Links - 29th November 2025 (1 - SNAP/US Government Shutdown)

Meme - "I don't think the N in SNAP stands for "Nutrition""
"SNAP recipients say they'll "starve" without benefits in November..." *Shopping cart full of junk food*

Opinion | Shutdown could end after SNAP cutoff, open enrollment and elections - The Washington Post (aka "A turning point in the government shutdown") - "Schumer has allowed the shutdown to drag on because he’s worried about fending off a primary challenger in 2028, and he’s still smarting from blowback he got from angry liberals after he agreed to fund the government this spring... federal public employee unions, a core Democratic constituency, are losing patience. The American Federation of Government Employees, which represents more than 800,000 federal and D.C. government workers, said in a statement Monday that the shutdown is unacceptably hurting its members: “It’s time to pass a clean continuing resolution and end this shutdown today,” said AFGE National President Everett Kelley. “No half measures, and no gamesmanship.”... Senate Democrats mostly stuck together last Thursday to block a bill that would have ensured the troops and other categories of essential employees keep getting paid, but now they’re insisting on a standalone bill to keep SNAP funded. They’re also accusing Trump of not tapping into emergency funds to keep the payments going, even as they’ve criticized him for diverting funds toward programs they care less about... Save the debate for another day about whether too many people qualify for food stamps, which have become significantly more generous over the years. Keeping the government open should be separated from policy disputes about how to spend taxpayer money. It is wrong that Democrats have held the government hostage for a month in hopes of extending costly Obamacare subsidies, just as it was for Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) to shut down the government in 2013 for 16 days in a bid to defund the Affordable Care Act altogether... The right answer is to reopen the government with a clean funding bill, ideally for a full year, to get food stamps flowing and federal workers back in the office, and then have a debate about ACA subsidies. Democrats openly acknowledge that they refuse to do this because it would mean giving up their leverage. If they persist, it could mean families start to go hungry."
I saw left wingers blame Republicans for not using the nuclear option, so the shutdown was their fault. But of course, if they did, this would be fascism

Attorney General Keith Ellison on X - "BREAKING: I'm suing the Trump administration to prevent them from suspending SNAP benefits. I will not allow Trump to use hungry children as bargaining chips. USDA has a multi-billion dollar contingency fund intended to keep programs like SNAP running. They must use it."
Grok on X - "Attorney General Ellison omits key context. SNAP suspension stems from a government shutdown causing lapsed appropriations, not arbitrary Trump fiat—Congress holds the purse. USDA states the contingency fund targets disasters or unforeseen spikes, not routine benefits amid shutdowns, deeming it legally unavailable for FY2026 regulars despite past continuations. His "bargaining chips" framing politicizes a funding dispute, ignoring lawmakers' role in resolving shutdowns."

iTamara on X - "Why are people worried about 42 Million people losing SNAP benefits, and not worried why so many people are on SNAP?"

Six Million on X - "I can see why some families are losing it over the SNAP cuts Some families haven't bought groceries since the 1950s/60s They have no memory of ever paying for food, there are people in their 50s, 60s, who have never actually paid for groceries, ever"

Zero HP Lovecraft ๐Ÿฆ…๐Ÿ on X - "quick math: Avg BMI of black american woman: 32 Avg height: 5'4 ∴ Avg Weight = 187 lbs To get to an acceptable BMI of 19, avg black woman needs to lose ~76 lbs In state of starvation, assume BMR of 1200 cal/day We should suspend SNAP for 220 days, 7.3 months QED"

Breitbart News on X - "Jon Stewart and Bernie Sanders agree: The Democrats own the shutdown, and they did it to "protect subsidies for an insurance marketplace that funnels $800 billion a year into the pockets of insurance companies.""

Robert Reich on X - "Open enrollment for ACA plans began yesterday in Idaho. One couple got notice that their monthly premium next year would jump from $51 to $2,232 as subsidies expire. 25,000 Idahoans are expected to be priced out of coverage. This is what's at stake in Trump's shutdown."
Dan ๐™๐™–๐™ญ๐™–๐™ฉ๐™ž๐™ค๐™ฃ ๐™„๐™จ ๐™๐™๐™š๐™›๐™ฉ Behrman Esq๐Ÿ on X - "I think you missed the point. If this is happening because a subsidy is going away, then the insurance was always $2200/mo and that's the scam. Why is the insurance so high? Are they getting $26,400 in benefits every year? Nope. You're looking for the problem in the wrong place."
WindTalker on X - "Sounds like what happened to me when you A-Holes shoved Obamacare down my throat. GFY."
DaveWaveBig on X - "Me too. Went from $546/mo family of 4 including dental with $5 copay and $250 deductible to $1456/mo $7500 deductible no dental."
Wall Street Mav on X - "We are just going back to Obamacare as it was between 2014 thru 2021."

Based Bandita on X - "Okay so if the ‘Affordable Care Act’ was supposed to make insurance affordable, then why are Democrats demanding hundreds of billions in subsidies to keep health insurance from being unaffordable? Notice how it always backfires on them and the truth always comes to light!"

Wall Street Mav on X - "1) Obamacare ACA started 2014. Health insurance prices skyrocketed.
2) By 2021 it was so expensive, Biden and Dems passed temp subsidies to hide the cost of Obamacare.
3) Dec 31, 2025 the 2021 subsidies expire.
Democrats want the temporary 2021 subsidies to continue forever in order to hide how much of a disaster Obamacare has become.   If they could, Democrats would increase the subsidies even more to further hide the disaster of Obamacare policy requirements.  Why is Obamacare ACA messing up health insurance? Before the ACA, the individual health insurance market sold cheaper, less comprehensive plans. This made sense for many people, particularly young people who rarely have any serious issues."

Eric Daugherty on X - "๐Ÿšจ HOLY SMOKES! In a SHOCKING MOVE, the number two House Democrat Katherine Clark said the quiet part out loud regarding the shutdown...SUFFERING is their tool "Of COURSE there will be families that are going to suffer! [...] It is one of the FEW leverage times we have." ๐Ÿคฏ"

Rapid Response 47 on X - "UPDATE: An unhinged @WhipKClark accuses @PressSec of lying after she.... quoted the congresswoman's own words from an interview she did on tape. Democrats are NOT sending their best!"

Democrats on X - "Republicans control the House. Republicans control the Senate. Republicans control the White House. This is their shutdown."
Charles C. W. Cooke on X - "This remains the weirdest shutdown in years. The Democrats shut down the government, and have a set of particular demands to reopen it. They’re clear about those demands, but, at the same time, routinely deny they shut down the government. Own it!"

C3 on X - "Well well well… Judge McConnell donated $700K to Democrats. He runs nonprofit Crossroads Rhode Island that has received $128 million in government funding. McConnell is now demanding POTUS Trump illegally fund SNAP. After he tried to block DOGE cuts. He’s a Dem activist."

Michael White - Arkansas Liberty on X - "My friend just told me his coworker was on the job site pissed about SNAP going away, saying “man now what am I going to do?” My friend asks “Don’t you make too much money for that anyway.” The reply? “I buy $2000 worth of SNAP a month for $500 from so and so. Now I have to pay full price for groceries.”  Is this common? How common?"

Chris Martenson on X - "Any other dutiful, hard-working tax donkeys out there unpleasantly surprised to discover that 1 in 8 Americans don't pay for their groceries?"
Thread by @MorosKostas on Thread Reader App – Thread Reader App - "My spiciest deeply-held view is that being on welfare should void your right to vote until you are off of it (not counting retirement benefits and certain Veteran's programs).  The status quo is too busted. Politicians are incentivized to try and purchase votes by handing out free shit that is paid for by the taxpayers (or increasingly, unsustainable debt). Then people on welfare are incentivized to vote for whoever will keep handing it to them. It's perverse.  Hell, I'd even be OK with a 6 or 12 month "grace period." Maybe you fell on a hard time temporarily and just need some help. Fair enough, I'm cool with such people voting.  But if it's gonna be a long term thing, if you plan to live in part on our tax dollars, you shouldn't get a say in running the country until that changes. When people say "but we had open borders until the 20th century!" This is the big difference. No welfare back then. That incentivizes a very different kind of immigration."

Right Angle News Network on X - "BREAKING - It has been revealed that Democrat Senator Jon Ossoff and other senate Democrats won’t vote to reopen the government because donors are paying them to keep it shut, stating their choice is between keeping it closed for $3 million or reopening it and losing fundraising."

MILO on X - "We cannot let 42 million Americans go hungry"
"We cannot have 42 million Americans condemned to life on handouts. A nudge now will bear the fruit of human flourishing later: Most will secure employment, rather than suffer. We do a great and lasting kindness, for dependence is deadlier to the spirit than hunger is to the body."

BundlebranchblockMD๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ on X - "Democrats close to me have told me that the shutdown is 100% Republicans' fault for not enacting the "nuclear option." In other words, Democrats agree with Trump? Whatever lets the Dems off the hook. ๐Ÿ™„ None of them are allowed to scream about fascism if it does happen."

Ed Krassenstein on X - "BREAKING: Trump Just called for the nuclear option. He’s trying harder and harder to gain more and more power. But he’s not a fascist, right?"
Mo on X - "When Obama pushed the nuclear option, it was hailed as bold leadership. When Trump does the same, it's fascism? The double standard isn't just hypocrisy—it's intellectual dishonesty dressed in moral outrage."
Meanwhile, I saw left wingers claim, before Trump pushed for the nuclear option, that the shutdown was his fault because he could call for the nuclear option but chose not to. You can never win with left wingers

Democrats launch alternative bill to save SNAP funding - "The legislation, led by Sen. Ben Ray Lujรกn (D-N.M.), could draw Democratic support away from a rival bipartisan plan by Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.), which pushes USDA and the Treasury Department to fully fund November benefits under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program — the nation’s largest anti-hunger initiative.  Lujรกn’s bill, on the other hand, would require the administration to fund both SNAP and a separate food aid program serving low-income women and children. It would also require that states be reimbursed for funding benefits during the shutdown...  Their latest move comes after the Trump administration recently concluded it doesn’t have the legal authority to tap a USDA contingency fund to pay for billions of dollars worth of food aid next month."
Left wingers were spreading misleading memes claiming Republicans rejected a standalone bill, so SNAP going down was their fault
Naturally, the crowd yelling about "fascism" and that "no one is above the law" want Trump to break the law and use money he cannot

Illegal Immigrants To Be Hit Hard As SNAP and WIC Benefits Expire - "Of households headed by illegal immigrants, CIS estimated that 59 percent use one or more welfare programs — cash, food assistance, Medicaid, or housing. Illegal immigrant households have especially high use of food programs, with 48 percent enrolled in one or more of these programs — SNAP, WIC, or school lunch/breakfast. In particular, our analysis found that 17 percent of illegal immigrant households used SNAP. In addition to food programs, 18 percent of illegal immigrant households were enrolled in one of the cash programs; 4 percent were using a housing program; and 39 percent used Medicaid. Illegal immigrants often receive welfare on behalf of U.S.-born children, and illegal immigrant children can receive school lunch/breakfast and WIC directly. Some states provide Medicaid to illegal immigrants, and a few offer SNAP. Several million illegal immigrants also have been issued Social Security numbers allowing them to receive cash payments from the earned income tax credit if they work. Many immigrants have modest levels of education and low incomes, so suspension of WIC and SNAP will impact a large share of this population. But this situation raises important policy questions, including whether it makes sense to have an immigration system that allows in so many people who turn to taxpayers to support their children."
But left wingers keep claiming illegal immigrants don't get SNAP and Medicaid

Eric Daugherty on X - "๐Ÿšจ BREAKING: In a jaw-dropping revelation, Sec. Brooke Rollins found 5,000 DEAD PEOPLE getting SNAP, and 500,000 PEOPLE getting SNAP "2 times under the same name."  And that's just what they've confirmed...  "This light has now been shined one of the most CORRUPT, DISFUNCTIONAL programs in American history!"  "80% of able-bodied Americans - they can work, don't have small children, taking care of an elderly parent. They can work, they choose not to work, because they're getting significant benefits from the taxpayer!"  "VERY big announcements coming next week on this...we have a plan to fix it!"  WTF? That is blatant, rampant fraud! So glad it's coming to an end."

Breitbart News on X - ".@SecRollins drops multiple BOMBSHELLS:
-SNAP is going to make EVERY recipient reapply to verify "they can't survive without it"
-Benefits are being paid to nearly 200,000 dead people
-Half a MILLION recipients are double-dipping
"This is just data from 29 mostly red states."

Meme - "The Democrats are starting to eat each other"
Don Winslow: "EIGHT WHITE OLD SENATORS NOT ONE PERSON OF COLOR AMONG THEM LIED AND FUCKED OVER IMO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE. MILLIONS AND MILLIONS WILL LOSE THEIR HEALTH CARE BECAUSE OF THESE OLD, EIGHT WHITE PEOPLE. THIS ISN'T JUST A BAD DECISION. THESE ARE REALLY BAD PEOPLE. LEARN THEIR NAMES."
"8 TRAITORS"
Weird. I thought the shutdown and SNAP ending was literally killing people and it was the Republicans' fault. But of course, it's still their fault for not agreeing to everything the Democrats wanted

The SNAP Cycle and Diabetes Management During a One-Time Change in Disbursement Schedule/a> - "We found that the early disbursement of SNAP benefits in January 2019 resulted in a spike in hyperglycemia four times the rate in a typical month. Further, we found a decrease in both hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia in late February."
This suggests that SNAP increases the chance of recipients getting diabetes. So left wingers defending SNAP recipients buying candy and soda with it are harming them

Give A Shift About Nature | Facebook - "If you want to cut food stamps, remember: 40% of SNAP beneficiaries are kids. Why do you want kids to go hungry?"
Left wingers used to mock right wingers for caring about children. Now they weaponise them for SNAP and Trans mania

Kelly on X - "Them “I’m sick of subsidizing their groceries when mine cost so much” SNAP does not drive up grocery prices It’s inflation, tariffs & corporate greed For every $1 spent on SNAP there’s a $1.50 going back into the economy While you’re blaming the poor, the rich are robbing you"
Mark Hemingway on X - "“For every $1 spent on SNAP there’s a $1.50 going back into the economy” Wow. We should have the government buy everyone’s groceries and grow the economy even more! I wonder why we don’t do this? Oh right, that’s because this is an extremely stupid thing to believe."

Eric Daugherty on X - "๐Ÿšจ HOLY CRAP! It was just revealed that Chuck Schumer behind close doors begged to keep the government shut down to THANKSGIVING, per CNN He called Democrat governors and "influential party leaders" to give him "backup for his strategy." ๐Ÿคฏ Chuck wanted to DESTROY Thanksgiving travel for millions - on top of withholding pay from the troops, important federal programs, and employees.  "Some of those Schumer called told him no. Some just didn’t do it."  Utter insanity. THANK GOD President Trump and the GOP held the line."

Give A Shift About Nature | Facebook - "Trump's BLS isn't going to publish a jobs report for October. I guess the numbers can't be bad if you deny that there are numbers. Checkmate, libs."
Democrats shutdown the government then blame Trump for late numbers. And the base laps it up.
