Links - 19th September 2025 (2 - Charlie Kirk Assassination)

Thread by @TheHat2 on Thread Reader App – Thread Reader App - "I talked with a friend of mine who I thought to be just a normal left-winger about the Charlie Kirk assassination. His response was, and I quote, "This is the most hopeful I've felt in fucking weeks." I'm horrified. Another one on Facebook. I haven't spoken to this one in a while.  This was my neighbor many years ago. Even if this isn't celebratory, I think it's wrong to say "I wish death on no human" and then append a "but" to that. Especially if that "but" is basically saying "he had it coming." I thought victim-blaming was wrong?"
I saw someone claiming no one in real life was celebrating Charlie Kirk's death

Douglass Mackey on X - "Take a close look at many of the groups we see over-represented in celebrating Charlie Kirk’s death:
-Teachers
-Healthcare Professionals
-Government Workers
These are NOT radical blue-haired freaks. They are the highly-indoctrinated Democrat rank and file."
Mister Magee on X - "Also highly female jobs"

Why are so many teachers celebrating Charlie Kirk’s murder? - "Many ran to boast about their indifference to Kirk’s gruesome murder – even to celebrate it.  Chillingly, many of the most reprehensible reactions came from America’s educators.  “Even if you believe violence isn’t the answer, it is a solution, especially to the violent conditions and violent rhetoric spewed by empowered people that create them,” submitted the University of Michigan’s Charles HF Davis. Laura Sosh-Lightsy, an assistant dean at Middle Tennessee State University, mused that “‘ol’ Charlie spoke his fate into existence. Hate begets hate. ZERO sympathy.”  A creative writing professor, meanwhile, demonstrated that he was unqualified for his job in more ways than one when he declared on social media that “Kharma is a beautiful b—-.” Multiple academics and university officials have been fired or disciplined for similar comments. It is worth asking why such attitudes are so prevalent in higher education. The answer is likely to be an uncomfortable one... In a conversation with Zeteo’s Mehdi Hasan recorded shortly after Kirk’s killing, Rep Ilhan Omar seemed to mock Kirk, disputing his commitment to “civil debate”. Jen Psaki insisted that it was President Donald Trump’s condemnation of those who called Kirk a Nazi that represented an “escalation”. CBS’s Nate Burleson wondered aloud if it was time for Republicans to “reflect” on their rhetoric. All that’s to say nothing of those who have weaponised Kirk’s support of the Second Amendment in a shallow attempt to post-humously prove him wrong.  Hearts and minds have been so warped by a toxic political environment that they cannot, even in the face of horrifying tragedy, set aside their partisan objectives to properly mourn innocent life. Whether they realise it or not, this subjugation of empathy to petty point-scoring is an expression of apathy toward an evil whose defeat the country ought to commit itself wholly to. And evil interprets apathy as an invitation."

Fort Worth Democrat Councilwoman Under Fire For Post Mocking Charlie Kirk After Assassination - "Fort Worth Democrat Councilwoman Elizabeth Beck is under fire for an Instagram story posted shortly after the assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk... Shortly after the attack, Beck posted a screenshot of a Newsweek headline quoting Kirk as saying gun deaths were “unfortunately” worth it to keep the Second Amendment. She overlaid Kirk’s photo with her own caption: “Unfortunate.” The now-deleted post has triggered outrage across the Metroplex."
Councilwoman Beck Faces Backlash Over Charlie Kirk Post - "      “When you take an oath of office, you have a responsibility to encourage civility, kindness, and decency,” Fort Worth Mayor Mattie Parker said. “Yesterday we saw the worst example of this by one of my fellow Council Members, essentially condoning violence because of someone’s political views. It is very clear that the killing of Charlie Kirk was a political assassination, and there is no justification for evil.”  Councilmember Charles Lauersdorf echoed Parker’s remarks. “But what I find truly reprehensible, though, is when elected officials, whom we hold to higher standards, join in on this kind of rhetoric"... Councilmember Macy Hill also commented. “I think it is reprehensible that anyone would, much less an elected official, post such hateful material in light of such a heartbreaking and senseless tragedy,” Hill told The Dallas Express. “Regardless of where you stand on the political spectrum, there is no place for political violence, and elected officials should not be fanning the flames.”...        Members of Congress also weighed in. “This Councilwoman should be ashamed of her tasteless and inappropriate post. She lacks humanity when it matters most,” Congressman Brandon Gill told The Dallas Express"

Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks, M.D. on X - "I’m disturbed by a post from an Oskaloosa teacher celebrating the assassination of Charlie Kirk and calling him a Nazi. Cheering political violence is always wrong - and should NEVER be done by those who educate our children. I will be contacting the superintendent and  principal first thing in the morning to ensure this is addressed immediately."

Thread by @RafFaithfull on Thread Reader App – Thread Reader App - "The first two people I talked to at college thought it was good that Charlie Kirk was killed.  Neither of these people are super political, but they are left wing in college. This should give you a sense of just how mainstream it is rn to think political violence is good. Within 30 seconds I made them both realize how insane that is, but it’s the fact that both of them, in a row, thought this, that is so troubling.  If I wasn’t there they would’ve carried on believing this. It is so fucked. Both of these people are my friends, and their identity is not bound up in politics at all.  They just think it is the right thing to say. Essentially, the idea right now is that Bolshevism is the height of empathy. It’s impossible to overstate how mainstream this is."

Meme - Brian Lilley @brianlilley: "I just want to point out that only a few days ago this professor of religion at @UofT was calling Postmedia a fascist organization and asking people to help shut us down. Now, she's saying shooting is too good for fascists."
Dr Ruth Marshall is Kicking Against the Pricks: "Shooting is honestly too good for so many of you fascist cunts."
The Greasy Walrus of Monte Cristo on X - "I just want to point out that this learned professor is a former UN Consultant to the Special Advisor for the Prevention of Genocide. Now it all fits together."
The Pleb 🌍 Reporter on X - "University of Toronto Political professor on the death of Charlie Kirk. If you're wondering why the kids are getting so radicalized in our universities now. These are the vile teachers who are brainwashing them"

WARMINGTON: U of T prof saying "shooting" is "too good" for fascists | Toronto Sun - "Free speech is one thing, but when one talks about violence being “too good” for political opponents, there is no way such a person should be in a classroom or on campus – especially when Kirk was murdered at a similar-sized university.  It’s not the first controversy for Marshall. As the Toronto Sun‘s Warren Kinsella wrote in July, Marshall “has written online “there wasn’t rape there was a RAPE HOAX” and statements “querying the rape narrative” from the Oct. 7th massacre of Jews on the Israel, Gaza border is appropriate” and that the rapes and assaults were “unverified accusation(s) that Palestinians were guilty of sexual violence.”  And just five days ago, there was an X post under her name saying “defund the fascist American rag, national post Canadians. They are not a news outlet; they are poisonous propagandists.”...  She’s a controversial figure. While her X post introduction says “Dr Ruth Marshall is Kicking Against the Pricks” and offers a drawing of a First Nations woman in traditional Aboriginal dress connecting with a woman in a keffiyeh with a Palestine flag around her waist under the banner “from Turtle Island to Gaza.” Is this someone you want teaching your kids? Don Cherry was taken off Hockey Night in Canada for far less.  Like they were when anti-Jewish protesters created a little Gaza encampment on campus, many are wondering if U of T is in need of an overhaul and a reminder that free speech does not mean it’s okay to allow for hate."
Damn conservatives suppressing academic freedom! But of course, if you say something the left disagrees with, you must be banned from campus, because you're making other people feel "unsafe"

Dr Ruth Marshall is now "on leave" following her comments in response to the murder of Charlie Kirk; university actively investigating the situation : r/UofT - "Dr David Jacobs said it best: There is no university in North America which would allow faculty members to call for shootings."
Dr Ruth Marshall is now "on leave" following her comments in response to the murder of Charlie Kirk; university actively investigating the situation : r/UofT - "I mean, misgendering someone or saying something vaguely racist 15 years ago is a bit different than talking about wanting millions of people in your own country dead."

Meme - Amy Eileen Hamm: "My old journalism professor."
Alan Bass: "My responsible side says political violence is usually wrong. My humanity sides with most of these commenter, most of whom note his fate is perfectly consistent with the fate he wished on others."
Amy Eileen Hamm: "What a disgusting and disgraceful thing to say."
Alan Bass: "Coming from you, Amy, I'm sorry to say, that's a compliment."

Jonathan Kay on X - "Naturally he’s an expert on journalisming"
How can we save journalism? – Center for Journalism Ethics – UW–Madison - "Canadian journalist Alan Bass argues that journalists who worry about the future of newspapers are asking the wrong question. Rather than ask, ‘How can we save newspapers?’ we should ask, ‘How can we save journalism?’ Bass believes that professionalizing journalism is a step in the right direction."

Canadians celebrating Charlie Kirk's murder may be banned from U.S | Toronto Sun - "One Canadian journalist took to social media to say it was “delicious” to see Kirk shot and killed with a gun. While a University of Toronto professor posted on X that “shooting is too good” for a guy like the 31-year-old conservative influencer.  Another university faculty member from British Columbia wrote: “It is sometimes necessary to kill.”  A Canadian social worker posted on social media: “Thank you, can we keep this up please.”  They all may think they are tough or smarter than most. But there is something else they should know. America’s state department may never let those celebrating — or making insensitive comments about — the evil political assassination of Charlie Kirk into the United States again... American journalist Eric Daugherty posted to X: “Marco Rubio’s State Department will ban any foreigner from entering the country who celebrated the assassination of Charlie Kirk online, Deputy Secretary of State Chris Landau confirms.”  Oops.  There may be a long list of Canadians who end up on this blacklist because there have been some creepy and troubling responses to this heinous shooting in Utah. One thing social media has done in this time of darkness is show how many twisted people there are out there and how conservative thinkers going forward are going to need ‘Charlie Courage’ to stand up to them — understanding how dangerous that could possibly be... Former journalism professor Alan Bass has not yet commented on his posting that said: “Do you remember the Nazis? Unfortunately, it is sometimes necessary to kill evil people to save many lives. ‘Absolutely no place’ is not the right phrase.”  In a second missive he added: “My responsible side says political violence is usually wrong. My humanity sides with most of these commenter (sic), most of whom note his fate is perfectly consistent with the fate he wished on others.”... CHCH producer Don Jonescu in Hamilton posted on social media: “The irony of him dying at the hands of a gun is delicious” and that “there was a novel written a long time ago that said you reap what you sow.”... Claiming she is “bloodthirsty for those who have it coming,” Victoria social worker Devon Cassidy posted a video to social media saying: “I have zero empathy for anybody on the right side at all — by Charlie Kirk, next.”... Pro-Palestine supporter Aliya Hassan is taking some heat for posting: “May all supporters of the terrorist entity meet the same fate.”  And Canadian comedian Jagbir Ghankas said: “It could be they wanted to make this guy a martyr, now he’s a martyr for the right.”  Many are also upset with CBC’s David Cochrane who said Kirk was a “polarizing figure” who goes to these campuses to create “provocation and confrontation.” He also wondered aloud if Kirk’s slaying could be a “triggering moment” that could escalate?"

CBC Headline Today: "Some of Charlie Kirk's most controversial takes" : r/WildRoseCountry - "If anyone dares to talk about George Floyd’s drug use or criminal record, they can expect their office to be crashed the very next day"

The Canadian left uses the same words to describe Poilievre as the US left does Charlie Kirk : r/CanadianConservative - "Fascist, racist, far-right, extremist, dangerous.  The tendency for the left to vilify someone seems to be proportional to how effectively they rally criticism of the left's narratives, politics, and use of power.  And the Canadian left's embrace of terrorism to wield power seems to me no less than that of the American left. The CBC deciding to immediately run a piece rationalizing the assassination of Kirk, rather than examining the rise of left-wing terrorism, speaks clearly to that. Although other examples abound.  This suggests to me we need more people like Kirk or Poilievre, not less."

James O'Keefe on X - "FEMA SECTION CHIEF: Charlie Kirk "Kind of Deserved It" — O'Keefe Media Records Top Official at Federal Agency Laughing About Assassination of Conservative Commentator  An official with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), was caught on hidden camera laughing about the murder of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk, calling him “a lunatic” who “kind of deserves it,” and saying agency staff were “laughing” at the news and showed “not a ton of empathy.” The official admitted to sharing memes about the attack, raising serious concerns about political bias and professionalism within the nation’s emergency response agency.  @fema"

Meme - Andy Ngo @MrAndyNgo: "Christopher Rispoli, the woke owner of Gentle Care Animal Hospital in Edmond, Okla., suggested on social media that people should be inspired to kill more people after Charlie Kirk. "He is only the first!""

JohnRocker on X - "I have seen over 100 teachers celebrate the horror that took place today. They will all show up to government buildings tomorrow morning and spend 7+ hours indoctrinating the younger generations of America. THIS CANNOT CONTINUE"

Andy Ngo on X - "Forest Grove, Ore. — Neil Armstrong Middle School teacher (@FGSchools ) and @CityofCornelius  Councilor John Colgan posted on social media that he was very happy to learn that Charlie Kirk was killed.   He says Kirk had asked for it, reflecting a common sentiment among even mainstream Democrats that those who reject their left-wing politics should expect to be killed."

Bonchie on X - "Oh look, The New York Times was completely wrong when it reported a "source" claiming there weren't actually anti-fascist engravings on the casings. Who could have guessed?"

vittorio on X - "> be the left

> “Nazis should be killed”
> “Charlie Kirk is a Nazi”
*Charlie gets assassinated*
> “oh no! That’s not what we meant!!”
Fuck off"
Not to mention all the left wingers who are still doubling down on endoring murder as a way to deal with their political opponents

Thomas Sowell Quotes on X - "AOC on Charlie Kirk: "Are we going to do something or are we going to argue over rhetoric? ... We have to pass gun safety legislation and stop this... People can finger point all they want.""
Mark Hemingway on X - "The gun allegedly found was a single shot, bolt action rifle. Unless your plan is to repeal the Second Amendment and seize every firearm in existence, there's no gun law that would have prevented this. If the press knew ANYTHING they would call her on this."

Armand Domalewski on X - "i don't think there's a gun control policy on earth that would've prevented the Charlie Kirk shooting. old bolt action hunting rifles are legal pretty much everywhere, and nothing that the shooter did prior to the attack would've showed up as a potential red flag alert
I guess only Japan style gun control, where you're only allowed to purchase shotguns or air rifles, might have worked"
Clearly, all policies have their intended consequences so if you don't think intentions are all that matter, you're a hypocrite and a bad person

Kathleen Stock on X - "Turns out if you spend ten years equating emotional harm with the gravity of physical harm, people will get casual about physical harm. Who knew."
Russell T. Warne 🇺🇸🇨🇱🇮🇱 on X - "If people are taught that speech=violence, they will inevitably respond to speech w/violence."
ReLuxe on X - "What they're taught is
Conservative speech = violence
Liberal violence = speech"

toddstarnes on X - "Democrats have dehumanized Conservatives. It started with Obama calling us bitter Americans who cling to our guns and our religion. It was Hillary Clinton calling us an irredeemable basket of deplorables. It was Joe Biden calling us the dregs of society. It was Maxine Waters telling them to absolutely harass us in restaurants and grocery stores. They called us Nazis and Hitler. They called us homophobes and bigots and racists and xenophobes. I hold all them responsible. They all have blood on their hands today."

Philippe Lemoine on X - "I think people who are openly fantasizing about civil war are being irresponsible, and I also don't think we can infer much from Kirk's murder, not just because we still don't know who is behind it and why, but also because political assassinations are very rare events that are probably dominated by random factors.  But the idea that both the left and the right are equally intolerant and prone to violence against their political opponents is such bullshit. Sure, there are plenty of intolerant people and people who use inflammatory language against their political opponents on the right, but anyone who isn't disconnected from reality knows that it's far more common on the left.  Not only do polls show that people on the left more likely to say that censorship and even violence is sometimes justified against their political opponents, but left-wing activists actually engage in violence against their political opponents far more often, even if fortunately it doesn't usually rise to the level of murder. This has been the case for my entire life, both in the US and France.  For instance, back in 2016, there wasn't a week during which Trump supporters weren't physically assaulted by left-wing protesters. They routinely tried, and sometimes succeeded (as in Chicago), to shut down his rallies by resorting to violence. And not only did left-wing intellectuals rarely condemn that, but they often justified it. I distinctly remember philosophy professors telling me it was good that left-wing activists had shut down Trump's rally and beat up his supporters at the time. Now, you can engage in all the mental gymnastics you want and scream about isolated episodes of right-wing political violence until you're blue in the face, but it won't change the fact that nothing remotely on that scale happens on the other side. That's simply not the case and anyone who pretends otherwise is full of shit.  Again, I'm not drawing any conclusion from the assassination of Kirk here, I could have said the same thing before, and indeed I did say it on many occasions. The right has its own issues and, as anyone who follows me knows, despite being right-wing myself, I have no problem talking about them, but this attempt to bothside political intolerance and violence is bullshit. This pathology exists on both sides, but it's obviously more of a problem on the left and I wish good people on the left would admit it."
Christian Beyzad on X - "Well I think the obvious reason why right wing doesn’t resort to violence at this scale is that the majority of their beliefs, at least in the US, include some sort of order, security and family values. This makes difficult to embrace a nihilistic position of chaos, as the left often does. The much derided “conservative values” are I think what prevents the right to unleash their own violence."
