I wanted to reproduce this chart, so I took the liberty to download all NOAA GHCNd station files. I then selected all United States stations and filtered them so that I could examine records from long-term stations (which NCA4 did, although to my knowledge, they didn't define their criteria). Using my judgement, I selected all 711 stations that have at least 100 years of daily data with at least 85% of daily observations available (i.e., no more than 15% of days missing in the records). Finally, I wrote a Python script to analyze daily record high maximums and low minimums and count the number by year set (including all tied records where applicable), then ran the analysis from 1895 to 2024 (since 2025 is not fully in).
As it turns out, the number of record high temperatures have not increased since 1895. In fact, they have decreased since the 1950s (see top panel of figure on the right). The number of record lows (middle panel) have decreased too, but sharply since the late 1980s. Because of that, if you compute these raw values as a ratio with record lows in the denominator, it produces a sharp increase in the ratio of record high to low temperature records after 1990. That's what NCA4 did, and I was able to produce a very similar plot to verify that. So, while NCA4 didn't lie, they mislead people by using ratios. The IPCC does the same thing with hurricane statistics."

The IPCC’s mandate was to look for dangerous human-caused climate change.” “Then the national funding agencies directed all the funding . . . assuming there are dangerous impacts.” The researchers quickly figured out that the way to get funded was to make alarmist claims about “man-made climate change.” This is how “manufactured consensus” happens. Even if a skeptic did get funding, it’s harder to publish because journal editors are alarmists. “The editor of the journal Science wrote this political rant,” says Curry. She even said, “The time for debate has ended.” “What kind of message does that give?” adds Curry. Then she answers her own question: “Promote the alarming papers! Don’t even send the other ones out for review. If you wanted to advance in your career, like be at a prestigious university and get a big salary, have big laboratory space, get lots of grant funding, be director of an institute, there was clearly one path to go.” That’s what we’ve got now: a massive government-funded climate alarmism complex."

The stated reason for blocking? Climate and environment. The actual result? ISO New England's own analysis: "Oil and coal generators are critical on the coldest winter days when natural gas supply is constrained." Oil produces 50% more CO2 per MWh than natural gas combined cycle. Coal is worse. They blocked pipelines to fight climate change. The outcome is higher emissions during peak demand, higher electricity prices, and grid strain. Policy intended to reduce emissions is forcing the exact opposite.
