Harry Houdini - The Great Escape Artist - "Houdini befriended famous author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who was a devoted believer in Spiritualism after having lost his son in the war. The two great men exchanged many letters, debating the truthfulness of Spiritualism. In their relationship, Houdini was the one always looking for rational answers behind the encounters and Doyle remained the devoted believer. The friendship ended after Lady Doyle held a séance in which she claimed to channel automatic-writing from Houdini’s mother. Houdini was not convinced. Among other issues with the writing was that it was all in English, a language Houdini’s mother never spoke. The friendship between Houdini and Doyle ended bitterly and led to many antagonistic attacks against each other in newspapers.   Houdini began to expose the tricks used by mediums. He gave lectures on the topic and often included demonstrations of these tricks during his own performances. He joined a committee organized by Scientific American who analyzed claims for a $2,500 prize for a true psychic phenomena (no one ever received the prize). Houdini also spoke in front of the U.S. House of Representatives, supporting a proposed bill that would ban telling fortunes for pay in Washington D.C. The result was that even though Houdini brought about some skepticism, it seemed to create more interest in Spiritualism. However, many Spiritualists were extremely upset at Houdini and Houdini received a number of death threats."

Meme - "My favourite part of Salman Rushdie's Satanic Verses is the part where Saladin Chamcha says that Indians lack the moral refinement for a true sense of tragedy and therefore cannot really understand the idea of Shame. I told my father about this, and he, being a professor in linguistics and mass communication said that it's sorta true, and that the closest word the subcontinent languages have to tragedy is "Shoka Geetha", which literally translates to 'Sad Song', with Shoka meaning sadness caused by a death of a loved one something simmilar and Geetha/Geeta/Gita/Gata being used in South Asian Literature to mean song, as nearly all of south asian knowledge was verbally passed down through songs and poetry."
"A few days earlier, he had been to see an Indian dramatization of a story by Sartre on the subject of shame. In the original, a husband suspects his wife of infidelity and sets a trap to catch her out. He pretends to leave on a business trip, but returns a few hours later to spy on her. He is kneeling to look through the keyhole of their front door. Then he feels a presence behind him, turns without rising, and there she is, looking down at him with revulsion and disgust. This tableau, he kneeling, she looking down, is the Sartrean archetype. But in the Indian version the kneeling husband felt no presence behind him; was surprised by the wife; stood to face her on equal terms; blustered and shouted; until she wept, he embraced her, and they were reconciled.
‘You say I should be ashamed,’ Chamcha said bitterly to Zeenat. ‘You, who are without shame. As a matter of fact, this may be a national characteristic. I begin to suspect that Indians lack the necessary moral refinement for a true sense of tragedy, and therefore cannot really understand the idea of shame.’"

Martin Luther King Jr monument in Boston sparks debate - "The 20-foot tall, 40-foot wide "The Embrace" statue was unveiled Friday on Boston Common, where King gave a speech on April 23, 1965, to a crowd of 22,000. The statue was inspired by a photograph of King and Scott King which captured them hugging after he won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. The art piece, designed by Brooklyn-based conceptual artist Hank Willis Thomas, only features the couple's arms during the embrace and not their heads, which has sparked criticism and mockery online. While some people defended the sculpture, others described it as hideous or disrespectful, with social media users posting memes saying it resembled a sex act. Seneca Scott, a community organizer in Oakland, California, and cousin of Scott King, told CNN the statue was insulting to his family. He previously described it as a "masturbatory metal homage" in an essay published by Compact Magazine. "If you can look at it from all angles, and it's probably two people hugging each other, it's four hands. It's not the missing heads that's the atrocity that other people clamp onto that; it's a stump that looked like a penis. That's a joke," Scott told CNN."

But the controversy has seemingly spurred demand for the shoes. Yeezy sneakers currently are among the top three sellers on Impossible Kicks, a large online reseller of high-end sneakers and clothing that has 17 store locations in the United States."

Meme - "I knew a guy who worked in a morgue, and when he was new to the job his coworkers encouraged him to prank the boss by getting on a slab in one of the drawers to jumpscare him when he pulled him out. So he strips off, lies on the slab, and the coworkers cover him up, slide the slab away and close the door. Thing is, inside the storage there are no walls between the slabs, so he's lying there in the dark with all the corpses becoming increasingly anxious. After about 5 minutes the corpse next to him says "cold in here isn't it?", and he tried to sit up so fast he nearly knocked himself out. It was his boss on the slab next to him."

The Myth of "Consensual" Sex | Know Your Meme - "The Myth of "Consensual" Sex is a LOL Jesus-style image macro based on a stock photograph of a couple lying on a bed together alongside a photoshopped cutout of Jesus with the caption asking the viewer "isn't there somebody you forgot to ask?" Due to the humorous juxtaposition of Jesus objecting to a couple's mutually consensual relationship, the image has spawned a series of photoshopped parodies depicting other social situations in which Jesus stands out as the sole opposition to an otherwise agreeable situation."

Getting to know Singapore's Chief of Army by jumping out of a plane with him - "With the lessons of COVID-19 under BG Neo’s belt, NS is therefore necessary." When you have a national religion, everything somewhow justifies it. Or maybe he means Singapore needs a ready pool of pre-paid low cost labour to deploy for whatever they want or need, which is why it needs NS - it's not really about national defence

Belgian soldiers and police 'held orgy' during Brussels lockdown - "Soldiers and police officers in Brussels held an orgy while the city was in lockdown over fears of a Paris-style attack by Islamist extremists, according to Belgian media reports.  Two female police officers and eight soldiers are said to have engaged in group sex at a police station in the Brussels neighbourhood of Ganshoren while colleagues hunted for terror suspects.  The police station was near Molenbeek, where anti-terror raids had been taking place.  Police spokesman Johan Berckmans told De Standaard that 15 to 20 soldiers slept at the station for two weeks during the operation in November so they did not have to travel far at the end of their shift.  “When they left, they organised a small party to thank the police in the area”"

Chinese bride goes viral for seating her ex-boyfriends at the same table at her wedding - "at least five men can be seen sitting at a table labelled “table for ex-boyfriends,” at which two women are also seated. Although no backstory was given regarding the women, some social media users have speculated that they could be the partners of two men at the table. The bride’s supposed ex-boyfriends do not appear to be interacting with each other in the clip. One of them can be seen filming the event with his phone, while another can be seen holding a bottle of wine. The others appear to be looking around or staring at their food.  Some Weibo users were hesitant to believe the authenticity of the clip and speculated that it could have been a joke."

Facebook - "the setting off of flares from ships at the stroke of midnight is supposedly a maritime tradition observed in many parts of the world including the Eastern Anchorage off East Coast Park for as long as I can remember.  Not anymore...  I did some quick research and realised that the firing of flares off the coast of Singapore was now... you guessed it... illegal.  I found a notice originating from the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore reposted by the Maritime and Port Authority on 28 December 2022... So, flares from ships having been fired during a ten minute window at the first few moments of every new year for the last forty years have not caused any issues to air navigation for an Aerodrome that has essentially the same incoming flight path for same amount of time but in 2021, it was decided that they are now dangerous and will be declared illegal?  And so, a longtime tradition witnessed by many but yet still unknown to some is killed. And we will never be able to make a photograph like this again in Singapore.  Happy New Year Singapore, please treasure what you have and make as many photos as you can, because you never know when it will be taken from you."

Ross Hill, Sringamani Hill & Dargah Konda- Communal Harmony in Vizag - "As a unique testament to communal harmony, and the peace-loving nature of Vizagites, there are three picturesque hillocks each with its own distinctive religious significance along the channel that leads to the inner harbor. There is The Venkateswara Temple on the ‘Sringamani Hillock’, The Ross Hill Church on the ‘Ross Hill’, and The Baba Ishq Madina Dargah on the ‘Dargah Konda’. Each of these shrines has added to the glory and history of Vizag. They are the finest examples of communal harmony and are witness to the growth of small-town into what Vizag is today. While the Dargah is about 700 years old, the temple is more than two centuries old. The Ross Hill Church too is more than a century old…emphasising the quintessence of spiritualism, that ‘all religions are but the branches of the same tree’."

Frances Emerson's answer to What did you do as a child that you hid from your parents? - Quora - "he and his brothers would go out in the back yard and throw knives at each other to practice catching them, like they’d seen in video games. (I’d seen nicks in my knives, but had assumed, with annoyance, that they’d used them bushwhacking.)  But there’s a little more to this story. After high school, he went to Alaska to work in the fisheries for the summer. When he wasn’t working, he’d go exploring in the woods. There was a couple who had broken up who also worked there. The girl had taken a shine to my son, and although my son did not reciprocate, her ex was insanely jealous.  One day, my son was out trekking in the woods and sensed someone following him. He turned around, and there was the angry boyfriend, who immediately threw a knife at him. Reacting instinctively, my son caught it.  As a mother, hearing this story elicited two responses. First, I was absolutely stunned that my boys would engage in such a dangerous activity. Secondly, I sure would have liked to have seen that fellow’s face."

NZ Police Caught That Wanted Facebook Troll - "a police appeal for information as to [Samuel Evan Lake]’s whereabouts went #viral after Lake – or someone purporting to be him – responded to their Facebook felon request in the smarmiest way possible [“I need to get a new mugshot”], to which the Police Force’s social media manager replied, “Come see us and will arrange at no cost.”  Returning serve, the supposed Lake account responded, “If only they were as good at finding me as they were with comebacks,” before changing his profile picture to a doctored version of mugshot, his face substituted for the steely, blue gaze of Derek Zoolander; his neck tattoo left intact.  In an apt twist of what I guess you’d call ‘Fate’, Christchurch Police appear to have upped both their detective and banter game overnight, posting their “thanks to everyone for their help locating Mr LAKE in Wellington tonight!” – their endeavours soon after outdone by whoever had the time and wherewithal to create a Sam Lake tribute account."
