Talk on X - "Face masks return to public transport and shops tomorrow but Prof Carl Heneghan doubts how effective they really are. "Germany and Austria mandated medical grade masks. They're now bringing in complete restrictions to deal with the rise in cases." @JuliaHB1 | @carlheneghan"
From 2021. Putting people in a "perpetual state of anxiety" is good when it serves political purposes

No evidence face masks protected vulnerable from Covid during lockdown, health officials admit - "There is not enough evidence to suggest medical-grade face masks protect vulnerable people from Covid, health officials have admitted.  A rapid review report published by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) investigated if high-quality masks, such as the N95, KN95 and FFP2 coverings, protect clinically vulnerable people in the community from catching Covid.  However, the report was unable to find a single piece of scientific research which had usable data... Some vocal academics entrenched in scientific politicking have vociferously defended their own position for the last three years while other scientists calling for more research have often been met with criticism.  Now, health officials are struggling with a lack of data which experts warn leaves us just as in the dark now as we were three years ago about whether masks work or not.  Prof Carl Heneghan, professor of evidence-based medicine at the University of Oxford, told The Telegraph it is “a significant failing” that there have not been high-quality trials done on the effectiveness of masks.  “I do not understand why there's been a lack of will to do high-quality trials in this area,” he said. “We have completely failed to address this issue and I actually consider that to be an issue that the [Covid] inquiry needs to look at... Prof Paul Hunter, Professor in Medicine at the Norwich School of Medicine, led a study at the end of 2020 looking at how effective masks were and used data on flu, as well as other viruses.  “Masks did reduce risk of transmission by about 20 per cent and in the early days of the pandemic that was really important,” Prof Hunter told The Telegraph. “But they were never the cast-iron guarantee that some people seem to have been saying. However, since the appearance of omicron masks no longer provide much if any value.  “The exception is people who remain particularly vulnerable to severe disease as there is some evidence that if you catch Covid whilst wearing a mask you generally get a less severe infection... Dr Aodhán Breathnach, a Consultant Global Health Microbiologist at UKHSA and a Consultant Medical Microbiologist at St George’s University Hospitals, recently published a study which found masks in hospitals had little impact on Covid transmission in the omicron wave.  He told The Telegraph that conducting randomised clinical trials for mask-wearing would be very difficult to do in practice.  “It is maybe surprising that there is no conclusive evidence one way or another [as to whether masks work], given that SARS-CoV-2 is perhaps the most studied virus ever, and masking was always a debated topic,” Dr Breathnach said.  “Nonetheless, the fact that the studies that do exist (including our own late addition) fail to show convincing evidence of benefit from masking suggests that, if there is a benefit, it is a rather modest one, i.e. masks may reduce the risk slightly but do not guarantee you won’t get infected.”"

COVID, Quickly, Episode 7: The Coming Pandemic Grief Wave, and Mask Whiplash | Scientific American - "there’s no way to know if someone who’s not wearing a mask has been vaccinated or not. It’s basically an honor code. And that could leave unvaccinated people—including young children—or immunocompromised people vulnerable to getting COVID. Plus, it makes it virtually impossible for businesses to enforce mask guidelines, which could make essential workers feel unsafe."
From 2021. Given that some people can never be vaccinated, clearly everyone must wear masks till the end of time. Weird how essential workers felt unsafe - why didn't they trust the "science" on the vaccines working?
Strange. I thought no one claimed the vaccines reduced transmission

Still masked 💙💙💙 on X - "I’m the only one masked at the gyno and lots of people are coughing. All these unmasked pregnant people make me feel sad.

Lots of covid hystericists in the replies Thread by @Rule3O3 on Thread Reader App – Thread Reader App - "Emergency mini 🧵on an insane drama unfolding in St. Louis. Heard this from a pal who teaches at Wash U: Yesterday, out of the blue, the health director (smiling below) staged a public policy putsch by imposing a mask mandate on the city. Evidently she did this without consulting - maybe without even warning - her mayor, the regional heads of hospital, local presbyters & big shots, etc. This was so irregular at first people thought the order might be a prank.  Turns out it was real. Her reason for issuing the mandate was to reduce strain on the hospital system, which she said was foundering under a surge of respiratory illness.  Interestingly, she did not justify masking as a response to Covid only, but to flu and RSV, citing case increases of 50% and 150% above the 5 year average.  Naturally this freaked people out even more, because linking mask mandates to bugs other than Covid implied they might never go away.  The peasants would’ve revolted, but they didn’t get a chance. The nobles beat them to it. People with titles complained, in chorus.  Could the Director of the Health Department, an Infectious Disease physician, really make a mistake this big, and dumb?  Why that’d be like finding out the president of Harvard is an impostor.  The hospitals made a statement: “We are not overwhelmed. So far this is a normal winter.” Ouch. This made it obvious she hadn’t bothered to talk to them, but had simply used the “shortage of ICU beds” copypasta from 3 years ago.  St. Louis docs must really like this gal because they helped her further into the ditch by pointing out a flaw some of you already noticed in her analysis:  The 5 year average includes an anomaly, winter 20-21, lowest for flu in the modern history of records.  Every normal year will be above the 5 year average until it excretes that anomaly.  Now this mistake too could have been easily avoided just by talking to a few members of the profession she makes policy for.  But incompetent people don’t like talking to competent ones. It’s not fun for them. Feels like being told you’re wrong all the time. Feels like not being in charge. They learn to avoid the experience. Today the mask mandate was rescinded. Lived less than 24hrs.  To save face they let her issue an “update” that “strongly recommends” masking.  I mean, you can’t have your Health Director losing her self-confidence in the midst of a crisis she imagined."
to add a correction:  The mandate was NOT for the entire city, just public employees.  (Though that makes the idea even *less* rational, because masking 10k out of 300k in a metro area with 3m has zero chance of producing any benefit. It’s homeopathy applied to NPIs.)"
Damn covid deniers! Besides being stupid and ignorant they are racist and sexist!

Canada's top doctor: 'consider using a mask' during sexual activity - "Canada’s top doctor dispensed some important sexual education today for those attempting to date during a pandemic: consider wearing a mask during sex.  Dr. Theresa Tam put out a statement Wednesday that covered how best to keep yourself safe from COVID-19 while engaging in sexual intercourse...   She recommends couples skip kissing and avoid “face-to-face contact or closeness” during sex, or “consider using a mask that covers the nose and mouth.”"

Vaccination Is Making America Forget a Basic Pandemic Rule - The Atlantic
From 2021. The logic of the article was very interesting - we were simultaneously told that covid vaccines reduce the risk of transmission and that the vaccinated still needed to wear masks. Of course, the immunocompromised were mentioned. So apparently everyone was supposed to wear masks for the rest of all time

Tracy Høeg, MD, PhD on X - "We reanalyze & expand the highly-influential Boston school mask study by Cowger et al published in @NEJM
- Our expanded sample actually found higher case rates (not significant) in the masking districts
- The authors' original findings did not hold up when not using the very specific Callaway Sant'Anna Diff in Diff methodology which we argue was inappropriate to use given the data they had
-We show districts that dropped masks 1st had the biggest drop in cases (!)
-We found prior immunity could explain up to 2/3 of the variation in case rates (!)
We discuss in detail why causal inference was inappropriate in the original paper (https://nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa2211029?query=featured_home) including statements about masks effectively reducing cases or being able to help mitigate structural racism"

Lack of correlation between school mask mandates and paediatric COVID-19 cases in a large cohort - "The association between school mask mandates and cases did not persist in the extended sample. Observational studies of interventions are prone to multiple biases and provide insufficient evidence for recommending mask mandates."

Anti-mask, anti-mandate activists focus on mid-term elections, turnout - The Washington Post - "A man in the audience yelled that Gabriel should run for governor.  “I will!” Gabriel replied. “I will run for governor. And I’ll run for president. And I’ll run for everything!” She waited a beat before adding: “Once I’m of legal age.”  That’s the kind of youthful energy far-right movements are working to harness across the country as they teach the pandemic’s newly minted activists how to get out the vote... Researchers say connections forged early in the pandemic allowed once-fringe groups to take on more visible roles in other kinds of organizing, such as the “Stop the Steal” effort to overturn the 2020 election results, or the campaign to whitewash U.S. history by attacking the teaching of racism and its impact. The nonstop focus on grievances, researchers say, has created a tinderbox of disenchanted Americans who view themselves as foot soldiers in a struggle against mandates and other perceived attacks on personal liberties"
From March 2022. Opposing any aspect of the left's agenda makes you "far right", and opposing their distortion of history means you're whitewashing it
Youth energy and enthusiasm for politics and social issues are only good when they're pushing the liberal agenda
A nonstop liberal focus on grievances is good, of course, because only liberals have valid grievances
The left can associate with, support and cheer terrorists (e.g. Oscar Lopez Rivera, Susan Rosenberg) of course and if you oppose them you're the bad person

Ashley Hughes: Liberals inexplicably clinging to travel mask and vaccine mandates - "Canada is now a solo traveler on the international stage when it comes to travel mandates for planes and trains — measures which increasingly appear to be punitive rather than backed by any evidence or logic.  As of May 16, the European Union no longer mandates face masks for air travel. This follows the removal of the federal mask requirement on public transport in the United States, after a federal judge ruled such mandates are unlawful. The U.S. was a laggard to the United Kingdom, which removed its mask mandates on aircraft a full month earlier, in March. The U.K.’s announcement was part of a much larger and more significant move, lifting all remaining travel restrictions, including coronavirus testing requirements, for unvaccinated visitors.  Meanwhile, Canada still has its closed-sky COVID policies firmly in place. The Trudeau government remains wilfully, even vindictively, stubborn in easing its tight grip on the few remaining restrictions within its control — namely, vaccine and mask mandates on federally regulated transport, including air and rail.  Under Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s leadership, the federal government is living in a parallel universe, totally out of step with almost any other western country, and even its own provincial governments. Canada’s vaccine mandate on domestic travel puts it in the company of North Korea and China. Almost every country in the world now allows its unvaccinated citizens to fly internationally, except for Canada. Even New Zealand and Australia — two of the most COVID-locked down countries on earth, relinquished such control last month. For weeks now, the unvaccinated Antipodeans have been free to travel both within and outside of their countries. According to the London Times, the list of countries now welcoming the unvaccinated include Lebanon, Cuba, Kazakhistan, and Saudi Arabia. It will take years, if ever, for Canada’s aviation and tourism industries to recover from their glaring absence on the world stage of global air travel.  Moreover, I can’t help but wonder what Trudeau, the senior, would think of the junior? After all, it was Pierre Trudeau who enshrined minority rights in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, for this very situation that sees the majority being allowed to run roughshod over the minority. He seemed to have a special insight into the power of a herd mentality that can sometimes sweep through a nation, particularly during a national emergency... The Trudeau administration continues to spout the tired and utterly discredited line of “we are following the science,” but what science is this? That line is an ideology itself — a blind belief in some sort of vague definition of “the science.”  How about common sense? Pragmatically speaking, if this is evidence-based public health policy, shouldn’t federal politicians be asking why “Canadian science” is so different from that followed by the country’s own provinces and much of the rest of the world, save for communist China?"
From May 2022. When covid policies are political...

Should masks be worn outdoors? - "Wearing face coverings outside should be normalised because it may reduce transmission of SARS-CoV-2 in some situations—and may encourage mask wearing indoors, where risks are greater—say Babak Javid, Dirk Bassler, and Manuel B Bryant. But Muge Cevik, Zeynep Tufekci, and Stefan Baral argue that outdoor transmission contributes very little to overall infection rates and that efforts should focus on reducing indoor transmission"
From 2021. Basically, virtue signalling and doing the "right" thing with no heed about cost-benefit analysis - a good description of mask fetishism. Of course, given that we know that there's no good evidence for masks...

Kevin Bass PhD MS on X - "CDC acknowledges significant harms of N95s due to CO2 buildup (https://t.co/JQWka8tvhG)👇 To avoid these, CDC recommends not wearing N95 for more than 1 hour. In other words, all-day use advocated by today's public health elite causes harm, without demonstrated benefit"
Weird. Didn't they watch all those videos by people wearing N95s on treadmills "proving" that N95s don't reduce oxygen in the blood?

Thread by @ShiraDoronMD on Thread Reader App – Thread Reader App - "Why I believe it is simultaneously true that masks work and mask mandates do not work. The reasons form the basis for our ability to move forward together. A long🧵 First, masks. I don’t pay attention to simulations and mannequin studies. Those of us who write COVID policies for healthcare settings started with this systematic review and meta-analysis which used data from COVID and other 🦠s. N95s were in disgustingly short supply that first spring. Many hospitals reserved them for COVID patients undergoing high risk procedures only. We wore surgical 😷 for the rest. And we found something amazing: HCWs weren’t higher risk than other essential workers. Despite prolonged close contact (we practically bathe in 🦠 all day), seroprevalence rates among HCWs were consistent with the surrounding community, and patient facing HCW were not at greater risk than non patient facing. @ericashenoy summarized it in these slides in 2020. Little known fact: the patients, for the most part, are not wearing masks. One-way masking is how we have always used them. On the sick person or the HCW, not both. Oh, and if you’re worried the holes are too big? That’s ok. The electrostatic charge is part of the mechanism.
So if masks work, why don’t mask mandates?
Because:
a. Most spread happens in places you wouldn’t wear a mask (at home, at social gatherings with friends etc, not at the grocery)
b. People are wearing cloth masks (which don’t work)
c. People aren’t wearing them right
d. It’s not realistic to expect that people keep a mask on all the time, because they need to eat and drink (traveled by air before the mandate lifted? people are eating and drinking every second in airport and plane)
That’s not to say that we need to tighten the mandate & require continuous wearing of N95s. Countries/cities/schools with mandates haven’t had different shaped curves than those without, even if they required N95s. Plus if you mandate medical grade PPE, you’d better provide it. What does this mean? It means mandates are not effective or necessary, even when cases are rising. They cause rifts in society for no reason. If you’re high-risk or risk averse, a medical grade mask will protect you as well as it would if others were wearing it too. in this @landmanspeaking interview hit the nail on the head. There are more important things we should do to protect the public, like vaccinations and testing to treat. Getting COVID is inevitable, so I’m not willing to hide my face forever. Let’s get back to a place of mutual respect. Of evidence-based science rather than ideology. *That* is how we take care of each other."
Like most covid measures, mask mandates are about politicising covid, so

Meme - Mohamad safa: "Until you do 30 minutes+ of CPR in a plastic gown, surgical mask, two pairs of gloves and a face shield, you should probably stop complaining about wearing some fabric on your face to the grocery store."
Does this logic apply to all the First World Problems liberals bitch about too?

Tucker Carlson, Unmasked - The Atlantic - "Social media has so conditioned people to expect hyperbole that there’s a perverse satisfaction when a clip is truly as bad as advertised. Last night, a viral tweet claimed that Fox News’s Tucker Carlson had told his audience to harass people on the street wearing masks—and to “call the police immediately; contact child protective services” if they saw a child wearing one."
Harming children is only good when liberals approve
As usual with liberal anti-Tucker Carlson hit jobs, this misrepresents what he said (besides not engaging at all with the argument but just taking the fact that he's bad as axiomatic). Luckily, the transcript is available so those who are interested in what he actually said can look it up and unsurprisingly he said something different. He actually recounted the science about covid very accurately and pointed out the hypocrisy of the public health establishment is sanctioning BLM protests/riots despite covid, while pressing for outdoor masking. To liberals, asking them polite questions amounts to "harassment" (Carlson said to "Ask politely but firmly") - this is yet more proof that liberal claims of "harassment" and "bullying" are bunk, since they regard their views being challenged as "harassment"

No joke: smile training booms in Japan as face masks slowly come off | South China Morning Post - "Himawari Yoshida, 20, one of the students taking the class as part of her school’s courses to prepare them for the job market, says she needed to work on her smile... An hour-long one-on-one lesson costs 7,700 yen (US$55)... while the government may have lifted its recommendation to wear masks in March, many people have still not let them go on a daily basis. A poll by public broadcaster NHK in May showed 55 per cent of Japanese saying they were wearing them just as often as two months earlier. Only 8 per cent said they had stopped wearing masks altogether.  Tellingly, roughly a quarter of the art school students who took the class kept their masks on during the lesson. Young people have, perhaps, become used to life with masks, Kawano said, noting that women might find it easier to go out without make-up and men could hide that they hadn’t shaved."

This was in response to an extraordinary meltdown over a news article (linked below). Of course, we know that the press needs to be censored based on left wing demands, and liberal reaches are obvious and no one can question them

How a pandemic measure is being exploited by criminals: security experts - "Security experts have noticed thieves and purse snatchers are often wearing medical masks while they commit crimes.  “We are seeing a lot of people who are up to no good keeping masks on, and I’m sure it’s to aid in their ability to do what they want to do,” said James Blight with Paladin Security.  Last week in Richmond, two men wearing masks were caught on surveillance video trying to steal bags from patrons of a popular seafood restaurant. They were chased down by staff who managed to retrieve a stolen bag, but RCMP say the masked men have not been identified. “I think the normalization of the medical mask makes it very challenging, it adds to the anonymity that a thief can have when they want to do something criminal,” said Blight.  There is a separate criminal code charge for committing a crime while concealing ones identity.  “If you commit a crime while you’re disguised, it is worse on the eyes of the law than if you commit a crime when you’re not disguised. But because of the normalization of medical masks, I don’t think we are going to see that pursued by Crown,“ said Blight."

The Lone Masker on X - "Lone Masker in the dr office waiting room... the nurse and dr masked for me but I witnessed their coworkers laughing, questioning, and subtly mocking them/me for masking. Trans Women in Female Spaces / Wishing Transphobes an Uncomfortable Month / Fake News on Trans Killing

"I'm 100% in favor of trannies being in ALL female spaces, they are used disproportionately to organize left wing events and causes and filling them with trannies will make them uncomfortable and dysfunctional. The same strategy was applied against men to destroy most of our hobbies over the last decade or so, time for a little payback. There should be no organization for women without a tranny in the leadership openly masturbating and creeping out people, they need to be in women's shelters, feminist movements, knitting circles, I never want a woman to be able to meet with another woman in confidence without a tranny standing over them talking about his diaper fetish and how them complaining about his behavior is the real crime. Links - 4th August 2024 (1 - Kamala Harris)

Michael Shellenberger on X - "Democrats who support Harris appear to think that her being a half-black woman makes her a unique and gifted politician. But Harris is the opposite of unique. She rose to the top by conforming, not standing out.   Nor is she gifted. Throughout her political career, Harris hewed to the demands of Democratic interest groups and the political consultants who serve them. She inherited the political machine created by her former boyfriend, Willie Brown.  As a result, Harris has avoided facing substantial competition, and the one time she did in 2020, voters resoundingly rejected her.   Despite this rejection, Harris was handed a position as Vice President in what was widely perceived as a strategic move by Biden to put a black woman on the ticket.   Holding Harris to low standards reflects the soft bigotry and patronizing attitude of Democrats toward minorities. Because the Party has essentially coddled Harris, she has not been forced to grow as a leader in ways she otherwise might have. That Harris is now consolidating support as Democrats’ best hope of defeating Trump points to a major legitimacy crisis for the Party, as well as for the media and the federal bureaucracies that are heavily aligned with it.  It was only possible for such an unpopular candidate to gain the Party’s support because, since 2016, Democrats and the mainstream media have gone to extreme lengths to subvert democracy in order to target Trump.   These lengths have included the Russia collusion disinformation campaign, mass censorship of political speech, attempts to criminalize political opposition, and an effort to prevent Trump from running for office again.  All these activities have eroded the legitimacy of the state, the media, and the Party. Their legitimacy depends on public confidence. This confidence diminishes when these institutions so transparently undermine civil rights, fail to meet citizens’ needs and operate without integrity.  The war on democracy led by Democrats, the press, and the “deep state” has, in this way, ultimately helped Trump gain support. At the same time, it has left Democrats without good options to defeat him.  By favoring woke, racialist politics over a substantive political platform and by selecting nominees in an anti-democratic process for three presidential elections in a row, Democrats have been left with an extremely weak candidate.   By consistently showing bias for over eight years, the mainstream media has lost prestige and is no longer in a position to shape and manipulate public opinion in favor of Harris.   And, by weaponizing government against Trump and his supporters, federal agencies have inspired hatred and distrust among many members of the public who may view Harris as the anointed figurehead of this broken deep state bureaucracy."

California has the highest taxes in the country. Highest housing prices. Highest gasoline prices. Only the richest people can afford the American dream in California. People are leaving the state in droves for a more affordable life in states with better government. Companies are leaving too, to escape burdensome regulations and taxation.  California used to be the greatest state in the nation, back in the 1970s when Ronald Reagan was the governor. "The most multidimensional Kamala clusterfuck came a month after she entered the primaries, when she appeared on the streaming morning show The Breakfast Club. She immediately found the casual, relaxed gear that can be her most winning, and for a while was winning indeed But she was too anxious to ingratiate herself with the show's younger, cooler co-hosts, DJ Envy, Angela Yee, and Charlamagne tha God. At one trouble making point, she too gleefully owned up smoking to weed in college: "I did inhale HEH HEH HEH HEH." Asked about her favorite music, she named "Tupac" and "Snoop." The music answer drew a wave of ridicule. Some of the flak came from bad-faith click baiters looking for any excuse to attack her. But some (mine, for instance) came from. being genuinely confused by the show's cross-talk into thinking Kamala had claimed to have listened to Tupac Shakur and Snoop Dogg in college. She attended Howard University in the mid- before Tupac or Snoop had started recording. In fact. Kamala wasn't referring to her college years, And really, how could that have been the case? Pros don't make that kind of mistake. The reason the calumny had legs was that Kamala had slipped from her casual vibing mode into cringe ingratiation. It was visible in her body language, audible in her voice, and made a far-fetched interpretation seem plausible In another excessively ingratiating move during the same Breakfast Club broadcast, Kamala told Charlamagne tha God that legalizing marijuana came naturally to her. Why? "Half my family's from Jamaica. Are you kidding me? MEH HEH HEH HEH HEH." The joke infuriated her Jamaica-born father, Donald Harris, a retired Stanford development economist who had devoted his previous two decades to improving Jamaica's economy. In a public letter to Jamaica Global Online, Professor Harris issued a mind-blowing rebuke of his daughter's "travesty." He evoked their sober, hard- working ancestors "turning in their grave" at seeing their reputations besmirched by the "fraudulent stereotype of a pot-smoking joy seeker." He accused Kamala of deploying the stereotype "in the pursuit of identity politics.""

Black Lives Matter Denounces Democrats for 'Anointing' Kamala Harris - Newsweek - "Black Lives Matter criticized Democrats for not giving voters a say—and called on the Democratic National Committee to host a virtual snap primary ahead of the party's convention in August... "Democratic Party elites and billionaire donors are attempting to manipulate Black voters by anointing Kamala Harris and an unknown vice president as the new Democratic ticket without a primary vote by the public," Black Lives Matter said in a statement.  "This blatant disregard for democratic principles is unacceptable. While the potential outcome of a Harris presidency may be historic, the process to achieve it must align with true democratic values." The organization added: "We do not live in a dictatorship. Delegates are not oligarchs. Any attempt to evade or override the will of voters in our primary system—no matter how historic the candidate—must be condemned. We demand an informal, virtual snap primary now that the incumbent president is no longer in the running."... Black Lives Matter said any process that does not include voters could undermine Harris, or another Democrat, if they win the White House in November.  "Let us be clear: This is about the Democratic Party following a process that protects the legitimacy of any future Democratic president following this unprecedented moment," the statement said.  "Installing Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee and an unknown vice president without any public voting process would make the modern Democratic Party a party of hypocrites. It would undermine their credibility on issues related to democracy. "Imagine our first Black woman president not having won some sort of public nomination process. Ann Vandersteel™️ on X - "Fun fact: If Elon Musk hadn’t bought Twitter and turned it into X, we’d all be getting banned right now for even SAYING “border czar,” and for questioning Kamala’s race."

The Real Reason Harris’s Time as ‘Border Czar’ Is a Political Vulnerability - "Since Joe Biden announced his intention to withdraw from American public life at the end of his term, the Trump campaign and its Republican allies have focused on their new opponent’s subpar performance handling border security. The GOP’s strategy makes sense. For all the media’s efforts to revise or even erase history, Harris was, in function if not title, the Biden administration’s “border czar.” And yet, the Republican Party’s approach to this messaging campaign has so far been to frame Harris as a fully empowered functionary who nevertheless bungled her charge. In reality, the Biden administration set Harris up to fail, as a way of providing the president cover for his own dismal mishandling of the border... the president tapped his vice president not to bring the crisis under control but to take the blame for it.  Harris was not empowered to oversee the administration’s policing efforts on the border, spearhead negotiations on the Hill to reform U.S. asylum law, or negotiate deportation regimes with the nations beyond Mexico’s borders from which most migrants were coming. She was charged with “talking” to the leaders of Mexico and the nations that make up Central America’s “Northern Triangle” to address the “root causes” of migration. You know, “gang violence and trafficking and cartels,” the president said at the time, but also “natural disasters, hurricanes, floods, earthquakes.” If the vice president had the power to mitigate phenomena like that, she’d be overqualified to merely preside over the Senate.   In fact, Harris wasn’t granted any power at all, and she treated the role with which she’d been saddled like the burden it was. Within weeks, her conspicuous failure to even visit the border she’d been tasked to oversee became a political liability — one her lack of political talent only made worse. But within a few months of her accession to the role, Harris started producing the only results she could: A commitment from twelve private companies to “invest” in the region, the deployment of a USAID disaster team to provide “food assistance” and “poverty reduction,” and roughly $300 million in humanitarian assistance.  All this was supposed to mitigate the “push” factors driving migrants north, but its effects soon proved negligible. The initiative’s failure came as no surprise to Kamala Harris or her staff. By June 2021, Harris’s aides were telling reporters that they had begun to “panic” over the torment to which Biden had consigned them. As CNN reported at the time, “her assignment was being mischaracterized and could be politically damaging if she were linked to the border.” Indeed, “potentially opening her up to criticism for the handling of the seemingly intractable problem” was why Harris was tapped to be the face of the administration’s failures on the border in the first place.  The president’s staff never missed an opportunity to undermine Harris’s conduct in her new role, promulgating the subtle implication that the horrors at the border were an outgrowth of her mismanagement of the crisis. The exercise in misdirection was so effective for the Biden administration that it went back to the same well on several subsequent occasions. Harris was soon given the task of combating state-level Republican efforts to reform voting systems, over which she had zero authority. The White House even dispatched her to Europe to stop Russia from invading Ukraine just three days before Russian forces cascaded over the Ukrainian border. All the while, White House staff scoffed at Harris’s failures in on-background conversations with the press... the reported tensions between Harris’s office and Biden’s staff and the lingering hostility toward Harris nursed by Jill Biden, who was said to have not forgiven the vice president for sandbagging her husband in the Democratic Party’s 2019 primary debates, are indicative of why she was treated like a receptacle into which the most thankless and insurmountable tasks were dumped.  The president’s staffers routinely retailed the notion that Harris was unelectable to the presidency, in part because of how poorly she managed the roles with which they had burdened her. Engineering this self-fulfilling prophecy served the president’s purpose at the time, which was to neutralize his most viable Democratic rival. In the end, even his methodical effort to undermine his own likely successor could not save Biden from the ravages of time... Harris is indelibly tainted by her association with the Biden administration’s failures. The GOP should not shy away from Harris’s record, which is a story both of incompetence and of how little faith her own allies have in her political acumen and capabilities as an executive. If Harris’s own boss could not trust her with some of the awesome duties and powers of his office, why should we?"

Thread by @SaysSimulation on Thread Reader App – Thread Reader App - "Thinking about the first week of the Harris campaign, which is basically a huge wave of coordinated media propaganda - it's the most female presidential campaign I've ever seen.  Not just the candidate - it's about gender, it's about race, about attitudes, about being a "brat"
It's about the mean girls getting together and doing a little character assassination, attacking Vance & the other white guys as being weird, creepy incels. From a female perspective, it must be awesome.  What it lacks is any semblance of substance, of logic, of debating the issues, or of proposing solutions to the greatest challenges the United States has faced in my lifetime.  None of that is there. Just female group posturing, to gain popularity points while socially annihilating the competition.
This nation is in very bad shape fundamentally in multiple areas.  Geopolitically, the US is losing around the world, fast, as the Ukraine war gets worse, the US is unable to protect sea routes, West Africa is lost, Venezuela threatens war in the hemisphere, and the Middle East  threatens to blow up with the expansion of the war to Lebanon.  Financially, the US is in rapidly worsening shape as it relies on the highest peacetime deficit spending in history to try to hold the economy together, as the national debt soars out of control, as BRICS+ membership surges around the world in an explicit attempt to dethrone the dollar.
The borders are open.  Half the nation thinks Civil War is likely.
Yet, none of these issues matter, because let's face it - this has become the most gender dominated race in our history. Kamala doesn't understand this stuff, and has no solutions. Her female base doesn't care, because they don't understand it - or even care about substance - at all.  Yay! Girl Power! We get all the money and good jobs! Forget about all those creepy incel white guys trying to talk about things that nobody cares about! Dance!
As explored extensively in other 🧵s, I believe that an economic reckoning is on the way when the reserve status of the $ is lost, the US can no longer borrow the money to pay for what the national standard of living is based upon, and standards of living plunge.
One of the very hardest hit sectors of the economy is urban women getting paid way too much for doing very little.  The Kamala voters are likely to be devastated. And it will be the right & proper result of their turning presidential elections into female popularity contests. imo"

Brennan said Sunday that “some of what Mr. Trump talks about could be illegal.”... the Biden administration announced that it would bar asylum for undocumented migrants who cross into the country if illegal crossings exceed 2,500 per day for seven consecutive days — a “crackdown” that will still allow at least 1.8 million asylum seekers into America each year even if fully enforced... Monopsony and the wage effects of migration - "In a generalization of the well-known "immigration surplus" result, we show immigration must always increase the average native worker's marginal product, in any long-run constant returns economy. But in a monopsonistic labor market, immigration may also affect native wages through the mark-downs imposed by firms. Using standard US census data, we reject the restrictions implied by the traditional competitive model. We find that immigration increases mark-downs, and this effect quantitatively dominates the improvements in natives' marginal products. The capture of migrants' rents significantly expands the total surplus going to natives, but redistributes income among them (from workers to firms)."
"Using U.S. Census data, Amior and Manning (2022) show that the immigration-induced mark-downs in the wages of native-born workers exceed the average gain in their productivity from immigration. Moreover, their analysis suggests that the increase in firms’ monopsony power is driven mostly by undocumented migrant workers who have the least ability to respond to wage mark-downs by quitting their jobs."

GERMANY: Woman Convicted Of “Offending” Migrant Gang Rapists Receives Longer Prison Sentence Than The Rapists - "A 20-year-old woman in Hamburg, Germany, has been sent to prison after making “hateful” remarks towards a migrant who was involved in the gang rape of a child. The woman is just one of 140 people being investigated for making “harmful comments” towards the rapists.  The horrific assault took place in 2020, and involved multiple groups of migrant men independently attacking a 14-year-old girl in Hamburg’s Stadtpark over the course of one night...   Confused and alone, the girl was defenseless against the first mob of four predators.  The men took turns on the girl, repeatedly raping her over an extended period of time. They robbed her of her wallet and cellphone before leaving her. Traumatized and disoriented from the first attack, and having no method of calling for help, the girl was assaulted a second time by two more men who took advantage of her vulnerable state.  Disturbingly, her assailants had begun inviting other men to rape her via their chat groups, gleefully sharing the news that there was an isolated teenage girl in the dark park with no potential witnesses.  The child was attacked a third time by a single man, and then a fourth time by three more men, who dragged her into a bush and sexually assaulted her.  Finally, the child managed to break away and ran, though pursued by her rapists. Eventually, she came across people who recognized her traumatized state and immediately called the police.  A total of 11 men were initially charged, but two were acquitted quickly due to a lack of DNA evidence. The sperm of nine of the men, however, had been successfully recovered from the girl’s body.   Five of the men were in possession of German passports, while the remainder were not citizens of Germany. Among those charged, none were of German heritage. The rapists were identified as a Pole, an Egyptian, a Libyan, a Kuwaiti, an Iranian, an Armenian, an Afghan, a Syrian, and a Montenegrin. The men had a team of 20 defense attorneys arguing their innocence.   Videos of the first and third rapes had been recorded and shared by the assailants to contacts through WhatsApp, but the videos were deleted before the case could be heard in court. Witnesses who did see the footage before its deletion did testify that it depicted clear sexual assault, with one noting that the girl had been holding her hands over her head in a protective position.  During the trial, the victim, who now suffers from PTSD as a result of the night of abuse, was called upon to speak about what happened to her. While she recounted her horrific ordeal, the men showed “no signs of remorse” and at least one is said to have almost fallen asleep during proceedings.  However, despite DNA and WhatsApp evidence, eight of the nine men convicted walked free with probation and spent no time in prison at all. The ninth was sentenced to two years and nine months in prison without parole.   The case caused outrage in Germany, both for the brutality of the rape itself and the lenient sentences given to the rapists... Angered by the news of the case, a 20-year-old woman from Hamburg messaged the number through WhatsApp. The unnamed woman called him a “dishonorable rapist pig” and a “disgusting miscarriage.” She added: “Aren’t you ashamed when you look in the mirror?”  The targeted rapist then reported the woman to police, and she was charged with sending him insulting messages.  The woman has now been convicted and sentenced to a weekend in prison for her remarks — meaning that she will have spent more time in jail than 8 of the 9 rapists"

I don’t think I’ll go to the beach again.  There are no Christmas decorations in the stores anymore.   But sometimes I notice there’s decorations for Diwali. I don’t know what that is.   Most days I just sit inside and watch TV.  The TV tells me I need to respect other cultures.  For some reason that means no more Easter eggs or Australia Day or Christmas.   Sometimes I wonder what would happen if I migrated to Pakistan and told them to change their whole country just to make me feel comfortable.   I don’t think they’d like that but I don’t want to assume.   And sometimes it feels like my culture’s being squeezed out existence.   Suffocated by all these new people being poured on top of it.   I don’t really know why they moved here.   The streets don’t look the same anymore.   There’s no sense of community.  We’re all just strangers who live close to each other by some strange chance."

In fact, we had the most successful immigration policies of any country in the whole of Europe, no question. Now, it is so totally out of control, just think about this. 2 and a half million people have come in the last 2 years. Outrage in Germany after Afghan migrant 'rapes two girls' - "A man who raped an 11-year-old girl in Germany was released from custody after 12 days and then went on to rape a 13-year-old just five weeks later, it is alleged.    The Afghan migrant's alleged sex crimes have caused outrage in Germany where politicians are calling for his deportation if he is found guilty.  The 23-year-old, named as Zubyr S., was first arrested in June but released less than two weeks later after authorities claimed there was no evidence he was likely to re-offend.   However, last Friday, he allegedly lured a 13-year-old girl into a corridor and raped her, leading to his second arrest when the girl described him to investigators... the suspect had been released from custody on July 3 after authorities ruled there was no danger he would re-offend or try to escape."
From 2020

Despite raping 11-year-old girl, Afghan migrant allowed to remain in Germany - "The Afghan asylum seeker who was convicted for raping an 11-year-old girl in the central German town of Neustrelitz in January is still in the country, and it appears he will face no threat of deportation.  The controversial decision to allow him to remain on German territory is due to the “special protection of minors within the Dublin III Agreement,” according to Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania’s Interior Minister Christian Pegel (SPD). In addition, the nationality of the convicted sex offender has not been completely clarified, so while the man is listed as an Afghan, the German government is reportedly unsure of that designation...  the Afghan migrant, who entered Germany as an unaccompanied minor, was convicted in July of this year, but outrage followed after he was only given a suspended sentence and served no jail time. There was no record of his actual age at the time of his arrest, and given that a huge number of migrants lied about their age upon entering Germany, a doctor was asked to determine his age, which he estimated at 16. Due to his status as a “minor,” he was given a relatively light sentence.  Police believe the perpetrator and the 11-year-old victim were probably loosely acquainted and likely on a date. It is still unclear whether they knew each other through a circle of acquaintances or had met before the incident...   Often, despite committing serious crimes, migrants face no deportation risk in Europe, such as in the case in Sweden where a 39-year-old migrant raped a 9-year-old girl but was allowed to remain in the country because authorities approved his citizenship before the incident. It is also not the only case involving an Afghan raping an 11-year-old girl in Germany, with a similar case occurring in 2018. In that case, the girl was a special-needs student, and the 22-year-old asylum seeker raped her with two accomplices. Thread by @billybinion on Thread Reader App – Thread Reader App - "This is Laurens van Beek.  Not long ago, he was kicked out of the U.S.—even though he immigrated here as a child. Legally.  The kicker: If his family had come *illegally* he would've gotten to stay.  A thread on our insane immigration system.
DACA protects some folks from deportation if they arrived in the U.S. illegally as kids. Many recipients do not know any other country but America as home.  Laurens can relate.  But his story diverges in a crucial way: His family came here lawfully. When Laurens was 7, his family immigrated to Iowa. This is his home.  But because his parents came on a small business visa, he didn't qualify for DACA, which only protects the undocumented.  So Laurens was expelled not in spite of coming to the U.S. legally—but because of it. There are 250,000 people like Laurens, known as "Documented Dreamers." They come to the U.S. on dependent visas.  And if they can't find another visa or get a green card by the time they turn 21, they're forced to leave—often to countries they've never known. Monstrous. This is Roshan Taroll with his little brother.  After legally immigrating here with his mom, the family got in line for green cards. But because our system is a circus, Roshan couldn't get one before he turned 21.  So after 16+ years here, he was kicked out last month. It can't be overstated how bonkers our system is. Roshan's case is a good example.  The gov't restricts how many green cards can be allotted annually to each nationality, punishing people from certain countries.  Folks from India will wait...134 years. Many will die in line. Roshan's mom was one of them. She died of cancer after waiting years for permanent residence.  "All she wanted was for me and my brother to work hard and have a chance at the American dream," Roshan told me.  Well, he won't get the chance. Just awful. A bipartisan group of lawmakers want to protect Documented Dreamers from deportation. It's common sense.  But the bills keep dying in Congress.  "Comprehensive immigration reform has become the enemy of incremental reform," @RandPaul told me: @RandPaul It's an indictment on our politics that this is still a question.  The folks who came here as kids—whether legally or illegally—had no say in the matter. Many don't even speak the language of their home country.  Wild that we're still debating this. @RandPaul Politicians talk a big game about immigrating here "the right way." And then the gov't punishes these young people for doing so.  It's not conservative, progressive, libertarian, or otherwise to defend that. Because that's simply indefensible."

French Woman Testifies on the Threat of Islamic Migrants - 'Today Nantes is Becoming More and More like Kabul' (Video) - RAIR - "Melissa, a resident of Nantes, France, recently delivered a testimony shedding light on her personal experiences, which revealed a distressing pattern—she endured multiple assaults, all perpetrated by migrant men. Melissa’s account resonates with a growing sentiment among citizens who increasingly feel that their safety is compromised due to the city’s migration policies. Directed towards Johanna Rolland, the mayor of Nantes, Melissa’s testimony underscores the disastrous consequences of poorly conceived migration policies. She expressed her deep disappointment in the mayor’s reluctance to acknowledge the adverse impact of these policies on the safety of Nantes’ inhabitants, attributing it to ideological reasons. Importantly, Melissa divulged that even individuals who are progressive privately recognize the problems associated with migrants but hesitate to address them publicly. This sentiment among concerned residents reflects a broader concern that Nantes, a city steeped in Breton culture, is gradually losing its distinctive heritage and identity due to shifting demographics. Melissa’s assertion that Nantes is becoming more like Islamic Kabul indicates the significant cultural transformation witnessed in the city. As an alarming example, a Muslim soccer tournament scheduled in Nantes this weekend has raised the alarm among locals. The sharia-adherent event will feature prayer from the Qur’an and Islamic recitations, underscoring the magnitude of cultural change occurring in the heart of the historical capital of Brittany. The tournament’s scale and nature have sparked discussions about the shift in customs and population that Nantes is experiencing."

Northern variant on X - "Look, it's simple. The police don't go in heavy handed because they know it will provoke something larger than they have the manpower to contain, that will have lasting repercussions and make the job even more impossible than it is now. We all know how this works. Immigrants riot and then we get all the usual horseshit from "community leaders" about underinvestment, and they play it for more political control. That's why American cities are now ungovernable shitholes.   Essentially, if the police attempt to assert their authority, they will lose because they are outnumbered. We have two options. We can either manage it and contain it, or we can confront it. If we're doing the latter, then we're going to have to put the army on the streets and use armoured land rovers to patrol the cities, so that every city is policed like Belfast in the 80s. Essentially, a low grade civil war.   We won't call it that, of course, and will use a euphemism like "the troubles", but soon after follows police murders, and all the sectarian/jihadist gang crime that goes with it. Once that happens, normal life comes to an end, with cities becoming demilitarised zones because there aren't enough patrols, and out of daylight hours, cities become urban deserts and the economy collapses. Ultimately, the police are skirting around the unspoken - that short of mass deportations, there is no solution.   The answer, until fairly recently, was glacial integration, but Tory mass immigration has tipped the balance in urban areas so that there's nothing British to integrate into, and the rapid pace of immigration has sent the integration process into reverse. They completely fucked it basically. Thus, as a voter, you have two options. Either you concede that Britain has sown the seeds of its own annihilation, or you recognise that Steve Laws is right and vote accordingly. Either way, it's not pretty."

When there's a lack of will to enforce the law equally due to political ideology resulting from left wing capture

How the NYT undermined mask evidence

As with covid hysteria in general, mask fetishism is about left wing neuroses, not science:

How the NYT undermined mask evidence

"“Listen to the scientists, support masks,” Biden said at a campaign rally, four years ago, berating Trump for not wearing a mask after he had caught Covid. “Support a mask mandate nationwide,” Biden thundered to cheers and adulation. His campaign message captured a “follow the science” sentiment among Left-leaning American voters who derided anyone questioning mask effectiveness with the label “anti-mask”. This, despite a smattering of articles in Scientific American, Wired, New York Magazine and The Atlantic reporting that scientific studies found masks didn’t seem to stop viruses.

The debate over mask effectiveness took an odd turn last year when ardent mask advocate, Zeynep Tufekci, wrote a New York Times essay claiming “the science is clear that masks work”. Tufekci’s piece denigrated and belittled a scientific review by the prestigious medical nonprofit, Cochrane, for concluding that the evidence is “uncertain”.

Shortly after Tufekci published her essay, Cochrane’s editor-in-chief, Karla Soares-Weiser, dashed out a statement, to assure mask advocates that Cochrane would update the review’s language. Cochrane reviews are widely considered as the “gold standard” for high‐quality information to inform medicine, and their process is laborious, with multiple rounds of internal checks and expert peer review. Having Cochrane’s head make a personal pronouncement about a published review is unprecedented — akin to having the executive editor of The New York Times write an essay expressing personal opinions about one of the paper’s own deep-dive investigations.

The incident also marked an odd point in the timeline of mask use. Before the pandemic, few, if any, prominent organisations promoted masks to stop influenza or other respiratory viruses. As the WHO concluded in their 2019 pandemic preparedness plan: “There have been a number of high-quality randomised controlled trials (RCTs) demonstrating that personal protective measures such as hand hygiene and face masks have, at best, a small effect on influenza transmission.” So, it was not surprising that both Tufekci’s claims “masks work” and Karla Soares-Weiser’s allegations that something was wrong with the Cochrane mask review were later found themselves to have no real evidence.

Earlier this year, Soares-Weiser issued another statement, this time explaining the mask review was fine and no changes would be made. Despite the 180, damage to Cochrane’s mask review had already been done. Google sends you straight to Tufekci’s New York Times essay alleging problems in the Cochrane review.

But why did Soares-Weiser change her mind?

I have discovered, through hundreds of emails provided to me by freedom of information requests and a Cochrane whistleblower, that Tufekci bumped Soares-Weiser into making the statement against Cochrane’s own mask review — a move that landed like a grenade inside the organisation.

While Soares-Weiser runs Cochrane, scientists with expertise in each specific subject matter write and edit the reviews. When she rushed out her statement complaining about the mask review, the review authors charged that Cochrane had thrown science under the bus by working with “controversial writer” Zeynep Tufekci; meanwhile, the editor of the mask review reminded Cochrane’s leadership that changes were only being considered because of “intense media coverage and criticism”, not because there were any problems in the review’s science. “I had a very challenging meeting with the [governing board] yesterday,” Soares-Weiser wrote a few days afterwards. “I am holding on, stressed, but OK.”

But the story doesn’t end there. Because the attack by Soares-Weiser and Cochrane’s leadership on their own mask review is illustrative of how media and political pressure undermined and suppressed inconvenient scientific conclusions during the pandemic — and are still attempting to do so. The incident also raises questions about media ethics and whether Cochrane’s leadership is still fit for purpose.

When Cochrane published their 2023 mask review, it was the seventh iteration of a process that began 18 years previously. Back in 2006, Cochrane researchers raked through the scientific literature to see if they could determine what interventions could halt the spread of viruses. They found no good evidence that masks work. The scientists then updated their review in 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2020.

With all six updates, each time scouring any new peer-reviewed studies, Cochrane researchers concluded the same: there is no good scientific evidence that masks work to control viruses. And each time, the scientific community yawned. Because until the Covid pandemic, nobody had conceived of a political movement to advocate for masks. Not even Zeynep Tufekci.

“Don’t worry if you cannot find masks,” Tufekci wrote in a February 2020 article for Scientific American. “For non–health care people, washing your hands often, using alcohol-based hand-sanitiser liberally and learning not to touch your face are the most important clinically-proven interventions there are.” Promoting the article on X, Tufekci reiterated this point: “Clinical studies show hand-washing is the crucial step not masks.”

But the following month, a New York Times media reporter praised Tufekci for reversing her former opinion in a 1 March tweetstorm. This was followed by a 17 March essay for The New York Times that convinced the CDC to alter federal guidance and advise Americans to mask.

What makes this all alarming is that Tufekci is an academic sociologist, with no training in medicine or public health. And yet, she managed to alter public health policy with a bunch of tweets and an essay followed, two months later, by a co-authored scientific preprint that promoted mask mandates...

The study’s lead author is Jeremy Howard, a mask advocate and Australian software entrepreneur, who, like Tufekci, has no training in public health or medicine. The review was later published in a medical journal and remains the only article I could find that Tufekci has published in the scientific literature on masks.

Despite such a thin publishing record in the scientific literature, the Raleigh News & Observer (an influential paper among academics) anointed Tufekci a Covid media hero who had challenged the medical and public health establishment and got the facts right — but with essays, not science...

In retrospect, it’s hard to read this article — celebrating an academic for doing science by essay — and not wonder if it’s a satirical piece for The Onion: “Monkey Solves Grand Unified Theory of Physics in a Single Tweet.” Nonetheless, Tufekci played along with the gag, amazed at her magical ability to solve complex scientific problems without doing any actual science — just writing essays.

“I never thought in a million years I’d be writing something that basically said the World Health Organization and CDC and medical establishment in the United States and Europe are wrong,” she told the paper. But one tiny obstacle stood between Tufekci and full acceptance of mask mandates: Cochrane.

When Cochrane released their mask update in January 2023, which again said the efficacy of masks was uncertain, critics of pandemic policies naturally used these scientific conclusions to cast doubt on the mask advocates. “Mask mandates were a bust,” wrote New York Times columnist Brett Stephens, citing an interview by Tom Jefferson, the lead author of the Cochrane mask review. “Those skeptics who were furiously mocked as cranks and occasionally censored as ‘misinformers’ for opposing mandates were right.”

Tufekci’s rise to public prominence is tied closely to her mask advocacy. Reading this column in The New York Times, the most prominent paper in the country, and where she also worked, must have been irksome for her...

The Times published Tufekci’s “masks work” essay. Given the way American journalism works, the piece had most likely been written and edited before she had contacted Jefferson the night before for comment. Although 12 different scientists had been involved in writing and researching the Cochrane mask review, Zeynep singled out Jefferson. She named him several times in her essay for making alleged false statements about the pandemic. Hours later, Cochrane rushed out Soares-Weiser’s statement, and then apologised to the review authors. “We hoped to inform you all before publication but have been blindsided by the NYT and have scrabbled to upload our statement,” Cochrane emailed the review authors.

This did not go down well with the authors. “I will not speak for the others but am deeply distressed by this course of events which have occurred without our knowledge,” replied Jon Conly, a professor and former head of the department of medicine at the University of Calgary. He insisted that Cochrane had thrown the review authors under the bus. “Very naive to think you and the [editor in chief Soares-Weiser] spoke to the media at NYTs (without informing us) and would trust them and that they would not immediately publish what you said, especially with this woman who is well known as a controversial writer.”...

Conly confirmed to me later that Tufekci — who did not respond to repeated requests for comment — never contacted him, even though he is named as the review’s corresponding author, who Tufekci should have contacted for comment. “Not sure who Tufekci would have corresponded with to find any of the authors who would have agreed with her,” Conly said.

As I have seen from internal correspondence, Cochrane’s editors then began discussing how to manage blowback from Soares Weiser’s statement. Brown reminded them the update used the same language from 2020 and that revisions were now being suggested because Cochrane was flinching from media critics, not because the science was wrong...

The review had already undergone extensive, detailed peer review. “If the editor-in-chief and ethics officer were colluding to find criticism afterwards,” he told me, “that would appear to be unethical.”

Meanwhile, Soares-Weiser’s statement and Tufekci’s article were having a significant effect outside the organisation, spurring several news articles as well as ridicule of the mask authors on social media. Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter and author of several books on pandemics, Laurie Garret, accused the mask authors of fraud. “[T]hese bozos have undermined public faith in [masks] & biz/govt willingness to promote use,” she posted on X. (It is notable that, prior to the pandemic, Garrett posted on X in 2018 that masks don’t work for influenza and other respiratory viruses. “We have also known for 100+ years that masks do no good.”)

The argument was even reverberating through politics. Testifying in her final appearance before Congress, CDC Director, Rochelle Walensky, cited Soares-Weiser’s statement, falsely stating that Cochrane had “retracted” the mask review. Congressional staff were forced to correct her testimony: “The lack of trust in public health officials is becoming an enormous problem,” a congressional staffer later wrote.

Word of Soares-Weiser’s actions even reached the highest levels of the British government. That summer, while she was in London for a Cochrane event, an MP invited her to Parliament’s Portcullis House to explain her statement. However, according to a staffer in Parliament, Soares-Weiser dodged the invite and never appeared.

Although he was noted prominently in the “masks work” essay, Cochrane’s Michael Brown told me the Times had engaged in a lot of of “spinning” of his comments and he hadn’t been aware that Tufekci had campaigned for mask mandates, nor that she had published a review whose conclusions contradicted those of Cochrane. In her initial email to Brown, Tufekci had highlighted her ostensibly scientific background, introducing herself as both a New York Times columnist and an academic with a background in statistics and causal inference, and an interest in scientific reviews. “I use and participate in reviews myself (I’m writing one in my own field soon) and thus am familiar with many of the challenges and issues.”

This is something of an embellishment of Tufekci’s bona fides. According to Google Scholar, she has published no academic articles this year and the only one she published in all of 2023 was an opinion piece in Nature. As for the review article Tufekci had pointed to, it has never appeared.

“I’m a trusting person,” Brown told me, explaining that he had never looked up Tufekci’s history before speaking with her. “She’s definitely more of a journalist than a scientist. I didn’t agree with her, the way she then spun it: masks work.”

“The bottom line is that [our] review was well-done,” Brown said. As for the proposed changes to review’s language, Brown explained that the summary language had been written by Cochrane staff reporting to Karla Soares-Weiser, not Tom Jefferson and the other review authors...

Brown made his views on the science clear last September when he emailed the organiser of a talk he was giving that masks “do not make a major impact at the community level when promoted as a public health intervention”. He also told me that a recent scientific review in the Annals of Internal Medicine complemented the findings of Cochrane. “In the end, the conclusions were the same.”

But while Cochrane has ceased attacking its own mask review, The New York Times continues to promote the “masks work” narrative — despite evidence to the contrary. Last May, the paper ran an essay by Tulane University’s John M. Barry. In his piece, Barry wrote: “Masks present a much simpler question. They work. We’ve known they work since 1917, when they helped protect soldiers from a measles epidemic.”

And yet, we know this is not true. Even Barry does. As he wrote his bestselling tome, The Great Influenza: “The masks worn by millions were useless as designed and could not prevent influenza. Only preventing exposure to the virus could.”

But as has become clear, and as Brown confirmed in our conversation, masks are no longer about science: “Instead of just talking about the science, it became a political thing. And people fell on one side or the other,” he said. “And they said some things, and then they have to back up what they’ve said previously. And they’re just digging a hole deeper and deeper.”

What The New York Times did was to embrace a scientific opinion — masks work! — and then defend that notion like a divine ruling — ignoring contrary evidence and attacking researchers such as Tom Jefferson who have spent decades toiling away on a once-obscure topic. “This is what the future holds,” Jefferson told me. “It’s an upside-down world. It’s the death of science.”"
