Links - 15th May 2025 (2 - General Wokeness [including Birmingham Bin Strike])

Thread by @lara_e_brown on Thread Reader App – Thread Reader App - "The Birmingham bin strike has reached its fifth week. Rubbish is piled high, rats are infesting the streets, and experts are concerned about Weil's disease.  🧵on how the Equality Act contributed to this, and how it may cause similar strikes across the country.
In 2012, 174 former Birmingham Council employees brought an equal pay appeal to the Supreme Court.  They argued Birmingham City Council had provided lower pay to women in predominantly female jobs (cooks, cleaners & care staff) compared to refuse collectors and road workers. They won their case.  Birmingham Council was found to have contravened equal pay legislation because they failed to provide bonuses to cooks, cleaners, catering and care staff, but did offer them to bin men, street cleaners, and grave diggers. This is not a case of women being paid less than men for the same work.  The claimants drew a comparison between manually taxing jobs, with higher labour shortages, and unsociable hours (bin men) and more popular jobs like cooking and cleaning. Because they lost the case, Birmingham Council have had thousands of equal pay claims brought against them.  So far, they have paid out £1.1 billion to former employees in equal pay compensation.  They estimated further liability in the region of £650m and £760m.
The first consequence of this is obvious - it caused the council to go bankrupt.  In September 2023 they issues a Section 114 notice declaring the council to be “in a negative General Fund position” due to “the cost of providing Equal Pay claims”.  The second consequence - the council urgently had to equalise pay for bin men and catering staff - or risk further payouts.  Because they were bankrupt, there was only one way to do this, by cutting pay for refuse collectors. Birmingham Council have been finding ways to cut the pay of those in male dominated professions.  Unite report they've cut £1,000 in shift pay already. They've also cut the highest paying refuse collection job-Waste Recycling and Collection Officer (an £8k pay cut for some) The council is at a total impasse. They have to make these cuts - if they don't they risk further equal pay lawsuits.  They are bankrupt so they simply cannot afford to bring up the pay of cooks, social care workers, and cleaners instead.
Birmingham won't be the only council to experience these problems.  Refuse collection is tough work. Councils need to pay more in recognition of this.  But, the workforce is also around 73% male. So will always be vulnerable to equal pay lawsuits.
Equal pay for the same work is a hard won right that should be defended at al costs.  But equal pay for similar work, as deemed by a judge, is madness.  It will bankrupt businesses and councils, and make it impossible to provide basic services."
Left wingers are pro-strike too, so clearly, the solution is to "tax the rich" more so all public workers can be paid more. And if bin men, street cleaners, and grave diggers become cooks, cleaners, catering and care staff because they'll get paid the same and the work is easier, the solution is to try to hire more "minorities" to fill those roles

Meme - Archie Hall @ArchieHall: "I'm not yet sure most Brits have realised the appalling mess "equal-value" pay claims are causing.  Councils are going bankrupt, business may have to fork out millions (and so raise prices).  Worse, the government is consulting on changes that'd make bringing them easier."

The lesson of Birmingham’s striking binmen - "Over £1bn ($1.3bn) in equal-pay claims have bankrupted Birmingham’s council. A common sticking-point is the pay for an intermediate grade of binman (the “waste recycling and collection officer”), which has been used as a cudgel by council-employed carers and cleaners, jobs that skew towards female workers, to demand a payout. The council wants to stave off future claims by eliminating the role. Winning a case on the grounds of equal value does not require proving sexism, even the subliminal kind. It hinges instead on a sort of judicial central planning. A recent judgment against Asda, a grocery chain, dissected workdays by the minute. Ms Darville, in the shop, handled fireworks, a known hazard. Occasionally she mopped up a spill. Mr Devenney, in the warehouse, spent 3% of his time tidying. Each job gets “points”, which sum to a “value”. If the judges’ score doesn’t match the market wage the role commands, and the gender balance is even moderately askew, there will be trouble. The Asda case has further to go, but the company may be on the hook for a £1.2bn payout and £400m in extra annual wage costs, a 15% increase. A rethink is long overdue. Britain did not originally recognise “equal value”; Barbara Castle, the Labour minister who introduced the Equal Pay Act in 1970, thought it too woolly. But it caught on across the English Channel, and was added to the law books in the 1980s, under pressure from Brussels. Trouble began in the 2000s, after a ruling in the late 1990s by the European Court of Justice, which let victors claim six years of back pay, making a win more lucrative. Alongside Britain’s relaxed rules about no-win-no-fee lawyers and higher levels of pay transparency, that proved a potent lure. Cue a bonanza. One law firm, Leigh Day, is orchestrating equal-pay claims against 70% of British grocery chains, by market share. A rent-seeking cabal of equal-pay advisers, evaluators and lawyers has sprung up. Firms realised that subcontracting hiring allows them to elude liability. Conservative-run councils, with fewer ideological hangups, have done so. Left-wing ones have struggled. Labour-led Sheffield also has an ongoing dispute, and Glasgow, under the Scottish National Party, has agreed to pay out £770m. Now the government is consulting on plans to close that escape-hatch by stretching the rules to cover outsourced workers. Politicians have let the issue fester. Even Unite, the binmen’s union, is too skittish to admit where the real issue lies: bewailing austerity is safer than wrestling with whether equal-pay rules have gone too far. Brexit has given Britain a chance to fix this. Instead of doubling down on equal value the government should ditch it and, like America, focus on people doing similar jobs... Europe should learn from Britain’s troubles. The European Commission is due to push through new pay-transparency rules in 2026, which will make equal-value cases far easier to bring. Birmingham is an hour’s flight from Brussels. Eurocrats would do well to take a walking tour of Birmingham’s bins—though they should mind where they tread."

Keith Woods on X - "This week I visited Alum Rock, an area of Brimingham where just 6.4% of residents are White. This makes it the most non-White region in the UK, and probably anywhere in Europe. This is some of the footage I recorded.  City councils are struggling financially in British cities, and there is now a dispute with bin workers that has left over 17,000 tonnes of rubbish on the streets of Birmingham.  Alum Rock has become one of the dirtiest areas of the whole city, with reports of "cat sized rats" roaming the streets. I don't think I heard English spoken anywhere on the street. Multiple flags were displayed, but nothing related to Britain. I only saw a couple of White people on a 20 minute walk through Alum Road. The majority group here is Pakistani.  Birmingham was once known as "the workshop of the world", a city that birthed the industrial revolution. These kinds of racial enclaves are the norm in its inner city now. This is the reality of multiculturalism.

Mark Hamill's Leftist Fans Blast Him For Promoting Christian Movie 'The King of Kings' - "Mark Hamill’s leftist fans did not take kindly to the actor promoting his latest film, the Christian movie, The King of Kings, which was made by Mofac Studios and distributed by Angel Studios... While Hamill’s fans excoriated him for promoting the Christian film, moviegoers made the film the second highest grossest film of the weekend behind A Minecraft Movie. The-Numbers reported the film grossed over $19 million.  Angel Studios’ Global Head of Theatrical Distribution & Brand Development Brandon Purdie touted the film’s success, “The Angel Guild picks winners. Angel’s revolutionary idea is simple: know your audience - and listen to them. The CinemaScore for The King of Kings says it all. The film is one of only 128 films to achieve an A+ CinemaScore, and only the 5th animated film to hold that title that isn’t a Pixar/Disney production. Thread by @michaelshermer on Thread Reader App – Thread Reader App - "🚨 Can We Save Science from Activism? 🚨 From endorsing political candidates to promoting exceptions for BLM protests during Covid lockdowns, modern social science has taken a political turn.  But science, when done right, is the best available tool to discover how the world really is—not what it should be.  So, what now? Scientists who still value objectivity lay out the path forward in Skeptic.  A thread 🧵👇
Principle #1: Measure Well. Many social science ideas, like microaggressions, have fundamental measurement issues. If something is defined entirely by personal perception, how can we objectively test or falsify it?  Example: Some claim that microaggressions cause psychological harm. But what if highly neurotic individuals are both:
✔️ More likely to perceive slights
✔️ More likely to struggle with mental health?
As psychologist Scott Lilienfeld pointed out, anything can be called a microaggression—including opposite behaviors.  Calling on a student vs. not calling on a student? Both have been labeled microaggressions.  Good science demands clear definitions and testable claims.
Principle #2: Objective Data > Lived Experience.  Today, we see “lived experience” elevated as unquestionable truth. But perceptions can be wildly inaccurate.  Perception ≠ reality.  Example: If a scientist claims radio waves aren’t real because they personally haven’t heard them, we’d demand data. Their nationality, gender, age, family name, or any other personal attribute should play no role.  The same standard must apply across disciplines—psychology is no exception.
Principle #3: Correlation ≠ Causation. We want to see patterns, but science demands rigor. Just because two things happen together doesn’t mean one causes the other.  Example: Some claim that lack of gender transition causes suicide. But what if underlying mental health factors explain both?
Solutions. You may be wondering how it can be that social scientists regularly violate basic scientific principles—principles that are so fundamental that these same scientists routinely teach them in introductory courses. What’s going on?  It’s time to return to first principles. ✅ Data over dogma"

A few trillion dollars later, the reality: The SAT, NAEP and ACT gaps between white and black students had not only not been eliminated but hadn't even meaningfully changed.  Even after the SAT was stripped of some of its g-loading in an effort to make it less of an "IQ test" in order to give blacks a boost, the gaps didn't budge that much — except for the gap between Asian-Americans and everyone else, which of course widened."

Thread by @sam_bidwell on Thread Reader App – Thread Reader App - "Wales has quietly become a hotbed of historical revisionism, anti-white discrimination, and DEI 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿  For decades, the Labour-led Welsh Government has pushed dangerous ideas about race, culture, and history onto an unwilling population.  A 🧵 on the disaster unfolding in Wales
But first, some context.  Since 1999, Wales has had its own parliament - the Senedd - with devolved responsibility for a number of issues.  Over time, the Senedd has received more powers from Westminster, allowing them to make decisions on things like healthcare and education. But despite this transfer of powers, the UK press is relatively disinterested in Welsh affairs.  This has allowed successive Welsh Governments to pursue radical agendas, without the kind of scrutiny which similar policies might face if they emanated from Westminster. This is made worse by the fact that Wales has been a one-party state for years.  Since 1999, every Welsh Government has been led by the Labour Party.  And often, Welsh Labour politicians are consigned to the Senedd because they are not talented enough to make it in Westminster. Increasing powers, little scrutiny, one-party dominance, and an unimpressive talent pool - this is a poisonous mix.  So what have Welsh Labour been doing, away from the prying eyes of the British press?
Well, despite the fact that Wales is 94% White, the Welsh Government has actively discriminates against White people in public sector hiring.  Just last week, news broke that the Welsh Government was offering £5,000 more to student teachers from ethnic minority backgrounds. This explicit discrimination is drawn from the Welsh Government's 'Anti-Racist Wales Action Plan', published in 2022.  'Anti-Racist Wales' aims to make Wales an anti-racist nation by 2030, and was shaped in consultation with a number of ethnic minority charities based in Wales. 'Anti-Racist Wales' proposes a transformation of Welsh society.  Every senior civil servant in Wales is now required to have one performance objective related to anti-racism.  It also sets a 20% recruitment target for ethnic minorities - despite the fact that Wales is 94% White. The plan commits to establishing a 'community mentor' scheme - hiring ethnic minority representatives to advise the Welsh Government on every area of policy.  Furthermore, it commits the Welsh Government to a regular 'Gypsy, Roma, and Traveller Stakeholder meeting'. The list goes on and on - the plan even called for 'dog-free' areas in the countryside.  I won't list every proposal in 'Anti-Racist Wales' - the entire document is 265-pages long.  However, I will highlight some examples of how the Plan is shaping every area of Welsh life.
In September 2024, the Welsh Government launched its 'Anti-Racist Heritage and Sport' Fund, providing grants of up to £20,000 for organisations which actively further 'anti-racism' in Wales.  The fund is managed by Diverse Cymru, an activist charity focused on 'racial equality'. Unsurprisingly, a litany of other race-obsessed charities have benefitted from the Welsh Government's agenda.  Race Council Cymru, which pushes revisionist agendas about the role of ethnic minorities in Welsh history, has received £1.4 million from the Government since 2017. Last year, RCC ran an entire week of seminars about the 'Windrush Generation' and its impact on Wales.  That's despite the fact that there's no evidence at all to support the idea that any passengers from the Empire Windrush settled in Wales. It is pure conjecture. In June 2024, the Welsh Government made it mandatory for all publicly-funded museums to teach 'decolonised' perspectives - including the National Coal Museum.  Teaching material at the former mine must “tell stories through the lens of black, Asian and minority ethnic people”. Guidance from the Group for Education in Museums warns that such connections may not be “obvious”, but suggests that all Welsh museums “will have some evidence of colonial and imperial trade and wealth”.  Guidance urges museums to search for material linked to “slavery, empire”. In October 2022, Wales became the first part of the UK to officially make 'Black History Month' a feature of its historical curriculum.  By any real measure, Black people have had a negligible impact on Welsh history - in 1991, there were less than 10,000 Black people in Wales. Meanwhile, in August 2024, librarians in Wales were warned against holding meetings with BAME colleagues in historic buildings, which might be perceived to be racist.  Local librarians in Wales are all expected to undertake 'decolonisation' training. Official guidance issued by the Welsh Government in March 2023 suggested that statues of 'old white men' could be torn down - particularly in cases where these figures might be viewed as 'aggressors'.  The guidance particularly highlighted figures such as Nelson and Wellington. This guidance was reiterated in 2024, when the Welsh Government made clear that all public art would need to be 'decolonised' - or face removal.  All public art in Wales must now "celebrate the achievements of our diverse society". In 2020, Cardiff Council voted to pull down a statue of Thomas Picton, the British Army officer who fought at the Battle of Waterloo.  In the same year, a plaque at his birthplace in Haverfordwest was removed. In 2022, the National Museum Cardiff removed all references to Picton.
And what is the aim of this? The funding of obscure race-focused charities, the changing of curriculums, and the removal of 'offensive' historical statues?  The Welsh Government has explicitly stated that it intends to 'change the beliefs and behaviour' of Wales' white majority. This seems particularly sinister in the context of Wales' demographics.  According to the 2021 Census, Wales is 94% White, and 91% White British.  Hardly a place with a long history of racial diversity. In fact, as recently as 1981, Wales was literally about 99% White. But without much scrutiny from the national press, the Welsh Government has been allowed to get away with this agenda.  It's time that we started paying attention to the quiet examples of progressive ideology which have taken root in provincial Britain."

Instead there are a bunch of diverse traits that differ on average, and then socially-constructed venues in which those traits are relevant to the outcome. If you invented a new sport with similar skill requirements it would likely have similar group disparities. Elite sports highlight small group differences because they draw from the extremes of distributions.  The idea of "genes for ____" is a simple model of genetics the public might have heard about in school, but is not how most real outcomes work. It's a deliberately stupid way to portray heredity that Bird appeals to to discredit the relevance of genetics for a lay audience."

Father Sues School Over Spartans Mascot: Symbol of 'White Supremacy' - Newsweek - "A New York father and NAACP leader is demanding his school district ditch its new "Spartans" mascot, alleging the warriors from ancient Greece symbolize enslavement and white supremacy.  William King Moss III, a father of two second-graders in the Brentwood Union Free School District on Long Island, filed a lawsuit last month claiming the Spartans moniker represents a symbol of "white supremacy" that violates state civil rights and constitutional protections... This is not the first mascot controversy to envelop the Long Island district. Last year, Brentwood schools were forced to drop their former name of the "Indians" after a state ruling banned public schools from using Native American imagery or logos. The "Spartans" mascot was decided to replace the "Indians" for the district, which includes about 18,000 students.  Moss, who has two daughters, said he was also angered that ancient Spartans didn't allow women in their military during their reign, some 2,500 years ago."
