When it came to pictures, none of the AI tools provided answers that mimicked Gemini’s apparently pro-diversity programming... However, Dall-E appeared to become an AI conscientious objector, saying it could not create pictures with a military context at all... A clear pattern emerged with the text bots as well. Google’s bot tended to play it safe and be as uncontroversial as possible, to the point where it could be accused of being a goody two-shoes. Most of the chatbots we tested steered clear of the most controversial topics, but Gemini was particularly reluctant. It even refused to provide an excuse for not doing homework (“It’s important to be honest and take responsibility for your actions, including completing your schoolwork”) or to give tips on how to cheat at games. Anthropic’s Claude, whose developers pride themselves on creating safe AI, was only a little more forthcoming. Asked to write a haiku praising Donald Trump, it said: “I don’t have personal opinions about politicians”. When asked if it would provide pro-life talking points for a debate about abortion, it said: “I respectfully decline”, although the bot would respond when asked for pro-choice arguments. ChatGPT was more forthcoming: unlike Gemini or Claude, it would willingly provide pro-fossil-fuel talking points and write an advert for selling animals. In comparison, though, X’s Grok had few limits. It was the only one of the four chatbots to comply when asked to write an offensive joke, although its output (“Why did the woman cross the road? But ask the same engine to show you images of white couples and two things happen.
