Sweden's immigration taboo - "In 2021, a study was published with the goal of giving a broad characterization of rape offenders in Sweden (Khoshnood et al., 2021). But this study received some unwanted and unexpected attention. What was the issue? The researchers had found that the majority of rape convicts had immigrant background (either first- or second-generation). A female graduate student at the University of Gothenburg then filed a complaint to the Swedish government’s ethics review appeals board (“Önep”)... While the authors had an ethics permit to handle and analyze the data, the complaint alleged that they did not have a permit to analyze specifically the hypothesis regarding immigrants. This resulted in a lengthy investigation of the authors. To be clear, the goal of the study was not specifically to inquire into the perpetrators’ national backgrounds. Instead, the aim was to provide a broad characterization of rape offenders in Sweden. To do this they analyzed a large set of descriptive variables: year of birth, sex, educational attainment, socioeconomic status, number of prior convictions, type of prior convictions, psychiatric diagnoses, resilience, standardized test performance, school achievement, and, finally, country of birth. Immigrant status was but one of many variables; one they incidentally found had significance. Önep (the ethics review appeals board) alleged that the authors lacked ethics approval to handle the “sensitive personal data” in the paper (Albinsson, 2021). Importantly, in this context, “sensitive data” should not be understood in the usual sense of personally identifiable information (PII). Of course, individuals may not be identifiable, and their anonymity should be secured. But, since their analyses were all of aggregate-level trends, personal identifiability was of no concern. Instead, “sensitive” in this context is more properly understood in the sense of the topic and results being politically sensitive. Indeed, the investigation documents show that one of the critiques of the researchers was that they had insufficiently explained how their research would “reduce exclusion and improve integration” of immigrants. The case dragged on for a long time. But, according to the most recent news in 2023, the chief prosecutor decided to close the preliminary investigation. The authors were not found guilty of anything. Yet lack of guilt is only a partial consolation. The authors had been pulled into a stressful case that dragged on for years. The authors recently published a new study, similar to their prior research of rape offenders. In this study, they provided a characterization of firearm-related homicide offenders (Khoshnood et al., 2024). They analyzed the exact same explanatory variables as previously, except for one noteworthy difference: immigrant status was not considered. There is no mention of why immigrant status was excluded as a descriptive variable in this later study. They used the same register data, so it was certainly available in the data. We can only speculate why. Perhaps it was an editorial decision by the publication, or—more likely I think—the authors were simply not willing to face further social backlash, or risk their precarious academic positions as they are being watched with more attentive eyes. While immigration is widely considered a controversial subject, how countries have responded varies markedly. Sweden’s relative reluctance to openly sharing information about immigration stands in stark contrast to their neighbor, Denmark. This is despite the fact that immigrants are far more numerous in Sweden, making it an even more relevant public matter. For example, the Danish Ministry of Finance have published multiple reports regarding the net financial contribution of immigrants to public finances. No such analyses are issued by the government in Sweden. Annually, the Danish statistical agency (“Statistics Denmark”) publish a report about immigration which includes, among many other things, statistics regarding criminality. The Swedish agency responsible for crime statistics (“Brå”) have published a few reports detailing crime statistics in the context of immigration. The most recent Brå report was published in 2021. But the latest report before that was published more than 15 years earlier, in 2005. They are therefore very few and far between. The difference between Denmark and Sweden goes well beyond frequency of publication. Unlike the Brå report, the Danish report includes analyses at the level of country-of-origin. Furthermore, publicly available and easily accessible nation-of-origin conviction data is provided by Statistics Denmark, which anyone is free to look at and analyze. Brå, the Swedish agency, do not provide raw crime data that one can freely navigate. They only provide statistics and graphs of some pre-defined metrics, which do not include much in the way of immigration-relevant facts. Conspicuously absent in Swedish immigration research are detailed breakdowns by country of birth... But this reluctance to publicize country-level results did not always exist... Indeed, if you look at the LINDA database (Longitudinal INdividual DAta for Sweden), country of birth was available in the data set for decades prior to 2007 (see Table A2 in Edin & Fredriksson, 2000). Furthermore, if you go far enough back, the 1996 Brå report did provide country of origin results. This taboo permeates Swedish institutions and is often enforced even when country-of-origin data is available... In a democracy, citizens should have reasonably free access to such information (provided that anonymity is ensured), and citizens may draw policy conclusions from facts in accordance with their own values... Ethics review boards in Sweden are highly restrictive with respect to what may be published when you deal with these so-called “sensitive” variables. Beyond the government’s unwillingness to properly inform the public, and the unreasonable restrictions enforced by ethics boards, the broader Swedish milieu can be hostile to unwelcome findings"

How 'humanitarian' Sweden's immigration policies went all wrong | National Post - "Sweden has gone from being one of the most welcoming and tolerant nation for refugees and migrants to now offering foreign national adults almost $51,500 to leave the country... Sweden is also making it easier to deport foreign nationals who commit crime. In September, any foreign national sentenced to more than a fine will be liable to deportation... The Nordic Times quoted Migration Minister Johan Forssell, of the ruling centre-right Moderate Party, as saying, “Sweden will now have the Nordic region’s toughest framework for criminal deportations. Those who come to Sweden and commit crimes have forfeited Swedish hospitality and should be deported.” A “good conduct assessment,” expected to come into force in July 2026, will allow residency permits to be revoked for criminality or misconduct such as failing to comply with laws, posing a security threat or having unpaid debts. Those hoping to become Swedish citizens will face tougher requirements from June. Prospective citizens will have to have been resident in the country for eight years, up from five, and there will be a knowledge test on the Swedish language and society. Applicants will have to demonstrate “good conduct” and show they have an income to support themselves. It’s all a far cry from Sweden’s former open border policy. In 1985, there were 665,600 foreign-born nationals in Sweden, 7.8 per cent of the population. Last year, the number was 2.2 million, about 20.2 per cent. When Swedish employment minister Ylva Johansson visited Canada in 2015, Sweden was still seen as a progressive, liberal nation. That year was the peak of a migrant crisis in Europe as it was flooded with refugees fleeing wars in Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq. Sweden threw open its doors and saw 163,000 applying for protection, the highest per capita rate in Europe. “My Europe does not build walls,” then-prime minister Stefan Löfven, of the left-wing Social Democrats, said in September 2015. Two months later, Löfven started building the walls. In November 2015, at a highly emotional press conference, Löfven said, “It pains me that Sweden is no longer capable of receiving asylum seekers at the high level we do today. We simply cannot do anymore.”... Part of the debate is the degree to which immigration can be linked to the astonishing levels of criminality in Sweden. Sweden’s gun crime death rate is the highest in the European Union with Brå, the Swedish National Council for Crime Prevention, saying the country had four deaths per million inhabitants in 2025 compared with an average of 1.6 deaths in Europe. In the past three years, 23 innocent bystanders have been killed, caught in the crosshairs of gangland shootings. In 2024, Sweden recorded 317 explosions — usually gang-related protection rackets — and Kristersson admitted, “’It is clear that we do not have control over this wave of violence.” The Global Organized Crime Index depicted local gangs as often being from first- or second-generation migrant backgrounds, usually high school dropouts, and from marginalized areas marked by poverty and unemployment."
Clearly, those who say Sweden has a gun crime problem are lying. Sweden has just steadily broadened its definition of gun crime over the years, so you can't compare statistics across years, or to other countries
The Danish Law on Seizing Asylum Seekers’ Assets - "The Danish Government’s position is that foreigners who have the means to do so should pay for their stay in asylum centres and costs associated with healthcare. The Minister for Integration has compared asylum seekers to unemployed Danes who, she argues, must sell their assets in order to qualify to receive social benefits. Thus, it appears that, according to the Danish Government, the recent amendment does not discriminate asylum seekers, but rather places them on an equal footing with Danish citizens."

The Effects of Immigration in Denmark - "We can account for differences in age and sex distributions the following way. Instead of simply dividing by the total amount of people from each nation of origin, we can scale people counts by the age/sex violent crime conviction curves displayed in the previous section. For example, ten men of the age of 30 would create a far larger denominator than ten women of the age of 60. The results adjusted for age and sex can be seen below. A few facts are evident. First, adjusting for age and sex has very little influence on the nations’ rank order. Those that were previously near the top continue to be so, and vice versa. However, I find that, on average, the rate ratios are reduced by 20-25% when accounting for age, sex and year. This is almost exclusively because of the age differences between natives and immigrants. Second, it remains the case that the disparities are largely unexplained by differences in age or sex compositions. The top immigrant groups have >6 times greater conviction rates than natives, even when age and sex compositions have been adjusted for (down from >8 in the unadjusted model)... The official Danish report, with results highly consistent with that of my analysis, go further in attempting to explain the disparities. Along with age composition, they also control for various familial socioeconomic indicators. While such controls attenuate some disparities somewhat, they conclude that “the overall picture doesn’t change,” writing: “people from non-Western countries have higher [crime] index than people from Western countries, which cannot be explained by age, socioeconomic status, the family’s educational level or the family’s income.”"
From 2023. So much for the cope that immigrants and their descendants are younger, so their much higher offending rates are meaningless. Given that the official report already corrects for age, it's clear that this cope is even sillier than usual

Of course, there is a key difference: Denmark’s clean-up of ghettos does not involve rounding up migrants and sending them to concentration camps. Reducing crime and increasing employment, if this occurs, would be beneficial. On the other hand, the demolitions set a precedent, both legally and morally. It would be inconsistent with history to say that large-scale religious and racial persecution will never return to Europe. Before the Holocaust, Europeans failed to foresee the extent of Nazi Germany’s atrocities against the Jews, even as precedents were being set in smaller ways. In classes which may be replicated across the continent, male pupils, mostly of Arab and North African origin, are taught that skimpy clothes do not provide an excuse for rape or abuse... Linda Hagen, the leader of the course, has revealed the challenges she faces in trying to change the mindset of migrant men who have perpetrated sexual assault... Participants in the course often make comments like 'she kissed him, it's an invitation to have sex', and 'if she wants come to my place, that means she's consenting.' In response, Ms Hagen explains that Western standards are different to those found in some Islamic countries. Norway has been offering these courses for several years, but in the wake of the New Year's Eve mass sex attacks in Cologne, Germany, other countries affected have expressed an interest in them... Ms Hagen believes that the mass sexual assaults occurred because a hardcore of violent migrants instigated the abuse, and crowds of others - who are not naturally aggressive - followed their lead. The New Year's Eve sex attacks in Cologne and elsewhere sent shockwaves through Europe. Gang-rape and group sex attacks, known as 'taharrush gamea' in the Arab world, took place across German cities in January and are spreading to other countries. The Arabic term translates as 'collective harassment'. It is carried out by large gangs of men who crowd around a woman and commit a group sexual assault, either by groping or raping her. The gang surrounds the victim in circles. While some members take part in the abuse, others may either look on or divert outsiders' attention to what is occurring. The practice is carried out in public, normally in crowded places where the attackers can find safety in numbers and chaos. It first came to the attention of the Western world when the South African CBS reporter Lara Logan was set upon by a large group of men while reporting from Tahrir Square, Egypt, in 2011. 'Taharrush gamea' has not just occurred in Germany. On New Year’s Eve, coordinated gang rapes were reported in France, Belgium, Sweden, Finland and Norway, where Ms Hagen teaches. It has led authorities in a number of other European countries expressing an interest in setting up similar classes across the continent. Ms Hagen compared educating migrants to controlling an unruly class at school. When pupils are behaving like 'a single noisy mass', she explained, the situation can be defused by giving attention to 'two students with behavioural problems'. After that, the class can become 'completely normal'... 'In Norway, it's quite common to hug, to entwine, to dance very closely without it necessarily leading to a sexual encounter'... Abdelmonem Abdelrazak Al-Yousef was found to have raped the girl in September 2024, less than a year after arriving in Norway from Syria. He met her in Tromsø city center before assaulting her on a park bench and leading her to a secluded bike shed near the Harbour Terminal where he raped her. He initially denied meeting the girl, but after semen was found at the scene and traced to him, he admitted to meeting the victim but not engaging in sexual activity. Psychiatric assessments showed he had a very low IQ, and the court ruled that "the defendant is most likely no further along in development than the victim." A change to Norwegian law last year removed the minimum prison sentence of three years for rape, allowing the court to impose a partial suspended sentence conditional on probation, meaning he will only serve six months inside."
