Thread by @njhochman on Thread Reader App – Thread Reader App - "In 1954, 750 Border Patrol agents deported 1.1 million illegals in the space of a few months. Today, we have 21,000 Border Patrol agents—and far more advanced technology. Mass deportations are reasonable, necessary and possible. We've done it before—and we can do it again. 🧵
Trump wants the largest deportation force in history. His critics say that's too costly, complicated and cruel. They're wrong. We should start making that argument now. Support for deportations is at record highs—but once they start, the media is going to try to change that. There are two main categories here: "Returns" and "Removals." "Returns" are voluntary departures—illegal aliens choosing to leave on their own without a formal deportation order. "Removals" are what we think of as deportations—compulsory and based on a formal order of removal. Deportations have been climbing for decades. Barack Obama actually deported a record number of people—more than 3 million. (Although interior removals declined relative to the overall illegal population). He was nicknamed the "deporter in chief" by his left-wing critics.
There have been various points in American history—under both Republican and Democrat presidents—where we've mass-mobilized resources to repel a border invasion. Clinton launched Operation Gatekeeper. Bush and Obama both deployed the National Guard to help apprehend illegals. To be clear, what President Trump is aiming to do is more ambitious. As of July 2023, an estimated 11.7 million illegal aliens lived in the US. Some estimate it's far more. To fix this decades-long crisis, Trump will have to deport more than any other president in history.
But this, too, has a precedent. The most successful mass deportation in American history happened in 1954—exactly 70 years ago. A program known as "Operation Wetback" removed 1.1 million illegal aliens in just a few months. Here's the kicker: They did it with only 750 agents. In 1954, America faced a crisis similar to ours: 3 million illegal aliens had crossed the border over the past few years. The farm industry was exploiting the cheap migrant labor to pay half the American wage—and they were paying off local officials to look the other way. Ranchers were paying illegal workers about half the going American wage. Senior US immigration officials "had friends among the ranchers"—so they looked the other way. Border Patrol agents didn't dare make arrests on certain farms, because their bosses had political connections.
Powerful politicians like Sen. Lyndon Johnson (D) of Texas were in bed with influential vested interests, such as ranchers and growers, who wanted cheap migrant labor to pick their crops and tend their herds. From 1944-1954, illegal immigration from Mexico increased 6,000%. President Eisenhower's solution was to go around the establishment. He appointed Gen. Joseph Swing—his old West Point classmate—to head immigration enforcement. Swing's first move: Transfer corrupt officials away from the border—and replace them with men who would do their job.
On June 17, 1954, "Operation Wetback" began. It started in California and Arizona, but by mid-July, it had extended into the rest of the interior. By the end of July, the 750 agents had caught over 50,000 illegals—and another 488,000 illegals had voluntarily fled the country. Over half a million, in one month—with 750 agents. In just two years, Border Patrol "had virtually halted illegal immigration across the entire 2,000-mile US-Mexico frontier." Once "removals" began, "voluntary returns" spiked. Illegal workers saw which way the wind was blowing.
Another innovation: They didn't just drop deportees at the border, where they could easily hop back across into America. They used buses, trains, planes and ships to take them more than 500 miles south into Mexico. Many were met at the border with specially chartered trains.
It worked. By the end of the 1950s, illegal immigration had declined by 95%. In just a few years, America hadn't just deported the surge of illegal immigrants who had entered our country—we had eliminated the problem of illegal immigration altogether. (For at least a time).
What this shows is that large-scale mass deportations are not only possible—they become easier as you go. Once you start deporting en masse, many illegals will voluntarily leave the country. Here's what some Border Patrol veterans of Operation Wetback said in a 2006 interview:
To reiterate: This was achieved with 750 agents—1/28th of the Border Patrol force today. With 1950s-era surveillance, apprehension and transportation capabilities. Mass deportations are not "impossible"—far from it. We have the tools. We just need the political will to use them."

Not only was she uninsured and unlicensed and driving an unregistered vehicle, she was driving like it was her 1st time. So she hits me, she walks away. The cop gave her a ticket. I asked the cop "how do you know who she really is?" The cop shrugged, said he has no idea if she is who she really is, and told me he deals with this all day every day. Because we're in a sanctuary county and state there's not a lot he can do. I have no idea if she paid her reckless driving ticket. There's been no follow up from the DA. So I got hurt. It could have been worse, but I've been pretty fucked up for the past 14 months or so. And I've got medical bills. For the ambulance ride, MRIs, PT, follow up appointments, specialists. All the things. My health insurance won't cover the accident costs, because my auto insurance is supposed to do that. So I submit bills to my (major) auto insurance company. Then I get a letter, emails, and a text telling me I've reached my coverage limit and to stop submitting bills. I had uninsured driver coverage, but they claimed I didn't. So I had to get a lawyer. Now instead of just paying the medical bills, the insurance co will have to pay more for my "pain and suffering". Except... any extra money I collect will not go to me. It will go to my lawyer. At this point I just want to get reimbursed for my out of pocket costs--which are pretty severe and have stressed my savings. But it's been 14 months and I have yet to see a dime. My lawyer just wrote up the demand for payment. Every little charge is itemized. The document is 25 pages long + there are hundreds of pages of documentation attached.... If you drive in the USA you might have noticed your auto insurance premiums have gotten really expensive. It's mostly due to cases like mine, where illegal immigrants without insurance decided to play bumper cars on city streets. You'd think that the insurance companies (who are quite a powerful lobby) would be publicly demanding mass deportations. But they didn't publicly demand anything. And I'm not sure why exactly (insurance industry followers feel free to chime in). But I'm sure the fear of being called a racist had something to do with it. And even now that we have a president who's doing something about the problem, they're still silent. As for me, I'll be fine. But it's been 14 months. I'm out of pocket many tens of thousands of dollars in medical costs. My neck still hurts. I can't lift my arm over my head. And I'm paying way too much for car insurance🤷♂️
Oh, and in case you're wondering... yes I could sue the woman who hit me. But no lawyer would take it on contingency. Because she doesn't have anything I can collect. If the roles were reversed, she'd be suing me and I'd be losing my house right now.

Thread by @njhochman on Thread Reader App – Thread Reader App - "This is arguably the single most important aspect of Trump's funding freeze. The immigration crisis isn't an accident. It's a well-oiled system, facilitated by powerful NGOs—and funded by your tax dollars. By defunding the NGOs, Trump is crippling the entire system. 🧵
Here's what just happened: Last week, President Trump signed an executive order suspending refugee admissions into the U.S. Then, the State Department went a step further—they issued a "stop-work" order to their NGO "partners," suspending all funding for refugee resettlement. The NGOs were beside themselves. And for good reason—very few of these groups are self-sufficient. Most of them are sustained by the federal tax-dollar gravy train. The immigration crisis is being financed by your government—with your money. Hence, their outraged statements:
To be clear, these NGOs exist to subvert U.S. immigration law at every step of the process—actively transporting migrants into the country, fighting enforcement efforts at the border, resettling migrants in American towns and cities, and lobbying for open border policies in D.C. And again, they've been doing it on your dime. For the past four years, The Biden State Department has been mainlining taxpayer funds to groups that run an end-to-end mass migration network, beginning deep in South America and finishing with resettlement in American communities. They provide "humanitarian transportation" to ferry immigrants up to our border, waypoints with shelter and medical services along the way, Spanish-language maps showing the best route to the U.S., and legal services for immigrants to beat our immigration laws once they get here. Oh, and money. They just give them cash cards, vouchers, and often even just stacks of cash in envelopes. Tough to think of a more direct 1:1 redistribution: You pay your taxes. Your government sends that money to the NGOs. The NGOs hand it to immigrants. You work, they benefit. Ten of these major immigration NGOs—known as VOLAGS ("Voluntary Agencies")—have contracts with the State Department's Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration (PRM), which provides them with the funding to resettle migrants in the U.S. These are the ten VOLAGS in question:
Most of these groups are only able to operate because of the federal government. Take the USCCB: In 2023, they received $129.6M in federal grants for migration services. They spent $130.5M on migration services. Their immigration activities are almost 100% taxpayer-funded. Or take the Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service. (Which, unlike the USCCB as an overall organization, is exclusively focused on immigration). In FY 2023, 96.65% of their revenue came from federal grants and contracts, to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars. Or take the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society—a group that we made an entire video about last year. (See below). Biden DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas served on their board until taking a job in the Biden admin. Surprise, surprise—after he took office, their funding skyrocketed.
If you're looking for the villain at the center of the immigration crisis, it's these guys. The refugee NGOs are a fifth column in American politics. And they've essentially been acting as an extension of the federal government. But not anymore. This is a big, big win."

To summarize: An illegal alien MS-13 gang member gets released at the border, has his due process and is ordered deported by a DOJ immigration judge, then gets arrested in Boston on gun & drug charges, where he is protected by sanctuary policy and released onto the streets after ICE’s detainer request is ignored. A lot of the far-left has completely inverted that. They seem to hate the citizens of their own country and care more about people outside their own borders. That is no way to run a society and I think the profound difference that Donald Trump brings to the leadership of this country is that the simple concept -- America first. It doesn't mean you hate anybody else.
