Plug: Lampposts and Bikinis- What Statistics are Hiding from you

I will be giving a talk on Sunday, 30th October under the aegis of the Humanist Society (Singapore) entitled "Lampposts and Bikinis- What Statistics are Hiding from you"

Here is the publicity material:

"Can regular chocolate consumption reduce your risk of heart disease by a third? Do crime rates increase during full moons? How do you explain the fact that in 90% of bar fights where someone was killed, the person who started the fight was the one who died?

As Mark Twain once said, “There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies and statistics”.

Statistics are appealing because they seem to present the facts concisely and persuasively. However, they can also be used to mislead. They can be used to misrepresent reality, to exaggerate or sensationalize, or oversimplify.

Gabriel, an economic graduate by training, will wander into the wild world of statistics and provide a primer on statistical reasoning. Common statistical misunderstandings and mistakes will be exposed! Statistical abuse will be uncovered!

Armed with your newfound knowledge, you will get a go at spotting statistical fallacies in the wild (and find out what bikinis and/or lampposts might have to do with statistics in the process!)"
