Rex Murphy: Canadians have been patient during the pandemic. That's not necessarily a good thing - "We were patient, too, with the obvious contradictions that governed aspects of lockdown. People could gather in superstores, but not in churches. My favourite came last summer when a friend observed you could go to a protest but not get a haircut. Even celebrated politicians showed up at protests at a time when they maintained it was not safe to go to Parliament. Now there is patience, and there is heroic patience. Heroic patience belongs to every worker, owner and some customers of small- and medium-sized businesses. I expect that in a more volatile country the ruination of so many privately built small enterprises, maintained over years of labour, would lead to something close to rebellion. Not here. This is Canada... Surely we should, at least by this point, be asking rather angrily — do you guys have ANY plan for when this ends, for it CANNOT continue. Do you have an end date? When is it? Do you actually know what you are doing? Or are we all, the whole Canadian nation, on some playground slide that has no terminal. Is it all drop until you stop? Do you think these daily prayer sessions — because that’s really all they are — where the PM or premier or health adviser comes out to read numbers no one is listening to anymore, stand for leadership? Do the people ill-managing the crisis, and for the most part spared from its injuries, spared the loss of income or business, actually understand the pain of those not so well situated? Do you leaders know what’s going on in your own country or your own province? At this stage I think the only point of this crisis seems to be to maintain the crisis. It certainly liberates governments. Yet it cannot continue. There is always a fulcrum point. Is the response worse than the stimulus, the cure than the disease? True north strong and free? Not lately it isn’t."

What Everyone’s Getting Wrong About the Toilet Paper Shortage - "the toilet paper industry is split into two, largely separate markets: commercial and consumer. The pandemic has shifted the lion’s share of demand to the latter. People actually do need to buy significantly more toilet paper during the pandemic — not because they’re making more trips to the bathroom, but because they’re making more of them at home. With some 75% of the U.S. population under stay-at-home orders, Americans are no longer using the restrooms at their workplace, in schools, at restaurants, at hotels, or in airports. Georgia-Pacific, a leading toilet paper manufacturer based in Atlanta, estimates that the average household will use 40% more toilet paper than usual if all of its members are staying home around the clock... the toilet paper made for the commercial market is a fundamentally different product from the toilet paper you buy in the store. It comes in huge rolls, too big to fit on most home dispensers. The paper itself is thinner and more utilitarian. It comes individually wrapped and is shipped on huge pallets, rather than in brightly branded packs of six or 12.  “Not only is it not the same product, but it often doesn’t come from the same mills,” added Jim Luke, a professor of economics at Lansing Community College, who once worked as head of planning for a wholesale paper distributor. “So for instance, Procter & Gamble [which owns Charmin] is huge in the retail consumer market. But it doesn’t play in the institutional market at all.”... In theory, some of the mills that make commercial toilet paper could try to redirect some of that supply to the consumer market. People desperate for toilet paper probably wouldn’t turn up their noses at it. But the industry can’t just flip a switch. Why do you think China hasn’t yet produced an mRNA vaccine? Hint: it isn’t fear about violating IP. Moreover, even Moderna and Pfizer don’t yet fully understand their production technology, they are learning by doing every single day. Moderna has said that they won’t enforce their patents during the pandemic but no one has stepped up to produce because no one else can."

The Science Table says it's going away, sadly, that's not quite true | Toronto Sun - "The Ontario Science Table gets everything wrong, including whether they are going away... Like their failed COVID projections, the Science Table is wrong on pronouncing their own demise. The Ford government says it’s not going away... there is no reason to keep this group around in any form. The Science Table was a self-appointed and self-important group that inserted itself into Ontario’s policy making early in the pandemic by putting forward modelling and projections on COVID. Back in April, the Science Table issued a report predicting that hospitalizations would be between 2,500 under the best case scenario and 4,000 under the worst. Yet when that time came it was 1,676 people in Ontario hospitals testing positive for COVID-19 and just 703 of them were admitted due to COVID, the others were in hospital for other reasons and tested positive once admitted.  That same report predicted that ICUs would be overrun by the start of May with between 375 and 600 admitted, instead we had 157 people testing positive in ICUs and only 102 of them were admitted for COVID. That wasn’t the only report that got it wrong, listing their projections they were right on would be a much shorter list. When the province began reopening on Jan. 31 after the last lockdown, the Science Table predicted disaster...   The wise men and women at the Science Table stated clearly in 2021 that there was no evidence to back vaccine passports...   As soon as vaccine passports were politically popular in certain circles, the Science Table changed their collectivist minds and pressured the government to implement a vaccine passport system.  Their now former scientific director, Peter Juni, got himself in hot water when he told restaurant workers worried about losing their income again just before Christmas due to a lockdown he was advocating for to “stop moaning.” His later comments about a tidal wave of COVID didn’t come true but it did have the effect of scaring patrons from returning to restaurants and hurting long-struggling businesses.   Most of the media in Ontario simply focused on the fear generating predictions but rarely how wrong they were"

Jacob Shelley, a law professor, blasted Moore as negligent and responsible for coming deaths.  “Dr. Moore is responsible for the preventable deaths & disease that follows from his negligence,” Shelley wrote.  “He shouldn’t be a CMOH. Any public health org/body, scholar, advocate or dr that doesn’t call out this has likewise abandoned public health.” Now, I’m not going to say no one should question Dr. Moore’s decisions, I question doctors all the time, but I can tell you from experience that when I question a doctor about overly zealous COVID restrictions on Twitter, it’s called an attack on science. I’m quickly reminded, by people like Macfarlane, Shelley or their fellow travellers, that I’m not a medical doctor.  Seems that attacking doctors or science is just fine if the doctor being attacked is relaxing rather than increasing COVID restrictions...   Of course, there are plenty of medical experts who believe that Ontario is on the right path under Moore, their voices aren’t yelling and screaming on Twitter though. Nor are they amplified quite as often in the media as those wanting ever increasing restrictions even when the evidence doesn’t support more or ongoing restrictions"

How Deadly Is Covid? A Major Study Defies Conventional Wisdom - "COVID-19 is much less deadly in the non-elderly population than previously thought, a major new study of antibody prevalence surveys has concluded.  The study was led by Dr. John Ioannidis, Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology at Stanford University, who famously sounded an early warning on March 17th, 2020 with a widely-read article in Stat News, presciently arguing that “we are making decisions without reliable data” and “with lockdowns of months, if not years, life largely stops, short-term and long-term consequences are entirely unknown, and billions, not just millions, of lives may be eventually at stake.”  In the new study, which is currently undergoing peer review, Prof. Ioannidis and colleagues found that across 31 national seroprevalence studies in the pre-vaccination era, the average (median) infection fatality rate of COVID-19 was estimated to be just 0.035% for people aged 0-59 years people and 0.095% for those aged 0-69 years... Why are countries seeing differing IFRs even for the same age groups? The authors suggest a number of explanations, including data artefacts (e.g. if the number of deaths or seroprevalence are not accurately measured), presence and severity of comorbidities (for example, obesity affects 42% of the US population, but the proportion of obese adults is only 2% in Vietnam, 4% in India and under 10% in most African countries, though it affects almost 40% of South African women), the presence of frail individuals in nursing homes and differences in management, health care, overall societal support and levels of drug problems."
So the IFR is not just under 1%, but under 0.1%

California Misinformation Legislation for COVID and CDC Doctors - "A California bill, AB 2098 (Low), appears to be moving towards passage in the next two weeks.  The bill would make the spreading of misinformation, as defined, or disinformation related to COVID-19, including false or misleading information regarding the nature and risks of the virus, its prevention and treatment; and the development, safety, and effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines, by a physician and surgeon unprofessional conduct.

I find the bill's definition of "misinformation" to be particularly troubling: "“Misinformation” means false information that is contradicted by contemporary scientific consensus to an extent where its dissemination constitutes gross negligence by the licensee." The problem with this definition is that it treats current scientific consensus as unchallengeable truth.    On June 22, 1633, Galileo di Vincenzo Bonaiuti de' Galilei was condemned for advocating a heliocentric theory of the solar system, a theory that was contradicted by contemporary scientific consensus.  He spent the rest of his life under house arrest, and yet the earth still moves.  Similarly, Charles Darwin's theory of evolution contradicted centuries of scientific consensus with respect to the origin of species. An unintended consequence of this bill will be to stifle the scientific process.  Yet unsparing skepticism is fundamental to the scientific enterprise.  Scientific knowledge is based on a continuing process of questioning, observation and experimentation.  Recently, Dr. Rochelle P. Walensky, the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, was quoted as saying that the C.D.C. was "responsible for some pretty dramatic, pretty public mistakes, from testing to data to communications" with respect to the Covid-19 pandemic.  Although I doubt that AB 2098 was directed at C.D.C. physicians, the bill's definition of "misinformation" certainly creates that possibility."

We saw celebrities and politicians galore flout this supposedly necessary medical precaution, with nary a peep from the mask police who insist children must wear them in schools. And we routinely see our leaders remove them when they believe the cameras have stopped... Choosing to not get vaccinated carries an even greater risk of social stigma and shame. Kramer received a beating for not wearing the AIDS ribbon, but many have suggested the unvaccinated deserve much worse.  TV host Jimmy Kimmel recently said unvaccinated patients should not be treated if they fall ill, while a Florida doctor recently came right out and said she won’t treat unvaccinated patients, as did a physician in Alabama...   The pandemic may have fueled our tribal instincts that seek to browbeat those who stray into conformity, but it’s important to understand it existed beforehand and infects people of all parties, ideologies, and persuasions. (Conservatives who doubt this need only look back at the fury presidential candidate Barack Obama caused when he stopped wearing an American flag pin.)  Extremism can take many forms, but it’s important to understand that Seinfeld’s ribbon enforcers and the COVID bullies share a common trait. Both groups are absolutely convinced that what they are doing is good.  The problem is, good intentions mean very little. The 20th century was the bloodiest century in human history, largely because many humans sought to create a better world by instituting an economic system they believed would solve human problems: socialism."

We don't ask people.”  When she asks the Black seniors she works with in Los Angeles about the vaccine, Tuskegee rarely comes up. People in the community are more interested in talking about contemporary racism and barriers to health care, she says, while it seems to be mainly academics and officials who are preoccupied with the history of Tuskegee... Those who don’t want the vaccine have very modern reasons for not wanting it. They tell Toler it’s because of religious beliefs, safety concerns or distrust for the former U.S. president and his relationship to science. The doubters asked, what kind of scientific evidence is there to support the notion that Black people would refuse to participate in research because of Tuskegee?  When those researchers did a comprehensive search of the existing literature, they found nothing... While Black people were twice as “wary” of participating in research, as compared to white people, they were equally willing to actually participate. And, there was no association between knowledge of Tuskegee and willingness to participate... During the interview, Lopez compared the Sri Lanka riot to the January 6 riot. The interview also highlighted root causes of the Sri Lanka protests, but neglected to mention the country banning chemical fertilizers... The New York Times newsletter did not mention that the Sri Lankan government had also banned chemical fertilizers which environmentalists had blamed for water pollution... 1) Proud Boys did incite in a couple of places, notably Pezzola's initial breach, but overall there has been too much emphasis on them and Oath Keepers. The crowd that surged toward the Capitol was large, amorphous, and mostly un-led.
2) On the minority of Trump rally-goers who ended up inside the Capitol: Whenever they got where they were going, they didn't appear to know what to do then. Mostly milled around, took selfies, and yelled about being inside the Capitol. Then left.
3) The lack of preparation by Capitol Police was even worse then you think. Grossly irresponsible on part of leadership. Also puts killing of Ashli Babbitt in better context.
4) Babbitt aside, police showed incredible restraint in not using firearms against the most aggressive elements of the crowd. Undoubtedly kept situation from becoming much, much worse.
5) On other hand, the riot was dispersed after arrival of more heavily armed, better armored law enforcement. The way to end it was to show force. End."

Incitement Frenzy Carries Free Speech Risks on All Sides - "To "incite" is to encourage a person to commit a crime. No perusal of Trump's remarks that morning can find any explicit encouragement of lawless behavior. But in order to bolster an article of impeachment, the president's accusers say we no longer need an actual, clear call to illegal action. They point to the sharpness of the rhetoric and the frustrations of Trump's base, claiming he must have foreseen the riots... Consider the infamous words of California representative Maxine Waters from the summer of 2018, when she issued recommendations to followers regarding members of the Trump administration: "If you see anybody from that Cabinet in a restaurant, in a department store, at a gasoline station, you get out and you create a crowd and you push back on them and you tell them they're not welcome." We used to hold actual criminals responsible for their actual crimes rather than launch into a retroactive scapegoating rodeo, searching for anything anyone might have said in a search for possible accomplices. In this time of heightened passions on various issues across the political spectrum, we need to rediscover the intellectual discipline to discern what does and does not amount to incitement. Protesters who set various American cities ablaze over the summer were surely aware of claims by athletes and Hollywood stars proclaiming that police are indiscriminately gunning for the nation's black citizens. Were those celebrities also guilty of incitement?"
Any criticism of Jews that happens to resemble historical "stereotypes" is anti-Semitic and so these criticisms are not kosher - so journalists and bankers are immune to criticism. But criticism of the right that is the same as what motivated a shooting is fine

‘I can indeed. And you know, the funny thing actually, this is a brilliant example of how people view British history through the distorting prism of America. Because first of all, the 20s didn't roar in Britain. There's no roaring 20s in Britain, and in Britain, there's actually not much of a transition between the 20s and 30s, because you had quite high unemployment and lots of industrial unrest in Britain in the 20s. But then also, conversely, the Depression wasn't that bad in Britain. It wasn't as bad in Britain, as it was almost anywhere else… it doesn't start in Britain with the Wall Street crash at all. That's complete nonsense. But so at the peak of it's probably 1931 to 1935. It's a big economic downturn, and it particularly hits the north. So it's very regionally specific’...

‘The Second World War is seismic for Britain. I mean, the Second World War is by far the defining moment, I suppose, of the, of the Queen's lifetime, defining, I suppose, in the way that Britain sees itself... the Queen herself is involved in it, because her father says, you know, we will never leave Buckingham Palace, we’ll stay there even during the Blitz when it's been bombed. And she and her sister Margaret, they sort of become patriotic icons, really in the in the Second World War. This is they're doing their bit too, you know, driving Land Rovers or whatever or sort of doling things out to kids at photo ops and stuff. That’s because there's only four of them. 

The royal family seems very small at that point, I think in the 1940s, at least in the public imagination. And I think that family becomes this kind of surrogate for Britain itself. They're seen as kind of a microcosm of the nation. And that sense of sort of duty and service. You know, it's the Queen has always kind of incarnated, you know, almost to the point of cliche. I think she gets a lot of that from the kind of rhetoric of wartime and that's when she comes of age, really. So that in her formative years, the airwaves as it were full of all this stuff about, you know, doing your bit for the country and all this and I think she absolutely absorbs this, and then basically lives it for the rest of her life’

‘It’s one of the ironies, isn't it when you're thinking about how Britain's changed in her lifetime? The one thing that seems to not have changed is the Queen herself. She's been very reliable and consistent.’

‘Yes. And that's been the trick, hasn't it? I mean, actually, it's a really, really interesting conjuring trick. And the Queen is, I think, massively underrated as a political operator. Because on the one hand, she appears not to have changed at all. And to be completely consistent, but actually, she has changed. And a very good example of that. Academics have have spent, you know, many happy hours listening to the Queen's Christmas broadcasts back to back, who would do that for fun? Anyway, they have, and they've tracked the ways that her accent has changed, become more demotic, become you know less, it's hard to believe, but it's become sort of less niche and sort of strangulated over the years. So the Queen has changed, but very subtly. And while always presenting herself as a kind of bulwark of stability. And of course, in turbulent political times, that makes her appeal all the greater’...

‘The washing machine, probably the most underrated sort of historical innovation of the 20th century because what the washing machine does is it liberates housewives, from the, the hours of drudgery of washing, and then drying clothes. And once you don't need to do that, then obviously you can start looking for other ways to spend your time on. One of them is to go and to, go and work. So there's a real sense in the 1950s I think, that it's weird that people look back now and they think of the 50s as terribly staid and done and the 60s as when it all happens, but actually all the foundations for that are laid in the 1950s.’

‘And this is something I wanted to ask you, did the 60s really swing?’

‘So typical historian’s answer: yes and no, they do swing for quite a small minority of people. So if you're that that, you know, 10th of the, of the country who goes in, goes to university, less than 10th in lots of areas actually. And you're affluent. You are kind of outward looking. You live in London, particularly, then yes, it does swing. It does seem like a world of parties, especially if you're aged between kind of 18 and 25. If you live in Barnsley, and you, you're 38 and you've got kids and stuff, do the 60s swing? They don't swing, they're just an extension of the 50s in many ways. They're, you’re, you're better off than ever before. You are kind of broadening your horizons and stuff, going on more day trips, going on the holidays, eating out more, you know redecorating your house, maybe buying a new house, all those kinds of things. Are you going to orgies and hanging around with Paul McCartney? Pretty unlikely.’...

‘And then the 50s and 60s, hundreds of 1000s of immigrants come to Britain. How does this change the nation?’

‘Well, it's an interesting one about immigration, actually, because the sort of trend now is to say, well, oh, there always been lots of black people in Britain. So this wasn't such a big change. I don't think that's right. Actually, I think it was a very big change. And you can tell that from the the accounts of immigrants themselves, when they come they describe the reaction. So the hostility sometimes, but also people are very curious. It may shock some listeners, but it was intensely unpopular, probably the single most unpopular developments of the 1950s and 1960s. But Britain badly needed labour. 

There's also a sort of push factor from the colonies, people want to move to, maybe sometimes to escape sort of straightened [sp?] economic conditions. They believe, they believe they believe a lot of the rhetoric about Imperial brotherhood, they want to make better lives for themselves in what they've been told for years is the mother country and so on. So yes, you have hundreds of 1000s of people moving to Britain from basically two parts of the world, one the Caribbean, islands of the Caribbean, and the other India and Pakistan. And they tend to settle in specific areas that need jobs that need that have, you know, that need labor. So for example, the Mill Towns in West Yorkshire, or in London, or in the West Midlands, they work in, immigrants work in the foundries and so on, or they work driving buses, and all these kinds of things, or for the NHS, 

The tragedy is that actually, some of this areas that attract high immigration in the 1950s, are then going to decline massively 10 or 20 years later. So for some immigrant communities, the ladder that they might reasonably expect will be there in 10, or 20 years time for their children ends up disappearing...

Brexit was probably quite good for the Queen and for the monarchy, because because they're in a very, very hyper politicized age. And basically, everybody claimed to have all this great knowledge about a question they hadn't thought about before 2016 and was incredibly impassioned, and had this belief that they want the forces of light and their opponents with the forces of darkness. 

The queen, having no opinion about anything at all, seemed like this beacon of sense and, and non involvement in this sort of massive bear pit. New Study Suggests Playing With Dolls Proves A Boy Is Transgender - "Study author Selin Gülgöz said the study was limited in scope due to the fact that all of the transgender children were already moving towards increased identification with the opposite sex and lived with families that encouraged their dysphoria.  She notes this means the study’s conclusions might not apply to children who do not live in families who do not enable feelings of gender dysphoria. Interviewing children aged 3 to 12 who have already adopted an opposite-sex gender identity to determine a biological origin of transgender identity is, on its face, biased.   Asking a child who already assumes the role of the opposite sex if he prefers social identifiers like clothing and toys associated with that sex is not an effective method of understanding if these preferences are inherent. Yet Dr. Stuart Chipkin of the University of Massachusetts-Amherst concluded the study “helps to confirm the unique and separate reality of gender and how it is distinct from biological sex and socialization... The researchers attempt to address this by arguing that the children were treated as their “assigned sex” for a time before their behavior and preferences caused their parents to recognize their conflicting gender identity. They reason that if gender preferences were indeed socially constructed, then the children would have adopted the preferences imposed onto them by society until that point... The assumption here is that toys, clothing, or color preferences are inherently biological and strictly binary: Boys like trucks and the color blue, and girls like dolls and the color pink. This conflicts with decades of liberal and feminist argument in favor of gender neutrality and against “gendered” toys and clothing... What happened to LGBT advocates and feminists arguing against strict gender roles?   The final and most important aspect of this study that should be concerning is the absolute reliance on young children supernaturally divining their own nature in spite of their physical selves. The study notes, “Gender expression or identity for some of them might shift in the future, or their level of support and affirmation might change.”  If this is the case, then how can they advocate for an inherent gender identity when they recognize it can change over time? The study authors go to great lengths in attempting to prove that the transgender children’s identity was not influenced in any way by their parents, although their core study group fell within a small population of parents willing to transition their kids as young as age three...  This study erases gay people entirely by implying any gender non-conforming behavior in young children is evidence of transgender identity.”

Of course, the Reimer tragedy could have been an opportunity to dispassionately examine the concept of “gender identity”. But psychologists, journalists and academics have overwhelmingly gone in the other direction, retroactively redefining “gender identity” rather than learning lessons from its ugly past.   When reminded of the Reimer tragedy, transgender activists suggest that the problem was that Bruce Reimer was really “cisgender” (newspeak for a person at ease with his natal sex; or a “normal man or woman”, per Blanchard). But such people are overlooking the more obvious fact that Bruce Reimer was a boy who was told repeatedly from his authority figures that he was a girl, as well as the more credible argument that misinforming a child about his basic biology can be psychologically damaging... There are no good answers to these questions, no way out of the gnarled web of contradiction. Presumably, this is why curiosity on the subject is not encouraged. Instead, transgenderism, the new theory of “gender identity”, has become a catch-all: an ideologically fashionable belief system, promising salvation to believers and damnation for heretics.   Those who don’t believe in the new idea of gender identity have become like atheists living in a theocratic society. Imagine, for instance, if an atheist wanted to have a debate with a Christian about the existence of God. But that, as a condition of the debate, the Christian demanded that the atheist not blaspheme, as well as refer to him throughout as a “child of God”. Further, imagine if those facilitating the debate expected the atheist to acquiesce to this demand or else be considered malicious or ignorant. This is precisely what is happening with the transgender debate every time a non-believer feels obligated to use words such as “transgender”, “gender identity”, or pronouns that do not match the sex of his or her opponent... In what other debate do we allow our opponents to dictate our language?...   Ask yourself which of the following you find to be more convincing. That everybody was born “in” a body, then “assigned” a sex by some careless God or whimsical doctor. Or that everybody is a body: immutably sexed (which is, to some extent, disguisable). One of these positions is settled science: self-evident and, until recently, uncontroversial. The other is an oversimplification of a mental disorder, at best. And at worst, a superstition."

Janssen: "The best data that we have, and the best longitudinal data that we have about transgender youth, comes primarily out of the Dutch clinic... That's the prevailing model that most American clinics have based their care upon."  One of those Dutch researchers disagrees. Dr. Thomas Steensma of the Amsterdam University Medical Center said in 2021 that "the rest of the world is blindly adopting our research."  He was referring to the fact that the majority of those referred to pediatric gender clinics today do not fit the profile, or fulfill the criteria for eligibility, of the patients on whom the Dutch study was conducted. It's very clear, if you just read the Dutch articles and look at the data compiled from the Tavistock clinic and by Komodo Health in the U.S.  Dr. Kaltiala, head of Finland's largest gender clinic who testified in favor of the Florida rule, also emphasized this point. The discrepancy in patient populations, and with it the real possibility that the protocol developed in the Dutch study may not apply to other cohorts, is what prompted Sweden, Finland, and the U.K. to investigate, do systematic reviews of the evidence, and slam on the breaks. No less problematic, for Janssen, is a recent finding by investigative reporters at Reuters.
 Reuters: "[D]octors and other staff at 18 gender clinics across the [U.S.] described their processes for evaluating patients. None described anything like the months-long assessments de Vries [lead author of the Dutch study] and her colleagues adopted in their research." Not only does 1 of the Dutch researchers disagree with Janssen about the applicability of their research, but American clinicians involved in this area of medicine themselves say that the Dutch protocol is not being applied here. And recall: per Janssen, this is the "best data." Setting aside the applicability problem, which is fatal to Janssen's argument, the Dutch study itself suffers from fatal weaknesses, meaning that even when applied to the intended patient population, it is very low quality evidence-based care."

The Dutch Protocol for Juvenile Transsexuals: Origins and Evidence - "It has been a quarter of a century since Dutch clinicians proposed puberty suppression as an intervention for “juvenile transsexuals,” which became the international standard for treating gender dysphoria. This paper reviews the history of this intervention and scrutinizes the evidence adduced to support it. The intervention was justified by claims that it was reversible and that it was a tool for diagnosis, but these claims are increasingly implausible. The main evidence for the Dutch protocol came from a longitudinal study of 70 adolescents who had been subjected to puberty suppression followed by cross-sex hormones and surgery. Their outcomes shortly after surgery appeared positive, except for the one patient who died, but these findings rested on a small number of observations and incommensurable measures of gender dysphoria. A replication study conducted in Britain found no improvement. While some effects of puberty suppression have been carefully studied, such as on bone density, others have been ignored, like on sexual functioning."

Argentinian man legally changes gender 'so he can retire earlier' - "An Argentinian tax worker who changed his gender on official documents after claiming to identify as female actually did it in order to retire earlier, a relative says.  Sergia Lazarovich, 60, a government worker from the northern province of Salta, applied to change her gender in June last year, having lived for decades as Sergio... Argentinian law allows any person to change their gender on identity documents to match their self-perception, without having to provide evidence of hormone treatment or gender reassignment surgery.  The law also allow women to retire on a state pension aged 60, whereas men have to wait until age 65...
