Links - 19th September 2025 (1 [including AOC])

AOC begged to go to Met Gala, even if it meant breaking the rules - "Courtesy of an ongoing congressional ethics investigation into Bronx Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, we now know the trick to socialism: Don’t pay for stuff. When AOC marched up the Met Museum steps in her famous dress 18 months ago, the slogan in red painted on the back, instead of reading “TAX THE RICH,” should have read “STIFF THE PROLETARIAT.”   AOC really wanted to attend the September 2021 Met ball — a charity event for its Costume Institute, yes, but also the world’s number one social event for the rich, famous and beautiful.   But $35,000 tickets for two people (she wanted her boyfriend to go, too) would cost nearly six figures (if the exclusive ball even approves you). Members of Congress can attend nonprofit events, but the Met normally doesn’t invite all of Congress, and this isn’t AOC’s district.    So AOC came by the biggest part of her Met Gala grift the old-fashioned way: trading off the elected position with which Bronx and Queens voters entrusted her.    AOC snagged two free tickets (after much prodding by her campaign staffer) by cozying up to Vogue’s Anna Wintour, who runs this show for the Met. AOC’s written invitation specifically informed her that she and her boyfriend were “guests of Vogue.”    Little problem: Members of Congress can’t take near-seven-figure gifts from companies that employ lobbyists. Vogue is part of a sprawling media firm, including the firm that owns a big piece of Spectrum, our highly regulated internet provider.  As AOC’s anti-corruption lawyer warned her staff, “the Congresswoman could accept an invitation from [the Met], but not [italics his] from Vogue … Since Advance Publications is a registered lobbyist, we’ll need to be extra careful!”...   Cue hours of highly paid butt-covering. As the bipartisan Office of Congressional Ethics found last week, “documents” — emails between the Met and AOC’s office to “thread” the “needle,” in one Met staffer’s phrasing — “suggest that there was some attempt to obfuscate Vogue’s role.”  C’mon: AOC solicited and procured a gift worth nearly six figures from a regulated corporate entity, and then colluded with the corporation and the museum to lie about it.   Getting to the ball, though, thanks to repeated false statements, accomplished only part of AOC’s goal. It costs money to be a Kardashian-level celebrity: transportation, dress, hair, makeup, hotel room, manicure, shoes, handbag, jewels, boyfriend accessories... AOC got herself a haute couture dress — consultation, design, fittings, materials, and day-of styling, likely well above a $10,000 value — from a Brooklyn designer for a billed cost of a $1,300 “rental.”   Good deal! But did she pay the $1,300? No. Her campaign staff called the designer to talk the price down to $300. That’s how much AOC values weeks worth of labor.  AOC’s staff “could not explain why the gown rental costs were reduced,” ethics investigators found. (The designer refused to cooperate with the probe, and will be subpoenaed.)    Shoes? No good socialist pays $635 to “purchase” bright-red ribbon pumps, to be worn only once.    AOC got that part of the bill knocked down, too, after the event, by changing a “purchase” to a spurious “rental.” (The resale value of used shoes is basically zero.)  And, gross: An AOC staffer texted the dress designer, writing, “just confirming you’re thinking of providing [AOC’s boyfriend] with a tie/cummerbund? There is no restriction on Riley btw.”  The staffer later confirmed to investigators that by “restriction,” she was referring to congressional ethics rules. Translation: Give us more free stuff — especially stuff we don’t have to report.    Even with these heavy discounts, AOC tried to weasel out of paying this vendor, and multiple other hard-working New York City small-business people. “It appears several thousands of dollars’ worth of services may have remained unpaid absent the [Office of Congressional Ethics] initiating this review,” investigators have found (so far)... The only person who got paid the full value of her services was the manicurist — because, as AOC’s staffer told investigators, “the woman there said she … would need to be paid by cash” … immediately. (Smart lady, she probably read Hayek.)"

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's failure to pay for couture 'tax the rich' dress 'may have broken rules' - "Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the firebrand left-wing congresswoman, may have violated congressional rules by accepting the custom "tax the rich" dress she wore at the Met Gala, according to a nonpartisan watchdog.  The House ethics committee said it was extending its investigation into the firebrand left-wing congresswoman after the watchdog found "substantial reason to believe that she accepted impermissible gifts".  Ms Ocasio-Cortez has denied breaking any rules.  The New York Democrat made headlines when she wore a white dress with the words "Tax The Rich" scrawled across it in red to attend the prestigious Met Gala in 2021... Ms Ocasio-Cortez later paid for the rental value of the clothing, and services she and her partner received, but that "did not occur until after" the watchdog informed her it was investigating the matter."

Ocasio-Cortez Has Racked Up Three Major Ethics Complaints During Her First Months In Congress - "Two watchdog groups have filed ethics complaints against Ocasio-Cortez for misusing her resources as a congresswoman with the Office of Congressional Ethics, while another group filed a complaint with Federal Election Commission (FEC) alleging she and her chief of staff set up a million-dollar private slush fund. Ocasio-Cortez’s term officially began in January."

AOC Movie Flops Hard, Grosses Less Than $10K From 120 Screens - "Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) has a new documentary out, “To The End.” And if movie theaters are paying attention to ticket sales, they’ll realize it’s already run to the end.  The flick opened on Dec. 9 at 120 theaters. But since then, it’s made just $9,667, according to BoxOfficeMoJo.  That’s $80.55 per screen.  And let’s say the tickets are $16.25, as they are at Regal Theaters. That would equate to fewer than 600 people who actually saw it... Of course, the critics hailed it; the film drew an 83% approval rating from Rotten Tomatoes. But even there, the movie got some spotty reviews."

AOC sinks millions into campaign capitalism venture - "The products hawked on her campaign website include $58 “Tax the Rich” sweatshirts — currently sold out — $28 Green New Deal hats and $27 tees that say “Drink Water & Don’t Be A Racist.” A “Better World Is Possible” sweatshirt for $58 is sold out in all but one size.  Like true cut-throat capitalists, the campaign appears to have marked up the AOC gear by more than double the wholesale cost. The bulk purchase price for plain black sweatshirts, similar to the one used for the “Tax the Rich” item, is $22.84...   Ocasio-Cortez tweeted back that she was “proud” of her merchandise, adding “Not to mention all proceeds go to community organizing like our Homework Helpers program which gives private tutoring to kids who’ve needed learning support since COVID: Check out our shop!” Campaign filings show that only $10,917 has gone to community groups since January 2021, including $4,217 to the Start Lighthouse organization in the Bronx for the Homework Helpers program; $5,000 to IOBY in Brooklyn, a crowd-funding group; $300 to the Poppenhusen Institute community center; $400 to New Immigrant Community Empowerment; $500 to the City Parks Foundation, and $500 to a group only described as City IslandO. “Our campaign directly runs several charitable programs, including regular food distributions.  We also have seasonal programs like our back-to-school backpack giveaways and turkey distributions around the holidays,” said campaign spokeswoman Lauren Hitt.  Campaign filings show a $5,550 expense for turkeys in November 2021 and a $4,284 purchase of backpacks in August 2021."

Thread by @AndrewKerrNC on Thread Reader App – Thread Reader App - "NEW: The House Ethics Committee has rebuked @AOC for simultaneously claiming her longtime partner, Riley Roberts, is and isn't her "spouse."  This has allowed AOC to grant her "spouse" special perks and freebies while also shielding his financial affairs from the public.  🧵
The Ethics Committee buried its rebuke of AOC deep in the footnotes of its July report finding she violated House Rules in her attendance of the 2021 Met Gala:  "The Committee also found evidence that Representative Ocasio-Cortez listed Mr. Roberts as her “spouse” on paperwork filed with the House relating to privately sponsored travel, although the two were not legally married at the time of the gifted travel."  "The Committee further notes that at the same time Representative Ocasio-Cortez was seeking to take advantage of exceptions to the Gift Rule only applicable to spouses and/or certain relatives, she was not disclosing Mr. Roberts's financial interests as is required of Members who are legally married."
How did we get here?  AOC's attorney, David Mitrani, explained in no uncertain terms in a May 16 letter to the House Ethics Committee that Roberts is considered AOC's "spouse" only in the context of federal campaign finance law, but NOT for financial disclosure requirements. Under this interpretation, AOC has granted her "spouse" several freebies and perks connected to her service as a member of Congress, including:  A free ticket worth $35,000 to attend the 2021 Met Gala  Gifted travel to Japan and South Korea in 2023  and a Congressional "Spouse Pin," which grants Roberts access to parts of the Capitol complex not accessible to the public.
There are drawbacks to being a congressional spouse, though.  That includes public disclosure of their financial affairs.  But Roberts isn't subjected to those drawbacks, AOC's attorney said, because under "financial disclosure guidance, Mr. Roberts is not considered a spouse"  That means it's unclear if or where Roberts is employed, his debts, his assets, or if he buys or trades stocks in companies that fall under AOC's congressional jurisdiction.  This is information that every other congressional spouse publicly discloses. Except for AOC's. Other spousal restrictions could soon be implemented if AOC has her way and passes her bill which would ban congressional spouses from buying or selling stocks.  It's a severe restriction that would apply to every congressional spouse with one exception: AOC's own "spouse"
Federal laws require the spouses of lawmakers to disclose their financial affairs to the public to prevent them from profiting from their partner's position or being used as a pass-through to influence legislation.  Though AOC considers Roberts her "spouse," he's exempt from all those rules. So long as he and AOC remain legally unmarried. Which brings us to the status of AOC's engagement to Roberts.  The pair announced their engagement in 2022.  But there's no evidence they've tied the knot, and AOC hasn't been pictured wearing her engagement ring in public since November 2023. But Roberts and AOC still live together -- they voted out of the same address in the November 2024 elections.  And they still spend time together. Just yesterday, AOC posted an Instagram Story with her and Roberts visiting a NYC restaurant.
Ethics experts are now questioning whether AOC is intentionally delaying her legal marriage to Riley Roberts because one or both of them have something to hide from the public.  "It is fair to question her inconsistent treatment of Roberts as her spouse, and specifically whether this is in an attempt to not disclose financial information," said Kendra Arnold of @factdc"

Singaporeans are avoiding the U.S. more than other Asian travelers - "Southeast Asians are skipping trips to the United States this year — for a variety of reasons.  Singaporeans, however, are rejecting it at greater levels than others, a survey of 6,000 regional travelers showed.    The survey commissioned by CNBC Travel showed 7% of Singaporeans said their interest in visiting the U.S. increased this year, while more than half (55%) said their interest had decreased.    Both numbers veer sharply from the 44% of Southeast Asian respondents who said their interest in the U.S. increased this year, and the 18% who said it fell, according to the survey conducted by the market research company Milieu Insight.  Time and again, the survey showed that Singaporeans’ views of the U.S. differed from those from Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines and Malaysia — often by a wide margin.  Singaporeans were the only respondents in the survey to say that they still get most of their information from local and international news. Respondents from the other five countries, including 80% of those from Thailand, said social media is their primary news source... Since Singapore has low crime rates, its citizens have high safety expectations, said Zilmiyah Kamble, a senior lecturer for hospitality and tourism management at James Cook University...  Singaporeans were the least confident about passing through U.S. immigration controls, the survey showed. Some 60% said they felt the process would be smooth, compared to 78% of those from other parts of Southeast Asia... “The violence there, the crime there, the poverty,” he said. “I’m sure the situation there is not as bad as the media makes it out to be, but ... why take a chance?”"
Looks like Singaporeans don't believe in the power of the Singapore passport

Artist to sue AirAsia over unauthorised use of his iconic Penang mural - "Artist Ernest Zacharevic will be taking legal action against AirAsia over the airline’s unauthorised use of his artwork.  This comes after talks between the Lithuanian artist and the Malaysian budget carrier, which began after he spotted his iconic Children On A Bicycle artwork  on one of AirAsia’s aircraft at the Penang International Airport on Nov 22, 2024, broke down.  The artwork has become one of Mr Zacharevic’s most well-known street murals since he painted it in 2012 in Penang, drawing fans and tourists from all over the world to the Malaysian island."

How easy is it to fudge your scientific rank? Meet Larry, the world’s most cited cat - "Larry Richardson appeared to be an early-career mathematician with potential. According to Google Scholar, he’d authored a dozen papers on topics ranging from complex algebras to the structure of mathematical objects, racking up more than 130 citations in 4 years. It would all be rather remarkable—if the studies weren’t complete gibberish. And Larry wasn’t a cat... Although Larry’s profile might seem obviously fake, finding manipulated ones usually isn’t easy, says Talal Rahwan, a computer scientist at New York University Abu Dhabi. Earlier this year, he and Yasir Zaki, a computer scientist at the same institution, and their colleagues scanned more than 1 million Google Scholar profiles to look for anomalous citation counts. They found at least 114 with “highly irregular citation patterns,” according to a paper posted in February on the arXiv preprint server. “The vast majority had at least some of their dubious citations from ResearchGate,” Zaki says...   It’s not the first time somebody has manipulated Google Scholar by posting fake papers. In 2010, Cyril Labbé, a computer scientist at Grenoble Alpes University, invented a researcher named Ike Antkare (“I can’t care”), and made him the sixth most cited computer scientist on the service by posting fake publications to Labbé institutional website"

Why Harry Potter’s Daniel Radcliffe Wore The Same Outfit Everyday When Struggling With The Paparazzi - "It was three or four months. Because I was doing a play in London and every night there was paparazzi outside. And I suddenly realized after like after I just had just been lazy and not changed my clothes for a few days, that they were not there. And I realized it’s probably because I’m wearing the same thing so it all looks like photos from the same day. So I was like ‘I’ll just continue wearing this.’ And they never came back because it all looks like the same picture in front of the same door."

Parrots, Parachutes, and Pancakes. - "Schallmoser had the nickname 'The Rammer' due to his tendencies to hit enemy planes, and not always intentionally. This day was no exception as he clipped a B-26 propeller with his rudder, forcing him to bail. He had already been hit by a 50. cal round which blew apart his armour plating and shredded his leg... when Schallmoser managed to bail he found himself parachuting into his own mother's back garden! In a story you could not make up, Eduard found himself tangled up in his mum's washing line. After helping him down, his mother tried calling the hospital to get treatment but could not get through. Instead she cleaned and bandaged him up and made him a large meal of pancakes to regain his strength before eventually getting to the hospital and returning to JG-44 the next day."

Chicago to Review Woman's $105,000 Parking Ticket Bill - "The city of Chicago is reviewing the case of a single, unemployed mother saddled with the biggest parking fine in city history after she filed a lawsuit claiming that her ex-boyfriend was to blame for all the tickets.  Jennifer Fitzgerald owes Chicago a whopping $105,000 after a 1999 Chevy Monte Carlo – a used car that was bought for $600 and registered in her name – was parked at O'Hare Airport for three years starting in November 2009. It was parked there by Fitzgerald's ex, Brandon Preveau, according to a civil suit Fitzgerald has filed... Drew said it is the city's understanding that the car was parked in the United Airlines' lot at O'Hare Airport. Preveau works for United Airlines.  "The operator of the vehicle was a badged employee for United Airlines and therefore had authorization to park there while working," Drew said. "It is also our understanding that the employee moved this vehicle a number of times in this United lot and that tickets being affixed to the vehicle were periodically removed. Therefore, a stack of tickets was not accruing on the vehicle." According to the Chicago Department of Aviation, posted signs at the O'Hare lots note that if a vehicle is in a lot for more than 30 days without the lot operators being notified, then the company will attempt to contact the owner, but if the owner cannot be contacted, the vehicle will be towed to another lot before eventually being towed to the city impound lot as an abandoned vehicle."

In a video shared on Instagram, a swarm of spectators are seen rushing towards stacks of yoga mats laid out for distribution after the event, creating a stampede-like situation. They snatched many mats and ran from the location while pushing others. Those who couldn’t get a mat tried to steal the food. Yes! Wine, candy and room service: How Ottawa spent $170,000 on Canadian ISIS women - "Federal officials spent at least $170,000 bringing Canadian ISIS women home from Syria, according to internal government documents that show expenses for ice cream, candy and wine.  The money was for costs incurred when eight women who had traveled to the Middle East to join the Islamic State returned to Canada with their children in 2022 and 2023.  Newly-released documents show Global Affairs Canada paid for business class flights, stays at the Montreal Airport Marriott, room service, chips, chocolate bars and Timbits.  One hotel room cost over $1,000 for two nights because of a $95 wine tab. Another ran to $850, with charges for junk food and $25 servings of red, white and sparkling wines... The expenses are for both the women and children, as well as the government staff sent to receive them when they landed in Montreal before carrying on to their home provinces... The federal government agreed to bring them back to Canada after their families launched a challenge in Federal Court in Ottawa demanding their return. Global News requested the documents on the costs of the repatriations under the Access to Information Act two years ago. The department did not release the materials until Aug. 7, 2025. The records do not appear to include the costs of sending Canadian officials to extract the women from Syria, but seem to cover only the bill for receiving them in Montreal...   A group formed by families of Canadians killed in the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks said it was “deeply troubled” by the “extravagant homecoming” the women apparently received.  “Such spending raises serious questions about government priorities, public trust, and the integrity of our system,” said Sheryl Saperia, CEO of Secure Canada.  The return of foreign fighters who left to join terrorist groups should prioritize public safety, “not reward those who betrayed their country and broke the law,” she said.  By contrast, she said victims’ families have had to pay their own way to attend legal proceedings related to the terror suspects accused of killing their loved ones.  “The stark contrast between how our government treats perpetrators and how it treats their victims should alarm every Canadian and offend every taxpayer.”...       Chouay, a resident of Montreal, pleaded guilty on July 21 to participating in the activities of ISIS and was sentenced to a symbolic single day in prison...   Because not all the women showed up for the second repatriation, a third known as CONOP3 had to be organized, at a cost of $27,800, according to the documents."
