Own Time Own Target @ Singapore Theatre Festival 2008

"The OCBC Singapore Theatre Festival will begin its run in Aug this year, and I am very proud to say that I will be a part of it, as two of my scripts have been selected to be put up for staging. Here’s a bit more about what to expect:

OWN TIME OWN TARGET: Three New Comedies about Our Boys in Green
Featuring Radio Silence and Full Tank! by Laremy Lee.

    DATE: Wed, 20 Aug - Sun, 24 Aug 2008.
TIME: 8pm (with 3pm matinee shows on Sat and Sun).
    VENUE: Esplanade Theatre Studio.
    PRICE: $30.

Radio Silence is a play that takes place in a jungle, with two main characters - Boon, an officer, and Charlie, his driver. They are on a mission, the objectives of which they are unclear about, and their destination, equally uncertain. In this play, I explore the complexities of human relationships - the power struggles, the absurd rules and structures upon which society - especially military society as a subset of Singaporean society - operates, etc. The themes of communication and miscommunication are, as the title of the script might indicate, a major part of the interactions between the characters in the play, as they try to find their way out of the jungle.
(An excerpt of this play is viewable here.)

Full Tank! is a farce in which four soldiers - Sergeant Leroy and his three men: Ali, Moti and Lim - go Absent Without Official Leave (AWOL) when their tank unexpectedly veers from the training grounds of Lim Chu Kang to… Orchard Road. They go on a journey of disparate proportions, meeting over-accommodating mamasans and verbose pump station attendants as the soldiers try to make their way back to camp. Intertwined with this narrative is a separate but related thread which sees the top brass of Singapore’s army try to recapture an escaped terrorist, and somehow, the four soldiers also manage to get themselves involved, in this (mis)adventure that takes a look at race and politics in our sunny island.
(An excerpt of this play is viewable here.)

I’m also planning to publish these two plays along with a third play called The Duty, which is a monologue on soldiering in Singapore, performed at Short+Sweet Singapore in 2007. More info about the book soon.

Ticket prices are $30 (sans handling fees) but you will get early-bird discounts if you book before 11 July 2008. I’d recommend you book online at the SISTIC website for convenience.

In the meantime, you can receive updates through Facebook (if you use it) at my fan page. You can also join the Facebook event listing here.

Do feel free to contact me if you have any queries. I hope to see you there!"

"Why, then, art Thou come to hinder us? For Thou hast come to hinder us, and Thou knowest that. But dost thou know what will be to-morrow? I know not who Thou art and care not to know whether it is Thou or only a semblance of Him, but to-morrow I shall condemn Thee and burn Thee at the stake as the worst of heretics. And the very people who have to-day kissed Thy feet, to-morrow at the faintest sign from me will rush to heap up the embers of Thy fire...

"The old man has told Him He hasn't the right to add anything to what He has said of old. One may say it is the most fundamental feature of Roman Catholicism, in my opinion at least. 'All has been given by Thee to the Pope,' they say, 'and all, therefore, is still in the Pope's hands, and there is no need for Thee to come now at all... Thou mayest not add to what has been said of old, and mayest not take from men the freedom which Thou didst exalt when Thou wast on earth. Whatsoever Thou revealest anew will encroach on men's freedom of faith; for it will be manifest as a miracle, and the freedom of their faith was dearer to Thee than anything in those days fifteen hundred years ago. Didst Thou not often say then, "I will make you free"?... For fifteen centuries we have been wrestling with Thy freedom, but now it is ended and over for good... now, to-day, people are more persuaded than ever that they have perfect freedom, yet they have brought their freedom to us and laid it humbly at our feet. But that has been our doing. Was this what Thou didst? Was this Thy freedom?'"...

'Man was created a rebel; and how can rebels be happy? Thou wast warned... but Thou didst not listen to those warnings; Thou didst reject the only way by which men might be made happy. But, fortunately, departing Thou didst hand on the work to us.

... Thou didst reply that man lives not by bread alone... Humanity will proclaim by the lips of their sages that there is no crime, and therefore no sin; there is only hunger? "Feed men, and then ask of them virtue!" that's what they'll write on the banner, which they will raise against Thee, and with which they will destroy Thy temple. Where Thy temple stood will rise a new building; the terrible tower of Babel will be built again... They will find us and cry to us, "Feed us, for those who have promised us fire from heaven haven't given it!" And then we shall finish building their tower, for he finishes the building who feeds them. And we alone shall feed them in Thy name, declaring falsely that it is in Thy name... In the end they will lay their freedom at our feet, and say to us, "Make us your slaves, but feed us."... They will be convinced, too, that they can never be free, for they are weak, vicious, worthless, and rebellious... If for the sake of the bread of Heaven thousands shall follow Thee, what is to become of the millions and tens of thousands of millions of creatures who will not have the strength to forego the earthly bread for the sake of the heavenly? Or dost Thou care only for the tens of thousands of the great and strong, while the millions, numerous as the sands of the sea, who are weak but love Thee, must exist only for the sake of the great and strong? No, we care for the weak too. They are sinful and rebellious, but in the end they too will become obedient. They will marvel at us and look on us as gods, because we are ready to endure the freedom which they have found so dreadful and to rule over them- so awful it will seem to them to be free. But we shall tell them that we are Thy servants and rule them in Thy name. We shall deceive them again, for we will not let Thee come to us again. That deception will be our suffering, for we shall be forced to lie...

So long as man remains free he strives for nothing so incessantly and so painfully as to find someone to worship. But man seeks to worship what is established beyond dispute, so that all men would agree at once to worship it. For these pitiful creatures are concerned not only to find what one or the other can worship, but to find community of worship is the chief misery of every man individually and of all humanity from the beginning of time. For the sake of common worship they've slain each other with the sword. They have set up gods and challenged one another, "Put away your gods and come and worship ours, or we will kill you and your gods!" And so it will be to the end of the world, even when gods disappear from the earth; they will fall down before idols just the same... I tell Thee that man is tormented by no greater anxiety than to find someone quickly to whom he can hand over that gift of freedom with which the ill-fated creature is born. But only one who can appease their conscience can take over their freedom... The secret of man's being is not only to live but to have something to live for... Instead of taking men's freedom from them, Thou didst make it greater than ever! Didst Thou forget that man prefers peace, and even death, to freedom of choice in the knowledge of good and evil? Nothing is more seductive for man than his freedom of conscience, but nothing is a greater cause of suffering... Instead of taking possession of men's freedom, Thou didst increase it, and burdened the spiritual kingdom of mankind with its sufferings for ever. Thou didst desire man's free love, that he should follow Thee freely, enticed and taken captive by Thee. In place of the rigid ancient law, man must hereafter with free heart decide for himself what is good and what is evil, having only Thy image before him as his guide.

... So that, in truth, Thou didst Thyself lay the foundation for the destruction of Thy kingdom, and no one is more to blame for it... Are there many like Thee? And couldst Thou believe for one moment that men, too, could face such a temptation?... Thou didst hope that man, following Thee, would cling to God and not ask for a miracle. But Thou didst not know that when man rejects miracle he rejects God too; for man seeks not so much God as the miraculous. And as man cannot bear to be without the miraculous, he will create new miracles of his own for himself, and will worship deeds of sorcery and witchcraft, though he might be a hundred times over a rebel, heretic and infidel. Thou didst not come down from the Cross when they shouted to Thee, mocking and reviling Thee, "Come down from the cross and we will believe that Thou art He." Thou didst not come down, for again Thou wouldst not enslave man by a miracle, and didst crave faith given freely, not based on miracle. Thou didst crave for free love and not the base raptures of the slave before the might that has overawed him for ever. But Thou didst think too highly of men therein, for they are slaves, of course, though rebellious by nature... I swear, man is weaker and baser by nature than Thou hast believed him! Can he, can he do what Thou didst? By showing him so much respect, Thou didst, as it were, cease to feel for him, for Thou didst ask far too much from him... Respecting him less, Thou wouldst have asked less of him. That would have been more like love, for his burden would have been lighter. He is weak and vile. What though he is everywhere now rebelling against our power, and proud of his rebellion? It is the pride of a child and a schoolboy. They are little children rioting and barring out the teacher at school. But their childish delight will end; it will cost them dear. Mankind as a whole has always striven to organise a universal state. There have been many great nations with great histories, but the more highly they were developed the more unhappy they were, for they felt more acutely than other people the craving for world-wide union... Hadst Thou taken the world and Caesar's purple, Thou wouldst have founded the universal state and have given universal peace... Oh, ages are yet to come of the confusion of free thought, of their science and cannibalism. For having begun to build their tower of Babel without us, they will end, of course, with cannibalism... Thou art proud of Thine elect, but Thou hast only the elect, while we give rest to all. And besides, how many of those elect, those mighty ones who could become elect, have grown weary waiting for Thee, and have transferred and will transfer the powers of their spirit and the warmth of their heart to the other camp, and end by raising their free banner against Thee. Thou didst Thyself lift up that banner. But with us all will be happy and will no more rebel nor destroy one another as under Thy freedom. Oh, we shall persuade them that they will only become free when they renounce their freedom to us and submit to us. And shall we be right or shall we be lying? They will be convinced that we are right, for they will remember the horrors of slavery and confusion to which Thy freedom brought them. Freedom, free thought, and science will lead them into such straits and will bring them face to face with such marvels and insoluble mysteries, that some of them, the fierce and rebellious, will destroy themselves, others, rebellious but weak, will destroy one another, while the rest, weak and unhappy, will crawl fawning to our feet and whine to us: "Yes, you were right, you alone possess His mystery, and we come back to you, save us from ourselves!"

... We shall show them that they are weak, that they are only pitiful children, but that childlike happiness is the sweetest of all. They will become timid and will look to us and huddle close to us in fear, as chicks to the hen. They will marvel at us and will be awe-stricken before us, and will be proud at our being so powerful and clever that we have been able to subdue such a turbulent flock of thousands of millions. They will tremble impotently before our wrath, their minds will grow fearful, they will be quick to shed tears like women and children, but they will be just as ready at a sign from us to pass to laughter and rejoicing, to happy mirth and childish song. Yes, we shall set them to work, but in their leisure hours we shall make their life like a child's game, with children's songs and innocent dance... We are told that the harlot who sits upon the beast, and holds in her hands the mystery, shall be put to shame, that the weak will rise up again, and will rend her royal purple and will strip naked her loathsome body. But then I will stand up and point out to Thee the thousand millions of happy children who have known no sin. And we who have taken their sins upon us for their happiness will stand up before Thee and say: "Judge us if Thou canst and darest." Know that I fear Thee not. Know that I too have been in the wilderness, I too have lived on roots and locusts, I too prized the freedom with which Thou hast blessed men, and I too was striving to stand among Thy elect, among the strong and powerful, thirsting "to make up the number." But I awakened and would not serve madness. I turned back and joined the ranks of those who have corrected Thy work. I left the proud and went back to the humble, for the happiness of the humble... If anyone has ever deserved our fires, it is Thou. To-morrow I shall burn Thee."

AntiStomp - We Stomp the Stompers - "Hate being stomped?"

Hamid Karzai's Famous Hat Made From Aborted Lamb Fetuses - "Though the hats are unmistakably dashing, the method of their production is a bit stomach-turning. Shepherds in northern Afghanistan slaughter the mother and then remove the fetus, whose downy fur is incredibly smooth because it has never been exposed to the air or sun. Sometimes shepherds wait for the ewe to give birth before killing the lamb. Each lamb is so small its entire pelt is needed to produce one hat -- and many pelts are needed to make the waist-length karacul coats. "

Prestonwood Minister Arrested In Online Sex Bust - "A minister at one of the largest churches in North Texas was arrested in a sex sting operation in Bryan. Police confirm that Joe Barron was taken into custody after driving more than three hours to have sex with what he thought was a 13-year-old girl. Barron serves as a minister at Prestonwood Baptist Church in Plano. The 52-year-old is a senior minister who works with married adults at the church that has some 26,000 members. Barron had only been with the church for the past 18 months... Church member Susan Lucido said, "It just goes to show that everybody's human." Barron's arrest is actually an answer to her prayers. "It's a sad thing, but it's also a huge blessing for the church," she said. "Two weeks ago, I prayed for protection for the church, and to expose anybody there that needed to be exposed. And it got exposed.""
Fruits, fruits...

Psychic's vision sets off sex-abuse probe - "A Barrie mother of an autistic girl is considering legal action against her local school board after a psychic's prediction to a special educational assistant sparked a sexual abuse report to the Children's Aid Society. "I'm in shock," said Colleen Leduc, 38. "They reported me to Children's Aid because of a psychic. Can you imagine?""

Lost parrot tells veterinarian his address - ""I'm Mr. Yosuke Nakamura," the bird told the veterinarian, according to Uemura. The parrot also provided his full home address, down to the street number, and even entertained the hospital staff by singing songs."

Pringles aren't potato chips, British judge rules - "Procter & Gamble's lawyers argued at a May hearing that Pringles didn't look like a chip, didn't feel like a chip and didn't taste like a chip, according to the judgment. They also maintain that the snack isn't made like a chip because it is cooked from baked dough, not potato slices."
Oh, so THAT'S why they're so regular. Actually I agree Pringles aren't crisps.

the film laboratory - "Those of us who have studied literature are charged with an unusual task. It is to find humanity in inhumanity, to prove the good where none exists, and to bring the equal to every sage, every sinner, and everyone who thought he was cursed. Sadly most of us find it our calling to become teachers for the MOE, book sellers at Kino/Borders or disgruntled assessment book editors. I am proud to be a lit grad."

Domestic Violence on Super Bowl Sunday - "The claim that Super Bowl Sunday is "the biggest day of the year for violence against women" demonstrates how easily an idea congruous with what people want to believe can be implanted in the public consciousness and anointed as "fact" even when it has been fabricated out of whole cloth... A news conference was called in Pasadena, California, the site of the forthcoming Super Bowl game, by a coalition of women's groups. At the news conference reporters were informed that significant anecdotal evidence suggested that Super Bowl Sunday is "the biggest day of the year for violence against women."... Janet Katz, a professor of sociology and criminal justice at Old Dominion University and one of the authors of the study cited during the January 28 conference... 'It certainly doesn't support what those women are saying in Pasadena'... Ringle checked the claim made by Dobisky Associates (the organization that had mailed warnings to women advising them not to stay at home with their husbands on Super Bowl Sunday)... Dobisky's source for this quote was Charles Patrick Ewing... "I never said that," Ewing said... As Sommers concluded, "How a belief in that misandrist canard can make the world a better place for women is not explained.""
The strawfeminists strike again.

History of Battered Women's Shelters - "Erin Pizzey wrote the first book on domestic violence: Scream Quietly, or the Neighbors will Hear (1974). She is recognized as the founder of the movement against domestic violence... She later spent five years in the US and came to believe that there are as many violent women as men. In 1982, she coauthored, with Jeff Shapiro, a book called Prone to Violence, about women's role in domestic violence. It encountered such hostility from feminists that, she says, her life was even threatened... Pizzey says there that the reason the women's movement ignores this problem is because "There's a lot of money in hating men, particularly in the United states--millions of dollars. It isn't a politically good idea to threaten the huge budgets for women's refuges by saying that some of the women who go into them aren't total victims. Anyway, the activists aren't there to help women come to terms with what's happening in their lives. They're there to fund their budgets, their conferences, their traveling abroad, and their statements against men""
And again.

Lady, your slip is showing - "A Jan. 23 congressional study claimed that salaries for women managers in seven out of 10 industries examined had declined from 1995 to 2000. Uncritical newspapers rushed to announce that the wage gap between men and women had widened. But National Review columnist Betsy Hart took the time to examine the study commissioned by Reps. Carolyn Maloney, D-N.Y., and John Dingell, D-Mich. She found it to be a "biased and highly-emotionalized reinterpretation"... Maloney explained that the existence of wage discrimination was considered a fact and the study had been a search for the supporting data... Anyone familiar with what passes for statistics within feminism will not be surprised by the willful corruption of data... A much-cited study entitled Prostitution, Violence and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, collected data from streetwalkers in four "strolls" that were notorious for drug use and violence. Yet the conclusions of the study comment on all prostitutes, including high-paid call girls. In short, it uses an unrepresentative sample to draw broad conclusions about a general population... "studies which do control for all relevant factors continually show that the wage gap between men and women virtually or totally disappears."... Consider a "fact" popularized several years ago by feminist Naomi Wolf: 150,000 American women die each year of anorexia. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, this would make anorexia the fourth-leading cause of death in both males and females... The actual death rate is closer to 100."

Working with Violent Women

"Erin Pizzey was the founder of a women's shelter in Chiswick, England, the first modern battered women's shelter in the world. She found that of the first 100 women who came to her shelter, 62 were as or more violent than the partners they tried to escape from -- only to return to their partners time and again because of their addiction to pain and violence, violence that they persistently did their best to bring about...

There are women involved in emotionally and/or physically violent relationships who express and enact disturbance beyond the expected (and acceptable) scope of distress. Such individuals, spurred on by deep feelings of vengefulness, vindictiveness, and animosity, behave in a manner that is singularly destructive; destructive to themselves as well as to some or all of the other family members, making an already bad family situation worse. These women I have found it useful to describe as 'family terrorists.' In my experience, men also are capable of behaving as 'family terrorists' but male violence tends to be more physical and explosive. We have had thousands of international studies about male violence but there is very little about why or how women are violent. There seems to be a blanket of silence over the huge figures of violence expressed by women. Because 'family terrorism' is a tactic largely used by women and my work in the domestic violence field is largely with women, I address this problem discussing only my work with women...

The terrorist is the family member whose moods reign supreme in the family, whose whims and actions determine the emotional climate of the household. In this setting, the terrorist could be described as the family tyrant, for within the family, this individual maintains the control and power over the other members' emotions.

The family well may be characterised as violent, incestuous, dysfunctional, and unhappy, but it is the terrorist or tyrant who is primarily responsible for initiating conflict, imposing histrionic outbursts upon otherwise calm situations, or (more subtly and invisibly) quietly manipulating other family members into uproar through guilt, cunning taunts, and barely perceptive provocations. (The quiet manipulative terrorist usually is the most undetected terrorist. Through the subtle creation of perpetual turmoil, this terrorist may virtually drive other family members to alcoholism, to drug-addiction, to explosive behaviour, to suicide. The other family members, therefore, are often misperceived as the 'family problem' and the hidden terrorist as the saintly woman who 'puts up with it all.')

While the family remains together, however miserable that 'togetherness' might be, the terrorist maintains her power. However, it is often the separation of the family that promises to rend the terrorist's domain and consequently to lessen her power. Family dissolution, therefore, often is the time when the terrorist feels most threatened and most alone, and, because of that, most dangerous...

Invariably, the terrorist can be regarded as a 'violence prone' individual. I define a 'violence prone' woman as a woman who, while complaining that she is the innocent victim of the malice and aggression of all other relationships in her life, is in fact a victim of her own violence and aggression...

To the family terrorist, there is only one wronged, one sufferer, only one person in pain, and this person is the terrorist herself. The terrorist has no empathy and feels only her own pain. In this manner, the terrorist's capacity for feeling is narcissistic, solipsistic, and in fact pathological...

In my experience both men and women are equally guilty of the above behaviour, but on the whole, because it is men's dysfunctional behaviour that is studied and reported upon, people do not realise that to the same extent women are equally guilty of this type of violent behaviour...

Among true terrorists, however, threats of suicide can be seen to serve a largely manipulative role. In short, the terrorist says, 'If you can't do as I tell you, I will kill myself.' Whether suicide remains only a threat or is realised, the true terrorist uses suicide not so much as an expression of desperate grief but as a weapon to be wielded against others...

I must reiterate at this stage, that both men and women are capable of terrorist tactics but men tend to behave in a more physically violent manner within the family. Women, as I have shown use far more subtle tactics ie. that of the terrorist as opposed to outright war...

In a recent case, a Mr. Roberts described to me how, during his marriage, he and his children faced a daily onslaught of verbal abuse from his wife. Mrs. Roberts was also physically violent to the children. Now that he has asked for a divorce, she is making use of every weapon in her arsenal. In the children's presence, she has used drugs and drunk alcohol to the point of extreme intoxication. She has staged several unsuccessful suicide attempts in front of the children, threatened over the telephone to 'do something stupid,' promised to kill Mr. Roberts new partner, and assured Mr. Roberts that when she has finished with him he will not have a penny to his name...

To limit the terrorist's feelings of omnipotence, there are many effective measures. The guiding principle, as in the handling of political terrorists, must be 'There is no negotiating with terrorists.' Endless telephone calls, conversations, confrontation, trial 'get-back-togethers,' correspondence, visitations, gestures of appeasement, and efforts to placate the terrorist's demands, all serve to reinforce the terrorist's belief that she is accomplishing something. Only determined resolution in the face of terrorism shows the terrorist that her power is limited...

Mrs Roberts soon found for herself a feminist therapist staunchly supporting the erroneous belief 'All feelings (and therefore behaviours) are valid.' Mrs Roberts is told by this therapist that she has a right to feel and to behave in any manner she chooses, in callous disregard for the devastation inflicted upon the children. Such reassurances serve only to fortify the terrorist's already pathological, solipsistic, and eternally self-justifying perspective."

With all the talk about discrimination, representing diversity, giving everyone an equal voice and coming up with material that everyone can use, one part of an interview with Paul Joannides, who wrote "The Guide To Getting It On", was interesting:

Gay Rick: Am I correct in assuming you're a heterosexual male?... There were points where I just felt that it was very, written from the point of view of a heterosexual male?... Why did you choose to go the route you did, instead of saying "you and your partner", versus "you and your wife"?

Paul Joannides: I was living in West Hollywood... for those of you who don't know, West Hollywood is - well...

Gay Rick: You can say 'gay'. It's gay.

Paul Joannides: ... When I was first working on the book, early on, I went down to local bookstores called "The Different Light", a very large gay and lesbian bookstore. And I met with a couple of managers and said "yeah, I'm writing this book on sex and I'd like to really make it for everybody, no matter what your orientation, and I wondered if you had any thoughts?"

And talk about being blown away.

They looked at me and said: "Unless you wake up every morning thinking about cock and thinking about sucking cock, don't do us any favors... Don't try to write another committee book. It would be just as insulting as the last 50 committee books on sex."

And I was really blown away, but I actually thought about it, and, uh, when I looked around, there really weren't any books I could find that actually had any kind of a straight male voice. They were committee books. They were exactly as you said. Your partner could be anybody. They were, so, I followed that and went with it and that was the voice the book ended up having. But you're absolutely right. It is a straight male voice, and it's written for heterosexual or bisexual couples. It's not, it's just not for a gay audience.

To give you an idea of the struggle we had, I wanted to include more pictures of gay men having sex. When we would test those illustrations with straight male audiences, they basically said: "We really wouldn't be interested in that book unless we had to buy it".

And then when we showed the book to gay males, they say, "Eugh, look at all that pussy. That is so gross".

So what we found and what researchers are now telling us in the last couple of years... is for males who are straight, they tend to be rigidly straight, and males who are gay, they tend to be rigidly gay. They don't like that much to crossover. The idea that we're all bisexual doesn't seem to be holding much water.

And so I think we either have a book, you need to speak to someone deep down, you either do the one or the other. I don't think you can have both.

...

A book with a straight male voice would be able to speak more to straight males about being gay, about gay males.

One thing this made me think about was a comment that sex education in Singapore was Victorian in that the genders are always separated, and that this is unhealthy.

Yet, there is a reason why body searches have to be conducted by personnel of the same sex as the one being searched, male rape counsellors are very rare (I can't find any examples) and many women's shelters don't allow men inside.

Separation and difference do not automatically lead to discrimination and inferiority.
"It is of course not difficult for an imaginative person so to conjure up the Person of Christ before himself that the picture shall take a kind of sensuous distinctness... Someone thinks he sees Jesus Himself, and consequently begins to commune with Him. But what such a person communes with in this fashion is not Christ Himself but a picture that the man's own imagination has put together." - Wilhelm Herrmann, The Communion of the Christian with God

Church Group Offers Homosexual New Life In Closet

"A church group offers a homosexual a new life in the closet.

It’s the Onion radio news, I’m Doyle Redland.

Three years ago, born again Christian Dennis Lindaman was a self described homosexual “party slut,” but now thanks to Reclamation Ministries, his homosexual yearnings are safely in the closet, and he’s entered into a tortured loveless marriage to fellow Christian Diane Lindaman.

“Jesus has given me a fresh start. When I lock myself in the bathroom with the light off, crying... for hours on end, I know he’s there watching over me, ready to condemn me to eternal hellfire if I give in to my ferocious unquenchable desire to make love to other men.”

Reclamation Ministries founder Reverend Henry Spotswood says “the closet of the Lord has room enough for even the most vile of homos.”

Japan has the oldest pottery in the world, dating to 10,000 BC. This notwithstanding, it was very amusing that there was a section with the labels "objects imported from China or Korea in the Yayoi period" and "objects which were not imported from China in the Yayoi period". Hah.
