BBC apologizes for asking Morocco soccer captain if teammates are lesbians - "British broadcaster BBC apologized Tuesday after one of its reporters asked the captain of Morocco’s Women’s World Cup team whether any of her soccer teammates are lesbians. “In Morocco, it’s illegal to have a gay relationship,” the journalist asked player Ghizlane Chebbak at a news conference Sunday. “Do you have any gay players in your squad, and what’s life like for them in Morocco?” Morocco is one of at least 67 countries where same-sex intimacy is criminalized, according to Human Rights Watch. Book bans aren’t just coming from the GOP | Opinion - "here’s one title that didn’t appear on any lists of commonly challenged books in 2022: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain. That’s because many school districts dropped Huck Finn from their reading lists years ago. And the people demanding its removal were on the left, not the right. That’s not something that my fellow liberals like to acknowledge these days. We’re outraged by the latest burst of censorship in American schools, which reflects a profound lack of faith in our teachers as well as our students. But so does the purge of Huck Finn. And liberals can’t rebut book bans if they are banning books themselves. Consider a 2019 resolution in the New Jersey Legislature to remove Huck Finn from school curricula, introduced by two Democratic lawmakers. “I think this is a racist book,” declared one of the sponsors, Verlina Reynolds-Jackson, a Democrat from Mercer County, citing the novel’s frequent use of the N-word. “To use this book in this climate is not doing the African American community any justice at all.” Never mind that Twain wrote Huck Finn to critique slavery and racism, or that some leading Black authors — including Toni Morrison — have defended the book. It “can cause students to feel upset, marginalized, or humiliated and can create an uncomfortable atmosphere in the classroom,” the New Jersey resolution states. Sound familiar? Although the bill never became law in New Jersey, it reflects the voice of the school censor in all times and places: A book is going to harm young people, so it has to go... All good literature can upset us, because it addresses the full breadth of the human experience. That includes our worst traits — violence, bigotry, and racism — as well as our best ones: courage, dignity, and altruism. But censors don’t trust our teachers to address those themes in sensitive and age-appropriate ways. As Rep. Reynolds-Jackson acknowledged, some New Jersey teachers told her that they wanted to retain Huck Finn. “You have to make sure you have a strong instructor to lead that conversation,” she said. Translation: She doesn’t believe our instructors are strong enough to do that. Why would she want to ban the book, otherwise? And we certainly don’t trust our young people to make sense of it, either. That’s why the staunchly liberal school board of Burbank, Calif., removed Huck Finn — along with Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, another classic American novel that the left loves to hate. It uses the N-word, too, and it also allegedly promotes a “white-savior” mentality. Not according to Sungjoo Yoon, a student at Burbank High School. Writing in the New York Times, he noted that Atticus Finch’s defense of Black client Tom Robinson in To Kill a Mockingbird taught him “the danger of complacency,” while the bond between Huck and Jim in Huck Finn demonstrated that “love transcends any and all differences.” You don’t have to agree with him, of course. But if you want to ban these novels, you’re going to have to tell me why they’re more dangerous than Gender Queer, Beloved, and all of the other books that Republicans are attempting to remove. A Teachers Union Has Odd Taste in Books - WSJ - "America’s largest teachers union, the National Education Association, issued its “2023 Summer Reading List” last month. Among its recommendations are “Gender Queer,” a graphic-novel memoir about “identifying outside the gender binary.” The book has been removed from many school libraries in Florida, where I live, but I checked it out at the public library. I was shocked that a book marketed to young adults (12-18) has so much graphic content. Here’s a sexting dialogue from page 170: “I got a new strap-on harness today. I can’t wait to put it on you. I can’t wait to have your c— in my mouth—I’m going to give you the b— of your life. Then I want you inside me.” On the facing page, color sketches graphically depict this scene. I posted that quote, with slightly less family-friendly redactions, in the comment section below the NEA reading list, alongside several other comments from other readers. Within an hour, all the comments were deleted and the comment section on the post was closed. The book is listed under the heading “Banned Books: Celebrate the Freedom to Read!” But the NEA doesn’t want people actually to read it. A day after closing the comment section, the NEA deleted one of its original recommendations—“Milo and Marcos at the End of the World” by Kevin Christopher Snipes. Publisher’s Weekly calls that book an “emotional navigation of faith and queerness” about a boy named Milo who “becomes convinced God is punishing him for being gay.” A “super-religious, super-shy nerd” with “adamantly Republican Presbyterian” parents, Milo falls in love with a Cuban boy named Marcos and believes the world will end if he pursues this romance after a series of natural disasters occur during their courtship. There are no classics on the list, but there are other edgy recommendations, including “Ready Player One,” which has explicit descriptions of blow-up sex dolls, online brothels and masturbation. The union also recommends a pair of books by ideologues who argue that America is systemically racist: “White Fragility” by Robin DiAngelo and “Uncomfortable Conversations with a Black Man” by Emmanuel Acho. These are listed under “Books to Celebrate or Understand Juneteenth.” Why not a history book about slavery or the Civil War? Mr. Acho, a former professional football player and son of Nigerian immigrants, writes that “we will never achieve a post racial America as long as the gears of systemic racism continue to churn.” He lectures white people: “You’ve likely spent your whole life enjoying the fruits of systemic racism and never having to directly engage with its fallout.” Ms. DiAngelo sings a similar tune: “A racism-free upbringing is not possible, because racism is a social system embedded in the culture and its institutions. We are born into this system and have no say in whether we will be affected by it.” In light of recent parent revolts against ideological indoctrination in schools, you’d think the unions would be at pains to reassure the public that they’re nonpartisan. Instead, they’re doubling down on politics. Then again, at some point the NEA added a disclaimer to its list: “The books here are not recommended for students.” On that we can all agree."

As an unhappy recipient of the neaToday physical magazine, owing to my wife’s work, I see that June’s cover depicts an individual built like a brick smokehouse with a raised nose; her sneer seems calibrated to within .01 microfarads of perfectly disdainful capacitance. Alongside, read the words “We Will Not Erase History,” and an obvious shot at Florida and Texas, states that wisely demurred from teaching the Howard Zinn and Nikole Hannah-Jones histories. Conservatives are correct to push sexually explicit books and bunk history from schools. Even better, we stop there and say, “It’s inappropriate in this space, but feel free to publish and purchase it on your own.” For that, the Right is accused of “book banning.” Hush. Weeds in my neighbor’s yard are no problem, but the second they cross into a shared space or my yard, I have the right to remove the lawn canker. The Right isn’t preventing the publication, lobbying against their sale, or revising them into alphabet soup. All we ask is that you keep your trash books to yourselves. That conservatives, Hays Code–enjoyers that we were, must act more like liberals than the self-described liberals is unacceptable."

Parents’ anger at ‘divisive’ primary school science homework that ‘excludes white men’ - "A North London primary school that offered non-white students extra lessons urged its pupils to “challenge the myth” that scientists are “old men… with crazy white hair,” GB News can reveal. Science homework given at Coldfall Primary School in Muswell Hill called on pupils to look for scientists from “outside of Europe and America.” The homework recommends a list of scientists worth considering, which does not feature any white men. The pledge starts with the motto “Intent does not supersede impact.” Among other commitments, the pledge asks children to be “actively anti-racist.” The pledge was developed by the school’s Inclusion and Anti-Racism Group (IARG).
