Europe CNY 2012
Day 12, Part 1 - 30th January - Lyon
Earlier post: Misquoting Popper: Tolerating Intolerance
I left the hostel at 10am. Slacking was shiok, even if there was an opportunity cost. It wasn't so bad, since it being Monday everything was closed but the Fine Arts Museum.
I decided to drop the Gallo-Roman museum since every museum had a Roman collection. I'm sure the Fine Arts museum had one too.
Concrete monstrosity on Montée du Chemin Neuf that could've come from the 60s
Rue Tramassac. I never understand why women put rugs on their shoulders (on the left)
Love is taking off your underwear
A damn short metro line: 5 stops. Berlin has one with 3.
First I went to the Croix-Rousse Hill, a centre of silk manufacture in the days before China took over everything.
JM Jacquard, benefactor of silk workers
"Woman's", the first exposition for women in France
Painted Wall, Espace Guignol (space of the puppets)
It was quite nice but a lot of it was product placement
Detail
Le Mur Des Canuts (Wall of the Lyonnais Silk Workers)
3 ways to learn driving: course, traditional and fast, slow and progressive
Graffiti
Boulevard of the Lyonnais Silk Workers
This area used to be poor, but now it's gentrified
Spring
Spring is like sex. Maye the other seasons are like sex too - just different positions.
Doggy toilet
This was the first time I'd seen such a thing. It's a good idea. However I still saw shit nearby. 1 guy's dog started shitting outside the place and he pushed it here. How civic-minded!
View from Croix-Rousse Hill
Place Bellevue & Croix-Rousse Boulevard
Unlike Paris most of the street signs here weren't history lessons.
Rue d'Austerlitz
If this were Asia, the Austrians would be protesting.
Rue Celu. Note the "paid" signs for parking spaces. Presumably some are free.
Overlooking the Rhône
For dogs to chase each other
Sully Prudhomme
St Laurent Barracks
The building looked quite unremarkable
"Happiness is other people" (reference to "Hell is other people")
Mail trolley. I was tempted to run away with it.
Rue des Fantasques
Rue Grognard
Contemplating her youth. The line on the bottom right: "Fuck, youth..."
School concrete yard
Posters on window of place which helps immigrants. Why does it have metal grilles? Right-wingers attacking?
Recycling helps fight cancer?!
Rue Roger Violi
War Memorial
Back of Opera House
Mirror (?)
Town Hall
Rue Joseph Serlin
It used to be the Rue Lafont. Very considerately they have left the old name for reference.
Fountain (by Bartholdi, of Statue of Liberty fame)
18th (?) century Italian style
Here is a picture of the fountain on 5th February, about a week after I left, showing how cold it was.
Town Hall again. It looks different from the back view because it's a very large building.
Packing light is not a good idea in winter. Apparently it was unseasonably warm in Lyon till I arrived. I "brought winter" with me, so I was told.
