Voluntary Decolonisation
"The decolonisation of Portuguese Africa came intimately to be linked with the demise of the dictatorship in metropolitan Portugal. Quite clearly, the impetus for, and the political orientation of, the coup which eventually toppled the Salazar-Caetano regime owed much to the involvement of the military in the African nationalist wars. Hence, the history of Portugal's march to democracy is inextriably connected with that of the decolonisation of its African empire" --- A History of Postcolonial Lusophone Africa / Patrick Chabal
