An interesting theory I'm pondering is that the AWARE takeover shows what might happen if the PAP lost control of Singapore to Opposition Parties in a freak election result.

Both sides demonising the other <-> Both sides demonising the other

Of course, it is doubtful the Opposition Parties will be able to get as organised as the Christian Fundamentalists. Maybe they need a "politician mentor" (if Thio Su Mien is a "feminist mentor", the Great Leader is a "committed democrat" and we can set up the People's Republic of Singapore)
