‘We jumped in and threw the dog off of her’: Neighbours save teen from Ontario dog attack - "Global News has agreed to protect the identity of one of the people who helped for fear of retaliation. She said she and her father were sitting in their house when they heard something outside.  “We heard a really loud scream,” she said.  The Good Samaritan leapt into action, along with her father, to help save the teen.  “We see a pit bull on top of this young girl biting her, basically ripping her shoulder blade.”       Police say they responded to the incident on Agnes Street at around 7 p.m. Monday night. Three people were taken to hospital, the teenager was seriously injured. Neighbours said the dog also bit people that were trying to help... “We ended up jumping in really quickly and threw the dog off of her. And that’s when many other neighbours jumped in as well,” said the rescuer.  “The dog ended up breaking loose from the chain and the muzzle … It ended up attacking me, and lacerating my arm in two spots and fracturing my wrists,” said the rescuer."

Killer dogs that mauled hero, 52, to death attacked woman weeks before - "Two killer dogs which mauled to death a well known and respected businessman, 52, had attacked a woman just weeks before after being allowed 'to run free' by their owner to 'terrorise the neighbourhood,' a resident has revealed.  Ian Price, from Stonnall, Staffordshire, was attacked and killed by the two dogs which jumped out of a neighbour's window yards from a primary school. He reportedly died defending his elderly mother from the animals.   The dogs bit him and ripped the clothes from his body leaving him dying in a pool of blood in his boxer shorts in yesterday afternoon's horror attack just feet from his home. Witnesses said the dogs entered Mr Price's mother's garden through a hedge before 'setting' on him in an attack said to have lasted up to 20 minutes... 'The same dogs attacked a middle-aged woman out walking her little dog six weeks to eight or so ago. They should have been taken away from the owner or put down.  'They are killer dogs, ferocious, with huge powerful jaws, and it is such a shame and makes me so angry that it takes someone to be mauled and pass away for action to be taken.'  Matt, a parts supervisor for Merseyside-based Stellantis car plant, told how he had confronted the dog's owner who lives opposite his home after the previous attack on the woman.  Today Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced that XL Bully dogs would be banned before the end of the year - two days after a ten-year-old boy was mauled by an out-of-control animal as he played football... Following Mr Price's devastating death the owner of the XL Bully's 39-year-old Harrison Pettitt has been arrested on suspicion of being in charge of dog's dangerously out of control and more latterly on suspicion of murder... emergency services had rushed to Bentley Drive in Walsall following reports that a 10-year-old boy had been savaged by a dog running free in the street.  The brown canine was captured on CCTV running past Mohammed Sami Raza as he played in the street at around 7.30pm on Wednesday - before suddenly turning and pouncing on him.  In horrific footage released by the family, the boy can be seen struggling for an agonising 30 seconds as the dog tugs at his arm and refuses to let go.  Anguished family members then rush outside, trying to coax the animal away. It is only after more than a minute of being struck that the vicious animal eventually loosens its grip... Ana Paun had been walking home from buying sweets with her sister when the dog leapt up at her from a bus stop on Saturday September 9, before it savaged two men in the forecourt of a nearby petrol station... the Metropolitan Police confirmed it was probing a fresh attack on a four-year-old child involving a 'grey coloured pitbull type dog'.  The animal is said to have bitten the child on the leg during the incident at Hermit Road Park in East London at around 6.18pm on September 11, before turning on the boy's father and attempting to bite him... a man has admitted being in charge of a dangerous dog that killed his brother in an attack in Derby earlier this year.  Gary Stevens' pet fatally attacked 51-year-old Wayne Stevens at a house in Cameron Road, Normanton, Derby, at around 5.50am on April 22.  At a hearing at Derby Crown Court, Stevens, 54, pleaded guilty to a charge under the Dangerous Dogs Act of being the person in charge of a dog dangerously out of control causing injury resulting in death... Campaigners have been calling for a ban on XL Bullies amid claims that they are involved in an increasing number of attacks on people and other animals.  The cross-breed has become the most seized in London, according to official Metropolitan Police data, surpassing other dogs such as German Shepherds, Staffordshire Bull Terriers and pitbulls.  Concurrently, the number of fatal dog attacks in the UK has risen to record levels in recent years.  The breed - a mix of American pitbull terriers crossed with bulldogs - is beloved by a number of celebrities, including rapper Drake, but in the UK are believed to be the work of poor-quality breeding. Dog behaviour expert Stan Rawlinson previously expressed concerns over whether the XL Bully could be banned because it isn't defined as a breed.  He said: 'XL Bully dogs are very reactive. They're like the old Roman dogs of war that attacked Britain and helped forge an empire across the continent.   'More people are going to die unless we do something about it."
Naturally on reddit people were complaining because Tory bad. Apparently banning the dogs is a distraction from more important things like the cost of living and it shows how Tories don't care about climate change because they can move fast on this but not that. Ahh... leftists!

EXCLUSIVE: Owner of two XL Bullys that mauled hero father, 52, to death was spoken to on two more occasions over his out-of-control dogs, police say - "The owner of two XL Bullys that mauled a 52-year-old father to death had been spoken to on several occasions over his out-of-control dogs, according to the police.  Father-of-two Ian Price, from Stonnall, Staffordshire, was killed by the two dogs which jumped out of a neighbour's window yards from a primary school... 'Both dogs were in the address at the time and appeared to be calm. They did not show any signs of aggression towards officers... The breed was linked to six of the 10 fatal dog attacks in the UK in 2022, and has been involved in at least five fatalities this year... The mother of a 10-year-old boy who was mauled to death by an XL Bully said she was lost for words following the announcement.  Emma Whitfield's son Jack Lis died after he was savaged by the animal, called Beast, on 8 November 2021 in Caerphilly.  Brandon Hayden, 19, and Amy Salter, 29, both of the Welsh town, were jailed for four-and-a-half years and three years respectively after being convicted of being in charge of the dangerously out of control dog."

Man who died after double dog attack in Staffordshire named as Ian Price - "This is the seventh death from a dog attack this year, and comes days after footage went viral of an XL bully cross-breed dog attacking people, including an 11-year-old girl, in the street in Birmingham.  In January, a dog walker, Natasha Johnston, 28, was killed when she was attacked by the dogs she was walking in Gravelly Hill, Caterham. Later that month, Alice Stones, four, was killed by her family’s dog in Milton Keynes.  In April, Wayne Stevens, 51, died after being attacked by a dog in Derby and Jonathan Hogg, 37, was killed by a friend’s dog he was looking after."

Yet another day of dog attacks: Video shows man dragged into the road by dog before car tries to ram animal off him as owner watches her beloved King Charles Spaniel get ripped apart and killed by XL Bully after it broke free of 10-year-old girl walking it - "a traumatised mother who watched with horror as her beloved family pet was torn apart by an American Bully XL puppy that broke free from the 10-year-old girl that was walking it. The breed of dog has been behind the majority of fatal dog attacks in the UK since 2021, being responsible for ten out of 14 of the fatal attacks.  Just last week a man was mauled to death by two 'out of control' American Bully dogs that attacked him outside a West Midlands primary school"

The American Bully - Complete Guide & Facts - Animal Corner - "Although thought to be a Pitbull, the American Bully is actually not and was first bred to remove the aggressive traits which can be carried through Pitbull breeds... The American Bully originated in the United States between 1980 and 1990, making them a relatively new breed. They are the result of an American Staffordshire Terrier, American Pitbull Terrier and other Pitbulls"

Considering that all the dogs they come from are considered pitbulls, it's funny we're told they aren't
This suggests that the aggression cannot be bred out of this type of dog

The story itself is from 2019, but I had to show it to you because it's going viral and one must never waste a chance to get people to argue about pit bulls. Dog kills goat while onlookers encourage the attack, Merritt RCMP say - "RCMP in Merritt, B.C., are trying to identify the owners of a goat that was spotted in an online post recently.  Police said on Nov. 24 someone alerted them to an online post where a suspect posted a video of what police called a pitbull “violently attacking a white goat inside a house, where onlookers stood by encouraging the attack.”"

New study identifies most damaging dog bites by breed - "which breed bites the most?... They are, in order: pit bull, mixed breed, German shepherd, terrier, and rottweiler.  The bottom five breeds for bite risk were: dalmatian, pointer, Great Dane, Pekingese, and spitz. To assess bite severity, researchers at Ohio State University’s Wexner Medical Center reviewed 15 years of dog-related facial trauma cases from 240 patients who were treated at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, and the University of Virginia Health System. They focused on wound size, tissue tearing, bone fractures, and other injuries severe enough to call in a facial trauma and reconstructive surgeon.  Researchers also combed the literature from 1970 to the present, searching for papers that reported data on breeds to determine the relative risk of biting from a particular breed. 40 reported bites was the minimum requirement for including a breed in the new study; 43 studies in the literature met that criterion. The researchers combined those results with with hospital data to determine the relative risk of biting and the average tissue damage of those bites.  They also created a damage severity scale...   Pit bulls were responsible for the highest percentage of reported bites across all the studies (22.5%), followed by mixed breeds (21.2%), and German shepherds (17.8%).  Mixed-breed dogs and pit bulls were found to have the highest relative risk of biting, as well as the highest average damage per bite. Breeds such as Great Dane and Akita were found to have a lower relative risk of biting; however, the average damage from these bites was high."

Dog nearly drags man in front of train in savage attack at station - "This is the terrifying moment a man is nearly dragged in front of an approaching train as a huge pitbull-type dog turns on him at a train station.  British Transport Police (BTP) are dealing with the dog attack at Stratford Station, in east London after onlookers said a man offered to hold one of a woman’s two massive dogs to help her adjust a harness on Sunday night.  As he takes the lead the dog jumps up and clamps down on his arm bursting his winter coat and sending feathers spraying into the air... The force said the dog - who was injured during the attack - was Tasered by police and later died while being held in a room by officers.  It will be illegal to own an XL bully from February 1 2024 unless the animal is on an exempt list, called the Index of Exempted Dogs.  The XL bully joins a list of other banned dogs, including the pit bull terrier, Japanese Tosa, fila Brasileiro and dogo Argentino."

Pit Bulls Kill Toddler, Injure Babysitter in Philadelphia's Port Richmond Section - "On Friday, the city Medical Examiner's Office identified the boy who was killed by pit bulls in a rowhouse on Agate Street as Jaevon Torres. The cause of death was determined to be "multiple blunt and penetrating injuries" and the manner of death was ruled accidental. On Wednesday, Jaevon was savagely attacked by three pit bulls in the home while under the care of a babysitter. There were two additional pit bulls in the home that were caged during the attack...   In February, we examined the "Single Dog Shrinking Metric" in fatal dog attacks since the 1980s. From 2005 to 2017, 47% of all deadly attacks involved multiple dogs, up from 30% during the CDC years (1979-1988). Attacks by pit bulls involving more than one dog contributed to 72% of the multi-dog subset. Furthermore, over this 13-year period, 51% of all fatal pit bull attacks (146 of 284) involved more than one dog, vs. 38% (56 of 149) of fatal attacks not involving pit bulls.  In our Discussion Notes post, we also talked about the likelihood of serious injuries or death when more than one pit bull is involved in an attack upon a human. Rather than a simple multiplying effect (i.e., x, x + x = 2x, 2x + x = 3x), increasing the number of pit bulls would be an "exponential effect" (i.e., 1 = x1, 2 = x2, 3 = x3), according to Dr. Peter L. Borchelt, PhD, who testified as an expert witness for the City and County of Denver when it defended its pit bull ban in 2005."

Experts speak about warning signs after 'monster' of a pit bull kills 4-year-old - " A canine attack that left 4-year-old Mia DeRouen dead inside the Houma apartment she shared with her mother has sent shock waves through the community.  The scene from what I understand was pretty horrific, said Houma Police Chief Todd Duplantis.  Investigators say a 130 pound monster of a pit bull, named Niko, mauled the little girl to death while she was watching television with her mother. Her mother, 27-year-old Megan Touchet, was also injured when she tried to rescue her daughter from the dog.  The canine then attacked Houma police officers, who say the dog posed such a threat, they had to shoot it about 12 times to get it to stop charging.   It's shocking, said Duplantis, of a large pit bull being around a small child...   Experts say Niko may have been especially territorial because he was not neutered, and a six-month-old female dog in the home was starting to go into heat."
Mia Derouen's mother refusing to talk to investigators after girl is killed by pit bull - "Niko is said by police to have been aggressively pacing around the apartment when they entered, and even attacked one of the officers.  Counselors have been called in to help even cops hardened through decades of service to get over the traumatic crime scene...  Every one of his posts is filled with dozens of offers of help, condolences and prayers - but he replies to none.  The devastated dad instead wished his dead daughter a happy birthday in one post and pleaded with everyone stop talking about pit bulls in the next...  Claudet said the family had another pit bull."
Investigation into Mia Derouen's death turns up no answers - "Since Mia's death, Touchet and her boyfriend, Kerry Dominique, who the pit bull belonged to, have been unwilling to work with Houma Police in their investigation."

U.S. Fatal Pit Bull Attacks from the Early and Mid 1900s - "DogsBite.org, a national dog bite victims' group dedicated to reducing serious dog attacks, released data showing that pit bulls killed U.S. citizens as early as 1901. Between 1901 and 1947 pet pit bulls and fighting pit bulls killed at least six U.S. citizens, one of which was 2-year old Bert Colby Leadbetter of Lynn, the nephew of John P. Colby, who is the most respected and honored breeder of fighting pit bulls of the 20th century.  The new data questions the frequently voiced claim by pit bull advocacy groups that human aggressive pit bulls were "historically culled" by breeders of fighting pit bulls during this time period. The data also shows that John P. Colby, who is attributed to popularizing the American pit bull terrier to the general public and was the first fighting dog breeder to do so, continued to breed and fight pit bulls long after the death of Bert Colby Leadbetter on February 2, 1909.   The research reveals the name of each fatal attack victim as well: Carrie Cabus (adult woman) of New York City, Carl Limpert (adult man) of New York City, 21-month old Marguerite Theresa Derdenger of Los Angeles, 2-year old Bert Colby Leadbetter of Lynn, 39-year old Doretta Zinke of Miami and 11-year old Stanley Balaban of New York City. The data also uncovered the attack upon 55-year old Julia Cary of Brighton that left her maimed and disfigured for life."

FOR OVER ONE HUNDRED YEARS AMERICANS KNEW PIT BULLS FOR WHAT THEY DID BEST. BABYSITTING.
Addendum: This is no longer available, but it was propagating the nanny dog myth

Are Pit Bulls Dangerous - "A five-year review of dog-bite injuries from the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, published in 2009 in the journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, found that almost 51 percent of the attacks were from pit bulls, almost 9 percent were from Rottweilers and 6 percent were from mixes of those two breeds. In other words, a whopping two-thirds of the hospital's dog-attack injuries involved just two breeds, pit bulls and Rottweilers. Other studies confirm these statistics: A 15-year study published in 2009 in the American Journal of Forensic Medicine and Pathology revealed that pit bulls, Rottweilers and German shepherds were responsible for the majority of fatal dog attacks in the state of Kentucky... there's considerable evidence that owners of pit bulls and other high-risk dogs are themselves high-risk people."
Ahh...stereotypes!

Man whose penis and testicles were eaten by bulldog 'was alone in room with the animal' - "Olde English Bulldogges were bred in the early 1970s in an attempt to recreate the historic Bulldog breed but with a less aggressive temperament. Bulldogs were popular up until the 19th century at the peak of bull baiting and had previously been used by butchers to immobilise the animals so they could be slaughtered. The original Old English Bulldog breed, historically popular for bull baiting, is extinct. They were used for blood sport but declined in number along with the fall in popularity of bull baiting after the Cruelty to Animals Act was passed in 1835. Its modern descendant, the Olde English Bulldogge, was bred in the US in an attempt to recreate the muscular and athletic animals with large lower jaws but without their vicious tendencies or health problems."
"Stereotypes" about a relative of the pit bulls

Pit Bull Advocate Killed By Her Pit Bull - "Her husband, Greg Napora, says the last time he saw 32-year-old Darla Napora was when he was leaving for work. She was sleeping in the bed with their two pit bulls — Gunner, a 2-year-old male and Tazi, a 6-year-old female. When he returned home at around 12, he found Darla laying on the ground covered in blood with Gunner, also covered in blood, hovering near her body... Darla was an avid pit bull lover and supporter of Bay Area Dog lovers Responsible About Pit Bulls, or Bad Rap, a group that tries to change negative attitudes toward pit bulls derived from stories in which pit bulls chew off the face of the pregnant women who raised them.Gunner was not neutered, a fact that some believe played a role in provoking the attack... Greg has forgiven Gunner for taking the life of his wife and his unborn child and is doing everything he can to get Tazi back..“They are the most loving animals I have ever had in my life. Whatever happened right now was not the breeds fault,” he said. In fact, the couple loved the pit bulls so much, Gunner’s ashes will be buried with Darla"

Father of Pregnant Pacifica Woman Killed by Her Pet Pit Bull Writes Letter - "People have said “She was white trash and that she must have abused her dog.” or “She fell off a ladder and the dog didn’t attack -- it only was trying to awaken her.” and “Her husband trained the dog to attack Darla.”"
Cognitive dissonance!

Three children attacked by pit bull as Ontario moves to legalize the breed - "Just one week after legislation was tabled to scrap a controversial dog breed ban in Ontario, a man from Wingham has been charged in connection with pit bull attack that sent three children to the hospital. The Ontario Provincial Police said on November 13, an American Staffordshire Terrier, a banned pit bull breed in Ontario, slipped its collar and immediately ran to a nearby church and private school located on John Street West in Wingham where it began attacking the children. Police referred to the animal as “out of control” and “vicious.”... Information about the dog attack comes at an awkward time for Chatham Kent Leamington MPP Rick Nicholls, who introduced a private member’s bill in the legislature on November 19 to reverse the ban on pit bull-type dogs...   Nicholls added that the amendment has strong support, however, not everyone is happy with the idea of ending the province’s 15-year ban on pit bulls. National Pit Bull Victim Awareness (NPBVA), a coalition of over 70 pit bull victim groups across the U.S. and Canada, has urged the province to keep the breed-specific ban in place. According to the victim advocacy group’s statistics, pit bulls have killed 52 people in Canada and the U.S. since the start of 2018.  Ontario is the only province that has a province-wide ban on pit bulls."

Unfortunately, he was "so severely mauled in the fight" that a decision was made for him to be put down... George received two honors after his death. Brooklinn Khoury Shares Photo of Face Immediately After Being Mauled by Dog - "Brooklinn Khoury is giving her fans a look at the severity of her injuries immediately after she was attacked by a pit bull in 2020... The model was standing in the kitchen when she went to pet her cousin's dog, an 8-year-old blue nose pitbull named Diesel, who she had met many times before."

Medical Studies of Pit Bull Injuries and Deaths in the USA and Canada - National Pit Bull Victim Awareness - "NPBVA lists medical studies published in peer-reviewed medical journals (also known as refereed or scholarly journals). Before publication, each study is scrupulously examined by an anonymous panel of experts. Articles are examined for proper use of research methods, population sampling, significance of the paper’s contribution to the existing literature, and proper integration of previous work on the topic (including citations). In many cases, several re-writes and numerous clarifications are required before a study is accepted for publication. Unlike papers published by organizations, studies published in medical journals are the most authoritative sources of information on a topic."
Addendum: "Medical doctors in the U.S. and Canada are sounding the alarm about pit bulls, calling them a “public health crisis.” From 1989 to 2014 there were 16 peer-reviewed medical studies documenting the impact of pit bulls on our healthcare systems, and since 2015 the pace has quickened, with an additional 25 studies being published. The consensus concludes that compared to attacks by all other types of dogs combined, pit bull attacks are both greater in number, and also vastly disproportionately greater than what the actual breed phenotype population numbers would actually merit. In addition, pit bull attacks cause more damage and death, require more extensive medical intervention and incur substantially higher costs to healthcare systems. Most attacks are unprovoked and unforeseen and therefore unpreventable."

‘Emotional support animal’ mauls 5-year-old girl at Portland airport, $1.1 million lawsuit says - "The mother of a 5-year-old girl mauled in the face by a pit bull at Portland International Airport has filed a $1.1 million lawsuit against the Port of Portland for allegedly letting a dangerous “emotional support animal” into the airport without a carrier."

Pitbull Apologetics

Someone was trying to citation bomb to defend pit bulls, and the citations I could verify were mostly irrelevant, looking at attitudes to or representations of pitbulls rather than whether they were really dangerous.

The closest any of the articles came to making a case for why they weren't dangerous was Pit bull panic by Judy Cohen & John Richardson (2002).

While it was mostly about why the media supposedly misrepresents pitbulls and looks at individual media articles, barely addressed the fact of whether they are actually dangerous and was published in "The Journal of Popular Culture" - not "The Journal of Dog Bites" or something relevant to the subject, it did throw out various lines without explication, which we can take as an attempt to make a case for pitbulls not being dangerous:

"Figure 1
Arguments Supportive of Pit Bulls
• Pit Bulls were not bred to attack people, like some other breeds were; instead they were bred for dog fighting (Sanchez-Beswick 2).
• Pit Bulls were bred to be people friendly because the traditional dog fight had two dogs and no less than three people in the pit (a referee and two handlers). Any dog that bit either handler or the referee was immediately disqualified and usually destroyed (Stratton 34).
• Because Pit Bulls have a high tolerance for pain, they can take rough handling by children and not bite or otherwise become aggressive (Stratton 16).
• At the time that the survey was given, the American Temperament Test Society ranked Pit Bulls fourth highest out of all breeds for reliable good temperament (American Pit Bull Terrier web page). Now that more dogs and more breeds have been tested, both the passing rate and the relative ranking of Pit Bulls have gone down. But their 82.3% passing rate (American Temperance Testing Society 1) is
comparable to (indeed slightly higher than) that of the “All-American Family Dog”, the Golden Retriever (81.9%) (American Temperance Testing Society 4) and is close to (but again actually slightly above) the cumulative average for all dogs of all breeds tested (80.2%) (American Temperance Testing Society 7).
• Pit Bulls are used in therapy programs by animal welfare organizations (Jessup 201).
• People who call Animal Control to complain about their neighbor’s Pit Bulls are usually upset about the neighbor for another reason and are using the Pit Bulls to retaliate (Sanchez-Beswick2).
• The qualities that make a dog a good fighter—intelligence, strength, stamina, agility—also make them good pets (Sanchez-Beswick 3).
• Civil liberties are at stake, because authorities have confiscated Pit Bulls and caused the owner to engage in prolonged legal battles and risk the chance that their dogs would be destroyed (Sanchez-Beswick 2).
• The media, by insisting that Pit Bulls are vicious dogs, have led to a trend where violence-prone people want to own them and are more likely to be looking for dogs who are violent as individuals, so this becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy (Sanchez-Beswick 2).
• Pit Bulls don’t bite more often, but when they do, the media is more likely to publicize the attack. This is partly (but only partly) because the severity of injuries is likely to be greater than with most other dogs (Rowan 9). The only valid way to determine if a breed is more prone to bite is to look at the ratio of bites to the total population (Rowan 4-8; Swift 75). Pit Bull owners are less likely to register their dogs, due to the maverick nature of the breed, thus the total population is likely to be underestimated, and the ratio overestimated.
• Often vicious dogs are identified as Pit Bulls when they are not (Stratton 48). A recent example (January 2001) was the attack in San Francisco by what was later identified as a Presa Canario XBullmastiff Cross. Early print and TV media reports had misidentified the dog as a Pit Bull (personal communication with
people local to the scene on the humans4anti-bsl@yahoogroups.com e-mail list)."

Let us s look at these claims in order:

"• Pit Bulls were not bred to attack people, like some other breeds were; instead they were bred for dog fighting (Sanchez-Beswick 2)."

This isn't really relevant. You don't need to be bred to attack people to be dangerous to people. It is telling that this is an admission that they were bred for fighting - i.e. they are aggressive, even dangerous.

"• Pit Bulls were bred to be people friendly because the traditional dog fight had two dogs and no less than three people in the pit (a referee and two handlers). Any dog that bit either handler or the referee was immediately disqualified and usually destroyed (Stratton 34)."

I can't check what Stratton said, but not biting 3 individuals (probably marked with special clothing) within the context of a dog fight doesn't mean they won't bite humans.

"• Because Pit Bulls have a high tolerance for pain, they can take rough handling by children and not bite or otherwise become aggressive (Stratton 16)."

This is weird, because some pro-pit sites call this a myth. But pain is not the only thing that can set a dog off (not all "threats" cause pain before dogs react to them). And a tolerance for pain means that trying to get an attacking pit to stop is going to be harder.

"• At the time that the survey was given, the American Temperament Test Society ranked Pit Bulls fourth highest out of all breeds for reliable good temperament (American Pit Bull Terrier web page). Now that more dogs and more breeds have been tested, both the passing rate and the relative ranking of Pit Bulls have gone down. But their 82.3% passing rate (American Temperance Testing Society 1) is comparable to (indeed slightly higher than) that of the “All-American Family Dog”, the Golden Retriever (81.9%) (American Temperance Testing Society 4) and is close to (but again actually slightly above) the cumulative average for all dogs of all breeds tested (80.2%) (American Temperance Testing Society 7)."

One should note the methodology behind the ATTS test:

"The dog experiences visual, auditory, and tactile stimuli. Friendly, neutral, and threatening situations are encountered, testing the dog’s ability to handle each appropriately. A dog fails if they show unprovoked aggression, panic without recovery, or strong avoidance. Other dogs are not involved in the test. Participating dogs must be spayed or neutered and at least 18 months old."

Real world results could change due to no spaying, other dogs being involved or pit bulls being uniformly aggressive compared to other breeds (e.g. 13% of American Pit Bull Terriers fail, but maybe all 13% showed unprovoked aggression, vs 14% of Boston Terriers failing, where 4% showed unprovoked aggression, and 5% panicked without recovering and 5% had strong avoidance). And "unprovoked aggression" is all lumped together in one bucket. The unprovoked aggression of a Boston Terrier might be growling, whereas the unprovoked aggression of an American Pit Bull Terrier might be ripping your face off.

"• Pit Bulls are used in therapy programs by animal welfare organizations (Jessup 201)."

There have been quite a few examples of this going wrong, showing why this is not a good idea.

To get more timely information on this, I went through 30 pages of Yahoo search results (Google and DuckDuckGo have both disabled paginated search results, making it very hard to quantify the depth of my search) and the only case I could find of a "therapy dog" attacking people (or indeed anyone)... was an American Bully pit bull mix and one of the victims was "seriously injured with wounds to his face, eye, head and arm". How peculiar. We're always told that it's all about how you raise/train the dog, yet even a trained pit bull attacked a human

"• People who call Animal Control to complain about their neighbor’s Pit Bulls are usually upset about the neighbor for another reason and are using the Pit Bulls to retaliate (Sanchez-Beswick2)."

This is irrelevant. Calling animal control doesn't make a dog attack humans or other dogs unprovoked..

"• The qualities that make a dog a good fighter—intelligence, strength, stamina, agility—also make them good pets (Sanchez-Beswick 3)."

This is just reaching. Even if they're good pets, 3 out of 4 of those attributes make them more dangerous when they act up.

"• Civil liberties are at stake, because authorities have confiscated Pit Bulls and caused the owner to engage in prolonged legal battles and risk the chance that their dogs would be destroyed (Sanchez-Beswick 2)."

???

If I have a nuclear bomb at home and authorities confiscate it, I might be pissed off but to call this a danger to civil liberties is ridiculous.

"• The media, by insisting that Pit Bulls are vicious dogs, have led to a trend where violence-prone people want to own them and are more likely to be looking for dogs who are violent as individuals, so this becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy (Sanchez-Beswick 2)."

Ah. The "self-fulfilling prophecy". But this is irrelevant, because it doesn't change the fact that the pits out there are dangerous. In fact it embraces it. People don't care why pitbulls are dangerous - just that they are. So this actually provides more justifications to ban pits.

"• Pit Bulls don’t bite more often, but when they do, the media is more likely to publicize the attack. This is partly (but only partly) because the severity of injuries is likely to be greater than with most other dogs (Rowan 9). The only valid way to determine if a breed is more prone to bite is to look at the ratio of bites to the total population (Rowan 4-8; Swift 75). Pit Bull owners are less likely to register their dogs, due to the maverick nature of the breed, thus the total population is likely to be underestimated, and the ratio overestimated."

This pro-pit site claims 32% of dogs put in shelters are pitbulls. Given the usual spiel about "stereotypes",. this would be an upper bound on the proportion of dogs that are pits.

Meanwhile, Politifact finds 3 estimates of the pitbull population from various shelters, which go from 13-23%, so these estimates are other upper bounds on the pit population.

Yet 72% of fatal dog attacks in the US in 2018 were from pits, which makes them massively over-represented.

And pitbulls are consistently one of the top dogs responsible for serious injuries, and in recent years they are the top (The United Kennel Club and the American Dog Breeders Association refused to provide data on pit bulls, which is telling)

"• Often vicious dogs are identified as Pit Bulls when they are not (Stratton 48). A recent example (January 2001) was the attack in San Francisco by what was later identified as a Presa Canario XBullmastiff Cross. Early print and TV media reports had misidentified the dog as a Pit Bull (personal communication with people local to the scene on the humans4anti-bsl@yahoogroups.com e-mail list)."

Wow. One anecdote.

Anyway, this cuts both ways. We don't have evidence of massive systemic misidentification in a way that would make pits look bad. i.e. You can't claim the aggressive dogs identified as pit bulls were not really pit bulls, but the aggressive dogs not identified as pit bulls were definitely not pit bulls. And the same goes for the proportion of pit bulls in the population (on the claim of their not being over-represented).

Even if misidentification really were a factor, would this alone account for the massive over-representation of pitbulls in the fatal / severe dog attack statistics?

"was brutally killed by her family pit bull"
"Porsche Nicole Cartee, 25-years old, was brutally killed by her family pit bull. The male dog, named Spike, had been with the family for 10-years. On August 22, the pit bull "just snapped" and began attacking Nicole's mother, according to authorities. When Nicole tried to rescue her mother, the pit bull turned on her, killing her. The dog also attacked Nicole's sister who was in the home. Nicole was dead when first responders arrived. Animal control director Jamie Nelson described the scene as "horrific." Nicole's mother was hospitalized with serious injuries; her sister was treated on scene. Patrick Powell, Nicole's boyfriend of 10-years, said the two had recently separated, but were planning on reuniting. Powell said the dog had a history of violence; it had attacked Nicole's mother two months earlier. The mother, however, blamed the incident on a stray dog, Powell said. A male cousin confirmed the previous attack to the media, but said the injuries were minor. Authorities found no previous attacks on record."
Clearly the owner's fault for being abusive and not loving the dog enough

Meme - "I would name it as one of the top tragedies of my life. While I was on vacation overseas I had 3 separate people taking turns throughout the day checking on my dogs, taking care of them and playing with them while I was gone. I thought it was the safest option and the best for my fur babies. 2 days ago I found out the dogs broke through the gate barrier in the house and got into a fight over what we suspect was a stray can of catfood. They were only alone for a couple of hours.. that's all it took and one of my fur babies (white one) killed the smaller black one.. I feel more pain right now than I have been in a while... Worse still is I have a decision before me regarding luna (the white one). I have contacted trained professionals for advice and they are willing to evaluate her but I still don't know what I am going to do..."

Meme - "You love n Rescued both. ..because they needed homes...Alot of us have n are doing the same because there's so many Pitts needing homes because of Humans not worthy of their love. I fell in love with this breed but I know they are jealous dogs but cuddling couch potatoes as well. Forgive Yourself n Luna, maybe an EXPERIENCED Trainor that has Dealt with Pitts Exclusively can help. You've Sadly lost one...! don't think putting Luna down is necessary."

Meme - "My pitties have all fought with each other to various degrees. No fatalities, but definitely trips to the vet were required. We have many gates and every time there was a fight, it was human error. l.e. feeding treats together, leaving gates open, and favorite toys left unattended. Euthanasia never crossed my mind. Ever. They are animals and certain behaviors are inherently dangerous. Only you have to live with your decision, as I have with mine..."

Meme - "I'm So heartbroken for you n I'm dealing with my latest Rescued Pitt off side of a busy road that has attacked my older Dearly Loved Pitt over jealousy. If I wasn't here every time I would have most likely come home to same. She plays with my Doberman but backs down when challenged . Had they ever fought before this? I've cried n struggled with a solution n can absolutely imagine your grief. Give yourself some time to think thru this grief. Pitts are Velcro dogs that crave love n give love but there's something about them when triggered n fight its like a "switch" Throwing Water on mine works but my older Pitt is no match . Praying for healing."

Meme - "The same kinda thing happened except it was a friend watching my pittie and she fed her dog and my dog together and they fought bad her dog ended up passing away she called the police and animal control ugh it was heartbreaking I went back and forth for 10 months to court to get him back while he sat in an animal shelter as if he was a person in jail, ugh it would break my heart when I would go see him and he would have lil tears in his eyes it wasn't until they started letting me go in the kennel and take him in to the yard that I realized the courts already made up their mind. They put him down. Without even telling me, as morbid as it is me and my mom wanted his paw print and to get him cremated and all I got was a letter in the mail I miss him every day I still blame myself. Even if it was human error he shouldve been with me, hed still be here Even with the whole shelter advocating for him they counted him out because of his breed. I'm so sorry this happened to loose any of our fur babies is terrible and in that matter....but don't loose both of them. Get Luna some training and keep her as a only doggo."

Meme - "This happened with us. Our girls..played, walked and slept together, for two years. It was a dream come true...they were besties, until they weren't and it was over a treat. We were traveling with them... we were there and had to pull them apart... bleeding... us and them... ended up in the ER from a bite (unintentional by them) We made the trek home. We tried everything from training and time apart... nothing worked. We had to rehome our younger girl (Dalmatian) for the safety of both. Thankfully, we found someone we knew to take her in. We miss her deeply. lam sharing this with you, Because it could have happened with you there. It's heart breaking. Blessings to you and your Pup."

Humans Can’t Quit a Basic Myth About Dog Breeds - The Atlantic - "According to Morrill’s team, breed explains just a small fraction of the mind-boggling variation in behavior seen in the species that is dog—less than 10 percent. Which is to say, most of the mishmash can be attributed to something else. That might seem like too small a proportion to some; other, older studies, which analyzed their own data somewhat differently, have made higher estimates... While friendly dogs are considered desirable, the stereotype pendulum swings the opposite way with aggression, a murky label that some behaviorists dislike and yet is often inappropriately pasted onto dogs who then end up banned from housing complexes, abandoned in shelters, even euthanized based on breed alone. Dogs who fall into the pit-bull category are a famous, and particularly controversial, example of this: Bred to fight other animals, they’ve acquired a reputation for violence and unpredictability, a stigma worsened, scholars have argued, by racism against America’s urban Black and Latino communities, to which the dogs were culturally linked in the mid-20th century. Some experts argue that caution around pit bulls is warranted, given their history; people who look at pictures of the dogs tend to rate them unfavorably. And yet, studies done by Alvarez, Zapata, and others have found that pit bulls don’t seem to be more aggressive or volatile than other dogs. If any dogs are a bit more apt to react when provoked, Alvarez told me, it might be the shrimpy ones—Chihuahuas, dachshunds, and so on—perhaps because their teenier brains have a harder time reining in impulsive behaviors … or because they’re just smaller dogs, constantly being loomed over, picked up, or accidentally kicked."
Apparently it's racist to blame the owners. Oops

College student who was disfigured in vicious attack by dogs reveals her face - "A Texas college student who was left “catastrophically” disfigured from a dog attack was bitten more than 800 times and lost almost 30 percent of her blood — as terrifying bodycam footage shows cops struggling to get the beasts under control.  Jacqueline Durand, a student at the University of Texas at Dallas, was mauled a day before her 22nd birthday in December when she showed up at the home of Dr. Justin Bishop and his wife, Ashley, to walk their two dogs.  But when she opened the door, the animals — a German shepherd mixed-breed named Lucy and a pit bull mixed-breed named Bender — pounced on her and pinned her down... The couple told investigators the dogs came from rescue organizations and that they hadn’t had any problems with them. But the lawsuit includes a photo of an “ominous sign” on the couple’s front door that states: “Crazy Dogs. Please Don’t Knock or Ring the Bell. Call or Text Instead.”  Durand’s attorney, Chip Brooker, told CBS News that the sign “suggests that the Bishops knew that both of these dogs had acted aggressively to people arriving at the front door.”"

Portland pastry chef mauled by off-leash dog, dog's handler promptly ODs on fentanyl - "Cheryl Wakerhauser owns Pix Patisserie. She says she was out on a run along Southeast Hawthorne Boulevard when she was attacked and mauled by a dog.  She reports the dog was off leash in a parking lot of a vacant building that’s surrounded by a chain-link fence.  The dog grabbed her leg and threw her to the ground, and attacked her legs and arm. Wakerhauser says she has more than 35 puncture wounds... Wakerhauser says the dog was taken away by animal control. The dog is a pitbull named "Bubbie," as confirmed by police... Police say the suspect, identified as houseless individual Theron D. Bates, had handed the dog over to police and then tried to run away.  However, Bates then ingested fentanyl shortly afterward and overdosed."

Olivia Quast's nose ripped off by boyfriend's pitbull mix - "A Connecticut artist had her nose bitten off by her boyfriend’s pit bull mix rescue when the pooch got spooked by her teeth-whitening device.  Olivia Quast, 30, from Thomaston, suffered horrific injuries to her face and arm during the Feb. 3 incident involving her boyfriend Graeme Stasyshyn’s 6-year-old dog, Bentley, which he’s had for four years... the dog then continued attacking her, leaving her left arm mangled before she could fight the animal off and call for help.  Quast speculated that Bentley, who was abused as a puppy, might have been startled and provoked by her teeth-whitening mouth guard equipped with a UV light... the woman said the dog’s eyes “changed” and described the animal as “dissociated.” The artist said of herself that she used to be a “cat person” who never liked dogs until she moved in with her 44-year-old boyfriend and his pointer, pitbull and bulldog mix, which became the first dog she “ever loved.”  Quast stressed that she had a good relationship with Bentley and would snuggle with the pooch in her bed, so when the canine attacked her last month, it came as a “total shock.”... As a result of the illness, the woman dislocates her joints on a daily basis, has received stitches more than 80 times and lives with chronic pain.  In the wake of the brutal attack, Quast and her boyfriend had Bentley humanely euthanized, after treating the dog to a bacon, egg and cheese sandwich and letting it play with stuffed animals while listening to classical music"

Dog breed genetics may affect traits like aggression and fearfulness - "Your dog’s ability to learn new tricks may be less a product of your extensive training than their underlying genetics.  Among 101 dog breeds, scientists found that certain behavioral traits such as trainability or aggression were more likely to be shared by genetically similar breeds. While past studies have looked into the genetic underpinnings of dog behaviors for certain breeds, this research — published October 1 in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B — is the first to investigate a wide swath of breed diversity and find a strong genetic signal.  “Anecdotally, everyone knows that different dogs have different behavioral traits,” says Noah Snyder-Mackler, a geneticist at the University of Washington in Seattle. “But we didn’t know how much or why.”...   Using data from over 14,000 dogs described in C-BARQ, the researchers gave each breed a score for 14 different behaviors, and then searched for overall genetic similarities among breeds that had similar scores. For traits such as aggression toward strangers, trainability and chasing, the researchers found that genes contribute 60 to 70 percent of behavioral variation among breeds. Poodles and border collies, for example, had higher trainability scores, while Chihuahuas and dachshunds had higher aggression toward strangers."

2018 Dog Bite Fatality: Woman Dies After Being Attacked by a Pack of Dogs Near Ardmore, Oklahoma - "inaccurate headlines about this fatal dog mauling went viral. Here are the themes: sausage dogs maul and weiner dogs attack. The media went viral around the world, not restricted to the United States. This is despite a statement by a veterinarian disputing it, who had examined these dogs while alive, the best way to determine breed identification. Dr. Douglas Aldridge stated, "The dogs appear to me to be a pit bull and 4 pit-bull mix puppies."  Two employees at the Ardmore Animal Shelter -- who received the dogs dead, never examined them alive -- are responsible for deliberately mislabeling six of the dogs as predominantly "dachshund." Vet technician Amanda Dinwiddie, whose husband has bred and sold pit bulls in the past, and shelter co-director Tena Layton, an owner of multiple pit bulls, are 100% responsible for misleading the sheriff, media and public about the breeds involved in this deadly attack.  What is a mystery to us is why Layton ever supplied photographs of the dogs to the public? Because one of those images "clearly" identifies the largest dog as a pit bull."
This pit lover kept spamming the story about a pack of 7 dachshunds killing someone to "prove" that pitbulls weren't more dangerous. So much for that lie (even if it were true, clearly this means 1 dachshund would be as deadly as 1 pit)

Police body cam shows dog shot, killed after vicious attack of owner - "Officers in Richland County saved a Shelby resident, who was attacked by his pit bull on Saturday night.  The Shelby Police Department received a 9-1-1 call about a reported dog attack on Joelynn Drive, where upon their arrival they saw the dog biting his owner's arm in the back room of the home.  One officer (John Reed) used his Taser on the dog to give the owner enough time to break free and get out of the room. The two officers tried to contain the dog in the bedroom, but weren't able to do so, because the door couldn't close due to renovations. Once the officer stopped using the TASER, police said the dog recovered and began charging toward the door. The second officer (Cody Baker) then fired two rounds, which both struck and killed the dog instantly."

1) they're the cheapest and def the most abundant breed you can buy off marketplace or Craigslist. Most aren't even pure, but everyone and their cousins brother "breeds" them. So ppl get them bc they're cheap and don't look like a mutt.
2) women like the stigma of owning an "agrressive breed" that's nothing but what they call a "big baby." It makes them feel some type of way having dominion over a "breed" with a bad reputation that they can control. Kinda screams out narcissistic energy."

Man who died at house in Oldham was 'mauled' by his dog while suffering a medical episode, inquest hears - "A man who died at a house in Oldham was 'mauled' by his dog after he collapsed from a medical episode, an inquest has heard.  Jonathan Halstead, 35, was found dead at a house on Duckworth Street in Shaw... Mr Halstead's dad heard a thud coming from one of the bedrooms.  "He went straight to the bedroom to find the dog mauling his son""

TOLEDO, Ohio - A 57-year-old woman has died after she was attacked by her own dog in her backyard, reports say. Police tell WTOL Channel 11 that Bonnie Varnes was found in the yard "severely mutilated and unconscious." Varies was taken to a hospital but she died of her injuries."

Meme - "These Stumpline pups (my line, but not on my yard) have not only killed three littermates, but ate em down to the head...these are 9 week old pups...do y'all STILL THINK IT'S HOW YOU RAISE THEM?! This is that predisposition to dog aggression we've been preaching about...it is GENETICS...it has absolutely nothing to do with how you raise em...they have two automatic feeders full of food in there, which you can see in the background...they were just BORN SAVAGE! Stop thinking you can LOVE THE GENETICS out of these dogs! It ain't happening!"

Meme - "Was it the pitbull's fault?
Was it raised right?
Was it being agitated?

Did the victim breathe?

It's not the pitbull's fault"

2022 Fatal Dog Attack Breed Identification Photographs - "In 2013, we began the tradition of publishing breed identification photographs of fatally attacking dogs when available through news reports, animal control agencies, police departments, social media and public information requests. Of the 54 dog bite fatalities recorded in 2022, 44% (24) had some form of an identification photograph. Our nonprofit was responsible for capturing 75% of them. Pit bulls and their mixes represent 63% of images collected in 2022."
Clearly, "stigma" and "stereotyping" means photos of pit bulls involved in fatal attacks are more likely to be released than for other breeds

Pit Bulls: Facts and Figures - "There are approximately 4.5 million pit bulls in the United States, making up approximately 5.8% of the country's canine population...  From February 2013 to the present, animal control agencies and health departments in 19 U.S. states report that pit bulls are leading all breeds in biting incidents...  From 2011 to 2019, 14 peer-reviewed retrospective medical studies from Level 1 trauma centers spanning all major geographical regions in the United States -- Northeast, Southeast, South, Southwest, Midwest, West Coast, and Northwest -- all report similar findings: pit bulls are inflicting a higher prevalence of injuries than all other breeds of dogs. The majority of these studies (12 of 14) also report that pit bulls are inflicting the most severe injuries, requiring a higher number of operative interventions -- up to five times higher -- than other dog breeds...  Studies by health care providers establish that pit bull attacks are associated with higher median Injury Severity Scale scores, a higher number of hospital admissions, higher hospital charges, and a higher risk of death...  Another study authored entirely by physicians concludes that injuries from pit bulls are both more frequent and more severe...    Similarly, an additional study found that pit bulls inflict "more complex wounds, were often unprovoked, and went off property to attack" and that "[t]he probability of a bite resulting in a complex wound was 4.4 times higher for pit bulls compared with the other top-biting breeds."...  In 2021, of the 51 Americans killed by dogs, 37 were killed by one or more pit bulls and their mixes (in some cases in combination with one or more other breeds), and 21 of those victims were either the owner of the pit bull or member of the owner's family. The eruscide rate was 57%."
Pit bull defenders love to claim that pit bull attack numbers are unreliable because people misidentify pit bulls. But if that's the case, pit bull identification in general (for breed prevalence) would also be off, which would at least partially cancel out the effect but still leave them overrepresented. Also the inaccuracy of pitbull identification cannot account for the massive overrepresentation of them in attack and fatal attack numbers

Meme - Valerie Lynn Hampton: "March 12. This is so funny! This is exactly how it is with Maggie and Max vs my pit bull Kali. Pits aren't as scary as their rep!"
A FEW WEEKS LATER....Valerie Lynn Hampton: "Yesterday was a hard day on the farm, a day full of death and sadness. Had 8 dead baby bunnies, a dead baby chick that hens were fighting over, and Kali attacked Maggie. Maggie has pit bull puncture wounds on her neck and hind end with trouble walking. I tried to get Kali to release her from her jaws and Kali bit onto my arm for a Split second until She realized it was me then went back to attacking Maggie. I then had to use my foot to separate them. Needless to say, Dah*** and Josh said Kali MUST GO! I love that dog so much but she is way too possessive over me. She tried to attack Jaxson a couple weeks ago when I was hugging him. I hate to see her be put down so would love someone to offer her a new home. If your interested, contact me. She is about a year old, a blue nosed rescue pit, and is a very possessive and protective dog with a good heart, but some quirks. Thanks"

U.S. Statistics on Dog Bites 2021 (19 Breeds Compared) - "German Shepherds are regarded for their intelligence, Labradors for their sense of smell and St. Bernards for their size. One notorious breed known for its violent tendencies is the Pitbull... According to Canine Journal, an organization that collects and analyzes all dog bite attacks in the country, Pit Bulls accounted for 284 deaths in those years. That's a staggering 65% of all dog-related deaths, with 473 Americans killed between 2005 and 2017... Instead of arguing that Pit Bulls bite more, you could argue that they are more efficient once they attack. Whereas a bite from a smaller dog may not be fatal... German Shepards are the third most likely breed of dog to attack. However, their mortality statistics are more a result of helping humans then harming them. As mentioned above, Rottweilers and Pit Bulls are the second and first most dangerous breeds... Statistically speaking, there are two breeds of dogs that are known for their safety. Golden Retrievers and Labrador Retrievers are the breeds least likely to bite or inflict harm on a human. Keep in mind that these dogs are used for hunting. Their soft teeth are not intended to penetrate the birds they catch. By that logic, their teeth would barely penetrate human skin. Bird dogs understand that their bite is not to be fatal, so they almost never even try unless indicated by danger. Retrievers are also among the friendliest and most sociable breeds for human companionship and work-related associations...
Common Characteristics of Dangerous Breeds
Strong musculature, powerful appearance, robust, athletic configuration, agility, vigor and endurance.
Marked character and great courage.
Short hair
Thoracic perimeter between 60 and 80 centimeters, height and width between 50 and 70 centimeters and weight over 20 kg.
Voluminous head, cuboid, robust, with broad and large skull and muscular and bulging cheeks. Large and strong jaws, robust, wide and deep mouth.
Wide, muscular and short neck.
Chest solid, broad, large, deep, arched ribs and short muscular back.
Parallel, straight and robust forelegs and very muscular hindquarters, with relatively long legs forming a moderate angle...
It appears on the PPP (Perros Potencialmente Peligrosos i.e Potentially Dangerous Dogs) list... Pit Bulls account for 6% of dogs in the United States. What is most striking about their attacks is that they attack children and adults alike when, in general, attacks on children are more common because they do not know how to treat dogs or how to read the warning signs. Another striking feature of the attacks is that many of the attacks are unannounced, with no warning signs... German Shepherd... do not appear as PDD and have a very good reputation, especially because they are excellent police assistants. Their protective character often leads them to hurt, with serious consequences, but never with the intention of doing so. We must not forget that they are guard dogs, they need to have their “flock” under control and not knowing how to read their language can lead to unfortunate incidents... the Hybrid Wolfdog is hardly present in the United States. Even so, it ranks in the U.S. statistics on dog bites"

The New Pike County Humane Society | Facebook - "It is with the heaviest of hearts, we must share the sad news that Sparta-Kisses was euthanized.  We want to thank everyone again that donated for his surgery, his foster during his initial recovery, and we whole heartedly thank you for always being supportive of Pike County Humane Society even during these sad times.  Most have followed Sparta’s' story, from severely injured stray, to recovering tripod. When Sparta returned to the shelter, he had one favorite person at the shelter but loved everyone else too. In his few weeks here, he slowly began showing extreme aggression, literally out of the blue, towards staff members. With each week that passed, it became evident that Sparta could not be handled by anyone except "his person" here at the shelter. Ok, so Sparta needs to be a one-person dog, we can find that person, right?  This past week, we received an email from someone that knew where Sparta came from. This email told a story of how Sparta had viciously attacked his previous owner, had him locked in a room and was aggressively trying to get into the room.  At first, we didn't believe this could be our Sparta. We asked for any further details, and when this person responded that the previous owner had to shoot the dog with his shotgun to stop the attack, it was then we knew that it was, in fact, our Sparta! If you remember, x-rays showed pellets in Sparta’s chest....  In the following days, Sparta's aggression towards everyone worsened. He had now turned on the only person who could handle him at the shelter. Now knowing his history, and seeing this same behavior with our own eyes, the decision was made that Sparta would be a danger to shelter staff, visitors, the public, and especially to any adopter who potentially wanted to take a chance on him. We could not, with a clear conscience, send this dog into any household, knowing that he is capable of turning in an instant, and even though he only had 3 legs, Sparta was capable of doing a lot of damage, even causing death to any person.  The decision was made to euthanize. Sparta was surrounded by staff members that truly loved him. After being sedated, he was hugged, kissed, and pet until his last breath. Tears streamed, hearts broke, Sparta went over the Rainbow Bridge in peace and love.  💔💔 RIP SPARTA-KISSES 💔💔"
Imagine this level of angst over euthanising a vicious dog. Naturally it's the previous dog owner's fault

KFC Victoria Wilcher: Why Do So Many Pit Bulls Maul Children? (aka The Problem With Pit Bulls) - "Pit bulls make up only 6% of the dog population, but they’re responsible for 68% of dog attacks and 52% of dog-related deaths since 1982, according to research compiled by Merritt Clifton, editor of Animals 24-7, an animal-news organization that focuses on humane work and animal-cruelty prevention.  Clifton himself has been twice attacked by dogs (one pit bull), and part of his work involves logging fatal and disfiguring attacks. Clifton says that for the 32 years he’s been recording, there has never been a year when pit bulls have accounted for less than half of all attacks. A CDC report on dog-bite fatalities from 1978 to 1998 confirms that pit bulls are responsible for more deaths than any other breed, but the CDC no longer collects breed-specific information. Another report published in the April 2011 issue of Annals of Surgery found that one person is killed by a pit bull every 14 days, two people are injured by a pit bull every day, and young children are especially at risk. The report concludes that “these breeds should be regulated in the same way in which other dangerous species, such as leopards, are regulated.” That report was shared with TIME by PETA, the world’s largest animal-rights organization...   As pit-bull attacks become more and more common, they’re getting increasing attention on social media, but not always in support of the wounded children. In March, a Facebook petition to save Mickey, a dangerous pit bull in Phoenix, got over 70,000 likes. Mickey was facing euthanasia for mauling 4-year-old Kevin Vincente so badly that he cracked his jaw, eye socket and cheekbone. Kevin is facing months of reconstructive surgery, but more people were concerned with saving the dog than helping the boy. Mickey’s Facebook page has now become a social-media landing page to save other dogs that are considered dangerous. Clifton says he’s seen an unprecedented rise in dog maulings in recent years, as more pit bulls enter the shelter system. Between 1858 and 2000, there are only two recorded instances of shelter dogs killing humans. From 2000 to 2009, there were three fatal attacks involving shelter dogs (one pit bull, one breed similar to a pit bull, and one Doberman). But from 2010 to 2014, there have been 35 shelter dogs who fatally attacked humans. All but 11 were pit bulls... critics say that pit bulls are inherently dangerous no matter how they’re treated, because violence is in their DNA. “Why do herding dogs herd? Why do pointing dogs point? They don’t learn that behavior, that’s selective behavior,” says Colleen Lynn, president and founder of DogsBite.org, a national dog-bite-victims group dedicated to reducing dog attacks. “Pit bulls were specifically bred to go into that pit with incredible aggression and fight.”  “Every kind of dog is neglected and abused,” Clifton agrees. “And not every kind of dog responds to the neglect and abuse by killing and injuring people.”...   Even PETA, the largest animal-rights organization in the world, supports breed-specific sterilization for pit bulls"

Pit bull tears off 4-year-old Oklahoma boy Axel Foster's arm - "A 4-year-old Oklahoma boy had an arm completely ripped off by a pit bull while trying to pet some puppies at his grandparents’ home...   “When officers and animal control attempted to retrieve the arm, the dog became aggressive to them”...   Foster’s mom, Destiny McDow, said they “raced to the hospital,” but surgery to reattach her son’s arm was unsuccessful. She’d earlier said in an online fundraiser that the boy was “fighting not only to keep his arm but his life.”"

I slept with my beloved pit bull until he tried to eat me alive - "A woman who slept with her dog was almost eaten alive when the canine snapped and devoured “half her arm.”  Tya Lucas, 41, was at home in Lewisville, Texas, introducing her new puppy, Roo, to her friend Peter, 33, on May 16 when her nearly 100-pound pit bull, Hercules, violently turned on her...   The dog tore off two-thirds of Tya’s right arm, ate her bicep and sank its teeth into her leg and foot... “The police said if I’d passed out in the house, he would have eaten me from my insides,” Tya said. “They said they’d seen stabbings, gunshot wounds and they’ve never seen what they saw that day.”  “They put a tourniquet on my arm and the doctor said if he hadn’t been there to do that at that exact moment, then I wouldn’t have made it until the ambulance got there.”   Tana and Harley had found Hercules abandoned at the side of the road, covered in cigarette burns, two years earlier.  But Tya says Hercules had never shown signs of aggression before and even slept in bed with her the night before the attack...   Tya and Tana surrendered Hercules to police at the scene and he was put down soon after. They have no idea what triggered the aggression but Tya has been left terrified of dogs...   Pit bulls make up only 6% of the dog population, but they’re responsible for 68% of dog attacks and 52% of dog-related deaths since 1982"
Obviously her fault. She must have abused it for only a puppy to turn on her
Even if the pitmummies want to blame this on prior abuse, apparently the conclusion is that all abused pitbulls need to be put down

Addendum: Clearly she was abusive. I bet sleeping with it was a euphemism for abusing it

Dog sitter, 46, is mauled to death by two pit bulls she was looking after at her home - "Mom of five from North Carolina, 46, was mauled to death in a brutal attack at her own home by a pair of pit bulls she was dog sitting.  Trena Peed, who recently lost two sons in car crashes two years apart, was letting her dogs out early on Thursday at 2am when they dragged her out with them into the backyard.  The neighbors reported hearing screams that same night.  'It’s dark. All I hear is her yelling and her dogs over there attacking her'
Clearly this means nothing, since chihuahuas are more aggressive than pits (weird how breed doesn't mean anything, yet pitmummies always make that claim)

You can't separate pit bull prejudice from racial prejudice - "Those who speak of innate pit bull violence are thus showing a fundamental misunderstanding of the nature of all domesticated dogs, any of which can turn violent under the right (or in this case, wrong) circumstances.  But it also shows something else. In Baltimore, like many other places, pit bulls are associated with dog fighting and black, urban violence. To say otherwise is dishonest, and the fact that pit bulls are singled out when bigger more powerful dogs like Rottweilers are not to me is clear evidences that some sort of bias is in play. Using the well documented notion of institutional racial bias in the legal system, this implicates the court's claim that pit bulls are "inherently violent." Empirical data shows the race of the defendant has an impact on judicial rulings, creating harsher judgments and sentences, and if the owner of the pit bull is black, as overwhelming anecdotal evidence would indicate, then the legal system would view the nature of the pit bull attacks quite differently than they view other incidents. Over time, it seems that "pit bull' has becomes a synonym for "black" and thus a similar bias seems to be at play here. As a black person raised in Baltimore, pit bulls were a central part of the social fabric of my life. The best dog I ever had was a pit bull, and he was the sweetest thing I have ever met. I am confident that if you were to ask the vast majority of pit bull owners in this city, they will tell you the same thing. For black folks like me who grew up with them, we love them because when we were born into a violent world not of our choosing, they protected us, with violence when necessary, but more often they showed the love that let us know they would only use that so called "innate" potential for violence in extreme circumstances... Even if the court saw pit bull attacks caused more damage and happened at a higher rate than other breeds, this a correlation/causation logical fallacy. People who experience violence and poverty disproportionately fight/abuse dogs, and the dogs those people have access to are pit bulls, so of course this correlation would be observed, but that does not mean there is some hidden "mean gene" that caused these outcomes."
Of course. How could one forget the race card?
I like how empirical data about how overrepresented pit bulls are in attacks mean nothing
If we can't even blame owners ("it's all in how you train them"), we move to the next level of cope where we pretend that pit bulls are only overrepresented in attacks because of "stigma"

The Black Man's Dog: The Social Context of Breed Specific Legislation - "Strong cultural ties exist between pit bull dogs and the Black community. The same is true of the Latino community. Research undertaken here to investigate this claim suggests that people of color are perceived to be the most likely owner of this breed of dog... Under new law, breed-specific legislation could be challenged under the Fair Housing Act if it can be shown that these laws are disproportionately excluding minority groups."

2022 Double Dog Bite Fatality: Pair of Family Pit Bulls Kill Two Children, Seriously Injure Mother in Tennessee - "On October 5, a pair of pit bulls a young family had owned for eight years fatally attacked their two children in the home, 5-month old Hollace Bennard and 2-year old Lilly Bennard. The mother, Kirstie Bennard, 30, was critically injured from trying to save her children. She remains hospitalized. Both pit bulls, a male and female pair, Cheech and Mia respectively, were confiscated by Memphis Animal Services and euthanized a day after killing the children... On Perry's 2013 thread advertising puppies from the breeding of RGB Jefe Son RGB Mulatto AKA Chunk to RGB King Lion Daughter RGB Circe, Perry speaks directly to the father of the children, Colby Bennard... The horrific tragedy of two innocent children killed by a pair of designer pit bulls, known interchangeably as XL pit bulls or XL bullies, is further marred by their parents who purchased dogs advertised as #LionsOnLeashes, #Monster or worse"

Addendum: Obviously expressing love for pitbulls means he was a shitty owner

Pit bulls who mauled baby boy and his two year-old sister to death had NEVER been aggressive - "Kelsey Canfield, Bennard's best friend, told Fox News that the dogs had never shown any signs of violence and if they had, 'she would have never had those dogs near her kids.'... Jeff Gibson, the uncle to Bennard's husband, Colby, revealed the mother-of-two has an 'uncountable amount of stitches and bite marks over her entire body, including her face' and that both her 'arms and legs are bandaged/wrapped up completely.'... Pit bulls are known for having one of the strongest bites, alongside Mastiffs and Rottweilers, according to the Canine Journal.   The breed is also on the journal's list of dogs that bite the most, alongside Chihuahuas, German Shepherds and Cocker Spaniels."
Some pit bull lover claimed that all stories of pit bull attacks revealed that the owners were abusers, and when I said I had read many stories to the contrary, he sarcastically agreed and then blocked me, so I wouldn't be able to provide any examples to falsify his ridiculous claim

Pit Bull Described as 'Mild-Mannered' Brutally Kills Female Owner During a Walk in the Province of Nova Scotia - "a commenter left a link showing when Megan Milner purchased her two pit bulls -- less than four years later, one brutally kills her while she was taking it for a walk... Martin also claimed that people should, "Challenge the conversation with facts." In this case, the facts are clear. Milner was killed by one of her pit bulls, while taking the dog for a walk. Milner was a conscientious owner who would only walk her dogs one at a time outside of the village, and while armed with a sturdy muzzle. On June 9, one of her pit bulls brutally attacked her and left her dead in a ditch. Those are the grim facts, according to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.  Like the attractive female pit bull advocates before Milner, who were killed by their own pit bulls (Darla Napora, Bethany Stephens and more), gross speculation and conspiracy theories fueled by pit bull advocates has followed. Claims like, Milner must have been "struck by a car" or "she was killed by a bear." There is a reason why jurisdictions in 53 countries regulate this dog breed. The routine horrific injuries pit bulls inflict, including deglovings, have no place in a civilized society."

A deadly bodega row and the shocking video that may help shopkeeper walk free - "It all started over a $3 bag of potato chips.  It ended with a 37-year-old man lying dead in a pool of blood on the floor of a bodega and a 62-year-old shopkeeper charged with his murder... The fatal incident was captured on shocking surveillance footage revealing 37-year-old Austin Simon attacking 62-year-old Jose Alba before Mr Alba pulled a knife and stabbed him to death.  A criminal attorney tells The Independent that the graphic video is likely the key to the bodega worker’s release from prison as she described the decision to charge him in the first place as “unfathomable” under New York’s self-defence laws... The girlfriend, who has not been publicly named, wanted to buy a bag of chips for her daughter but she didn’t have enough money to pay for them, said police.  At that point, she allegedly ran out of the store to get her boyfriend.  What happens next was captured on surveillance footage inside the store.  In it, Mr Simon is seen suddenly entering the space behind the counter where Mr Alba is serving customers.  He confronts Mr Alba and violently shoves the 62-year-old against the shelves.  Mr Alba falls back and lands in a chair by the wall.  A hand is seen reaching over the counter during the incident.  Mr Simon continues to square up in the shop worker’s face shouting at him the person in front of the counter. There is no sound in the footage.  The 37-year-old then grabs Mr Alba by the back of his shirt and pulls him up out of his chair out of the counter area. At that point, the bodega worker grabs a knife from some shelves and begins to stab Mr Simon... Mr Simon’s girlfriend also produced her own knife and stabbed Mr Alba in the arm... Mr Alba was arrested on the scene and was charged with second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon.  He was sent to the notorious Rikers Island jail and a judge ordered him to be held on $250,000 bond – less than half the $500,000 prosecutors asked for... The case – as well as the unusually high bond in the city – sparked uproar from Mr Alba’s family as well as members of the community who say the well-loved store worker with no criminal record had no choice when he came under attack... records show that Mr Simon has had multiple brushes with the law and was on parole at the time for allegedly attacking a police officer... Katherine Fernandez, criminal defense attorney at the Law Offices of Julie Rendelman in New York, tells The Independent that – having watched the surveillance video she believes it was a matter of self-defence.  Under New York law, a person is justified in using physical force against another in self-defence when they have a reasonable belief that deadly or imminent physical force is going to be used against them; when the defendant is not the initial aggressor; and when the defendant has made an attempt to retreat if it is safe to do so.  Ms Fernandez says that the footage shows Mr Alba can argue all of those things. “Looking at the video, it is very important to note that Jose Alba is in a very confined work area and the man comes into the area behind the cash register where he is not supposed to be,” she says.  “This guy comes in, he immediately gets up close to him in his face…. The deceased is clearly the initial aggressor.”  She adds: “Clearly the deceased is extremely aggressive. He pushes him down and literally stops Alba from leaving.  “And as Alba tries to get up – and this is important as he has a duty to try to retreat – the guy grabs him… that’s when he pulls out the knife.”... Mr Alba allegedly took the bag of chips from the woman’s daughter but that moment is not seen in the footage.  “You can’t touch my daughter. Don’t snatch that out of my daughter, you f***ing piece of shit,” she shouts.  “I’m gonna bring my n**** down here and he gonna f*** you up. My n**** is gonna come down here right now and f*** you up!”"

Customers Angry Over $1.75 Dipping Sauces Allegedly Caused $25K in Damages at LES Fries Shop - "The three patrons responsible for a violent attack at Bel-Fries in the Lower East Side now face criminal assault charges, reports the New York Post. Bowery Boogie initially reported that at around 4 a.m. on July 4, staff allegedly asked three customers to pay $1.75 for extra dipping sauce. That set off a bashing that, according to owner Annalee Schlossberg, caused $25,000 dollars in damages to the property and led to an injured employee who needed a staple in her head after being struck by a tablet cash register."
Bel Fries shop owner dismayed no one came to her staff's rescue - "Just as bad were the more than 20 people who celebrated the mayhem and did nothing to stop it, said Bel Fries proprietor Annalee Schlossberg.  “Not only were [the women] crazy, destructive animals, but everyone just stood by and watched,” the 23-year-old entrepreneur said. “Everyone outside was recording and laughing and cheering on the girls, which is the most disgusting part.”...   “I’m thinking I’ll need a bouncer and protective glass across the entire counter so no one can get through”...   The furious French fry fiasco unfolded July 3, when Pearl Ozoria, 27, Chitara Plasencia, 25, and Tatiyanna Johnson, 23, were asked to pay $1.75 for extra dipping sauce"

Venice to charge tourists €10 to enter the city in world first - "Venice is to become the first city in the world to introduce a booking system whereby tourists will have to pay up to 10 euros each to enter.  The controversial ticketing initiative, announced on Friday, comes after years of rancorous debate over the suffocating effects of over-tourism on the city long known as “La Serenissima”.  The authorities say the booking system is essential to combat overcrowding, but critics say it edges the World Heritage city closer to being a warped brand of cultural Disneyland.   From January 16, tourists planning to visit will have to make a booking online and pay an entrance fee – or a “contribution to access” as the city prefers to call it. The amount will vary according to how busy the season is – during Easter, the summer holidays, historic regattas and festivals, the fee will be 10 euros per person. During quieter periods of the year, it will be just three euros a head.  The booking system will apply only to day-trippers on the basis that they make little economic contribution to the city... It could offer an example to other destinations that risk being smothered by legions of selfie-snapping visitors, from Dubrovnik in Croatia to the island of Santorini in the Aegean.  As crowds return post-pandemic, Maui in Hawaii has introduced a tourist tax and Amsterdam has banned the opening of new hotels in the city centre...   Some Venetians believe the system should go a step further and impose a maximum number of visitors who can enter the lagoon city.   Jane da Mosto, the head of a pressure group called We Are Here Venice, thinks the number of tourists should be set at around 50,000 – the same as the number of inhabitants."
