An oldie but goodie from 2002:

Music agency changes name because of pornography link

Phonographic Performance Malaysia has changed its name so people no longer mistake it for a pornography company.

For 13 years since the government agency opened, people have misread its name and misconstrued its purpose, chief executive Tan Ngiap Foo says.

The agency is a music licensing body, which collects royalties for the public use of copyrighted material.

"I have clients who purposely write checks as Photographic Performance Malaysia just to avoid the phonographic word, linking the word with pornography," Mr Tan is quoted as saying in The Star newspaper.

An official at the Consumer Affairs Ministry confirms it has received many complaints about the agency from callers demanding to know why the government is involved in a pornography company, The Star reports.

Mr Tan says he has often been asked how he could head a "dirty" organisation.

The agency's board decided earlier this year to change its name, hoping its identity would no longer be mistaken, Mr Tan said.

The agency is now called Public Performance Malaysia.
