Does chicken soup really help when you're sick? A nutrition specialist explains what's behind the beloved comfort food - "evidence suggests that the umami taste in chicken soup may help spur a bigger appetite. Participants in one study said they felt hungrier after their first taste of a soup with umami flavor added in by researchers. Other studies say umami may also improve nutrient digestion. Once our brains sense umami through the taste receptors on our tongues, our bodies prime our digestive tracts to absorb protein more easily. This can reduce gastrointestinal symptoms, which many people experience when they’re under the weather. Although most people don’t associate upper respiratory infections with gastrointestinal symptoms, research in children has found that the flu virus increased abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea symptoms... chicken soup can in fact lower the number of white blood cells traveling to inflamed tissues. It does this by directly inhibiting the ability of neutrophils, a type of white blood cell, to travel to the inflamed tissue. To truly understand the soothing and healing effects of chicken soup, it’s important to consider the soup’s ingredients. Not all chicken soups are packed with nutritious healing properties. For instance, the ultraprocessed canned versions of chicken soup, both with and without noodles, lack many of the antioxidants found in homemade versions. Most canned versions of chicken soup are nearly devoid of hearty vegetables. The core nutrients in homemade versions of the soup are what set these varieties apart from canned versions. Chicken provides the body with a complete source of protein to combat infection. Vegetables supply a wide array of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. If prepared the American way, noodles provide an easily digestible source of carbohydrate that your body uses for energy and recovery. Even the warmth of chicken soup can help. Drinking the liquid and inhaling the vapors increase the temperature of nasal and respiratory passages, which loosens the thick mucus that often accompanies respiratory illnesses. Compared with hot water alone, studies show chicken soup is more effective at loosening mucus. The herbs and spices sometimes used in chicken soup, such as pepper and garlic, also loosen mucus. The broth, which contains water and electrolytes, helps with rehydration. So, to maximize the health benefits of chicken soup, I recommend a homemade variety, which can be prepared with carrots, celery, fresh garlic, herbs and spices, to name a few ingredients. But if you need a more convenient option, look at the ingredients and nutrition facts label, and choose soups with a variety of vegetables over an ultraprocessed, nutrient-depleted kind."

New Zealand: Reverse April Fool nets woman luxury car - "A woman in New Zealand has won a luxury car after taking an apparent April Fool's joke at face value. It began with a car dealership's front-page advert in the New Zealand Herald newspaper. Titled "April Fool's Day special", it promised a brand new BMW to the first person who turned up to the showroom with their own car and the advert in hand. While many people likely suspected the advert was just another 1 April prank, one woman took the company at its word. Tianna Marsh drove her 15-year-old station wagon along to the dealership in the Auckland suburb of Newmarket at 05:30 local time, sales manager Gavin Penfold tells the paper, and was promptly rewarded with her new set of wheels. The car's number plate reads "NOF00L" and it's worth nearly NZ$50,000 (US$37,000; £25,000)... Ms Marsh's old car will be sold off to raise funds for a charity which helps disabled children"

Italy: Diary of a Wimpy Kid translated into Latin - "The best-selling children's book Diary of a Wimpy Kid has been translated into Latin by a Vatican official. The book, about the school-day struggles of a boy named Greg, is the first in a series written by American author Jeff Kinney, which has sold more than 150m copies worldwide. It's been translated by Monsignor Daniel B Gallagher, a Latin specialist who also curates the Pope's Twitter feed in the ancient language. Commentarii de Inepto Puero... "It was really fun writing more than 140 characters in Latin," Monsignor Gallagher tells the Ansa news agency, referring to the limited length of a tweet. Translating modern fiction into a 2,000-year-old language has its challenges, though. Some words and concepts just didn't exist in Roman times. "There is no equivalent for the phrase 'cross your fingers' in Latin," he explains. To convey the idea he had to be more descriptive and "explain the superstition in another way"."

India: Police enforce beef ban with cow 'mugshots' - "Police in one Indian state have told cattle owners to submit photographs of their livestock to help them enforce a new ban on selling beef. Officers in the city of Malegaon, in the western Maharashtra state, say the photos are needed for reference in case a criminal case arises under the recently introduced law, which bans the slaughter of all cows and sale and consumption of their meat"

Australian universities ban Indian students from Punjab, Gujarat and Haryana amid visa fraud concerns - "Two more Australian universities have banned the recruitment of students from some Indian states in response to fresh concerns over a surge in fraudulent visa applications, a media report said. The Federation University in Victoria and Western Sydney University in New South Wales wrote to education agents last week instructing them to no longer recruit students from Punjab, Haryana, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh, as well as the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir, The Sydney Morning Herald reported... "A large number of Indian students who commenced study in 2022 intakes have not remained enrolled, resulting in a significantly high attrition rate," the Western Sydney University told agents in a message sent on May 8. The university identified Punjab, Gujarat and Haryana as regions presenting the highest attrition risk... One in four applications from India are now being deemed as "fraudulent" or "non-genuine" by the Department of Home Affairs, the report said."
Damn racism!
Clearly applications from India need to be treated exactly the same as those from New Zealand, otherwise it's racist. Long wait times and high costs are no barrier to anti-racism

Rep. Ro Khanna sticking up for "genuine homeopathic products"... - "Rep. Ro Khanna @RepRoKhanna I sent a letter to the FDA today signed by 24 of my colleagues regarding the new guidelines on homeopathic products. More clarity is needed on how the FDA plans to ensure that genuine homeopathic products remain accessible while protecting consumers from unsafe products."

More income, less depression? Revisiting the nonlinear and heterogeneous relationship between income and mental health - "This paper uses a large-scale nationally representative dataset to examine the nonlinear effect of income on mental health. To investigate their causal relationship, the exogenous impact of automation on income is utilized as the instrument variable (IV). In addition, to explore their nonlinear relationship, both income and its quadratic term are included in regressions. It is found that the impact of income on mental health is U-shaped rather than linear. The turning point (7.698) of this nonlinear relation is near the midpoint of the income interval ([0, 16.113]). This suggests that depression declines as income increases at the lower-income level. However, beyond middle income, further increases in income take pronounced mental health costs, leading to a positive relationship between the two factors. We further exclude the possibility of more complex nonlinear relationships by testing higher order terms of income. In addition, robustness checks, using other instrument variables and mental health indicators, different IV models and placebo analysis, all support above conclusions. Heterogeneity analysis demonstrates that males, older workers, ethnic minorities and those with lower health and socioeconomic status experience higher levels of depression. Highly educated and urban residents suffer from greater mental disorders after the turning point. Religious believers and Communist Party of China members are mentally healthier at lower income levels, meaning that religious and political beliefs moderate the relationship between income and mental health."

Chinese Workers in Africa Who Marry Locals Face Puzzled Reception at Home - The Atlantic - "Not only is the policy prescription of relying on interracial marriages to solve China's complex gender imbalances as preposterous as the "babe tax," the racial comments (translated from Chinese) are fairly typical of the impolitic language used in China. It's pretty blase by Chinese standards, but certainly would be considered offensive in the West."

Eva Vlaardingerbroek on X - "BREAKING | 🇳🇱 Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte has announced he is available for the position of Secretary General at NATO. Mind you, this man who ruined our country in less than a decade. He sold our country out to the globalist agenda, flooded it with migrants, ruined our economy and is the man behind the destruction of our farmers. Now we know why he let the government fall some months ago - seemingly out of nowhere. It was all intentional, so he could secure himself a new job with his globalist friends. Now we know why he rushed the CETA treaty. Now we know why The Netherlands, under his rule, provided such an insane amount of financial support to Ukraine compared to other European countries. Now we know why he called the Ukraine-Russia war, “our war” and why he gave billions of our tax money to Ukraine and NATO. He was literally buying himself a new job."

Douglas Chow - "For all u new landlords out there, it is very common for your built in oven, steamers to trip electrical circuit breakers when left unused for a period of time. This is common when your tenant don't use it for a long time. And it can be stressful when your tenant keep calling u to complain about the power trips in your unit.
Such faults can be easily rectified.
1) Set the temperature to 50 degree celsius n ‘Top and Bottom Heat’ mode
2) When the temperature reaches 50 degree celsius, increase the set temperature to 80 degree celsius; when it reaches the set point, increase again to 150 degree celsius, and follow the same to get to 200 degree celsius.
3) Once the temperature reaches 200 degree celsius, increase the set temperature to 250 degree celsius and let it remain at the temperature for one hour.
4) Turn off the oven.
Do this at least once a month if the oven is hardly used.
Always advisable to gradually increase the oven temperature during the preheating process to avoid a sudden draw of high electricity which causes tripping.
You are welcomed! 🐰Happy tenant, happy landlord, happy bank account."

Is the Grass Always Greener? Comparing the Environmental Impact of Conventional, Natural and Grass-Fed Beef Production Systems - "The environmental impact of three beef production systems was assessed using a deterministic model. Conventional beef production (finished in feedlots with growth-enhancing technology) required the fewest animals, and least land, water and fossil fuels to produce a set quantity of beef. The carbon footprint of conventional beef production was lower than that of either natural (feedlot finished with no growth-enhancing technology) or grass-fed (forage-fed, no growth-enhancing technology) systems. All beef production systems are potentially sustainable; yet the environmental impacts of differing systems should be communicated to consumers to allow a scientific basis for dietary choices"

Man jailed for assaulting three women who refused to have sex with him - "The court heard that he committed two of the offences while he was out on bail. One involved an 18-year-old student who had posted an advertisement on Locanto selling her virginity. Abdul Rahman contacted her, introduced himself as Ray, and offered her S$5,000. They met up at Aljunied MRT Station on Aug 20 last year and checked into a hotel room in Geylang. After they both took a shower, she asked for the cash. However, Abdul Rahman refused and said he would pay after they had sex. When she tried to rebuff his advances, he punched her on the side of her head, grabbed her and forcefully swung her towards the bed."
Man offered S$2 to sex worker instead of agreed fee in repeat offence, gets jail - "A repeat offender on remission for refusing to pay sex workers after obtaining their services struck again, this time targeting an Australian woman who was in Singapore for a holiday. The woman charged S$700 (US$512) per hour, but Abdul Rahman A Karim offered her only S$2 after the deed. The 40-year-old Singaporean was sentenced to three years' jail and another 71 days' jail for breaching his remission order on Tuesday (Oct 31). Abdul Rahman pleaded guilty to one charge of dishonestly obtaining services for himself when he never intended to pay the victim S$700 per hour for her sexual services. The court heard that Abdul Rahman had previously been sentenced to 32 months' jail for the same charge with a similar modus operandi of inducing a sex worker to provide him her services and then refusing to pay her. While he was out on remission in November 2022 for this jail term, Abdul Rahman contacted his new victim, a 35-year-old Australian sex worker. The woman usually worked in Melbourne, and advertised her services and rates on a website. She charged S$700 an hour for her services, and S$750 an hour for "outcall situations", the court heard. On Nov 14 last year, the victim entered Singapore alone for a holiday. She was due to return to Australia 10 days later, and stated on her website that she was "currently touring in Singapore"... The victim contacted the Australian High Commission and Project X - a non-profit organisation for sex workers - before making a police report. Abdul Rahman deleted the victim's messages about her rates from his phone, giving the impression that they had never agreed on them. However, the full conversation was retained in the victim's phone."

6 in 10 of us will avoid vegans when looking for love, according to research - "Despite the rising popularity of veganism in the last decade, those who adopt a plant-based diet might struggle to find a romantic partner, according to new YouGov research commissioned by Sainsbury's. 6 in 10 said veganism is an 'unattractive' trait in a romantic partner and 41% said they would be less interested in someone if they listed ‘veganism’ as a trait on their online dating profile. In fact, differing differing dietary preferences were found to be the second least attractive trait in a partner (17%), right after opposing political views (37%)... kindness (96%), sense of humour (94%), physical attractiveness (73%), financial income (35%) were ranked as more important than dietary preferences (23%) when it comes to looking for love."

Boop. on Tumblr - "my favorite thing i’ve learned in college is that way back in ancient china there was this poet/philosopher guy who wrote this whole pretentious poem about how enlightened he was that was like “the eight winds cannot move me” blahblahblah and he was really proud of it so he sent it to his friend who lived across the lake and then his friend sends it back and just writes “FART” (or the ancient Chinese equivalent) on it and he was SO MAD he travels across the lake to chew his friend out and when he gets there his friend says “wow. the eight winds cannot move you, but one fart sends you across the lake”"
"i googled this bc i desperately wanted this to be real, and guess what…it is. the dude’s name was su dongpo (also known as su shi). his original poem went like this:

毫光照大千,
八風吹不動,
端坐紫金蓮
(Humbly bowed my head below all skies
Minutest lights shine through my deepest bounds
Immovable by strong winds from eight sides
Upon purplish gold lotus I seated straightly by the low mound) (x)
