Repealing bad laws is better than exempting favoured companies - "C-5 is thus a classic case of governments picking winners and losers rather than creating the conditions that will allow the best proposals to succeed, as determined by the markets.  Making matters worse, if the bill passes, Parliament won’t even get an opportunity to sign off on the specific projects, raising the risk that they’ll be carefully selected for maximum political gain for the Liberal Party of Canada.  A better solution would be to simply repeal the laws, or parts thereof, that have prevented the private sector from pursuing these projects in the first place, starting with the unconstitutional Impact Assessment Act (IAA).  The IAA was passed in 2018, replacing the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, which was focused on the federal government’s environmental responsibilities.  The IAA is a stunning federal overreach that purportedly gives Ottawa the power to freeze any large project until the government has assessed its “impact” and the environment minister has decided whether it’s in the “public interest” to green-light. The assessment is based on a list of 20 subjective factors, including “Indigenous knowledge,” whether the project “contributes to sustainability” and “the intersection of sex and gender with other identity factors.”  The result is that every major project gets mired in years of expensive studies and negotiations, without any ability for investors to predict whether a project will get built.  In its first several years, a single major project — the Haisla Nation-led Cedar LNG facility in Kitimat, B.C. — actually made its way through the marathon federal decision-making phase and ended up declared “in the public interest.” Germany, meanwhile, has managed to not only approve, but build LNG facilities in a couple of years. In 2023, in a case brought by the Government of Alberta, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled that the IAA was partially unconstitutional, since it allowed the federal government to control projects that mostly fall under provincial jurisdiction...  Ironically, Ottawa has the constitutional power to control projects that cross provincial borders, such as pipelines, but Prime Minister Mark Carney recently insinuated that provinces can veto those.  Although the Trudeau government passed minor tweaks to the IAA, the Liberals have decided to mostly ignore the Supreme Court’s ruling, prompting Alberta to threaten another challenge last fall...  Doing so would give investors more certainty that their projects will get built as long as they’re economically viable, and they wouldn’t need to worry about successfully lobbying Liberal ministers to get on a special list. That would respect the Constitution and give our economy the boost it so badly needs."

Carney says to expect both an austerity and investment-focused budget, criticizes Trudeau-era spending - The Globe and Mail - "“It’s an austerity and investment budget at the same time. And that is possible if we’re disciplined,” he said in French, responding to a question on whether the government’s spending review means it’s planning an austerity budget.  “The rate of federal government spending over the last decade is more than seven per cent year over year. It’s faster than the rate of growth of our economy,” he added.  The Prime Minister said that style of fiscal management at the federal level needs to stop. Mr. Carney‘s comments stand in sharp contrast with the former Liberal government’s approach to fiscal policy. Former prime minister Justin Trudeau won the 2015 election on an anti-austerity platform and largely brushed off calls to rein in spending, resulting in a sharp increase in the size of the federal government... Asked if there were any areas of government that would not be touched by cuts, Mr. Carney said on Wednesday that health care spending, education transfers and transfers to individuals would not be affected. "
So much for left wingers claiming all the deficits were justified. But given the left wing definition of "investment"...

No oil pipeline on the list of projects of national interest - ""There is no [oil] pipeline project on the table," one of them said, despite the federal government's promise to make Canada an "energy superpower."... Smith sent a letter to Carney in which she issued an unequivocal warning. "The absence of a pipeline on the initial list will perpetuate the current investment uncertainty and send a sobering signal to Albertans concerned about Ottawa's commitment to national unity," she wrote... The absence of a pipeline project in the first wave of announcements could reassure the Liberal Party's progressive wing, which would like Carney to put more emphasis on climate issues. On Friday, Radio-Canada revealed that some Liberal MPs plan to form an environmental caucus. The initiative aims to create a forum for discussion around climate issues among Liberal MPs... Trans Mountain is the last oil pipeline project to be completed in Canada. Justin Trudeau's government acquired it from Kinder Morgan in 2018, after the company suspended work due to political uncertainty and opposition from the government of British Columbia. Acquired for $4.7 billion, the pipeline's expansion costs have exploded. According to data compiled by the Parliamentary Budget Officer in 2024, Ottawa spent more than $34 billion to complete the project, compared to the initial estimate of $21 billion."
Maybe Canada will be a superpower in government subsidies for "clean" energy

Everything (except Mark Carney’s approval rating) is getting worse - "What’s less clear is precisely what voters think Carney is doing well. That same Abacus Data survey found that just 36 per cent of Canadians think the country is headed in the right direction. Not only has Carney made little to no material progress on any of his core campaign promises, but many of Canada’s economic fundamentals have been getting worse... One of Carney’s last actions in the private sector before entering politics was to champion his company, Brookfield Asset Management, moving their head office from Toronto to New York. The move was seen as a bid to shield Brookfield from a wave of protectionist economic measures promised by the incoming administration of U.S. President Donald Trump. Plenty of other investors — both Canadian and non-Canadian — have been taking a similar tack. Statistics Canada’s most recent figures on securities transactions show that Canada is in the midst of full-blown capital flight. In just the first four months of 2025, $84 billion in capital left the country. That’s the equivalent of $30 million leaving the country every single hour. Raw Canadian tax rates have actually gone down since Carney took power. He ended the consumer carbon tax and pushed through a promised “middle class tax cut” in the first session of Parliament. So it’s all the more notable that the percentage of GDP being collected as tax is hitting 20-year highs. The first quarter of 2025 thus yielded yet another record gap between U.S. and Canadian productivity. The average American is now 18 per cent more productive than they were in 2015. The average Canadian managed just two per cent... consumer insolvencies hit 11,464 in June. That’s higher than any point since 2010, when the last cohort of victims from the 2008 Great Recession were finally throwing in the towel. More concerning is that the most severe type of insolvency — bankruptcy — is growing at an outsized rate. This is where we should mention that Canadian household debt is one of the highest in the developed world, with total consumer debt in Canada hitting a historic high of $2.5 trillion in February... It’s been widely reported that youth unemployment is hitting highs not seen in a generation. But Canada’s overall employment rate is also getting steadily worse. The share of Canadians 15 years or older who have a job is now down to just 60.9 per cent. When omitting the temporary job losses caused by COVID lockdowns, that’s the lowest sustained employment rate Canada has seen since the 1990s. With job losses occurring way faster in the private sector than in the public sector, the share of government jobs in the Canadian economy has now hit a high of 21.7 per cent. In other words, there is now a civil servant for every four Canadians employed in the private sector. There are now more bureaucrats in the job market than at any point since the early 1990s, just before a sovereign debt crisis compelled a rapid reduction in the size of the Canadian government... given the share of the Canadian economy devoted to export industries, it’s of some concern that the Canadian trade deficit is hitting lows never seen before. According to recent Statistics Canada figures, April and June both posted the largest Canadian trade deficits on record, at $7.6 billion and $5.9 billion, respectively. This would be fine if the deficits were being driven by increased Canadian imports, but they’re happening mostly because of collapsing Canadian exports. This is being driven largely by U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods... Housing construction is poised to fall dramatically in the coming years, exacerbating the housing shortage at the core of the Canadian affordability crisis."

Of course globally focused Carney hasn't opened his constituency office - "Mark Carney has been Canada’s Prime Minister for slightly over 100 days. Yet, he still hasn’t done the one thing his predecessors did in short order: open a constituency office... An Aug. 12 column in the Ottawa Citizen focused on a local constituent, John Van de Brook, and his concerns about a rat infestation occurring in Barrhaven. He had apparently already reached out to his municipal councillor, and decided to contact Carney to ensure that all bases were covered. According to Bruce Deachman, “it wasn’t so many months ago that his then-MP, Chandra Arya, helped solve a problem that Van de Brook’s wife was having with her permanent resident card. Who knows, he figured, maybe Carney could help with this?” When Van de Brook tried to look up Carney’s constituency office, he discovered that it didn’t exist. “I was disappointed,” he told Deachman, “he should have one.” Two other local residents, Elaine and Lyndsay, also expressed their disappointment that Carney had no local presence in Nepean. “You might see something on Facebook telling you to contact your MP,” the latter said in part. “When I see that, my first thought is that, technically, we have an MP, but we have nowhere to contact an MP. And, because of the role of our MP, it doesn’t feel like there’s someone representing our riding.” Is this a party-based issue or delay? Doesn’t seem like it. Two newly-elected Liberal MPs in the area, Giovanna Mingarelli and Bruce Fanjoy, reportedly have their constituency offices up and running. Deachman contacted the PMO about this matter. While he recognized that Carney is “the prime minister and has more important things to worry about,” he also correctly pointed out “constituency offices aren’t simply a quaint tradition or something going out of style.” What did the PMO reportedly tell him? “We’ll have more to share on that shortly. Be in touch.”... There’s no excuse for Carney not to have a constituency office in Nepean after 100 days as PM. It makes him look like an out-of-touch elite who can’t be bothered to speak to the common people and has no interest in their day-to-day issues, concerns and problems. Which has been an often-cited criticism of this prime minister since his first day on the job"

And despite their, I would say, tepid though overt overtures to the former group, it was the latter that brought them to power.  The evidence of the power of the left bloc within the Liberals is all over Carney's governance. If there's a problem, big government is the automatic answer.  Not enough houses? - Fire up the money cannon to build experimental government housing!  It doesn't matter that Alberta has already clearly shown the effectiveness of the deregulation approach.  Not enough major projects? - Fire up the opaque cabinet winner-picking!  It doesn't matter that the root of Canada's crisis is its lack of competitiveness.  All of this still comes along with the Trudeau cabinet, all the DEI initiatives, muzzled businesses, a bought and paid for media and a whole whack of other stuff.  If you're a self described "business person" you're probably not really moved by a shift from a post-modern to more Soviet style left."

When people talk about 'English culture', they often think of cricket, tea, or fish & chips 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

But culture isn't about what people eat and wear. It's about norms, habits, and systems of social organisation.

A 🧵 on the systems and norms which make England genuinely unique  

 

National cultures aren't just defined by material culture - for example, what people eat and wear.

Those factors are mutable, and liable to change over time.

Nations are best identified by the habits, assumptions, and methods of social organisation.  

 

In this sense, the English are genuinely unique - even when compared to other European countries.

Our methods of social organisation, approaches to family, attitudes to law, and philosophical norms are distinctive, with deep historical roots.

So what makes the English unique?  

 

Let's start with family.

For centuries, the English have preferred nuclear families, with a low-level of obligation to extended family.

Emmanuel Todd's model of family systems identifies the English as nearly unique in their adherence to the 'absolute nuclear' family structure.  

 

What does this mean?

Two parents, with their children, living on their own land, with few obligations to their extended kin.

Historians Alan Macfarlane and Peter Laslett argue that this has been the primary mode of family arrangement in England since at least the 13th century.  

 

Laslett's argument is based on his analysis of records that stretch back to the medieval period.

In studying a 17th century Rector's Book from the Nottinghamshire village of Clayworth. Over a 12-year period, Laslett found little evidence of co-habiting extended families.  

 

Even today, when high prices prevent many young people from getting onto the housing ladder, England has a lower-than-average level of intergenerational living.

Compared to our European counterparts, the English are far more likely to leave the family home as young adults.  

 

England is also one of the strongest example of the Western European marriage pattern, a social system marked by comparatively late marriage, especially for women, and a generally small age difference between spouses.

Marriage at a very young age is not the norm in England.  

 

From 1619 to 1660, 1,000 marriage certificates issued by the Archdiocese of Canterbury show that only 34 brides were younger than 19 years old.

The average age of marriage for women was 24, while it was 28 for men. The youngest brides were all aristocratic.  

 

And unlike elsewhere in Europe, cousin marriage was never the norm.

In fact, it was banned in England until 1540 - and was only legalised in order to enable a royal cousin marriage.

George Darwin estimated that just 3.5% of middle class marriages were cousin marriages in 1875.  

 

And finally, non-nobles in England have long since had a greater degree of choice over who they marry than their European counterparts.

These relatively shallow kinship networks encouraged another long-standing feature of English social life - economic mobility.

For centuries, people in England have moved to where the jobs are. They have been far less rooted to the land than their European counterparts.  

 

Back to Laslett's Clayworth analysis once again - Laslett found that 61 per cent of Clayworth's residents moved away from the village, from 1676 to 1688.

London, meanwhile grew from 50,000 people at the end of the 15th century to around 200,000 by 1603.  

 

The vast majority of this migration was internal - almost all of these new residents were from other parts of the British Isles, particularly England.

By and large, they moved to London in search of improved prospects - a mobility enabled by loose kinship structures.  

 

According to sociologist Brigitte Berger:

"The young nuclear family had to be flexible and mobile as it searched for opportunity and property. Forced to rely on their own ingenuity, its members also needed to plan for the future and develop bourgeois habits of work and saving."  

 

But despite this remarkable internal flexibility, England saw relatively small numbers of migrants from outside of the British Isles.

Insulated from Europe by the English Channel, population movements were limited post-1066, save for some 50,000 Huguenots in the 16th century.  

 

Given that the maturity of a nuclear family was often demonstrated through property ownership, the English have generally provided strong protections for property owners.

As far back as the Anglo-Saxons, the English have distinguished between common land and private land.  

 

The importance of land to the Anglo-Saxons led to principles such as the transfer of land by enrolment - in other words, if land changed hands, that transfer had to be formally recorded.

And the roots of today's English property law developed during the early Norman period.  

 

The individuated responsibility of nuclear families, and the ownership of property, birthed another of England's social norms - a relatively high level of individual responsibility and freedom.

Slavery was forbidden in England from 1066, and slave trading banned in 1102.  

 

There has been no legally sanctioned torture in England since 1640 - Austria banned torture in 1776; France would ban torture in 1798.

Many of the liberties that took root in Europe during the Enlightenment were already the norm in England before 1700.  

 

However, liberty did not mean anarchy.

The English state has long been more centralised than its European counterparts. Since, at the latest, the time of Henry II (1154-1189), a uniformly applied system of royal justice has been the norm.

Few laws, applied consistently.  

 

And finally, the English have had a strong commercial instinct for centuries.

The English wool trade was the backbone of the English economy between 1250 and 1350, centuries before the commercial boom of the 16th and 17th centuries. Textile guilds emerged by the 12th century.

Unsurprisingly then, it was England - alongside the Netherlands - which embraced trade and commerce most enthusiastically in the 17th and 18th centuries.

Indeed, England has not been self-sufficient in food production since the 1750s.  

 

This is by no means an exhaustive list of England's distinctive norms.

However, these examples demonstrate that England has a complex and unique system of social arrangement, shaped by its history, geography, and culture.

This system is worth understanding - and celebrating.  

 

A failure to understand these norms has been the cause of many of the problems that we have faced over the last 50 years.

In many respects - homeownership, law & order, migration -, we have failed to make the system work on its own terms.

Failed Afghan asylum seeker 'stabbed to death female store manager who gave him a job' after his deportation from Germany was deemed 'unsafe' - "Sayed Akbar S. is alleged to have stabbed Magda M. 26 times with an eight-centimetre blade in what German media described as a 'frenzy' on May 7 2025 at a 'New Yorker' clothing store in Krefeld, North Rhine-Westphalia.   Polish-born Magda, 41, tragically died at the scene, and Sayed, 26, was found a short distance away with blood-stained hands.  At his trial, it was revealed that his asylum application to stay in Germany had been rejected.   But instead of being sent back to Afghanistan, German authorities ruled it would be too dangerous to send him back and granted him a deportation ban.   He was also revealed to suffer from paranoid schizophrenia, with a prosecutor telling the court: 'He acted in a state of diminished responsibility'... It comes weeks after an Afghan man deemed psychologically ill faced a German court over a deadly knife attack on a group of toddlers that his defence lawyer labelled the 'deed of a madman'... The suspect, who was arrested near the scene of the stabbing, has been only partially named as Enamullah O., in line with usual practice by the German judiciary."

Germany Deports Syrian Family Accused of 160 Crimes - "German authorities have deported a Syrian family of 20 members residing in the city of Stuttgart to Syria, following dozens of criminal complaints and charges filed against them.  According to the German Press Agency (DPA) on Monday, October 20, 2025, the deportation came after pressure from local authorities.  The so-called “Dangerous Foreigners Task Force” coordinated what officials described as a “monitored and organized departure.” The Baden-Nuremberg Ministry of Justice stated that 13 family members left over the weekend, while four others had been deported earlier in the summer, bringing the total to 17, with three members still serving prison sentences... The report added that the family, originally from Aleppo, arrived in Germany between 2015 and 2020 and had been granted refugee or subsidiary protection status. They were accused of committing at least 160 crimes, including assaulting police officers, attempted murder, and theft."

Polygamy, suicide, and murder: 31-year-old pregnant French woman beaten to death in front of her children by her Senegalese husband and his second wife - "A Senegalese man and his “second” wife are on trial in Orléans for the murder of the “first” wife, a 31-year-old French woman, a case highlighting themes of polygamy, religious control, and domestic violence.  The victim, Clothilde Ba, died in August 2022 from blows to the face and head, dying a few hours later after the assault at Montargis urban hospital. She was pregnant, and her unborn baby girl also could not be saved. The two co-accused, Sileye Ba, 38, Clothilde’s ex-husband, and Dieynaba Kande, 34, his “second” wife, each face life imprisonment and are blaming each other for the fatal blows...   The tragic story began with a love affair. Clothilde, an atheist communications student, met Sileye, a cameraman, during an internship in Dakar in 2015. They secretly married, but when they returned to France, Clothilde’s father, Didier Ghiti, noticed a change in his daughter.  “When she returned from Senegal with the man who became her husband, we lived under the same roof, and I realized she was no longer the Clothilde I knew,” he said.  The Senegalese migrant, Sileye Ba, is a member of the Baye Fall movement, a branch of Islam that practices strict gender roles.  According to the young woman’s father, “Clothilde was searching for spirituality, and this man probably provided her with some answers. The influence began like that.”   As neither his daughter nor the new husband worked, Didier Ghiti supported them financially until he found the living situation “unbearable” and “ended up kicking them out.”  The couple, who by then had one child, found refuge in a shelter before securing an apartment in Montargis. In 2018, Sileye’s “second” wife, Dieynaba, joined them under the guise of being a cousin on an au pair contract. This created a “strange ménage à trois” that lasted for four years.   Neighbors observed Dieynaba monitoring Clothilde’s every move, who now appeared veiled and had cut off contact with her family and friends. Clothilde gave birth to a second and third child in 2019 and 2020.   The household’s financial stability relied on social assistance and the support of Clothilde’s mother, Sylvie Ghiti, who moved in with them after leaving her husband. Sylvie, who suffered from schizophrenia, converted to Islam and became increasingly devoted to Sileye, whom she called “baba” or “my guide.”   Her ex-husband, Didier, reported Sileye for abuse. Sylvie’s devotion soon turned to disillusionment as she “helplessly witnessed scenes of psychological and physical violence against her daughter.”  She documented this in messages on her phone. To maintain control, Sileye accused Clothilde of having affairs, using it as a justification to install surveillance cameras in the home.   The extreme coercive control led Sylvie to leave in late 2021. She lived in her car for months, cut off from her daughter and grandchildren. In May 2022, she committed suicide. A few days before her death, she wrote to her son-in-law, “Your God has destroyed me and you too.”  That same spring, social services received warnings about the living conditions and potential violence in the home. An assessment was launched, but Clothilde “kept smiling, found answers to everything, and avoided further appointments.”  She fabricated an assault to explain a black eye and never incriminated her husband or Dieynaba.   However, an autopsy revealed multiple injuries and bruises all over Clothilde’s body, including her genitals"

They caught me in the store and asked me to leave or go to the service desk and get a membership. Instead of leaving I demanded free products and food and waved a Sam’s club flag in the middle of their store to show them just how much I love Costco and want to stay. When they still asked me to leave I began stealing whatever I could and threw frozen hamburger patties at security. They should have just let me shop there without a membership, I’m special! I just don’t understand because although I’m a valid Sam’s Club member I was told I could come to Costco for the opportunity to try their amazing hotdogs for only $1.50, and when I got here some people were handing them out for free! Now suddenly no more free hotdogs and I’m asked to return to Sam’s? I need to continue to receive free hotdogs even if it means other valid Costco members will have to contribute a 0.20 cent fee at the door but I DESERVE THIS! Now they are bringing people in from the business office to escort us non-members out to the parking lot!!! Can you believe it? Why would they feel the need? It must be Costcos CEO. I know some of my Sam’s club people have really damaged Costco, and even hurt other customers but this is WRONG! The previous CEO let so many of us Sam’s club members in, they didn’t even check our membership at the Costco doors. They even gave us Costco gift cards to use. Lots of us were in trouble at Sam’s for some pretty horrendous crimes but costcos old CEO didn’t care. This new CEO asking us to leave and now calling in the business office is INCITING my rioting throughout the store, he clearly wants me to go crazy, right? I’m entitled to be here in Costco without a membership, even though some other people waited in line years for their membership I am better than them and more deserving. I’m rallying my fellow Sam’s club members to light fires in all costcos in a certain radius to show them just how much we LOVE Costco!!! I’ve managed to convince some valid Costco members that I am definitely special and deserving of free Costco membership (of course to be paid for by valid members). Costco should get rid of all memberships actually, even though every other big box store has them, Sam’s can keep their walls and membership cards but Costco should transition to an outdoor flea market type of venue. It’s not fair that just members be entitled to $5 rotisserie chickens. Us Sam’s club members are like really mad at the Costco business office people the CEO sent in. Even though the business office people took an oath to defend Costco policies from all enemies, regardless of their membership to Costco or Sam’s. Policy schmolicy! Can I please remind current valid Costco members that it is fascist to love Costco. You must learn to coexist with other chains entering your store whenever they please. Do not show any Costco pride, this is harmful to Sam’s club members and hurts their feelings. Guys calm down, I’ll only burn down one or two Costcos, peacefully. Then they’ll know that, I, a Sam’s club member, truly have a place here at Costco. Some cashiers may get hurt but it’s a price I’m willing to pay (not actually pay, I like things for free). Some Costco employee in Minnesota recently admitted to actually being a Sam’s member, quite the scandal! Even though she’s been voting on the board of directors!! See, we Sam’s goers have infiltrated and influenced Costco at almost every level, if only that darn CEO and CFO weren’t out to get us, why should only Costco members get a say on what products they carry! The audacity!! Some Costco members are saying this is what they voted for when they brought back their old CEO! I can’t believe they’d kick all of us Sam’s club members out! Sure, their prices have sky rocketed and we expected at least a vanilla ice cream cup for free a day. That’s it, I’m putting Sam’s banners up over all the Costco signs, that will convince you Costco freaks won’t it!
