is clearly just meant to be eye candy for men... but am I Slut Shaming in thinking she should be more covered up?"
Why is there so much slut shaming in novels written by women? - "Why are women authors so anxious to devalue women based on what they wear and how sexually active they are? Why do we readers allow this thinking to perpetuate? If women in books written by women, celebrating womanhood, are constantly judging a woman’s worth based on their rape inducing clothing, their drunkness at a party, their willingness to have more than one partner and actually enjoy it, how can we ever be upset about the attitudes held by men quoted above. Too much alcohol and of course you are going to get some guy raping some girl. Too short of a skirt and of course you are going to get some guy raping some girl. Too promiscuous and of course you don’t deserve to say you were raped."
As a good economist I believe in revealed preferences
False Consciousness & Kafka-Trapping - "we encounter the peculiar feminist debating tactic called Kafka-Trapping. I did not invent the term; the credit must go to Eric S. Raymond, whose original article on the subject is linked below. Nor did Eric intend the term to be used only for feminists – any member of a victim ideology can effectively Kafka-Trap their opponents. The name, Kafka-Trapping, is a reference to Franz Kafka’s work The Trial, in which the protagonist is told that he is very, very guilty, although his crime is never specified; and, as he soon discovers, the only ‘way out’ is to admit his guilt (though he knows not what of), thus acquiescing in his own destruction. In Eric’s own words, a Kafka-Trap is an unfalsifiable claim, about thoughtcrime, intended to induce guilt so the subject becomes manipulable."

Possibly The Worst Economic Analogy I've Seen
From Fabrications About The PAP:

"What if the government decides to set a minimum price for a plate of Char Kway Teow? If the price is set at $2.50, it serves no purpose since the cheapest Char Kway Teow is already set by the free market mechanism at that price. What if it is set at $5? Now you can only eat a plate of Char Kway Teow at $5 by 'legislation'! Many hawkers selling Char Kway Teow will have to close shop unless it is worth the $5 consumers willing to pay. No body will want to eat a plate of $5 Char Kway Teow if it's not worth that amount. Those consumers will just switch to other food instead of Char Kway Teow.
On the surface, it appears that setting the minimum price of Char Kway Teow is helping the poor Char Kway Teow hawkers. Do you think it is so?"
In the labour market, employers (purchasers of labour) are fewer than employees (sellers of labour). In the extreme case, we have a monopsony (one purchaser of labour). Power rests with the side with fewer parties, so it's the employers who have power and any legislation would be to protect the employees. One example of which is a minimum wage.
In the char kway teow market, hawkers (sellers of goods) are fewer than customers (buyers of goods). In the extreme case, we have a monopoly (one seller of goods). Power rests with the side with fewer parties, so it's the hakwers who have power and any legislation would be to protect the consumers. One example of which is a maximum price.
Furthermore this misrepresents the dynamics of the labour market and the char kway teow market. Char kway teow is a good that is bought and consumed within an hour, and the consumer is free to go to another char kway teow hawker after that (or even to change to another hawker dish or a non-hawker dining option). There are no costs to changing hawker. On the other hand, labour market contracts are persistent and there are high costs to changing employer.

SF Asian Women Dating Arbitrage: Reality or Myth? Assessing the economics of dating for Asian men in the greater San Francisco Bay Area
When demand is inelastic, this is what you get. Solution: elastic demand
In Hookups, Inequality Still Reigns - NYTimes.com - "Women are less likely to have orgasms during uncommitted sexual encounters than in serious relationships.
Perhaps this mediates the effect where if women are assured that the sex will be great they are more likely to agree to casual sex
Gender Differences Accepting Casual Sex Proposals (NoH) | Feminist Critics - "anticipated pleasure from casual sex predicted people saying “yes,” and explained away some of the gap between men and women in accepting the offer. I think the results are fascinating, but I don’t think they contradict the evolutionary SST as much as she says... Gay men (2.55) responded much better to male proposers than heterosexual women (1.37). Heterosexual men (3.74) responded much better to female proposers than lesbian women did (2.27)... the gender of the receiver of the proposal is still quite an important factor, and that the difference she found in some of her studies is quite consistent with evolutionary psychology... Before you go tell all your friends that women turn down sexual proposals because they expect men hitting on them to be bad in bed, keep a few things in mind. Gender still had a bigger weight in predicting acceptance of sexual proposals: perceived sexual capabilities of the proposal was only part of why offers were accepted or refused. Even taking into account the fact that women perceived male proposers to be worse in bed (than men perceived female proposers), women still rejected the offers more... Yes, women would accept sexual proposals just as much as men, if only they got hit on by Johnny Depp! Wait, what? Poor Johnny Depp can only be in one place at once... There is no contradiction between Conley’s findings about pleasure, and the SST’s hypothesis that women are more selective in short term mating. In fact, Conley’s discovery that women on average perceive men to be worse lovers than men perceive women (even among friends) is consistent with women being more selective... some evolutionary theorists see the elusiveness of female orgasm as part and parcel of female selectiveness... the analysis could lead people to think that women would engage in casual sex just as much as men… if only men weren’t so lousy! But at least some of the reason that men are perceived to be lacking is because women and men have different expectations... Conley merely asked people whether they received at least one proposal. If a woman received 3 proposals and accepted 1, while a man had received 1 proposal and accepted 1, Conley’s study would measure them the same, even though the woman is obviously more selective. The 40% vs. 73% gap does not mean that women accept 40% of casual sex offers, while men accept 73%. It means that 40% of women and 73% of men who have received at least one casual sex offer also accepted it"
Addendum: This refers to Conley (2011), Perceived proposer personality characteristics and gender differences in acceptance of casual sex offers (used to claim that women are as interested in casual sex as men - under certain conditions), and is not hosted on whyevolutionistrue / why evolution is true
In Hookups, Inequality Still Reigns - NYTimes.com - "Women are less likely to have orgasms during uncommitted sexual encounters than in serious relationships. At the same time, researchers say that young women are becoming equal partners in the hookup culture, often just as willing as young men to venture into sexual relationships without emotional ties... women were twice as likely to reach orgasm from intercourse or oral sex in serious relationships as in hookups... a study of 24,000 students at 21 colleges over five years found that about 40 percent of women had an orgasm during their last hookup involving intercourse, while 80 percent of men did... By contrast, roughly three quarters of women in the survey said they had an orgasm the last time they had sex in a committed relationship. “We attribute that to practice with a partner, which yields better success at orgasm, and we also think the guys care more in a relationship,” Dr. England said... Debra Herbenick, a research scientist at Indiana University, said that for women, casual sex is exciting precisely because it is spontaneous. She compared a hookup with having dinner at a friend’s house. “You wouldn’t be like, ‘This is what I want and this is how I want you to make it, and I want you to use only this amount of basil,’” she said. Some women, confronted with these roadblocks, are redefining casual sex and the physical pleasure that they expect from it. Sex without strings has carnal and emotional benefits that don’t depend on reaching orgasm, they say... Casey Romaine, a 22-year-old Bard College graduate living in Nashville, Tenn., said that more than sex, hookups are often much more about two people giving each other the sense of intimacy, however brief, they need to get through the week... mediocre sex was a small price to pay “for the freedom to be able to enjoy it all.” The physical aspect of a tryst with a relative stranger was gratifying, she said, even if her chances of reaching orgasm were limited. When her partner’s performance was lackluster, she still took pride in her own sexual prowess."

Choosing Seafood for Sushi or Sashimi -- Fish That Can be Eaten Raw - "I would recommend to you that all seafood you decide to eat raw be previously frozen. It is just safer that way. Yes, fresh is better in most cases, but even professional sushi chefs freeze their salmon first -- salmon is unusually susceptible to parasites. The critters you need to worry about are cod worms, seal worms and tape worms. Cod worms are of course found in cod, haddock, pollock and hake. They are easily visible to the naked eye and are easily removed -- if you catch them. Good New England fish houses "candle" their fish by putting the fillets on a light box to detect the worms. Now you know why cod is never seen at a sushi bar."

Women Have Not Adapted To Casual Sex, Research Shows - "Overall women’s feelings were more negative than men’s. Eighty per cent of men had overall positive feelings about the experience compared to 54 per cent of women. Men were more likely than women to secretly want their friends to hear about it and to feel successful because the partner was desirable to others. Men also reported greater sexual satisfaction and contentment following the event, as well as a greater sense of well-being and confidence about themselves. The predominant negative feeling reported by women was regret at having been “used”... although women do not rate casual sex positively, the reason they still take part in it may be due to the menstrual cycle changes influencing their sexual motivation. Indeed, during the ovulatory phase (between days 10 to 18 of their cycle), women report increased sexual desire and arousal, with a preference for short-term partners."

Cyclists call for 'strict liability' law to hold drivers to account - "opponents of the idea said cyclists and motorists should be equally responsible for road safety. Alan Douglas, a motoring journalist and member of the Institute of Advanced Motorists, told BBC Scotland's Call Kaye programme: "I think this is an absolutely astonishing suggestion. Everyone using the roads is subject to the same law. "We all have equal responsibility, and surely the person who should be held responsible for an accident is the person who causes it. "This assumption that it is always the motorist at fault is absolutely breath-taking. It smacks of the sort of arrogance that we hear from some cyclists." A strict liability law would see the introduction of a hierarchy based on the vulnerability of road users. It would also mean that cyclists would be held automatically responsible for accidents involving pedestrians."

CISCO cop flashed warrant card at prostitute to find out her age - "An off-duty volunteer police sergeant who wanted to find out the age of a prostitute whose services he hoped to engage flashed his police warrant card at the woman to compel her to do so... the 42-year-old pleaded guilty to misconduct and was jailed for a day and fined $1,000... The court heard that Chua wanted to be “absolutely certain” that Ms Cai was above 18 years old before having sex with her."
This is actually much less than the penalty for inadvertent sex if she had been underaged
Australia considers fingerprinting women in burkas - "Last year Miss Matthews was sentenced to six months' jail for falsely claiming that a highway patrol officer had tried to remove her burka when he stopped her for a random breath test. But during her appeal it emerged that, because the complainant was wearing a burka when she appeared at a Sydney police station to report the incident, officers could only see her eyes, and ultimately could not be sure that Miss Matthews was the woman who made the false claim. Miss Matthews's barrister, Phillip Boulten SC, told the court: "All we know is that a woman in a black burka came with a man in a brown suit with an envelope, and that's it"... a Muslim woman said she would feel uncomfortable giving evidence in a A$1 million (£576,000) fraud trial unless she were able to wear the full veil. The woman had lived in Australia for seven years and had worn the burka since the age of 17, but the court denied her request and ordered her to testify without the veil... The full veil is banned in France and Belgium, but enforcing the bans has become difficult. Last week the first women to be summoned before a European court for illegally wearing the garments were refused entry, because they would not remove their face coverings"
A Same-Sex Domestic Violence Epidemic Is Silent - "Because domestic violence is still thought of as a heterosexual problem, there can be major hurdles when trying to find funding and conduct research, as well as when providing services to people who don't fit in the stereotype of a domestic violence survivor. "The idea that a woman can be the one who's abusive throws a wrench in the traditional view," Valentine said. "The idea that only men can be batterers makes it a lot harder for men to get access to shelter"... there are also internal factors that keep a cover of darkness over the issue of domestic violence in the gay community. "There can be a fear of making the community look bad"... "We need to change the way we look at domestic violence," Rogers said. "I don't see it in any way as a gender issue. I see it as a power and a control issue."

Judge dismisses rapist's appeal against conviction - "The High Court on Wednesday dismissed the appeal of a rapist who argued that he could not have had sex with his 13-year-old victim because he suffers from erectile dysfunction. Justice Lee Seiu Kin said that even if the 27-year-old did have the condition at the time of the 2006 offence, it would still have been possible for him to have sex... even if the man had erectile dysfunction in 2006, he was still able to have sex with the help of his hands."

Why setting a poverty line may not be helpful: Minister Chan Chun Sing - "he said the Government's approach is to use broad definitions for the groups it seeks to help, set clear criteria to identify and assess those in need, and come up with tailored schemes. "If we use a single poverty line to assess the family, we also risk a 'cliff effect', where those below the poverty line receive all forms of assistance, while other genuinely needy citizens outside the poverty line are excluded," he said."

Most men wish women would help pay date tab: study - "Two out of three men think women should help pay for a date, although most feel guilty about accepting their money... Of the 64 percent wanting to split the bill, 44 percent said they'd even ditch a love interest who never doled out any dollars... Fifty-seven percent of women claimed they had offered to pay for a date -- although 39 percent confessed they hoped the man would reject their offer to chip in. In any event, over time, the vast majority of participants, both male and female, said they shared dating expenses in the first six months of seeing someone exclusively."

Should men have a say in women's issues [or an opinion]?
Women: Should men have a say in women's issues [or an opinion]? - Quora
"Yes.
An opinion's validity does not change regardless of who vocalises it.
The claim that men should not have a say or opinion about women's issues arises from a conception of group rights, of taking women as a group (and implicitly one with only one opinion). Indeed, this is deeply insulting and dehumanising to women.
It is also an intensely cynical perspective which denies our shared humanity - our capacity to care about and identify with other people.
Women's issues are often also men's issues - while a fetus might reside in its mother's body, there is no such thing as a Virgin Birth (i.e. a man is also involved), and if/when a baby is delivered the father is legally responsible for the child's upkeep. Bodily sovereignty does not trump the rights of other people - as an analogy, if I am infected with Ebola (or some other contagious and deadly disease), my bodily sovereignty and freedom of movement are justifiably forfeited if I refuse treatment and/or quarantine.
Those who claim that men should not have a say about women's issues are just trying to shut down debate and opposing voices - witness how they tellingly excoriate women who disagree with them (who presumably have views equally as valid as theirs, given that they are of the 'right' sex).
Notice too that men are never lambasted for talking about women's issues when they say the 'right' things (e.g. being pro-abortion rights).
This whole issue is something of a red herring in any case given that, for example, there is no gender gap in views on abortion - there is no reason to expect a man to have a significantly different opinion from a woman on the topic (Pew Study Finds 'No Gender Gap' on Abortion Debate Positions)."
"Susan B. Anthony never married.
Once when the abolitionist, Samuel May, told her: "You are not married. You have no business to be discussing marriage." She retorted: "You, Mr. May, are not a slave. Should you quit lecturing on slavery?""

Le mieux est l'ennemi du bien
LA BÉGUEULE
CONTE MORAL. (1772)
Voltaire
Dans ses écrits un sage Italien
Dit que le mieux est l'ennemi du bien;
En bonté d'âme, en talents, en science;
Cherchons le mieux sur ces chapitres-là;
Ne brillaient pas parmi les beaux esprits;
Dans le logis des amis fréquentaient;
Beaucoup d'aisance, une assez bonne chère;
D'apprivoiser son humeur méprisante;
De courtisans elle avait une liste;
Arsène enfin conjura son Aline
De la tirer de son maudit pays.
« Je veux aller à la sphère divine:
Faites-moi voir votre beau paradis;
Me trouver bien que dans votre palais;
Lui parut riche et passablement beau;
Pour les jardins, c'est un miracle unique;
Aline dit: « Voilà votre maison;
Je vous y laisse un pouvoir despotique,
Commandez-y. Toute ma nation
Obéira sans aucune réplique.
J'ai quatre mots à dire en Amérique,
Il faut que j'aille y faire quelques tours;
Aline part. La belle en liberté
Reste et s'arrange au palais enchanté,
Commande en reine, ou plutôt en déesse,
De cent beautés une foule s'empresse
A prévenir ses moindres volontés.
A-t-elle faim? cent plats sont apportés;
De vrai nectar la cave était fournie,
Et tous les mets sont de pure ambroisie;
Ont accordé leurs murmures charmants;
Plus d'agréments environnaient sa vie;
Plus de beautés décoraient son séjour;
Ces sons vainqueurs allaient au fond des âmes;
Point d'homme ici! Suis-je dans un couvent?
Je trouve bon que l'on me serve en reine;
J'aime à régner, sur des hommes s'entend;
C'est leur destin, c'est leur premier devoir;
Ainsi parlait la recluse intraitable;
Et cependant les nymphes sur le soir
Avec respect ayant servi sa table,
On l'endormit au son des instruments.
Le lendemain mêmes enchantements,
Mêmes festins, pareille sérénade;
Le lendemain lui parut un peu fade;
Or, diamants, émeraudes, rubis,
Tout disparut à ses yeux ébaubis;
Vois en pitié le malheur qui me suit;
Quand on a peur, tout orgueil s'humanise.
Çà, donnez-moi votre bras, ma mignonne;
Ferme l'accès à toute repartie;
CONTE MORAL. (1772)
Voltaire
Dans ses écrits un sage Italien
Dit que le mieux est l'ennemi du bien;
En bonté d'âme, en talents, en science;
Cherchons le mieux sur ces chapitres-là;
Ne brillaient pas parmi les beaux esprits;
Dans le logis des amis fréquentaient;
Beaucoup d'aisance, une assez bonne chère;
D'apprivoiser son humeur méprisante;
De courtisans elle avait une liste;
Arsène enfin conjura son Aline
De la tirer de son maudit pays.
« Je veux aller à la sphère divine:
Faites-moi voir votre beau paradis;
Me trouver bien que dans votre palais;
Lui parut riche et passablement beau;
Pour les jardins, c'est un miracle unique;
Aline dit: « Voilà votre maison;
Je vous y laisse un pouvoir despotique,
Commandez-y. Toute ma nation
Obéira sans aucune réplique.
J'ai quatre mots à dire en Amérique,
Il faut que j'aille y faire quelques tours;
Aline part. La belle en liberté
Reste et s'arrange au palais enchanté,
Commande en reine, ou plutôt en déesse,
De cent beautés une foule s'empresse
A prévenir ses moindres volontés.
A-t-elle faim? cent plats sont apportés;
De vrai nectar la cave était fournie,
Et tous les mets sont de pure ambroisie;
Ont accordé leurs murmures charmants;
Plus d'agréments environnaient sa vie;
Plus de beautés décoraient son séjour;
Ces sons vainqueurs allaient au fond des âmes;
Point d'homme ici! Suis-je dans un couvent?
Je trouve bon que l'on me serve en reine;
J'aime à régner, sur des hommes s'entend;
C'est leur destin, c'est leur premier devoir;
Ainsi parlait la recluse intraitable;
Et cependant les nymphes sur le soir
Avec respect ayant servi sa table,
On l'endormit au son des instruments.
Le lendemain mêmes enchantements,
Mêmes festins, pareille sérénade;
Le lendemain lui parut un peu fade;
Or, diamants, émeraudes, rubis,
Tout disparut à ses yeux ébaubis;
Vois en pitié le malheur qui me suit;
Quand on a peur, tout orgueil s'humanise.
Çà, donnez-moi votre bras, ma mignonne;
Ferme l'accès à toute repartie;
