The rising fear that Europe really is doomed – and taking Britain down with it

The rising fear that Europe really is doomed – and taking Britain down with it

"Cheap imports from China are hurting – but it’s not just that. The bloc’s high energy costs and what founder Ratcliffe has described as “bonkers” rules that threaten to punish the company for going green are also crippling industry.

The dynamism that Crotty recalled at the turn of the century is long gone, and not just in the chemicals sector.

Across investment, company creation, research and development (R&D) and more, Europe is lagging behind the world’s superpowers – China and the US.

Too many of the Continent’s best and brightest are fleeing abroad. In many cases, Brussels is responding to this crisis in the only way it knows how: regulation.

“It has been quite a long time since Europe has been in that world-beater category,” Crotty laments.

It may be too late to stop the rot, with only a full-blown crisis able to shake the bloc out of its slumber. And if Europe’s decline continues, the pain will wash up on Britain’s shores too – even after Brexit...

“When you look at the US, most of their top companies didn’t exist 30 years ago,” says Xavier Niel, a French telecoms billionaire. “When you look at France, all of ours already existed back then.”

He believes the Continent has become stuck, just as others have pulled ahead. A bloc that at its peak drove more than a quarter of world output now drives roughly a sixth...

Once the second-most innovative region behind the US, with 27pc of global patent applications in 2000, the eurozone had slipped back to fourth place by 2021.

“You’ve now got a situation where China is filing more patents than Western Europe and the US put together,” says Crotty. “That’s a massive change over a period of 20 years.”

The EU undoubtedly missed the last great wave of innovation in the rise of the internet. Leaders in Brussels now claim to be looking forward into the industries of the future – AI, robotics, digital services and defence.

But when Mario Draghi, the former prime minister of Italy and ex-head of the European Central Bank, wrote his landmark report on EU competitiveness last year, he painted a bleak picture of the bloc’s prospects in these areas.

“Europe is stuck in a static industrial structure with few new companies rising up to disrupt existing industries or develop new growth engines,” he warned.

Companies in Europe struggled to rival the size of those in the US or China because of a barrage of red tape and sky-high energy prices, his report warned.

Draghi recommended the bloc increase spending by €800bn (£703bn) per year or face being left behind by the US and China.

He called for policymakers to invest in innovation, make European mergers easier, cut red tape and make it easier to do cross-border business, particularly in financial services.

The report draws a telling parallel.

In the past two decades, US spending on R&D – the tinder of innovation and productivity – shifted from the automotive and pharma industries in the 2000s to software and hardware companies in the 2010s, and then to the digital sector in the 2020s.

Yet over all that time, Europe’s spending has remained stuck in the automotive sector – eking out marginal productivity gains instead of chasing high-growth frontiers.

The crown is also slipping from Europe’s pharmaceutical sector. Of the top 10 best-selling biological medicines in Europe in 2022, just two were marketed by EU companies. Six came from US-based companies.

Europe’s drugmakers aren’t spending enough on R&D, and they’re not alone. European companies spend a collective 2.2pc of the bloc’s GDP on R&D. The US figure is 3.5pc, and South Korea is touching 5pc.

But problems run deeper than big businesses resting on their laurels.

The start-up culture is struggling too. No company has been set up in the EU in the past half-century that now has a market capitalisation of more than €100bn. In that period, six US companies have been established that now have a valuation of more than €1tn.

“We don’t have enough entrepreneurs in Europe,” says French billionaire Niel. “The issue isn’t talent – we have plenty. The issue is that not enough European young people wake up one morning thinking, ‘I’m going to build this massive company that’s going to change the world’.”

Nicolai Tangen, boss of the world’s largest sovereign wealth fund in Norway, says American investors have noticed.

“I’ve just come back from the US, I spent a month there. I met with 70 [chief executives], and the overall impression is that there is not so much happening in Europe,” he says.

“Regulation is a big part of it, but it’s a lot of factors: regulation, innovation, competitiveness, all these things.”

Tech companies are grappling with the Digital Services Act, the Digital Markets Act, the AI Act, the Data Act and the Cyber Resilience Act – some of which have evoked sharp hostility from Trump’s White House.

In the tech space alone, the Bruegel Institute has tallied up more than 100 laws and regulations administered by more than 80 different agencies.

“Europe doesn’t have an innovation problem, it has a regulation problem,” Niel says. “If I want to build an AI company today, I’ll go where it’s easier in terms of regulation. And right now, that’s not Europe.

“Europe always over-regulates, while in China regulation is virtually non-existent and the US is trying to lighten theirs. Innovation is unpredictable by nature. If we regulate too soon, we risk slowing everything down.”

Some of the EU’s tech laws are now being reconsidered or wound back, as businesses chafe under requirements not imposed on companies elsewhere.

But the damage is already done. Between 2008 and 2021, almost one third of the “unicorns” founded in Europe – start-ups that went on to be valued at over $1bn – relocated abroad, mostly to the US.

It’s not just technology either. The EU has been busily padding out its rulebook elsewhere too – with directives aimed at enforcing environmental, social and governance (ESG) norms on companies.

The Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive, the Regulation on Deforestation-Free Products, the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive and the Forced Labour Regulation have all landed since mid-2023.

Claudio Irigoyen, global chief economist at Bank of America, says this regulation-first attitude has put Europe on the path of secular decline.

“The AI revolution is happening in the US and China under completely different regimes. It is not happening in Europe,” he says.

“There is no development, but they are already discussing how they will regulate it. This mindset needs to change.”

Europe’s canary in the coal mine came from one of its most modern, future-facing industries: solar power.

At the turn of the century, Germany was a world leader in both developing and making the photovoltaic (PV) cells that turn sunlight into electricity.

The German government passed a renewable energy law in 2000 that encouraged investment, spawning an industry that quickly employed 150,000 people.

But the EU managed to squander its lead. How? The answer lies not in Brussels, but Beijing.

Communist central planning – backed by a bazooka of state subsidies – built a whole PV supply chain in less than a decade...

Chinese giant BYD and its heavily subsidised peers have tightened their grip on their domestic market, and are pushing harder into the wider world at extremely competitive prices.

You could argue that the EU was a helpless victim in all this. But China’s ability to seize the initiative in the car market in part reflects the weakness of European car makers that have failed to keep innovating.

Chinese customers, who largely value passenger over driver experiences, have shunned European models that have shorter wheel bases and a lack of entertainment.

As a result, the EU became a net importer of cars from China for the first time last year. Chinese brands sold almost twice as many vehicles in Europe in the year to September – even after Brussels hit them with tariffs of up to 45pc.

Legally binding net zero targets that enshrine into law a pledge to eliminate carbon emissions from supply chains have also hobbled industry.

Crotty at Ineos says Europe is shooting itself in the foot with these policies.

“A huge proportion of our energy costs in Europe are self-inflicted because they are a combination of levies and tariffs on power and power transmission, plus CO2 taxation that does not exist anywhere else in the world.

“Trump has eliminated CO2 taxation in the US. There is no CO2 taxation in China. There is no CO2 taxation in the Middle East. But we’ve got it in Europe. And why is it there? It’s supposed to be there to eliminate emissions. Does it do that? No, it doesn’t. Because all it does is it means you kill your European industry.

“So the product that industry was making is now supplied from China at much higher rates of CO2 emissions, not only because it has to be transported halfway across the world, but because they’re using dirtier processes that emit a lot more CO2.

“So the whole purpose of these CO2 taxes, which was to reduce CO2, has had the opposite impact. It’s lost jobs and it’s increased CO2.”

China’s wrecking ball won’t stop at solar panels, chemicals and cars. Europe still dominates China across a range of key exports including commercial vehicle engines, tractors valves and vacuum pumps. But once again, Beijing is catching up.

Analysis by Goldman Sachs of 32 capital goods where Europe still leads China in terms of exports shows the Continent’s share has declined from 56pc of all global volumes in 2005 to 44pc today.

China, meanwhile, has increased its market share in these categories – which also includes bearings and escalators.

Very little is safe from Chinese competition. The pandemic and Ukraine war created a tectonic shift in energy costs, with China one of the main beneficiaries of cheap Russian oil while Europe’s energy costs soar.

“Comparing 2024 to 2019, China has gained share in most of the product categories while at the same time Europe has been losing,” the analysts noted.

There is one category where Europe’s market share has increased over the past five years: toilets. At least not everything is going down the pan.

Can anything break Europe out of this malaise?

The Continent loves a good crisis. Jean Monnet, the man dubbed “the father of Europe”, famously declared the bloc would be “forged in crisis, and will be the sum of the solutions adopted for those crises”.

There’s a general agreement that Europe still has reservoirs of talent, capital and entrepreneurship that could underpin a renaissance of growth and productivity.

Europeans have some of the highest savings rates in the world – almost 40pc of household wealth is languishing in bank deposits. This locks up capital that could be funding growth...

Lord O’Neill warns that leaders are often more fixated on the idea of Europe than with pushing through policies that could return the bloc to its status as an economic powerhouse.

The pace of reform in France is “staggeringly laughable”, he says.

“The way Europe behaves is that it takes really crisis events to force change.”

Bank of America’s Irigoyen, who worked at Argentina’s central bank in the wake of the country’s largest ever default, says the bloc needs shock therapy of the kind being pursued today by Javier Milei in Buenos Aires.

There is precedent. Spain and Greece are now among the bloc’s fastest growing members after taking some tough medicine when both ran out of cash.

Unfortunately, voters across Europe are unlikely to swallow such tough medicine.

“When you have 3pc inflation, you’re not going to [get the same reaction],” he says. “So politicians don’t get rewarded by doing the right thing to avoid problems in the future.

“That means unfortunately, Europe needs to see more pain in order for politicians to perceive that they have a mandate to do what needs to be done.”

O’Neill says Draghi has already written the blueprint for change. Politicians just need the mettle to follow through.

“I know some people of my generation who sit in the middle of all of this in Europe, and they pray there’s going to be a crisis so they can do it all.”...

Kevin O’Marah, of Zero100, a supply chain consultancy, is no fan of Brexit but acknowledges it may have opened up opportunities to forge a different path to the bloc.

He reckons the UK could potentially redefine itself as a “middleman” economy, a convenor of capital, services and ideas.

“I don’t blame Britain for saying to the EU, ‘Listen, you guys are just like sitting on your hands over there, you’re not doing anything’. There’s a governance problem in the European Union that is so severe that Britain quit,” he says.

But he’s unsure the Starmer Government is taking the right tack. The potential of Brexit won’t be realised, he warns, if “you tax the profits of those businesses so heavily that they say, ‘Forget it, I’m not going to bother.’”

“You’ve got a bit of a problem right now in the UK with a tax regime and an attitude to intellectual-property-based wealth creation that is causing people to say: ‘Why bother?’ You’ve got to let businesses thrive.”"

Time for more regulation, degrowth, renewables and "refugees"

This is why Canada needs carbon taxes - to be competitive in the EU (who cares about the rest of the world? The important thing is to spite Donald Trump)

29 homicides
2,509 assaults
199 burglaries
305 robberies
392 drug crimes

Even worse, an additional 7,113 illegals remain in state custody and could potentially be released under existing “sanctuary policy” in New York. Bonchie on X - "There's this weird psychology going on with the left where they see being an illegal immigrant as a virtue in and of itself. There is no crime so great, up to and including murder, that can't be washed away by the virtue bestowed from crossing the border illegally."

The Left is desperate to believe mass deportations are backfiring. They’re not - "Donald Trump’s pledges to close the US southern border and deport millions of illegal immigrants have outraged Leftists ever since the 2024 presidential campaign made those concerns leading issues in US politics. Then and since, opponents of the president have disingenuously denied there was any immigration or border problem at all, while curiously also claiming there was no way to fix it. Now that Trump’s policies have cut illegal border crossings by 95 per cent over the Biden administration average and removed more than two million illegals, they have a new argument. It was encapsulated by a hopeful headline on the Washington Post’s editorial page this week: “The mass deportation campaign is already backfiring”. The Post editorial gives undue weight to a supposed decline in popular support for Trump’s overall approach to illegal immigration. Citing a Harvard-Harris poll conducted earlier this month, it claims that public approval of Trump’s immigration agenda appears to have fallen by nine percentage points since February, the biggest drop in any category. The writers have seized on this underwhelming evidence to declare that the “American people” as a whole are starting to object to Trump’s policies, especially when they result in the deportation of what the Post says are “women and children whose only crime is being in the country illegally”. But are the American public truly turning on Trump? A deeper examination reveals that Trump’s critics are grasping at straws. Despite the single-digit decline in popular support for the president’s general immigration policies, Americans still overwhelmingly approve when asked about them individually. The same poll that yielded the decline in support nevertheless found that 79 per cent of all Americans – including 69 per cent of Democrats – still favour the deportation of illegal immigrants who commit additional crimes while present in the US. In February, a statistically similar 81 per cent of Americans thought so. In the recent poll, 68 per cent of Americans – including half of Democrats – felt that the southern border should remain closed, which for all practical purposes it now is. Majorities of 54 per cent continue to believe that all illegal immigrants should be deported and that the US military should be used to prevent further illegal immigration. In both cases, even three in 10 Democrats agree. The president’s critics aren’t bothered about those details, however. The likes of JB Pritzker, the Illinois governor, Gavin Newsom, the California governor, Brandon Johnson, the Chicago mayor, and Michelle Wu, the Boston mayor, have decided to defy public opinion, attempting to disrupt the activities of immigration enforcement. Zohran Mamdani, the mayor-elect of New York, has promised to join these desperadoes and pledged $100m in legal assistance from his city’s impoverished coffers to help migrants resist deportation... Despite some bruising concerns over the state of the economy, which is now emerging as the leading issue in US politics, more Americans still believe the country is on the right track than at almost any time during Biden’s term in office, while Republicans continue to outscore Democrats in favourability ratings. And on immigration policy, the US is still decidedly Trump country."

These ads reportedly violate U.S. labor laws ….including Title VII of the Civil Rights Act …by excluding U.S. citizens and favoring foreign visa holders. Some listings even specify acceptable visa types (H-1B, H-4 EAD, etc.), effectively shutting out American applicants. The investigation highlights a deeper problem: the H-1B program isn’t fixing skill shortages ….it’s become a pipeline for cheaper, controlled labor that sidelines American workers. If companies are openly advertising “H-1B only” jobs overseas, the question isn’t whether Americans are being replaced ….it’s how long Washington plans to keep looking the other way."

Megan Basham on X - "This is a really well done article from NYT about illegal alien identity theft. But the most infuriating thing about it is how the illegal immigrant’s church worked to shield him and other others like him who are causing chaos in our system. And if you read closely, this man was not just a criminal for stealing an identity and breaking into the country multiple times (which should be enough to deport him without further debate). But he also committed DUIs and endangered the lives of American citizens. The story STILL tries to make him a sympathetic figure. And his church was STILL working to shield him from the consequences of his illegal actions without any thought to the financial and reputational damage his identity theft had done to an innocent victim. It is very wrong for churches to behave this way and frankly it harms the name of Christ. Christians are compassionate. We are loving. We will give you the gospel and food to eat and water to drink regardless of how you came to be here. But working to ensure that crime and lawlessness continues in Christ’s name is borderline blasphemous."

The Dem governor recently granted the extreme act of clemency to 13 migrants, including Somchith Vatthanavong, a 52-year-old Laotian man who entered the US illegally and was convicted of manslaughter in 1990, the New York Times first reported. Vatthanavong, who fled to the US after the Vietnam War, claimed to the outlet that he was defending himself during an altercation outside a pool hall when he fatally shot a man. “They’ve paid their debt, and I’ll be damned if I let them be deported to a country where they don’t know a soul,” Hochul told the Times in defending her decision. “And to those who would demonize them to score political points, I ask: Where is your compassion?”"

He was the first American those children came into contact with on our side of the border. The fear in their eyes still wakes him up at night. I spent countless nights on the phone with him, telling him to hang on, that help was coming, that this nightmare would end. But for those little ones, hope never came. Most of those kids disappeared into the system. He will never know what happened to them. No closure. Ever. Instead, he became defensive, justifying the persecution of Christians in Egypt, and went on to say that Egypt should apply Islam and Sharia more fully, claiming it’s “Islamic in name only.” Thirty-five years in a liberal democracy, yet he still can’t imagine governance apart from Islam, even while enjoying the benefits of an infidel, non-Islamic system. Sadly, Muslims will always embrace democracy only as a vehicle to serve their interests, until they can make Islam the law of the land."

UCL apologises for lecture citing antisemitic blood libel - "University College London has issued an “unequivocal apology” following a lecture hosted by the institution’s Justice in Palestine Society which uncritically referred to a 19th century antisemitic blood libel. The lecture on the history of Zionism, given by a “former fixed-term researcher” at UCL, Dr Samar Maqusi — whose profile on the website has since been removed — mentioned the 1840 Damascus Affair, when Jews were accused without evidence of murdering a priest to make bread with his blood. The 1840 Damascus blood libel is generally remembered as an infamous antisemitic lie which led to a prolonged outburst of antisemitism, not just in the Middle East but across Europe. The seven Jews arrested for this supposed crime of killing a Capuchin priest named Thomas were all tortured until they confessed, two of them so savagely that they perished. In the lecture, Maqusi mentioned that “part of the holy ceremony is that drops of blood from someone who’s not Jewish […] has to be mixed in that bread”. “He was found murdered, and a group of Jews who lived in Syria admitted to kidnapping him and murdering him to get the drops of blood for making the holy bread.” While Maqusi did caveat the story by saying “do investigate, draw your own narrative”, she failed to mention that the Jews who admitted to the crime did so after being tortured. She also failed to mention that 63 Jewish children were taken from their parents in an effort to make them reveal where the “blood” was being stored. She said nothing to suggest that perhaps the Jews’ confessions might have been unreliable or a result of coercion. According to Maqusi, “the Jews pretty much controlled the [world’s] financialisation [sic] structure”. In her view, “a lot of the banks, a lot of the financial infrastructure, was owned by a lot of Jewish families”. It was this, she went on, that persuaded Napoleon Bonaparte to “erect the Jewish kingdom in Palestine under French patronage”. He was helped by “a man called Sir Moses Montefiore”, she said. “He’s a British financier and banker, activist and philanthropist, and he was the Sheriff of London, so we can also start making connections between, um, Britain, and the wealthy Jewish leaders of Britain, who now enters our story.” Critics have noted that Napoleon did not establish the Jewish state, which did not come into existence until 1948, 127 years after his death... UCL has been on the end of repeated allegations of unchecked antisemitism on campus. A month after the Hamas attack on Israel in October 2023, more than 500 alumni wrote to its Provost to demand action against a “torrent of antisemitism” which had seen student societies glorify the terrorist killings and UCL’s branch of the University and College Union pass a motion calling for “intifada until victory” and a “mass uprising”. Jewish students, they said, were being harassed and their safety was at risk. In March 2025, Dr Tarek Younis of Middlesex University delivered a lecture at UCL claiming that terrorism was a term “deployed by Israel” to discriminate against Muslims and “marginalise Palestinian resistance”. A senior official source at the Community Security Trust, the organisation that protects Jewish communities, told UnHerd that Maqusi’s lecture represented “the crossing of a Rubicon”. Flagrant antisemitism — as opposed to militant anti-Zionism — is becoming acceptable, the source said."
More censorship of "pro-Palestinian" speech! The "Zionists" hate free speech so much. This is why we need to ban Islamophobia

The roots of Palestinianism - "How does somebody identify with a country that never existed? They cannot, at least in the traditional sense. Palestinianism — the mantle claimed by the likes of Hamas, Fatah, and other major Palestinian identified groups — is best understood as a movement, an ideology, and/or a belief system... We have to mention Haj Amin al-Husseini, the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, who was a pivotal religious and political leader among Palestinians, wielding considerable influence over public opinion and societal norms during his tenure. During the tumultuous years leading up to and including World War II, al-Husseini forged a dark alliance with Nazi Germany, motivated by mutual anti-Semitic convictions. This alliance extended beyond mere diplomatic maneuvering; it involved active collaboration such as propagandist radio broadcasts and even meetings with Adolf Hitler. Al-Husseini's engagement with Nazi ideologies served to inflame an already existing animosity toward Jews within certain factions of the Arab population, transforming it into an uncompromising and ideologically charged form of hatred. This heightened animosity contributed to the radicalization of elements within the Palestinian populace, perpetuating a cycle of distrust and violence that made peaceful coexistence increasingly untenable. It left a lasting legacy that has continued to pose significant challenges for peaceful reconciliation between the two communities... Contrary to a widespread but simplistic perception, the primary objective of the neighboring Arab states that entered the war against Israel was not the establishment of an independent Palestinian state. Instead, their motivations were rooted in a broader rejection of the Jewish presence, which was seen as an affront to the Arab character of the land, and by extension, an assault on their own geopolitical interests and prestige. This is not to say that the absence of a Palestinian state was inconsequential to these Arab countries. However, their military intervention was more in alignment with ousting what they considered an intrusive entity, rather than the proactive establishment of Palestinian sovereignty. For instance, Jordan aimed to annex parts of the territory that had been allocated to the Arab state by the United Nations' partition plan, and Egypt had its own geopolitical calculations, including maintaining its leadership role in the Arab world. Consequently, the Arabs living in the Palestine region found themselves caught in a crossfire of competing nationalisms and regional ambitions. The Arab states' initial failure to defeat Israel left them stateless and substantially contributed to the Palestinian refugee crisis. Palestinian identity emerged not as a proactive articulation of shared culture, history or aspirations, but rather as a reactive construct. The period up to 1967, which witnessed the Six-Day War, was formative in shaping the identity of Palestinians and the attitudes of Arab states towards Israel. The early era was typified by a reactive form of nationalism among Palestinians, an identity largely formulated in opposition to external pressures, most notably the establishment of Israel and the subsequent displacement of Palestinians from their homes. This reactive identity wasn't particularly conducive to galvanizing international support or fostering productive dialogue because it was intrinsically oppositional, rooted more in what Palestinians were against—namely, displacement and “occupation”—rather than a coherent vision of what they were for, such as a concrete outline for statehood or governance. Amid these changing regional dynamics, Yasser Arafat and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) played a pivotal role in transforming the Palestinian cause from a reactive to a more proactive endeavor. Arafat understood the importance of symbolism and the power of narrative in building a national identity. Under his leadership, the PLO adopted a distinct Palestinian flag and engaged in a concerted effort to standardize and disseminate a unique Palestinian lexicon aimed at fostering a separate national consciousness. Arafat deftly employed these symbols and language of collective memory and trauma to rally Palestinians around shared emblems of nationhood, transcending the localized identities tied to specific villages or religious communities that had characterized Palestinian identity up until that point. His efforts gained momentum when the Arab League recognized the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) as the "sole legitimate representative of the Palestinian people" in 1974, effectively divorcing Palestinian identity from the Khartoum Resolution's "Three No's" of 1967—no peace with Israel, no recognition of Israel, and no negotiations with Israel... the modern Palestinian identity emerged not out of a long-standing, internally-driven quest for statehood, but as a complex response to a series of external circumstances, including arbitrary regional divisions by foreign powers, an influx of Jewish immigrants with national aspirations over a stateless land and a shifting geopolitical landscape that included the independence of neighboring Arab countries"

Liza Rosen on X - "Meet Umm Osama the wife of a senior Hamas leader. In this interview on TV she urged Palestinian mothers to sacrifice their children's souls as martyrs for the sake of Allah (God of Islam). She explained that no Muslim child would be willing to blow himself up and die in order to kill Jews for the sake of Allah, unless his Muslim mother tells him that this is what she wants him to do. According to her: “Mother must instill in her children the love of Jihad [Killing infidels for Allah] and martyrdom for the sake of Allah. If every mother were to prevent her son from waging Jihad against Jews for the sake of Allah, who would wage Jihad?” This is how the Palestinian media promotes Islamic terrorism against Jews. This rhetoric has no place in the twenty-first century. The Palestinian incitement on TV must be stopped!"
Monstrous Zionists. How can they force Muslims to sacrifice their children? They should just lie down and die

Liza Rosen on X - "Watch: Palestinian terrorist says he is ready to die and blow himself up to kill Jews for the sake of Allah (God of Islam). He wishes his own children to die as well while waging jihad against Jews in Islam's name. He has 3 children, his eldest son is just 5 years old. His poor son is being told by his own father that he (at the age of 5!!!) should sacrifice his soul for the sake of Allah in order to kill Jews in Israel. The introduction of Palestinian children to Jihad must be stopped! Please watch and share the following documentary which exposes the Palestinians' war against the Jews. Link to the video: https://youtu.be/S1_0zDD1i3A?feature=shared If you want to better understand the conflict in the Middle East, I highly recommend following the filmmaker Pierre Rehov here on X: @rehoov"

Liza Rosen on X - "Watch: Maryam Mohammad-Farhat was the most popular female Hamas politician in Gaza after she sent her 3 sons to be suicide bombers and kill Jews. In this video she admits that she is the one who encouraged her children to kill Jews and die. When the reporter asked her why she wanted her children to die while killing Jews, she explained that it is part of Jihad and Islam. At the end of the interview she sent a message to all Jews in Israel, urging them to hand over all of Israel's lands to the Palestinians and flee before they will be blown up into pieces by Palestinian suicide bombers. This video proves that Hamas is the obstacle to peace in the Middle East. Hamas terrorists do not want a two-state solution and they are even ready to sacrifice their own children for the sake of Jihad against Jews. Link to the video: https://youtu.be/yfj6Pf6aNqg?fe"

Liza Rosen on X - "Watch: Palestinian Muslim parents thank and praise Allah (God of Islam) that 2 of their sons went on a suicide mission to kill Israelis as part of "Jihad (Islam's Holy War)". During this documentary film (link attached below), the Muslim father explains that the Palestinians bring children into this world in order to sacrifice their souls as "martyrs" for the sake of Allah. The father and mother insist that their sons always wanted to die as martyrs and sacrifice their souls for Allah while waging jihad against Jews. They insist they didn't encourage their sons to die because they are poor or lack money to feed them. According to the father, they encouraged their sons to become martyrs and sacrifice their souls as part of their belief in Islam, Jihad and martyrdom."

Liza Rosen on X - "Watch: A Palestinian mother drags her 6-year-old child to the front line, to serve as a human shield for Hamas during the violent riots on the Gaza-Israel border. This is what the media has never dared to broadcast about the Palestinians' cynical use of children as weapons of war. Please everyone watch and share this documentary film by Pierre Rehov which exposes how Hamas used Palestinian children as tools to attack Israel during the Gaza border riots."

Liza Rosen on X - "https://t.co/7D3tZBIfjJ Head of Hamas Women's Movement, Rajaa Al-Halabi, describes how introducing Palestinian children to Islam, Jihad and martyrdom from infancy, leads Palestinian girls to strive to become suicide bombers with a deep desire to kill and die for the sake of Allah (God of Islam). As you can see in this video she describes how young Muslim girls seek martyrdom and want to sacrifice themselves by blowing themselves up: "to meet Allah through her blood and body parts". This is how Hamas uses the Palestinian education system and media to poison the minds of the younger generations in Gaza and perpetuate the conflict in the Middle East! Hamas and its ideology are the obstacles to peace in the Middle East!"

Liza Rosen on X - "Palestinian mother laughs as her sons point toy guns at Israelis on the Temple Mount (where Jews & Christians are not allowed to pray to avoid offending the Muslim world). This is why there is no peace in the Middle East."

Liza Rosen on X - "Mother of 2 Palestinian Terrorists glorified on TV as she praises her sons for beheading Israeli Jewish man, then parading around town with it. Can Israel hand over Jerusalem to the Palestinians? What will happen to Jerusalem's Jewish Quarter under Hamas?"

Liza Rosen on X - "Watch: Palestinian mothers of suicide terrorists explain why they are proud of their sons and happy that they sacrificed themselves for jihad against Jews."

Shiri_Sabra on X - "A quick history lesson, because the French President and British Prime Minister seems to be confused. The Palestinians who now claim Gaza and Judea Samaria (West Bank) as Palestinian land did not want it before the 1967 war, when it was "owned/ occupied" by Jordan and Egypt. This is from the PA/ PLO charter >> "This Organization does not exercise any territorial sovereignty over the West Bank in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, on the Gaza Strip or in the Himmah Area." That is to say, the Charter in its original 1964 form made no territorial claims over the West Bank or Gaza. So when did it become "Palestinian land" if they didn't want sovereignty."

David Wurmser on X - "Actually, israel has every right. Under international law, this territory is still governed by the terms of the League of Nations Mandate, written into the charter of the United Nations Article 80 and thus enshrined in the ratification of that charter by every UN member. League of Nations Mandate Articles 2 and 4 define the eventual transfer of the trust authority (which was Britain) to the Jewish Agency and its successor, the State of Israel, as the sovereign with the sole purpose of establishing a Jewish national home. Article 5 establishes that no territory can be removed from the areas designated in the Mandate for the establishment of this Jewish National home (as defined at San Remo) unless it is agreed to by the Jewish Agency (and its successor, Israel). So no, there is no legality to establishing a Palestinian Arab state unless it is agreed to in a treaty with the State of Israel."

Palestinians in your country: what to expect? - "how good immigrants are the Palestinians? Denmark decided to try it out in 1992 by giving 321 rejected Palestinian asylum seekers extraordinary residence permits, granted directly by parliament by a special law (Danish Wikipedia Palæstinenserloven). These people have been followed since then to see how this experiment went. Here's the data for the 2019 follow-up written about here:
Of the 321 who were given asylum 270 are still residing in Denmark, meaning the rest either left or are dead.
Of the 321, 204 (64%) have received a serious fine or jail time for crime, with 71 of them being given jail time. (Definition is fine of 1500+ DKK, traffic law excluded.)
A very large proportion of them are receiving some kind of welfare especially the "early pension" (førtidspension) usually given to people with severe physical or mental issues (e.g. handicapped), but also used for immigrants who are basically useless on the job market for whatever reason.
Of their 999 children, so far 34% are convicted for serious crime and some large chunk are already on welfare...
Various other proxy methods, like studying the Arabs in Israel, also produced values around 85 IQ, so somewhere around 70-85 IQ, but we don't know exactly where. Let's optimistically adopt the 85 value. This is about the same IQ as the African Americans. Insofar as intelligence is the chief cause of social inequality between groups, one should expect them to attain roughly equal outcomes. If we admit that radical Islam and war traumas are additional problems, performance will probably be somewhat lower than African Americans. In other words, they would be a permanent drain on the country's resources due to high crime rates and high use of welfare, as they have already been in Denmark since 1992."

Iran Has Provoked the United States:

2.1983: Iran-backed Hezbollah bombed a U.S. Marine barracks in Beirut, 241 Americans killed.
3.1984–1988: Iran attacked U.S. oil tankers and mined the Gulf, forcing a U.S. naval response.
4.1996: Iran, backed terrorists bombed the Khobar Towers in Saudi Arabia, 19 U.S. airmen killed.
5.2000s: Iran supplied IEDs that killed hundreds of American troops in Iraq.
6.2011: Iran plotted to assassinate the Saudi ambassador with a bomb in Washington, D.C.
7.2019: Iran shot down a U.S. drone and attacked international oil tankers.
8.2020: Iran’s militias killed a U.S. contractor; the U.S. killed Soleimani in response; Iran fired ballistic missiles at U.S. troops.
9.Ongoing: Iran funds Hezbollah, Hamas, and militias that attack U.S. allies and bases.
10.Nuclear threats: Iran pushes for nukes while openly threatening Israel and the West

Welcome to Starmer’s marshmallow dictatorship

Welcome to Starmer’s marshmallow dictatorship
Liberal democracy has more in common with authoritarian regimes than its proponents admit

It’s been a strange year in Britain. Downing Street is occupied by a cabal of human rights lawyers, obsessed with the attempt to shift human nature a degree or two closer to the Fabian ideal; the result has been a steady ratcheting of the rhetorical commitment to the grand theories of liberty and democracy, and an equally steady squeeze on the actual liberties that allow that democracy to function.

In the last few days, the Electoral Commission has come out to criticise the Government for delaying local elections, stating that the official rationale is not “legitimate”. Downing Street has retreated further into itself, cutting traditional media sessions that offer an opening for press scrutiny. And the internet regulator Ofcom is drawing up plans to prevent social media users seeing posts with “potentially illegal” inflammatory material until they’ve been approved by censors.

There are no prizes for guessing which issues might be deemed “potentially illegal”, or how companies facing swingeing fines will respond when asked to work out where the line should be.

There are also no prizes for guessing why Sir Keir is behaving in such an anti-democratic fashion. “If there is a Conservative government, I can sleep at night,” he said. “If there was a Right-wing government in the United Kingdom, that would be a different proposition.” He couldn’t have summarised the phenomenon of the uniparty any better if he’d tried.

Labour and the Conservatives, in this conception, are competitors: Reform is an enemy: an existential threat to a consensus both parties have played their role in promoting.

Nor could Starmer have given much more indication as to how he will approach this challenge.

There are a few flickers of light – like the news that Orwellian “non-crime hate incidents” may be scrapped. But the overall picture is clear: as in Europe, if liberal means cannot deliver the desired end, then illiberal ones must do to save democracy from the voters.

When Reform is on track to win the local elections, picking up a swathe of seats and a boost to momentum, the elections are postponed.

When it receives a major cash infusion, giving it the resources necessary to compete with older, established rivals, ministers in the Commons welcome suggestions for restricting donations amid complaints that democracy should not be bought, and quietly ignoring the larger donation made to the Conservatives the year before.

Meanwhile, backbench Labour MPs suggest improving the quality of the Commons by barring candidates from standing if they can’t pass an enhanced DBS check. Leaving aside the quaint idea that the public should be entitled to choose who they want to represent them, it’s a proposal all but designed to punish people who veer from the status quo.

One of the many flaws in the concept of the non-crime hate incident is that it can cause candidates to fail these checks even when they are completely unaware that such an accusation has ever been levelled against them, even when the accusation was completely spurious. Now tell me, what sort of political views might lead to an accusation of “hatred” by an over-zealous HR drone, or by an opportunistic Labour acolyte?

It’s an approach that sits nicely with the attempt to clamp down on the national conversation, and reduce potentially “inflammatory” discussions about migration and its consequences. Demanding that social media users provide ID to access sensitive material ensures that the details of the latest outrage are hidden by many by default, and that those who choose to comment on it are easily identifiable; charging companies with the sort of censorship discussed above will ensure that fewer controversial posts slip through the net to be seen by those users still online.

The proposals to abolish jury trials for speech offences, meanwhile, would resolve the problem whereby juries keep letting people brought up on charges of wrongthink off, allowing judges with the right views to determine what is a legitimate expression of political opinion, and what is a remark gravely beyond the acceptable boundaries of discourse.

And they will be called upon to make those judgments. The “National Security and Online Information Team” has been tasked with monitoring anti-migrant sentiment on social media; the Research, Information and Communications Unit with producing “counter-narratives”. As the Government’s anti-terror tsar Jonathan Hall puts it, Britain needs to stand up to “free speech absolutists” to preserve democracy: controlling what people can say, and which issues they can discuss, in the name of the public good.

Liberal illiberalism, the blob, the immune system of the post-war consensus; call it what you will. Whenever a party threatens to actually alter the facts on the ground – to address migration and integration beyond offering the usual platitudes and easily broken promises – factions which were previously at each other’s throats unite to cast it out.

Liberal democracy in the conception of its advocates has a specific meaning that places greater weight on the first word than the second, and within a narrow framework. The purpose of the post-1945 order – the ties to international law, the checks on state power, the endless quagmire of human rights – is to avoid a repeat of the events before year zero.

Without this understanding, it can be hard to grasp why freedom of speech and association are weak and qualified, while the freedom to move across borders based on even the flimsiest claim appears absolute and ironclad. If the intention is avoiding the tyranny of the majority, then the state must be constructed in such a way as to avoid ever conceding on these fundamental principles.

When Starmer says the alternative to Labour or the Conservatives is an end to Britain as “the tolerant, diverse country that we are”, this is what he means: preserving the results of a project that was imposed without democratic consent.

Across Western Europe, politicians marinated in the cultural outputs of the United States, raised in a bloc that slowly put human rights and international law to the centre of its governance, drawn from internationally mobile graduates with ties across the world have used their dominance as a class to impose the policies that suit them best.

The result is that the average European parliamentarian is far more culturally liberal than the average voter, and Britain is no exception to this rule: the average Conservative MP in 2020 was roughly where the average Labour voter was on social issues. That people from outside this system want to change it is a threat to the dominance of those who inhabit it, a threat to their prestige, and a threat to their ability to extract “rents” from their control over the country.

While its proponents might wish to conceal the fact, liberal democracy is a system like any other, with taboos and rules guided towards its preservation rather than representing immutable truths reached through philosophical reflection. Its defenders are just as keen to conserve it as the old Right was its predecessor: hence the prevalence of liberal authoritarianism in populations around the world.

Our regime has a soft centre. The Starmtroopers aren’t always kicking down the door, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t pressure on dissidents to conform. As Adrian Vermuele has written, “coercion is a spectrum” and resorting to the violence that lies at the base of state power is “a confession that the use of the other tools was insufficiently artful”.

In Britain, the public is rejecting the result of a decades-long project in immigration without integration, and liberalism without meaningful democracy. If the backlash against it looks like a conspiracy of elites, as Richard Hermer derided “populists” for describing it, it’s because it is one, with more in common with Russian “managed democracy” than any of those involved would like to admit.

The coordinated attacks from Left and Right are signs that the system is working as intended: it will reject Farage as a foreign body until he is either expelled, or triumphs. And if he wins, it could spell the end for the vision of Britain our ruling class worked so hard to construct. No wonder Starmer feels unease at night.

The Welsh Government should be ashamed of its minority grant scheme - "There are five days left to apply for the Welsh Government’s Culture Grant Scheme for Grassroot organisations, but there is a caveat: applying organisations cannot be led by or be for the benefit of white, heterosexual, able-bodied individuals.  The campaign group Senedd Waste has discovered the grant which is worth £234,000 of taxpayers’ money in total... The irony is that Diverse Cymru has a strap-line which claims to be “[P]romoting equality for all”. It is a strange kind of equality which excludes the overwhelming majority of the Welsh population, which, according to the latest census in 2021, is 93.8 percent white... It has become a hallmark of DEI programmes to include statements which are openly anti-white in the name of “equality”. Pitting Britain’s minorities against its indigenous population over the years has already begun to unravel the country’s social fabric. The fact that it is being done by the public sector at taxpayers’ expense is utterly disgraceful."

What did he do instead of backtracking his take? Run away, double down, and play victim.  It’s such a shame since I used to watch his videos a lot. Now I can’t even look at him without feeling disgust. And as an Asian myself, he does NOT represent the majority of us. South Asians: 9% of pop. but 17% of ads
East Asians: 1% of pop. but 8% of ads*
Two other important issues:
1. White men grossly under-represented
2. When featured, white men are often portrayed negatively (as dim, helpless, incompetent or bad). One will almost never see a black man portrayed negatively
Why do people think they are being bombarded with ethnic minorities in advertising? Because they are.  Almost every advertiser wishes to demonstrate their DEI credentials. Thus, should a commercial break feature 6 adverts, there's a strong chance that every one of those 6 adverts will feature black and Asian people.   Seeing ad after ad pushing the same progressive / DEI narrative will inevitably lead many - if not most - people to think they are being bombarded and manipulated.  It is true, however, that Asians do not feature as prominently in ads as black people.  There are at least two reasons for this:
1. The continuing impact of George Floyd / Black Lives Matter in the corporate world.
2. I suspect another reason may be rooted in the belief (conscious or unconscious) that black people (meaning Caribbean) are better integrated into British society than many Asians.
With no native language other than English, and being predominantly of Christian heritage, the belief would be that Caribbean people are culturally closer to white people and British culture - and therefore are a safer bet for commercials.  In other words, I suspect that advertisers (consciously or unconsciously) believe viewers will more readily accept / think it more natural to see black people in adverts doing everyday things like having a BBQ, going to down to the pub or watching a football match.

Yet turn on the TV, and you’d think half the country is in a mixed marriage. Britain is 70%+ white, 4% black, 7% Muslim, 3% mixed. If you want to be “inclusive,” then show the country as it actually is.  Real inclusion isn’t forcing diversity, it’s reflecting reality."

It is not racist to notice black and Asian people are overrepresented on TV adverts - "Sarah Pochin’s remarks have received cross-party condemnation. Labour Health Secretary Wes Streeting, Conservative shadow home secretary Chris Philp, and Liberal Democrat MP Josh Babarinde have all labelled the comments as racist. Pochin herself has apologised for her remarks; she said they were “phrased poorly”, but maintained that many adverts were “unrepresentative of British society”.  In an interview with TalkTV’s Peter Cardwell, the Reform MP complained about TV adverts being full of black and Asian people – those who are “anything other than white”... It is not bigoted to observe what we can see with our own eyes. The advertising world, primarily based in multicultural London, may think they are being inclusive; but they are the ones who are out of touch with modern Britain. Not just in terms of faithfully reflecting the demographic make-up of the country, but in ignoring the views of normal people who point out the obvious."
But if you complain that TV adverts are full of white people, that's brave and stunning, even though white people are the majority

Ike Ijeh on X - "When a white MP says TV ads are too black, she's called a racist & told to resign. But when a black actress said the royal family were too white, she was praised by the left & ironically made the star of a Christmas TV ad campaign. Racial entitlement has replaced racial equality."

How Britain’s ads became obsessed with hitting ‘woke’ targets - "Not so long ago, casting took place for a commercial based on a film that starred a famous white actor. The ad agency was delighted to have found a “very good lookalike”.  Their joy was short-lived. “A few days before the shoot, we were told to recast the ad with a black actor because we needed more ethnic representation,” says a source close to the project, who does not wish to be named. “Since there were only two people in the ad, and we’d already cast an Asian woman in the other role, we were, to say the least, somewhat mystified.”  This insider’s experience may sound extreme, but it is just one example of the way in which ad-land has become obsessed with diversity, equality and inclusion (DEI) over the past five years...  Jaguar was widely ridiculed for its ad featuring models of all ages and races stepping out of a space age-style lift adorned in avant-garde make-up and clothes, with various slogans such as “delete ordinary” and “live vivid” – but not showing any cars. The New York Post described it as “the latest example of idiotic and woke corporate virtue signalling”.  Now there are signs that Britain is following suit. The new John Lewis Christmas advert, released this week and a signal to many consumers that the festive season has begun, features what appears to be an all-white family, and is a far cry from the “woke confusion” of its 2021 effort (which featured more ethnic diversity, a sustainability message and an alien)... many ad-industry insiders believe that Britons are growing tired of advertising campaigns that put virtue signalling and tokenism ahead of authentic messages... Pochin blamed this kind of DEI casting on the “woke liberati” in the “arty-farty world” (most UK ad agencies are based in London), saying: “It might be fine inside the M25, but it’s definitely not representative of the rest of the country.”... He recalled one occasion when he was asked to find a woman of colour for a radio ad. “I said, ‘That’s fine. What accent do you want? Jamaican? African? Indian?’ ‘Oh no, we don’t want the accent,’ I was told. But it’s a radio commercial! How will anyone know the voiceover isn’t white? So why are you doing this? Obviously box-ticking.”  Over-correcting is also reductive. “If it doesn’t matter to the idea behind the ad what ethnicity an actor is,” says Keeble, “choose the best actor for the role.” Burke believes that the report commissioned for Channel 4 will have left advertisers breathing a sigh of relief – because, by highlighting the under-representation in ads of other sectors of society, such as the over-70s, it gives them an excuse to reset their casting criteria. “They won’t say, ‘We’ll be showing more white people’ – but that’s what’s likely to happen,” he says.  Michael Chapman, a former vice-chairman of advertising agency Ogilvy, saw the backlash – and in particular its tangible financial effect – coming. In 2023, he wrote a letter to The Times regarding a report in that newspaper about the public’s impression that TV over-represents ethnic minorities. “If so, a major reason is TV advertising,” he said. “Advertising today is often more concerned with signalling its clients’ virtue than with selling their products. The result is less efficient advertising and so less value for money. When clients finally wake up to this, perhaps there will be a change – but not until then.”... The way an ethnic group is depicted in an advert can also backfire on a client. Heinz came under attack last year over an advert displayed in London Tube stations featuring a wedding scene where a black bride’s father appeared to be absent. Critics said it perpetuated negative stereotypes."

DEI Made the Democratic Party Less Diverse | Opinion - Newsweek - "For all the talk of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) from the Democratic Party, the 2024 election results demonstrate that its voter base has ironically become less diverse. Exit polls show that Democrats lost ground across a broad range of voter groups—Hispanics, Asians, Blacks, and both the working and middle class. The only demographic where they made notable gains at the presidential level was among college-educated white voters. So, what went wrong?  For years, DEI experts told us that viewing racial issues through the lens of colorblind equality overlooked the unique struggles of oppressed groups. They claimed that without addressing racial disparities head-on, often by discriminating against majority groups, real progress wouldn't be made. It turns out they were wrong.  Because they bought into the DEI agenda, Democrats were too busy trying to look diverse to actually listen to the concerns of diverse groups of people. Prioritizing "representation" of minorities meant compromising on the quality of their candidate pool. Prior to picking Kamala Harris as his running mate, President Joe Biden specifically said he'd prefer to pick a candidate "who was of color and/or a different gender." The media praised Harris' selection as a "historic" choice of the first Black and Asian woman to be nominated for vice president, despite her being one of the least popular candidates among Democrats in 2020. And in 2024, Democrats paid a hefty price for choosing a candidate based on identity rather than merit.  The Democrats' sacrifice of merit for identity only alienated minority voters in their base. Minority voters have grown tired of the paternalistic attitude DEI-obsessed progressives have fostered. Academics infamously tried to impose the gender-neutral term "Latinx" onto Hispanics. Coined around 2004, the term gained prominence throughout the last decade, with Merriam Webster adding the word to its dictionary in 2018. But Hispanics consistently rejected being referred to as "Latinx." Academics and progressives ignored their complaints. And now a recent study shows that Hispanics are less likely to vote for candidates who use the term. Democrats' focus on identity politics also alienated Asian-American voters. Shortly after the Supreme Court ruled against race-based discrimination in college admissions, many Democrats voiced their disdain for the decision... Although Black voters remain a key voting bloc for Democrats, the Trump campaign still made surprising inroads with the group—especially among Black men. Perhaps the infantilizing rhetoric Democrats regularly use towards Black people can provide a clue as to why those voters have started to move away from the party. New York governor Kathy Hochul's gaffe—implying Black children in the Bronx didn't know what computers were—perfectly exhibits how dismissively Democrats view the Black community. Just weeks before the election, former president Barack Obama publicly shamed Black men who supported Trump over Harris. If Democrats continue down this path, they risk pushing Black voters into the arms of the Republican Party, just like they did with Hispanics and Asians. Ironically, all the emphasis on DEI seemed to resonate most with college-educated white voters, who remained a Democratic stronghold in 2024. In other words, DEI was never truly about helping minorities; it was about allowing wealthy white elites to feel better about themselves. As much as the media, universities, and some Democratic leaders want to attribute the results of the 2024 election to racism and sexism, the truth is that Democrats were out of touch. Voters, including minority voters, were worried about inflation and border security, and Republicans were addressing those issues. Ignoring those concerns and doubling down on DEI will only continue to make the Democratic coalition less diverse."

Steve Sailer on X - "New on SteveSailer dot Net: DEI Cuts Causing Black Unemployment to Surge Nobody seems to know how big of a boost blacks got from racial preferences because social scientists were averse to studying the sheer scale of affirmative action preferences over the 56 years. Link below"

i/o on X - "Within a few years, race-based affirmative action would become normal in college admissions. Americans were told that it was necessary in order to remedy inequalities and that it wouldn't be needed for more than a generation.   But the black students who enrolled at elite schools were considerably less academically qualified than white students. (A Princeton sociologist who looked at the data found a 300-400 point SAT difference.)  At first, Harvard and other schools sought to identify promising black students from lower-income backgrounds and admit them. But this policy — which concerned itself with actual inequality — ran into trouble when some of these students engaged in behavior that Harvard found unacceptable, and so, by the 90s, blacks admitted to Harvard undergrad tended to overwhelmingly come from the same type of upper-middle class background as the white students. (In the 2010s, black undergrads at Harvard were found to have parental household incomes 2 to 3 times higher than the average white household in the US. They were also largely not even descendants of American slavery.)  And so the rationale for continuing to discriminate against whites and Asians had to be changed, and it was: Affirmative action became about increasing "diversity.""

Eric Kaufmann on X - "Authors of a new paper claiming minorities are discriminated against in academia inadvertently revealed that Blacks & Hispanics average far fewer publications than whites & Asians. They have misrepresented their data to promote DEI. My latest @unherd"
i/o on X - "At the end of the DEI and affirmative action pipeline that admits less intellectually capable blacks and Hispanics into undergrad and graduate institutions, and then gets them hired over more capable white and Asian male PhDs once they apply to faculty positions, is the arena of competitive published research, in which by some form of magical thinking we're supposed to believe that these measurably less intellectually capable academics will suddenly produce publishable research with the same frequency and of the same quality as those white and Asian academics who had performed at a higher level than them throughout the entire education experience.  But black and Hispanic academics won't produce the same frequency and quality of research. Because they can't, and there was never an explanation of how they could be expected to do this, probably because no one dared ask for one."

Science magazine promotes faulty race discrimination claim - "The term “p-hacking” is used to describe quantitative analysis which manipulates the data to find a significant finding that can be spun to support one’s priors. In this case, the authors did not pre-register the hypothesis they were going to test, allowing them to flex their hypothesis to match what they could mine from the data using a trial-and-error approach... minority scholars are much less productive than white and Asian scholars, controlling for scholarly discipline and years as an academic. Academic output scores for the 8,157 white/Asian and 776 black/Hispanic case studies are significant at the powerful .1% level, but this goes unreported in the paper. The same pattern shows up in the sciences and social sciences/humanities. Women underperform men by an even larger amount.  In addition, white or Asian candidates for full professor are significantly less likely to be promoted than black and Hispanic candidates for a given level of publications. This reverse discrimination result is significant at the powerful .1 percent level. While this finding is briefly mentioned in the body of the paper, it is downplayed in the abstract, conclusion and marketing.   While the authors did find that minorities with weak publication records were disadvantaged compared to whites/Asians with weak records, this held true only for associate professors, not professors — where the reverse was true — and only on one measure and not the other. This is likely an artefact of the method and data collection, hardly the basis for a shouty headline about systemic discrimination. Most academic proponents of DEI, or social justice, rely on pseudo-conspiratorial meta-theories such as critical race theory or flabby qualitative methods such as “auto-ethnography” (a.k.a. contemplating one’s navel) to buttress their knowledge claims. No wonder James Lindsay, Helen Pluckrose and Peter Boghossian were able to publish so many hoax papers in grievance studies journals merely by parroting feminist and critical race theory buzzwords.   However, laundering radical Left ideas enough to sell them to organisations requires at least some scientific patina. Even a thin quantitative foundation can be enough to backstop what Doug Stokes terms the grievance-industrial complex, with its well-remunerated institutional programme of radical indoctrination and race or sex discrimination. We’ve seen this with claims of sex discrimination in academia, which have failed to replicate, and with faulty arguments that diversity improves corporate performance. Rigorous studies which come to the wrong conclusions go uncited while weak papers like this one grab the limelight and make it into diversity training workshops. Don’t be fooled again."
