Soaring immigration is fuelling Britain’s housing crisis, says Bank of England’s chief economist - "Huw Pill said higher interest rates were not responsible for record hikes in rental costs, which jumped by 9.2pc in the year to March. He said “quite large increases in immigration” were piling more pressure on Britain’s housing stock, after net migration hit a record-breaking 745,000 in 2022... A report by the Centre for Policy Studies this week warned that record levels of immigration had failed to boost the economy while making the housing crisis worse. The report, which was backed by former immigration minister Robert Jenrick, said migration now accounted for around 89pc of the 1.34m increase in England’s “housing deficit”... Mr Pill said the Bank had little influence over housebuilding, as he suggested politicians should do more to build more properties. He said: “I think that the best role we can play is to do our job and let other people do their job. “And their job might be: well should we look again at some of the things that are constraining supply? Should we look at planning regulation? Should we look at building restrictions? “And of course, this is not a problem that will go away because the drivers of the population are going to be quite consistent.” The Office for Budget Responsibility, the government’s tax and spending watchdog, has previously predicted that net migration – the numbers entering the UK minus those leaving – will average 350,000 over the next five years. This is up from a prediction of 290,000 just a few months ago. This will drive up the total number of adults in the UK from 55m in 2023 to 57m by the end of the decade."

Asylum seekers pose as stateless Kuwaitis to trick their way to Britain - "Asylum seekers are being coached to exploit a loophole that allows them to gain refuge in Britain by claiming to be from a stateless minority group in Kuwait... it advises applicants to claim that they “don’t have a birth certificate nor does my family because we are stateless”, adding that they should say: “I have no official papers.”... The document also contains exact quotes to rehearse to repeat to the authorities, including “in Kuwait no passports for Bidoon”, “no school”, “no hospital”, “police beat us” and “I had to leave”. The same phraseology appeared in a 2024 Guardian article that documented asylum seekers in Calais, quoting one saying: “In Kuwait no passports for Bidoon, no school, no hospital, police beat us. I had to leave.” The Home Office was warned a decade ago that supposed Bidoons were gaming the system – and now claims are surging. Between the years ending June 2021 and 2025, 5,272 people from Kuwait applied for asylum in the UK. This is almost double the 2,874 people who applied in the previous 20 years. Acceptance rates have risen from 41 to 81 per cent in that time. Claims by stateless individuals hit a record high in the year ending June 2025, jumping from 287 to 1,418. Acceptance rates hit 92.1 per cent in that period, also a record high having averaged at just 43.1 per cent in the 2010s... investigations by the Amman authorities had found migrants falsely claiming to be Bidoons, providing implausible accounts of their journeys to Jordan from Kuwait and using forged documents. The report stated: “The majority appeared to know little or nothing of Kuwait”. It also revealed that the Jordanian ministry of interior alerted the Home Office that some applicants for Kuwaiti Bidoon family reunions who had been given UK clearance as “stateless individuals” had used Iraqi identities to enter Jordan. “This suggested to the Home Office a pattern of immigration abuse, and it launched an investigation of applications made by Kuwaiti Bidoons,” it said. Staff also identified a significant number of cases where marriage certificates came from the same mosque in Kuwait and were signed by the same four or five imams. The Kuwaiti authorities investigated these mosques, and discovered those imams were not real and the marriage certificates did not appear in their marriage registers. The Kuwaitis also helped the Home Office to identify fake Bidoon birth certificates."

Rachel Reeves’s moan about ‘mansplaining’ is proof that she’s out of her depth - "Cat Eccles, the MP for Stourbridge – after a fascinating remark about immigration. On Tuesday, Ms Eccles went on the radio to explain why she dislikes ministers’ plans to tighten up the asylum system. “It just feels that they are trying to just be seen to be doing something,” she lamented, “just to appease the electorate.” Appease the electorate? Goodness, what a horrifying thought. I do sympathise. After all, giving voters what they actually want would represent a shocking break with Labour tradition. Let’s not forget what Roy Hattersley, the party’s former deputy leader, wrote in The Guardian in 2009 about his time as MP for Birmingham Sparkbrook. “For most of my 33 years in Westminster,” he recalled with satisfaction, “I was able to resist Sparkbrook’s demands about the great issues of national policy – otherwise, my first decade would have been spent opposing all Commonwealth immigration and my last calling for withdrawal from the European Union.” Imagine! Similar sentiments were expressed by Douglas (later Baron) Jay, a postwar Labour minister. In 1937, he wrote: “In the case of nutrition and health, just as in the case of education, the gentleman in Whitehall really does know better what is good for people than people know themselves.” Almost a century on, however, members of the public somehow still have the effrontery, the arrogance, the bare-faced cheek, to expect their democratically elected representatives to do the sort of things they tell them to. Honestly. Who do these voters think they are?"

Posh girls for illegal immigration - spiked - "The calibre of so-called progressives coming out to bat for illegal immigration amid growing anger over migrant hotels has been of a very low quality lately. So low in fact that they are making the situation worse. I've been struck by just how many of the talking heads commissioned to appear on various current-affairs shows and radio phone-ins don't appear to understand the migrant-hotels issue or why it's provoking so much anger. Among the many low-calibre pundits in this vein one in particular has stood out: Zoe Gardner. On an edition of BBC Two's Newsnight this week, there Gardner was - again. Billed as an 'asylum and migration researcher', she set about spinning the tired and unbelievable narrative that the tens of thousands of asylum seekers entering the UK illegally are all victims of persecution or refugees from war. She dismissed talk of protesters' 'legitimate concerns' about the asylum seekers, despite the serious criminal charges hanging over some of them, as a racist trope - one she seems to think has been put about by Nigel Farage and regurgitated by an unthinking and bigoted British public. 'I'm not affected by people in the UK arriving on small boats - and neither are you'... Gardner's CV is typical for the types of experts / politicians / journalists now doing the media rounds. Since graduating from the London School of Economics, she has had 'roles' rather than jobs. These include stints at the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants, Asylum Aid, the Race Equality Foundation, and the European Council on Refugees and Exiles. She describes herself in one of her bylines as an 'independent immigration-policy expert and campaigner for the rights of all migrants and refugees in the UK and across Europe'. When she is not being an immigration-policy expert, she is a 'grassroots activist' - a role she has performed for the anti-Brexit group, Another Europe is Possible, and something called the Stop Trump Coalition. These campaigning groups are united by their opposition to democracy... It seems that Ms Gardner has been living and 'working' (and I am using the word 'working' very loosely) within a very elite London network, consisting almost entirely of people who have never had a job that wasn't entitled 'activist' or 'journalist'. They exist to write op-eds for the publications of the middle-class left or to provide right- thinking views on liberal broadcast media - all of which are run by people just like them, with the same background, views and no doubt the same friends. Perhaps it's unfair to focus just on Gardner. There are so many upper-middle-class, privileged activists whose whole life experience is centered on the green rooms of BBC politics shows and each other's media and campaigning outlets. Similar pieces to this could be written about countless others in her mould. There's 'literal communist' Ash Sarkar, self-styled 'Marxist' Grace Blakeley, Green Queen Caroline Lucas and Guardian aristocrat Polly Toynbee. And that's just the professional-activist women - there's an even longer list of men of a similar ilk. In some ways, there is nothing new about haute-bourgeois types going out into the world to castigate 'the poor', with a scented handkerchief at hand to protect their sensitive nostrils from the smell of poverty. British philanthropy was built on such self-righteous condescension, as were some of our educational institutions, such as the London School of Economics. Indeed, Britain's establishment left has always been fuelled by a distant, pity-the-poor attitude. Today's bourgeois radicals are heirs to the bourgeois leftism of the late-19th and early-20th centuries. I'm thinking of figures such as Sidney and Beatrice Webb, George Bernard Shaw, Harold Laski, John Maynard Keynes and Marie Stopes - all of whom, from positions of great privilege and comfort, thought that the best way of getting rid of poverty was by getting rid of the poor. Hence, their well-known embrace of eugenics... Like their predecessors, today's so-called progressives are convinced they are on the right side of history. They view the world entirely in their own self-righteous image. Gardner and others like her have no life experience or skill that could actually help those migrants they believe to be 'victims'. While they have dropped the old progressives' attachment to eugenics, they remain faintly disdainful of ordinary people. They have no understanding of the British working class, no sense of why it is that those they are long used to patronising have had enough of being ignored or silenced... We are living in extremely dangerous and divisive times. By dismissing the concerns of large swathes of the country, the nice left-wing ladies of London's middle class are only sowing further division."

Miss Jo on X - "This is the most British 2025 story. Lucius Njoku came to the UK from Nigeria on a student visa, bringing his wife. His wife got a job in the NHS and her visa allowed him to stay. Lucius then dressed as a woman, used the name “Joyce” and washed/dressed patients and did daily nursing tasks. The ID he was using came from another Nigerian woman who worked at the hospital, who had agreed to let him do some of her shifts. For months, none of his colleagues noticed. Eventually a patient realised and confronted him. Where is the dignity for female patients bing treated by a man dressed as a woman? Where is the punishment for fraud? He got a 16 week prison term, suspended for 12 months and a small fine. He was not deported."

Migrant crisis: Turkish man convicted for rape set for compensation after electronic tag left him 'depressed' - "Lawyers will take part in discussions to decide whether “appropriate relief” should be granted to Mustafa Taskiran, 48. High Court judge Mr Justice Lavender ruled in the migrant's favour just days before the 48-year-old admitted to stalking and threatening to kill a woman with a knife. The sex offender told the court that the electronic tag caused him “intense physical and mental distress” due to its weight and discomfort. Taskiran's long history of criminal activity began just four years after he was granted indefinite leave to remain in the UK in 1994. Over a ten-year period, he committed 54 offences but avoided a deportation order in 2009."

'Why was he allowed to be here?' rages mum of girl, 15, raped by asylum seeker with 11 previous convictions - "THE anguished mum of a 15-year-old girl raped by an asylum seeker raged: “Why was he here?” She said her family will never recover from the horror attack by Amin Abedi Mofrad, who was yesterday jailed for 12½ years. In a letter to the Home Secretary, she asked why the violent criminal, who had 11 previous convictions in Germany, was allowed to roam our streets. She said her girl “now carries a pain and trauma no child should ever know”, adding: “She has been handed a life sentence.” The Iranian predator, 35, dragged her down an alleyway as she walked home from an under-18s club night in Oxford on Valentine’s Day last year. Her pal took a snap of him as they got away... Mofrad arrived illegally on a small boat in 2023 and was arrested on suspicion of sexual assault that year. But the case was dropped over a lack of evidence. His 11 convictions in Germany were all for violent assaults and ABH between 2014 and 2019... Tamasin Graham, mitigating, told the court that Mofrad faced the death penalty in Iran as he “turned his back on Islam”. The judge said he must serve at least nine and a half years in prison. Asylum seeker, 34, ‘raped girl, 15, in alleyway & demanded she be a “sex doll” before boasting to his pals’, court hears | - "AN asylum seeker forced a girl of 15 to the ground and raped her while demanding she be “a sex doll”, a court heard. Amin Abedi Mofrad is accused of raping the helpless teenager in an alleyway in Oxford in February last year. The 35-year-old is then said to have sent a picture of himself kissing her to his pals to celebrate his achievement... cops found two contacts saved in his phone, both with a misspelling of the alleged victim’s name. Both phone numbers were one digit out. The device also had a string of “triumphant” texts supposedly sent to a pal named Ali. One text, sent just before 1am the next day, allegedly read: “I have never f*****d a p***y like that.” Another, sent some hours later, said: “I have just f****d two different p*****s tonight.”"

Who is the real, or fictional, inspiration for the new insurrectionary wing of the Democrat Party?

The fictitious Hollywood insurrectionist, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, “James Mattoon Scott” (Burt Lancaster), who in the 1964 film Seven Days in May attempted to overthrow the presidency?

Or perhaps Jefferson Davis? He ultimately ordered the attack by South Carolina state forces against the federal garrison at Fort Sumter, which ignited the Civil War.

Or is the better inspiration the “Stand in the Schoolhouse Door?” Alabama Governor George Wallace likewise vowed to use his state’s law enforcement to nullify a federal law.

Yet how odd that the left, which had lectured us so often about a January 6th “insurrection”—a charge that not even the Javert-like special counsel Jack Smith ever lodged against Donald Trump—now talks frequently about the proud nullification of our nation’s federal laws.

The New Confederacy

Democrats weirdly boast of the subordination of the Constitution to international statutes. Our governors and mayors in blue states and cities take neo-Confederate vows to oppose the national government’s right to protect its own property, to direct its own employees, and to enforce our shared federal laws.

Over a decade ago, some 600 “sanctuary cities” declared that they were immune from the full enforcement of federal law. They further boasted that they would not hand over illegal aliens, detained by state or local authorities, to federal agents.

These were strange threats. Not long ago, at the 1992 and 1996 Democratic conventions, liberal grandees like Bill and Hillary Clinton and Nancy Pelosi had vowed to stop all would-be illegal aliens from unlawfully entering the U.S. Apparently, they all flipped to open borders when spiraling numbers turned the undocumented into a new Democratic constituency.

Moreover, being the left, their loud nullificationist vows were, of course, purely political and never principled.

Once, an exasperated Arizona governor, Jan Brewer, had beseeched the Obama administration in vain to enforce its own federal laws at the southern border. In frustration, she finally sought ways to use her own state’s resources to do what Obama refused.

And the reaction of the Obama administration?

It was certainly not gratitude for Brewer’s efforts to enforce federal law. Instead, the Obama crowd sued her. It successfully sought out left-wing judges to stay her state’s efforts.

How strange that our current “principled” district judges once ruled that states could not interfere with federal border policing—even in cases where the federal government was illegally refusing to enforce its own laws.

But now they’ve become neo-Confederates who routinely favor states blocking the federal government when it is finally fulfilling its constitutional duties.

Of course, if any rural red county decided that it could nullify the federal government’s laws governing handgun registration or EPA regulations, the projectionist left would deem them insurrectionary new Confederates and send in the FBI.

Coup Bluster

In Trump’s first term, some retired four-star admirals and generals—Article 88 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice be damned—talked of a sitting U.S. President Trump leaving office, the “sooner the better”—whatever that meant. Others libeled him as a “liar” and “Mussolini,” his policies comparable to those of the executioners at Auschwitz.

Some retired lieutenant colonels in 2020 even publicly advocated using military units to confront presidential security details. Did they want an armed showdown to forcibly remove Trump from the Oval Office? And in their madness, they bragged about the purported greater lethality of their army friends to defeat the president’s supporters or security details: “Trump’s little green men, so intimidating to lightly armed federal law enforcement agents, step aside and fade away, realizing they would not constitute a good morning’s work for a brigade of the 82nd Airborne.”

Do we remember the Obama-era Pentagon lawyer who, eleven days into the first Trump administration, speculated in print about how to remove an elected President Trump? She offered up the choices of Trump removal by either the 25th Amendment, the impeachment process, or a military coup: “[A] possibility [for removing President Trump] is one that until recently I would have said was unthinkable in the United States of America: a military coup…”

We also remember Gen. Mark Milley, the recent Chairman of the Joint Chiefs.

He once apparently diagnosed Commander-in-Chief Trump as unhinged.

So Milley took it upon himself to warn his communist Chinese counterpart that during any existential crisis, the People’s Liberation Army head would be first contacted by Milley—if Milley ever felt Trump was too erratic to be obeyed (in Milley’s nonprofessional medical judgment).

So Milley reported his call as follows: “General Li, you and I have known each other for now five years. If we’re going to attack, I’m going to call you ahead of time. It’s not going to be a surprise.”

Milley apparently also decided that he was exempt from obeying federal laws.

As JCS chair, he also violated laws governing the chain of command. He unlawfully directed regional commanders to report to him first, should they receive a direct presidential order deemed lunatic by Milley. Yet the legal chain of command mandated that subordinate theater commanders report to, and receive presidential orders via, the Secretary of Defense.

Later, ex-generals like Milley and John Kelly routinely and emphatically blasted ex-President Trump as a “fascist.”

“Fascist” was just the sort of dangerous hyperbole that the left so often has warned us can prompt the unstable—like a Thomas Crooks or Ryan Routh—to emerge from their creepy shadows to “save the republic.”

Fort Sumter?

Democratic officials are also currently calling for organized and state-sanctioned opposition to the federal government, in near-Bleeding Kansas or Fort Sumter insurrectionary fashion.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson claims he will use his city resources to actively thwart ICE duties. In deranged fashion, he threatens to call in the UN to prevent federal law enforcement. He apparently treats the Constitution as nothing, as if Johnson were elected not by fellow citizens but by global voters from Iran to North Korea.

Johnson’s idiocy is no mere boast: when a trapped convoy of ICE vehicles was recently besieged by violent protesters, local Chicago-area police were told to stand down and let ICE fight its own way out.

In Portland, the local police sometimes advise violent Antifa-related protesters on strategies for their anti-ICE street activities, presumably to help them avoid arrest.

Consider the blather of the increasingly disturbed octogenarian Rep. Nancy Pelosi.

She recently boasted that “Trump is ‘a vile creature, the worst thing on the face of the Earth.” Then she doubled down and giggled that she “could have done much worse.”

But what exact epithet could Pelosi mean that is “much worse” than “vile” and “the worst thing on earth”?

The ‘vilest creature in the cosmos’?

Pelosi, remember, as Speaker of the House, set an embarrassing historic precedent by tearing up on national television the State of the Union address of the President of the United States when the text, as is customary, was ceremoniously presented to her by Trump. Should that now become a normal part of all SOTU addresses?

Recently, in a veritable paean to Jefferson Davis, Pelosi warned that federal agents might be arrested on her home turf if her state officers determine whether their enforcement of federal law violates California statutes.

If Pelosi’s confrontation materializes, will they use force?

Mayor-elect Zoran Mamdani has boasted in the past that he will soon override federal law as mayor of New York and arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu should he arrive at the UN headquarters in New York.

But what if the federal government says, “NO!” Will Mamdani then call in the NYPD?

Note, Mamdani did not issue a comparable threat to the communist Chinese UN delegations, whose government oversees a million Uyghurs in work camps, nor to the Nigerians who have allowed Islamic terrorists to kill over 150,000 Christians, nor to Vladimir Putin, who invaded Ukraine, causing over 1.5 million casualties in the greatest European slaughterhouse since World War II.

Instead, Mamdani appeals to a superior “international law.” In his unconstitutional mind, world law supersedes his own government’s constitutional authority.

As a de facto insurrectionist, Mamdani would claim that international human rights activists, or the International Criminal Court (?), deserve greater legal authority inside the U.S. than do Americans’ own elected federal government.

All that nonsense sounds like infamous Confederate Attorney General Judah Benjamin, who often bragged about how insurrectionary states could legally ignore federal authority.

Military Resistance?

Yet the most recent and dangerous example of insurrectionary nullification is an inflammatory video issued by Democrat and veteran politicos.

In it, Democratic lawmakers and veterans Sen. Elissa Slotkin, Sen. Mark Kelly, Rep. Jason Crow, Rep. Maggie Goodlander, Rep. Chris Deluzio, and Rep. Chrissy Houlahan appeal to U.S. soldiers to “disobey” their superior officers’ orders if, in their own legal opinion, they feel the orders are “illegal” by contravening the Constitution. How or why, they do not say.

Are we then to imagine an insurrectionary fantasy of 1.3 million active-duty soldiers, now each acting as his own lawyer, questioning daily orders from their officers? Not one of these elected officials provided a single instance of any past Trump order or Pentagon directive that would serve as an example of their nullificationist dogma.

When these Democratic officials also appealed to federal intelligence officers to likewise disobey orders, should we laugh or cry?

Did any of these moralists ever issue such a video when the Obama- and Biden-era Directors of the CIA, FBI, and National Intelligence all admittedly lied under oath?

How about when “51 intelligence authorities” deliberately lied in an open letter to the American people on the eve of the 2020 election to help elect Joe Biden? Or when the FBI agents worked with private social media to suppress the news?

In the video, did these officials mean that soldiers should resist presidential orders to employ federal troops to quell domestic chaos and rioting?

Lots of presidents have done just that from the Civil War to the present.

Would they have urged U.S. soldiers to disobey any order in pursuance of the use of force without congressional approval?

If so, why didn’t they damn past presidents like Harry S. Truman, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Joe Biden, who all directed the military to act abroad without the approval of Congress?

How about Barack Obama’s serial use of Predator assassination drones that, on at least one occasion, blew up an American citizen?

These sanctimonious Democrat officials did not outline any possible scenarios for their advocacy of insurrectionary disobedience—because they had no example to draw on.

Nor did they dare reference in any detail Articles 90 and 92 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice, which explicitly spell out when, in the rarest of cases, a soldier can disobey an order.

The officials had no concern that their video was endangering thousands—if someone might take their advice and, without cause, disobey an order, putting lives at risk, well beyond their own careers.

What the Democrats did not say is that they cut the video to implant a false narrative that Trump was on the verge of issuing unconstitutional orders, and they were encouraging mass and politicized disobedience, after the previous failure of the shutdown, mass street protests, attacks on ICE agents, and Tesla dealerships.

The New Secessionists

Leftists are now back to the same old, same old incendiary conspiracies and paranoias of Russian collusion, laptop disinformation, removing Trump from the ballot, impeaching him twice, indicting him 91 times, raiding his home with armed FBI agents, plotting stealthily to record him to invoke the 25th Amendment— and all the dangerous and often illegal ways it has sought to destroy a political opponent by any means necessary.

We certainly are in dangerous times. But the crisis is one of the left’s own making, in overtly inciting the country to a virtual rerun of 1861.

What else is urging American soldiers to defy the orders of their superiors without citing a single specific cause?

How about claiming by fiat that entire cities and states are immune from federal jurisdiction?

What about threatening to use state officers to arrest federal law enforcement officials?

Withholding local police help and thus endangering federal agents at the hands of violent protesters?

Making a mockery of the Uniform Code of Military Justice?

Advising violent protesters on how best to demonstrate against federal officials without being arrested?

Subordinating U.S. federal law to global legal authorities?

Using city resources to help illegal aliens evade federal law enforcement?

Arresting a foreign official with diplomatic immunity and under federal legal protection when he enters a local jurisdiction?

Freelancing by sidestepping the legal rights of the Commander-in-Chief and instead phoning to tip off an enemy general?

The common theme?

The desperate left feels the more insurrectionary tensions they can gin up, the more that the ensuing domestic crises hurt an elected president whom they loathe.

They assume they are exempt from following the law because they believe they are our moral and intellectual superiors.

And so for the next four years, they will once again insist they can ignore or violate with contempt any federal law they please—as the nation is heading toward widespread civil insurrection of the left’s own neo-Confederate making.

Nurses given ‘kindness training’ after criticising trans colleague’s access to changing room - "Nurses were given “kindness training” after criticising a trans colleague’s access to the female changing room, a tribunal has heard.  Bethany Hutchison is one of eight nurses at an NHS hospital giving evidence at an employment tribunal over their treatment when they complained about a trans colleague using their changing room.  “We have had to go through ‘kindness’ training because of this, and no one who is opposed is allowed to say anything,” Ms Hutchison today told the tribunal in Newcastle.  Ms Hutchison said several colleagues told her they were embarrassed and distressed by having to undress in front of Rose Henderson, a biological male who identifies as a woman. Karen Danson told the hearing on Wednesday that Henderson triggered a flashback to child sexual abuse trauma when they met in the changing room at Darlington Memorial Hospital’s day surgery unit.  She said she became “alarmed” and was left “sobbing and shaking” when her half-dressed transgender colleague “was clearly watching” her in the women’s changing rooms in September 2023."

Trans nurse who used female changing room ‘just a large woman’, NHS says - "A transgender nurse who used a hospital’s female changing room was no different than a larger woman, an NHS boss has suggested.  Eight nurses are bringing a claim against the NHS after Rose Henderson, who was born male but identifies as a woman, was allowed to use the female changing facilities at Darlington Memorial Hospital.  An employment tribunal in Newcastle has previously heard allegations that Henderson, who was bearded, intimidated female colleagues and repeatedly asked one if she was going to get changed.  However, Andrew Thacker, of the County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust, said during a hearing on Tuesday that Henderson had not acted in a “threatening” way... The tribunal has heard that nurses started to raise concerns about Henderson using the changing rooms in the summer of 2023.  In one incident, a nurse alleged that a half-clothed Henderson “was clearly watching” her as she was about to get undressed and asked her three times if she was going to get changed.  She said the incident had triggered her post-traumatic stress disorder from child sexual abuse... Trans activist ‘deliberately provoked Graham Linehan’ - "A transgender activist deliberately provoked Graham Linehan, the Father Ted co-creator, by putting a camera in his face, a court has heard.  Linehan, the 57-year-old Irish comedy writer, is on trial accused of harassing Sophia Brooks, a trans woman, and damaging the activist’s phone outside a conference in Westminster on Oct 19 last year.  At Westminster magistrates’ court on Wednesday, Sarah Vine KC, Linehan’s barrister, said Brooks – who had been filming attendees at the event – had in fact been harassing Linehan.  In her closing remarks, Ms Vine said Brooks had followed “a course of conduct designed both to provoke and to harass Linehan”.  She told the trial that there was “a doubt, and a reasonable one at that”, whether marks on Brooks’ phone were caused by Linehan’s actions... English cricket facing legal action over transgender ban - "The Good Law Project, led by activist lawyer Jolyon Maugham, has written to the England and Wales Cricket Board demanding it reverse a decision taken just over a fortnight after April’s Supreme Court ruling on single-sex spaces.  The ECB was among a number of sports governing bodies to impose such a ban after the UK’s highest court said only those born female should be deemed women under the 2010 Equality Act.  The Football Association made a similar decision to the ECB – one taken almost three years earlier by the Rugby Football Union – following the ruling in a case brought by For Women Scotland.  The Good Law Project appears to have singled out cricket because of it being a non-contact sport, despite the risk of transgender women having strength and speed advantages over those born female... Lib Dem civil war breaks out over trans rights - "The Liberal Democrats are at war over trans rights after the leadership defied its members and banned biological men from taking women’s posts in the party.  On Tuesday, the party banned trans women from taking women’s positions following the Supreme Court’s ruling on biological sex.  The party’s LGBT+ group condemned the decision as “trans-exclusionary” and an “attack” on one of the country’s most marginalised groups... The original rules allowed those who “self-identify as women” to stand for party posts set aside for women, which gender-critical activists said diluted the chance that biological women could reach the top of the party.  After receiving legal advice, the party published the new rules on Tuesday, stating that quotas would be applied to people according to their sex at birth, not with their preferred gender identity... The Lib Dems said its rules would also change to ensure that at least one trans person should sit on all its larger committees. A spokeswoman for Liberal Voice for Women said: “It is good to see the party has taken on board legal advice and is now changing its quotas following the Supreme Court ruling to ensure quotas for women are reserved for women.  “However, we are concerned that the new quota guarantees those with a trans identity at least one place on every committee over 10 people, despite the fact trans people are only 0.5 per cent of the population, alongside the fact there is no evidence they are under-represented on Lib Dem committees.” In May, Sir Ed Davey said he accepted the Supreme Court ruling, but unlike Labour, he initially did nothing to change the party’s rules.  The clash comes under the backdrop of a series of trans rows that have engulfed the Lib Dems.  Last month, a Hertfordshire councillor was suspended after allegedly tweeting a picture of a girl aiming a gun, alongside the words “Shut the f--- up, terf”. A terf is a “trans-exclusionary radical feminist” and the term is used by trans rights activists as an insulting reference to those with gender-critical views. The image was sent to Natalie Bird, a gender-critical party member who the Lib Dems barred from standing for Parliament in 2018, because of her view that there are only two genders."

Are the Lib Dems Britain's most hypocritical party? - "Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey wants us all to believe that he and his party are the nice guys of UK politics... Davey was repeating the mantra again yesterday on the opening day of the party’s annual conference, with a call to “reject the divisive politics of Nigel Farage.”  But how unifying the Lib Dems are was amply demonstrated within minutes of the formal opening of the conference, when trans activists successfully prevented a motion on women’s rights being debated. It seems that rejecting division also means refusing to listen to women concerned about their rights to women-only spaces.  The motion, had it been debated and carried by delegates, would have brought the Lib Dems into line with the law as set out by the Equality Act 2010. But the Lib Dems, along with the Greens, the SNP and Jeremy Corbyn’s Your Party, are the last bastion holding out for the rights of trans women (biological men) to use and occupy spaces legally reserved for women. Any challenge to this position, even one that is backed by the Supreme Court, is anathema to the Lib Dems, and so the motion wasn’t even debated. So much for inclusiveness and fairness. Davey himself has shown no leadership on the issue. He has been challenged by Piers Morgan, who said to Davey: “In May 2023 you told LBC that women ‘quite clearly’ could have a penis.” To which the Lib Dem leader replied: “Well actually I didn’t say that.” Except he did. When presenter Nick Ferrari asked him, “So a woman can have a penis?” he replied “Well, quite clearly.” Ironically, given yesterday’s shutting down of the debate by his own conference, he used the same LBC interview to demand that the debate on trans rights be carried out with “a bit more maturity and a bit more compassion”. That none of that was seen yesterday is something we should not expect Sir Ed to be drawn on. There are few more divisive issues than the rights of women to their own spaces free from the presence of biological males, however they identify. Yet Davey only addresses it when he’s cornered in a TV studio and has yet to condemn yesterday’s silencing of Lib Dem women.   He may think he’s on firmer ground with his decision to boycott the state dinner for President Trump last week, exploiting his principled stand for all it was worth by letting us all know he had written to the King himself to explain his absence. Yet what value are such acts of ersatz principle when all you’re doing is lazily going with the flow of UK public opinion? Similarly, this great champion of unifying principle wants Britain to be thrown into another unseemly and deeply damaging period of division, all in service of his ambition that Britain should rejoin the EU (gradually, with customs union and then single market membership first: the “boiling frog” strategy).   Having vehemently opposed respecting the result of the 2016 referendum, Davey wants it overturned slowly, subtly, with as little fuss and public debate as possible. For that is the Lib Dem way: by all means subvert democracy (or the law as interpreted by the Supreme Court); just do it quietly, with a smile on your face so that everyone will believe you’re doing it for the right reasons. If true leadership means telling your own followers uncomfortable truths that they don’t want to hear, then Davey has already failed. Opposing Donald Trump is easy, especially when you’re the leader of only the third biggest party in the Commons. Supporting rejoining the EU is easy when most of your party already feels the same.  But on difficult issues like the threat to women’s privacy and safety from the trans rights movement, Davey is, like the SNP leader John Swinney, a prisoner of his own activists. Not for him the courage shown by, for example, Neil Kinnock, who risked dividing his party at Labour’s 1985 conference by denouncing Militant from the platform."

Whether they would say so explicitly or not, most people feel that they should be able to take decisions for themselves about their social and economic condition – and that they should be prepared to accept the consequences of those decisions. Indeed, they believe that it is the possible consequences – the risks – that may follow from those choices which are the only things that make people behave sensibly. It follows that they resent the idea that the state should support those who have made no effort to improve their lives.  They do not see this resentment as nasty or unkind. Allowing people to prosper and achieve the rewards of their own ingenuity or hard work could not be acceptable because their success created inequality and was, in effect, a form of theft from those who lacked those fortunate traits. The only decent political solution was to take some of that advantage away and hand it out to those who, through no fault of their own, had achieved less. Wealth redistribution or, as it came to be known, “social fairness”, relied on the idea that even your apparent virtues – self-reliance, responsible behaviour, determination – were actually unfair privileges.   If your actions are constructive and conducive to success, that is just the good luck with which you happened to be gifted at birth. The problem for contemporary democracy is that a great many people believe this too. Why do right wingers vote against their self-interest more than left-wingers? : r/AskSocialScience - "This isn't really answerable unless you clearly define what "one's self interest is."  If a left wing movie star votes for higher taxes, it's not in their immediate financial interest but might be in their long term financial interest or might be indirectly in their interest if it helps their community.  If a right wing business tycoon votes for lower taxes, it might be in order to give more money to charity to help their community or to hire more workers in their community, etc.  So what kind of interests are we talking about? Moral? Financial? Structural? Who are we talking about? The wealthy? The poor? Specific racial or ethnic groups? And are we talking about short term interests? Long term interests? Direct effects? Indirect effects?  Even getting much more specific like this, it would be hard to establish even your premise, but at least it would approach answerability.
