The gala was also supposed to host representatives of Ontario’s Italian-Canadian community, who went home frustrated and angry. Among them was Liberal MP and former minister of public safety Marco Mendicino. “You break the law, you should be arrested, charged and prosecuted. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Police need to enforce the law,” Mendicino posted Sunday on X. No arrests have been made thus far. Flavio Volple, president of the Automotive Parts Manufacturers’ Association, who was in attendance, slammed the response to the incident on X. “Toronto let 100 Hamas-supporters shouting for an ‘intifada’ cancel an event between two G7 Leaders tonight,” wrote Volpe. “For law enforcement to get outmaneuvered by the same people shouting hate every week begs so many questions. Tonight it’s an international embarrassment on this city.” It was just the latest embarrassment for Canada in recent months. Since Hamas’s Oct. 7 attack on southern Israel, and the country’s subsequent military operation in the Gaza Strip, there have been ongoing anti-Israel protests in Canadian cities that have escalated into disorder. Streets have been shut down, synagogues have been hit with firebombs, threats of violence have been brazenly shouted in shopping malls and now a meeting of G7 leaders has been called off... The assault of the policeman, the interruption of the arrest and the cancellation of the gala were celebrated by activists. How could they not regard them as great victories? Last weekend’s events were followed by two more disturbing incidents on Monday and Tuesday nights. On Monday, another mob massed outside the Montreal Holocaust Museum, blocked all the exits, threw up Nazi salutes, and chanted “Death to Israel, Death to Jews.” The local police failed to maintain a safe distance between the mob and the museum’s entrances as visitors were continually harassed. Then on Tuesday in Toronto, a meeting of the Liberal Party’s York Centre riding association was protested by another anti-Israel throng. They once again crowded the entrances and mocked the police when officers requested that a path be cleared for attendees to enter the building where the riding association was meeting. For years now, we have been told that Canada needs a “reckoning” about decolonization and climate justice. The only reckoning required at the moment is a reckoning about Canadian police officers’ reluctance to use stricter crowd control and enforce the law. The ease of shutting down events hosted by Canada’s highest level of elected government, and the ability to attack police without consequences, is proof that activists in Canada can control nearly any situation should they wish it, through legal means or otherwise. There is an unmistakable feeling that the rule of law has rapidly eroded in Canada since October. Take for instance the death threat uttered by an anti-Israel protester towards an individual at a Toronto shopping mall in December. He was caught on video, in full view of a group of police officers, threatening to put his target “six feet deep,” before his friends ushered him away without any action taken by police. The person who uttered the threat has since been identified and arrested. It is doubtful that he would have faced charges without the disturbing footage of his outburst being widely circulated. Canadian law enforcement and elected officials appear to be paralyzed when dealing with the persistence and strength of the anti-Israel protests that have only gotten bolder since Oct. 7. The atmosphere that led to this situation has been growing for the last decade, and we are now reaping the rewards of the law not being properly enforced. In 2020, activists protesting against the construction of the Coastal Gaslink pipeline in northern B.C. blocked highways on Vancouver Island, and blockaded railways across the country, all of which are crimes. Also in 2020, activists attempted to stalk then-B.C. premier John Horgan outside his family home near Victoria, intent on subduing him in a citizen’s arrest. The three individuals who participated would later have their charges stayed after signing peace bonds the next year. In 2021, Canada witnessed statues ripped down and churches burned across the country in response to the announcement that potential unmarked graves had been found at the site of a former residential school in Kamloops. There were little more than a few passive words of concern from most federal or provincial government representatives in response. Few were ever charged for vandalism, arson, or otherwise, and the strongest condemnation of these crimes came from Indigenous leaders. In 2022, about two-dozen persons, masked and armed with axes, stormed a Coastal GasLink worksite in B.C. They destroyed millions of dollars in equipment and threatened the safety of the workers. Not a single charge has been laid. It should come as no surprise that in 2023, those who protest a conflict taking place in the Middle East feel empowered to break the law in Canada at will. The Charter of Rights and Freedoms is a dynamic document that guarantees the right to free expression in Canada. It is not a license to block critical infrastructure, assault police officers and attack workers. Turning the tide against these brazen activists is critically overdue, as is the need to remind our citizens that laws still exist in Canada. It is time for our government, police and institutions to retake control of the situation, and to do so without any further delay."

Organizers such as Palestinian Youth Movement, Toronto4Palestine and Samidoun all openly endorsed the Oct. 7 massacre and called for the violent destruction of Israel, but they initially kept their public actions to street demonstrations and rallies. But after nearly six months of meeting little to no police pushback, the activities have grown demonstrably more brazen, with illegal blockades, intimidation and open antisemitism now a regular feature of the movement. This reached a new plateau over the weekend when an event at the Art Gallery of Ontario featuring Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his Italian counterpart was forced to close due to a deliberate blockade of the entrances by demonstrators wearing keffiyehs and waving Palestinian flags. “Tonight was a victory!” declared a Sunday Instagram post by protest organizer Palestinian Youth Movement Toronto. The blockade had been publicly advertised as an “Emergency Action,” with materials referring to Trudeau as “Genocide Justin.” Palestinian Youth Movement is the same group who, on Oct. 7, praised Hamas’s indiscriminate massacres in Southern Israel as the “active decolonization of Palestinian land.” They were instrumental in the first wave of celebratory “All Out for Palestine” rallies held in the immediate aftermath of the attacks. Emboldened by the cancellation of the Trudeau/Meloni event, on Sunday PYM Toronto warned of more blockades to come. “We will continue to come out and SHUT IT DOWN until our demands are met,” they wrote. The post also accused the Art Gallery of Ontario of being “complicit in genocide” by continuing to accept Jewish donations, which they branded as “Zionist funding.” Trudeau and his cabinet have long had their itineraries deliberately targeted by anti-Israel protests, but Saturday is the first time that law enforcement effectively lost control of the situation. “The location was not secure. And that was their objective. They don’t want their fellow Canadians to feel safe,” said Toronto-area Liberal MP Marco Mendicino, in a series of social media posts reacting to the cancellation. He referred to the demonstrators as “thugs” and “disgusting antisemitic protesters” who were “screaming, shoving and spitting at seniors.” Prior incidents targeting Trudeau have included a Feb. 15 incident in which demonstrators aligned with the Palestinian Youth Movement were able get past Parliamentary security and briefly disrupt a sitting of the House of Commons — an action that was applauded by several members of the NDP caucus. In mid-November, 100 Vancouver Police officers had to be dispatched to rescue Trudeau from a steakhouse that had its entrances barred by up to 250 anti-Israel demonstrators. In December, a similar-sized crowd attempted to force the cancellation of a Trudeau fundraiser at Vancouver’s Westin Bayshore hotel. Anti-Israel demonstrations have also taken a noticeable turn towards targeting Jewish sites with no apparent connection to Israel or the war in Gaza... The only apparent significance of the Avenue Road overpass was that it is the primary conduit into Canada’s densest Jewish neighbourhood. “Zionism once again fails to break the spirit of Palestinians,” read a post by Palesign after the blockade spurred counter-demonstrations from locals carrying Israeli flags. In a video, one blockader would refer to the overpass as lying within a “Zionist Infested Area.” And just last week, anti-Israel demonstrators on the campus of McGill University would organize a concerted blockade of the Bronfman Building. The building is materially no different than any of the others on campus, save for the fact that it bears the name of Jewish philanthropist Samuel Bronfman. Organizers included Solidarity for Palestinian Human Rights McGill, another group whose reaction to the Oct. 7 massacres was open jubilation."

The response was surprising to Abuhamdeh, who recalled other Girl Scout troops organizing to help families in Ukraine after Russia invaded in February 2022. According to the Girl Scouts website, a troop in Westlake, Ohio collected medical supplies and pack first-aid kits to be distributed in Ukraine, and “also exchanged small gifts like friendship bracelets and cookies”. Their efforts were rewarded with the Girl Scout Bronze Award, one of the organization’s highest recognitions. Abuhamdeh, who is Palestinian, said the stark contrast in response to her own troop’s similar effort was “hurtful”, and a triggering reminder of feeling excluded as a child because of her identity... The incident caught the attention of the Council on American Islamic Relations (Cair), who wrote directly to Girl Scouts of the USA for an explanation. In response, Bonnie Barczykowski, the Girl Scouts’ chief executive, said it was “disappointed and disheartened by what recently transpired” and “we recognize that greater clarity and additional education is needed regarding our Girl Scout fundraising policies”. Barczykowski added: “This is a learning moment for our organization as we realize we can always do better. We know we should always lead with empathy and recognize the incredible need for kindness and compassion during this difficult time. “We are also deeply committed to advancing belonging, inclusion, and anti-racism as an organization and within our membership, and we will continue to ensure that we address all communities, including the Muslim and Arab communities. “GSUSA will be working alongside our council partners to review this incident and make the necessary adjustments to prevent it from happening in the future. As a Gazan, I'm Horrified - "When I was 18, I attended a rally in support of Gaza in San Francisco during one of the wars between Israel and Hamas. I was soon identified by a news reporter as someone from Gaza whose entire family is still there, who asked me what I thought of rockets being fired at Israeli towns and cities. I said that I oppose indiscriminate violence against civilians everywhere and do not support Hamas, its ideology, or its actions. Soon after, an activist pulled me aside and fiercely scolded me, saying that I should never talk about the rockets and instead immediately "pivot" to the suffering of Gazans and Israel's role in what is happening. This has historically been the way with Hamas apologists who disguise themselves as pro-Palestine activists. They have a pathological aversion to discussing the faults, problems, mistakes, and grave errors of Palestinian political groups, factions, and leadership that have plagued the Palestinian national project with countless setbacks. So the strategy was to pivot the conversation away from the group's actions and focus on Israel's reactions, the occupation, and the plight of civilians. They marginalized the significance of Hamas as a contributing factor in the overall degradation of Gazans' living conditions and erased how the group's choices and actions brought war, death, and destruction upon its people. A few explicitly told me not to "air our people's dirty laundry" and that it would be better to maintain a "veneer of unity" and keep the focus on Israel. I was always troubled by such recommendations. Rife with inauthenticity, they also marginalized me, an actual Gazan, inexplicably demanding that I conform to the opinions and beliefs of privileged Western activists detached from what people in Gaza actually feel about Hamas and other Palestinian groups and leaders. Yet Hamas' Oct. 7 massacre of 1,200 Israelis, mostly civilians, has bred a far more disturbing form of Hamas apologia. Instead of their usual distracting methods, this time you had people actually gleefully endorsing Oct. 7 as a form of legitimate armed resistance to occupation. Others attempted to "contextualize" the attack by pointing out the conditions in Gaza and the overall injustices experienced by Palestinians. Still others tried to downplay the atrocities themselves—either their horrific nature or the numbers involved. This Hamas apologia is new. Something has fundamentally changed. Many Hamas apologists have upgraded, becoming actual enthusiasts. They are now less interested in using verbal gymnastics and manipulation and have become eager to show affection, empathy, admiration, and reverence for the group's tactics, methods, and strategies. Artistic and illustrative renderings of paragliders, bulldozers, and motorcycles made Hamas "cool" and hip, a sexy "symbol" of the underdog and underprivileged fighting back. These images were shared on social media, with thousands adding those pictures to their profiles, names, or bio lines... Hamas enthusiasts cloak their immorality in "intellectual" arguments for how international law grants the oppressed a blank check to commit any act they deem suitable to fight back and are entitled to use "all means necessary" to liberate themselves. They have an inhumane disregard for the over 200 Israeli hostages and murdered civilians. Hamas enthusiasts obfuscate the fact that no Gazans were being killed on Oct. 6 and that their beloved resistance group could have made different choices, which would have resulted in the loosening of the blockade and the unification of Gaza with the West Bank, improving the odds of obtaining a Palestinian state and ending the occupation. Most dangerously, Hamas enthusiasts erode support for the just and urgent cause of the Palestinian people, who have endured the consequences of a decades-long Israeli occupation, an embarrassingly incompetent Palestinian political class and leadership, and a largely indifferent Arab and international community. They further entrench an unhelpful narrative that refuses to work with Jewish and Israeli perspectives and grievances, worsening the impasse that is so chronically characteristic of the Israel and Palestine conflict... It isn't that hard to realize that Hamas paraded hostages as it released them, creating deceptively edited footage showing its supposed humanity, despite having violently captured these women and children and killed their loved ones on Oct. 7. Praising terrorists who committed horrendous atrocities because they high fived their captives as they let them go is indicative of moral bankruptcy and decay."

Speaking on Monday (March 4) during a debate on his ministry’s spending, Mr Chan also cautioned against “potential external interference” from parties with an agenda to undermine Singapore’s cohesion.
