The bottom line for me is that those who beat the left’s drum the loudest must be unintelligent (which I refuse to believe is the case), willfully complicit in attempts to divide and spread hatred (I’m sure there’s some of this), OR have unknowingly fallen prey to someone else’s agenda and beliefs (most likely, as I refuse to ascribe evil intention automatically to someone just because they think differently than I do).
Personally, l don’t see other alternatives.
Before I start getting (more) hate mail, let me make a couple of things clear:
I fully recognize that my post, while not technically tongue-in-cheek, contains generalizations about the viewpoints of the extreme left.
I understand not everyone on the left supports abortion, for example. For whatever weird reason, our country has decided that our political spectrum has two poles. I realize people plot themselves anywhere along this line (while some have rejected the idea of a continuum at all). So while my post is full of real inconsistencies that are have evidentiary value, they don’t all pertain to every single Democrat.
Anyway, it was absolutely not my intention to be divisive by pointing out these hypocrisies, though I recognize it could be taken that way. I’ve recently been posting about hypocritical thinking I see on the extreme right as well. I just don’t want to be blind anymore to where confirmation bias might be at play for me personally, and I believe as Americans, each one of us ought to be willing and eager to run our own beliefs through the filter of common sense and alignment with what’s actually true.
The bottom line is, the left gets it wrong a lot of the times. As is clearly evidenced by my post. But the right gets it wrong a lot of the times as well. I could, and still very well may, have written a post like this about the right. Does the left get it more wrong than the right? While I’m not interested in making this a contest, I would certainly argue that yes, they definitely do. Which is why I consider myself to be right leaning.
But at the end of the day, I become more and more convinced that the political parties, the extremes, the “sides,” the rampant hypocrisies…they are all part of the plan. To divide. To distract. To encourage us to not think for ourselves. To follow leaders with power. To hate our neighbors who think differently than we do.
And I just don’t want to be part of any of it anymore.
So while this post pointed out some glaring inconsistencies in how certain positions on the left are publicly framed, it wasn’t meant to be an academic assessment of every nuance.
If we are willing to listen to other viewpoints and challenge some of the things we’ve long believed, we may see that humans all really want the same things and have way more in common than The Powers That Be would like us to realize.
