My favourite Facebook Group join questions

sounds like performative wokeness but ok | Facebook

Qn: What are your views on the DPRK's stance on the Israel-Palestine conflict's effects on transmisogynoir within the aromantic community? Haiku answers preferred.

My answer (sadly it was cut off):

DPRK is
A Workers' Paradise yes
Its stance must be good

Standing with Workers
And anti-Imperialists
It condemns the Jews

Jews are Privileged
So all the true trans women
Must condemn Israel

Trans women are real
Trans women are real indeed
Trans women are real

Sexuality
Is all valid yes it is
Aromantic too

DPRK stands
With aromantics always
Affirming them all

Workers' Paradise
Does support all transwomen
Down with Israel now

Qn: What level of woke is you?

My answer: I check my privilege every hour and look for poor, gay, disabled, black, Muslim, trans-non-binaries from less developed countries ravaged by Imperialism to support as a good ally

Qn: do you unquestioningly believe a narrative regardless of how well you know the person being presented in a bad light? why is it WORSE to believe extreme accusations without question?

My answer (sadly it was cut off): Yes, if it supports wokeness. As a Person of Privilege it's not my place to question another's lived experience and account of oppression, and I need to be part of the latest lynch mob of the day to Speak Truth To Power and get someone who earns less than me fired for being a Bigot because Cancel Culture is not real and only Accountability Culture exists

The snipers in Dallas may have pulled the trigger. But make no mistake, it was Black Lives Matter that loaded the guns.

The snipers in Dallas may have pulled the trigger. But make no mistake, it was Black Lives Matter that loaded the guns.

Every time protestors condemned the shooting of a black man by police regardless of the circumstances and you nodded without questioning, you loaded one bullet.

When you hijacked a gay parade and intimidated them into excluding the police despite their strong support of LGBTQs, you loaded another.

Then when you paraded “demanding an end to racist police murder” - despite the fact that white men are shot more by police once you correct for homicide rates, you loaded one more.

When people chanted "Pigs in a blanket, fry 'em like bacon!" and you pretended they weren't representative, or excused them because they were 'victims', you loaded yet another.

Each time you chanted "hands up, don't shoot" despite it being a lie, you nudged the safety until it turned off.

You and your hateful kinds helped perpetuate a global chain of hate. And yesterday, that chain reached men in Dallas with access to guns.

All they had to do was pull the trigger. A million SJWs had already loaded the guns.

And now you still want to blame white people. What a fucking irony.

A Car is not a Necessity in Singapore

Is having a car a necessity? You can take the MRT

Is having an MRT near your house a necessity? You can take a bus to the station

Is having a bus to take you to the MRT station a necessity? You can cycle there

Is having a bicycle to go to the MRT station a necessity? You can walk

Why Singapore needs to Arrest those who Stare at Others

Suppose I am on the MRT and I see an Ah Beng covered in tattoos, which even cover his face. He also has gang tattoos on his face.

I look at his tattoos because I am trying to make out what they are.

He thinks that I am staring at him and beats me up.

I am, of course, to blame for offending him by staring at him. I have caused the assault in which he beats me up by staring at him.

Recall Singapore's long history of secret societies during which there were lots of riots and gang fights resulting in many deaths.

In 1957, the Colonial Office reported that there were 150 gang fights. Yet, the problem of gangs goes back even further than that.

In the early 1840s, the town of Singapore lived in fear from Chinese secret societies which raided the town almost every night. In 1854 there were the Hokkien-Teochew Riots which lasted 10 days and where about 500 people died - these were the worst and most prolonged riots in Singapore's history. This was one of the darkest periods in Singapore’s history. Gang violence has left deep marks in Singapore's history and it is a period in time which we never want to repeat.

Even today, the problem of gangs has not entirely disappeared and we read about gang fights every now and then. In 2010 at Downtown East in Pasir Ris, there was a gang fight (resulting from an allegation of staring) that resulted in one death. In the same year, there was another death from a gang fight outside Orchard Plaza. In 2013 there was a riot in Pasir Ris over a staring incident.

It is important for us to remember the tragic consequences of staring at others.

It is clear that staring at others is a clear and present threat to Singapore's national fabric, and that we should be conscious of the damage that we can do by provoking people by staring at them (who might be gang members, in which case the resulting violence could spiral out of control). Social peace and harmony should never be taken for granted.

When you stare at someone, you are not showing him respect. Respect will always be a potential fault line in Singapore's society.

We must learn lessons from Singapore's history and enact laws that make it illegal to stare at people (or at people with tattoos), and teach children in school that they shouldn't stare at people because staring is a very sensitive action and people could get offended (and be moved to violence, which could tear the country apart, especially if the person they happen to stare at happens to be a gang member).

Indeed, we should arrest people who stare at others - because they risk provoking gang riots which could tear the country apart.

Feminist Advertising: SDN Postcard

"Pain is real when you get other people to believe in it. If no one believes in it but you, your pain is madness or hysteria." ― Naomi Wolf

***

Recently, I came across feminist rage over the following SDN postcard:

 photo SDN_front_zpse3ec7ae1.jpg
"Evolution. Gotta love it!"

The reverse (not fisked) reads:

 photo SDN_back_zps8129b475.jpg
"Follow your heart, not your checklist. Sharp dressing and good looks don't solve arguments - beauty is in someone who understands and evolves with you.

Love happens anywhere, everywhere. Give love a chance."

The list of charges:

potato-skins: This ad postcard by the Social Development Network (SDN aka a government-run dating agency here in Singapore) makes me so angry that I actually feel physically unwell.

I am going to have to do this in point form because I’m so angry and I will try to be coherent. These are my problems with it, and I’m no expert:

1) It imposes this ‘natural’ progression of an individual’s life. This view of what you should be doing but the nuclear family unit is a relatively modern phenomenon. Moreover this vision of heteronormality is one that has been determined by the government, not the individual.

2) This is not science, so don’t you dare use the word “evolution”. This is social engineering, not factual objective science.

3) What about the people who are not cis, straight or otherwise don’t fit into the male/female dichotomy of ‘mainstream’ society? Are my gay, trans, asexual (and so on) friends somehow less evolved than their cis and straight counterparts?

4) By being of majority age but single, I am somehow less evolved than my friends who are in relationships. This enrages me beyond words. My relationship status DOES NOTdetermine the value of my life. I will pay my taxes, I will contribute to society, I will make someone’s life a bit more interesting, I will stimulate the economy, I will be filial to my parents. But just because of one thing — I am not in a relationship with a member of the opposite sex, either by choice or circumstance — I am worth less in the eyes of the government. I am less evolved. I am not a human being who is worth much.

5) Women are not gachapon machines. You do not put money into them and out pops a baby. So many factors determine whether couples choose to have a child/ren that aren’t just financial. It is demeaning and sexist and patriarchal and assumes that the couple’s natural place — the woman’s natural place — is to have children.

6) You do not determine what I do with my body. Not just as a woman, but as a human being. YOU HAVE NO RIGHT.

7) Because SDN is a government agency, these are being printed with taxpayer money. This vision of hetero-normality is being imposed on us, against our will, with our money.

That’s all I can think about and articulate right now, because I am just so angry. Shame on you, SDN. Shame on you, government.

#made by me #feminism #power and justice #social justice #singapore

mizhallelujah: When I first saw this, I actually thought it was some homophobic claptrap being circulated by Singapore’s equivalent of the religious right. You’re telling me this was printed and paid for by state money?

“Rage” doesn’t even being to articulate what I am feeling now. Good thing Viki managed to express my thoughts above because I want to do is to throw my keyboard into the screen. REPEATEDLY.

Nevermind that the SDN had hugely, disgustingly classist and frankly eugenic roots as an organisation that was started specifically to “encourage” university graduates to hook up with each other because oh noes we need our smart people to breed with other smart people and make smart babies BARF

# power and society; lgbtq; sexism; singapore; fuck you omg; seriously just fuck you

A few points they missed out:

- This postcard is ageist because it claims that older people are more evolved than younger
- The postcard is sexist because it shows that only men can evolve (notice the woman exists only to be a partner for the male)
- It is religiously insensitive, because not everybody believes in Evolution
- It's insensitive to left handers, because it privileges the rightward direction and associates it with progress (did you know left handed people used to be openly discriminated against within living memory? Or that they are more prone to post traumatic stress disorder [undoubtedly due to social discrimination]? Shocking!)
- It reinforces gender stereotypes with the male having short hair all his life and the female having longish hair (and wearing a skirt) Oh, my soul - how it hurts to be unable to see itself reflected even in such a simple postcard?! I am going to feel physically sick very soon.

As such, I have done a feminist re-imagining of this postcard:

 photo Existencecentred_zps28864120.jpg
(I was going to put "Gotta exist!" at the bottom, but that would be insensitive for people who want to commit suicide/the memory of people who have committed suicide as it would be coercing them into living)

Doesn't this make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside, and want to go out and get together with someone, and then make babies (or adopt them, for couples not consisting of a man and a woman, both fertile; or do absolutely nothing at all, for those who are happy being single)?

Of course, I'm not sure if this inclusive design would fit on a postcard. Perhaps it would, but the aspect ratio would be really off and the silhouettes would be so small one wouldn't know what the hell the postcard was about.

Assuming we worked through all the logistical issues, can you imagine the reception such a postcard would enjoy? I bet AWARE and feminists would be really happy, and would encourage the rest of the population to celebrate this inclusive work.

Unfortunately I was unable to be truly inclusive and include trans-gendered portrayals. Among other reasons, due to cis gender privilege, I was unable to think of a way to portray transsexuals in silhouette form. As such I regretfully announce that my feminist re-imagining is still trans-phobic.

Also, I was unable to find a silhouette of a little girl where she doesn't have long hair and is not wearing a skirt. As such I am reinforcing gender stereotypes. Think of all the little girls who don't wear skirts and/or don't have long hair who will see this reimagined postcard and get it in their mind that they are not real girls. Ditto for the silhouette of the woman. Oh, dear me!

Worse, to save space and avoid repeating myself, I didn't replicate every single progression series of silhouettes. There are now 2 series showing the life of a male who forms a couple but only one showing the life of a female who forms a couple (and she is lesbian). Quelle horreur ! And also, because I had to go and eat dinner, I was unable to do a series representing a female who gets into a heterosexual relationship, or a male single (since it is important to keep statistical equality so neither gender feels oppressed because of having one fewer series for them). Male privilege strikes again, privileging the male story (or history), and sidelining the female version (herstory).

I am also really ashamed that I was unable to find a usable silhouette of a proper lesbian couple, and was thus reduced to using two generic female figures. This dehumanises lesbians by reducing them to an abstract representation of their gender, instead of representing them as proper living human beings like the rest of the silhouettes.

I think I still failed in my mission and have been an agent of Bigotry. Ah well.

It thus falls to greater sorts (hopefully a lesbian who won't suffer from Straight Privilege and Male Privilege) to design an even more inclusive postcard and spend taxpayers' money promoting absolutely no cause at all, since we cannot oppress people by even encouraging them to do anything.

While I'm on my high horse, let me give a big FUCK YOU to the government of Singapore for determining what I do with my body. The Human Organ Transplant Act is a gross violation of my right to bodily integrity, because even though it's opt-out you're trying to coerce me into doing something with my body. YOU HAVE NO RIGHT.

At the same time, I condemn the National Healthy Lifestyle Programme for privileging a state-sanctioned conception of health and imposing it upon us with taxpayers' money, against our will.

Shame on you! Shame, shame, shame.

Something to do this Saturday

Alexis was pimping an event called Real Love Works 2012 (it's not supported by SDN but MCYS is behind it and anyway it's in the SDN spirit so I've tagged it as such).

At Punggol Waterway this Saturday from 5:30pm-7:30pm, entry to this event is billed as "Free for all in love".

Description of the event: "Come celebrate the excitement and joys of marriage with Marriage Central at the launch of Real Love Works. Stroll down Punggol Waterway in this fun and unique walk with meaningful couple activities from tying a love knot on the Heart of Marriage, harvesting the flower of love, to capturing memorable moments with our iPhone "Love Journal" app and more! Cuddle up close to your spouse as you watch the sunset together and enjoy an evening of smooth jazz featuring popular artistes."

Meanwhile the registration form just asks for:

"Name of Contact person
IC no.
Contact no.
Partner’s name
Partner's IC no.
Partner's Contact no."

It doesn't ask for gender, or say you to have to be married. So I'm now looking for a guy friend (one I already know, of course - preferably married, even) to go with!

PA to be applauded for sticking to its policy

Letter from Yee Jun Xian

I COMMEND the People's Association for assiduously ensuring that the grassroots organisations will continue to work closely with the Government.

When I first saw the angry retorts to the PA's explanation on why Opposition Members of Parliament cannot be grassroots advisers, I was bemused and a little disturbed.

Now, I applaud the PA for sticking with its policy despite the public pressure. It has to carry out the important task of connecting people with the Government, a process that cannot be compromised by having Opposition MPs as advisers.

Writers write. Teachers teach. Opposition MPs oppose. The logic is simple and irrefutable.

Opposition MPs are meant to be an alternative voice, but that voice should be restricted to Parliament. Otherwise, they have no other duty and, indeed, cannot be trusted with any other duty.

Perhaps certain members of the public are offended that their MPs, simply because they are from the Opposition, are not allowed to be advisers and represent their interests in the PA. But these people will have to live with their vote at the recent General Election.

Important Addendum: The original version of the letter puts a VERY different spin on the writer's intent:

"The simple truth is that these people have no one to blame but themselves. They did not vote wisely, and this is what they deserve.

Ladies and gentlemen, please repent."

Comment on TODAY: "When will people learn! Do not write forum letters in satirical prose!"

Seen around

PLEASE put this as your status if you know or are related to someone who has been eaten by penguins. Penguins are nearly unstoppable, and when hungry, also breathe fire. 71% of people won't copy this into their status because they have already been eaten by penguins, 28% are hiding in their showers with fire extinguishers awaiting the coming penguinocalypse, another 3% can't do the math, and the remaining 1% are awesome and will re-post...

How Romance Novels screw women up

Mills and Boon 'cause marital breakdown'

"With their chiselled menfolk and swooning heroines, Mills & Boon novels are a guilty pleasure.

They are also a cause of marital breakdown, adulterous affairs and unwanted pregnancies, according to a warning published by the British Medical Journal.

Far from being a slice of innocent escapism for millions of female readers, romantic novels are a danger to relationships and sexual health. That is the verdict of an article in the Journal of Family Planning and Reproductive Health Care, which said women struggle to distinguish between romantic fiction and real life.

Susan Quilliam, a relationship psychologist and author of the article, said that a "huge number" of problems dealt with in family planning clinics have their roots in romance novels.

"What we see in our consulting rooms is more likely to be informed by Mills & Boon than by the Family Planning Association," she said, claiming that the values of romantic fiction "run totally counter to the [messages] we try to promote".

"We warn of the stresses of pregnancy and child-rearing, and we discourage relentless baby-making as proof of a relationship's strength. Above all, we teach that sex may be wonderful and relationships loving, but neither are ever perfect and idealising them is the short way to heartbreak. But are our lessons falling on deaf ears when compared to the values of the Regency heroine gazing adoringly across the Assembly Rooms to catch a glimpse of her man?

"When it comes to romantic fiction, the clue's in the name; the genre is fiction not fact, and while romance may be the wonderful foundation for a novel, it's not in itself a sufficiently strong foundation for running a lifelong relationship. But I do wonder how many of our clients truly realise that."

Women who read romance novels can "suspend rationality" in favour of romanticism, Miss Quilliam said, including "not using protection with a new man because she wants to be swept up by the moment as a heroine would" or being persuaded to give up contraception a few months into a relationship.

"It might mean terminating a pregnancy (or continuing with one) against all her moral codes because that same man asks her to... or judging that if romance has died then so has love, and that rather than working at her relationship she should be hitching her star to a new romance."

Living the life of a romantic heroine can also have serious sexual health implications, Miss Quilliam said. "To be blunt, we [sexual health professionals] like condoms - for protection and for contraception - and they don't."

Even though modern Mills & Boon heroines have jobs and the heroes can be sensitive, the books still contain "a deep strand of escapism, perfectionism and idealisation... clearly these messages run totally counter to those we try to promote".

Miss Quilliam's article was published by the BMJ on behalf of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.

A Mills & Boon spokesman said: "At Mills & Boon, we publish romantic fiction, not sexual health manuals. Our books reflect rather than instruct real life situations and, while many of our authors feature condoms in their sex scenes, as with real life, there are occasions when condoms aren't used.

"Romantic fiction is about escaping from everyday life, and is not a guide to reality, and our readers are intelligent enough to understand the difference."

Mills & Boon was founded in 1908 and sells 130 million titles worldwide each year. They have been translated into 26 languages, are sold in 109 countries and one is bought every four seconds."

Are Feminism and Romance Novels Mutually Exclusive? - "I don't know how you can read many romances today as anything but feminist"

"Romance novels do not leap off the shelf and assault men and women. Men and women could, in theory, walk safely past whole warehouses full of it, quietly resting in its jackets. It is what happens through its use that is the problem... Romance novel consumers are not consuming an idea any more than eating a load of bread is consuming the ideas on its wrapper or the ideas in its recipe... Romance novels do not engage the conscious mind in the chosen way the model of 'content,' in terms of which it is largely defended, envisions and requires. In the words of Judge Easterbrook, describing this dynamic, romance novels 'do not persuade people so much as change them'...

Sooner or later, in one way or another, the consumers want to live out the romance novels further in three dimensions. Sooner or later, in one way or another, they do. It makes them want to; when they believe they can, when they feel they can get away with it, they do... As romance novel consumers, teachers may become epistemically incapable of seeing students as off-limits and unconsciously teach about statutory rape from the viewpoint of the accused. Doctors may molest anesthetized women, enjoy watching and inflicting pain during childbirth, and use romance novels to teach sex education in medical school. Some consumers write on bathroom walls. Some undoubtedly write judicial opinions.

Some romance novel consumers presumably serve on juries, sit on the Senate Judiciary Committee, answer police calls reporting domestic violence, edit media accounts of child sexual abuse, and produce mainstream films. Some make husbands and sons and clients and students look at it and do what is in it. Some sexually harass their employers, employees and clients, get date raped and then later blame the men when their expectations are not met, encourages nuns to run away from convents, become mistresses and prostitutes and accustoms them to bad editing -- with romance novels present and integral to the acts. Some seduce men in sororities and at rest stops on highways, holding up the romance novels and reading them aloud and mimicking them. Some try to turn themselves into vampires -- using and writing romance novels is inextricable to these acts -- either freelancing or in vampire packs known variously as vampire clubs, religious cults, or fan fiction rings. Some write romance novels for their own use and as a sex act in itself, or in order to make money and support the group's habit."

Our Disgusting Car Theft Culture

"The least of learning is done in the classrooms." - Thomas Merton

***

victim's blaming! on Twitpic

By seeking to divert responsibility from the car thief to the car owner, this sign and signs like this are engaging in Victim Blaming. If you leave valuables exposed in your vehicle, you are asking for it, and the asshole who smashed your windscreen or side window to steal your stuff is absolved of blame - because we know car thieves lack free will, and are unable to resist whenever they see valuables lying in vehicles. Car thieves are entitled to steal any valuables they see exposed in vehicles. Car theft seems to be the only crime where it’s seen as ok to put the victim on trial.

Car theft apologism and hatred of car owners is clearly evident here. If you own a car, you are not sovereign over it - it is your responsibility to cover up valuables. Nevermind the principle of private property - your car is not yours to do with as you please. Are we living in Soviet Russia? Every car owner has the right to leave his car unlocked and expose his valuables in his vehicle, without the fear of car theft.

Whoever designed this poster is clearly a weeping syphilitic chode. Perhaps he is even a car thief himself.

We need to organise mass protests where everyone will leave valuables exposed in their vehicles. That will show them!

We can call them "CarWalks"

Here are more revolting examples of Car Theft Culture:

Addendum:

(this one has the revolting line that "Auto burglaries are the number one victim-assisted crime and they can be prevented!")

BREAKING: Group claiming to represent “Singaporean citizens and permanent residents concerned with the continuing existence of a secular civil society in Singapore” launched a petition to remove the new Aware exco (or: Why Wayang Party is a Piece of Shit)

From The Informant Network Team

The Aware AGM which saw a new guards gaining control of the organization did not end, precipitating an aggressive counter-strike by the self-proclaimed “concerned with the continuing existence of a secular civil society in Singapore” group to exert pressure on the exco to accede to their demands.

An online petition started by Singaporeans overseas garnered 2,700 signatures in less than two weeks, forcing Aware to stop all activities and hold an EGM.

A smear campaign was launched against the new exco in retaliation for their successful and democratic bid for power to derail their plans for Aware.

The rampant character assassination reached a boiling point when netizens wrote in to DBS to put pressure on Ms Josie Lau's job and made death threats against the new exco, culminating in their filing a police report (read article here)

Undaunted, the group has started a petition - to exert pressure on the new Aware exco quit Aware as soon as possible:

The identity of the petition starter is unknown. However, he/she claims that they are “Singaporeans overseas and at home [who] are very concerned about the take-over of the Association of Women for Action and Research (AWARE) on 28 March 2009 by a group of people, whose values are opposed to what AWARE stands for.”

This is the usual astroturfing at play again to create a “fake grassroot” support under the cloak of “progressive contingent” to impose their own liberal values onto mainstream society.

In spite of earlier warnings given by the Government to keep religion and politics separate, and that our laws do not derive from religious authority, but reflect the judgments and decisions of the secular government, these groups continue to sow discord and promote division within our society by pressing on with their agenda.

In spite, too, of earlier warnings given by the Government that we are a Conservative Society which Frowns Upon Homosexuality, these groups are trying to push their Gay and Liberal Agenda on society, and impose their Western Values upon us, which will ultimately lead to the Legalization of Gay Marriage.

Aware should simply ignore the petitions started by anonymous individuals. They are probably circulated amongst the same group of people who are responsible for the earlier petition to repeal 377A.

As we have observed previously, these zealots are extremely tenacious, unreasonable and aggressive. Once a precedent is set, they will take it as a sign of weakness to push the boundaries further.

What next after they are done with Aware? Will they seek to impose their views on other policies such as gay marriage, euthanasia, drugs and men with long hair?

Never before had our peaceful, harmonious and stable society been wrecked by so much tension and discord within a short span of time.

The authorities should nip the problem quickly in the bud before it festers like an ugly sore in our fragile social fabric. These people are not amenable to reasoning and they will not stop until they achieve their aims.

The astroturfing is probably masterminded by a few people in positions of authority. Identify them and their links with one another and the truth will be out.

What are their intentions? Why are they bent to create havoc and unrest in the midst of an economic turmoil? Don’t they have other things to worry about other than homosexual and anal sex?

Aware’s reputation has suffered irreparable damage with the malicious, vile and baseless accusations that it will now pursue an anti-feminist, anti-gay agenda through promoting homosexuality to our school children through its CSE and other activities. It is unbelievable that a NGO which traces its roots to the PAP and has no real power anyway can do much to hurt women or gays.

The new guards should seriously consider suing certain people for criminal defamation to salvage Aware’s battered reputation. It is pointless to reason with people who is only interested in imposing their world views on those who disagree with them.

The government cannot sit idly by allowing these groups to run amok in our country. They are highly motivated, organized and efficient which make them a powerful lobby group in future elections. Will the PAP allow its policies to be held ransom constantly by these liberal zealots?

It is time to break them up before they become uncontrollable. A line has clearly been crossed. Procrastination will only embolden them to go further. A strong message need to be send across that liberalism should be kept solely within the confines of their own respective institutions and our social arena must always be a conservative one.

Original piece of shit:

BREAKING: Group claiming to represent “conservative majority” of Singaporeans launched another petition to MOE to remove Aware as sex education provider : The Wayang Party (大戏党)

Commentary:

I may not agree with practically everything the "conservatives" are for, but even a serial killer deserves a fair trial.

Since many of my points will admittedly be hard to grasp, here're most of them:

- Wayang Party has bad grammar
- Wayang Party promiscuously demonises those with opposing views
- Wayang Party flippantly dismisses those with “pro-family” views (yes, these people do exist, and they are non-negligible), raising a cry of astro-turfing which could justifiably be applied to stands they themselves are sympathetic to
- When people accuse and condemn PAP MPs, this is transparency and democracy in action and they shouldn't complain. When people accuse and condemn non-PAP MPs, it's character assassination (I can't point to specific instances, but this is my overall assessment)
- They condemn the government repeatedly, unreservedly and sometimes contradictorily and incoherently. See, for example: Amazing speed at which Rojak seller is charged diverts attention away from role of authorities vs More serious questions to be asked about Mas Selamat’s stunning escape from Singapore; as with Creationism, all is made clear when you understand that they are working backwards from a conclusion (the government sucks/is evil) to come up with a semblance of an argument. This is one reason why I eschew identifying either as "pro-government/PAP" or "anti-government/PAP", since the former are mindlessly pro-government and the latter mindlessly anti-. (See also: the time I got called a "smart ass NUS rubbish pro-PAP scholar")
- The above notwithstanding, they call on it to take action when it suits them to have other people hit with a big stick; "sow discord and promote division within our society by pressing on with their agenda" - that's a great excuse to shut Wayang Party itself down. What's sauce for the Goose is sauce for the Gander (see also: advocating the use of defamation suits)
- They feverishly fling nonsensical accusations in the hope that at least some of them will stick. For example, what does saying we're a Conservative Society have to do with mixing religion and politics?! See also: the other hysterical hyperbole.
[Addendum:
- They condemn people for being anonymous while being anonymous themselves]

So, in conclusion, Wayang Party is even more shitty than The Online Citizen and you should read it for the same reason you slow down to look at a car crash.

Temasek CEO Ho Ching to Step Down; Chip Goodyear to Take Over

"Temasek Holdings Pte said Chief Executive OfficerHo Ching will step down after almost seven years at the helm of Singapore's $130 billion state-owned investment company.

Ho, wife of Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, will be replaced by Chip Goodyear, 51, a former CEO of BHP Billiton Ltd...

Ho's departure comes as slumping global stock markets slashed the value of investments by Temasek, which generated shareholder returns of 17 percent between its inception in 1974 and the end of March. Ho increased investments in financial services to 40 percent of Temasek's total portfolio, by buying stakes in banks including Merrill Lynch & Co."

Ah, it is a sad day indeed for Singapore and locally-born Singaporeans.

Once again, Foreign Talent has edged aside a Singaporean, in the job of caring for the family silver, no less.

Verily, "Singaporeans jobs for Singaporeans" should be the motto guiding us through these dark times laden with layoffs!

This is also a sign to us that we cannot be complacent. We must tighten our belts and prepare for more wage and CPF cuts so that we can remain competitive in the global marketplace.

German government to tighten laws against Jews
Posted: 17 January 1936 1618 hrs

Special Commissioner Hans Hinkel (file pic)

BERLIN: Germany's Special Commissioner for "cultural particulars" at the Reich Ministry for the People's Enlightenment and Propaganda said the country, which is hosting the 1936 Summer Olympics this year, may further tighten laws against Jews, according to reports.

Hans Hinkel, who is also Reich Organization Leader of the Fighting Society for German Culture, said the Reich is reviewing the Nuremberg Laws and may pass legislation to deal more effectively with Jews and Mischlings.

The legislation is expected to be passed in time for the Summer Olympics in August which could attract both local and overseas Jews, he said.

US president Franklin Roosevelt is among the 49 leaders scheduled to attend the games.

Laws for the Protection of German Blood and German Honour laws are already tight in Germany, where marriages and extramarital sex between Jews and citizens of German or kindred blood are forbidden and Jews are forbidden to display the national flag.

Nevertheless, Herr Hinkel said fresh legislation is needed to deal more effectively with Jews, while relaxing regulations on people of German Blood.

He said the Gestapo could be granted power to take action before Jews could pollute the German bloodline, and cited births of children of mixed blood, and couplings of foreign Jews with German nationals.

"They make a show of breaking the law," Hinkel said of the couplers.

"The Gestapo watch and do nothing and can only follow up with investigation after the show is over when they clean up. This cannot go on," he said."

Singapore government to tighten laws against protests
Posted: 17 January 2009 1618 hrs

DPM Wong Kan Seng (file pic)

SINGAPORE: Singapore's deputy prime minister said the island state, which is hosting a summit of Asia Pacific leaders this year, may further tighten laws against public protests, according to reports.

Wong Kan Seng, who is also Home Affairs Minister, said the government is reviewing public order laws and may pass legislation to deal more effectively with illegal protests and other acts of civil disobedience.

The legislation is expected to be passed in time for the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in November which could attract both local and overseas protesters, he said.

US president-elect Barack Obama, due to take office next week, is among the 21 leaders scheduled to attend the summit.

Public order laws are already tight in Singapore, where protests require a police permit if held outside a designated free-speech zone and gatherings of five or more people are illegal.

Nevertheless, Mr Wong said fresh legislation is needed to deal more effectively with political activities, while relaxing regulations on people gathering for social and recreational purposes.

He said police could be granted power to take action before protesters could gather at specific areas such as Parliament, and cited protests by the political opposition, and by Myanmar nationals against their country's ruling military government.

"They make a show of breaking the law," Wong said of the protesters.

"The police watch and do nothing and can only follow up with investigation after the show is over when they pack up and leave. This cannot go on," he said."

For Immediate Release:
August 21, 2008
Beijing, China

OFFICIAL STATEMENT:

In a joint statement issued by the presidents of the World Anti-Doping Agency, International Olympic Committee (IOC), and the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), the following foods have been placed on the list of banned substances issued by WADA: yam, green bananas, cocoa, dasheen, breadfruit, ackee and saltfish, mackeral run down, turned cornmeal, Jerked pork and chicken, escovietched fish Malta, Supligen, Milo (said to be the food drink of Champions), Horlicks and coconut oil. Jamaicans seem to become extremely athletic on diets with these foods. Coming out of WADA labs, one of the major banned substances from Jamaica is the Cassava root, a high fibre, high starch tuber root eaten in Jamaica. It has properties which are said to enhance endurance and cause muscle fibres to twitch faster. This comes after extensive study of the diets of the Jamaican athletes which took part in the Beijing 2008 Olympic games. Though natural foods it is felt by WADA that these foods because of their unique properties give Jamaican athletes an unfair advantage. High concentrations of carbohydrates and other naturally occurring substances are said to be mimicking the effects of Performance Enhancing Drugs (PEDs). Some foods have been noted to in particular cause an unusual increase in the male hormone testosterone. As such WADA has seen it fit to add these foods to the list of banned substances. Given the sensitivity of this issue, Jamaican athletes participating in the current Olympic games underway in Beijing have not been banned but must submit to these new restrictions within the next two years. Two substances which have been discovered in testing of the Jamaican foods are “yamstenine”, a yam derivative and “cocosterone”, a derivative of the coco plant. These substances have been found to mimic nandrolone and the blood booster EPO, hence the preliminary banning of the substances themselves and the banning of the foods they derive from. This ruling will also affect other Caribbean and some African countries which share similar diets as Jamaicans.

That's a good one. If nothing else, the Malaysian lobby would cry foul (90% of the world's Milo is drunk in Malaysia).

Naturally, some people took this seriously, with one advocating a boycott of the Olympics and another, wait for it, called it "blatant rascism".

Former head of Ren Ci Hospital, Ven Shi Ming Yi, charged in court

"Former head of Ren Ci Hospital, Venerable Shi Ming Yi, has been charged with forgery, conspiracy and misuse of funds.

46—year—old Venerable Ming Yi, who was also the former Ren Ci chairman, was slapped with 10 charges on Tuesday morning.

The monk faces four charges under the Penal Code involving two counts of alleged criminal breach of trust. He also faces one count of forgery for the purpose of cheating, and one count of abetment for allegedly falsifying accounts.

He also faces six charges under the Charities Act for allegedly providing false information over a decade...

The venerable is said to have given false information to the Commissioner of Charities between 1998 and 2008. These included two instances when he allegedly approved million—dollar investments for the charity, but the funds included loans for himself.

The monk is also accused of using S$300,000 to offset an outstanding loan by Mandala Buddhist Cultural Centre, of which he is a partner, and another S$50,000 was allegedly lent to Yeung and a helper at the monasteries.

He was also alleged to have forged minutes of a meeting by asking a staff to write that it was Mandala, and not himself, that owed Ren Ci over S$600,000."

It is the duty of all Singaporeans to condemn attacks made on local charities and voluntary welfare organizations.

If you take a country like Singapore, based on social cohesion, and you look at the charities and voluntary welfare organizations that help maintain it, then conceptually, their probity is important. It means you can be sure that the money that is donated to charities goes to the people who they are supposed to help.

In order to have that – not just as a slogan but in reality – you need honest charities and voluntary welfare organizations that really help their targets and in fact, anyone who needs help. People must have confidence that charities and voluntary welfare organizations are honest and uncorrupt.

In order to make sure that people's confidence in charities and voluntary welfare organizations is not affected, you have to be very, very strict with anyone who attacks charities and voluntary welfare organizations in scurrilous ways or calls into question their honesty.

We are confident that the recent criminal charges pressed against the heads of the two biggest charitable organisations in Singapore have nothing to do with structurally inadequate governance in charities. It was just human error.

It is an honest mistake. Let’s move on.

If he is convicted, does he get stripped of his "Venerable" title?

Racism in Tokyo 東京の人種差別:

"I've always gotten stares, even when I was in the States living there.

And people always stood and look at me.

Well, yeah, people stare.

I'm a black woman - how many of us are there here?"

If only all (or no) cases of alleged racism (especially in Japan) were like that.

"It is of course not difficult for an imaginative person so to conjure up the Person of Christ before himself that the picture shall take a kind of sensuous distinctness... Someone thinks he sees Jesus Himself, and consequently begins to commune with Him. But what such a person communes with in this fashion is not Christ Himself but a picture that the man's own imagination has put together." - Wilhelm Herrmann, The Communion of the Christian with God

Church Group Offers Homosexual New Life In Closet

"A church group offers a homosexual a new life in the closet.

It’s the Onion radio news, I’m Doyle Redland.

Three years ago, born again Christian Dennis Lindaman was a self described homosexual “party slut,” but now thanks to Reclamation Ministries, his homosexual yearnings are safely in the closet, and he’s entered into a tortured loveless marriage to fellow Christian Diane Lindaman.

“Jesus has given me a fresh start. When I lock myself in the bathroom with the light off, crying... for hours on end, I know he’s there watching over me, ready to condemn me to eternal hellfire if I give in to my ferocious unquenchable desire to make love to other men.”

Reclamation Ministries founder Reverend Henry Spotswood says “the closet of the Lord has room enough for even the most vile of homos.”

Doyle Redland, for the Onion Radio News - online at the Onion.com."
