Australia 2011 - Day 3, Part 2 - Koala watching

"The fact that a believer is happier than a skeptic is no more to the point than the fact that a drunken man is happier than a sober one." - George Bernard Shaw

Day 3 - 31st July - Koala watching
(Part 2)

We then stopped at Kennett - in the past, it was spelled Kennet, then there was a typo when they renovated the sign.

I actually preferred this nice dog to the koala. It was cuter, following us up the slope.

Real and fake Kookaburra
What you hear at the start are Vietnamese imitating the bird

Cock sign, including "Koala's" (for "Koalas")
This is the first of my "Bad Australian English" series of signs and notices

Reeds. Being from Singapore, I was deprived enough to ask what species this was.

Road sign we saw: "Historic sight". This was very dodgy, given that the sight was not specified.

"Drive on left in Australia" (from Wikipedia)
Amusing sign we saw. Damn Americans!

For lunch we went to Apollo Bay.

The driver passed around this menu of a place Go West Tours presumably had a deal with. My chief takeaway was that these were the most expensive wedges in the world (A$10)

"Consumption of alcohol prohibited. Penalties apply"
Given that Australia was an ex-British Colony, one wonders why they have American attitudes to alcohol

The place with the endorsement: "Nautigals" ("Naughty gals")

There was an outlet (Iluka) which had very confused Halal certification:

Iluka's Bacon option. Also a King Souvlaki is cheaper than an Open souvlaki. Huh?

Presumably the Islamic Co-ordinating Council of Victoria doesn't mind their certificates being displayed where pork and alcohol are also served.

At first I thought they scaled back their efforts, but second thought vandalism is more likely

"Seafood Sticks" is a better name than "Crabsticks"

The first time I've seen a male toilet queue longer than a female one (there was a PRC tour group). I was tempted to use the female toilet (there was one cubicle each), but we live in a sexist society. One PRC didn't close the door when peeing and buckling his pants.

Lunch: fish & chips and what was supposed to be "chicken souvlaki". I'd forgotten that outside of Greece, "Souvalki" was actually Gyros. This one was rather meh, since there was no tzatziki (or any other sauce - the flavouring came from pepper). Obviously there was no pork option, or I'd have chosen it, so it made me wonder about the kualiti of this place.

"Pull & tear For Arts Degree GS 2011"
I didn't carve that

One grocery store: "Don't ask for credit, as refusal may offend". I saw this somewhere else too.

As we pulled out of Apollo Bay, the driver asked if we had fish and chips. A few said yes, and he asked us to guess what fish we had been given. I guessed shark and people laughed, but it was true. "Flake", the default fish and chips fish in Austalia, is shark. I blame the proximity to Asia, creating a surplus of shark meat.
