The Bathtub Fallacy and Risks of Terrorism - "Bloomberg economics commentator Justin Fox is tired of being told that his chances of getting killed in a terrorist attack are (much) lower than his chances of slipping, falling, and dying in a bathtub. Implication being—suck it up, people, and quit being such irrational babies when it comes to assessing risks from terrorism. Having also grown weary of hearing some version of this following terrorist attacks or government security responses, I was interested to find out why Fox (who's a very smart guy) thinks such comparisons should be reckoned a bad form of argument. Why does he think comparing fatal bathtub accidents and fatal terrorist incidents is fundamentally inapt, to the point of calling it "The Bathtub Fallacy"? (For those who don't know his work, Justin Fox is a sophisticated business and financial journalist with a keen understanding of the literatures of statistics and risk assessment, and he's also the author of the outstanding revisionist history of the “efficient market hypothesis," The Myth of the Rational Market, 2009.) What's “The Bathtub Fallacy,” according to Fox? Following a terrorist incident or government counter-measure, he says (quoting a recent Financial Times (paywalled) column by its principal political columnist, Janan Ganesh), statistics are “dug out to show that fewer Westerners perish in terror attacks than in everyday mishaps. Slipping in the bath is a tragicomic favourite. We chuckle, share the data and wait for voters and politicians to see sense.”"

"Whataboutism" is simple deflection, against an argument which does in fact render your original argument meaningless. Now, if someone had been arguing that medieval Europeans were better than everyone else, then, the revelation that Europeans were racist would be a salient point, and the "whataboutist" argument would hold water if someone tried to point out Islamic racism as a counter-argument. But 9 times out of 10, the original argument made by Western scholars is based on the idea that Europeans were in fact worse than other groups. Sorry, dear colleagues, but maybe we should reinstate basic logical training in high school and college..."

It turns out like a week prior or something my university implemented a new program called "cultural spaces" where certain study halls would only be for non-white students. According to Manhattan's grading, this behavior would have no effect on a school's score, but if some jew had something mean said to them then that would. What a joke."

4. She then tried to sue Miss USA, accusing them of breaching her privacy and not respecting her "values" along with libel and slander. Miss USA countersued to get back loans she took for breast implants and other things. During the trial a SEX TAPE she recorded at the age of 17 emerged, which resulted in her dropping of the lawsuit. The hypocrisy...
5. For her repeated lies and breaches, she was fired from Miss USA. She blamed it on her "values" and "religious discrimination." Donald Trump initially defended her but then agreed to firing her.
6. She went on Larry King Live. Larry King rightly asked her why she settled her lawsuit with Miss USA if she is on the right side of things. She walked off stage.
7. In the COVID era, she became politically active and supported Trump. Last year, she became a Catholic (supposedly).
8. Trump gave her a new chance and appointed her to the Religious Liberty Commission together with other Catholics. What he didn't know was that she was getting close with anti-semitic people and organizations, which clearly goes against the foundations of the Religious Liberty Commission. She defended and made anti-Jewish remarks. After backlash, she said she was being persecuted for her Catholic faith. There are multiple Catholics on the Religious Liberty Commission...
9. She wore a Palestine flag and met with the MUSLIM BROTHERHOOD-LINKED CAIR which openly supported her. She thanked them. CAIR is an advocate for Islamists and has a long history of Muslim Brotherhood ideas and ties.
10. After her repeated fake victim-playing and antisemitism, masked as Anti-Zionism, she was removed from the Commission. She then blamed it on religious persecution due to her "Catholic faith." (while multiple Catholics are still on the Commission) and started attackiny Donald Trump, the very same man who gave her a second chance.

Why Belgium is sending in the army to defend its streets - "Soldiers have been deployed to bolster security around Jewish sites and neighborhoods in Brussels and Antwerp, following a spate of clumsy but troubling attacks across Belgium and the Netherlands. Synagogues have been targeted with arson and a Jewish school struck by an explosion... After deploying the army, Theo Francken, Belgium’s effective and plain-talking defense minister, declared Antwerp ‘a little safer again and the Jewish community too’. One suspects the reassurance is aimed as much at a jittery public as the Jewish community itself. While the attacks were amateurish – the work, it seems, of poorly organized youths rather than seasoned extremists – they have taken place in a country already uneasy about its security. Dutch police, meanwhile, have arrested a handful of teenage suspects (some with Dutch-Caribbean backgrounds, according to the Dutch daily, De Telegraaf) in connection with the arson attack in Rotterdam. The same shady group that claimed responsibility for an arson attack on London ambulances owned by a Jewish charity, Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamia (HAYI), also said it was responsible for the attacks across the Low Countries. Experts do not know who is actually behind the incidents. Organized crime groups in the Netherlands frequently hire youths with migrant backgrounds to carry out jobs. HAYI’s statements reportedly contain errors in Arabic, suggesting they have been written by a non-native speaker – or at least someone lacking sophistication. That is not much comfort though to Jews in the region. There is another factor at play here in Belgium. It has justified deploying its military after the most recent attacks, but the return of soldiers to the streets has been months in the making. It was a move that had been delayed by protracted political wrangling over legal frameworks and rules of engagement... Belgium’s cities, and Brussels in particular, have in recent years acquired a reputation for lawlessness. Drug-related violence has crept into public view; firearms no longer remain in the underworld’s shadows. The police, by most accounts, are overstretched – one could even argue outgunned. And so the military is stepping into the breach. They are cheaper, readily available, better armed, well trained and, to many, reassuringly visible. There is a precedent here. After the Paris attacks in 2015, Belgium’s streets quickly filled with paratroopers in balaclavas. The deployment lasted until 2021 and had one excellent side effect: it reduced crime. Going back further still, the same happened in the 1980s, when troops were deployed after the elusive Brabant Killers terrorized the Greater Brussels area, resulting in 28 fatalities. However, the policy is not without its critics. Military unions dislike the lack of clear legal protections for their members, and have warned that soldiers risk being used as a cut-price police. The so-called “rules of engagement” remain, by all accounts, a work in progress. Talk of giving the military expanded powers, from identity checks to arrests, has alarmed civil libertarians and legal experts. The soldiers deployed in the past did not have a clear mandate. They were trained for war, not for the delicate ambiguities of civilian policing on a busy city street. To blur that line is to invite confusion at best. As one union representative observed, a misstep just beyond the letter of an order could leave an individual soldier personally exposed to legal risk – a heavy burden for a domestic deployment. Yet the federal government appears willing to take that risk, with security in Brussels spiraling out of control and the capital itself struggling with a near-constant political crisis. Deploying troops to back up local police may give Belgium’s federal government some leverage in improving the situation, especially given Brussels’s standing in the European Union. And so Belgium finds itself, once again, in a familiar place: a state seeking to project strength while at the same time quietly acknowledging its own limitations when it comes to policing its own neighborhood."

Cavemen hunted with biological weapons 60,000 years ago - "Cavemen used poison-tipped arrows tens of thousands of years earlier than thought, scientists have found.  Archaeologists found traces of well-known plant poisons on Stone Age quartz arrowheads in a prehistoric South African rock shelter dating back some 60,000 years.  The finds are thought to be the earliest known use of biological weapons, with previous evidence of hunters using poison stretching back only around 35,000 years. The discovery bolsters arguments that early humans had sophisticated thinking and planning comparable with modern people, because of the skill and knowledge needed to prepare such weapons."

Metal detectorist’s Roman brooch ‘discovery’ was an eBay buy - "A metal detectorist who claimed to have discovered a valuable Roman brooch has admitted he bought it from eBay.  Jason Price, 54, was paid £5,000 to display the fake artefact at a museum, even though he had ordered it through the online marketplace, Lincolnshire Police said. The force said over several years, Price submitted a number of artefacts to Lincolnshire county council under the Portable Antiquities Scheme, including Roman coins which were found to not be genuine.  Artefacts previously submitted by Price were also tested for their authenticity and concerns were raised to the police.  The force said Price claimed to have found the Leasingham horse brooch in the Lincolnshire village of Leasingham in 2019, which led to a change in the historic understanding of Roman brooches in Britain and was classed a significant find.  The brooch, which was described as a “once-in-a-lifetime find”, had generated national interest after Price’s “discovery”."

National Trust ‘turned Dorset beach beloved by Enid Blyton into rubbish dump’ - "The National Trust has been accused of turning a seaside beach beloved by Enid Blyton into a “horrific eyesore” after removing its sea defences exposed an old rubbish tip.  The conservation body is carrying out a controversial “managed retreat” policy at Middle Beach in Studland, Dorset, so that the water can reclaim the land.  Engineers took out sea defences at the beach, which was a favourite of the Famous Five author, last September to “allow nature to take its course”... In 2023, the trust demolished Britain’s oldest beach café on top of the small cliff despite overwhelming opposition against the move. They originally planned to replace it with a “burger van”.  Although the building was 60ft back from the edge, the organisation claimed it was at risk of falling into the sea and so had to be razed to the ground.  Andrew Parsons, a nearby resident who is a civil engineer, said: “If it was a building site and this waste was unearthed, Environmental Health would come down on them.  “The National Trust are doing this stupid process of returning it to nature when they should be preserving buildings like the old café.   “Anybody could have seen this would happen and they have shown an incredible lack of foresight.”"

Erectile difficulties are often blamed on porn. But research actually finds that, if anything, men who use porn tend to report better erectile function. So what does cause ED? : r/psychologyofsex - "First, there are the usual suspects--aging, cardiovascular disease, chronic illnesses (e.g., diabetes), obesity, overuse of alcohol, and medication side effects. Numerous biological factors can contribute to erectile problems, often by impacting blood flow and hormone levels.  But ED isn't just a biological phenomenon. It's also impacted by numerous psychosocial factors, from performance anxiety to relationship problems to mental health issues (e.g., depression, anxiety). There are also many lesser-known causes of ED, which are discussed in this podcast, such as early attachment wounds. For example, research has found that men who experience attachment-disrupting events in childhood (e.g., loss of a parent) are more likely to develop erectile problems in adulthood.  As for porn, despite lots of claims about "porn-induced erectile dysfunction," the research doesn't really support this idea. Studies have found that there's no significant association between porn use and erectile problems, and some research has found that porn users actually demonstrate enhanced arousal to sexual stimuli. While porn is the easy target to blame, it's not necessarily the right one. ED is complex and multifaceted."

What the right gets right - "one thing the right gets right is a patriotic attitude toward The United States of America.  I have read and re-read and wrestled with Alasdair MacIntyre’s essay “Is Patriotism A Virtue?” many times over the years. He says that most people think patriotism is a virtue, but that liberals struggle to develop a coherent explanation of why that should be... most people on the contemporary American left are skeptical of, if not outright hostile to, the idea of patriotism... conservatives have a generally clearer sense of history... Progressives typically characterize their stance on this as being that it’s important to tell people about the darker aspects of history. And they’re right — it is a good idea for people to learn about those things. But I think the standard progressive read of this gets the figure and the ground backwards. The implication of a lot of these takes on episodes of violence, bigotry, displacement, and cruelty in American history is that these episodes are what’s distinctive about the United States of America.  But if you read the history of anywhere, you’ll see that it’s not like there’s some other country where you wouldn’t say “it’s important for people to learn about the darker aspects of our history.” History is dark!... It’s naive to view our sociocultural antecedents here in the United States as flawless, shining heroes, but it’s also naive to think the violence and brutality of American history is what’s unique about it, rather than the fact that we’ve settled into a prosperous and liberal status quo. The related thing that conservatives get right is a sense that good things are vulnerable and it’s worth worrying about wrecking everything.  Martin Luther King Jr.’s mantra, paraphrasing Theodore Parker, that “the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice” is a nice bit of motivational speaking. But this often leads progressives to the view that there is a strong and inherent directionality to history, and thus that any noisy movement for reform with adequate progressive branding must be good. You hear a lot with regard to the Gaza protests that the people complaining are just the same as the people who complained about every good and virtuous social movement of the past. Implicit is the sense that there is no such thing as a social movement that was bad.  But Communism, to cite probably the most important example, was really bad!... A century ago, eugenics had sterling progressive credentials. More recently, and less dramatically, thousands of people were murdered as a result of progressive over-enthusiasm for de-policing.   The thing that conservatives get right about this isn’t just that far-left activists are sometimes wrong about things, but that mainstream liberals are, by disposition, too indulgent of far-left activists... The view here is that the important thing is to position yourself on the side of reform, rather than to ask too many questions about the precise contents of the reform... conservatives are right to think that, in the context of history, we have things pretty good and that we should be cautious about overturning the apple cart without being quite rigorous in our thinking.  As any good patriot knows, “all men are created equal.”  I think everyone is also aware that it is not literally the case that everyone is created equal... those with strong egalitarian normative commitments tend to shy away from making inegalitarian factual assessments of people. This is annoying, because nothing about the fact that people aren’t equal undermines the idea that their interests deserve equal consideration. If you read John Rawls, he acknowledges the “natural facts” of human inequality that are beyond the reach of justice. But in a practical sense, there is considerable pressure to talk as if everyone is literally equal. Daniel Chandler’s new book on the contemporary application of Rawlsian ideas talks about the natural facts point explicitly. But then he offhandedly cites the fact that “in countries like the UK and USA, for example, someone whose parents earn £10,000 more than their friend’s parents will, on average, go on to earn £5,000 more than their friend” as an illustration of how material inequalities unfairly perpetuate across generations. He doesn’t ask how much of this is about material resources and how much is genetic. Surely the answer is “some of both,” but especially if you want to undertake a big drive for fair equality of opportunity, you need to delve into the issues — issues that progressives are reluctant to engage with in any real way.  You also see this in the fairly perverse impulse on the left to look at each individual example of a rich businessman who doesn’t want to pay higher taxes or comply with stricter regulations and decide that the person in question is stupid or secretly a fraud. It would be convenient if every single rich person who prefers lower taxes was also a moron who succeeded in life purely through dumb luck. But is that remotely plausible? It’s certainly not the official case for egalitarian policy — it just follows nicely from an egalitarian ethic. And unfortunately, it leads to a whole twisted worldview around economic growth... Once upon a time, of course, socialists argued that central planning would make for a more prosperous economy than capitalism. Or else they argued that socialism would emerge only after capitalism had solved all problems of objective scarcity and triggered a crisis period of overabundance. But at a certain point, people started suggesting that degrowth could be a virtue of socialism. Or that the real solution to our ecological problems is for everyone to be poor.  This is dumb, and plenty of people on the left (even the far left) know that degrowth is dumb, but the fact is, it’s a live controversy on the left in a way that it is not on the right. There is, of course, more to life than the monolithic pursuit of economic growth, but it’s a genuinely massive conceptual error to see growth as undesirable or to be indifferent toward it."

Outrage over Islamic group Hizb ut-Tahrir's shocking comments as it continues to operate in Australia - despite terrorist group label overseas and ASIO concerns - "An Islamic group which has been deemed a terrorist organisation in multiple countries faces calls to be banned from Australia after it publicly declared the 'West sucks blood from humanity'.  Hizb ut-Tahrir Australia is now under intense fire over the public rally it held in November, just three weeks before the horrific Bondi Beach attack which left 15 people dead.  Multiple members of the group took the stage to deliver explosive messages, including 'sharia law is the blueprint of a harmonious society' and 'Islam is the only solution for Muslims and non-Muslims alike'.  The controversial conference 'Islam: The Change the World Desperately Needs' was held at The Highline Venue in Bankstown, south-west Sydney, on November 23.  Various speakers slammed the 'impacts of Western civilisation', accusing 'capitalism of weakening the influence of Islam'.   Radical cleric Mohamad Trad, who notoriously called for a Muslim army and an Islamic state with sharia law under a 'final solution' in 2023, spoke at the conference.  'The ugly face of this capitalistic, liberal, secular, capitalist ideology. Political ideology and closed-mindedness: the Left and Right have become more alike - "in the United States, conservatives generally score higher on self-reported closed-mindedness compared to their liberal counterparts. However, as Kemmelmeier explains, the size of this difference has changed significantly from 1948 to 2019.  “What we found was that in the late 1940s, there was a relatively more pronounced correlation between people who described themselves as being more conservative also identified themselves as being more closed-minded,” said Kemmelmeier. “Over time, however, that correlation becomes smaller and smaller, and today it is less than one-percent of the entire variation.”"
Left wingers are no longer more open minded than right wingers. Given that most left wingers from 10 years ago would be considered "far right" today, that's no surprise. But this won't stop left wingers continuing to report outdated research as if it reflects contemporary realities.

As a lawyer, Faisal Mirza pushed judges to adopt racial reasoning. Now on the bench, he uses that reasoning to toss out evidence

There is a judge on the Ontario Superior Court of Justice whose signature move is letting violent men walk free because of racism. One of the architects of race-based sentencing, his name is Faisal Mirza, and he was appointed to the bench by former prime minister Justin Trudeau in 2022.

Mirza’s flourish of race-based acquittals is not a case of a judge gone rogue: indeed, it’s perfectly on-brand. He was writing about the need for more racial considerations in the Canadian justice system in 2001, before he even became a lawyer. Back then, he argued in the Osgoode Hall Law Journal that mandatory minimum sentences for drug and weapons offences would be racist because of the disproportionate impact they’d have on Black people.

Toronto police, he asserted, were racist because of the arrest statistics they produced: in 1988, Black individuals comprised 51 per cent of drug arrests, 82 per cent of mugging arrests and 55 per cent of purse snatching arrests. This, he said, was evidence of over-targeting. He concluded that more mandatory minimums would exacerbate the effect, because the threat of being convicted on a charge with a guaranteed jail term would disproportionately pressure Black accused persons to make plea deals and forfeit the opportunity to expose racist police at trial.

This became a career pursuit. When the Supreme Court was deciding whether to strike down the mandatory minimum for illegally possessing a loaded firearm in 2014, he argued as an intervener in the case that its disproportionate impact on Black individuals needed to be taken into account. The court ultimately ruled that this mandatory minimum was unconstitutional.

In 2018, Mirza laid the foundation for Ontario’s racial sentencing regime. He was the defence lawyer of Kevin Morris, a Black man who was convicted of various firearms offences. They were lucky to draw the hyper-progressive, destructively lenient Shaun Nakatsuru for a judge. Mirza filed two racial context reports about Morris and Black people as evidence, and the judge emphatically agreed to consider them. He settled on a 15-month sentence to account for the racial factors, even though three years was considered the starting point. On appeal, the Ontario Court of Appeal made racial considerations in sentencing the province-wide rule in 2021.

In 2019, he was also an intervening lawyer in the Supreme Court case of R. v. Le, advocating for racial considerations in assessing the legality of police searches, which the court agreed with.

In 2020, he co-launched a non-profit that wrote pre-sentence reports for non-white criminals, and for Black offenders in particular. It started as an optional service that defence lawyers could use, but it became essential in 2021, when the Ontario Court of Appeal ordered the province’s judges to give racial discounts to Black offenders if the individual’s criminal conduct could be somehow connected to racism and its nebulous cousin, “systemic racism.” For that work, and for its contributions to the anti-racism movement, it won two federal government grants totalling $780,000.

It was also in 2021 that Mirza, while representing the Criminal Lawyers’ Association, succeeded in convincing the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal to adopt racial sentencing in the case of R. v. Anderson. The court quoted his submissions: “It is time that the distinct mistreatment of Black people in society be given its due recognition in criminal sentencing.”

Mirza was rewarded by the feds with a judicial seat in 2022. Now a judge on the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, he’s able to put his principles into practice.

In 2024, Mirza decided the case of a middle-aged Indigenous man who sexually abused his girlfriend’s daughter between the ages 11 of 13 by forcibly kissing her, fondling her breasts and genitals, and sexually assaulting her with his mouth. The Crown asked for a sentence between 4.5 and 5.5 years, but after Mirza considered the impact of colonialism and racism, he settled on three years.

In 2025, Mirza presided over the case of a Jamaican-Canadian pimp with a history of criminal activity who trafficked a semi-homeless Indigenous woman. He pegged the starting point for the sentence at five years, but shaved a year off to address the man’s personal circumstances — primarily racism, which cumulatively put the offender at “higher risk for negative decisions and involvement in crime.”

It was around that time that Mirza started throwing evidence out because of “racism.” In one case, police had detained the occupants of a car idling in a sketchy motel parking lot at 3 a.m. whose licence plate had been flagged by the gang unit. Police repeatedly asked him to exit the vehicle for a sobriety check, and the man — who was actually wanted for a stabbing at Tim Horton’s weeks earlier — refused; police broke his window, and when he still refused to exit, they tased him. After a struggle to subdue the man, during which he tried to put the vehicle in gear, police found a loaded firearm on the ground next to the driver’s side. This triggered a search of the car that turned up cocaine. The man was on a no-weapons order.

Mirza went on to rule that police actions constituted “racist mistreatment,” and excluded all evidence, from questioning to the loaded gun. The car was associated with a black male and gang “flags,” which the judge found to be the reason for arrest; the officers didn’t immediately identify the man (in Mirza’s view, they jumped to a racist conclusion); the officers behaved as if the vehicle’s occupant was dangerous (not unreasonable, considering it was gang-flagged with tinted windows, and not incorrect, considering the loaded gun). Mirza also chastized the police for not reading the man his rights as he resisted arrest (though it’s appropriate to wait until the situation is under control).

The arrest still deserved scrutiny, but Mirza’s diagnosis of racism tilted the calculation of whether to exclude evidence strongly in the accused’s favour: “When a court finds racial profiling or racist mistreatment the evidence must be excluded.”

In January, Mirza issued another judgment tossing out evidence for men caught possessing loaded firearms on the basis of racism. In that case, a victim had reported being robbed by two Black men in a red BMW, possibly with a gun, and provided the licence plate number and the robbers’ associated address. Police found the car in the parking lot of that address and towed it away for investigation. As another officer went to the building superintendent’s office in hopes of finding the owner, and soon enough, the owner came to the office with two companions, hoping to track down his car.

The officer, outnumbered, tried to detain the men on suspicion of robbery. The owner tried to run off, and in the ensuing scramble, a loaded handgun fell from his waistband. The officer held the man on the ground until backup arrived, but did not read him his rights in that time — a fatal delay for the case, in the eyes of the judge.

The whole interaction, he found, was tainted by racism: the officer “decided to dominate the Applicant physically and disregard of his rights because he was Black,” he wrote, downplaying the dangerous situation and the description-matching suspects.

To his credit, there have been instances where Mirza refrained from applying a racial discount, and from tossing out evidence because of racism, but it doesn’t excuse the other times when he let his biases reign. It’s undeniable that he has a habit of projecting racism in assessing any interaction with the state and undermining public safety with his assumptions. One day, it’s going to end up getting someone hurt — if it hasn’t already.

Animal House - "Democratic Representative Dan Goldman accused President Donald Trump of having been “credibly accused” of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old minor, and alleged that the Justice Department is withholding related records from the public. The “credible accusation” in question involves an unverified allegation dating back to the 1980s that was investigated by the Biden DOJ. Goldman and Representative Ted Lieu called for a special prosecutor to further investigate.  It is remarkable to watch the left run this same playbook again, especially after it has come back to bite them in the ass time and time again.  According to the FBI documents, this is an uncorroborated accusation that surfaced in 2018 and 2019 regarding something that allegedly occurred in the 1980s. The accusation follows the same pattern as the E. Jean Carroll case, pick something that happened 30 years ago that has never been identified, then publicize sketchy accusations made by credibility challenged individuals that Trump, his sons, Ivanka (who was born in 1981 and would have been between 0 and 8 years old when this allegedly happened) and approximately 30 to 40 other individuals, including Alan Dershowitz and Elon Musk, attended what was essentially a sex-slave market featuring underage girls. For those who haven’t seen it, one part of the accusation is that Trump “measured the children’s vulva and vaginas by entering a finger…”  That’s the level of salaciousness.  Yesterday’s breathless headlines from the left claimed that the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times “confirmed” accusations initially reported by PBS. What those outlets confirmed was not that the events occurred, but simply that the accusations appeared in the documents. That is all. The response from Democratic officials has been swift. This morning, I awoke to a video — sent to me by my personal AWFUL (the teacher I have written about with whom I have been attempting to reason — of Representative Yassimin Ansari grabbing a little TV time by making additional fact-free accusations. I responded with a clip from James King interviewing another young AWFUL, who said she had “deduced” Trump’s guilt. It was telling that my personal AWFUL used the exact same word. Neither of them deduced anything from an uncorroborated, evidence-free accusation. At best, they extrapolated a conclusion from their own emotional biases. There is nothing in evidence with sufficient weight to justify further investigation.  The broader reality is this: President Trump is the most investigated, most surveilled, and most accused president in American history. His life has been examined under a partisan microscope every day for the past decade. One might reasonably conclude that if Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, Merrick Garland, Alvin Bragg, Reid Hoffman, or any other Democratic operative had proof to back any of these claims, it would have surfaced at some point over the past eight years when they would have been the most politically useful. The left has also mastered a particular rhetorical trap: dismissing specific, verifiable details in favor of “the bigger idea.” The political right, by contrast, remains ensnared in a world where every sentence is parsed and negative intent is assigned to every word. This is a form of offensive emotional reasoning known as “Kafkatrapping,” defined as: your refusal to acknowledge that you are guilty of [some charge] simply confirms that you are guilty of it.  The burden of proof is applied unequally. Conservatives and Republicans are not afforded the same evidentiary standard in the court of public opinion as they are in a court of law. This dynamic was crystallized during the Clarence Thomas hearings, when NPR’s Nina Totenberg, commenting on Anita Hill’s unproven accusations, stated that truth was secondary because: “It’s the seriousness of the charge” that matters. This became what might be called the Totenberg Rule, and it operates through four mechanisms: things said cannot be unsaid; things heard cannot be unheard; things seen cannot be unseen; and if something is repeated by enough people, it becomes acceptable to treat it as true. My personal AWFUL added a corollary of her own: that Trump was mentioned hundreds of times in the documents, and therefore it simply must be true.  That is precisely what Democrats are hoping to achieve — convincing the public that guilt or innocence should be judged not by evidence, but by the severity of the accusation. I’m sure that not having a message in the run-up to a midterm election totally has nothing to do with it."
To left wingers, accusations they like, no matter how improbable, are the same as proof. But accusations they don't like don't count (like illegal immigrants who have been accused but not convicted of violent crimes)
